Good professor. Writes everything down on the board making notetaking easier. Knows his material and relays it to the class well. He is very fair with respect to his exams and the material to be overed. Lot of concern for students and always offers help.
Teaches the material real well. Cares about the students and writes everything down on the board. He's a good professor to take for chm1045.
Joens is very nice and knows what he's talking about. He's very organized, and he tries to help you out. He actually cares that you do well. I recommend him
He is a very good professor and very fair. He knows what he's talking about and keeps you awake in class. Very nice guy.
He was an awesome teacher. He explains everything very well and has a great teaching style. Also he really cares about the best interests of his students.
Teaches Lecture with enthusiasm, tests are fill in the blank (VERY tiny section) and Essay Question (Majority)... Has prior exams in library which are essentially the same form. Does not check HW or Attendance - Nice guy. More Independant Class. No quizes/extra credit. I preferred Graves b/c he is more on top of the student with more grades.

Very fair teacher, curves his exams a lot and tries to help everyone. Very clear in his lectures.

He does not explain, and he does not care if students are doing bad. He goes over the chapters superficially. Also, he goes very fast over the topics.
good professor, but expect to work to pass the class.
This class is SUPER BORING, the lectures are long and tedious. The tests are all extremely hard, its mostly fill in the blank. They is NO extra credit, quizzes, or reports. This is very difficult class. You lose motivation, as the lecture get smaller and smaller. Overall, he is a fair but not helpful professor.
he teaches the class as if u have already taken it....like when he explains things he expects you to already know them and he doesnt go into detail or go over problems at all...i beleive you should go over problems until the students get it, but he doesnt and he continues to go on as if you understood everything. i wouldnt take this class with him
I think he is a good professor, but the problem is that he changed from teaching on the board to teach on power point presentations which makes it more difficult to understand because he goes too fast and doesnt stop to solve the problems step by step. PROFESSOR YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO YOUR OLD METHOD
he's the best
Okay Professor! Your grade is based on four examinations. NO EXTRA CREDIT!
Nice guy, but expect to work for your grade. Has powerpoint lectures and old exams on his web site. Exams are fair but not easy. No extra credit.
Dr. Joens is truly one of the best professors I have ever had. He explains very clearly and makes sure you understand everything he tests on. Tests are ehh, but if you study and do the practice problems, no prob. to get an A. Curves generously and fairly. Definite recommendation!
One of the best professors i ever had!!
He hasn't helped me once this semester! Well i haven't asked him for help...lol I got a tutor and skipped class =)
He is truly a great professor. If you are looking to get an easy A and not learn chemistry well, do not take him. he is very very knowledgeable in his field but a lot of the learning is up to the student. Read ahead and do problems before you get to class. He teaches very well though and is extremely helpful.Has answered all of my obsessive emails.
Dr. Joens is a great professor! Chemistry is very hard and you will have to work for your grade but as long as you do the homework and attend lectures, you will have no problem passing. He is also very helpful outside of the office. I would definately recommend him.
THIS GUY IS REALLY REALLY BORING. SO MANY PPL FEEL ASLEEP IN HIS CLASS. HIS LECTURES ARE LONG. BUT HIS CURVE IS REALLLLY GREAT. A 40 - 60 WAS A C... WHICH IS PRETTY LOW. DID I MENTION THAT HE WAS VERRRRRRRRRRRRY BORING?
good teacher, clear, willing to help. exams are hard, but you should do fine if you study.
Do all homework it will help. He provides many study guides.Lecture is truly long and boring, but at least he tries.
Tries to do his best in teaching the material on the course. His Tests bring no suprizes as he provides previous exams that he has given. Make sure you are familiar on how to do the problems that he explains in class as for sure similar problems are in the exams. Class has 3 exams and 1 final. No extra credit but curves a lot.
his class was okay. i studied my a$$ off & ended up getting a B in the class. if i tried harder on the 3rd exam, i would've nailed the class with an A. but overall, he's okay. (i heard lopez de la vega was much easier!)
The guy is great. He has powerpoints online. As long as you follow with the book you can just teach yourself from the powerpoints and not even go to class. He is kinda boring. Then he gives old exams on his site that really let you prepare for the exam. Final was pretty easy too. Work, and easy A.
Pretty boring, his tests are VERY surprising. He posts practice exams that are way easier than the ones he actually gives you. You need to apply a lot of time out of class to pass
If you do your homework and understand the practice exams it'll be easy to pass because he curves, but expect to WORK to get a B or an A, although I didnt study my a$$ off I did dedicate some fair hours to this class and I still got a C. Also, his practice exams are a LOT easier than the actual exam.
the hardest professor i have ever taken!!!...im a premed major and it made me start my entire college career with the wrong foot!! stay away as far as possible!!!hard as hell!! He is from MIT so enough said!!! go back to the nerds plis!!!
I took him for summer term A and got an A.....he is a good chemistry teacher and curves all the tests....80-100 is usually an a. If you do his practice problems and tests than you should do well. And in the summer term there was no final which is fine with me.
SO, too bad that this class totally and completely stressed out my life since our grades are only based on the tests. Now, i wouldn't mind so much about that but, his form of teaching, how could i put this lightly, SUCKS! All he does is read off the notes that is already given to you without really explaining what the hell the notes even mean!!!
HE IS NOT THAT BAD! Although his lectures are fairly boring he is very helpful and always available to further explain and clarify any questions. He provides sufficient material like homework and old exams and if you dedicate time and study you should do fine in this class. He also curves his exams based on class average.
Learn from the book. His class is not mandatory to go to but helps with learning how to do the problems. His example tests online are extremely easy and when you get to the test you may think you have the wrong test. Study a lot, he knows what he is talking about but was an MIT grad and expects everyone to learn at that level.
I really liked him....he is always available and stays after class so that you canask him questions...Although, chem is hard...
BORING! Class is practically not worth going to since he just reads the powerpoints, which are accessible online. I had multiple tutors, and the textbook, teach me this material because I could just not focus on this man. Hard tests. AMAZING curve. 80-100: A. 50% was a C. If you're good at teaching yourself, this should be an easy A.
I took Joens for 1045 this semester and after the 1st test I dropped it. I attended every lecture and when test time came around, it def. didn't benefit me! He reads straight off powerpoints. If you can teach yourself chem, this teacher is for you! I have to admit his curves are amazing though, 50% is a C.
At first the class seems easy. The lectures seem to always be understandable. Although, he teaches the easy stuff and tests you on the hard stuff. He has a monotone voice which will put you to sleep. A lot of people did bad in my class and if you can avoid him please do. He was the only one that thought this course this semester and I took him, nev
I'm a straight A student, and I got a C in this class. For a subject like chem you need a good teacher, and reading from power points is NOT teaching. His online exams are totally misleading, super easy, but real exams are hard. Who cares if he has a good curve if almost everyone in class gets below a C WITH the curve. Studied 2 weeks for B's & C's
he was an absolutely boring teacher. who shud pick up a new teaching style. reads off the powerpoints but his notes are really useful. would take off tons of points on test. i heard chem 2 was absolutely impossible. class avg was a 32 on the exam for chem 2. many ppl failed. grades solely depends on the exams. but gives a curve sometimes.
exams were horrible. ppl still failed with the curve and ur grade just depends on the exams. DONT TAKE HIM. even if u take it with graves or swami at least u have the potential to pass the class! bc or attendance, mastering gen chem and that TRULY helps. joens' exams were nothing like the ones online. notes were easy but exam was SUPER DIFFICULT.
dont take him. worst chem professor on campus. sucks at teachingg. useless to going to class bc reads off powerpoints. and his exams are those where u have to write everything out unlike other professors who have multiple choice. does give a curve but ppl still fail. U SHUD TAKE CHEM WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
He has a monotoned voice, so yes, you will fall asleep if you aren't distracted. He reads directly off the powerpoint, and since the powerpoints are on his website, you practicaly don't have to go to class. Tests are very similar to his past exams. Look over his notes, previous exams, and look at your high school chem notes & you'll pass.
The best way to get an A in this class is to do all the problems in the book, disregard the HW. He doesn't test you on stuff you have seen before, rather he test your knowledge on the subject, so you have to know everything. Focus on how to do every problem and less on the topics such as definitions. He is not a bad techer take Lopez if you can.
I relly liked this proffesor, he gives an amazing curve and you dont have to waste money on a clicker or mastering chm. Hes's very helpful and teaches well
monotone, lectures straight off powerpoint, stimulates no interest in the course what so ever. I actually wonder if chemistry even excites him, it seems like he is so burnt out that he doesn't even get excited to introduce younger people to the material.
First of all if you want to take CHEMISTRY you better be ready to work hard. He is not a bad proff but you do have to teach yourself. You dont even have to go to class but its better if you do. Study ALOT specially if you have no prior knowledge and his test are easy and he puts the test from last year which are kinda similar.
His tests are not hard and he doesn't try to trick you, if you can do the HW you can pass the test. Exams are not multiple choice but I found that helpful since it made me study harder and I can honestly say I understand the material. He has an amazing curve, 80% is an A! Good Professor
Be prepared to work hard! Do the assigned homeworks and past exam papers and READ THE TEXTBOOK! His class is not mandatory but it is somewhat helpful
professor joens was actually REALLY easy, all of his exams were straight forward. he is kind of boring, but who cares, study on your own and an A is 100% guaranteed.
Grades consists of only tests.
This professor really knows what he's talking about and the class is interesting You need to attend, pay attention to the lectures and keep up with the material or you will most definitely do very badly. Great curve, 70 is and A, but don't let that give you a false sense of security, you really need to work to get a 70 on one of Joens' exams.
ok lectures are a bore...the person who sits next to me & I have a deal worked out where we wake each other up! But if u have questions, he'll answer them for you. Really nice guy. Grade comes from tests, just do the homework to study. You should be okay :-)
I just took Joens summner B. Not only are his lectures boring, all the examples he goes over in class, will NOT be on the exam. His exams are ESSAYS and will kill you. I got an A in chem 1 and now a B- in this class. Grade is only tests. Wouldnt reccommend him!
Exams are NOTHING like the old exams he gave last summer, which he gives you to go by. Also, the exams are NOT like the examples he does in class. GOOD LUCK!
Professor Jones is Awesome!!! He is the best among those that I met in FIU so far. Lectures are straight to the point and organized. He always willing to help and just a great Human Being :) If you want an "A", attend practice sessions that he does before lectures. Do practice exams and.. study :) V
I took him for summer B. I don't understand previous comments, the class is clear and a lot of the test comes from the lecture. The old exams are meant to help you practice and get a feel of what to expect...when I was in class of course there were those playing games on laptops and...w/e..good help outside class and review sessions.
Nice Teacher, seems to know a lot about the subject, test are a bit hard, but if you study hard and go to class, you are able to pass the class. large curve, but to get an A is not easy. I am taking him again for the second part of physical chemsity!!
He's okay. Took him summer b. His past exams are NOTHING like the exams. Essay question exams, ensures that you know how to do the problem. Gives partial credit, curve in the grading scale (80+ is an A). Slow on grading. Lectures are boring. Powerpoints set up in the way you don't have to do to class, but can learn straight from the PP.
Old exams he posts are nothing like the new exams he gives. Try scoring high in all 3 exams because the final is the worst.Got a "C" but it was mainly because chemistry in 6 weeks was too much to handle. A lot of studying is required
He's a good chem professor. Just go to class and take notes. I never opened the text book. Do the examples from the lectures and follow the study guide and it's not difficult at all. Awesome curve, if you put forth effort and kind of have CHM 1045 background you can get an A
He's a great lecturer although he loves throwing challenging curveball question on his exams. Weekly Homework (Highest 5 will count towards your grade[50 pts]).3 exams (100 ea) and a final(200).HW is doable just very time consuming. The textbook is not student friendly. He posts old exams but don't count on them being the same! Good Luck.
Good lecturer. Great at explaining the details but sometimes it's hard to connect to the big picture. Exams are very hard and he's a harsh grader. Old exams are helpful but not enough to pass let alone get a good grade.
Exam Q's are tricky & unlike any he's gone over. You have to anayze each one for like ten minutes to know what he is asking so more than 1/2 the class doesn't finish on time! HW Q's & ppt examples are straight forward but on his exams, left field!! Many ppl know the material but just can't figure out what he's asking. Oh the frustration!!
Reads from his powerpoints, which are always available online. Knowledgeable on the subject however, exams are tricky. Questions on the exam will often need to be solved in a method not explained in the chapter.
This is allegedly the hardest class for undergrad chem majors - Don't take with other "hard" courses. Joens is a great professor who's personality and humor make this class tolerable. He's also a chem advisor so he has a lot of patience dealing with students which I appreciate. His old tests and HW give insight into test Qs, which are open book.
Great teacher, but if you're the type that needs structure don't take his class. He does not give homework or quizzes which you may think is great but you don't realize your falling behind until the test comes around. On the plus side he's the only chemistry teacher who curves so if you know you can make yourself stay on track pick him!
Great professor, reads off of the power points. Gives common exams with the rest of the department. Mind you, you need to know how to manage your own academics. Assigns numerous opportunities to practice material, leaves it up to you to complete or not. Lectures are a bit dull however.
I ended up with a C in this class with minimal understanding of the material, his lectures are BORING. He reads off the powerpoint and not once did he do a problem on the board (it's like going through a math class without the professor explaining problems step by step) There are no grades other than the 3 main tests and the final. Do not take him.
I do not recommend Joens. He is condescending when you ask questions, and isn't very helpful even when you need help. He mostly just likes to hear himself speak. Oh and he doesn't always reply to emails.
Difficult course for me, took it over the summer (6week). He taught well, went over many examples step by step. I suggest going to class and REALLY paying attention.
There is always one trick question per exam. It'll take every bit of you to get an A in this course. I don't recall him clarifying the +-, so I went for the "A" and ended up with "A-". Very VERY tough grader, so check your answers for ANY mistake including simplifying your solution. Finals is very tough, so do well on the reg. exams.
I took Chemistry 2 summer B in 6 weeks and you REALLY have to study. You cannot handle Joens class if you are not one to study. The tutoring on campus helps a lot. For this class I recommend going to class EVERYDAY & studying the material that was just taught immediately after class. Its a tough class especially in 6 weeks but I ended up with a B.
He posted optional homework and practice exams, but non of it counted for credit. There were three exams that determined our entire grade. If you're a DRC student he will take a long time to grade your exams and get them back to you. Posted his powerpoint online before class, but theres some stuff he goes over in class that isn't on the powerpoint
He is passionate about what he does, and he does explain everything right. Just slightly different than the rest. His lectures are long and they get boring but if you pay attention and go to class you will learn what you need to. Chem isnt an easy class but if you pay attention and study you will pass .
Great professor. Gives you all the information you need on the exam on the powerpoint, and his pace is slow enough so even those having trouble can grasp the idea. Showing up to all lectures, solving all homework problems no matter what, and really focusing on solving the sample exams is the key.
Difficult class, your grade is based on exams only & does not drop your lowest exam .Teaches well & organized but his exams are ridiculously difficult compared to the problems he does in class and the sample exams he post. Not only are the questions on the exam more difficult but they are short response and he barely gives partial credit.
I usually get really good grades and I studied so much for this class and I'm going to end up with a C. He gives sample exams but they are different from his actual in class exams. The curve is good because you just need a 50 to get a C but study for days in advance if you want an A. Do well on the first 3 tests because the final is killer.
Prof. Joens is probably the most difficult professor I have ever had, however I didn't mind. He is extremely considerate and is very supportive of any situations you may have regarding his class. But dont be fooled, his tests are insane and all the weight of the grade is based on these exams. If you dont mind working, you will learn alot.
He doesnt really teach well but he gives you so much information to study from that you should do well. Practice exams, practice problems, weekly hw, powerpoints. If you understand everything he gives you and apply it, you will get an A. A passing grade is a c which for him is a 50%, a B is a 70% and A is 85%
Isnt thorough when lecturing and doesnt explain concepts behind the equations. The tests are harder then the practice exams and homework and are not similar at all.
He doesn't give homework so the grade is highly dependent on how you do in the tests. His lectures can be slightly dull so it's difficult to retain information. This can be made up by going over the powerpoints and doing his practice exams. The class isn't incredibly hard but you will be doing most of the learning yourself by studying.
The class is good, he always repeats the questions from class and previous exams on his test, literally by studying those u can pass, but it requires a lot of time studying!
This professor is awful. Expects us to know what he knows already. Doesnt explain things thoroughly at all.
I'm horrible at chemistry but this class made passing easy. He provides 3 practice exams for each test along with the PowerPoints. You don't even need to go to class to do well. I passed every test with a high C or B. All you need to pass is to study the practice exams and the slides. However, the final was difficult & unlike the practice exams.
I took him a few semesters ago. (One of the most boring & hardest professors at FIU, and I do not say that lightly!) The level of difficulty was insane! I took both Organic Chemistry 1&2 and passed with an A and it was much easier in comparison. (I do not recommend this professor! If he is your only option, wait a semester!) His final was hard!
