Professor Hamilton is the best art history professor I've ever taken. He is thorough, knowlegdable, and an excellent lecturer.

I didn't seem to have as much of a problem as the rest of these people did. Tests can be a little tricky but the slides are easy. 3 tests and no paper. I didn't study too intensly, read most of the reading (but rarely all of it before class)

Personally, i liked him but i can see why other people wouldn't. He is very knowledgeable about the information and definitely does his part but he can easily get off topic and gives pop quizzes sometimes so you should probably read. There are no papers though.

HE IS A COLLEGE PROFESSOR. Big surprise, he's not going to baby you. People don't seem to get that, and whine about how hard he is. Pay attention to lectures, read the material, study what he SAYS you need to study, and study it right. That's all it takes. He's very clear, and very knowledgeable. He's amicable, with a subtle, casual sense of humor.

he knows what hes talking about. but hes super hard. and goes way too far in depth. and you just end up confused.

Hamilton is a standard art history professor. You won't have any other assignments aside from tests and a few 1word popquizes. His specialty is Georgian Furniture so he couldn't answer some of the indepth Qs I had about ancient art but he's straightforward and he tells you which images are going to be on the test. Takes too long taking attendance.

massive amount of memorization.. very monotone lectures touches on a few interesting subjects, probably a good teacher for art history majors.. not soo much for everybody else..

Okay, the truth is that if you do want to learn and you want a teacher to encourage you with your studies and who actually wants you to pass, take him. I thought the class would be harder. GOOD THING - no essays. although, tests are a litte bit hard, you should read a looot.

If you attend class and listen to his lectures then you will get a good grade. His test are not easy but they're not ridiculously hard. I thought he had a sarcastic sense of humor which kept the class somewhat interesting.

I really liked Hamilton. His class is tough, don't take it if you don't wanna work. It's not extremely hard - no homework except for reading, and 4 exams. Read throughly and pay attention during lectures and you'll do fine. He specifies what he expects, writes important things on the board, and is very nice. Avoid an 8am class.

Not particularly engaging and tends to drone off on tangents. My main irk with him is that he constantly whines about SCAD, which is a bummer as a new freshman. There are 3 tests and that's it. No other way to raise your grade. They aren't unfair but can be a little tricky. Make sure you have good study habits and you'll be okay.

Prof. Hamilton is great. He really knows what he is talking about--and not just about art. He seems to like architecture quite a bit. I think he studied it too. The class is at 8am, but he make it fun. He has some pretty funny comments. I do not think he grades too hard, but he does not let you say just anything on the exams. He is helpful.

Taking British Modernism. Prof. emphasizes participation. Students do a lot of work in the class. This seems to help me, although he can put you on the spot. Exams are essay, slide, and some short answer-pretty balanced. He makes the book clearer for me. Seems to be very willing to help with papers. I am not a good writer, but he is encouraging.

While I can see why some many not like Hamilton's class, as a professor he was good. He has a very dry sense of humor and tends to trail off with his sentences, but you learn to understand him. Yes, he does expect you to know a lot and then samples only part. My biggest learning curve was focusing on what HE emphasized in class. Class at 8am...bad!

He does have a good sense of humor. I was worried about my grade and he stayed after to grade my final which put my mind at ease. He was doing this for others too. He seems very smart and really tried to help us. Yes lots of architecture on final.

Hamilton is awesome!I never liked history but he made it interesting.Read the last review-my section was nearly full at the end.Also prof did not mumble!Exams are easy if you study. He makes it very clear what to know.Different kind of study guides but they really helped.He is definitely an intellectual but he is easy to understand.No paper!

Hamilton was great. He kept me interested for the entire class (2.5 hrs!). He likes to have discussions with the whole class--lets you speak your mind. He can outargue anybody though. If you want a smart, funny, and interesting professor, he is the one.

He was great. Very Funny and interesting. He knows a lot about the topic and more. I got a B and I think that was probably what I deserved. He took time to talk to me after class whenever I wanted to. His exams are not hard if you study the way he suggests. You cannot just use flashcards. Only people who dropped were the ones who were brain-dead.

I think Hamilton is awesome. He has some great discussions that help me learn. He makes us participate and think about what we read. He seems to be helping a lot of students with drafts of their papers, but I have not finished one yet. Seems to favor British but knows a lot about all of it. He is funny in a funny sort of way.

So many reviews complain about the amount of reading and that you have to write a paper... well, it's COLLEGE. Get over it. Mr. Hamilton was extremely knowledgeable, clear, and receptive to questions. Also has a bit of a dry sense of humor... Yes, his class requires a lot of reading and studying but I still can identify all the buildings from it.

Good guy. Very smart. Easy going and funny in class. No paper in this class, but he helped me a lot with figuring out how to study. Learned a ton.

So much better than my earlier art history classes. I can't wait to go to Europe and see the places we have been talking about! Very fun class. He is very knowledgeable. Class is always different. Just had an exam--pretty easy.

I thought it was great! He says some very strange things that are funny. But he makes you think!

Was a great course. Felt very comfortable going into a room in which he could be intimidating (in a good Way) . He Always wants us to get it and that is why I like being there. "LIKED"is a better word since I will not be allowed t take his more advanced course next term. He is fair, pleasant and helpful.

Hamilton has a dry sense of humor and his lectures can be entertaining and funny. Interesting, too. Although he can be boring somedays. Tests are easy if you pay attention to the lectures. Multiple choice, fill-ins w/ wordbank, and a few short essays. You HAVE to read. I loved his class and you recommend it.

Last reviewer missed the point. Hamilton gets you--at least-most of us-to understand the material and how the works relate to each other and to the history of the period. I felt like I was remembering without having to memorize. Easy assignments that are very helpful. Always stayed after class and talked with students--very helpful.

Great course. I am an artist so learning about art is fun. Professor Hamilton is very knowledgeable. He asks a lot of questions--ok if you have read. I didn't think it was hard. He's a nice guy.

Prof. Hamilton is pretty entertaining, which keeps class interesting. His assignments are pretty easy and relate to what is going to be on the exam. The exams are mostly slide IDs, fill in the blank, lists, and short essays. His research paper is a bit strange, but not difficult (6-8 pages and he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.

Very fun course--amazing the stuff he knows and how he connects all together. Great for us architects to learn about the field's history and theory. I even learned tons about structure. New ways to learn and understand--maybe not new but effective. I agree. He is very funny and lively--a little offbeat at times.

8am classes are no joke. He sometime talk softly and I have to ask what did he say. Helpful professor, always there to help whenever I need. Test are not hard once you know what are his expectation. Lots of reading (obviously, this is college level). He tries to make it interesting. One of the few professors that I feel worth my money to study here

If you have the chance not to take his class, don't. But if you're stuck with him, don't panic. Most people pass, but getting an A is difficult. The amount of extra credit he gives makes it possible to move up a letter grade. READ before EVERY class, it makes the lectures easier. Review everything on the study guide as if it's the most important.

Amazing professor. I got an A in his class, but I worked my butt off for it (which is why we are all here, right?!). A lot of students didn't like him because he is difficult. You HAVE to do the reading, you HAVE to go to class, TAKE NOTES, PARTICIPATE and do all assignments esp. extra credit. And he is always looking for ways to bump up your grade

Loved Professor hamilton. Very straightforward and knows a lot. Helped me figure out how to study so I really improved.

Was worried because I am interior design major in an architectural history course. No problem. Very good lectures and covered interior design really well. Everything on exams expected. Very nice and funny in class.

Was disappointed to find out that he does not teach the second half of this course. This is really an art history course. Very interesting material. Great videos and discussions. First test was pretty easy.

Personally, I liked Prof. Hamilton's class. I was dreading this quarter because of this survey/art hist. course. While the material was relatively boring to me (I have no interest in art history), if you try, he will see that. He lectures mostly every class, but he gives study aids for every exam and makes it obvious on what you should do to pass.

Some people give this class a bad reputation b/c they hear negative things about teachers and grading, but if you genuinely listen to the lectures, take proper notes, and read the textbook, you'll be fine. Prof. Hamilton knows his field extremely well, and his tests are straightforward and always relate to material covered in class.

I really like the class. Lectures are fun and interesting. He met with me about my exam and was very helpful. The work is not hard. Just keep up and show up and you will be fine. He trys to make really old art and buildings relevant for today. Good discussions.

I am disappointed that Prof. Hamilton doesn't teach the 2nd section of ctxt. For an art hist. course I didn't mind his class. If you pay attention to discussions & read about things he writes on the board, you will be golden. He tells you exactly what to expect on the exam & each list assignment b4 prepares you for the exam too! would take again!!

Professor Hamilton is very nice and really smart. I thought 19th century art was really only Impressionism but it is much more! Lectures on Paris, Vienna, and London were really great. More than just the usual painting history.

Good course to finish my first year on. I have to get up early but it is really interesting. He is very fair. I always feel overprepared for the exams but I guess that is good.

Professor Hamilton is really nice and knows a lot about what we are studying. The course is required, but I would take it anyway since I am going to be an architect. Gradingwise he seems fair. I have a low A average now and we are nearly done. He always lets us out on time, unlike another of my professors!

The class is good. I had art history in high school. This was way better but not so much harder. Hes a fun guy.

Just took final and it was a little harder than first exams but still not bad. Professor Hamilton is funny. He makes the long class go by pretty quickly. You will need the book. Mine was an ebook.

Nice class. He encouraged a lot of discussion and tried to relate the course to our other course and the world today. I only asked for help a couple of times, and he was very pleasant and helpful. Funny too.

He is very clear in what he expects from each student for every assignment including the tests. You'll get an A as long as you take good notes in every class and follow his directions. His dry and subtle humor is also appreciated. This class is EASY!

We all respected him. He was so well prepared and had great stories from his experiences, as well as stories he wanted us to tell about the works. He does everything he can to help, whether it is for this class or another or something outside of SCAD. Not too many assignments. I really want to go to places we studied, now that I know about it

Professor was very knowledgeable. Course was good for a virtual coursereally just like a regular class. Hi did not bog us down with a bunch of online discussion boards like my other professors. Lectures were interesting. I met with him during office hours-very helpful.

Nice person. Knows the material really well and presents it in an interesting way. Normal amount of work. I think he made me realize that the course is useful, even though so am not an AH major. Pretty funny.

The lectures are him talking about different images, so it's important to pay attention and take good notes. We had quizzes on Fridays and you can't normally make them up, so that was hard for some people to remember. I emailed him a few times and he was really helpful and responded quickly.

jot down most of the information he says and I understand most of the material due to this. he doesnt assign a lot of work & his instructions are very clear! I believe the course is structured more like most academic classes as academic schools and isnt typically easy and thats why some students appear to have a lot of hate for him.

Professor Hamilton is a pretty straight forward person. If you pay attention in his class you will have no doubts about passing. I understand why some people don't like him but I feel it's because that got off to a bad start and were never able to recover

Brilliant person! He is approachable and funny in class, but he is passionate about the subject. He seems to have been everywhere we talk about so I have confidence in him. Some group projects in class, but grade is half assignments and half exams. Extra credit opps.

Great content and presented well. Lots of discussion, which breaks things up over SCADs really long class sessions. Good field trip. I learned a lot and am very satisfied.

This was a great course on the Pre-Raphaelites (ARTH713).They are super interesting. Loved the readings and discussions. Professor Hamilton took a lot of time to help me with my paper and it paid off. I am an illustration major and was worried that it would be all art history majors and I would feel lost, but he made it great for all of us.

I don't really get the hate for him. The class is lecture-heavy, but I found him pretty engaging for having him at 8:00 a.m. You will have to take notes in class because his slides normally only include pictures, but he emphasizes important points. He didn't take off points for an assignment when I had to go home for a funeral so that was nice.

His class is entirely lectures. If you can learn that way and are able to take thorough notes then you'll be fine! For those that struggle with lectures, he does offer extra help sessions via zoom that is like a quick recap of things from class. The only thing that I hated was that your graded by a couple things :/. Overall it's a okay class :)

Great professor! His teaching style is not for everyone, but if you take good notes, you should be just fine. Homework isn't much, just reading, and he provides a lots of ways to up your grade if you don't do well on quizzes. As long as you pay attention in the class, you'll be good.

Super qualified, it's great to have someone so knowledgeable teach but this course really depends on how much work you put into it. It's tough to know what he expects from an assignment through blackboard, you just have to be there and write notes. If he writes something on the board HIGHLIGHT IT! Knows so much about the things we studied. Really fun approach to teaching through stories and relating old art to the world we live in. Super nice and helpful. He stresses engagement, so all you really have to do is come to class wanting to learn!

Hamilton was a great professor!!! Don't listen to the bad reviews. We wrote a one page essay the whole quarter and one group assignment. He gives opportunities to increase your grade. I barely read the textbook and still got an A, you just need to study from your notes!! Everything on the test is from the notes.if you put in the work you'll be fine

Engaging lectures, though note-taking is key. Professor is knowledgeable, but class can be challenging. Utilize resources like study sessions and Unstuck study to prepare. Worth the effort if you're willing to put in the work.

I think too many people give him a hard time. He's a traditional professor. Yes the lectures are long and boring and his quizzes are a little difficult.The course itself is hard and you will not get a high grade if you don't study, I learned that myself. He is an amazing professor in that he is very aware that he is teaching something that most of his students find extremely boring; he makes class as engaging as a history lecture can be. Prof. Hamilton is great. Lectures are full of interesting stories about the art and architecture we studied. He doesn't just talk about ancient art. Relates it to today's world. Really interesting discussions, and he lets the students teach works from time to time, which helped me learn the material. I learned a lot about preparation. Very helpful
