Bender is really great! His lectures are casual and he's fun to listen to. There are guest lecturers and questions on the exam come from that so it's important to attend class and the plays. Only complaint is final was worth 55% so there's some pressure there, but study the slides and literally just listen and you should be just fine.
It's the first day of class and I am already dropping out. This should be an easy class with minimal work but he is way too strict and over demanding. $160 course fee and you have to see 5 plays outside of class-some in NY. Too much to do for such a simple class which could be so much easier. Im sure an A is possible, but I ain't doin all that work
Easy A class, some people are just lazy and expect not to do anything for this class. Yes there is a fee and you have to attend plays but if you study the slides and pay attention in class and at the plays you'll pass with an A. 3 out of the 5 plays I watched were really great! GPA Booster class and he gives a few E.C opportunities.
Absolutely loved him! He was funny and relatable and had a clear knowledge of what he was saying. I loved seeing plays during the semester it was a nice break from class. Make sure to attend class for the guest lecturers since questions come from that. GO TO CLASS and sit there and listen (no notes!) and I guarantee you can get an A. Take this.
I came for the A, stayed for the Jeff. This guy is passionate about his subject and gets you passionate too, even if you don't like theatre you really will end up appreciating it. Sometimes guest lecturers can be boring but other times they can make your day. He's hilarious and knows how to make the class laugh. 5/5 would recommend taking.
He is an extremely nice man. Wants to see his students do well and will do anything to make sure you do well.
Professor Bender is an incredible professor who thoroughly enjoys what he teaches. He is a real actor on the side and you could tell when he acts in class during lecture. He is very passionate about theater. Only 1 midterm and a final, both given in class. They are both mc, based on lecture and plays. Plays are fun, though not all are mandatory.
I love Professor Bender! Take him please. If you came for the easy A, you'll get it. If you came for your love of theater, you'll get it even more. He is so passionate and he is an actual broadway actor. It is one midterm and one final, so do study the easy lectures. You don't want to get a bad grade in the class for not studying easy material
This guy is what all professors should be, engaging, passionate, with real world experience in what they teach. Seriously I wanted the A and now I'm in love with broadway, the plays were great and he has a way of making lectures funny af, would recommend taking with a friend for a good time, go to lecture though because tests have random material.
Even though attendance was not mandatory I went to all of his classes because he is very funny and makes the material interesting to learn about. He only gives two exams, one 45% of your grade and one 55% of your grade, but he makes them very easy. As long as you attended lecture and the plays, then the exams were very straightforward.
Theater appreciation was a really fun class; however, I don't agree with the other reviews on the level of difficulty. If I didn't take notes, I wouldn't have done well on the exams. You are tested on arbitrary information which if I didn't review I would never have remembered. If you do put in minimal work and come to lectures it not bad though.
Dont take this class expecting an easy A. Reject emotions and stick to the facts. Yeah the guy is genuine, but the course is managed poorly for an appr course. Theres only 2 exams so you have no room for slack, the exam questions are arbitrary & detailed specific from the lectures/plays. Mandatory plays that are inconvenient. Not worth it imo.
He taught theater appreciation and made the class enjoyable even during the pandemic. He's a hilarious guy and a great lecturer. If you're looking to take a class for fun, this is it!
Professor bender was one of my favorite professors I have taken. EASILY. As someone who had no interest in theatre, he really made it interesting with the plays and guest lectures. Best chance for an A, is to watch all the plays, quizzes are easy and study the slides since the exams comes straight from them.
he's fine but the class is a little annoying. tests can have a lot of arbitrary and specific questions. grade is based on 4 quizzes (very easy) and 2 tests. probably not as easy of an A as youre thinking unless you memorize a lot of the stuff.
Easy A course. The lectures are recorded and he had a PowerPoint said that has the notes in them. You watch 4 plays and get a quiz on each one, very easy if you actually watch the play. One midterm and final both easy As, questions straight from the lecture video and PowerPoints.
Absolutely amazing prof. 10/10 recommend to fulfill the core requirement. Was very considerate and patient considering the current pandemic and our inability to see plays in-person. But he made it work, nonetheless. Exams are straight from the lectures, Take this class! You won't regret it.
Professor Bender's class was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. All questions on exams come straight from the slides so it is essentially straight memorization. Professor Bender also made a strong attempt to make lectures as interesting as possible with his funny personality. Overall, I would highly recommend this class.
Theater Appreciation asynchronously was a SUPER easy class. Prof Bender was really funny and some of the musicals and plays he chose were interesting. Exams are super easy, straight from slides, and quizzes for plays/musicals are short and easy. Watching the guest lectures and lectures are important.
Great Prof! Very funny, kind, and you can tell that he loves what he's doing. Took intro to theater app and I really liked it. Not hard to get an A. Take this class if u need the core requirement!
Professor is super chill. Class is every easy. As long as you watch the plays, you can ace all the quizzes. Exams questions are straight from the lecture slides and sometimes what he says in the lectures. Take this class if you want an easy A and not much workload.
Professor Bender is so kind and very passionate about this class. There is no homework for the class other than watching the weekly lectures. He also assigns 4 plays a 5 question quiz on each of them. There is also a midterm and a final. Theater Appreciation is super interesting and an easy A. Take this if you want to fulfill an AHp or AHo!
Professor Bender is amazing - he's a great person and very understanding. Lenient with deadlines, offers extra credit, and super easy to pass. He's so great to talk to outside of class, literally just set up a zoom meeting to introduce yourself and to meet him and he will be so grateful. Would definitely take him again!
Super easy class. 1 midterm, 1 final 4 quizzes based on 4 plays you have to watch. Also offers 6% final grade boost extra credit.
Only grades come from the 5 quizzes you take on watching 5 different shows. The midterm and the final are both multiple choice. You also have the opportunity to write two extra credit papers. Really easy class, and he's always available if you need help.
Professor Jeffrey Bender is passionate about theater and caring for his students. The course comprises lectures, hand-selected plays, quizzes, and two exams. This is a great lightweight course. Use the PPTs, watch the plays and guest lectures, watch the professor's comprehensive lecture videos. Effective professor.
Jeff is absolutely hilarious and loves what he does. You can see and hear his passion when he gets to talk about theater and he truly wants his students to feel the same way he does. He's so understanding and lenient with everything and offers extra credit. He gives study guides, too. Definitely would recommend taking!
Just take this class. He is so sweet and his lectures were so funny. A wonderful, wonderful teacher!
Awesome professor, really loves his craft.
Easy A. Theater appreciation itself is an easy A and professor Bender is so nice. He's really good at explaining things and his exams are exactly like his slides. But he really does help you appreciate theater and towards the end the last few lectures were super fun. Take this class for an easy A and core credit
You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and all around it is just a very enjoyable course. I hate when classes are about passing and numbers but he just wants you to enjoy and appreciate the material as much as he does. And you will! In all honesty, I don't go to my other classes but I show up to this one because I genuinely enjoy it.
He is so good at what he does and so passionate about what he teaches! He is also very knowledgable about what he does. His lectures are interesting if you pay attention and listening to him. He has open discussions about the plays/musicals we watched and he loves listening to his students.
He is an amazing professor!! He cares so much about theater and what he teaches. He tries to make he lectures quick and interesting. He enjoys interacting with his students. He cares about his students a lot. Would definitely recommend taking his class.
Easy class that can be interesting if you care about theater and everything. Even if you are not really interested, it is very very easy. Make the most out of it though and the plays you get to go to, especially the one Broadway play you have to go to in NYC. Take with friends/have someone who wants to come to broadway with you. Overall, it is easy
jeff was really cool and very passionate about theater. genuinely enjoyed the class and its very easy, just put in effort and you'll get an A
He's okay. For me, the class was harder than some people made it out to be; a lot of memorizing for me. Wish he recorded in-person lectures. Our class was really rude and disrespectful, so it makes sense why he stopped posting slides. He loves his work and is really passionate about. Just make sure you keep up with the slides and you will be fine.
An absolute gem of a professor! Professor Bender was one of the kindest and most considerate professors I had who tried his best to make his class convenient for students. His lectures are really funny and engaging too!
Bender is so kind and cares so much about theater. He was always accommodating to students and offered every possible opportunity (tons of extra credit) for us to be successful. A great prof and a very nice guy.
He is awesome! I never thought I would like theater as much as I do now, and it's all thanks to him. I loved watching all the assigned plays. He makes the class interesting and informative. He is also kind and caring in person. Just go over the definitions on his slides, and you should do well in his class.
To be honest I did have to study quite a bit for this class but that's only because I have no prior knowledge about the topic. Exams are fairly easy and rely a lot on memorization. He's very engaging and makes lectures fun! You can tell that he really enjoys what he does.
Professor Bender is incredibly knowledgeable about the art of theater and this class was worth taking because of his interesting lectures and the shows you get to experience in the meantime. He also accommodates students who hand in late assignments.
Professor Bender is truly a gem. He is passionate about what he does. The course relies on going to 4 shows consisting of 3 university shows and one broadway show. Each with a small 5-question easy quiz. The class itself is simple. lectures which the majority of the time end early. Studying for the midterm and final is the only thing scary.
This guy was so cool honestly his lectures were more like a performance. He is so personable and really is passionate about what he does. You have to attend 3 small production plays and then one broadway show in NYC. There is a short 5 question quiz after each show as well as 1 midterm and a final. Read the slides and the exams will be easy!
He's a hysterical guy, clearly loves what he teaches. 4 required plays, 1 in NYC, w/extra credit opportunities. Graded on 4 mini quizzes per each play, a midterm, and a final. But, he doesn't post his slides on canvas so you have to show up to get the information. An easy A class, and a fun one too!
amazing prof. Such a fun guy and easy class. 4 required plays to watch, mini quizzes on them are very easy. In person midterm but online final.
Such an easy, and fun class! 4 plays required, and you have to study pretty good for midterm, but overall a stress free class.
Great professor who loves what he does! This class is a great experience and you can watch plays with classmates or bring people outside of class. You will definitely have to study if you don't pay attention or know about the topic.
Professor Bender is amazing professor! Passionate about what he does,The class itself is quite easy. 4 mandatory plays to watch, which will have easy 4 quizzes after each show. He gives out extra credit opportunity. The only thing is midterm is in person and which overall comes from his slides. So make sure you attend all lectures.
One of the easiest classes I've taken at Rutgers and made me more interested in theater. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would recommend going to lectures or looking over the slides. 1 midterm, 1 final, and a few quizzes based on a play.
Professor Bender is great!! After taking this class I like theater a lot more, and the guest lecturers he had were pretty cool, definitely make sure you go over the slides, whenever he has a guest he doesn't post them on canvas so gotta go to class then. Overall the class is fun just make sure you study for the exam!
A great professor who loves what he does! Really great class to take if you're looking to fulfill the SAS core requirement. There's two exams, a midterm and a final, which are based on the lectures he gives + guest lectures. There's also 4 plays in total you have to attend and take quizzes for, but they're all really easy. Highly highly recommend!
I took this class because people said it was easy and fun and they weren't wrong! Professor Bender is a wonderful professor and passionate about what he teaches! 4 mandatory plays with quizzes after you see them, a midterm, and a final. Make sure to attend lecture because most of his slides are on the midterm along with guest speakers. I recommend!
Very easy class and also very fun. There are mandatory four plays that you need to attend, with quizzes on each one. And then a midterm and an online final. Overall, it was a very easy class and I would definitely take it again if I could. One of the plays, however, is on Broadway, so try and make friends to go with!
Easiest A in my life, showed up to like two classes. But bro made me watch a whack show in broadway. He's really nice and funny tho
Quiz:20% (4 total, 1 per play), Midterm:35%, Final:45%. Very easy class and has a fun professor. Attendance is not required but if section comes he will upload his notes otherwise you have to rely and take your own notes. Plenty of extra credit opportunities for going and watching plays and making a video on them. Rutgers play are required attendan
just show up and copy his slides, easy A, also go to the plays
Professor Bender is such a great person and a fantastic lecturer. The class is very straight froward but make sure to take notes on the slides and go to the plays. It's an easy A class but like any other class you have to put in an equal effort.
4 quizzes based on plays and midterm&final. Just survive the midterm, you will be fine.
Professor is a funny guy and the class is extremely easy. Only 1 midterm and 1 final (online) the entire semester. You also get the opportunity to watch a Broadway show in New York so make sure you take this class with a friend.
Would 100% take this class again. Bender is an amazing professor and is just and overall nice guy. The shows are pretty interesting and the quizzes aren't bad at all. :))
Caring and nice professor with easy quizzes and tests.
Bender is such a funny guy and he is very good. Even if you don't care for theater, his class is fun and light. I will say is do attend the lectures for the midterm, Also you will have to go see 4 shows which isn't a big issue but one is on broadway so familiarize yourself with the train. Regardless this class was my fav and bender is awesome
This is a W professor. You gotta take this class for credit, the class is so fun and back to the future was fire. 10/10. I did horrible on the midterm and still ended with an A.
Great professor and genuine guy, as long as you get at least a C on the midterm, the rest of the class is an easy A. Even if you don't do good, he provided 3 extra credit opportunities for the class. 10/10 would take him again.
Easiest class ever. Take it to knock out your sas core requirements.
Either show up to the lectures to get notes since he doesn't post all of them or take the risk of possibly getting them through a friend or groupme. With the notes, a solid hour of studying prior to exams is plently to get an A.
Such an amazing class. Didn't have to attend a lecture, but have to do four outside events, which are typically on the weekend, so be prepared to give that up sometimes. Overall, very easy course!!
Dr. Bender was absolutely amazing. Super funny guy, and this class is incredibly easy as long as you attend the required plays (one of which is on Broadway!). He made lectures engaging and interesting; you can tell he is very passionate about theater. I would take him again without a doubt. Super fun class. If you need an art gen ed, take this!
This class was actually so free and fun like please take it guys.
Super easy but interesting course. Bender is a great guy and makes lecture fun. Attendance isn't mandatory and neither are the plays. Cool class if you use the resources, otherwise easy A. great SAS requirement course.
Really good professor and easy, fun class. Go to class, go to the plays; if you study the lecture material and know the plays well, you'll do amazing in this class.
He was an amazing guy, you have to watch 4 plays outside of class, he offers room for extra credit, class is very very doable, lectures were interesting, lots of notes! I would 100% take his class over and over again if i could. only a midterm and final, and then 4 five question quizzes about the plays we watch. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM !! GPA booster!
Bender is a cool guy, check out his website. Make friends, go to plays, have fun, than get an A. Make friends so the midterm and final is easy. Midterm was in person so either study notes or figure it out, final is usually online cause he gets booked for a play, not always tho. make sure you have notes on hand.
This professor was awesome. Super easy class and a very funny guy. Also, the plays were actually interesting, and I started developing an interest in theater performances, never thought I would ever say that, but this guy gets the credit.
Professor Bender is such a sweet guy. I love him. I took this course as an elective and had so much fun. You get to see 4 plays, one of which is on Broadway. He had great energy, and I would totally take this class again if I could.
Professor Bender is AWESOME! There are only 4 “assignments” which are just 4 shows you see outside of class, take a quick quiz on, and then openly discuss in class! He's is so funny, so kind, and actually makes theater and his own class interesting. Great for an SAS requirement class, or take it to see some shows for HOMEWORK! 10/10. Love Bender!
one of the best professors i've ever had. professor bender is such a funny and caring guy who does his best to make his class fun and entertaining. take this for your sas requirement!
Best professor and class you could ever take at Rutgers. Even if you do not care for theater this class will still be easy and fun. You get to see 1 show on Broadway and 3 Rutgers performances. If you are looking for a class to take then take theater appreciation.
EASIEST class of all time. you get to see a bway show and 3 other shows. fun lectures and attendance isnt mandatory but you should go because he's really funny and he usually posts the slides a week before the exam if enough people are coming. the exams are easy and he offers extra credit. re evaluate your education if you manage to fail this class
Professor Bender is the absolute GOAT. He is one of the kindest professors I have ever had. I would recommend everyone take his Theater Appreciation class. His lectures are interesting and engaging. He truly cares about every one of his students. He always extended quizzes and told us what to focus on for the exams. Literally love him!!
Professor Bender is one of the best professors I've encountered at Rutgers! Our midterm had a 5 point curve, and he rounded everyone's final grade up to the nearest whole number. He also lowered the grade cutoff—an A went from 92 down to 90! My raw grade was originally a B, but he bumped it all the way to an A!

I usually hate lectures, but Prof Bender is so funny and engaging that I stick around and come to class consistently, even in a 200+ person lecture where attendance isn't mandatory. This class is so fun, and exam heavy (which is easy to study for if you take good notes or use quizlet!!)
He is a kind, funny, and easygoing professor. The class requires watching four plays and completing four quizzes on them, along with a midterm and an online final. He's genuinely super sweet, loves to joke around, and keeps the class engaging. He also brings in cool guest lecturers, which makes the course more interesting and enjoyable overall.
