Lots of reading, overall very good course and helpful professor (as long as you don't ask stupid questions).

Very good and knowlegable. He's also department head so he doesn't teach much. I do agree that he takes pleasure in exposing some of his students ignorances, but they shouldn't have been in his class in the first place.
Most awesome guy ever. Cracks me up when he calls someone on the fact that they only read the Cliff Notes. Hilarious! As long as you actually do the work and participate, you will be fine. Wish he didn't teach Great Gatsby though, I hate that book.
Fun class. Lots of work, but as long as you keep up and don't slack off you'll be fine. Rare to find a class which actually makes you think these days, but this one does. White is very intelligent and easy to talk with. Would take more classes with him.
I've had Jeff for 3 quarters now and he is one of the best teachers I have ever had in school. He forces students to think and is not afraid to call a person when he sees that they are not preforming to the level they can.If you are interested in going to a 4 year school jeff will prepare you for it.
Amusing, although smug. Seems to have difficulty assessing other people's emotions/reactions correctly. Patronizes stupid people, but so do I, so no real complaint there. Cute, in a snotty-English-prof way. Would definitely take a class with him again, learned a lot in his class.
He is a great instructor. In the beginning I was totally baffled about the assignments and papers he made us write. EXCRUTIATING. However, by the time you get out of the class you attain the ability to analyze and find peculiar themes in any literary work.
Too much Work! A lot of critical thinking. Nice guy. Explains things very well. This class should not be taken during summer quarters, because all of the work is sqeezed together.

took White's 101 class this summer. At first I thought this dude was gonna be boring, but after a couple weeks the class got interesting. The work load was good, not much homework except to read and write four essays. I thougtht I would get a C with my lazy work but he gave me a B+.
Too much work, was like he thought we only had this one class.
He has a funny sense of humor. I made fun of him, and he made fun of me. A lot of writing to do, but reading is ok.
His class is pretty hard, but it will definitely prepare you for a four-year college. There is a lot of work and he's not an easy grader, but it is worth it.
White is caustic, snotty and sometimes rather funny- and if you zone out in class he's the perfect image of a dorky english-prof crush. Usually makes you think in the classes, but that's what I'm in school for so it's all good. Highly recommended teacher, and if you look like you might have a brain he takes pity on your grade.
Heavy work load (we're talking an entire novel a week the entire time!) but totally worth it. This class preapred be for classes here at the UW and made almost all my other classes easy as all he**.
Good teacher, prepared me well for Evergreen. He liked me, I liked him but he gave me a terrible grade because of the da** portfolio (final project), so I have bit of a grudge against him. Highly recommended. Workload would be a lot for some people, but I was fine with it. A novel a week and some papers, and that was about it. Fun class.
Excellent professor. Quite a bit of work, but not overwhelming, and dare I say, fun?! Professor White was always willing to answer any questions. Very passionate about what he does and that makes the class so great. Don't go in expecting to slack. He'll call you on it. Good for him!
This man is a nightmare. He dislikes everyone, is cruel to people who are late because they got in car accidents, makes fun of people's writing, and he runs over squirrels for fun (I'm serious, he gloated about this). It's a great class, but take it from someone else!
Very misleading in terms of grading. Thought I was doing fine during the quarter but recieved a grade lower than anticipated/implied (B: final grade). Class helped improve my writing. Feedback from teacher was sometimes lacking: on one paper I got a one sentance response. Final grade is based on portfolio (UGH!)
He is: a hard grader, honest, passionate about his job, pushy for learning, expecting the best, attendance freak. If you're majoring in ENG then take his class; otherwise, look for someone else who'll be easy. Good teacher overall.
Not a pushover when it comes to grades. You have to EARN a good grade. Students that are used to having A's and B's given to them just for showing up, White will eat you for lunch. If you want to actually learn how to be a better writer, take any of his classes. Personally, I think he's too good for BCC.
Oh man, what an awesome class! But it was not easy at ALL. He actually graded on how well you understood the story, and sometimes you simply didn't understand it. I had some problems with his personality (snooty), so i didn't get as much out of the class as I could have, but looking back, I understand fiction much better than before the class.
Wonderful teacher! Cares very much for the subject matter as well as the well-being and success of his students, as long as they are willing to put forth the effort. Class was fun and not overly hard; he was always available outside of class (office hours/email) to answer questions and discuss your writing. Wants you to do well, highly recommended!
You will learn a lot from him but DO NOT expect to sit around, write a few essays, read a story or two, and be done with it. There will be a lot of work and the grading will be as sharp as a machete.
Everyone should take this class because although it will most likely lower your GPA, everyone will walk out of there with so much more knowledge for the English language. No writing class will ever be the same: essays will be a breeze and easy after this class. Take it but pay attention!
I don't think I have gotten more out of an English class as I did with Mr. White. He is a tough but fair grader. Earning an A in his class felt like the Congressional Medal of Honor! Highly recommended. Why haven't you signed up for him yet?
This class is definatly hard. His clases will test and strech your writing abilities. He also isnt going to sugar coat anything, so be preapred to "suck it up". Dont take comments personally and you'll be okay. Take the class if you want to learn, if you want an easy A go somewhere else.
By far, one of the best professors I've had at BCC. I would recommend him to any enthusiastic student that wants to better their understanding of Expository writing (which for most is an evil word prior to the class). His group discussions make for an awesome understanding of the material. Two thumbs totally up.
This teacher is no play. A book a week. He's pretty funny but get prepared for lots of lectures and weekly papers. Those who are considering taking his class, be ready to stay up past your bed time for his essays. It's way too much work which is really unecessary. He does get you prepared but I advise you to seek another teacher.
This class was very interesting. However, he assigns us way too much unnecessary work. He's an awesome guy, really nice, and really cool. Sensetive people beware. The main problem is his emphasis on certain important things like homework assignments and the like. He expects everyone to stay on top of it. He's cool though.
Mr. White is downright amazing. It is true that it is near impossible to get an A in his class and if you are taking his class prepare to work harder than you ever have before for a class, but its worth it.
Basically if you're a slacker and hate massive amounts of work you will hate his class. If you want to improve your writing and reading capabilities with an excellent professor, this is your class. It IS a lot of work but its not busywork. I have never worked so hard in any other class but it has helped improve my English skills tremendously.
Great instructor! He gives excellent feedback on papers, and keeps the class entertaining and thought provoking. A word of advice: what you put into the class is what you'll get out of it. Don't expect this to be an easy class, but it's well worth the effort!
If you need a good grade, don't even think about taking this class. If you wanna learn, take this class. If you need a good grade and wanna learn, you need to be crazy about this class.
Horrible, horrible, horrible teacher! No, this is not about the challange or, what most have said, about learning a lot and not expecting an easy A. This is about the fact that once he "marks" you for whatever reason (you said something, had one bad paper, etc.) you are DONE! You can have a 100% portfolio and you WILL get a C. DON'T take him!
Favorite english teacher (I've had 4 before). we read a book a week, but I do that normally, so I don't mind. He understands the creative process, so for those of us who have experience in arts can definitely learn and enjoy this class. Most students tho aren't literate and they end up struggling in this class. He'll give such students conventions.
Sweet. He's smart and sexy too! His discussions will push you. Be prepared to think! Ask for help if you need it. He's intimidating, but he's very willing to help.
awesome class!! like the style - discussions, lots of reading, seminar papers, and synthesis. leaves a lot of room for those big papers for the student to choose whatever topic of interest - may be a problem to those who need to be told exactly what to write about. (but that detracts from originality and thought in the first place). loved it!
I took his class many years ago when I was 17. He always seemed to look down his nose at me and seemed a little high and mighty. Still, he's been teaching a long time and is a smart guy, so it may be different now. If you're immature as I was, don't take his class. He is an intellectual guy who doesn't appreciate youthful exuberance.
really smart, very very helpful. Not a class for those who are just interested in what grade they get. He is tough but will teach you a lot.
I had alot of trouble in this class. probably b/c we had to write 10 papers based on an economic novel "deep economy". the overall class what interesting and i learned alot and hes hysterical..always keeping the class going and interesting. he is very willing to help you on whatever he can do. VERY HARD grader. take him if you want to be challenged
Jeff is an amazing teacher. He's very passionate and it shows. He never gives boring lectures, and he's always very entertaining. If you take his class, participate in class discussion from the beginning. Be prepared to work hard, learn a lot, and really earn the grade you get. Best teacher I've had in a long time.
It's really nice to see Jeff so highly regarded on this site. Half the students dropped midway through the quarter and you could tell it began to weigh on him. He really is a sweet guy though the overly-confident should be warned. All the tools you need to succeed in the course are there and you get out of it exactly what you put into it. Now do it
his teaching method is very challenging and students expected to do more than they emagen. he required a lot to his class. I do not recommond to attend his class unless you want to spoinl your grage.
Jeff, is a great teacher, who is always willing to help those who seek it (dont be afraid to ask). In addition he is hillarious, but expect a good amount of work. Not a class if you are looking for an easy A or if you are lazy. overall very usefull class and if I had to I would take it again.
As long as you are willing to put some effort into the class, you'll be fine. He's a great teacher, very willing to help outside of class. The lectures are rarely boring. He occasionally makes fun of students if you?re sleeping or too juvenile. He made the "research paper class" fun. If you enjoy English, take a class with him.
Jeffery was hands-down the best prof I had at BCC. He demands that you work hard - and he expressed at the beginning that he expected to see IMPROVEMENT, regardless of where you started (i.e. even if you already write "well enough" to get an A in most classes, you'll actually have to work for it in his). He's the one BCC prof I truly learned from.
By far the hardest teacher I have ever had. You have to read 8 novels (which are pretty long) and write about 20 short papers on them and 4 long ones. He grades super hard. Don't expect to get an A unless you come into this class already knowing how to write amazingly.
Difficult, gives more essays than any other english teacher I have had before. The offset, I actually learned and am now a much better writer than I was prior to the class. Don't take this class if you slack, take it if you want to be prepared for future classes. Also he is pretty hilarious, entertainment all class....
If you like English and you want to improve your skills in writting this is the teacher to take!! If not forget it. I am an average student who got an A- This class is not impossible, you just have to work everyday. Don't be discouraged at the talented writers in the class. The important thing is to show that you can write better than before.
Professor White is a great instructor. He has a good sense of humor, is very helpful, and interesting to listen to--not boring. The only issue is that he swears frequently. ALl in all, he is a good teacher.
This is a great class depending on the kind of student you are. part of your grade is based on how much you speak in class so if you're shy you won't do so well. He's pretty entertaining if you don't mind his swearing. you might not feel comfortable sharing because sometimes he pokes fun at the students. you have to write alot of papers. A lot.
Very smart and has a sense of humor like a poet would have - a bit fast and fractured. This teacher is very attractive and charming and is excellent one on one. I really believe he loves to teach and the written word.
Oh my, this was an interesting class. So, Jeffery is a pretty fun guy, as long as you do your work. He does poke fun at people, everyone in my class, but it was all (I hope) in good humor and he spared no one from his wit. Lots of books, lots of writing. Tells an amusing anecdote every so often. Not easy, but definitely loves his job. Thumbs up.
Basically, whether or not you like Mr. White depends entirely on your style. If you like a sarcasitic sense of humor and are ok with a few jabs when he answers your questions, you will be fine. If you find that entirely insulting and inappropriate, then look elsewhere. I learned from him, which I think is the most important thing.Speak up in class.
No matter how much effort you put into your work, its certainly not enough for Mr. White. Its clear, however, that he takes his job seriously, but I felt that he could've graded a lot fairly. He is also really sarcastic, so if you feel like you would be uncomfortable like I was, don't take this teacher.
I took this class with the impression that I would do a decent job considering in ENGL101 I got A's on all my papers. Ever since I have had White as my teacher, life has become more difficult for me. I try my hardest in that class, edit my papers and I still get low grades. He doesnt have to be so strict of a grader. Hes a good guy though..
Incredibly condescending. He constantly judges you, which discourages raising your hand. He'll kick you out if you didn't finish the homework. Strong opinions whether that affects the way he grades or not. I recommend you take someone else.
He's not the easiest English teacher out there because he's is more interested in original thought. Yes, grammar is important, but he would rather you write a paper full of amazing ideas with a few mistakes than a perfect essay with no substance. He is sarcastic, but as long as you have a sense of humor, he's hilarious.
his grading is tough but fair and i would say that hard work is not enouph for this class, you need to be talented writer in order to get an A. with that said if you are you will really like this class b/c the work load is very manageable, but do not underestimate the complexity of his 2 page paper assignments, many in my class did and suffered
Mr. White is a very challenging professor and offers a load of work. You need to read a book called Deep Economy and write a lot of papers. Mr. White was extremely helpful in helping me improve my writing. I worked very hard and ended up with an A.
Perhaps one of my favorite English teachers ever. He's hysterical, sarcastic, and treats his student with respect. He's good at inspiring thought and we have very interesting discussions. Great teacher, really pushes you to do better in writing. Loved his class, I plan on taking another class with him. He does play favorites though :/
Professor White's classes necessitate a lot of time and effort for reading, researching, and writing. However, he is clear about his expectations, and he will help you improve your writing if you ask. If you work hard, revise your essays A LOT, and ask for his help, you will get a good grade. (He's also a pretty entertaining lecturer.)
He is definietly not helpful. He doesn't make it clear which readings you need to do for the discussion. If you don't turn your essay in on time he will not critique it. He humilated me infront of the class along with saying how my writing is a "complete mess."
White is a great professor, I took him for English 101 and he actually taught me a lot. I felt like my writing and grammar improved. Though he is an extremely hard grader, taking his course was worth it. Just don't slack and use your resources efficiently.
Very funny, and he's all around a great and interesting person, but I'm not so sure about his teaching skills. I worked hard in this class and stayed up all night on many occasions trying to perfect my papers and I'd still get a nasty grade on it. When I asked him for help and applied his suggestions, it didn't help my grade at all.
My experience with White wasn't the best one. I believe that his teaching skills can only help a selected group of students that can get used to it. His teaching generally only consists of memorization and discussion. His grading/expectations were extremely harsh considering that he rarely tried to teach us something. I do not recommend this class.
Excellent teacher who wants you to think about and anayze your writing. Students need to be engaged in their work, listen to the discussions & make an effort to incorporate the writing techniques suggested. Ask for help if you need it, make an effort to speak up in class. He is funny & engaging.
Jeff was very nice & a lot of fun. I don't understand the comments about being a jerk. He was very appraochable & affable, perhaps its a personality thing. I for one realy enjoyed his class and plan on taking another. The workload was moderate and the only thing I could complain about is mandatory attendance (epidemic at BCC). Recommended teacher.
I've know people who claim he plays favorites, but truthfully he's just being fair and giving everyone the grades they actually deserve. Although he's very challenging, he genuinely TEACHES you. I've learned more from him than any English teacher I've had before. He also adds a lot of humor to his class by the occasional well-timed cuss word.
Awesome professor. He's funny and cares about what he's teaching. The essays you write are all due at the end of the quarter- only rough drafts due on the "due dates". You talk about everyone's work in class, and your writing definitely will improve. Take it!
Great teacher. Uses really gory, graphic analogies but is clear with work expectations. Little textbook use required but still encouraged for clarificcation. Grading system is incredibly complicated, hard to know where you're at, but just ask Mr. White and he can tell you okay/not.
I took Jeffery White this quarter for English 271, and I looked forward to going to his class. Three big essays are due, as well as ten peer-critiques, but it's all turned in at the then end of the quarter, so plenty of time to edit essays. Mr.White is funny, engaging and can be a bit intimidating. I recommend his Eng 271 class.
I took Mr. White for English 271. The guy is hilarious, it's a fun class, only 3 papers and 10 peer critiques that are due at the end of the semester (not too easy, not too hard) and it's a nice class to be in. I would recommend him fully.
Probably my favorite professor of all time. If you're taking him for english 101 then he is quite difficult, but he is also quite helpful and gets you through tough assignments. If you take him for writing fiction, that's more his world, so you can see his enthusiasm and he is extremely helpful in developing the skills of his students.
I took english 201 & english 271 with white. 201 was very challenging but rewarding. Never learned so much from one class. 271 was a really fun class as long as you like reading & writing. I highly reccomend this professor. He's highly sarcastic & will enjoy you & be helpful to you if you're clearly making an effort to do well in his class.
It's a time consuming class and requires you to do a lot of printing. Keep your papers (essays, homework, seminars) for the portfolio project and participate often in class. Mr. White is a very funny teacher and knows what he's talking about, although he won't go easy on his students.
Mr. White is a very funny teacher! he keeps his class very interesting and he teaches very clear. But he's very hard to please and a hard grader. definitely not an easy A class.
Jeffery is an AMAZING teacher, one of the best I've ever had. He is not easy but he is very clear and helpful and after taking his class every other english or lit class has been easy. His classes are usually very seminar based, but he doesn't put pressure on everyone to speak and he makes the seminars interesting. I would definitely reccoment him.
He is a knowledgeable nice guy but he grade way too hard!!!!! And is super confusing! Dont take him.
GREAT teacher. One of the few ENG 101 teachers who will go over grammar rules. I fell behind but went and talked with him and he went out of his way to help me catch up and explain things. He has high standards but wants you to do well and will help you out if you ask him to.
White is HILARIOUS and such a great professor. Definitely lets his class take the reigns and tries to involve everyone in discussion. He's such a fun guy, very laid back. Weekly assignments, but nothing impossibly difficult. He doesn't spoon-feed you the concepts, he tries to make sure you learn it on your own. Loved him!
Mr White is an excellent teacher. He expects you to come every day and read the calander for due dates. He is very funny and engaging. I actually enjoyed going to his class most days. I highly recommend this class.
Much harder than ENG 101 but not impossible. He can be a hard grader but he is also always willing to help. Come to class everyday, follow the guidelines for all the papers and turn them in on time. Definitely an important class to take.
He is funny in class but he is a really hard grader, students who are not native english speakers please DO NOT go to his class!
Jeffery is the best teacher I've ever had hands down. I don't know why he has a low rating. No, he's not easy. But he teaches you how to write really quality essays and has inspired me to major in literature. He's funny. He's entertaining. He's passionate about his teaching. And he wants his students to succeed.
He is the funniest teacher I've ever had and he's pretty cute. The requirements to pass is very easy but your papers just have to be good quality papers. Take him and have fun!
Great teacher. Seriously, the best English teacher I've ever had. He might seem intimidating, but seriously, just talk to him. He's extremely nice, and is willing to help you if you don't understand. The course required a lot of writing, but he was fair with his grading. I.E. follow the standards he requests and respond to the feedback he gives = A
He grades very harshly. I would suggest taking someone else if you aren't a fantastic writer. He is a funny guy though.
Jeffery was a very funny and sarcastic professor, but I dislike reading about the boring economy and writing five papers on it. I felt like I was being very repetitive in all my essays. A very harsh grader! I wouldn't take him again.
Do not take critiques from him/class to heart. Use handouts as a guide for analysis writeups and try to talk to him for feedback to make sure you understand what he wants. He gives you enough room to explore, but wants to see you incorporate the writing techniques learned throughout the class. Go to writing lab if needed.
Pay attention, White shows you the skills you need to do well in college classes: how to approach tough reading material & what makes good essays. Covers grammar. Nonnative speakers-please know if you're having trouble with sentences in ENG 101, you're not going to do well in other classes. BC offers places to get help, ask White for best resources
Only take him if you're really good at writing. He's a tough grader. Doesn't put in grades which annoying. MEET WHIM IN OFFICE. Only time can get help. Doesn't respond to e-mails much. Work in groups a few times. Nice, funny, cool guy. Learned lots in his class. Like visuals on whiteboards, but tough grader.
He's really good at helping you if you go into his office. Even if you're completely lost he won't critize you, but help in guiding you in a direction. Hard grader yes. Good teacher overall but hard to get even a B on an essay. Really nice dude though. You've got work in this class. Be sure to work on assignments and essays everyday or it'll hurt.
This is probably the hardest class that I have taken at Bellevue. However, despite being a super tough grader, Jeffery turned out to be a pretty good instructor. I enjoyed taking his class, but I'm glad that I got it out of the way! Tip for future Eng 201 students: make sure you have strong writing skills before taking this instructor.
very tough grader!! reading economy all the quarter!! every essays are related to economy!! very boring! as a non-native speaker, without the same or better writing skill than native speaker, i got a D even i spend 3 hours almost every day. i really don't know what he taught in the class. no help at all
I love the guy. He's funny, witty, and kind. The CLASS, I don't like. The only way to really do well is if you can successfully write about the economy, because the entire class is basically just essay after essay after essay, ALL related to economic aspects.
Alright, I barely got an A in this class. There's a few things about Mr. White. The extra-credit from attendance and the checkpoints is absolutely CRUCIAL to achieving an A. You might seem like they do not matter, but they matter immensely. Do not skimp on these easy points, they add up... It's a 193200 pts to get an A in his class. That's 96%
Ahah! I took his class because of the 'boring' economic readings and I'm glad I did! 1. You really have to work hard and somewhat care about your papers to succeed in his class. Caring isn't essential, but it makes it moreBearable. 2. His advice helped me locate my many weaknesses in writing I recommend him to people who care about their schooling
I have to admit this was one of the most challenging classes I have ever taken. Mr. White will assign you a lot of papers, and you will have a lot of reading to do, that's for sure. There will come times were you will feel overwhelmed, but it is extremely worth it if you really want to learn how to write properly. I have personally learned A LOT.
Very good class to take! He will make you work for your grade but I did learn quite a bit. He is an overall solid person who definitely wants to see you succeed. Tough grader as well but he gives great feedback.
Best teacher i've ever had. He cares about his students and wants them to learn. He obviously thinks about the best and most clear way to teach and engage with his students. He's also really funny and energetic. True he's a touch grader and maybe not the best to take if you don't like writing, but if you take him you will learn SO much.
Every class starting after week 3 is reading classmates final stories (3-10 pages) or sharing the weekly writing exercises and while it seems like a lot, it's so rewarding. I would take every English class with Jeffrey if I could. He even talked about smoking joints with Stephen King back in college so you know he has to be at least a little cool!
He is a very good professor, honestly makes your money worth! If you want an easy A don't take his class because you wont pass.
Jeffery makes you really think about your writing and analyzes what you did right and wrong. Be prepared for a ton of work and sharing with the class but it will make you a better writer.
All I can say is GREAT TEACHER! I really recommended this class only for people who willing to learn and work hard.
He's a really nice teacher and it's easy to talk to him. The class is super challenging so you gotta be REALLY into writing because this class is just essay after essay after essay after essay. Overall, it's a chill class!
Jeffery is a fantastic English teacher! Every class is conducted in a group discussion where a student's rough draft is critiqued. All the homework is due at the end of the quarter and as long as you like writing, it's not difficult at all. 3 personal essays, 6 formal critiques, and 3 analysis papers, all as short or as long as you'd like.
Very condescending and makes fun of students in front of the class. Very sarcastic lectures and does not help you unless you go to his office. Toughest grader I have ever had considering I have been in advanced English classes all my life. His grading is confusing and does not post the grades until the end of the quarter. Do not take him!
A very unique teacher and person. Was glad I took his course. Not by any means easy, but definitely interesting and unusual, and I came away from it having learned.
He was extremely rigid with his grading and if you didn't write the paper the exact way he wanted you to you failed, his feedback was weak and he is very very condescending. I would not recommend his class to anyone
I took his English 101 class and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although we wrote more papers than other 101 classes, the topic of discussion is very interesting. Course material is thought provoking and he gives great feedback on papers. All papers can be revised up to three times by him and I will definitely take one of his classes again.
This professor is amazing - the lectures are entertaining, feedback on essays is very helpful, and he is very passionate about what he is teaching. The assignments can be time-consuming and tedious at times, but are (I think) worthwhile and do help teach a variety of writing skills. The grading is very tough, though, and many people did drop out.
He is a great good. Throughout the quarter, you submit drafts and turn in a portfolio at the end of the quarter. You write 5 papers and 4 seminar papers. But, you are able to edit your papers throughout the quarters. You need to work in his class but by the end of the quarter, your writing will improve.
When I took 101 it was challenging however as I continued I kept on improving. This didn'5 happen in 201, I got a 28/40 on my first paper. It wasn'5 as bad and what I thought was that I will keep on improving as in 101. Then next paper I got 22/40, worse than before even tho I spend more time. This shows he isn't able to teach. DONT TAKE HIM PLEASE
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING INSTRUCTOR, Very humorous, he will make you laugh for sure! Wouldn't have taken any other professor. Very friendly and easy going. Tip for future students meet the (DEADLINES) -------------------------------------------(GLENN CERIO)---------------------------------------
Tough grader, difficult, and make you do lots of homework like notecards stuff too much. Hard to find an A in this class for me
Great teacher. I really enjoyed the class. Make sure you spend the time editing your papers! Also if you do well, you don't get to any real feedback! However, I found success in his class to be validating.
He is one of the best professors I have had at this college. His lectures are pretty entertaining and he says a lot of funny stuff. The work outside of class is pretty difficult and you need to put a lot of time into it.
Prof White is a pretty upbeat in his lectures and throws in a couple jokes to make mornings go easier. I did struggle though with knowing my progress in the class because grades weren't posted until after the quarter. At conferences he said I was doing well in class and when I got my grades posted that was not reflected.
If you don't like reading, don't take the class. Lots of participation and reading, but I got a lot out of this class and enjoyed it. If you like reading and seminars, this is an awesome English class.
I just want to note that while reading his reviews. His essay grading scale is not to be taken literally. A 20/40 is a C in his class. However, beware. Mr. White also grades seeing 'C' as average rather than the standard 'B' average. Don't take his class if you are not proficient in English. He will fail you, otherwise, he is great.
English is not my strongest subject but this was a mandatory class for my AA. I was so relieved to find Mr. White one of best english teachers I have taken so far. He can be scary sometimes but i promise you that everything he teaches is relevant and helpful in the end. Not to mention when he's not upset with you he's incredibly funny.
This is a tough course with minimal textbook use (but it's a cheap book). Three smaller papers and one large final, you'll have ample time to write so just manage your time well and you'll be fine. Extra credit for missing no classes, miss more than 5 and fail. Tough grader and expectations aren't always clear, but you'll become a better writer.
This was the second class I have taken with Jeffery, and they were certainly a couple of the most enlightening courses I have taken. There are many papers, but they are fairly short and if you try you will get a good grade. The class consists of almost only seminars and group discussion, and thus creates a very casual but enlightening environment.
SO much work to do, barely enough time for my other classes-- He doesn't use Canvas so you don't know your grade until it's too late. Thought it'd be helpful that towards the end of the quarter he has conferences with students over performance: he said I was doing well in class and more revision in final papers, I'd be satisfied. Not even close.
He doesn't grade until after the quarter but if you apply his feedback on all your papers and turn them in for revisions, you will improve. Tough grader but not unreasonable. LOTS of papers though. Sometimes writing 500-750 word paper in 1 or 2 nights. He's pretty upbeat & funny which makes mornings easier. Oh and he takes attendance. Good luck!
Its a research paper class so every assignment revolves around an essay. If you apply yourself and show up to class you should be just fine. White gave a lot of good feedback and I was able to succeed in a class that covers my hardest subject.
For this class, you can revise&hand in each paper 3 times for him to comment on; definitely do this. He's also rly willing to help outside of class: visit him during office hours! This was a good English 101 'foundation' course. The final grade is based on a self-evaluation & portfolio. Make sure to do lots of prewriting.
Take Prof. White if you consider yourself a pretty good writer already. Excellent class and I felt I improved in ways other teachers hadn't been able to reach. Don't take him if you don't want a college-level workload. Wouldn't recommend for running start students unless you consider yourself a proficient writer already. Overall an excellent prof.
Prof. White is the hardest grader. He does not give specific examples as to why he marked off points and expects you to learn how to write an essay on your own. He only has 4 essays and if you don't get a good grade on those you wont pass. There's not really any "wiggle room" to fail. I don't recommend taking this class.
He is an extremely tough grader. You have to really work for an A in this class. He is willing to help you during his office hours and does give good feedback. He really knows what he's doing and really makes you work hard. This was a difficult English class but I liked it because it was a challenge. Go in and ask for help if you're struggling!
This might be the only helpful English class I've ever taken but you have to work very hard for it. Prof. White gives you the whole quarter to revise and edit your essays which means he expects you to write a well written revised essay. He also does seminars about the book in class, make sure to contribute as it will affect your class grade.
Professor White is a great teacher. He knows the art of bringing best out of you provided you are ready to work hard and keen to learn the art of writing! His anecdotes are very thoughtful and always taught something new about the way we think and organize the paper. I have worked hard and evolved as a writer!
Jeff's sense of humor may be dry and he may come across as distant at times, but there's a layer beneath that's worth getting to know. Jeff has a great sense of humor and he cares very much. Best teacher I've had at BC to date. Loves participation in class and doesn't lord power over his students. I 100% recommend you his Writing Fiction classes!
I'm really glad I took his class! It wasn't easy but I learned so much and really grew as a writer. He doesn't give you a grade until the very end of the quarter but he tells you that on the first day and explains why. You can meet with him at any time and he'll tell you how you're doing so don't worry about the grade. Very entertaining guy!
DO NOT take this guy!! He lets you keep writing papers EVERYDAY, usual 101 essays as well as the seminar papers. He also tells you to grade yourself for the class and if he agrees you, you will get the grade you said; but if he dosn't agree with you he will give you the grade that he thinks. So there is NO USE for this "self-grading".
Took his 271 class as I didn't want to do that nightmare of a class with the research papers. The peer reviews were actually a lot of fun to do, and this is coming from someone who's spent their life dreading homework. Although the peer reviews weren't that hard, you question if your fellow classmates are even literate sometimes.
Although Jeff does give quite a few papers to keep you busy, he is a very organized professor. I have learned a lot from him and my writing has significantly improved ever since the beginning of the quarter. He's also a really fun professor to listen and talk to and shares lots of personal stories.
tbh if u are naturally a good writer, hes amazing and youll do great. if u struggle with writing, he may seem like a tough grader. he can be rude at times by calling u out or if you ask extremely stupid questions but honestly a very nice guy. attendance is mandatory. he is strict but also remember to communicate with him he will be more lenient
He's a great person who answers any questions very well. Yet you won't know your grade the whole quarter, so be prepared for that. He's a very tough grader and there's no easily accessible extra points sitting around. I feel like I've learned more than any other english class, but wouldn't recommend it for running start students. not a easy A
If you have any questions, make sure to ask him in class or via email. He's pretty accessible outside of class, but his responses can sometimes be vague so get clarification if you need it! He does not grade thru the quarter, instead you have chances to revise and edit papers throughout the quarter in order to turn in your best possible portfolio.
He's not all that. Closed minded. Does not proofread HIS OWN work! Ambiguous feedback.
Warning, do not take the online class. I've been an A grader in previous class, and even manage to skip a class and got promoted to next. Asking for help does not help. Poor paper grading and terrible at online classes. We had a class meeting 4-5 times in whole quarter. Asked for extra help didn't work either. He was here just to pass his time.
I took his English 201 class two times. Online teaching forces him to make tons of good changes. He is a nice and helpful teacher in general, but I do not recommend any freshman to take his class, especially those who speak English as a second language. Although he provides many extra credits, you cannot get a good grade without hardworking.
Don't take this class if you have a tight schedule. Due date times are all over the place, "to keep you on your toes and checking the calendar". Although he was supportive and kind, he was also incredibly strict with due date policy, and there was a hefty amount of reading. Not recommended for those who do not like to read/write.
Workload is average and not a lot of reading. All assignments and work are to help with papers. Major work are 3 papers and a portfolio, no quizzes but a few discussions based on the book. Available outside of class and gives good feedback along with clear grading criteria. Helps clear up any confusion about assignments. No extra credit but easy A.
If I could give him a 6 for difficulty, I would.
Solid guy. How to pass the class: try not to skip class, check calendar, understand assignment requirements, and most importantly, communicate. While he does hold up his students to a higher standard, he also listens and provides opportunities for students to succeed. If you are average or above in writing, apply yourself and you'll pass easily.
Professor White is a good teach. He wants to help you learn, so he makes students use their brains. He can seem pretentious but it's just his sense of humor. He grades fairly for his rubric. Just pay attention and do what he instructs/asks. Feel free to contact him with any questions about work because he will help you. PAY ATTENTION TO CALENDAR!!!
Engaging, empathetic, overall great professor. Take the course seriously and do your work and you won't find any trouble here. Easy to communicate with and overall patient and understanding.
THIS WAS BY FAR THE WORST TEACHER IVE EVER HAD. does not help at all. He interjects his opinion a lot but when u try to talk about how u feel he embarrasses u in front of the class & flat out tells you that u are wrong. He does no answer emails. gives a lot of irrelevant information. I was a straight A (3.92GPA) student before his class.
I enjoyed writing before I took this class, but after taking it I have a newfound appreciation and knowledge of the skill that goes into it. Jeffery White is an excellent teacher with a clear passion for writing which he instills in his students. Though there are a lot of critiques, it is consistently thoughtful and helpful.
Honestly, the most concise way I can say this is that he made me wish the quarter lasted at least six months longer. I don't know how else to tell you how fun and amazing of a professor he is. His humor is really dry and he's actually super lenient when it comes to marking. 15/10 would take the class again (and again and again...)
Don´t take this professor. Very hard class. Not very approachable. You never have enough time to do work. HARSH GRADER.
Extremely harsh grader. Does not teach himself uses only Pearson. He does not proofread his own work and his feedback is often confusing. He gives burst of massive amounts of homework (3-6 hours) when he could easily space out assignments. Do not take this class if you value your GPA. It does not matter how smart you this class is extremely hard.
Prof White was a VERY tough grader, and gave really vague feedback on papers. We only had 1 extra credit opportunity and it was only worth 5 points. I once came to him after class to ask some questions, and he never straight up answered them; he always dodged them.
Chose this class to be in person. Didn't happen because of pandemic, don't know what he looks like, or sounds like. So many typos in his directions and super unclear, and pretentious email responses. This professor makes college feel like a waste of money. Absolute nightmare. Harshest grader for someone who has so many typos in their directions.
What an inspiring teacher with a great sense of humor! I went to college to focus on psychology and now want to be a writer as well thanks to Professor White's encouragement and awesome classes! Great reading material, Pearson studies, and essay writing. Put in the work and you'll get a good grade. Easy.
Want to be a writer? Start with Professor White!
This teacher was a very harsh grader! He also was not clear with his instructions on the discussion boards or the essays and on the first discussion board, everyone was confused when they received a bad grade. I recommend you to NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! Many people I know said this course was a fun course but this teacher ruined the course for me.
Professor White was a helpful teacher. Overall few assignments, with lots of points attached, but if you do the work and try your hardest you will see improvements. He lets you choose any topic you want, so choose one that you're passionate about. He gives vague feedback, but I think its to encourage the students to think harder about their work.
professor white doesnt teach anything. there are essays due every other week and lots of quizzes. assignments are due at a strange time as well. he is a hard grader as well and does not accept late work
Something not mentioned by other reviews, is the amount of discussion groups we had to do. No matter how hard you tried and how much you posted, it was impossible to get above a B. He gives super vague directions and very unclear grading process.
Tough grader and hard to improve scores due to confusing feedback. Lots of work. Very inconsiderate of people's circumstances and gives zero leniency towards students.
(Apr 2018) Pros? Good writing feedback. Cons? Very demanding. Proud about how seldom he gives students As. Your entire grade is ~3 papers you turn in on the last day. Makes no attempt to hide his bias. Required textbook is an anti-capitalist opinion piece. Mocks students who disagree during class discussions. Brags about smoking weed. Acts smug.
Prof. White was demanding and very harsh on grading. Lots of assignments that you will graded down on despite your efforts. The feedback can be confusing. Also not lenient towards students that are already struggling. There was only one chance for extra credit, so don't expect to repair your grades.
Awful. Toughest grader I've ever had. Would NOT recommend anyone to take this course/professor.
This teacher gave me the hardest time with any class I have ever taken. He is not well with accommodations and does not care if you have them. Emails back in a rude manner and doesn't give good feedback on essays for you to improve. There are 3 essays that you will be working on the whole quarter and submit a big portfolio at the end. -1/10
Simple class. Do the assignments and ask questions early. If you procrastinate, you probably won't do well. Prof White gives simple feedback and replies to emails fairly quickly. If you are the type to need your hand held throughout the course/quarter, this professor is not for you lol. If you work well independently, this professor works great.
I see a lot of poor ratings on Mr. White which I find interesting because he has been my favorite professor at Bellevue College. His grading is very fair for the amount of effort you put in. Mr. White has a witty sense of humor and is the best English teacher I've ever had. He makes you think critically and independently and has fun teaching!
I dropped Professor White's class due to him being unable to work with my disability accommodations from the college. Do not take this class if you have a flexible deadline accommodation, he will not honor it.
Mr. White's class was the last one I took before graduating with my AA degree, and after all my years of school, I believe he's one of my favorite teachers of all time. He treats students' fiction with so much respect and provides amazing insights I never would've thought of. I could write an essay on all the reasons why I loved him as a teacher!
If you aren't prepared to enter Mr. White's class with a prepared mindset, and can't keep up with the workload, Mr. White is not the teacher you should pick. He definitely cares for his students, but he is a fairly harsh grader.
This professor has been the worst that I have had so far in my academic path. The communication skills are horrendous and work has to be turned in before the afternoon which is bad if you have work or a life outside of this class. Email's and grading is very harsh so if you are not prepared to be disrespected do not take this class.
Professor White is the worst professor or teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I have always been a 4.0 student, never receiving anything below an A during high school. I have a B right now and don't expect it to get any higher. The average grades for his essays are around 60-65%, basically around a D or F. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
very tough grader but if you work hard you'll be okay. replies quickly to emails but doesn't give detailed feedback on papers and assignments to help improve. overall a decent teacher if you turn in your assignments on time and work hard on the papers. dro
Has a power trip and does not give second chances even for mistakes. I feel he was good at teaching but there were so many rules that come with this class. He makes his assignments due at like 11am which is very confusing since most professors make it 11pm.
his class was awful and he didn't give feedback to homework.
Amazing professor, I was in his last class before he retired and I wish I could have taken more classes from him. Really understands writing instruction very well and his feedback is always helpful. Very fun to be in class with and has a good energy when teaching. If you are consistently late he will probably snark at you which is a little funny.
The Research paper had to be written on a 'unique topic'. No late work was accepted, and if you missed turning in any of the 5-6 'checkpoint' assignments for each of the 3 papers you were 'ineligible to receive any credit for the paper', and each paper is at least 25% of your grade. You can request one extension, where you still lose 10% per day.
Professor White's ENG201 class is demanding but rewarding if you stay on top of the work. The assignments are tough, but using unstuck study alongside the textbook can really help. Attend class, ask questions, and you'll do well.
BAD, things are due at like 10:30am, no late assignments allowed, final project is the majority of your grade, generally not very nice to students who arent english majors, not flexible at all, requires peer reviews, piles assignments on during finals week. 1/10 I guess i could be worse, but so far my worst professor.
no, just no, maybe you will enjoy his class if you like writing, but things due at 10:30am there are peer reviews, and no late assignments allowed. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF IF YOU ARE A ~B STUDENT
