mr. goldthorpe is a fair teacher. for this class we read high school material, such as Pygmalion, Catcher in the Rye, and some other coming of age stories. he's not a particularly hard grader; he's always willing to help. just make sure to be detailed. i wouldn't mind taking him again.
Great teacher and very helpful when needed. Grades fair. Papers have to have content & details; BSing is not an option. He loves to talk and tries various ways to get the material through to the students. Quizzes on all materials and readings. 2 in-class essays, 2 long and a few short essays.
Dear god stay the hell away. he will drive you INSANE from boredom, his freaky looks, and his annoyingness by the end of the class!
I took Mr. Goldthorpe for English 1B.The class took focus on maturation, and the readings were enjoyable. My only complaint is that he can be somewhat unclear when he assigns essays.YET, he is more than glad to answer any questions, and is extremely helpful. I highly recommend this teacher!
one word WERIDO!
He changed my whole perspective on English, from hating the subject to actually enjoying it. If you put effort in your writing, you will learn a lot from this class. He is extremely helpful if you make the time to see him outside of class.
Class with him was totally worthless. unless you forgot everything you learned in high school english, seek out a better professor.
Well he makes me feel like i am in highschool again. If you dont want to expand your mind then take his class. I feel like this class is pointless...

Have to say that he can get you from boredom into sleepiness. Just do the homework, and you'll be fine, and try paying attention to the class.
He's a good teacher and very helpful. I entered his class knowing nothing about structuring a paper, and I came out learning alot.

His class is like hell!
nobody can understand what his lecturing.Only the smartest of the smart students should take his class

i recommend someone elso over this guy. not too clear on his work and his essay topics were lame.
Every assignment is tied to Gail Sheehy's book passages. Sheehy is OK, but talk about beating a dead horse. Sheehy is just not dynamic enough to use for any real analysis. Just became boring by the end.
fairly okay
He gave us a lot of hw. He is a nice guy, but he is hard in grading.. We had to read a lot and also we had a lot of tests. I got a "B" in his class. Good luck!!
This class is beyond loathesome. It's dull, campy, grading is capricious, and the subject matter is a joke. Relate Gail Sheehy to literary works? I've never wanted to burn a book until I took this class, but Passages is going in the fire. I enjoy writing, but please, give me something interesting to write about! I feel like I am stuck in purgatory.
He's okey. If you want to challenge yourself take him. I mean figure out what he wants from you and what he's trying to say befor he dismiss you take him. Kind of hard grader but I find that as a motivation. Well, if you can't figure out what he wants he's approachable.
He's okay.Gives a lot of homework.He can be unclear at times,but a nice teacher-willing to help.Being in class is a MUST.
Hes a nice guy
Students that want to take the easy way out and want to pass English 93 with a C or above, please do not take him. You are just wasting his time. This man is a fare grader and does not let things slide. He is highly experienced so he knows what to look for. This man is not an easy grader! If u want a good grade then you have to work hard for it!
He is one of the best teachers at city college.he is willing to help you and help you improve. fare grader so if want to really learn and be a better writer and just a fool who wants an easy grade TAKE MR. GOLDTHORPE
Goldthorpe seems to know the english language like the back of his hand. He's very helpful if you go during his office hours. Attendance is mandatory, and hw is a must. Some of the hw doesnt count for much, but it helps for your essays. He grades very fair, and always tries to help you improve. He keeps class interesting, being loud at times. B+
Mr. Goldthorpe may seem intimidating at first but really he is fair teacher. His homework are very helpful to your essays because it usually consists of brainstorming excercise. Always do your homework, show up for class on time, and actually learn something; otherwise, you are just wasting time.
Hes mean and impatient. dont take him.
dont take him if you want an easy A cuz it will be hard for you.He gives you too many assignments and homeworks. Mainly he doesnt focus on english in general. His lessons are always off topic. If your gonna take him be ready with writing lots of diego rivera essays! He loves diego rivera so much! your final grade will be based on your essay on dieg
He is a difficult teacher and as the class progress t is harder to understand what exactly he wants in his essays.
DON'T TAKE HIM. His class is like nonsense. He isn't even consistent. He jumps around too much. TV News then Diego Rivera mural, then something else. He assigns a lot of work. He's always rushing and never has enough time. His essays are lame and I don't even understand his grading system! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! He isn't even organized.
Took him last year. Unclear at times. Tough grader. Essay topics are all over the place. Time consuming frequent HW. Helpful during office hours. Went in not knowing how to write an essay and came out knowing lots of helpful info. Always in a rush. Funny dude. Recommend someone else...
NOPE...do not take this class.academic suicide..boring,makes you stay late sometimes, hard nonsense essays.Didnt learn a thing. rolls his eyes alot.HW everyday.i mean if your into hw everyday then go for it.oh average 3-5 assignments a night and their only worth 1 point. sigh* shoulda took another teacher-_-

He's organized-ish, but he is not clear a lot of the times. The way he sets up the essays will require you to do work in the English 92 Reader (you need this throughout the entire semester) HW load is moderate to quite a bit. Sometimes you get almost nothing from him, but rarely. I've noticed a lot of students don't like him. He's ok if you ask me.
Hes Ok. Not the greatest. The work load is about average. Theres A LOT of reading to do. I did learn a few things from him. But the one thing I DON"T LIKE is that HE IS VERY INCOMPREHENSIBLE! Whenever I ask him a simple question, instead of giving a simple Yes/No answer. You'd end up with a really hard and difficult explanation instead.
He was a good teacher to me. He taught me good reading skills I would recommend him to anyone!
Gives way too much homework and never enough time to actually finish it and understand it. You can only tolerate so much sarcasm from this guy. He seriously gives me the creeps when he stares at me, ew. All in all, I'm only 6 weeks into his class and already can't stand him, unless this would be your only class, I recommend another teacher.
Easy teAcher
Teacher was really helpful. He is most useful during out of class settings. Where he breaks down everything more simple
Teaching style is one of a kind. Learned slot of English terms to apply to my essays. Great help after class hours.
At first I thought this class was going to be boring but, as time passed by I started to see and hear my essays to turn out to be more clear and concise. I'm a 2 gen in my family and probably the first to graduate a college degree in my family. Thank you Mr. Goldthorpe!
Mr. Goldthorpe is an academic teacher. Unlike mire teacher he does more than marks your paper with mistakes. He give examples on how to fix the paper on your essay. Very helpful when you don't know what a English term or a type of writing term is. The work load is fine just touch bases with him if your running less on time.
Very helpful! Got an B and learned many skillful tricks in writing.
Warning. The work load is hard! But you can still turn the work in I you need time or don't get the concept. He is willing to use this lunch time to teach out of class. Very nice teacher!
Makes learning how to read paper easy. Breaks down the process and guilds you through the whole way
Extremely nice! Helps any on that wanted to learn English. If your slacking off he'll ask you what's going on and will try to push you to be come better ad a writer and a person. He cares for most of his students. The only problem in the class is the work load. Each assignment are leading up to the essay and needs to be done to understand the S.A
Has a fast teaching style and you need to be focus all the time. All in all Mr. Goldthorpe is a well known English teacher here in CCSF. Can set up Office time with you if you need help.
Be on time in class he gets srs about you being late. Interesting teacher. No problems other than the work load. But that's expected when he's teacher you to be ready For English 1A
Best English 96 teacher! Hw and assignment are over the up but it's the process of being a better writter. Have a great summer Mr. Goldthorpe
Good professor. Teaches how English is suppose to be taught.
Best English teacher in CCSF. Teaches how to learn English from a noobs point of view.
Work load is high! Don't fall behide the class work or you will fail his class. Got a B+ :)
Sometimes needs to slow down when teaching but teaches the basics of English lit to a point where you can understand.
What can I say about this teacher in a few words. He speaks fast, a lot of homework, very helpful during office hours, essays are a not the usual essay prompts, easy grader and last a teacher that knows when your Falling be hide and tries too much to catch you.
This is my 1st college English Professor in CCSF. At first his teaching style is very direct. Although, I only received a B/B+ in his class I learned a lot of useful tools that i didn't pick up going through middle school and high school. Keep in mind if you have a question I suggest you come up to him personally and speak about your issues.
Keep up with your work and you will earn a passing grade. We did 5 essay in the class and their all related to the next coming essay.
Nice teacher! never had a problem with my assignments. Make sure you aren't absence in class because there will be alot of things that he wont go over in class time. His office hours are the best times to handle these issues.
Greetings, this is my first time coming back from a long school break. So far it's only been the first day of class and already have a feeling I'm going to get a lot out of this. I was never a fan of school but with Jeff is what he wants us to call him. It will be a learning experience for all of us.
Chill dude. First day of class. All relax and informative. Easy to call to and Aldo got added into the class. He seems like a very nice professor *crossfingers*
Full English class always on the first day of class. I love the Internet theme we are going over this semester. Makes the class feel like it's not a English class, but more into the intro to social connects.
He is a good teacher, but he is just too weird! Sometimes he would talk nonsense and yes, he had these weird stares and jump around the class too much! I found him helpful he was always willing to help, but his work load was too much, but you learned! After the semester was over he act like he didn't you when ran accross him! Cold huh!
He's not a teacher i would recommend. His class is pretty easy as long as you keep uo with the work. But his lectures are so boring! He never clarifies what he is trying to say. He is always saying way more than he needs to, and takes forever to get to his point. He also repeats himself and treats his class like highschoolers. Very disappointed..,
His class was too easy for me. I was absent a lot and still got an A. I felt like I was in high school again. Sometimes he treated his students like their stupid. Overall, I didn't really learn anything new and useful from his class.
Chill teacher. Helps you when you need it but if your looking for a exciting class... look elsewhere. Otherwise easy A, if your willing to put the effort.
This teacher is psychologically-incapable of teaching at a national institution. Not only is he messy, he is unstable. He does NOT come to class prepared and a lot of people can attest to this. He likes grilling people thinking it's okay to insult people lower than him. He's also fond of giving sermons to people, which are unrelated to the essay !!
One of the worst teachers in CCSF. Not only is he overly dramatic, he also likes to insult his students especially the minorities. Instead of talking about the subject matter like ESSAYS, GRAMMAR, etc., he likes to talk about out of this world subjects. If you want a straight to the point English class without drama and racism,SKIP HIM and BE HAPPY
great teacher. Learned a lot. very interesting subjects. must attend class. helpful if you ask for help. class participation is encouraged. always willing to help you outside of class. do the work and your grade will reflect it. time management issues. If you want to learn take this class. Learned how to better papers.
He is SO FABULOUSLY FUNNY! hahaha He gets you very interested in the writing and texts and is direct with what he wants for each assigment. He is a fair grader.
Although he may weird you out at times, Goldthorpe is a good and caring teacher. He encourages you go to attend office hours which is to your benefit.
He's a good teacher he looks you in the eye and tells you the truth about art. He tends to bring duck soup to class so be careful he tends to eat in class while teaching. But overall a good teacher :)
I took him over the summer. Worst teacher I ever had. He was always angry and yelling at the class. He clearly did not want to be there. I'm normally an A/B student but this teacher was a bit off. Everyone was scared to ask a question and the book for the paper was hardly used so we could have skipped reading or buy it. Skip this one!
Jeff maybe strict at first, but he is helpful if you let him know about the areas you will need help with. Talk to him after class or see him during office hours. Go see him during office hours as it will be easy for that one on one meetings. The annotation approach is very helpful, it helped me a lot in this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS SERIOUSLY!!!HE IS CONFUSING AND HE DOESNT HAVE TEACHING SKILLS AT ALL HE EXPECTS YOU TO KNOW WHAT HE SAYS HE GRADES HARD I DO NOT RECOMMEND!
he is a very great instructor and he is extremely helpful. You should follow his calendar and complete class assignments.
His class is rather easy, but he loves throwing loads of homework on you and expect that to be your only homework. He also makes you buy books that are required, but you only probably use it a couple of times. And you expects you to know what he's talking about. I personally dislike the days I have to attend his class.
This guy is just awful. He's obnoxious and condescending. I hated his class so much, the only thing that kept me in it is that it was a requirement and it was easy. He makes the most simple tasks seem incredibly complicated and doesn't explain things very well. Get out while you can, take this class with a better professor!!!
He is a very good teacher, and very very helpful. he gives out a lot of homework, but it is worth it. it is very helpful. and he really wants students to learn. He really help students to improve. highly recommended.
Tends to be very eccentric and seems angry during his lectures in class. Tough grader on essays and is very unorganized about the sheer amount of papers and assignments he hands out. Don't take this guy unless you want a horrible time.
I can see why people say Professor G has a so-so rating. Yes, the homework is easy but he gives a lot of it. If you're willing to put forth the effort, and ask for help when needed you'll do fine. He's always willing to help out a student and encourage us to come see him during office hours.
Mr. Goldthorpe reminds me of Robert California from the Office. He does really awkward things without knowing. He doesnt really give you a break down of why he gives you the grades he does on essays. He is very open to helping people, always reminding people of his office hours. Overall I would say if you REALLY need an English 1A class take him.
He was one of the worst teachers at City. He could be so unclear about assignments and he does things awkwardly sometimes. He's a tough grader and he actually counts how many times you come late to the class..... If you want to pass 1A, don't take him.
Mr. Goldthorpe is a really good teacher. He cares in students' learning and motivates them in writing a better essay. Students will learn a lot about art and others interesting topics. I totally recommend his class.
Not the absolute worst but he's striving hard to be. Going to the computer lab is mandatory for a passing grade and it is just the definition of pointless. He made us buy a work packet he published which we never used. He forgot he was an English teacher and just started becoming an art history teacher and made us interpret art. Seriously.
Jeffrey is terribly unclear. He is not consistent in grading. He loses assignments frequently. He is extremely unorganized and perhaps so unhappy that it affects how he treats his students. He is very condescending and impatient. I would never recommend him to anyone, especially those struggling in English or those who love the subject.
He was helpful, but his teaching method makes it hard to stay motivated in the classroom. Otherwise, if you have the motivation and right work ethic, you can pass his class.
I worked so hard and received a C for both classes I wouldn't recommend taking this class
Worst teacher. I came into his office hours telling him I'm going to miss a class and was wondering if I can have the homework/assignment for that day. The next time I went to class, he told the class to turn in their worksheet (he didnt give it to me). After class I told him that he didnt give me that assignment. He blamed me for not telling him..
Mr. Goldthorpe can be a real pain to deal with and frequently nags us if we don't turn in our assignments on time. I get it, he's trying to help us turn in our work but he doesn't have to do it every damn minute and have a long rant about it afterwards. I'm currently taking him and the essays aren't that bad but he will make you do a lot of work.
Goldthorpe always seemed to be irritated by something when he was in class, he always gave homework last minute and wouldnt explain how to do it, the three books that were required for the class we did not used one out of the three the whole semester. I wouldnt recommend this teacher unless you like long lectures.
I wasted my time
Brilliant teacher. His curriculum is rigorous but rightfully so. You can miss work, and STILL GET CREDIT for it, given you turn it in with your folder at the last week of class. Subject matter is hard, but relevant and thought-provoking. If you study hard enough, you will be delighted in this class. If you are behind, visit, or talk to him.
Mr. Goldthorpe is not only teaching how to write. He teaches how to think, because in order to write clearly, one must first be able to use word mediated thinking with success. The reason he is given bad reviews is because most of the students in the class were immature and unable to take his class seriously. He is a superb teacher.
I've since transferred to a UC but thinking about taking his English class is genuinely still a nightmare to me. He sucks at what he does. Dumb criteria, dumb assignments, dumb professor. Unnecessarily difficult for a lower level English class. Don't take him unless you really want unnecessarily long and hard work for lower level english classes.
I enjoyed English 1B with Mr. G. despite the so-so reviews. Although he is a bit scattered at times, he is really passionate about what he teaches. This class pushed me to my limits but I got stronger from it. GET YOUR BOOKS IN ADVANCE. Always bring them, highlight and annotate. Take advantage of all extra credit opps! Go to the English Lab!
He doesn't teach how to write he just talks about topics he likes and tells you to write about them.
Professor Goldthorpe is an amazing teacher! I actually took his Eng 88, but it's not one of the options on this site for some reason. As someone else mentioned here, Mr. Goldthorpe doesn't only teach you how to write, he teaches you how to think. Mr. Goldthorpe is a true gem at CCSF for folks who are eager to learn and use their brain!
Passed his class but I 100% do not recommend you take his class it was extremely difficult for absolutely no reason. He is unclear about a lot of his assignments and for this semester we focused a lot on the history of California including fiction stories about California and whatnot.
I honestly would not recommend this class to anyone. This was the first time it had to be taught online and it was so unorganized and things would be put online on random days. I put a lot of time and effort completing assignments and when I would get my grade back it was so upsetting.
Added assignments after class ended throughout the week & wknd. Unclear grading policy regarding coursework weight and level of priority to be taken for each. Mismanagement of CANVAS online learning portal. He never fixed it after adding another class' assignments or even called IT for help, ever, period. Sent +70 zoom invites over semester.
