very intelligent man, who makes history interesting w/out forcing memorization
Wonderful professor
Great lecturer. Major asset to UF.
AWESOME INSTRUCTOR!!!
Great lecturer... made the two hour block fly by! Taught the information like a continuing story of the developing nation, awesome teacher!
Its like story time for 2 hours!
Great lecturer, makes basic concepts more interesting and material engaging.
one of the best teachers i've ever had. i was so excited to go to class! he was amazing at tying everything together. he actually TEACHES!
Excellent professor who introduced me to criminal justice which is what I teach now.
really interesting lectures
He is an awesome teacher. I loved going to class.
Really breaks down historical events into cause and effect that you can understand! I love hearing him lecture! Super smart teacher and highly recommended!
Very clear instruction
He is very enthusiastic about his subject and although he can be repetitive, he makes sure you get the larger picture with main themes. The extra readings were interesting and I found his essay questions to be fair. He doesn't try to sneak anything on the test that you wouldn't have studied.
Awesome professor. An incredible lecturer. Very willing to answer questions and clarify concepts.
Wonderful lecturer! Even in a two-hour block class I was interested the whole time. Knows a lot of interesting tidbits that are fun "random knowledge." Generally a good class if you don't like having to know dates, since it's a thematic class.
Great professor! it was refreshing to have a teacher that is passionate about their subject. he made the two hr lectures very interesting and focuses on the larger picture rather then on specfic dates and details. he actually teaches and is willing to help answer questions and assit students
terrific. tough grader...averages on papers/tests were low, but interesting to listen to
This man is a great lecturer. I beleive the difficulty of the class really lies in the hands of your teaching assistant. American History with Adler is definately worth taking.
Very good teacher, interesting class.
Funny, quirky, brilliant man. Fair grader and excellent lecturer.
i loved professor Adler's class
Funny and kinda quirky. Is very fair and is always willing to explain something and help in any way. I would surely take a class by him again.
While Dr. Adler knows his stuff... He is monotone and banal. He leaves a bit to be desired as a lecturer. If you must take him, do not take a block.

My favorite professor!!! Really an awesome person.
dr. adler is an awesome teacher. he has a great sense of humor and makes sure the whole class is involved in lecture. just make sure to start his paper(s) early. if your class is anything like mine, you'll have to research old periodicals from the 19th century to get your source material. the papers are tough but taught me a new way of writing.
Dr. Adler is very intelligent and really enjoys what he's doing. He throws out some very interesting information during his lectures. I thought he was a tad too repetitive though, but other than that I thought he was very willing to help outside the classroom and an all-around good guy.
Dr. Adler is very enthusiastic about his topics. This course is very thematic- no memorizing dates and names, etc. I believe, though, in order to be successful you should read the readings- getting good grades(higher than a C) on the essay tests and paper rely on satisfactory usage of the facts from the readings. Interesting facts!

I messed up BAD in Adler's class and he had the chance (and the right) to swat me like a fly, but he gave me another chance. I am really grateful to this man, he understands that people make mistakes and he tries to take the robotic monotony out of history.
Amazing teacher, he is really interested in History and throws out really interesting facts that go unmentioned in some classes. Just read and do well in your discussions and you will be fine. I would take any class he teaches, he is one of the best history teachers in UF.
He is an amzing teacher. He loves history and likes teaching. He makes classes more interesting and eassy. We have to read a lot but the readings are helpfull on the test.
Adler is a phenomenal professor. He is brilliant and you can tell right away. His enthusiasm for history is contagious and although his classes are difficult, they are well worth it and he is always willing to help.
Adler is AWESOME. I agree with everything already said... and will add: It's the cutest thing in the world when he gets really into what he's saying and without realizing bumps into the desk behind and then makes a cute "eep" sound. Also... when he tells jokes about dead bodies in texas. Good times. : )
Adler is amazing. His class isn't necessarily the easiest, but it's not horrible either. If you do all your work and study, you'll get at least a B in the class. But he actually makes history VERY interesting, I love his class.
I LOVED this class. It was not the easiest, but by far the most interesting. Be prepared to work hard on the essay tests and throughout the semester. Adler loves history and makes the class so enjoyable
my favorite class taken at UF
Interesting class and he knows his stuff; lots of reading and you need to keep up in order to do really well on tests; fast pace lectures but focused; he's nice/although sometimes annoying when trying to drive a point; takes attendance as part of your grade; encourages participation; tough grader; overall awesome class and I would def recommend it!
Interesting, relatively easy exams.
Had him for both US Urban History and Crime in American history and he was easily the best professor I had while at UF. He is a wonderful lecturer who makes you want to attend class and learn the material. The tests are not hard, but he is obviously looking for you to incorporate the books into your essays, even when they don't necessarily fit.
He's great. Definitely take his class!
Amazing lecturer, attend lectures and you will do great! Essays are a bit demanding but def. doable, attend discussions and turn in minuscule weekly assignments-overall a great class!
You must take his class. Easy to understand and quite funny at times, put in the effort to come to the lectures and you will undoubtably learn loads.
He's extremely interesting!
Very interesting and easy to understand. Really puts the puzzle together succinctly. Not all over the map like many other academians.
Decent class. He's a great lecturer. Grades essays pretty tough, make sure to mention something from the books. Pretty fair, and really knows his stuff. Not an easy A, but an easy B. I'm taking him again.
An interesting lecturer that knows history like the back of his hand. Although his tests are quite difficult, if you do all the weekly assignments, attend lecture/discussion, read the texts, and write a good paper, you will get a B in his class, or possibly an A.
I hated history before I took this class, but he made it so much more interesting. He is a really funny professor and I highly recommend him for a dry subject such as history. There are only a few grades in the class, so you have to do good on everything. But he seems like he truly cares about each student and that they understand the material.
Adler knows his stuff. I wasn't interested in history before I took his class, but he makes it more than bearable. He's a jokester but still manages to stick to the course content (VERY RARE!). Not a jerk, not pompous. TAs are great, too. Take his class. I've never had a better history teacher. =]
I took three classes with Adler and in each i learned to love him even more. The best professor at the history dept. Extremelly interested inthe subject, clear teaching. Read the books and mention them in the test and you'll get an A. Papers are hard but tests are not.
Ok, Adler is a great lecturer- very in depth and interesting. But beware, there's a lot of work. Very strict grader & into details. Must read all the books to incorporate into exams. Part of final is cumulative. And the paper is very time consuming. I suggest you only take if you are truly interested in the material and want to work hard for an A.
Dr. Adler is the best teacher I have had so far at UF. He gives great and interesting lectures, and as long as you mention the readings in your paper, you are assured a fair grade. He is funny, creative, and interesting. He loves to incorporate his students into his lectures, which makes class a lot more enjoyable.
Really nice. Lectures can get a bit boring but he keeps it interesting. Lots of text books that you can get by not reading, but it helps. Mid term and final are essays. Other than that, you have weekly assignments and one paper that make up your grade.
Very interesting lectures, knows his field. Extremely helpful.Loves questions and interaction from students. Essay exams tough but thorough. Grades fair. The class is great, his lectures AND the readings (specifically Popular Justice and Death Penalty texts) are superb. Highly recommended. He does take attendance.
Adler knows his material inside and out. His lectures, if double-blocked, can get long, but he keeps them fun and maintains interests. Grades are fair. If you go to class and skim the readings, you'll be fine
he's an excellent lecturer. i never fell asleep in his classes even though they were double periods. did not take attendance, extremely clear with his points. easy exams, not a lot of reading required to pass.
Even though it's a two hour block, Adler makes it bearable. He's a good lecturer, and the discussion session is the only time attendance is taken (through weekly writing assignments). Not easy but not hard, the midterm and final are something to study for. He's a great guy and an excellent speaker.
Prof Adler is a very knowledgable lecturer. He loves interaction from the class and knows a lot of history. Books he chose could have been better, but the class was great overall.
This class is definitely not an easy A, but it's not an extremely difficult class either. I rarely studied and only skimmed over the majority of the readings and ended up with a B+. Just go to the lectures and take avid notes to study from and you'll do fine. Dr. Adler is a great teacher and an extraordinary lecturer. Funny, too.
Great lecturer! Time can drag on in a double period, but he keeps things interesting. There are weekly papers and several books to read in addition to the textbook, but it's not unmanageable. I definitely recommend him as a professor.
Dr. Adlers class is incredibly intriguing and was my favorite class this semester. Although he assigns quite a few readings, they're all interesting. The exams aren't difficult if you've read the books and understand the big picture. I HIGHLY recommend this class.
Adler is a great lecturer. The class is very easy if you read the textbook and participate in your weekly discussion. There are outside readings but it is easily done. Fair grader and all exams are written.
Pretty simple class. His lectures always run over time by at least twenty minutes. Most TAs get done on time or early though. Fair grader. Grade is based on weekly summaries (just one page, simple), mid-term, final, and a 4-page paper. You have to do atleast some of the readings to get an A, but if you take notes, you can definitely get a B.
Awesome professor. Very helpful if you need clarification. Extremely fair. Some lectures were more interesting than others, but overall not too bad. Do the readings and listen in lectures and you'll be fine on exams.
Awesome professor, extremely fair. There is a lot of reading, but they're interesting. The exams may be a bit difficult, the paper that he assigned was fun. Will def recommend his classes.
One of the best professor's I've ever had. Grade is made up of attendance, midterm, 1 paper and final. Extremely helpful and makes lectures fun. A little bit of reading but actually interesting books. Definitely would recommend this class!
Dr. Adler is probably one of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever met. He is very old school, meaning no power points, no ISIS account, class is just him talking. But I enjoy going, he makes the class interesting and there is a lot of class involvement. A lot of textbooks 'required', most are $5-15 on chegg. still got a B without reading
Adler is old fashioned. He doesn't use PowerPoint, he just lectures. I liked his lectures, I found them interesting. You have to take notes in order to do well. Not very many grades, a midterm (20%) and a final (40%). These are paper based tests, not terrible. There is a paper worth 20%, not too bad. And small weekly assignments (20%).
interesting lectures, although I really don't appreciate the ridiculous amounts of readings he assigns. A whole text book, cover to cover, an 800 page book, and 3 other books! too much when you're trying to do well in other classes as well. Final exam is 40% of your grade, which sucks because it all comes down to that pretty much.
Adler was very knowledgable and has an odd sense of humor. He takes time to read a portion of the essays so everything is graded fairly. I almost never went to lecture and kind of regret it. America Firsthand will become your Bible for this class. Memorize the documents--it's the only way to pass the class.
He is BAE. All class is a lecture but he is interesting to listen to. Let me redo an assignment when I messed up the actual prompt (freshman marketing major in a juniorsenior history major class, first college paper, missed the day it was assigned) also if you didn't know he teaches criminology too!!
Very awesome professor. One of my favorites at UF. You can't get by without going to class if you want to do well on the essay tests. Engages you in lecture, makes you laugh, and is extremely professional
One of my favorite professors at UF! He is an amazing lecturer. I was sick and he allowed me to turn an assignment in late, without a doctor's note. There was a lot of readings, however I got by with a B without reading half of the assignments. The exams are essay-based, but he grades fairly. There was one research paper that was very interesting.
Super old fashioned, wise, awesome guy. His class was entirely lecture, no powerpoint or elearning at all, but easy to pass if you simply you attend class and pay attention. One short weekly writing assignment, one paper, and then essay exams. Lectures were very interesting and easy to pay attention to because Adler was so interesting and smart.
I took crime and punishment. Adler's funny and one of the smartest professors in the history department. Just go to class, and pay attention (which you won't have a hard time doing), and you'll do just fine on the essay-exams. I did about 1/3 of the readings & received a B. I regret not doing all of them bc his class really teaches you about the US
the classes were super interesting, and he really cares about the subject. he's super nice and is funny throughout the lecture so the 90 minute block isn't bad.
Professor Adler is my favorite professor at UF. His lectures are amazing and he is super passionate about everything he teaches. I've taken two of his classes and I am planning on taking more in the future.
I took every adler class I could and he is amazing. My favorite history professor and a mentor! He is a very fair grader, but get ready to write papers. Hes not a event and date kind of history professor. Reading is important but not as important as going to lectures and taking notes. Listening and taking notes during class is KEY to a good grade.
Dr. Adler is genuinely an amazing lecturer and professor. He lectures offhand with no slides just a document of pictures and graphics to provide evidence for his points. He may have some strict rubrics for his papers, but he has a lot of leeway as he allows us to send rough drafts and ask him any questions. Overall, an amazing experience
Overall, he is really knowledgeable about the topics he lectures however, most of the information goes off-topic. You will have to read his assigned readings or you won't be able to efficiently do his weekly assignments or essays. I recommend reading before class or else you'll be lost. If you can find another course, I would do so.
Professor Adler is very sweet, and made lectures easy to listen to and not boring. Readings are essential to getting a good grade. I feel as though if you put effort and attend lectures, you'll get a A. I only got a B because I didn't put in the effort to read too much. Graded only by weekly assignments, papers, and attendance. Nothing proctored.
I would take any class you can with professor Adler. He is a great lecturer and connects history with daily things. I learned to appreciate history and had a great experience overall. The class is based on four things (each worth 25%): participation, midterm, research paper, and final. The lectures are interesting and helpful to the overall course.
I do not understand how this professor had such a high rating. I took him because of that and ended up ruining my GPA. If you care about your grades, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He grades extremely harshly and sets word count extremely low while the bar is high. If I saw him on the street, I would probably run the other way.
He is incredibly nitpicky. He is a very tough grader because no one in the class got an A in ANY of the papers due and I know for a fact some people did deserve an A. He swore that he will not be giving any more free As because everyone keeps saying its an easy A class. He was never satisfied and honestly did not even know what he wanted from us.
Strict with attendance, not much leeway with a missed class. However, this class is easy to pass but that elusive A is impossible to get. Since the class is easy to pass, I would recommend taking in senior year when you already apply to law school and no longer need to worry about not having an A grade. (4/4)
Seriously do not take this class if you want an A. It is really easy to pass, I think the lowest grade he gave anyone was a B- but it's impossible to get an A. Great lectures but he doesn't teach what he wants to see in the papers. He also will never change his mind if you try to argue your grade in office hours. Super interesting content though.
Exams + research paper avg. scores between B- to B+. Research paper was a slog, requiring in-depth analysis of historical newspaper databases. Offers correction for research paper, yet many students who asked him for corrections ended up with B's on the paper. Offers to debate your grade, but will never raise them. UNCLEAR grading criteria 3/4.
Since books are not mentioned in class, reading are a waste of time. Class is solely lectures, where he just talks and provides an image here and there. Note taking is a must to do well on exams, no pp./recording given. Grading very strict this semester, not a single student getting higher than an A- on a main assignment until the final exam. 2/4.
What a waste of time class, the five books he assigned are NEVER discussed or used in class. The books are only used for exams and not all books are used for eache xam question. Since each exam is a selection of answer prompts, there is a strong chance you may never end up using a book for the exam. Which is very frustrating 1/4.
The prof is kinda nice. Other than that, his feedback for essays is lackluster, the prompts are very vague, and many readings are used for one or two assignments. I had a very stressful time in this class and with the professor. He preaches how he allows students to haggle for a better grade but he never budges. I do not recommend this class.
25% Midterm paper, 25% Final paper, 25% Research paper, 25% Participation. Unclear requirements for papers (no rubric, only graded subjectively). Many books were assigned to read but NONE were discussed in class (they are still helpful for the papers). Unwilling to budge on grades. Very vague criteria for participation. Broke my 10+ year 4.0 GPA.
The class is impossible to get an A+ in. He grades the papers so that no one can earn an A. The lectures are useful however and he does hold office hours to help. It's super easy to earn A- and B however.
The material was interesting and I learned a lot from the lectures. However, his grading criteria is incredibly unclear, and you are graded primarily based on just a handful of papers which he will grade very harshly. No rubric, just gives whatever grade he decides you deserve, I guess. Requires attendance and only allows you to miss one class
Assignments are graded harshly with unclear criteria. Readings are not discussed in class, making them feel like a waste of time. But Unstuck study helped me prepare for the exams. Overall, a challenging class, but manageable with the right study strategies.
Adler I do not think, and I do not mean to be rude, has any desire to keep teaching at this point. Any reviews he had in the past glaze him, but he has very unclear grading criteria as of 2025. He does not seem to read any assignments submitted, as many students often get the same grade for each assignment. Not good at all and will tank your GPA.
