He is a good teacher, and does well at explaining concepts in class. He is funny, and it will keep you awake, but it can be a bit much sometimes. He picks great TA's though, and provides a lot of ways to get help. I just wish he would answer more questions in lecture, he just tries to get thru the material. Overall good teacher, I recommend him
He is a great teacher. He does a wonderful job of breaking down subjects so you can understand them. His craziness can be funny, but can also get annoying. He does tons of demos during class cause he really wants you to learn. Study a lot for the tests cause they are HARD!
He is an excellent professor but this is not an easy class. He loves his job and is willing to do what he needs for you to get the grade you want.
He is the best teacher i've ever had!! This man's genius~ He really want to help us and try so hard to inspire us. Great lecture~ he's very funny too ^^ take it from him!! but do study coz it's not an easy class~
Dr. Macedone is the man! His lectures are always entertaining. You can choose 1 of 3 grading plans. Not everything he covers in lecture is what we need to know for the test and he could use the time more effectively. His tests are also pretty tough but I guess it's the same in any chemistry class. Great teacher! Highly Recommended!
Very clear in lecture. But really doesn't want to take any student suggestions. He even acted like he really wanted to know what students had said in the past about his class and what things he could improve, but as the class progressed, anyone could see he didn't want to answer questions or take suggestions. Impatient with students.
I got an A in the class, but not because Macedone did his job. It felt like a comedy show more than anything. I had to figure things out on my own. Not too helpful or nice when I came in to the office either. Several of my friends felt the same way. Tests are challenging but fair overall. I have a bad taste in my mouth for GenChem because of him.
Disrespectful, rude, and elitist. I am sure he created a lot of these "good" ratings just to compensate for the enemies he has made throughout the semester, which easily show here. I visited in him office and he completely degraded me and made me feel like trash. Unprofessional and disappointing. Very elitist.
Guessing by the comments of 106 maybe he's not so great at lower division teaching in a big classroom but he was a great prof. for 223, he really tried to keep our interest and the class was so useful. It was a little hard to guess how the tests were going to be but he was pretty fair and the reviews he did in class were a good reflection of exams.
Seems easy to understand in lecture, but the questions on the tests are almost unrelated. There is critical thinking, and then there is lunacy. Great professor, horrible test writer.
DO NOT TAKE FROM HIM! If you want a stand up routine each class, then go, but talks down to students and says he cares, but really doesn't.
Prof Macedone is awesome! Any chemistry class will be challenging, but Professor Macedone does a really great job helping us to understand the concepts! He's a great guy and really cares about us!
From attending lecture, this class seems fun and friendly. The tests, however, test us on obscure points or special cases that are much more complicated than the fundamentals we learn in class. The professor is unwilling to entertain the idea that perhaps his tests are too hard. Whatever the score, the students are always in the wrong.
His tests are super hard. Teaches the bare minimum, then tests on applications and examples that are more more advanced than he taught. Tries way to hard to be funny rather than just instruct. If you ask a question he doesn't like, he makes you feel like an idiot. I would recommend taking this from someone else, horrible chemistry experience.
Great lecturer--many actual funny moments. His tests? Barbaric! Be prepared to work your hardest for a B+. It's all about learning basic concepts and testing as hard as possible from that. Plan AT LEAST 3 hours in the testing center. I would've rather taken another teacher (and I've been content with every other teacher I've had this year.)
Macedone isn't as bad as people make him sound. His tests ARE difficult, but I scored more than 90% on all of them because I studied and did the homework. I'm anticipating an A for the class. The people who are angry didn't like having to work hard for a good grade. I found Macedone a little unprofessional at times, but this wasn't a bad class.
Good guy and good lecturer. However, he tests you on things that are harder than what is taught. He knows this and feel it is ok and you should magically know how to do problems that are much harder than what you went over in class. Liked everything but the tests, which are the biggest chunk of the grade. Not as good as my Chem 105 teacher.
I signed up for this class because everyone said they loved Dr. Macedone. He tries way too hard to make class funny and treats the students like they are in middle school. So everyone gets distracted by how "funny" he is and forgets about how hard the tests are. Everyone is laughing while all their grades are going down the tubes.
I agree with most comments I've read so far. He tests WAY too hard and in depth. When 90% of the students get a specific question wrong he takes pride in his success of making a hard test. If all you care about is being entertained in class then this guy is great but if you actually care about getting a good grade or learn chemistry DONT take it.
Macedone is an ok teacher, but he focuses too much on entertaining students. But his tests are completely impossible-they ask for detailed answers on obscure topics, are completely free response, & the questions are WAY harder than practice problems done in class. In short, while you may get a laugh or two in lecture, Macedone is a GPA killer.
Awful. Worst teacher. His tests are designed to promote not studying for there is no way to prepare for his tests. He awards arbitrary points which kills half the class. Please get this guy out of BYU
Though he is an eloquent speaker and puts on flashy presentations, I have never found a teacher so disconnected and unwilling to listen to the students. If you go to his office he will make a joke out of you and eventually will personally attack you. Dr. Macedone only cares about his class GPA, not the learning or his students' feelings.
Wow. Some of the best teachers I have had in my life have explained that their purpose as teachers is to help their students know as much as they do,and inspire them to learn more. Macedone only prides himself in one upping his students and proving he is "smarter" (in the most sarcastic sense possible) than them. DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS!!!
I love chemistry, but after taking chem 106 from Macedone I dislike chemistry. This class is a joke and I've never gotten such a low grade before! He doesn't care about his students and he sends all of us to the TAs for his own illogical mistakes. I don't like smartwork either!
Great professor. Lectures are awesome, I actually looked forward to going to class! TA's are necessary - use them. Dr. M also has tons of office hrs though, so use them too! Don't let him intimidate or demean you. He just has a different sense of humor but he really does want to help and is actually quite personable. It IS possible to get do well!
I loved his class. I see him as one of the greatest teachers ever. He did exciting things in class that helped you remember what we went over in class. He also did a good job of applying chemistry to daily life. When I went to ask him for help he asked me questions which got me to think about it myself and be better prepared for tests.
Liked the professor a lot! Great guy hard class though. I think he is a great teacher for how difficult the class is. Best of luck!
Macedone is a great professor who cares about each of his students. This is a tough class, so the easiness rating is not really a reflection of his ability to teach. I didn't study as much as I could have, but I still studied a fair amount and found every test to be very difficult, so he is a tough tester. All in all, I would recommend him.
Not sure why people say he doesn't care about his students. He's energetic, funny, and maybe a bit sarcastic, but he's the NICEST and most helpful professor ever. He's probably the best professor I've had in three years at BYU. His classes ARE hard though, especially the tests--so study a ton and don't get behind, and ask for help often.
His lectures are fun and somewhat interesting, but his tests are of the devil.
I actually really liked this class. If you want a class you'll love going to and will stay interested in, take it from Macedone. Do the homework and reading and go to the TA recitations to stay aflot! Every test seems like an AP test but he gives you the resources to prepare. But seriously Chemistry is hard.
Chemistry is hard! I thought I hated chemistry until this class, he makes it super interesting and fun and I loved class. But it's really hard. Each test is like an AP test! He is a great teacher though, it's just the material that's hard so give him a break
Dr. Macedone is a really good teacher. He makes lecture's very interesting with awesome visuals. His tests are the hardest tests I have taken in my entire LIFE! As long as you read before class and form a study group with multiple people you should be fine. Chemistry is hard normally, but his tests are ridiculously hard. SO HARD!
As many others have said his tests are the worst. He teaches basic concepts and then tests you on very hard conceptual questions. The only way to get a good grade is to put in at least 9 hours a week of dedicated study outside of class. Your only hope is a good TA and LOTS of free time doing practice problems out of the book etc.
Dr. Macedone is a great lecturer. He does the best demonstrations and keeps class interesting. However, his tests are nearly impossible which makes this class more difficult than it needs to be.
Dr. Macedone is an incredible professor! I don't really like Chem that much, but he made it interesting. Tests were hard, but satisfying when you get a good grade after studying. He is totally dedicated to his students, always hears everyone out. I added the class on the add/drop deadline and he totally worked with me to get me caught up! Great guy
His lectures were easy to understand and he is a nice and interesting teacher, but who knows where the tests came from. They were far more difficult than the material covered in class. Unless you can easily understand tests composed of hard chemistry story word problems, you'll be retaking the class to get a better grade.
Dr. Macedone is very funny and intelligent. Lectures are great. Mastering Chemistry homework was helpful, however tests were very hard. Go over practice problems more than concepts. I did very well on the final, better than any other tests, but I still received a B- in the class. He doesn't plan on curving tests so study hard!
Dr. Macedone was an amazing professor. He made class funny and worth going to. I didn't read the textbook at all but I did do all of the homework and went to almost all of the recitation times with the TA. With all of that I thought the exams were not that difficult. He prepares you for them by giving you practice problems. Do them!
Macedone puts on a good show for the class; however, when it comes time for exams you are left wondering why he didn't teach the concepts and only blew up balloons. He is not helpful during office hours and demeans many students. It was a very hard class and the tests were ridiculous.
I got by without studying for a test until the 4th which i did bad on but other than that the class was easy. Lectures were boring but the recitations were great with the TA.
Dr. Macedone seems great in lecture, but everyone else is correct. The tests are much more difficult than they need to be for an intro chem course. No curve, and the average in my section ended up a C-. I recommend switching to a professor with easier exams and some mercy when it comes to grading.
He has interesting demonstrations in class. Tests are INCREDIBLY hard and take hours. Although he is a really cool and enthusiastic person, it may not be worth it to take this class since it was so difficult. Requires hours of studying each day.
I don't know why people are conplaining so much about him. His class is fun and not hard AS LONG AS YOU DO YOUR READING. If you do your part, it should not be that bad. I agree the test average was low, I still got A's for all of them. he is a really guy.
Dr. Macedone makes Chemistry fun and interesting. His tests are hard and he doesn't curve them but he almost always curves everyone's grade at the end. Not an easy A, you have to work for it and do your reading. Great professor though. Sincerely wants to help students.
Great teacher who cares about the learning of the students. The tests are exponentially harder than the homework assigned, so you have to work hard to prepare yourself by working the book problems, and even then you will most likely get surprised on the test.
Hard Class, Awesome Professor. I heard a lot of crap about him before I took his class but he's actually a great guy. Lectures are interesting, even though I'm not a big fan of chemistry. He's a funny guy. You definitely have to keep up with the reading and homework, but if you stay on track, you'll be fine. If you're willing to work, choose him.
Great guy and fun lectures. Tests were beasts though. Need to know your math to be able to do the calculations. I didn't do so hot in his course but I feel that was my bad.
Macedone is awesome. Seriously, the tests are not as bad as everyone says, very reasonable and doable, just know your stuff. Judging by reviews, looks like he may have had one bad semester a while back, but from what I see he has work everything out. Take Chem from him, you won't regret it.
Awesome professor and does care about his students. Tests were difficult because they were not similar to homework and usually applied many different concepts in one problem. If you are willing to work and good at problem solving I would recommend this professor.
This Guy is the Absolute Best Chem teacher I have ever had! When I was in high school I hated every second of my chemistry class, but doctor Macedone made every class exciting. some complain about the test, but i don't think they worked very hard on the homework because that always prepared me well. It was a challenging but it is college chemistry
This guy is the man. Lectures were great! People who complained about the tests weren't using the resources they had because homework and lecture slides prepared me well. Its true that test questions weren't necessarily identical to homework problems..but seriously, were you expecting them to be? The point is, take Macedone, stop thinking about it!
Entertaining teacher at times-tests are brutal. If I could go back, I would have taken it from a different teacher. The final is multiple choice (previous tests are written) and it's a pretty dang tough test. I heard for the majority of people it dropped their grade by up to 10% and the curve in the end of class was less than a percent.
This guy only cares about a perfect grade distribution, and he makes his tests so difficult (a two-part written and multiple choice exam) that you are pretty much competing with every one else. I had to retake this stupid class after I got a C- and the second time around I did no studying at all, learned more, and got a B+. TAKE FROM ANYONE ELSE
I had very mixed feelings. Good lecturer, but tests are unreasonably difficult. I averaged 4.5 hours per test and got 80s. The final was actually my best grade. Final overall grade was an A-, but the .15% curve was almost insulting. Chem 105 was easy for me, this class was not. Take Linford if you care about your grade.
Hardest thing about the class is the time commitment. The material is essentially a review from 105/106. Macedone does a great job holding your interest and explaining things. All test questions are based on his necessary skills list- study those and you'll do great. Lab portion is fun if you have a good attitude, otherwise it can suck.
Macedone is a really great teacher. The reason his tests aren't easy is because they require you to have actually put some effort into learning the material. So you have to decide whether you came to college to get easy A's, or to put in the effort and learn something. If you want to learn, take Macedone. Do the work and your grade will be fine.
I was nervous about Chem 223, but Dr. Macedone made it very manageable. The material was challenging at times, but he worked hard to make sure you understood the concepts. Labs were long but we did some pretty cool things in there. Dr. Macedone is super helpful!
Bottom line = take from someone else. He has entertaining lectures where he blows stuff up, but then glosses over important concepts. Very little homework assigned that doesn't prepare you very well for the 3+ hour tests. The curve at the end was .15% what he cares about is the class average more than learning.
Dr. Macedone is one of the best professors I've had at BYU. He really cares about the material as well as his students. He lets you know when his office hours are and tells you to come often and he means it. If you ever get a chance to meet with you personally you will see how caring he is. His tests are long and hard but they are fair.
He is an entertainer. I was hardly ever bored in class. That being said, he is horrible teacher. Doesn't prepare you for exams. And if you ask for help with anything he pretty much tells you to get lost.
This was a difficult class, but Professor Macedone is the BEST teacher I have ever had. He is passionate about the subject, and he legitimately cares about his students. He is kind and approachable. His tests are difficult, but if you study, you can do well.
Dr. Macedone is a very nice man, but his tests are ridiculously hard, all free response and take around 3-4 hours to take. He makes this class way harder than it has to be, and didn't prepare us at all for exams. I could easily do labs and found the tests unrelated. Also, he promised the whole semester to curve the class and didn't at the end.
Good experience. I feel can be a better lab person after taking this. 6 hrs a week in lab kis crazy.
Interesting, ton of work, decent class.
I studied for 15 hours on his first test. & did terrible. His questions are very ambiguous & are hard to understand. He doesn't answer some peoples questions and instead basically tell you to figure it out yourself. Is pretty crazy/bouncing off the walls sometimes that it is hard to concentrate. Very disappointed. Was told he was good
I went to his office for help which saved me on the first exam. He helped me out without making me feel stupid. approachable too.
He not only teaches but also helps you learn to care about the subject. He is willing & WANTS to help every one of his students. He is so approachable!! He has a reputation for hard tests but newsflash, chemistry is HARD. His averages are the same as everyone else's and his tests are no harder than any other chem test I've taken. LOVE Dr. Macedone!
Always save my comments until the last day of class. Good class overall, needs more explosions tho
Macedone is an incredibly lecturer. I learned so much by just attending class. He is helpful and nice. Everyone says his tests are super hard but I compared them to other teachers's tests and found them not only reasonable but he also prepares you really well by giving you practice tests. Don't be scared, you will love the class, just work hard!
Dr. Macedone is very underrated. I would recommend taking Chem 106 from him to anyone. Amazing lecturer with a passion for the subject that's just contagious.
Agree with the last person. I actually liked it and use the necessary skills list. Explosions were cool.
Dr. Macedone was and excellent professor and probably my favorite so far. He was extremely accommodating and friendly. While I didn't get the grade that I would have liked, I do not at all attribute that to anything Dr. Macedone did. He is probably the best teacher I have ever had and I would recommend him to anyone in a heartbeat.
He is my favorite Chem Professor ever. Probably my favorite professor ever period. His homework prepares you for the tests, and I learned so much more than in other chem classes. TAKE FROM HIM YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!!
Macedone is a great teacher and I really loved his class. I wish I had studied more so I could've done better but there is plenty of ways to get help if you need it.
Macedone is the man! Love this dude. He really cares about his students and wants all of them to do well. I strongly encourage everyone to go to him during his office hours for additional help. I'm sad others didn't have a positive experience in some of his classes...but he is still one of the best lecturers/communicators I've ever met.
Unless you enjoy taking 13 exams with no curves, Don't take him. Excellent professor and devoted to his students but doesn't realize that students have other classes. Extremely time consuming and difficult.
Nice guy and helpful.
Macedone was AMAZING!! By far the best professor I have ever had! You have to put in a good amount of work because you will have a lot of tests. He drops a couple though, so don't stress. Homework and class attendance count for a lot(it raised my grade 8%). Definitely take from him! He is super excited about the subject and it is infectious.
He is a very talented professor no doubt. However, I found the grading to be a bit unfair. He is really helpful and approachable, but his tests are almost impossibly hard. They are the kind of tests where you study for hours and hours and can barely pull off a C. Unfortunately the class is not curved.
Really interesting lectures, incredibly charismatic and engaging. If you want to retain the information, take 106 from Macedone. Did 13 exams this semester, which meant a lot of work, but I learned a ton also.
Engaging entertainer. He gets the information across well but has impossibly hard tests that you cannot prepare for in any way. Then no curve. The final exam is also worth 30% of your grade which is stupid. Willing to work with you to a point. Doesn't realize that you have other classes/work/family/sleep which are more important. Try someone else.
I think a good teacher. He does make you go class (iclicker). Average score on test is about 70-75. Loved fire in clsss, but no mastering chemistry. He was fun, my ta was very helpful, but don't do 8am section.
Fantastic teacher! Passionate about learning and teaching, inspired others, helped me to remember that I love chem after bad experience in 105, kept good focus, helpful/encouraging, a LOT of tests (but they help in the long run), lectures engaging and helpful. Go to class AND TA sessions. Hard work, but worth it. LOVED teacher & class.
Dr. Macedone is awesome. I am not sure why people complained in the past about his tests. I feel like he prepared us well for them. Would recommend.
His class is tough, but he loves the subject and is willing to help if you ask. Very personable and willing to give you attention. Great class, and he does a great job. Will take him for Chem 223. Don't think you can get an A without working for it, though.
Best Chemistry professor I've ever had! His teaching style is very clear and entertaining. Tests are extremely difficult, average of 67-70%, but that's how Chemistry is. You take 14 tests during the semester, 1 or maybe 2 each week, which can be overwhelming, but you'll know the material better than any of the other kids in other classes.
Dr. Macedone is very passionate and loves what he does. His lectures are great and entertaining because that is just his personality. He does really care about the students and is very approachable. There were 13 "mini tests" and I got tired of studying and going to the testing center by about the 7th test. Other than that I LOVED his class
Inorganic chemistry alone is a terrible subject and Macedone makes it a whole lot WORSE! The tests are way too long and his teaching method is very unclear. In hindsight I wish I would have taken the class with another professor. He says he cares about his students but the way his class is setup says otherwise.
Dr. Macedone is very enthusiastic and cares about his students. However, his class set-up is awful. He gives a test in the testing center every week (or more) and it's so overwhelming. I never felt prepared for tests and it's hard to keep up especially if you are taking several other difficult classes. I would never recommend him to a friend.
The class was fine. I studied, took the 13 tests, and did good. My friends and I studied together and we all are being good grades.
Dr. Macedone is a great teacher. I admire his efforts in helping his students but he just isn't that helpful if you try to see him during his office hours. I'd say that this class is pretty hard for the most part, but it's fair which is what matters to me. I got an A in the class by getting lucky. If you try hard, you can expect a fair grade. Good!
I wouldn't reccomend his class. You have 13 "mini test" which often take up to 2 hours to take. His class isn't well organized. Almost every single test has a question or two that he throws out, because he didn't have time to prepare the test properly. He gives "concept maps" to help you with tests, but they come out so late, they are useless.
Amazing teacher. You must attend each lecture, and do the reading before each class. If you do both of those you will get an easy A or B. He really cares about his students, so go talk to him. He loves to help students, and helps understand hard concepts. He has a lot of tests, but its nice because it breaks the material up in do-able parts.
Love him! Cares about his students, super enthusiastic, and a great teacher to boot. Several small-ish tests so you can make up for a bad first exam (even with a grading scheme that doesn't recognize improvement). I also recommend 223 to anyone looking to do any kind of lab work. It'll teach you good lab practice and some great foundational skills.
Dang this class is stressful. Manageable if you stay very on top of it. You have about a test a week and they aren't easy. Realistically an A is attainable, I got an A- and worked my butt off. I would recommend Lindford if your main concern is your grade (better curve) Chem 106 at BYU is probably going to be a pain no matter who your teacher is.
In front of a room full of students he is fun and entertaining. However, in one-on-one communication he is kind of conceited. Whenever I emailed him, he made me feel like my question was stupid. Then I would notice he had altered the class document in question. I had work during my section once and he refused to let me attend his other section :(
This comment below was not completely accurate. I just had a miscommunication. He is a good teacher.
Macedone is by far the best professor I've had. He is always there for you, even if it has nothing to do with chemistry. My favorite thing about him is that when you ask him a question, he will answer it but then check to make sure that you actually understood it and that he phrased it well. He is also hilarious and really really helpful.
Dr. Macedone is a great entertainer. That being said, he doesn't seem to like to answer questions. He seems to assume that students with questions are slackers who didn't do the reading or didn't pay attention in class. As a student who does those things diligently, I was bothered when he refused to answer my questions. Difficult tests as well.
Prof Macedone is a great teacher! He is energetic and exciting. I actually enjoy going to class, even though there is a love/hate relation between me and Chemistry. If you are unsure which professor to take Chem 106 from, take it from Macedone. P.S. his tests are super difficult.
I was hardcore struggling with personal stuff when I took this class, but I went to talk to Macedone and it was probably the best interaction I've ever had with a professor. I was sobbing in his office and he was super kind and forgiving of my situation. I'm going to retake the class from him next year when I am in a better place mentally.
Lectures are very difficult to understand, and tests are trying to apply everything you have learned by testing on things we haven't seen. He calls them 6 "mini tests" but I spent just as long in the testing center taking those exams as I did any other midterm. Very hard class and wouldn't suggest taking him unless you have an easy schedule
Best professor I've had. Cares about the students and you doing well. Always willing to help and prepares you well for the exams. Just like every other chemistry class, it is hard. But know the stuff on the necessary skills list, study hard, and you can get an A. He is passionate about chemistry and helps you to be too.
I've been to the office hours most of the semester. I've been helped a lot. My grades have gotten better, but it is still hard. Good teacher, good class. Like my ta too. I'm no Chen major tho
Macedone drives me crazy. In one-on-one communication he is very arrogant and thinks he has you "all figured out". He thinks is all cute and clever with his sound effects and jokes, but really it is just distracting. His tests are crazy hard and there are 6 of them, as if our lives revolve around chemistry. Too much smart works.
Okay, so he says he is trying to help out the students which he does but is very arrogant and prideful about it. That being so I stayed away from asking him questions because he made me feel stupid for asking them. Thankfully I had good friends to teach me and help me get through it. His lectures are entertaining and class goes by so fast.
This is a difficult course, but I enjoyed it far more than CHEM105. Professor Macedone is a wise man who wants to help as much as he can and gives himself completely to the course. He was helpful when I needed it, but was also stern and challenging and made me work for my grade. There is an emphasis on learning and growth, not on grades.
Professor Macedone's class is awesome. Everything is so organized and well-laid out, and there are a lot of points that get dropped so the pressure is never too high on any test/assignment. The 6 "mini-tests" are painless and easy provided you review the Necessary Skills List. Just show up, enjoy the lectures, and get an A.
Dr. Macedone's lectures are very entertaining. He's a funny guy. There is a "mini test" about every two weeks. They are tough, but one is dropped. The final is worth about 3 or your "mini tests," so it can really save you or hurt you. Something to know before hand is that you can NOT review past exams. difficult (as expected), but overall good.
Dr. Macedone is a very intelligent man. His lectures were great. He is very funny and is very inspirational at times. There were 6 mini-tests, 1 every two weeks. He drops one. You WILL NOT see your test after you take it. I would recommend him, but I highly advise you use Khan Academy videos to further understand the concepts. Good luck.
I was waiting until the grades came out to say this, but I got my A.
Dr. Macedone is an amazing guy and even better lecturer, but awful professor. Expect to study 20-30 hours per exam and still be hit with random concepts you've never seen before. The worst part about it is that if there is an unfair or unclear question, he protects himself by not discussing the test with you at all. Don't risk your GPA!
Very entertaining, enthusiastic about the subject, and has great life advice lectures that he throws in about once per test. His tests are just difficult versions of everything he lectures on and has homework for. Know the nuances of each kind of problem, because to get a good grade you need to know them. Though funny, kind of unapproachable.
Dr. Macedone is an amazing professor! His lectures are super interesting, and he truly cares about his students and the subject. He gives 6 mini tests (all multiple choice) which is nice because you have less material per test. However, I felt less and less prepared for the tests as the semester went on. Make sure you go over the necessary skills
Dr. Macedone is very passionate about what he teaches, which makes the class more enjoyable. However, there is a lot of material to cover with plenty of assignments to keep you busy. There is a balance between understanding math and understanding principles. Probably your best choice for this class.
Dr Macedone is a good teacher and instructor. The class has a lot of material conceptually in addition to plenty of math. Go to lecture, go to recitations, and ask plenty of questions. He's a great guy and very funny.
Dr. Macedone is a great lecturer and is very passionate about chemistry. However in order to do well on tests you have to understand the lecture and then some. His tests are quite difficult, and they are extremely frequent. Take this class only if you're ready to put in an extreme amount of work.
Dr. Macedone is a really great person. We had 6 mini tests. Because there are so many of them, one of the tests is dropped. I did horribly on a test so I went to talk to him. He took the time to talk to me and believed in me. I got 100% on the next test and an A in the class. He made me want to be a professor to inspire students the way he does.
Difficult class, but Dr. Macedone is very willing to work with/help his students. Make sure to expose yourself to the material before each lecture and stay on top of the homework. There are about 6 exams and a midterm (about every other week). He wont let you see the exam after you've taken it, but will let you know the concept of each question.
It was hard. LOTS of "mini tests" NOT MINI. They still take like two hours each. But he's super quirky in a funny way. I really enjoyed this class
Even though this was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, it has also been my favorite. Dr. Macedone truly cares about his students and will take the time to get to know you. I've never had a more fun, more caring, more accessible professor. If you learn best by listening to lectures, then Dr. Macedone is your man!
Great educator. Does a good job at helping you learn in class. A lot of iClickers, don't need the text book, a lot of chemical reactions (which is super fun), full of energy. Lots of homework though. Overall, a great teacher
When I had a question, the professor's answer was, "Study more" and the TA's answer was, "Good luck." If that's your jam, go for it. If you value your education, learn from someone else.
Here's the deal, Macedone is a really energetic person and lectures well, but he is soo into himself. He is horrible to work with one on one and just tells you to study harder instead of actually helping you learn. His tests are nothing like his exam examples and even though they are "mini" tests, he is totally fine with a D- average on them.
He really just isn't that great of a teacher. He'll pull things for the exams that aren't covered very well in class. Exam reviews are terrible. He treats the class like children in his structure and attitude. Mini tests are just an excuse to do 6 normal tests instead of 3. If you can avoid him for 106, do it.
Because there are so many midterms in this class, Dr. Macedone will sometimes fly through the material instead of taking time to really explain the concepts. The tests do not accurately represent the material we were presented in class.
If I could have taken another teacher I would have. His tests are too hard and I would often leave the tests furious, feeling like I have been cheated. I feel like the tests do not accurately represent the difficultly of the material learned in class. Some people like him though so take the risk if you please, all of the 106 teachers are hard.
I really enjoyed this class, the material is difficult and the tests are difficult as well, but Dr. Macedone is a great teacher and really cares about his students. He is always willing to answer questions you have. There are a lot of midterms over the course of the semester, so be prepared to spend a lot of time on this class.
This class seemed great at the start, but Macedone would consistently treat us like children. We were always sushed and not allowed to review tests. He would fly through material and skip around (or totally forget a topic). If you want that atmoshere and be told to just study harder when you go in for help, then I guess he is your man.
Just took the final. Relieved, but it was about what I expected. It was like mid-terms. It's chemistry people, go to see the explosions, study to get your A. BTW, make sure you listen to your TA.
Macedone really is great in lectures and I fee like he teaches really well. I also appreciate that he genuinely cares about students progress and learning. However the exams often include information that wasn't included in lectures and you will be expected to teach yourself. Smartwork is also the worst program I have ever had to work with. Easily
The 6 mini-tests help you master the concepts a lot better than having 2 midterms would. Questions on the tests were often not questions we discussed in class, but if you're good at analytical thinking then you'll be able to figure most of them out.
Nice guy, but his class structure is infuriating. You take SIX Midterms, that about one exam every two weeks. His tests are horrible: They're heavily weighted, 1% of your grade /problem missed. And they're poorly written, you'll end up missing questions on concepts you understand because of this.
I really like him as a person. You can tell he tries really hard, puts a lot into his lectures, and cares a ton about his students and helping them learn. Every now and then it feels like he spends too much time on inconsequential things though, he does 6 mini tests which is impossible if you work, tests tricky and won't let you review them after.
First things first, Chem 106 will be hard whoever you take it from. I'm a big fan, funny guy with interesting lectures where he relates the concepts to real life, but his tests were tough. When there are tests with a D+ average then something is wrong... Not being able to review your tests doesn't allow you to improve, but 1 gets dropped
Dr. Macedone was an amazing professor who really cared about Chemistry and made you really learn about how it was all around you. He also tied in amazing spiritual thoughts every now and then and he just really cares about his classes. Chemistry is tough, like always, but he and his TA's are AMAZING and they will help you no matter what.
Dr. Macedone teaches how he would like you to learn instead of teaching you how you can best learn. He wants you to do all you can first, then go to him where is simply tells you "I can't just hand it to you." Well then why are you teaching? He misses some things that are on the tests and his final is comprehensive. Take from someone else.
While Dr. Macedone is an engaging teacher, he is extremely lecture heavy. He gives a midterm about every other week which he does not allow you to see after the fact. How are you supposed to get help when you don't know what you need help with? The averages on our tests was a D+ which he thought was perfectly acceptable and "normal".
I worked very hard in this class. I went in 4 times to his office after reading textbook sections, watching Youtube videos, and even sitting in on another professor's lecture, and he just couldn't understand how I wasn't getting it. I asked if he could simply repeat the section with me for 5 min. He said "I can't just hand it to you". Hard tests.
He's a funny guy, but not a good professor. I worked so hard in this class and I still barely escaped with a C. It doesn't help that he won't let you see your tests so you have no way of knowing what problems you missed. His tests weren't very fair since there was almost always material that wasn't covered in class on the tests.
I like that I learned how to be careful with my lab work. I liked regular contact with Dr. Macedone, even though he really cares about sig. figs. This prof. and class changed how I do things in the lab. I'm better for it, but make no mistake, this was alot of work!
Really relatable guy. Science is cool, and I liked this class. It was a lot of lab hours.
He is passionate about chemistry. This class is a lot of math, which I loved doing. There are daily smartwork assignments that are do to help you practice the material, as well as 6, 20 question tests. He drops one of the tests in the end. He's tricky and will test your knowledge, you need to know your stuff. This is a chemistry class, so work.
I llike this one class. Good teacher.
He is an extremely funny guy, but at the same time, helps all people, chemistry lovers or not, to enjoy his class. It's built to keep your attention and he really understand the struggle a student has learning this stuff. It's not something you can passively do, but it isn't impossible to pass with a good grade. He brings emotion and inspiration.
He acts funny and approachable during lecture, but if you approach him outside of class he treats you like you're stupid for not grasping something immediately. He assumes it's a problem with you rather than his way of teaching. Also, he gives way too many tests and doesn't let you review them, which is kind of essential for improvement.
Dr. Macedone's enthusiasm for Chemistry is contagious. Like all BYU Gen Chem classes, this class is a lot of work, and he's a tough grader, but I think the experience is well worth your time. I felt like I really learned the material and was better for it, and Dr. Macedone is one of the most wonderful people you'll ever meet.
Prof. Macedone is a very engaging professor. He uses powerpoints and does a lot of demonstrations to help teach. He is very willing to help outside of class and is really helpful during his office hours if you have any concerns. Tests are tough and don't really follow the homework style very well. Reading is necessary if you want a good grade.
Macedone has a passion for chemistry that is contagious. If you can stay on top of the material then chemistry isn't too bad. He gives 6 midterms (the last being the last day of class, right before finals) and drops your lowest. He gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit. Macedone is super helpful outside of class as well if you are struggling
This class was very straight forward and the lectures were great. I never read the textbook and just studied the slides, did Smartwork, and talked to the TAs. I averaged 96% on the 6 tests with just that. He also gives extra credit!! There are 6 tests, but all Chem 106 classes are doing 6 tests now. It was much easier than Chem 105.
After the last day of class I realized how much even though it wasn't my major, I 've enjoyd this class. I liked the instructors passion about teaching, that helped me stay interested throughout the class. The class is hard, but all my classes at BYU are hard. I hear a lot of students complaining about working for it, and that's just college..
Though he touches on some topics more effectively than others, Dr. Macedone is a very competent professor. Tests range from medium to difficult and require a thorough understanding of the concepts. Since there are so many tests though, it's easy to burn out near the end, but stick with it! You won't regret it.
Dr. Macedone is such a good teacher! I really enjoyed being in his class. He makes the lectures very engaging. There are a lot of tests, just be aware.
Dr. Macedone is a great professor and he's very enthusiastic and hilarious. He really tries to make lectures fun and I was actually able to learn a lot from him. There are a lot of tests and I probably would've gotten an A- if I hadn't of bombed the final, even though I got about 100% on all the other assignments. Great class, Chem is always hard.
Prof Macedone is SO AMAZING. He is such a funny guy who has a true passion for not only chemistry, but his students. He really cares about your success and understanding of content. Never hesitant to take advantage of his office hours if you're ever in need. His tests are kinda the worst, but you walk out of the class really learning something.
Dr. Macedone is a great professor. He cares about how students learn. Chem 227 is a hard course regardless of the professor, but Dr. Macedone tries to make up for it with great lectures and ample time to talk through problem students experience. He is in it for the students. If you match his energy, this class is a great experience.
He's a real piece of work. He is incredibly self-righteous and can say some of the most awful things with a smile and a pep in his step because if you smile it's not rude. He insights competition in his students when he should be trying to help. His tests are written to trick and not to test mastery of the material.
Chem 227 was hard, but Dr. Macedone made it enjoyable. The class is "under construction," I liked the class. I can recommend him and the class.
Minimal feedback on assignments during the semester. Poorly written exams. Unclear grading criteria. Did not feel respected or enjoy the class.
Awesome with basic chemistry concepts, but doesn't teach the harder concepts well (or at all), then hits you with test questions covering the difficult. If you are studious, read, and do EXTRA practice, you will be fine. If you don't understand chemistry well, and are Pre-med, expect to work pretty hard. Oh and you have to write two essays...
Dr Macedone made Chem 106 an even better class for me. His lectures were helpful for learning the material, and he used iClickers to register participation in class. His tests were difficult but doable. He is very willing to help you learn the material during class and outside of class. He also made lectures a fun experience.
Dr. Macedone is one of the best professors on campus! I loved this class. The concepts are hard, but he doesn't try to trick you. Macedone wants you to succeed and it's very clear. You have to put in the work, but his lectures are super helpful. I learned so well from him, he's so passionate about what he teaches. I highly recommend his class!
Dr. Macedone was awesome! He is so enthusiastic about what he teaches, it's contagious. He actually cares about his students too. He would go around to the groups during lab answering questions and making sure our experiments were going well.
Dr. Macedone is a solid guy. He is funny, energetic, caring, but he really pushes you to learn. I didn't really like his class, but he did a good job at making it not-so-sad.
Fantastic! Engaging, passionate lectures, loves chemistry and wants you to succeed. Don't EVER skip class or even be a few minutes late. Approachable, and explains things well. Exams fluctuate in difficulty, but you will absolutely have to work for a good grade. Not an easy class, but he drops a lot of grades, and he and TAs are extremely helpful
Professor Macedone is a good choice for Chem106. He understands and explains all of the material very well. The class is difficult because of the subject matter but he doesn't try to trick or confuse you on assignments or exams. He has several mini-tests throughout the semester so each one is weighted less and helps you see your progress.
Dr. Macedone is incredible. Seriously the best lecturer I have ever seen and definitely has more energy than any professor I've had. The concepts can be hard, but his expectations are extremely clear. He really wants you to succeed and he is so passionate about what he teaches. 10/10 would recommend to everyone.
Even though he is hilarious make sure you sit down and shut up because he does not like loud classes.
This man deserves a 5.0. His lectures were so entertaining, yet so informational. I enjoyed all of them and was actually interested in the subject I thought I would be trudging through. He is so funny and teaches difficult concepts in such a clear way. I high A's on all the midterms and bombed the final, so study for that lol.
Dr. Macedone is a great guy and is obviously very passionate about chemistry. His lectures were engaging and interesting. However, make sure that if you take this class you are prepared to study hard for every test and especially the final if you want to do well. He swears that he's not trying to trick us on any of his exams, but I feel otherwise.
if you are taking chem 106 he is the best professor you can get! He teaches things very well in a way that you can understand it. If you know what is on his slides and can do all of the problems on his practice tests he gives in class the day the exams open you will be golden! There are a lot of midterms but it was really nice for pacing yourself.
Took in 2016. Passionate in lectures but jokes around a lot. Not my favorite style personally. Tests were ridiculously hard. He said he teaches basics and then tests in advanced stuff "we should be able to figure out." I felt like he did a poor job teaching concepts that were on the test. Maybe if I studied harder? Felt the grade curve was unfair.
Dr. Macedone is incredible! Take him for CHEM 106!!!!! He teaches using a lot of demonstrations, applies Chemistry to the real world, and uses a lot of great techniques to help you understand what's going on. I loved this class! He drops 3 quizzes, 10% of iclicker quizzes, and even a test, so one bad score will not hurt your grade.
Macedone is a super fun, nice guy and his lectures were very exciting. But, he spent a lot of time on demonstrations and real world examples and not enough time on teaching the actual material. Would recommend him if you're naturally good at chemistry, but if not I have heard that the other teachers have much easier/fewer tests.
I cannot express how much I loved having Dr. Macedone as my prof this semester. He is definitely one of my favourite profs that I have had at BYU. He is funny, but still super respectable. He is super invested in helping his students do well, even if he does administer a lot of tests. SOOO fantastic, can't say enough good things about him!! :)
I didn't do great on a couple of the 6 tests, but Macedone doesn't allow you to look at what you missed. This class just isn't student-friendly and Macedone seems more concerned about "upholding the academic integrity" of the class than having successful students. If you struggle with any aspect of chemistry, don't take this class.
Great and Engaging Teacher. Graded on attendance, try not to miss a lecture, this class builds on previous things taught. Tests are difficult, study each unit, again this class builds on itself so it's important to understand each part before moving on to the next. Macedone moves quick in lecture, but again, very engaging.
I was unable to finish the course due to health issues, but I took the course for about half of the Winter 2019 semester. Dr. Macedone was very kind and caring, and worked with me personally when I struggled. He is easily one of the most caring professors I have had at BYU, and if you plan on taking CHEM106, take it from him.
Macedone may have been the best professor I've ever had. Not my favorite, but the best. He is so organized, has an incredible energy, and cares greatly about each student. He can be harsh though, and relying on group members you can't pick is frustrating. The class is brutal, but I can't imagine how much worse it would be with an average professor.
PROFESSOR MACEDONE is my favorite BYU professor this far. He is extremely funny, and is an amazing teacher. Chem 106 with him was loads easier than Chem 105, but you still have to work for it. Class is graded test heavy (6 or 7 exams), but if you study and take your time to do the work and understand the material, the class is great. TAKE HIS CLASS
Dr. Macedone is very nice and his lectures are amazing. Chem106 is very hard and requires a lot of work. This class has 6-7 tests. His tests are very hard. The most frustrating thing is you are not able to review tests. Dr. Macedone personally helped me so much and was very kind during a very hard time in my life. He is on our side and helpful.
Dr. Macedone is the bomb diggity! He's so great not just because he's hilarious or energetic, but because he really cares about his students. He always asks for questions, never speeding through the material. He makes a brutal class like this one loads better. Get ready to learn. This class is an investment!
Dr. Macedone was very condescending and not open to understanding student's experiences. I went to his office hours to ask for help and was lectured for an hour about how I was too "proud" and needed to accept I wouldn't get an A in his class. He expected perfection from his students but he did not hold himself to the same standard.
Macedone is hilarious and lectures are fun. But, if you don't understand your exam grade, good luck. I visited his office to review the test, and he refused to go over it. When I explained that this class was difficult for me, he asked if I had a learning disability and then handed me a paper that taught me how to "properly" study. Thanks.
Professor Macedone was terrible. He was energetic in class and did a lot of experiments but none of the concepts were taught well. A test average was 61% and he didn't say or do anything about it. I got more from the textbook than him. He would test on things no one understood. I want to take 106 again to learn, because I didn't learn from him.
Professor Macedone is a great guy. He shows a passion for chemistry, and I especially appreciated his upbeat and positive teaching style. He wasn't always the best at explaining difficult concepts, but there were always resources for help. My only complaint was that the exams weren't always representative of what we learned in class.
Macedone was the GREATEST professor I have had at BYU so far. He was so caring and willing to go over difficult concepts. The TA's were also super caring and willing to meet with me. I did go to the Chemistry Tutorial Lab often too! On top of all the resources, this man actively sought out ways to HELP his students. I want to TA for this man!
I love Professor Macedone! He is so supportive of his students. He understands that chemistry is hard and gives grace where he can. His lectures are always very entertaining, and if you have a good TA, you'll understand the material just fine. I wish I could take more classes from him.
I loved Dr. Macedone. His class was a beast and his tests were extremely hard but he really pushes you to think outside the box and he cares about his students. If you take 106, take it from him! I cant say enough good things about him. Chem 106 is hard however you slice it but if you have to take it might as well take it from him.
He has such a huge love for the subject and his students. His lectures are both hilarious and information packed, because CHEM 106 has a ridiculous amount of material to cover. His goal is for you to understand the concepts yourself, so the tests are deliberately hard in order to make you stretch and grow. Loved his class.
Dr. Macedone is an amazing professor. He and Dr. Hansen team-teach analytical chemistry and make an otherwise boring class incredibly interesting and entertaining. Especially if you compare this one to other chemistry courses, this class will become your favorite class. Lectures are fun and the course is set ip for you to succeed at every turn.
Dr. Macedone is one of the very best professors I've had while at BYU. He is incredibly persistent about becoming a better lecturer and it shows. He cares deeply about student welfare and success, and I have never seen a faculty member of any department give so many opportunities to succeed. He is truly a gem in the chemistry department.
He's the absolute worst. The tests and homework are nothing like the reading or what you go over in class. He actually teaches really well he just doesn't actually prepare you for the test. I tried talking to him about it and he just told me that I "didn't have a mind for chemistry" and didn't do anything to help me. DO NOT TAKE HIM
The world doesn't deserve Dr Macedone. He is VERY prompt with using class time. He likes having fun in class while still focusing on teaching. iClicker points in class so you'll need to go. Learning Suite Tests&Quizzes. Smartwork homework. Final + 5 20 question tests that are open book¬e, closed internet.
HE IS AMAZING! The best professor I've ever had at BYU. Some people get frustrated because Chem 106 is a hard class, but he makes it the best it can possibly be. He actually made me want to come to class because his lectures were so engaging and hilarious! He is on the students' side and does all he can to help us succeed. Great guy and professor.
Professor Macedone is by far the best option for CHEM 106. His lectures are very clear and very enticing. While there are multiple online assignments throughout the week, his tests were open note and he prepared us very well for them. He is funny, VERY caring, and incredibly inspiring. He changed my attitude toward chemistry for the better.
Professor Macedone is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are incredible, and he isn't afraid to change his lesson plan in the middle of class if he can see that the clas isn't getting it. Although there is a lot of homework and exams, he prepares you well. He is clear in his expectations and doesn't try to trick you on tests.
My major and emphasis are extremely heavy with math and sciences classes, but from these classes I have learned that the most important attribute a professor can have is passion for their subject. Dr. Macedone loves what he does and you will learn so much if you are willing to put forth the effort. I highly recommend taking 106 from him!
Hands down the best chem professor I have ever had. He is a little quirky, but his lecture are great and his material makes sense. take it from him if you can cause he is the best
Professor Macedone teaches with lots of passion and enthusiasm. I really enjoyed his lectures because they were easy to listen to and he taught very clearly. However, when I spoke with him one on one, he was often rude and seemed to not care about my concerns. When you speak with him, it is a "too bad, that's your problem" type of vibe.
First I would like to say that he really really cares about both chemistry and teaching, and it shows. He is passionate and I appreciate that. However, his class is structured horribly. I also had numerous experiences of my own and of other students that indicate that, in person, he is dismissive and makes you feel kinda dumb.
This class is hard. However, Dr. Macedone make his lectures easy to understand and is a very good teacher. Lectures are always interesting and engaging. Come to class!! He does his tests in a "mini-test" style, which means more tests than your average class. You can't go over missed questions so studying can be a bit challenging.
For sure a difficult class but Prof Macedone is fair and tries to give his students what they need to succeed. Make sure to read the book before lecture to get an idea of what you will be learning. His tests are difficult, but there are five of them so each counts less and one gets dropped which helps. Overall a difficult class but I learned a lot.
Probably the best prof for 106, but made students feel dumb. Decided to change the format of the Final two days before it opened because he couldn't take the time to write more exam questions, it was non-negotiable. Was petty about people talking in class. But slides and lectures were helpful with studying. Ask for the practice test questions early
Didn't turn in a single homework assignment in on time yet still got 100% on the homework.
Macedone was the worst professor I think I've ever had. He acts really nice and funny in front of the whole class (claims to care about his students), but when confronted in a one on one scenario he became condescending. His tests were unlike the homework he gave, so it was hard to prepare for them.
Dr. Macedone's lectures are fantastic. He is a good guy, but he seems really set in his ways, even if they clearly need to be improved upon in some ways. It seems as though student feedback is largely unimportant to him. His tests were very unfair and as a result, they were extremely difficult despite knowing the material. it was very frustrating.
I love how he teaches and makes lectures lively! The TA reviews and his PPTs help for the midterms, but the final is 40% of the grade & there's no class-final review, so study in advance! The final was supposed be open-note online, but it switched to the testing center due to cheating, yet he was nice and curved the class afterwards which was nice!
He was my least favorite professor and person I've met at BYU. We had every test open note which was cool, until the week of the final he changed it last min to closed note in the testing centre. Not super fair IMO. He was a good lecturer, but so condescending and tests were horribly written. The class didn't promote learning at all
His lectures were super engaging, but once the frequent and difficult tests came, I realized fun lectures aren't worth getting screwed on the test. He wouldn't let students see exams or learn from mistakes. Any time you would ask him questions he would have little patience and thought anyone struggling meant they had no study habits. AVOID HIM.
Great teacher. I really enjoyed his class, and he really cares about helping you succeed. The class was very hard, there was a lot of homework, and the tests were very difficult, but nothing was unfair or "tricky," and once you get into the routine it's not too much to handle. Utilize the TAs and go to his office hours and you'll be ok :)
Professor Macedone is an incredible lecturer and teacher. Many students experience academic whiplash when tests begin, as his cheery nature does not translate into his often brutal tests. If you put effort in to his class, you will have an exceptional chemistry experience.
He's funny, amazing lecturer, and all that but when it comes down to your grade he is extremely strict on arbitrary grading criteria not specified and is extremely condescending to students if you ask him to explain why. He's very humorous but also equally rigid which is hard to read as a student.
Professor Macedone is a good guy and lectures are fun, but his tests will absolutely destroy you. His tests are all free response and so hard! He doesn't do open-note tests anymore. His lectures and the smartwork will not prepare you for the tests because he tries to give you the hardest problems, and he only gives you two hours to figure it out!
Best CHEM 106 professor no doubt. His lectures are funny and engaging. The material is difficult, but the TAs are your best friend. I didn't read the textbook, but the HW and quizzes are essential for success. The tests are difficult, but he gives you practice tests which are helpful.
I loved Dr. Macedone! He was the most passionate professor I've ever met and wanted students to succeed. I actually wanted to attend class every day. He also did some really cool chemistry demonstrations. 'There were 5 small tests (one dropped) plus a final. The tests definitely weren't easy but if you put in the work, the class isn't too bad
Macedone's exams are INSANELY hard and unfair. I got As on all my 105 tests but for most of the 106 midterms I got Cs and I felt like the tests did not reflect my effort at all--super stressful. TAs are nice though and lectures are actually engaging I just felt like an idiot taking the tests even though I put in all the work for the class
Dr. Macedone is an amazing professor. He demonstrates over and over again that he truly cares about your success. He's amazing with questions and will devote his time to you until you understand it. I didn't do the best in this class but I would say that's due to my own faults and not Dr. Macedone's. He's truly an amazing and kind professor.
Dr. Macedone was a great lecturer, but when it came to the tests so much of the information on them was not covered in the lecture. We also were unable to review our exams after taking them, so it was difficult to understand what we did not know. You need to be in class for iClicker points and tests were all free-response in the testing center.
Dr. Macedone was my favorite professor. He genuinely cares about his students and he brings lots of examples to class to help his students grasp new material. Don't skip, you won't understand new material. There are 5 midterms but the lowest gets dropped. His tests are hard and only open for 2 days. If you put the work in though you should be fine.
So I genuinely believe Professor Macedone is a good man and wants the best for his students, but he seems pretty stuck in his ways and gets defensive when questioned. He can get pretty rude and demeaning if the class isn't understanding the "simple" lecture he's presenting. Tests are hard, homework is easy. Average for final was 67
Macedone is a wonderful professor. Lectures are amazing. He's a competent teacher. Practice problems are relevant and help with test prep. Tests are super hard, but I think that is true for every professor in the chem department. Definitely take him! He makes chem enjoyable, and I looked forward to his class.
His lectures are amazing, and he addresses many real-world applications which makes it kind of fun. He truly strives to make a positive impact however so many of his policies are rigid, old school and unaccommodating. He grades using Iclickers in class which means if you don't understand a concept immediately you may miss points.
Not the best. The style of teaching and the material covered were not equivalent. He did not clearly teach a thing. This extended into the wording, and sometimes the TA's didn't even know what he meant. I worked wayyyy harder for a B than what is usual. I would never take him again and would actively avoid his childish manner of teaching lectures
A truly wonderful person and man of God. That being said, I do not think he is a very great teacher. He is very lecture heavy and gives a lot of fluff that is not needed. The grade is tests and Smartwork along with some iclicker points.
He's amazing. Very hard class, but he made it very possible. He really knows what he's talking about and he cares about his students a lot. Also, he's an amazing lecturer and super entertaining. 227 is a beast, especially spring term, but Dr. Macedone made it great. You still have to work hard and do things right, but he's always fair.
Professor Macedone is funny, but he will take the time to do a demonstration rather than teach you what you need to know. His lectures were rushed, and hard to understand. You have to answer Iclicker questions everyday on the reading. I went to every TA review, got tutored, practically anything I could and still did horribly. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
Professor Macedone was very engaging and nice, but sometimes he can be condescending to the class. Tests were tough and you are only given two days to complete them. My class was a higher performing class and the average score for our final was a D. Topics are frequently rushed, not fully explained, and later tested harshly.
I always enjoyed the lectures and the energy he brought to class. He was genuine and I enjoyed being in class. The tests were hard, more fair than other chem classes but I still found myself disagreeing with questions I felt were ridiculous. Don't mention things about the test at his office hours or he will flip.
In comparison to the professor I had for Chem 105, Dr. Macedone is very passionate about what he does. The tests were pretty hard though, and you don't get a large window to take them. As one who appreciates frequent demonstrations to engage the class, I liked his efforts to keep us interested, even if the class was too fast-moving at times.
Fakest professor I've ever met, pretends to be fun and nice but if you ever go to office hours he is super demeaning and terrible at answering questions. Tests are written poorly and filled with typos and mistakes in values and since you can't even see them afterwards you don't know. Terrible avoid at all costs.
If you're required to take Chem 227, know what you're getting into. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE EXAM 1. The whole class agreed that it was the hardest exam we had ever taken. It's no exaggeration to say that I spent 25hrs/wk on this class only for a B+. This probably the hardest class in the biochem major, and Macedone is merciless and provides no help.
Dr. Macedone is a high-love, high-expectations professor. Some may take his enthusiasm as condescending but I respected his commitment; he wants you to become a good chemist/biochemist. The TA hours are ESSENTIAL, go to them as often as you can for help with the reports and homework because they will practically just give you the answers.
Homework often was confusing and overly time-consuming, exacerbated by a lack of coding instruction. I felt like I needed to go to the TAs for everything. The exams were poorly written and had many spelling errors. Macedone, while promoting an open-door policy often seemed demeaning when seeking help. Overall, I really don't recommend this class.
He had entertaining lectures and did a good job applying what we learned to things we are already familiar with. His tests are super difficult and the prep materials given are not very helpful. I spent countless hours in the tutorial lab with TA's studying for this class and continued to get bad grades regardless of how much preparation I put in.
Piss poor professor. Sure he knows his stuff about chemistry and can be entertaining SOMETIMES, but 1 on 1, he is the worst professor ever. Went into his office hours asking for help multiple times, and every time I was told "that's not the best way to learn" AND said that if you work and struggle in his class, either quit the job or the class.
Dr. Macedone himself clearly knows the content well, but I didn't feel his class prepared me for the tests. He also does not allow you to see what you did wrong on the tests, so it is difficult to improve. Homework, lectures, and practice tests didn't really resemble the tests themselves.
I was fooled by the glowing reviews. He is a good guy with a nice personality but his exams hardly resemble any practice work you do in the class, even the sample exams and theres 6 of them. Also told students with jobs to simply quit them to do better. Very condescending in office hours. Uses iclicker for random graded questions in lecture.
I hated the midterms soooooo much. the BYU chem department wants students to get C's on all tests. Requires so much time to study. Dr. Macedone is great though. A great man who is a geek for chemistry. I didnt have a good experience in his office hours though. I wouldnt talk to him 1 on 1. He is a good teacher tho.
Very entertaining and fun lectures! Need a physical clicker, meaning you have to be in class to get participation points. There is no recorded or Zoom version of the lecture. There are like 5 mini-tests that are mixed free response and multiple choice, but he does drop 1. Also, he doesn't offer practice tests like other professors might, soo yeah.
Dr. Macedone has an insane ego and clearly is just here for research. He is condescending and does not prepare you for the exams. Tests are recycled so you can't see what you did wrong. 5 exams throughout the semester, plus a final. The exams are not at ALL like the HW, practice exams, or any other material given throughout the semester. AVOID!!!!
Going to lecture was a waste of time, but required to attend for random Iclicker points. I spent more time with my TA trying to learn everything. Lots of homework that is super picky and hard to answer. You don't get to see what your test scores are and they take forever to get graded. Don't take this class from him unless you want to cry everyday
I would highly recommend Macedone. I have taken 3 other college chem classes and this was the first one I actually enjoyed and found interesting. His lectures are fun and enjoyable if you get into it. If you had a bad mindset then you might not enjoy it, it is what you make it. Exams aren't terrible, it's a just a hard course.
Really does care about his students and gives lots of extra credit opportunities and drops. Tests are free response and hard, but I felt I had been prepared for all but the last one. Definitely will have to do the readings and go to recitation because he doesn't cover topics in-depth during lecture. Overall hard class but Macedone makes it doable.
The class itself is structured well, you just have five tests throughout the semester and a final. Lecture attendance is graded using iClicker. I found his lectures to be very annoying and agitating. He tries to make it interesting but his big personality is annoying. You are never allowed to see your test after you take it which is hard.
This class was almost my 13th reason why. Macedone is a nice guy, but the way he structures his class is beyond me. Even his TAs don't understand his thought processes. When I say his tests are nothing like the homework or practice exams, I mean it. He claims to make them super short to help us, but it does the complete opposite. Avoid if possible
First of all, no one's perfect. If you have a knack for chemistry, then taking 106 from Macedone will probably be fine. But, if you're like me and just can't seem to wrap your brain around it most of the time, Macedone himself will be no help to you. Pro-tip, if do you take him and struggle, rely on youtube (don't go to office hours).
Do not take this class. He spends more time trying to be funny than he does actually teaching. Tests are nothing like what is taught in class (avgs of ~69%). He is insanely condescending towards students and overall just a bad professor. He also doesn't hold his TAs to a high standard so they don't help. Wait and take it from a different professor.
The only thing good about Macedone as a teacher is the way he lectures. He is condescending and won't help you if you are behind. He is a good teacher for robots and valedictorians, but that is about it. If you are neither of those, find a different teacher and spare yourself some misery.
It just seems like this class is set up for you to not do well. out of 30 students 2 got an A. Memorize the lecture slides for the exams. Typos everywhere and there was a grading error which brought everyone's test grade down after they were posted. Apart from the absurd amount of HW, the experiments are pretty fun. Cool project at the end.
I had a negative experience with this professor. I thought that he could come off as passive-aggressive, and it kept me on my toes the whole semester. It seems like the class is set up to make students unsuccessful when it came to lab work. The exams were fair and learning about the instrumentation was interesting.
Macedone's lectures can be engaging, but the class structure is a challenge. Tests don't align with coursework, and he can be condescending. However, with dedication and tools like unstuckstudy ai for study prep, the class is manageable for motivated students.
If chem 105 was rough for you, take 106 from Macedone! Less busy work than 105, and his lectures were very entertaining and straightforward. 5 midterms, but there's less content per exam, so honestly not too bad. Do the textbook practice problems and study the lecture slides and you'll be set. Lots of EC throughout the semester. Would recommend!
He understands that chem isn't your only class and has set his course up for you to be successful. The tests are only open for 2 days, but one gets dropped. He also has iclickers for every class so you need to show up. He's one of the best professors I've had at BYU.
I retook this class this semester. Got a D the first time and a B the second. I have never made below a B+ before then. This class broke me down mentally. The tests do not align with the course work. I felt confident before most exams only to get a 68 or something close. However, my 67s were above the class average so I guess I should be grateful.
Professor Macedone is kind and funny, but his teaching style could be improved. He didn't always clearly explain the material, and the SmartWorks assignments weren't helpful. Office hours were intimidating, and the tests didn't align with what we studied. The class was tough for me, but others seemed to manage better.
Really funny guy. You'll love 106 with him if you: -Don't really care about chemistry, just taking it to fill the req -Like lots of exams -Have oodles of time You won't love it if you: -Care about the why beyond his curriculum (he'll shut you down) -Dislike lots of exams -Have harder classes you want to focus on Be ready to be tested on anything.
I liked Macedone, but his class is harder than other professors. You will do good if you read the textbook. He really cares about your success. Recitation was a waist of time, Our TA wouldn't show up half of the time. Class is graded fairly. If you fall behind you will fail this class, but thats just chemistry.
Dr. Macedone made me lose my love and motivation for chemistry. The homework and quizzes are not up to the calliber of the exam. He doesn't take feedback seriously. He does have some captivating lectures, but he doesn't go over any exam calliber questions until the exam review where everyone feels lost. He is a good man but a terrible professor.
If something is on the practice midterm, you can know it is not going to show up on the actual midterm.
5 midterms and a final, I barely knew what he was teaching before I was being tested on it. Exams average ~68%. He ignores feedback; acknowledged his poor ratings and said he didn't care. I went to office hours desperate for extra help or practice problems, and he just told me to quit my student job. Told me to go slower, but there are time limits.
Tests are big part of grade, and they're all free response so good luck. Not very sympathetic if you don't understand. But his lectures are fun and he's a good guy.
The so-called ''mini-tests'' are so different from all the homework they might as well be for another class.
very cringe, do not recommend
Bro legit thought the Baghdad battery was real and that it made the Ark of the Covenant dangerous
Shows a quirky persona in class. He cares about professionalism and keeping to policy.
This is a very challenging class and if you fall behind it is really hard to come back and not fail. Tests are all free response and the questions are very hard/different from the practice questions in lecture. You must go to class for participation credit. Recitation wasn't helpful. Go to the chem lab with TAs to help you! He is very entertaining.
He is very entertaining but doesn't always explain things very well. It is really hard to catch up if you get behind. All 6 tests are free response with questions that are way harder than what is practiced in class. Almost 10% of your grade is going to class. Recitation is not helpful. This is a VERY hard class.
VERY DIFFICULT TESTS Good lecturer, but be careful how you phrase questions because in his class there IS such a thing as a stupid question Homework and quizzes are manageable, but there are tons of them, check them every single day Pretty entertaining, I was never really bored in his class which is saying something for chemistry
He should be embarrassed of his low test score averages. When the average is a failing grade, something is wrong with the test.
Tests are hard. They are short and free-response, and you're only given credit for the right answer (no partial credit). The average test grade is 63-75%, and he doesn't curve them. His lectures are entertaining, but they don't prepare you well for the tests. He is nice outside of class but isn't very helpful if you are struggling or behind.
His laugh sounds like King Candy's from Wreck it Ralph. He's a good teacher. Very big on having the students act professionally (listen to his lectures without talking, come and leave on time). His tests are really hard because they aren't multiple choice. He's an entertaining teaching though and if you put the work in you do well.
If you want to learn chemistry and how to think critically, take this class. If you want a good grade, stay far away. He does a good job explaining the material. His class is structured to effectively help students grow. 70% of your overall grade comes from tests. The tests are not multiple choice. He doesn't let you see what you missed sadly.
He puts a ton of effort into his lectures and cares a ton about his students. Class is hard but on par with other Chem classes. Not too much of a course load and as long as you keep up with studying and put in your part it's manageable.
I'm pretty confident that Professor Macedone is clinically insane, but he is also one of the best professors that I have ever had. Cares a ton and puts in a ton of work to help you do the best you can. The easiest chemistry class to get an A in that I have taken so far, but only if you are self-motivated to learn. There isn't a lot of homework.
I initially was nervous to take chem with him based off of these reviews, but he was so much better than what some people say. He is a little silly, but if you can get past some of his quirks he is such a great professor. He knows how to teach, is understanding, and really cares about his students. Work load is very manageable.
Enjoyable lectures, but time-consuming material. His tests are super difficult. I would be fine with the course-load and the effort-to-grade ratio if he graded on par with the other professors in the department. There is a huge department discrepancy here. 40 A's vs 150 A's in Kelly's class. Not worth losing a scholarship over.
He seemed like he cared more about making the lectures entertaining than actually teaching.
Professor Macedone definitely has his quirks, but he's a great professor who genuinely cares about his students. Lectures are engaging and align with exam materials for the most part.Tests are weighted heavily, but one is dropped which is nice.
Not worth bringing your GPA down. He makes a joke about dating and having threesomes and thinks that will make up for the fact that the class average on his exams are anywhere from 65-75% His lectures and homework are stupid easy and then the exams are as if he threw a brick at you. He also cried about how great of a teacher he was??
Loved Dr. Macedone he was really likeable, BUT his tests were SO hard. they were all free response with some multiple choice here and there, but the multiple-choice questions were SO hard. We had 3 tests that had an average of below a 70. one 63, 68, 64. And he didn't curve them. He doesn't admit when he is wrong and blames it on the students.
He gave a lot of extra credit, which made it nice because the 5 test averages were so low (3 60s, 2 70s). honestly, i felt so smart and like i understood everything until the tests came around. Save yourself the GPA with Kelly cause I probs will retake this class with kelly to replace my grade:) come take kellys class with me!! save your confidence
If you want a good grade in chem them do no take Macedone. My friend who got 80s and above on the tests for all the tests got a D- on the final. Macedone is a GREAT person but a terrible professor. He always talks about why the reason his students struggle is because they don't know how to manage their time. His advice was to quit our jobs wtf.
His lectures were fun and entertaining, he also gives a lot of extra credit which is nice. However his test are incredibly difficult. They don't match homework or examples at all. I would walk out of his tests feeling like I got hit by a bus even though I felt I knew the material. He is a nice person but DON'T take unless you like crying.
Entertaining professor but his class is not set up for your sucess. Exams have averages in the 60s and all he says is that they are in line with historical trends. If the class is averaging that low, you're literally the problem. You aren't allowed to review exams, you only get to know the general topic of incorrect ?s so there is no room to grow.
Dr. Macedone taught the material well but had a frustrating amount of material that wasn't covered well found on the 5 midterms (free response) and final (MC). He has high expectations for his students. Sometimes treated us like children by shushing us. He will prepare you for the MCAT if you put in the many hours required to do well in his class.
If I could go back, I would definitely take him again. No chemistry at BYU is easy and honestly he gives you every chance to get a good grade. His final was one of my highest test scores and it was the most straight forward final I have ever taken. You don't need to be the smartest to get an A. Super good guy and fair Professor.
I found this class enjoyable, but the tests were very difficult. Once, he even had us do riddles for a review lecture instead of covering the actual material, because the tests were more similar to riddles than the chemistry we had been taught/practiced. Not a terrible professor, but if possible, I would avoid taking his class.
I have nothing against Macedone. Just was not my teaching style as someone with ADHD. I always had a hard time listening in lectures and trying to understand how to apply it. Chem is hard in general, but his open-ended exams made it harder. I got a D mostly because all homework was on a different website and I forgot to check that website a lot.
I loved Dr. Macedone's lectures and felt like learned from them. I reached out to Dr. Macedone bc I was getting a range of 80s-50s on the tests. He boosted my morale and helped me feel like a better student. That was, however, not helpful academically because, after a week of constant chem study, I got a 40 on the final. Love him but HARD TESTS!
His lectures were fairly engaging and he is a very sweet guy, but I would not recommend taking Dr. Macedone. He is condescending when answering questions. He doesn't allow students to look at past exams and had unnecessarily difficult exams, as seen in the test averages being in the 60s while the other chem professor scored consistently higher.
This class broke me. Macedone is a great lecturer, but unwilling to help you in any way. Sometimes wished the UTA bus would hit me while walking to this class. I lived in the library taking this class. OCHEM1,2,and BIOCHEM were a delightful and carefree experience compared to this brutal class meant to suck the joy form your soul.
Chem 227 has been completely overhauled and is excellent now! Like seriously, all the complaints of the past (such as the coding nightmares) are addressed. There are far fewer homework assignments, and Dr. Macedone is great at doing everything he can to help you out. Remember that this is still a difficult chem class though; discipline is needed.
Dr. Macedone is such a great professor! He cares deeply for his students and their success. Chem 227 is a very intense class and as a result Dr. Macedone's grading can be seen as tough but it is fair. My tips would be to understand what you are doing before the lab for accuracy scores and take time to study for tests. 8/18 got an A for Sp 2025.
This class was so hard and also so fun! Don't let it scare you. I felt like I nearly died going through it, but it is so fulfilling in the end. Dr. Macedone is super caring and will help in any way he can. He is a great guy. Our class average Spring 2025 was 90.37%. We all worked our tails off, but he made it worth it. I had a great time at QQI!
This class is no joke, but he has made changes recently to make it more doable, and it is indeed doable! Dr. Macedone is high love high expectations. He expects a lot, but also loves and care so much. I would not have made it through this class without him. He is a wonderful person and professor. This class is hard, but he makes it worth it.
Dr. Macedone does his best to ensure that a hard class is very enjoyable. The textbook is available online and free though the BYU library. Tests were a written exam which was pretty chill and an excel spreadsheet which was really difficult, but you had all week to do at home. Do the homework and labs to understand them and you will do well.
Macedone is a wonderful teacher; the class is pretty hard, especially if you're not into math or chemistry, but he did a great job of teaching it in a way that made sense. He's a very funny and kind man, truly passionate about his work. Watch out for the midterms though; they are both frequent and challenging. Make sure to take notes and study up.
This is a good, hard class. In the moment, it's actually fun. You learn so much that by the end, you feel genuinely grateful for the challenges. The professor runs the course like an internship and is incredibly gracious with late points. He holds high expectations, but as long as you show up and put in effort, you're supported and taken care of
