He is a good teacher and his lectures make sence. The only problem is that the course is very difficult in itself. But if the choice is between him and Malikiyan I'll take Charonnat. Study his previous exams online to do well!!!
I took this class a while ago, but i'd have to say that hes the best teacher to learn o-chem from. The other choices arent very good. DEFINATELY take o-chem with charonnat for 333 AND 334; it will seriously be worth it.
Took 333 with Melikyan and got a D. Repeated w/Charonat and got a B-.
Do not like this class at all. Very boring teacher much like Mr. Rogers. Gives quizzes once a week but homework is due the week after the test. Does not give studie guides for test either.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He has the stereotypical look of what most chem teachers have (a$$h%le). Makes his lectures seem easy but once the tests come, he makes them impossible.. and seems like he doesnt want to help u either.
Charonnat is the chemistry guru. He is the man. Take his class. Generous curve on exams, 80% is an A. 70% B, etc.
charronat is a good person but not such a great teacher. his tests have nothing to do with the notes and his tests are worded weird. Hes pretty funny and he likes to fuss with the papers on his desk...he ALWAYS rearranges them. hes very nice and answers all questions. GREAT CURVE!!! ITAMAZING!!
cool person to take
I njoyed being in his class and going to class, he made the subject fun to learn and much easier to understand. people say the class is ridiculously hard and impossible, but he makes it possible. I recommend him to everybody. I wish he was teaching 334 for spring. just study and ask quest.
Cool Prof.....Helps Students out, tests are fair. Recommended
A great teacher. He went above and beyond in helping his students after class. He's clear, organized, fair and effective.
Awsome, he's very organized, and will answer q's during offic hours. Make sure to keep up with lecture notes and study his previous exams that are posted online.
He is an okay professor, but his class is very difficult. Study day and night to just pass his tests. Which are sometimes rediculously difficult!!! If you decide to take him...all I can say is: "GOOD LUCK" you'll need it!
Very hard grader not very helpful and very difficult class. His notes are really terrible and they are very basic and unclear. The notes dont really explain anything. I would not recommend this professor to anyone. If you take him you will be lucky if you pass the class.
This class is involving, there are at least 12 practice exams on line and you have to do in other to pass each exam. His notes may look small but do have a lot, pple who complain about the notes, never really paid attention in class.u also have to attend class in other to understand what is written.overall,he is really good & I would take him again.
exams test maybe 10% actual understanding, the rest is straight memorization... thats all you can ask for in o chem. if you know the reactions, you will succeed. straightforward, highly recommend.
Nice man grades fair, he gives a fair amount of partial credit on tests. Is not as hard grader as Melikian. But he talks in a monotone voice that sometimes can be boring.(reminds me of Ben Styne). For an Ochem class he is not as harsh as other professors. Do his practice tests, it helps out a lot.
He was the best professor I had at CSUN. He made organic chemistry very easy to comprehend. He was also extremely helpful outside of class in his office hours. Hands down, one of the best faculty members at CSUN.
Dr. Charronat is one of the best professors on campus and easily top 5 in science.
Very difficult prof. Nice man, but in order to succeed in his 334 course you have to have taken him for 333. His material was very complicated and had way too much information. I got an A in 333 but had to drop his class or I would fail it. Not very helpful in class, all he cared was to write all his notes on the chalkboard w/out explaining.
Lectures are very monotone and boring. His tests are hard but he gives partial credit. He assumes everyone in the class has a strong chemistry background and it is easy to loose the grip on what he is saying. He is very intelligent but not recomended for non-chem majors. Hietbrink or Minehan serve as a much better choice.
He is such a nice person and is very respectful. He is very patient and speaks with a low voice that I can't imagine he ever shouted in his life. In spite of all these, his class was one of the hardest classes that I've ever had. You should study day and night to be able to get a B. I maen "A" is kind of a dream unless you have the exam questions ;
Lectures did not help at all. He is more interested in writing all this notes on the board than teaching. Nice quiet man, but terrible at explaining. Basically had to learn from the textbook alone.
Good professor. Very difficult tests. Neat lectures. Not sufficient for a descent grade in the class. If you have not met your o.chem book, this is the class where you will become goodpals with it. Study the smallest details in o.chem and you should do ok. Very helpful during office hours. A B in his class is equivalent to an A+ in Melikyan's.
Far from easy, and definately requires a lot of effort. Hes not really interested in answering your questions during lecture, he lacks the patience for it and is far too concerned with getting his lecture notes up on the board, which are of NO help! If you plan on taking the course, expect to learn it yourself using the text.
A very knowledgeable person with a great passion for chemistry. He has a difficult time conveying this information to the class via his lectures. The schedule seems more important to him than the understanding of the students. Chemistry majors have a great deal to learn from Professor Charonat, but I recommend another for nonchem majors.
well, Dr. C knows his chemistry. But good luck in having him explain things to you. He speeds through things, puts 50 mechanisms on the board and one MAY show up on the test. Some teachers know their subject in and out but cant teach the damn thing. Professor C is one of these guys!!
He is an ok professor..His exams arent too bad if you know what you are doing, but like any ochem class there is going to be some time involved as far as proper studying time..and some difficulty. He is approachable but is not very helpful when explaining problems..he basically leave it up to you to figure out, go to tutoring, or whatever the case
This class was hard, but all ochem classes are hard. His exams are okay if you do all his online exams. Needs a lot of studying. What i recommend is to find a smart study buddy or go to tutoring.
One of the best professors at CSUN.Need to put in the time for this class. Answers all questions and is very helpful.

One of the best teacher at CSUN. tough class, have to put in time.
Great class to take for serious Chemistry students. Lectures are clear, concise, and supplement the textbook well. If you want to succeed in this class, you have to meet him halfway. He does NOT show you how to do the problems, and the exams are short and extremely unforgiving (missing two to three questions can leave you with a low B or even a C).
Unwilling to answer questions and is a jerk when you ask him for help. Goes way to fast and expects you to know everything about a subject before he teaches it!
one of the WORST prof. i've ever had. he does NOT show you how to solve/do the problems that he tests you on. he is HORRIBLE...avoid at all cause
Students are very luck to have an outstanding professor like Dr. Charonnat. Its like getting a Stanford/Columbia education in CSUN. He is very organized, lectures are clear and teaches very effectively. Some people who rated him are very unfair. Professors teach us the basic concepts so we can apply them in harder problems. That's why the exams are
people who don't like him probably don't study enough Good professor, makes everything available for you to succeed He tells you what problems to study puts his old tests online and has reviews before every test which are on mondays so that you have more time to study You need to work hard to understand the material that is why some don't like him.
Charonnat is a great professor! knows what he's talking about. very concise and clear and organized. he wants you to do well. all previous tests are online, so you'll have good practice. he is a fair grader. make sure to do the hw and read before class. overall, an awesome teacher!
The subject is hard. He's terrific at giving partial credit and he made it very possible to pass this class in the summer.
Very nice teacher. Gives very fair partial credits on the exams. Explanes very slowly, so you can understand everything. As I said gives partial credits if he sees that you know what you are writting about, but the tests are pretty hard.
This guy is unbelievable. If you've never fallen asleep in a class...you will this time. His tests are hard. Multiple choice kills you even if you've studied for it. They're just curve balls. Overall his tests are pretty hard. He tells you what to expect on the test but doesn't follow it himself. Notes are lacking in details. Avoid him.
The first time i took this course with another professor, I failed. When I re-took it with Charonnat, I passed! He made it much easier to understand. He is very organized and makes sure that everyone is keeping up with the lecture. Study his old exams online and you should be fine.
Simply put his notes are the BEST. Not the best lecturer though. I am taking my notebook with his notes even to Med School. You still have to study the book along with his notes to clarify some topics. A great ochem professor. Just keep up with his notes and don't fall behind and you will do fine.
One of the best chemistry professors around. Although his test are generally very challenging, his teaching method is very helpful in actually understanding what the heck you are doing. Is very willing to help if you ask. Don't wait till the last minute to study. Look at the book to help you understand, and LOOK AT HIS OLD EXAMS!!!
He has good notes, but that's about it. He spends a lot of time writing out all of the notes on the board, telling stories, and using analogies that probably lead to more confusion than anything. He doesn't directly answer questions and seems to have trouble understanding what students are actually asking. Tests are hard, but he's an easy grader.
One of the best professor I've ever had. He makes O-Chem much more fun and possible. He gives us a review session before each exam. I highly recommend him. He has been teaching O-Chem for a long time. His technique and motivation are very effective.
Just study his lecture, do homework and follow his way. The exams are hard. You have to know everything in details.
This guy is awesome. If you want to learn how to study for OCHEM, this is the right guy for you. NICE guy, great teacher, super approachable, I wish he was my dad. SUPER COOL. Seriously, he's slow in the lectures, but hey, Ochem requires a lot of patience and time to understand. First half of the class, tough, but later, it's a JOY ride. just study
Just stay away! Trust me! Hes a nice guy but cannot teach if his life depended on it!
super hard teacher. I really took a chance taking him. Tests are really hard and multiple choice ruins your grade. hes really nice in class but makes you feel dumb in his office hours. he does not curve at all, even if the whole class is failing. explains well, but i would just take an easier professor. i worked my ass off and got a C
very awkward, and has favorites in the class. condescending and rude during office hours - really different from when i took him for 333/334. the class is not worth it.
Not an easy class, I would stay away if you can.
here's the facts: he is not gonna go out of his way to help you, he's not gonna make things easy because o-chem is a hard subject. he is very good at giving over his knowledge in a clear fashion, but that's it. so if youre a hard worker and wanna know o-chem, take him. if you want a free ride or at least a fun one, don't.
do not take this class. he gives really good notes but all his examples are extremely easy and his tests are really hard. he told me he didn't have time to answer my questions when I asked after class. you pretty much have to read the book and do all the problems to understand which is fine if you are ony taking this class.
Organic Chemistry is hard regardless of which teacher you have, and Charonnet isn't going to make it easy. That being said, he gives (in my opinion) the best lectures of any organic chem. professor at csun. His tests are hard but getting an A isn't impossible. I know multiple students that had over 95% going into the final ( 80% is an A)
Extremely hard tests, however his lectures are CRYSTAL clear. Very helpful when asking questions. I failed my first time in 333 at comm. college and then got a C second time. In 334 with Charonnat I got a C the first time. Doesn't sound so good but I was one of few to pass class with C or above so work your butt off and you'll pass and learn.
not an impossible class..notes are very clear..tests are straight from his notes and previous tests..study extremely hard and you should get an A.
Great professor for O-Chem! Dr. Charonnat has clear lecture notes and is very organized. He posts old midterms/finals on his website which is very helpful. The class is difficult, but with hard work you'll come out knowing the material.
Honestly he is not a bad teacher at all. I came on here and read some comments and was fooled. He is a great professor. I just never gave him a chance at first and that cost me. I got a C in his class. I worked my butt off. But it's all my fault. If you stay consistent with you notes and review them and know the material in the notes you will pass!
I took his class after failing the first time with another prof. I wish my first exposure to OChem was with Dr. Charonnat. He made the subject interesting and he is very well organized. Study his lecture notes and homework problems and you'll do well.
Lectures were very very straight forward and organized. While attendance isnt mandatory, missing a lecture can be extremely costly. Previous years tests are posted, and in all honesty, thats all you really need to study, excluding the lecture notes. Fairly easy A considering 80% and above is an A
He is a nice guy but a horrible teacher. Our micro biology teacher explained chemistry to us better. Charonnat will only teach you therory and does not review problems before the test. Watch YouTube chemistry videos and read your book. For non chemistry majors good luck to you....
Dr. Charonnat's lectures are very organized and clear. His tests are challenging but not impossible especially since all of his old tests are posted online. He gives partial credit. It's not a class for lazy students but study hard and you can get a good grade.
I wish his tests were more about understanding the material rather than memorizing bits of info. Organized lectures but when you ask him a question, he just repeats exactly what he said before.
His lectures are well organized and he's very clear when he explains concepts. What I really disliked was his exams. They're very challenging and require some memorization even though he said that you shouldn't memorize. I do wish that his tests were more concentrated on concepts rather than vocabulary. Overall, I would recommend but be prepared.
While I'm sure Doctor Charonnat is a marvelous researcher, as an instructor he leaves much to be desired. Tests don't see how well you understand the material, they test how detailed your notes are and how much of them you memorized. The amount of effort you put in does not reflect in your grade. Avoid this professor if possible.
Dr.Charonnat is the best OChem professor at CSUN! His lecture notes are very organized and crystal clear.. his tests are very challenging!! Mske sure that you know everything on your notes and do the HW! Ochem is not an easy class so if want to get a good grade be ready to study Ochem everyday!!!
Very well organized in lecture but didn't like answering questions in class. He kept reiterating understanding concepts and not memorizing but his tests were ALL about memorization and had very little to do with the concepts. He is the only prof who teaches this class so your stuck. Do the practice problems in the book and buy the solutions manual.
This class is organized for a fail, So far everyone in my class that I had talked to has a Fail grade. I suggest avoiding taking this class at CSUN, unless you take a 2 semester course. Professor does his best to do the impossible. Requires a lot of outside work and research in order to even understand the material. HW and txtbook will not cut it
Dr. Charonnat is the best!! You'll understand everything in class!! his lecture is amazing! the tests are not hard at all! getting an A in this class is very easy because A starts from 80%. so dont even think, just add him.. you wont regret..
Very unclear. Used a projector for most lectures and sped through them. Was extremely boring and unhelpful. This class is a challenge but Charonnat jsut made it worse. I would not recommend taking this course or any other with him.
Really hard class! If you can take the class somewhere else please do. I had to retake the class a 2nd time. Make sure you get tutoring, read the book, attend class, and do lots of practice problems! He is boring & not very helpful. Speeds through the (extensive) class material. Problems in tests r more complex than the ones showed in class.
This class is the hardest class I've ever taken in my entire college career. It's much more difficult because it's condensed into one semster but he does not really help you understand the material. Had to get several tutors. Book is useless. Go to office hours and don't give up! Avoid this class at CSUN if you can.
this class the hardest class although I expected it to be much easier than it was !! the prof was extremely hard to understand and he gives very very very hard tests !! not helpful and not recommended at all!! he's also RUDE!! tough grading!!!I ENDED WITH C WITH HARD WORKING!
O chem was the hardest class I've taken. However, Dr. C helped me through it. Although his lectures were unclear and hard to follow, he helped me through problems in office hours and didn't mind repeating concepts again. In my opinion, Dr. C is a fair grader, and works with people who are trying but struggling. Only professor who teaches 235.
Extremly easy course! Profesor lectures can be dry but he moves slowly so its easy to understand the material coverered and he is always willing to help but as heads up dont get on his bad side or else youll have a tough semester in addition exams are straight foward simply plug & chug and as a heads up Hw is optinal when if taken in the summer
Charonnat seems to love concepts and testing on detail of the smallest of things. I highly suggest being VERY detailed with your notes and do the practice exams. His exams are horrendously difficult and detailed in my opinion. I felt like I had to know every word in the book and still didn't pay off. He's a nice guy though but monotone and boring.
DO NOT MISS HIS LECTURES. His test is based on the lecture notes. Use the previous exams as study problems. Do not even try to memorize, just complete with correct answers at least 3-5 of his previous exams before the test and I guarantee you at least a B+. I was so surprised at how effective this method works. Got an A in the class.
Got an A. The keys to getting an A in this class: 1.) Have a very good start in your grade (first exam is the easiest). 2.) Take notes exactly as written + some personal side notes (such as "what is the mechanism of this"). 3.) Complete as many of the posted previous exams as you can initially with notes, until you can complete one by yourself.
CSUN has a excellent chemistry department and Dr. Charonnat is one of the best professors I've had. Tips: Attend every class. Write down everything + explanations. He gives you everything you need to know but expects students to apply it, so do a lot of practice problems.
I work fulltime and decided to retake during summer and I managed a C in the end. Mixed up two small things and dropped from a possible B to C- in one exam so be careful! If he sees you're really trying he'll cut you some slack on partial credit. Prepare to be challenged and do as many practice problems as possible! You'll EARN your grade here. :)
Prof. Charonnat is very passionate about Organic Chemistry. The subject it's self is really difficult. What's great about Charonnat is that he's got past exams that you can use as practice. Try to sit in the from of the classroom so you can hear him. Hard to pay attention sometimes but just take good notes.
Professor Charonnat is one of the best professors I have taken here at CSUN. He makes Organic Chemistry very clear and concise to a point where if you follow his lectures, you won't need the book. Go to class, take VERY good notes, do as many practice exams as you can before the exams and you should pass with at least a B.
The material is not easy to begin with so don't expect the class to be that way. BUT! He does a great job at explaining reactions and retro-syn, he delivers fun facts every now and then. He is genuinely interested in you understanding the material, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Has all previous midterms online for you to practice off of since 1994!
what he goes over in class is extremely generic and basic. He is very easy to follow in class but what you learn in class will not help you for his exams. in this class you need to go and get some tutoring to prepare for his exams. The Book itself is a challenge to understand. but with plenty of hours of studying the book should suffice.
This professor is the best take him if you get lucky!!!!
He is really nice and clear and you will learn a lot. But he is really precise in grading and expect you to write down every detail which is not fair for a hard subject like organic chemistry. He will take off a lot of points for careless mistakes (e.g. missing lone pair, spacing in naming). +Don't take discussion class; it's not gonna help.
Ochem sucks. BUT Charonnat is the best chem professor I've had. His lectures are long and boring but he gives you all of the resources you need to get an A. Take recitation if you can because he uses similar problems on exams. If you take good notes and do 7 or 8 past exams for each midterm, there is no way you will get a bad grade.
Great prof for a hard subj. READ THE BOOK, IT HELPS. I know it sucks, but it could save you. Just because it's not in his lectures, doesn't mean it won't be on the test (most likely will be on his practice tests- do them!). Makes you work for his help, go in groups. great person, cute, old, and sharp. Don't worry, alllectures makes sense in the end.
Do previous exams he provides on his website. It will help you tremendously, he's really into the main points, If you do many previous exams it'll help you know what to focus on. You can definitely get an A
i consider myself lucky that i had a opportunity to be a student of prof. chanonnat. he is a very knowledgeable man, with a great manner and great sense of humor( not that he cracks jokes every second but he is funny in very polite and genius way. lectures are clear but never miss one or u wold be lost for the next 2-3 lectures. proudtobehisstudnt
If you sit in the back row, you won't hear a thing. If you sit in the front, you still won't hear a thing because you will fall asleep. Very boring and sometimes goes over one hour and 15 minutes and he will keep talking and talking and you might be late to your next class. He covers a lot of material in one lecture. You can easily fall behind.
Amazing professor! I really enjoyed taking my first semester of O-chem with him and will most definitely be taking my second semester with him. He makes things fun and interesting and explains the concepts very well. Make sure to read and do the practice tests and quizzes and you will definitely come out with a good grade.
Do not take him unless you take 10 coffee shots before his lectures. He is very monotone and you will likely want to sleep within the first 15 minutes. I was excited about organic chem, but it is almost impossible to stay awake in there. The exams are tough and discussion sheets are time consuming. If you miss one lecture you will be lost.
Really enjoyed his class. A bit dry and always goes over the class time but he gives you a SOLID foundation in O Chem. Any Qs about lecture go to office hours & he'll explain again. Here's what I did: I read the chapters & did ALL of the suggested problems on syllabus & got a good grade. I only glanced @ pract. tests for format but I never did them
Tough class. Commit your semester to this class, do not slack off, study everything he lectures on and do not rely on the practice exams as a way to prepare. I was ready to pull my hair out by the end of the semester with this class. best of luck!
Professor Charonnat is a great instructor. Yes, he speaks at a low volume and often goes beyond the set lecture times, but he really makes an effort to cover everything that you need to know. To succeed, on top of lecture, make sure to read, do hw problems, watch youtube videos, talk to a tutor, dedicate at least 20 hours to studying every week.
I consider myself lucky to be able to attend both ochem 1 and 2 with the most brilliant man in chemistry. Prof. Charonnat is a tough grader but he really cares that you learn the concept rather than purely memorizing mechanisms. He gives partial credit as long as you show a slight sign of knowledge. Be prepared to study at least five hours a week.
The whole course is based off 2 exams and a final. Since there is so much material it was hard to learn while making sure you were writing every single thing down. I wish he put his outline notes online. That way we can listen during his lectures instead of frantically copy down notes. And he doesn't let you take pics. That would have helped a lot.
He is, without a doubt, the most brilliant man you will ever meet. His course is based on two midterms, a final, & discussion (consists of 3 quizzes, problems sets, & attendance). His lectures are tedious but informative. Tests are focused on lectures & are tricky but fair. He posts previous exams online so you know what to expect/focus on.
Great guy and great instructor, be prepared to hear plenty of stories. This class is structured to be a mostly self-guided experience, but he does give a very detailed intro with plenty of information to start you off.
Solid Professor. 2 Midterms and 2 Quizzes. We have Weekly Problem Sets where we pick 4 people to turn in as a composite set which I hated. Got a C on 1st exam but ended up with an A at the end. He made comments on my exams and I went to his office hours and studied alot. Tip: Read over the notes then match them up with the textbook, do problems.
This class was a lot of work! The class never ends on time, we are usually there at least 30 minutes over to finish all of the labs. He is a pretty nice grader on the reports though. There are two group presentations. The final was ridiculously hard, but it's not worth much.
Generous grader. Try not to leave anything blank on your quizzes/exams! Pay attention, ask questions, study from past exams he has posted online. 3 exams (final included) for lecture. For discussion you have a problem set due weekly (w/group), 3 quizzes. Go to class and STAY OFF YOUR PHONE! Read book for more info and do problems for extra practice
He is a great professor and any student would be lucky to be in his class. He is so smart and passionate about Ochem and he really knows what he is talking about. Make sure to read the book and take time to actually do the problem sets to help in the future. The final was the hardest tests so make sure to study in advance.
Honestly he is a very nice man, but if you struggle with chemistry this is not the teacher for you. He teaches it as if you already would know the material. I studied all his problem sets before each quiz and test. I also did the problems issued by the book. His tests are extremely hard compared to both of those study aids.
Do not rely on past test or problem sets to study. It will not help. Only way to do good is to actually understand chemistry. Sounds easy to do, but its not. Rumor has it that he curves, but those turned out to be false. He didn't curve for my class. He is smart but thinks everyone loves chem like he does.
VERY HARD GRADER. Be prepared to be graded like no other. All tests are written and he gives "partial" credit. You receive less than half points if you make one error.
Horrible, avoid. The tests are so hard even if you study weeks in advance, you still could end up failing them. Good Luck!
He is the GOAT of Ochem. Jeff is great and can come off a bit awkward and dry but that's because its just reviewing gen chem stuff but as soon as you finish, you get right into the nitty gritty of ochem. He's a great professor and its been a semester since I've taken ochem and now in ochem 2 and he helped me build a good foundation. take him.
Judge mental in 333R, he puts you in groups, and gives you assignments but does not go over them, he expects you to know mechanisms that are hardly covered in the book, and he does not explain them when asked to explain what you did wrong, he treats you like you are a dumb fool if you cannot answer a question for the rest of the semester,
He's a great guy , you have to get used to how he talks and he is very kind in office hours, take really good notes and review them daily, the tests are based on the notes, previous exams will give you an idea of the format of the next exam, sitting in the front is helpful because he tends to speak softly, he lectures by using the whiteboard
The best advice i can give if you want an A is: Read the material before he goes over it in lectures, take the problem sets seriously, and do the problems from the book. Use the past exams to study, as they will give you a good idea of what to expect. (go over more than one). start studying at least two weeks in advance and you should be fine.
Study his notes & work on the assigned problems and you'll guarantee a decent grade.
Study his notes carefully, do the suggested textbook problems, and re-do discussion problems for extra practice. Jeff really wants you to understand this stuff on a conceptual level, not just memorize it. Use previous exams as a tool for practice, not a study guide. He teaches well, you just need to pay attention during lecture and ask questions.
Hes the best! READ THE BOOK BEFORE CLASS, take good notes (everything he says), do the book probs, actually try on the problem sets, do many old tests & quizzes to practice. there won't be any surprises! U GET WHAT U PUT IN - WORK HARD & U'LL DO WELL. Everyone complains about ochem but pay attn, don't freak out, & u'll be fine- he's an amazing prof
Best Ochem professor ever! He literally posts all old tests online which make great study tools! If you do the old tests and show up to take notes you'll pass! He is very nice and makes it evident that he wants you to succeed. Only downside is that he continues to lecture even after class is over. Besides that, he is an excellent professor.
Dr. Charonnat's class, although not the easiest, is so well organized, you won't need to the book or watch too many youtube tutorials. He KNOWS what he is doing. His office hours and review sessions before exams are crucial if you want the A. He posts all his previous quizzes and exams! (Best way to get ready for midterms)
Dr. Charonnat is an incredibly intelligent professor and very helpful! If youre not understanding something, he takes extra time to help you out. Hes let me stay over his office hour time many times. Not an easy A but very possible! Highly recommend him for OChem
Dr. Charonnat is by far the best professor I have encountered. I was warned about how hard OCHEM is, but with Charonnat, it was not as difficult as people claim it is. His lectures are amazing and he really wants to help his students. Worked really hard and put a lot of time and effort into this class and it really paid off.
He's a good professor and is caring, but he'll keep you over 15 minutes every time and isn't very good at answering questions during class. I like Melikyan more but I think it's easier to get an A in Charonnat's class. For context, I'm not really good at or fond of chemistry, but I did the book problems and his practice tests, and got an A-.
Do not take him. Currently in the class now and he is awful. His problem sets have problems that he doesn't teach. For example, he'll show us two examples of reaction mechanisms that are SO basic, then on his problem sets, he gives us problems we haven't done. He doesn't explain anything and is so quiet as well. No canvas use as well.
Treats this lower div class like we're chem majors. Speaks really quietly. Gets annoyed/gives attitude when you ask questions because he wants to rush through the material. In office hours will tell you to just look at your notes. This is going to be a long semester. Thank god for Youtube.
don't take you wont learn anything. no questions no answers just write down his notes that don't make sense and hope you pass bc youtube doesnt even help at this point buddy
Took 333 with Charonnat for Summer 2020. If you take him in the summer be ready to spend every second studying for 6 weeks. One of the most unfair graders I have ever come across. His tests are extremely hard to the point where it seems like were in grad school. Most of the class did poorly overall. Doesnt seem to care for his students
CHEM333 is already a hard class, and Charonnat does what he can to make it harder. He's an unfair grader and treats students poorly. He does the bare minimum as a professor, yet complains all the time. He obviously doesn't care about his students and doesn't even try to hide it. He also has no time management skills. Avoid.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! I thought I would be fine and I took him regardless of the reviews I saw here (not that I had options), but I just wanted to get it done and be over. I absolutely hated this class! He does not grade any of the homework he assigns until the very end of the semester and deducts stupid points on the exams and quizes.
He made taking o chem so much harder. He is a very tough grader without explanation for what he wants for the discussion problem sets, his tests are more difficult than what we go over and are all free response. His pre-recorded lectures are long and don't explain things well. He's a very intimidating professor.
Dr. Charonnat is pretty funny and very knowledgable. I do however wish that more written feedback was given for the presentations and I didn't like how pretty much the entire grade is based on group presentations.
He is a good Professor that does care though he won't go out of his way to help out unless you ask, he is an engaging Prof, id say take his course if you understand chemistry well, its a doable class if you study well and read chapters before lectures
Dr.Charonnat is the best professor I've ever had throughout my premed years. He makes OCHEM very easy to understand and his practice exams help a lot. If you want to get an A in the class, answer every question he asks, read the book, ask questions, and NEVER copy answers from the solution manual. He prepares you for the MCAT. RECOMMEND IF PREMED
DO NOT TAKE this professor! lecture are very vague, his lecture slides are useless because there is nothing on it but picture no details. when a student asked to give an examples about a topic he says "No, look at the lecture slides" but theres nothing on the lecture slides. in discussion he doesnt give the right answer and tells you to study more.
Not only he sucks at explaining, but his slides only have drawing and no explanation. He only has 3 exams and for the discussion work he judges extremely harsh. He is very condescending when you ask a question. He should retire. The good reviews are probably him writing them so his rate goes up or students who have never taken him cuz he is pretty bad.
Has an unreasonable approach to teaching: teaches with the assumption that his students have encountered the concepts at least 5 times in their lives, when all is new to us. The subject may be manageable, but this professor is simply difficult. Just exhausting to deal with.
As long as you are able to put in the work (which takes quite a lot of time/effort), then you will do just fine.
BORING and not helpful. Do not take him if you want to learn. Most people self taught themselves with the book and youtube. His lectures are an hour waste of time leaving you more confused. If I can say anything is RUN, save your gpa.
Had to teach myself everything in this course. His lecture slides are empty and not informative at all, you have to spend hours reading the book and watching youtube to understand what is going on. Rude and intimidating, and does not put in the time to help you succeed. Lazy, 0 time management skills, you won't know your grade till the last day.
Professor Jeff Charonnat is awesome! Some people might think organic chemistry is easy, but college isn't supposed to be a breeze. This class needs serious study time, but Jeff explains everything nicely if you pay attention. His notes and practice exams are like gold. I would recommend him.
Questions felt like they were discouraged in this class. He would go through his lectures and expect his students to simply understand. When hands were raised, they were ignored. He seemed bothered to have been asked questions at all. He was very unhelpful and is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had.
okay. so organic is hard. that wont change no matter who you take I think Spring 2024 got screwed over since we had 333D with Melikiyan for some reason so the 'review' we got was for the melikiyan's lectures (not dr. c's) so it was almost all irrelevant to our exams. Dr C is a very leniant grader on the FRQ. DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS/WADE PROBLEMS!!!!!
Not good at teaching ochem. You WILL have to learn on your own. I made the mistake of studying last minute for the Final, DONT DO THAT. Study weekly. Very LENIENT grader, gives ALOT OF partial credit, questions = free response. Easy to get A compared to other profs. Not good at answering questions. BUT TAKE HIM LOL
Not a good "teacher". BUT A FANTASTIC GRADER. Gives 10 ec pts. per exam, and A LOT of partial credit. Grade based on 3 exams + discussion. Exams: 5 MCQ, 1 ec Question (10 pts) the rest are free response (reactions on first page of every exam). I would have taken him again if he taught 334. A lot of Self-studying tho :(
Honestly a great professor that really cares about his students and their success. Still need to put in 6 hours of daily studying since its ochem. Can't expect to show up to classes and get an A. Professor Charonnat is a lenient grader too. Study daily, do the textbook problems to make it click, and use all of his past exams as study guides.
No matter how well you are doing with the material, he will challenge you to be one bit better. He NEVER just hands you the answer, but will remind you of how to work through it yourself. Always explains why you'd want to do something one way instead of another. Felt like his main concern was preparing us to be the best chemists we could be.
Professor Charonnat is an amazing professor, especially for CHEM 334! He will often remind you of CHEM 333 concepts that you should know to succeed. Attend lectures and OH (!) as he explains the material in a very understandable manner. He offers extra credit & genuinely cares for his students' success. Try hard & don't be afraid to ask for help!
Tough class, but the generous grading made it manageable. Lectures were lacking, so you'll need to rely on the textbook and resources like Unstuckstudy for study prep. Put in the work and you can get that A.
Take Charonnat. He is a great Ochem professor, and cares about his student's success in the class. Ochem is not an easy class but he makes it manageable with how he grades. He is an awesome person.
Honestly, in my opinion the best ochem professor. His exams are basically his provided practice exams. Show up to lecture, show up to review sessions and you will do well. In my opinion he's better than Melikyan who I took for 334 because he is very lenient with his grading.
He is so bad at explaining things and teaching, he expects everyone to know the material. do not take this professor
Class is going to be hard regardless of the professor chosen if you don't put in the work. Charonnat teaches the concepts relatively well, only critique I have is that his grading/explanations for somethings are relatively vague at times. Anyone complaining is not putting in the work and finding a reason to blame him.
He's so bad at teaching and explaining. He is also judgmental if students ask questions when they don't understand a concept.
do not take if you want to pass
Both the lecture and discussion are not helpful at all, he will give problem sets to work on outside of class, and it's nothing like what we learned in class. He also is not good at explaining and will go off topic. He is also judgmental if a student asks a question because they don't understand a concept.
HE'S AN OLD MAN. He doesn't use canvas and writes his lectures on the board so if you miss class you're screwed. He also makes you do your discussion WS outside of class and you have to turn them in at this office by 9:30am on Wednesday. His tests only have 6 questions, but each question is 30 points and all free response.
his teaching style is not for everybody. ochem is a hard subject, and i felt like he would skim through a lot of the harder topics. his practice exams do not have an answer/reference sheet. moreover, he isn't clear on what he wants from you in discussion and he takes off points for every minor mistake. he does give partial credit on exams, though.
I'm filled with so much dread for this class. Very textbook and lecture heavy, expected to understand reading before coming to class. Exams and quizzes are free response and does give pity points but they are very hard if you don't study. Discussion is a literal nightmare and very stupid. Stay clear if you want to keep a high GPA.
horrible professor, he does not know what he is doing
His class requires a lot of work and effort outside of lecture. Sometimes his questions don't correspond to what he teaches, so rely on tutors and the textbook. He does give partial credit since his exams are free response, but they can be hard if you don't know the material. Review his past exams and quizzes and you'll get an okay grade.
