penomenal class; tons of work, but learned a lot
He's a really cool teacher; he makes class go by very fast and he's very organized. He gives lots of reading, but it's interesting and not hard at all.
Very good teacher! Not an easy class, tons of reading but the books are awesome. Test were based on the lectures so be there!!! Don't really need to read the book because the lectures anwers the test ????s.
best class i've had; the teacher really knows his stuff and makes you think about the world.
I think... European Colonialism, upper division. Great readings, grades hard on papers but one of the best Prof. I ever had
Nice person but can be arrogant at times. Must do the readings in order to do well on the midterm, final, and 3 mini essays (both short essay tests) Gives possible test questions. It's a good idea to form a study group early in the semester, you'll see
Very interesting lectures for student who are interested in history. If you do the work you will be happy with your grade.
Best teacher ever! He lectures in detail... gives great notes. He gives a study guide before midterms and finals... all the questions are the same. He gives only 3 assignments, no pop quizzes. He's very kind, and helpful! He has a great style in clothing! I recommend him to all!!!! Easy A!
The best class&the best teahcer I've ever had at CSUN in 3 years. He's nice, helpful, gives complete lecture notes,is available when you need him. If you study you'll do fine&enjoy the class...West Civ is required take it with him its been my fave class and has made me think of minoring in history.
Great professor. I recommend anyone in the history major to take him whenever possible.
He is the best lecturer I have had at CSUN. Knows what he's talking about. There is a lot of reading but he is an excellent teacher. Today was our last day of lecture and the entire class gave him a STANDING OVATION. I don't know about any of you, but that is a first for me. Trust me, TAKE HIM
He is a great, organized, well-spoken,thought-provoking professor. The work is hard, but not pointless. Just do the readings and put on your thinking cap and all will be well.

just ignore what the idiot down there wrote that he "looks like a Jew..." what is that supposed to mean he's an excellent teacher. Period. What is this Germany in the 1940's that comment is offensive, and whoever you are you're a jerk for writing that, he's probably the best teacher at this school.
this guy knows his stuff, each class is intense and don't drink coffee prior, missing five minutes is alot of lost notes. Real cool and willing to help you with your questions, find the spakenotes for the reading and your pass with an B.
I loved this teacher. he was always upbeat and nice. i missed 3 classes in a row and he welcomed me to come to his office hours and help me out. i really liked this class. not the easiest, but not hard if u know how to study for exams. i love him! hes a cutie
LOVE HIM! Perhaps the best teacher at CSUN. Lots of notes (get ready to write), lots of reading (3 books, and chapter readings), and lots of fun! Corny, I know :) Midterm (essay), final (essays), and 3 worksheets on books read. Doesn't take attendance. Enjoys teaching, VERY knowledgable!
All I have to say is be prepared to work. He'll work you like his class is the most important of all classes. His lectures are interesting... makre sure you study because is you don't, you're screwed. Make sure you know all the material for the test!
This is the real ROSS from FRIENDS. He love what he teaches he gets really into HISTORTY. Take good notes, and got to the study sessions he'll have the TA go over the test word by word! be prepared to work but you really do learn a lot! he makes history fun again!
He is convinced he is the smartes person in the room. Dont take his class if you want an A. I didn't mind the work, I don't like being looked down on. Yeah, I go to a state school, you went Ivy league. Who cares? If you dont like the students go teach somewhere else. The Red Sox suck.
Excellent professor of history for majors and non-majors alike. Well spoken, organized, and impeccable course outlines. Very concise in what he wants from the student. Gives clear understanding/background for topics to be discussed. Asks thought provoking questions. Provides good examples. A blueprint professor on teaching his undergrads.
I took him the first time last semester &loved it, part of the reason I switched my major back to history. He's an excellent teacher, person, and role model like the teacher in Tuesdays w/Morrie. I've taken him twice and I'll take him many times more. A must take...
I seriously hate history and I'm not good at it....I barely went to class and seriousy did not read any of the books we were supposed to read and just BSed the answers to the questions for the worksheets for the books by looking them up online....and his tests I just went to the study session and got all the answers and ended up with a B in the cla
No textbook reading in Western Civ II. Instead read several novels. I never studied for the exams or finished any of the books, just listened to his boring lectures and got a B. Students appeared to be intimidated by him and rarely spoke up in discussions and so the class seemed to drag on forever. By the way, this teacher is NOT hot!

He's the real life Ross from "FRIENDS" If you go to class take good notes and study you'll past with a B.
he was good and pretty fair.
Very interesting lectures, the guy knows his stuff.

Just an excellent teacher who truly cares about the topic that he is teaching. If you are ready for a course that just requires reading of several novels and plenty of lectures, this is the professor to take. I miss having him!!
Good, passionate teacher. Inspiring for future history professors like myself. You have to read because he will hit you with valuable pop quizzes. Interesting material. 2 tests, tons of memorization, but lots of learning.
I DECIDED TO TAKE A 151 LEVEL CLASS WHILE I HAD TWO 300 LEVEL CLASSES THINKING THE LOWER DIVIOSN CLASS WOULD BE EASIER SO I COULD CONCENTRATE MORE ON THE UPPER DIVISION CLASSES BUT I WAS WRONG. THIS 151 CLASS WAS HARDER THAN MY 3OO LEVEL CLASSES AND I FELT TIME WAS WASTED ON READING NOVELS FOR THIS CLASS. AVOID THIS CLASS.
Truly Fantastic Professor! He knew me by name and welcomed me to office hours when i had to miss class. THIS is what college is supposed to be like. Its not easy laid back learning... I did well just by studying and trying. Not that hard!
He is a great lecturer. At first, I wasn't too interested in the course, it was just a requirement, but the way he taught it was phenomenal. He's very straightfoward, no surprises. Work is required, but it is not too difficult. He is very friendly, and genuinely interested in helping students. Definitely take his class instead of with someone else!
He knows his material so good! It you don't like history then don't take it, could be boring at times! A LOT OF READING!!!! way too much!!! so if you dont like to read then dont take it! over all pretty good teacher!!!
knows material very well, if you do the reading and participate in class every once in a while you will be fine. he is understanding when life gets in the way (except for test days... be there no exceptions)overall i really enjoyed his class
Professor Auerbach is extremely smart, clear, helpful, and a great lecturer. This might sound tacky, but I actually looked forward to going to his class... it was that interesting. A lot of work is required, but it's worth it because you actually learn. Mark my words: he's the best professor at CSUN I've had so far.
auerbach is very smart... and he wants to make sure everybody knows how smart he is. maybe he comes off as a little arrogant?? all that aside, he is a good teacher and a cool guy. he does not look like ross from friends. sorry. morons should beware of auerbach. he will make you work hard, but you will learn a lot.
Good professor, great lectures and presentations.
interesting lectures, makes it not suck 2 show up 2 class. have 2 read the books to pass the class, but they're chill. take good notes throughout the semester or the final will kill you
Great Teacher. You have to read the books but they are not bad books at all. Attend lectures, his tests are pretty easy as long as you go to class. It's a college class, so expect college work.
Auerbach is the rock star of the CSUN history department. He will definitely SCHOOL you in ways you never thought about. As a long time CSUN student, I can say Auerbach is one of the best teachers at the university. You will not agree with everything he says, I didn't. But he has great lectures, very well organized, great in-class discussions!
Great teacher, class is easy. No textbook, just 4 novels. U have to read them & then do a worksheet, and the four worksheets are worth 60% of ur grade. Just write a lot and worksheets are easy A's! 10% participation w/ your iclicker. And 30% is for the final, which is the only test u have. As long as you do the worksheets, final grade wont matter!!
Easy class. 4 reading assignments worth 15% each, attendence is 10%, final is 30%. if you cant atleast get a B in this class, I feel sorry for you. Just read the books/look at sparknotes online, then wikipedia/google the final study guide. easy.
must do well on the worksheets for this class. there are four total and each are worth 15% which is 60% of your grade. Do well on those and attend everyday (10%) you are already passing. Final (30%) is just essays and writing... Make sure you do not slack off on the worksheets those are mostly your grade. I wish I didnt slack off and missed one.
This was an extremely interesting class. Auerbach makes western civ fun and enjoyable. There was no textbook but 4 novels were required which were all a great read. A lot of work required but if you stay on top of everything youll do great. Make sure you take notes for the final!
Auerbach is a wonderful teacher! He really loves his job and it shows. His class is not easy, and involves a lot of reading, but he is such a great professor that it's worth the work. Go to class, take good notes, read the books, do the worksheets, and you will be fine. He has big classes, so visit his office hours so he remembers you come grading
Awful. You'll be studying british history through the lens of fictional films made often decades later. However you're using them as a main source for investigating the time period... Because you know, Hollywood generally nails it with regard to historical accuracy. Discussion is focused on intangible crap and professor/student opinion.
OMG Prof is arrogant and if you are or appear to be smarter than him..be careful! Went to him for help & was put down for not thinking "deep" enough...puhleze. They were MOVIES we were watching, not historical facts. As other rater sez, using old movies to portray historical symbolism..I don't think so!Wonder if he ever enjoys a movie @ the theatre.
I loved this class. It was a refreshing change from the usual upper division history courses. He was able to marry something fun (watching films) with practicing historical analysis. However, it is an upper division course, and your grade IS based on writing analytical papers. If you do not want to write proper historical papers, don't take it!
Just looking at this weirdo gives me the creeps-try plucking your eyebrows once every decade-if you want to listen to a condescending jerk sign up for his class- Went to Yale & he's teaching at CSUN?-Enough said-student favoritism & biased political views-please?-an all around jerk-Was academic adviser thank god he got moved out of that position
I believe that professor Auerbach has been my favorite teacher in my time at CSUN. I do admit this class has a lot of reading and writing to do but if you commit to it you will get a good grade. The class is guided by his PowerPoint presentations so you wont get lost.He gives a clear lecture and gives a good amount of notes so that you can study.
I really loved this class. He was extremely clear and his lectures were very interesting. He always discusses the readings with the class and his tests are very fair.
I loved his class. I took Western Civ. Although this class required a lot of reading, he'd go over everything in detail during lecture. He's approachable and always available in his office. This class is not easy if you don?t apply yourself, but the lectures are interesting and are presented in a manner that allows you to remember the information.
Auerbach's class is moderately interesting and pretty easy. He does have a pretty high opinion of himself (uses a textbook he wrote, still in manuscript form.) He's WAY left, and a lot his commentary is b.s., so be aware if things like that bother you. It seems like he's always trying to prove a point, not teach the facts.
If history is not your strong suit, this class will be challenging. In any case, if you read the textbook and keep up with the lectures you succeed. Professor Auerbach's lectures are quite clear and he is very easily accessible. Final grades depend on a midterm, a final and two (obviously crucial, yet very easy) writing assignments.
This guy is awesome and very professional. You have to read 4 books and do 4 worksheets for each book. They're pretty easy to snag at least a B on. A's require lots of detail. Attending class will make the final much easier. Take him.
Really nice person who's super interested in his subject. Very engaging and caring in his teachings. Only downside to this professor is his choice in teaching assistants. Not a good thing when they're the ones who grade your papers!!! But if you feel the assistant graded you poorly, he offers to take a second look and most of the time gives you a much better grade. Take this professor.
Nice professor but class can get somewhat repetitive with his lectures. Does have interesting movies/clips to watch towards the end. You have to read 4 books and do worksheets on them not so bad. Attendance is not mandatory but it's the kind of class you miss a day and you miss a lot of info. Recommended him just be prepared to do a little work
An easy class if you attend all sessions. The Teacher is not very helpful. Avoid!
Awesome professor! My favorite this semester. Very passionate about his subject. Gives very detailed notes, realistic expectations. Answers questions thoroughly. Uses his books a lot, but I got away without opening them once. Two worksheets on novels (~700 pages total) midterm and final. Highly recommend!
He is awesome. I go to his office hours all the time just to talk lol. hes a great guy, and good professor. He went to Yale so hes not stupid lol. Just do your work and pay attention he has 2 assignments a semester theyre easy if you put your heart into it and your thoughts he cares about your thoughts. Hes awesome and kinda cute. Kinda..
i definitely recommend.
Great guy, reasonable. Very interesting class. Take him !
Auerbach is very helpful and wants his students to do well! Make sure when taking this class you are focused and ready to read a lot! All it takes is reading and a little dedication and you'll do very well in this class. He gives lots of opportunities to improve your grade. He allows a cheat sheet for final and is reasonable, and understanding.
Go to class everyday. Do all the assignments(easy). Read! put in 100% effort. No reason to not get an A. Its not Rocket science but it is time consuming. number 1 tip Don't slack off!
I came into this class expecting to learn more about European Colonialism and left still having learned nothing of substantial consequence related to the topic. He did not teach the class as a history class but rather as an english class. He is not a mean teacher but is just not teaching the right subject. Good Luck.
Most of the ratings that are negative on this page probably come from the people who messed up in his class by not showing up, not doing the reading, etc. Prof. Auerbach is FANTASTIC! I used to go to his office hours to both ask questions and get to know him better. Sweet guy. Not a lot of work, show up, read, and you should be fine.
If you pay attention and are respectful, he'll treat you the same. We used clickers almost every class so attendance is mandatory. 5 paragraphs, 1 essay, a couple of quizzes, 2 sets of chapter questions, a mid-term, and a final. He scales the tests but if he didn't everyone would fail. Take notes, read the book, and ask questions - you'll do fine!
He is the BEST professor I have ever had. I doubt I will get an A in the class but the amount of time he has taken to work with me outside of the classroom with not only his assignment but other assignments from my other history classes... he's there for the students. He grades tough but gives you the opportunity to rewrite and improve. He's great.
You have to read four books but they were autobiographies and novels and you take moodle quizes based on the books. You need to go to class because everyday we answer a 1-3 questions with our clicker, this gives you clicker points and attendance points. This class is interesting and it is not too difficult to pass if you attend class and focus.
Professor Auerbach is one of the best professors i've ever had. His lectures are amazing. I took a three hour class with him and never got bored. He knows how to stay interesting. There was def a lot of reading, and although it is not easy to get an A, its definitely not impossible if you work hard. Fair grader and always there to talk if u need.
He taught the class from his notes and material that he has collected over the years. He is an amazing lecturer, interesting, thought provoking, and makes a normally dull subject enjoyable.
Professor Auerbach was a great professor. At one point in the class, my grade was squelching due to the ample supply of failed quizzes. But, Professor Auerbach was there for me! I mean, is he a difficult professor? Right! But he guides you to success. Personally, would I retake this class? Of course I would because you learn a lot about the West.
Professor Auerbach is very helpful and understanding. Stop by his office hours if you ever need help and he will do the best of his ability to try to help you. His lectures are interesting and he tries to involve the whole class by asking questions and relating it to modern life. If you like history you'll love his class. Overall, GREAT TEACHER!
He gives a lot of material to cover so you have to stay on your toes when it comes down to studying. DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE TEST TO STUDY. We used clickers in class for attendance and extra point for little questions he gives out to make sure you're awake. Don't use your electronics or fall asleep, he'll put you on the spot.
I have had him for two different classes and in both he was extremely helpful and clear. He gives great lectures and if you need help and are struggling, you can go to him and he will do everything he can to help you become better, not only in his class but throughout the rest of your college career. He is extremely kind and brilliant.
One of the most delightful classes I've ever taken. I actually looked forward to his 3-hour class every week. A lot of reading, but he gives excellent lectures and ties everything together very well. Be sure to understand the arguments in the reading and take notes every week, and the essays will be easier to write.
This class was worth not having a social life. This class requires you to do all the readings this is an upper division senior requirement for history majors. Very clear lecture notes that help you right your final paper assignment. I strongly suggest for those who don't take college seriously not to take this. I learned a lot with this class.
Auerbach, he's my boy. I would have gotten an A in his class if I hadn't missed an assignment. Make sure to do every assignment he gives you, attend the lectures, and make sure to do your reading. Lectures are incredibly interesting and always had me engaged. He is very helpful, respected, is and can be lenient with grading. Would take class again!
What can I saw about Dr. Auerbach? He is probably one of the best Professors in the History Depart. If you are a history major and you have not taken him then what are you doing with your life? He gives great feedback & he will help you improve your writing skills. Take him, you will be a much better student and gain a lot of knowledge.
He's a really great and nice teacher. However, his class was pretty hard for me. Try your best on all the assignments because it's easy to get 100% on them. Study for the book quizzes cause there's usually only 10 questions so it's easy to fail it but the questions itself are pretty easy to answer (multiple choice) so study for them!
Great professor, Don't slack off on reading, Be aware of pop quizzes. He curves on test and really read or you wont pass
Real solid dude. He's very knowledgeable and you can tell he's passionate about history. Kinda funny as well. No laptops allowed. Pay attention to the lectures and read the material and you will pass the Midterm and final (final is accumulative) 2 books 2 short summaries. 2 chapter summaries as well. It's a lot of reading. Good luck.
This professor tends to focus more on irrelevant details of papers rather than providing clear instructions. He is sometimes condescending to students who do not follow his instructions perfectly. There is often an unreasonable amount of reading on books that have little to do with the subject. BEWARE.
Pretty Good.... sometimes boring but informational.... and he constantly does lunges... he will literally put his foot on the desk and do a deep lunge in the middle of class... and then all the girls swoon. HA!
His class consists of 4 quizzes all which you have to read all the novels. 1 midterm and 1 final you do have to buy another book and read all the book for his tests. Lots of reading!! and also class documents. Not a hard class if you do the readings.
He is super awesome. Attendance is not mandatory but the tests are what he talks about. Only tests are the midterm and final which is basic information he goes over. If you take notes and understand what he says you'll do fine in his class. Really nice and he has optional extra credit study sessions which are great. P.S he loves donuts.
I hardly ever went to class BUT i did the readings and made sure to attend during quizzes, worksheets in class and tests. If you can teach yourself than you can pass this class.
Professor Auerbach is a very nice and funny guy. He made you feel comfortable asking for help if you ever needed it. I personally didn't like his teaching style because all he would do was lecture, but that's just me. If you take the right notes and do the readings, you should be fine.
Fun class to take and easily approachable when in need of help. There's a lot of reading for this class, but he goes over the book and the themes to help you understand it more. There are quizzes on the books but they're easy as long as you read. He gives practice tests before which half of those questions are on the actual test. Overall easy pass!
Professor assigns 4 books throughout the semester and makes you do quizzes and papers based off the readings. It is a history class and he grades and treats the class like an English class. He would deduct points off your papers for small grammatical errors and your grade will sink like the Titanic. Would not recommend.
Auerbach is a great professor and knowledgeable. His 19th century Europe is my LEAST favorite history class. It's more like an English class than a History class. You read 5 books + textbook. 3 essays plus the final essays (3) which focus mostly on the books. He is a tough essay grader, but gives solid feedback and makes you a better writer.
Auerbach assigns several different texts throughout the semester, that are followed by a quiz, and paper about the text. He is a very tough grader, and grades on a check system. The class focuses on religion toward the end of the semester. He does uses the text book and other books for the class.
This class is 4 books. 4 quizzes for each book. Midterm and with a optional Final. If you attend class and digest the lecture information, read the books and understand the main concepts, and turn in assignments on time. You should be able to earn a solid grade. Professor is passionate and is very welcoming for help. I would definitely take again
By far my fav history prof! Hes a tough grader and his course is heavy reading + essays, but his classes are interesting and engaging. Ive taken 3 courses with him and loved each one. He truly cares for students and creates an interesting class discussion. Dont be afraid of the readings, his quizzes on the readings are super straightforward.
Yes, he is a good teacher! He is a two-sided person for sure. So try to get on his good side by always participating and asking questions. He is very unprofessional and rude when you get the other side. He makes rude comments with your work when he says in the beginning that there is no wrong answer. Parents think of him as unprofessional as well
Not a very well-informed professor about his supposed specialty. He has a mediocre intellect and so he will not like it when you are smart. If you are a good writer he will punish you for it. Just better to avoid, but if you have to take him learn to play the game. Dumb yourself down and write below your level so he will be able to understand it!
AMAZING Professor. Ive taken 3 courses with him. He is a tough grader, but you will learn a lot about history AND writing in his class. He genuinely cares about his students. If you are struggling, communicate with him because he will go the extra mile to help you succeed. His classes truly taught me so much and Id highly recommend his courses!
In my opinion, Professor Auerbach is one of the best Professors out there. Yes, he grades harshly, but its because he wants to push you to do your utmost best at writing. This class was a writing thesis requirement course. He was always available to help you with research and writing tips. P.S. this is not the only class he teaches in one semester
HE IS INCREDIBLE. He's very passionate and answers all your questions with a great attitude. You do need to read though, a lot. But you can do it. Tests are open book and notes so you should be fine. Class is great
Professor Auerbach is overall a good professor, he teaches history in an interesting and passionate way. However, I think this professor focuses too much on grading the formatting of essays and tends to let that overshadow the actual content in them. I only say this is a problem because HIST 110 is a level 100 class. He can use tech well!
Took him during Fall 2020 and loved how Auerbach is upbeat in the morning. harsh grader on papers about the books assigned so be warned. (Can criticize harshly if you don't follow his instructions) On Zoom, forces students to turn on the their cameras. Lectures can be dry at times. Very nice guy who is passionate about history.
