was super easy to understand. Just do the homework and study guides and you'll do fine on the test. Very patient too.
he's a great teacher and really wants his students to succeed..very nice and understanding
Really good teacher...i always disliked math until i took his class! he made it really easy to understand and he also gives EXCELLENT notes!
He is such a wonderful teacher, as kind as he is clear. I would recommend him in a heartbeat.
He is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. In high school I was lucky to pass and with him and I get As on all the tests. Notes are given clearly. Attend class, pay attention, do the homework and you will get an A. AWESOME TEACHER!!!!!
NEVER take this class. it is VERY hard to get a good/even decent grade with him. he says he will "bend over backwards for his students" but this is not true at all. there is a ton of HW, the tests are ridiculously hard, and it is painful to go to class everyday. he is so RUDE. this has been one of the worst classes i have ever taken.
He is an awesome teacher; very clear and comprehensible. However, his tests and quizzes are ridiculously hard. Don't expect to get an A.. and be prepared to work hard to get a B
He was nice in the beginning, but it went downhill fast. He is unfair when it comes to tests, a very harsh grader. Since the tests are the worst and hardest of any math i've taken- your grade will suffer because 80% of your grade is based on these impossible tests. DO NOT take this class if you want a good grade (which you should since its 4units)
This was the worst class I have ever experienced. It is extremely hard to learn the material when your teacher makes you feel bad for asking questions and puts you down for not understanding. If you have trouble with math and rely on a good teacher, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! He wants you to fail and could care less about you.
He was an excellent teacher. I also went to the mathlab for minor questions, but pretty much understood everything..he was pretty clear and extremely helpful definitely recommend taken him for math 107... :)
He is very knowledgeable of math he sometimes claims he is a prodigy, which seens to be true, but writes hundred numbers per minute hard to follow and has not patience. He does not seem to help if need motivation for math.
Jeff is the best math teacher i have ever had. I absolutely hated math before taking his class and always struggled with it. He is extremely helpful and NEVER makes you feel stupid for asking a question. I would recommend his class to everyone. He is also a firm believer in partial credit on quizzes and tests which really helps out your grade!!
Jeff is an awesome teacher. He explains things very clearly and always asks the class how they prefer the info to be relayed. He is always available for help in the math lab and is happy to see students do well. Stats isnt the easiest but if you try and work with him you can do very well.
Jeff is an amazing teacher!! He explains things so well and he actually cares about his students. he makes math make sense to me which is the first time since 5th grade.. i took his 100 class and his 107 class and both were put together the same. HINT: DO THE HOMEWORK!! the quizzes hve problems straight from the hw and it even says the problem num
This class was very hard for me. Stats in general was a new language and i never really learned it. If you take this class you MUST go every class because there is a quiz EVERY class. Make sure you do your homework because the quizes are straight from the hw and study study study for the test even though you get a page of notes!
he was not my best teacher....he goes through the lessons wayyy too quickly and when you ask questions he laughs at you makes makes you feel really stupid. oh and if you are dumb enough to take his class....DO NOT SIT IN THE BACK THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS! he does a terrible memory game...trust me
Tests & quizzes are very hard to pass. He is a harsh grader, takes off points for every little mistake. He likes to add problems on the quizzes that we never went over in class because he wants us to learn something new while taking the quizzes.
Good teacher!
Don't take this class if you want an easy pass. His quizes are really hard and they are worth more than the test and final. He is doesn't manage his time well in class. If you want a good grade in this class either be a genus or be prepared to put in a lot of extra effort. Out of 41 students in the begging he only passed 7.
not a good teacher and could care less about students, no matter how hard you try in the end it won't matter. if you want a teacher who does'nt make you feel stupid then dont take his class. just because he is good at math does not understand when others are not. horrible experience all the way around, and he goes WAY TOO FAST!
Jeff helped me conquer my fear of math! Take him!! He may seem intimidating at first, but he is truly an excellent teacher. DO YOUR HOMEWORK and you will pass. He puts in the extra hours before and after class to help you succeed :)
Professor Gray is extremely knowledgeable in MATH and an excellent teacher. The class was very challenging - summer session usually is. If you are willing to work hard, you will reap the rewards. He is willing to help you understand even if your learning style is not similar to his. What is life without a challenge?
His quizes are very hard. Over all hes an ok math teacher. Hes a nice guy but he likes to challenge you with very hard math problems.
THE. WORST. TEACHER. I'VE. EVER. HAD. Jeff Gray is incomprehensible on the rare occasions he does try to 'teach' some math. He cares not at all for his students or their success. He is only there to collect a paycheck. Also, his office hours are virtually non-existent. TERRIBLE.
Super nice guy and is willing to help whenever. If you show that you are focused and trying he will do anything to help you understand. Met me at UCSB library b/c I lived in IV to tutor me for finals. Pay attention and you'll get a good grade!
If you are interested in learning a lot -Jeff's the teacher for you. But don't expect it to be easy, because he will challenge you. So if you don't bother coming to class, don't take him. Even though his tests are challenging, he is not a bad guy. If you show him that you're working hard, he'll help you get a good grade and you will learn a lot!!
Jeff is the best math teacher I have ever had. He challenge you a lot with difficult problems, but he does care for his students who are willing to learn. I worked hard and I have learned extremely much this semester. I feel well prepared for next semester. All thanks to Jeff. I will register for his statistics class for sure!!
this class was ok but he didnt use the text book so he makes you buy a 150.00 dollar book for the aleks program. then on the tests an quizes he puts material on there that he never goes over nor do you do on the homework an expects you to know it. and he never updates your grade so you never know what your overall grade is
Jeff is a very hardcore, difficult teacher. He's also extremely accessible, helpful, and wants you to do well. Don't take this class if you want an easy A - but if you really want to LEARN, he's one of the best in the department. He can be intimidating because he's very intelligent, but he DOES want to help you, so just ask.
go to the math lab!
Great guy, wants you to succeed but will challenge you. Make sure to be on top of ALEKS and his lectures and you will do above average.
Horrible teacher!! He skips around and does not explain math throughly or clearly.
Do NOT take this teacher. Very nice guy but he does not know how to teach. He taught material I already knew and still was able to confuse me. Quizzes are problems he never went over in class. Stay away
One of the worst Math teachers I have ever had! Didn't explain the material at all, rushed through lessons, and I learned more from the tutor than from him. I dropped the class in time, you should too, or opt for a better teacher that will actually explain something. If you are planning on taking him, good luck, you'll need it.
I really hate to give a negative review, but this professor was the worst math teacher I have ever had. Sure, he tries to be friendly (he's very awkward) but that can't help you get through the class. Even doing the homework and seeing a tutor I had a hard time. He's just not a great teacher. Smart, but not a teacher. His lectures are too fast.
Mr. Gray was the worst math teacher I have ever had at SBCC, and I have had several horrible teachers. The lectures are taught in 5 minutes and he leaves it up to you to teach yourself everything. The material is hard, but he is horrible at explaining anything. Beware- the tests and quizzes have nothing to do with lecture notes. Save yourself.
This is the hardest teacher ever! Math 131 with him is insane. What you learn in class is never on the exams it's all way harder. Take him if you want but better be ready for a hard teacher. He doesn't have cumulative exams which is nice !
If he doesn't finish material in a lecture, he won't finish that material next lecture, or at all. Take home quizzes are stupid hard, even Math 200 tutors don't know how to help you. He says exams are easy, but they're not. Nice guy, but definitely would NOT recommend his class.
You have to be comfortable asking for help. He lives in the Math Lab so you can always ask him for help even for his really tough Take-Home Quizzes. Gives enough extra credit for you to get a good grade, but you have to work for it. Homework not required but it really helps if you do all of it. Tough but a great college level math class.
Jeff is a really good teacher. The in-class worksheets are so helpful. He goes out of his way to make sure that students understand the material and you can always find him in the Maths Lab. Tests are challenging, quizzes can be ungodly sometimes, and you definitely have to put in the effort, but you finish the class with a mastery of the topics.
Absolutely the WORST math teacher at CC. Too bad he is the only teacher that teaches 131. He is very unclear with his lectures, gives ridiculously hard quizzes that no one at the math lab can help with, his tests consist of 6 or 7 problems so if you miss one you get a C or lower and he makes you feel dumb when you ask him a question. DON'T TAKE!
He is very hard and a very hard grader not a bad guy though. Very confusing on what constitutes cheating for quiz's because they are take home and you can work with people but if anything is too similar you will receive a zero.
Jeffrey is a good mathematician. If you are or if you want the deepest understanding of Trig, this could be the class for you. If you're trying to get a good transfer GPA or just move on to Calculus, avoid this class. He gives hard tests, and harder take-home quizzes. Your grade will suffer. We had many fails and drops.
Jeff is an amazing teacher that teaches you math and not formulas. Math can be intimidating sometimes, but he truly teaches you how to comprehend concepts and apply them wisely. I would take him in every math course if it was possible. It's a challenging class, not hard.
Jeff is a great guy who cares about his students and really cares about the subjects he teaches!
Jeff is without a doubt the best math professor I have ever had. He inspires students to want to become independent and motivated learners, so if you're lazy you probably won't like that. Math is a difficult subject regardless, but Jeff has great handouts and lectures that make it more approachable. TOUGH group quizzes that are take home avg hw.
Gray is definitely a character, I thoroughly am entertained by his style of clothing and just his personality. Get ready for group assignments: presentations, quizzes. I think he might stop assigning group presentations after he realized that they sucked. His tests are very difficult, you would have to do tons of studying. DO THE HOMEWORK
Jeff is a great teacher. He really takes the time to listen to your questions and answer them so you understand. He's funny. Group assignments every week. Lots of office hours to make sure you get the help you need. Grading is very easy and he gives partial credit for answers instead of making the whole thing wrong. Easy going and informational.
First and foremost, HE'S HARD! This is a very tough course. The take-home quizzes are the most difficult assignments. The exams are kind of tough too! However, he's a great professor and extremely smart! He will definitely challenge you to be a better student and use your brain. Pray you get smart students in your group. Studying is mandatory...
What a guy. His personality is funny in a nerdy way and he is extremely smart. Sometimes he has difficulties explaining concepts to the class but he is very approachable and is always in the math lab if you need help. His class is a challenge and he definitely makes you work for your grade but it is not unreasonablely difficult .
Quizzes are challenging but not as challenging as most claim and are extremely enlightening. Pay attention to his lecture and try to grasp a conceptual mathematical mindset and you will barely have to study. Just do the quizzes (don't just ask the tutors to answer them) and do the homework you'll be good.
One of the worst teachers I have taken. He tried a technique with my class called a "flipped classroom" where he only lectures 5 minutes a day and expects us to learn the information on our own. He's very lazy and is known for teaching classes in different ways. Avoid taking this teacher. More than 8 people dropped the class during summer.
Im not sure about lower level courses but in his 210 class he did not lecture and expected us all to learn from the book. If youre that type of learner it could be good, but for the most part he was not very helpful.
Jeff cares a lot about his students but it seems like he doesn't. He gives you all the information you will need but expects you to put forth the effort to make sense of it he is more than willing to help you but requires your effort as well. He gives a lot of group projects and homework but it all really does help.
Jeff has a unique style of teaching that most students aren't used to. He makes you learn the material by yourself rather than teaching it in class. However, if you still need help understanding the material even after doing the homework he assigned, he'll help you out. Quizzes and exams might seem a bit hard, but they are doable if you do the hw.
Jeff in a nutshell, is garbage of cc professors and is probably the bottom of the barrel when it comes to math teachers at city college, he thinks everything is so easy and compares moderate math classes to his calc 2 classes. Avoid him, he loves to assign internet hw so he doesn't have to grade anything, very lazy professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He makes his students feel dumb, and teaches nothing. He will skip steps when teaching, and if someone asks where/how he got a number, he will answer as if you are dumb. He then gets mad at the class for not asking questions. He takes forever to put things in the grade book, and compares his algebra students to his calc students.
He doesn't seem to care about any of his students. He skips steps & when you ask him questions about how he got to that step, or got that answer he will make you feel stupid as if you should've already known what you were asking & what he did. He belittles his students and compares everyone to his calc students. I high advise AGAINST taking him.
AWFUL! He does not teach well, goes super fast, and looks at you like you're stupid if you ask a question. He doesn't explain or prepare for tests at all. The online txtbook makes it hard too.
I am a straight A student but am struggling to pass his class. My class went from 35 kids to barely 6 that even show up. The tests are hard, he doesnt put grades in the grade book, and treats his students like they are idiots. I skip his class and go to the math lab to learn the material he is teaching. Easy material but he makes it hard.
Jeff is a really smart and nice guy but is poor communicating concepts or keeping the class interested. He also assigns an intense amount of homework out of a terrible textbook. It would take me 3 hours just to copy the answers. He also gives absurd computer assignments that aren't clear with directions. The tests are super hard. Don't take him.
Great teacher. Wants his students to really understand the material. Goes beyond basic explanations. Often in math lab to offer extra help. MATH 131 is, however, a really hard class.
Lots of HW! Not just only paper work, but also computer hw.
A lot of homework and go through the material very fast. Students needs to do written homework and computer assignment. I am staying at the math lab almost everyday but still can't get full credit in his class.
I wasn't a big fan of him. Definitely do not recommend. He gives ridiculously hard "take home quizzes", near impossible and he even admitted that they were near impossible. So much effort and time, it wasn't worth it for me.
I recommend Gray for stats. My class was well organized and nicely paced. He hands out packets for each chapter that replace the need to read that headache of an openstax book. He seems to genuinely enjoy teaching- that's always good!- and aims to keep the material light. But hey it's always going to suck.
He gives literally impossible take home quizzes. They are so irrelevant and a complete waste of time. If you take this class, you will LIVE in the math lab. NOT WORTH IT. Do yourself a favor and do not take his class. Not to sound too over dramatic but I cried the second day of school because I hated this class so much. I withdrew, it's impossible.
I think that Jeff knows his stuff, but I dont think that he knows how to communicate it effectively. I took this class during summer 2, which is Jeffs first time teaching stats during the summer, and I was quickly stressed out by how his tests were formatted. Specifically, the second test he gave us was completely unfair.
Lets just say, I have taken many math classes and they have all been very easy for me. I have always done very well in math until I took stats 117 w/ this prof. Do not take this class, I tried asking questions to better my understanding of the material and he makes you feel so bad for not knowing. Stay away from this class.
I studied a lot for my exams but still got Cs. He is not clear and does not care about students. If you ask him a question he makes it more confusing. He expects you to know a lot but doesnt have time to teach everything. Do not take his class otherwise you will suffer.
Honestly the negative reviews pretty much sum up my experience with this teacher. Has a passion for math, but hes probably the worst math teacher Ive ever had. I was nervous that i was the only one who thought this but Ive talked to students and it seems like the majority think the same. Truthfully im disappointed in this teacher.
The first couple weeks of the class I probably had 3 or 4 meltdowns and lived in the Math lab, but I think once I was able to get the hang of things the class wasn't as bad as everyone says it is. Don't get me wrong Gray is a SUPER hard teacher and can sometimes, I mean almost all the time belittle his students, but the class is doable... (cont.)
Professor Gray is good teacher for upper level math. I imagine his teaching style wouldn't fit well with statistics because most people taking stats don't care to learn about math and are taking it because it's a requirement. Professor Gray is passionate, well spoken and knows his stuff. Hate him or love him, but you can't disrespect him.
I took a lower-level math class because thats what I was placed in and to his lower-level math classes he is one of the rudest teachers I have ever have. He belittles his students and expects us to know things that we don't. I heard he is good for his harder math classes, but I advise to NOT take him.
This is my first year in college and out of all of my professors, he makes you feel stupid for not knowing how to do the math. You ask for help and he makes a facial expression that says it all and tells you to look at your notes. The notes are not clear or helpful. His homework is so ridiculous. Take this class only if you want to fail and suffer
He makes you feel stupid when you ask for help he just stares at you and says did you pay attention he is also weird because durning lecture he starts talking to himself saying what he is gonna eat at home overall take his class you want to fail
He just doesnt teach math I know he is really smart but the problem is he goes way to fast on his lectures and he starts mumbling random stuff
Gray is probably the worst professor I've had at SBCC. He makes big note packets but they don't include most equations and he doesn't teach the material well. Mumbles a lot and goes off on irrelevant tangents. Homework is hard and differs from what he teaches, but doing the quizzes with group members helps. a lot of people Failed
I loved this professor but he does kinda make you feel stupid when you ask some questions. He doesn't mean to and I'm not sure if he's aware of this, but if you can get over that, he's a great teacher and he really wants to make sure you understand calculus. Super organized lectures. As long as you take notes(!!!) and do the homework, you'll do ok
Professor Gray is a really good teacher! You need to attend lectures, and also it's really helpful to go to his office hours! He gives you homework every day, but it's great because you're studying the material which is gonna help for the tests. Tests aren't that hard tho if you study and prepare for them. I recommend him for calculus!
I took Math 131 class during Sp19, and I just want to say 'thank you'. MATH 131 is very tough, because the MATH 130 at SBCC do not prepare most students for it. But as a Berkeley student, every class here is like this, or harder. This class will give you a sense of what your classes will be like after you transferred. Grind for it!
I am taking Linear algebra over the summer. For a 6 week class it feels super stressful, but it's still doable. Jeff is a chill guy who clearly knows his stuff. He expects you to do the work outside of class to understand the material. I wish I would have taken this class over a full semester, 6 weeks is way too intense for this much material.
I enjoyed Jeff's stats class. I truly don't think it's fair how many bad reviews he has. A lot of my classmates in Spring were just there for the requirement and would get annoyed by having to put in real work. Jeff cares about his students and makes that clear. Maybe if you poor reviewers bothered to show up at his office hours you'd know that. ;)
The grading is very tough and he's very slow about it, most class time is spent in silence taking quizzes or breakout rooms not really learning anything. I've been in his linear class for half a summer session and it's very hard to know what points are missing and what's just not graded and when he will ever get it back to you.
If i could give one HUGE piece of advice to Jeff, it would be please have the first hour of class that we spend on challenge sheets in silence not really learning anything repurposed for working on proofs, which are insanely hard to get corrections on before their due date. This way we could fix them before they're due.
I really like professor Gray's teaching style. I think his grading system is really good; it gives you a lot of chances to come back from a rough start. He has office hours every week day and is super helpful in them. He grades pretty tough but you do well if you really work hard and know your stuff. Best math teacher I've had so far.
I think prof. Gray is a great teacher. I think he has high expectations for his students and most students aren't used to his methods. You need to put in the work and take responsibility for your own grade - nothing is handed to you. Take this class if you want to be treated like an adult. Don't take this class if you aren't ready to work for it.
Jeff is rad. Lin Alg is not lecture heavy with him - expect to put in the work to learn a lot on your own. However, he is there and ready to help at any time. Super flexible, super nice, very funny guy. Wish I could take more classes with him. Not really sure why people have rated him so badly on here... if you put in the work you will succeed.
I thought his class was pretty well set up for success. He hasnt been posting the answers to homework, or quizzes so i can' go back and figure out things i' not understanding without a lot of extra work. Great teacher and very understanding plus he simplifies things well.I wish he would keep up on grading so i know if am understanding the material.
Professor Gray is the worst professor EVER! Not only is he SUPER slow to grade homework and tests, he is the hardest grader you will ever find. He spends his classes putting you in breakout rules and then teaching criteria he will never test you on. His notes are long packets and poorly made. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! He also never replies to email
Doesn't grade on time, homework is messy and keys are overcomplicated, lectures are hours of rambling. Stats is confusing as it is, do yourself a favor and find a different teacher.
Im currently on track to getting my PHD. I wouldn't have been able to transfer if I had not passed math117. I went to math lab and struggled daily with problems. Professor Gray worked with me and I passed the class. I am forever grateful for the compassion this man showed me, one of the most genuine human beings you will ever meet.
