His lectures are long, but tests are easy if you study a lot.

lectures form excellent notes, gives test questions ahead of time, good teacher
great lectures, go to class you will be fine
Excellent lecturer, no need for TEXT book.

Dude, this guy kicks ass. He is by far the best professor I've ever had.
Very helpful. Tests come straight from notes.
Excellent teacher, very clear. Funny lectures (dry humor). Take good NOTES.
Good lectures, take lots of notes, easy tests.
good lectures, take good notes, tests right out of notes fairly easy
Lectures are boring, but class fairly easy. I never took notes and got A easily
Awesome teach. Long lectures, easy tests!

if you go to class and take notes the tests are easy
very knowledgable in this subject, take notes, do the study guide, you'll pass!!
Go to class, take notes, don't read the text=A in the class.
nice guy, easy lectures, know your stuff for tests!!!
go to class and take good notes...do study guides and read novels...EASY!
SDSU's best, don't ask questions he is very arrogent but knows his stuff
Tests are straight from lecture. easy class and interesting too!
Very easy, don't miss a quiz - they are worth just as much as the midterms!
Smart Funny CLEAR but unpredictable grader

kickass teacher!dont buy book,GO TO CLASS!fav hist class so far!
good class, take notes. you do need the books. two essay tests, one book report. pretty easy going class
Really good teacher, arrogant to the extreme. You don't need to get the book, just take notes and study = A+
Very easy class if you take good notes and study. No need for textbook, tests are right from his lectures and the notes. Highly Recomended!
awesome class, i recommend it to anyone. i don't even like history and i loved this class. i learned a lot and it wasn't too hard. if you take it DON'T BUY THE BOOK! trust me.
easy to cheat, take notes and study a couple of days before the 4 tests and you'll get a good grade, buy the small books for somewhat difficult extra credit
Boring to go to class...sooo many notes! But make sure to take good ones because the tests are RIGHT from your notes. Gives essay questions before tests-easy to prepare. Don't buy books! Reading books are horribly boring..E.C is a lot of work.
he was interesting
a lot of notes, but he makes history interesting. I enjoyed it. Tests were easy. ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR A TEXTBOOK. Do not waste your money.
this guy has expansive knowledge in history. hes been everywhere and seen everything. At times he can be a little condescending but he is a fabulous professor. I highly recommend this class because it is interesting and enlightening
I thought his class was interesting. easy too. he gives you essay topics to study and half of them are on the test so you know exactly what to expect. I got an easy A.
just take notes
TAKE HIS CLASS, 2 midterms 1 final, great lecturer, don't buy the book, essay style tests, gives out 10 quest. study guide, only 5 quest. on test, provides answer sheets, no buying blue books, 1 nite/wk class always out by 9:15pm, do SG memorize ur answer
Hay is brilliant. He knows so much, and he's a fascinating teacher. When class was done I just wanted to go up and say, tell me the rest.
AWESOME TEACHER and cute too
He is a great teacher and very interesting... He is so smart and he doesn't teach above the class level. Great teacher definetely reccommend him!
One of my favorite professors ever. Extremely well-read, organized, succinct, with a powerfully dry wit to boot. Lectures are thoroughly engaging. Left classes wishing to know more.
great teacher. the guy is a smart ass and he constantly admits it. Actually, a funny guy and always makes smart ass remarks to ANYONE who asks a question. real comedy sometimes. the reading is not much, so just do it, and you will walk with an A or B!
TAKE HIM! great prof and u will learn a lot! lectures are very interesting, not boring at all! 2 exams,1 essay.Just memorize and write a coherent essay and u are good to go! Not bad looking either girls!
This is the best History teacher at SDSU. He knows everything. You will be amazed at how much you will learn in a semester. I would highly reccomend him for the Holocaust class. Write down everything he says becasue his tests are based out of the lectures.
class is the best. All his test is based on the lectures. You do have to get all three of his books. He has 2 exams and a essay. He tells you what is going to be on the test(He gives you the essay question, the word bank!!).
So im not the only 1 that thinks hes hot...take this class if you want to learn. Dr Hay make hist interesting. Wise ass attitude is so great. Recommended
SO easy.... He is extremely knowledgeable- he does a 2 hr 40 min lecture in our class without notes. Before the test he gives you 10 short answer q's as a study guide. 5 are the test q's. You know the test b4 hand. Dont by the big book. I got a 100%
dont buy book save money
great prof! interesting and knowledgeable...did i mention easy? he gives you the exam before hand so be sure to study lecture notes because everything is based on them.
awsome teacher...entertaining lectures...all tests are essay questions (that he gives you before hand)...no multiple guess:)
the sickest history teacher ever! my favorite class of all classes last year.... awesome teacher.. coolest guy ever... i wish i could grow up and be like mr hay... he's the sickest guy ever!!! i swear to god. Easy A, dont buy big book
If you want to learn something about history i strongly recommend you take this class. He is the best history teacher i have ever had and now i know all the things i never learned in highschool.
Everyone is right. Hay focuses on the stuff that doesn't get talked about, and it is really interesting. Take good notes, and don't buy the book. Ask a lot of questions.
The tests are easy. He gives you the questions you just have to memorize the answers. Don't buy the book! You will not need it. Just take notes in class and that's what the test is on.
Such a great teacher and easy. He is so hot, just look at those dimples!!
Highly recommend! Gives exam (10 questions) a week prior but only 5 of the questions are on test(3 tests). Great lectures! Easy A, just memorize questions. Need to read Candide and 1984.
This class is interesting and not that difficult. If you complete the study guide, you will do well on the test. His lectures are really good and he really has a grasp of the material.
He definitely knowledgable in history. He gets annoyed though if you come late to class or sleep and he'll call you out on it. Not an easy class if your a slacker.
VERY interesting and easy class.Material is really interesting, books are worth reading, and he gives a study guide with the actual exam questions a week in advance. There's a midterm,a paper, and a final but unless you go out of your way to do poorly, you'll do well.Highly recomemded!!!!!
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable. Keeps class interesting and fun. Has a dry sense of humor. Lectures from memory and very organized. Easy to takes notes from lectures. Study guide for all tests. Don't buy the book, you won't need it if you go to class. Favorite SDSU Prof.
Book not needed if you plan to go to class everytime. A little unapproachable and kinda makes you feel stupid if you ask a question he thinks is stupid. His lectures are easy to take notes from...plan on taking about 6 pages a night for once a week classes. Study guides given.
Dr. Hay is very good, class very organized. He teaches in ways to get you interested. Easy class, & you learn a lot. Cute too! Thos cute dimples! You'll enjoy going to class! Tests are exact same questions as in study guides. This was my favorite class and my favorite professor so far in SDSU!!
Don't try to leave his class early for ANYTHING! He will call you out on it. Your hand will cramp from taking notes the ENTIRE class period. Easy, but to be honest, it was a tough one to get through
Dr. Hay is a great professor. He lectures to the test. You must come to class to be able to pass. He gives great study guides and is very helpful. He keeps the class very interesting.
Probably one of the, if not, the best teacher I've had in 4 years of college. Just make sure you read the two novels he assigns, since you have to write a paper on them, and they're on the final.
Very good prof. Need to go to class to be able to do well on essay exams. Great teacher though and lectures are very interesting. You take a ton of notes in class. One essay paper on books about 5 pages. Not easy class but well worth it.
2 midterms and a final. They are written tests and he even gives you the questions before. Don't have to read any of the books, just come to class everyday and take notes. He's very organized and his lectures are easy to follow. This was definitely one of my favorite classes last semester.
Ok, i hate history i have always hated history. this was the best class i took all semester. he is a great teacher, very old school. go to the class and take good notes and you will do fine. he gives you the test questions before hand. I would recommend this class to anyone, VERY interesting
Best class I have taken at state. Hay is an old school style teacher, he talks, you write, but the subject matter is really interesting and he makes it very intriguing. Take lots of notes! The books have to be read but they are good and do not read like text books. Take this class it's worth it.
HAY IS AN EXCELLENT PROFESSOR, VERY FUNNY MAKES THE CLASS INTERESTING. GIVES YOU THE MIDTERM/FINAL QUESTIONS ALROUND GOOD CLASS
Prof Hay is the best teacher I've ever had. He knows a lot about history. He never had to look at his notes throughout his hour and a half lecture. If you like history and you are willing to read the book, then you don't have to go to the lecture. His tests are pretty easy, just be detailed.
Tons of notes! but talks slowly enought to take them. Timed writen tests, but he does give a list of possible ?'s that will appear on the test. You do need to study and read to do well. Interesting class.
I've never been afraid to walk out of a class until I met Prof. Hay! Never, Never walk out! Great teacher though, best class I've ever taken at state! Take lots of notes and always go to class.
Don't really understand how everyone says he is so good. Totally boring and doesn't make the subject-matter seem real. Too historical about it, and since it's the Holocaust, seems kind of insensitive. Really mean to students who walk out of class. Totally unclear as to how he grades papers, etc.
I don't understand Y people sayeasy. The subject is interesting.Lectures R cool but I studied hard and got a C on1st test.Unless he curves at the end he's not an easy grader. Was told tests were graded based on content but it was about syntax, sp, punc.what do you expect for a two hour long essay test
This class was so great. He gives you the short-answer questions ahead of time so you can prepare, and you get all the info to prepare for them from lectures. He is very nice about resched. tests. I really love this class- when I missed it I was actually bummed out.
excellent teacher. old school way of teaching, but his lectures are interesting enough that you don't take notes. if you go to class, you'll definitely do fine on the exams. there are only 3, and that's what your grade is based upon. definitely recommend.
he's alright. boring lectures. he talks, you write...every single class. write everything cause you won't be able to remember it by the time the test comes. you'll prob only be interested in the class if you like history already. the class is only made up of 3 tests totaling 100 points: 1st-30, 2nd-30, 3rd(final)-40. every point counts. easy B
Intersting lectures....gives u the questions to the test to study but they are essay questions and they are really hard to memorize and he grades really hard....Overall suggestion, Dont take this teacher!
Best professor I've had so far here. His textbook list was short and inexpensive. I learned more from this class than any others I've taken. Lectures were great and although subject was not easy to discuss, he conveys the trajedy without getting emotional. Tests tough but study guides covered everything to prepare, no surprises.
Guy is totally cool but may come off as an ass. He's funny and knows his stuff. Take lots of notes! But he gives you the final to take home and study then you are tested on the same material. a lot of crazy information too.
Prof Hay is an excellent history teacher!! Take him, but don't ever walk out of his class during his lectures. Just show up to class-take good notes, don't really have to read the book and you learn a lot in his class. Tests are in essay format.
You sit and take notes, he lectures every class. If you take good notes you can get an easy A. He gives you teh questions just memorize them for the test. Not a hard grader at all. Some of the lectures were interesting, though he is not.
Was a very interesting class very clear in the goal. Do not show up late or leave early though it does not go well. Other than that 2 tests one essay and a study guide telling you almost exactly what's on the test. Very easy I blew my chance for an A but the B+ came very simple.
Prof. Hay is a pretty laid back teacher. His lectures are somewhat interesting and old school, but his class isn't that hard. Be sure you know EVERY single question on the handout you get, or you won't get an A. each question on the essays that he gives you are like 6% of your grade, so if you don't know one, it's hard to get an A! great teacher
One of the best courses ever taken at SDSU! Very interesting and informative. Midterm and final are essay, but provided a study guide. A lot of lectures, be ready to take lots of notes if you intend on getting a good grade.
Cool teacher and very knowledable. Not too hard just go to class since he bases his tests off his lectures and not the book. He also gives the essay questions for his tests before so memorize these and you should be good. Good class to take. Also has extra credit at the end.
A great class -- a survivor came in to talk to us -- very moving.

he's very knowledgeable about the subject but it's the most boring class ever. he talks, you write...every single class. since he gives you the ?s ahead of time (10/11 & chooses 5/6 on the test day), write em up & ask him if he can check em/make comments for u before the test...it helps a lot! also, every pt counts..the class is only worth 100 pts!
Go to class, the lectures are very interesting. Harsh grader, but this class is worth the effort. Read, you'll have to write a paper on it.
Go to Class! No need to buy the textbook if you go to class. Two tests and one essay on the two reading books. He's a hard grader, sarcastic, and sometimes intimidating but he get easier if you go to office hours. He knows what he's talking about. Smart and good teacher. I got a B+ in his class.
This guy is GREAT! He made this class really interesting. I didn't want to take history at first, but if I have the opportunity to take a class with him again I'd do it without hesitation. Everything is based on the lecture so if you don't go to class, don't take him... but his lectures are really interesting.
This was my favorite class all semester. Prof. Hay is great - very sarcastic! Sad, but interesting topic that actually makes you want to go to class. Books are not too long, and they are good - grades a little on the tough side but what do you expect from an upper division class?! Great class!
the class is really interesting. all her does is lecture and you take notes, and you actually learn!! so go to class. he gives you the test questions prior to and picks 5 of them, so its really easy. he's a major prick, so dont do anything that he feels is disturbing. NO cellphones or bathroom breaks, or he WILL embarass you! bust he's super smart
With a little committment, it's an easy class. I never missed class once, took a disgusting amount of notes, and had almost 100% in the class. No need for the book, just try to write down practically everything he says. Hay is kind of a dick sometimes, but he's a nice guy if you ask questions.
Great class- he's a bit intimidating and dry but also interesting, clear, and a fair grader. Definetly recommended
He makes history so easy to understand and it is actually interesting (first time for me!) He has a great voice which makes it that much more easy and helps keep you awake. Take a ton of notes, but its worth it for the essay-tests (which you get the questions for ahead of time!)
He is an amazing professor, one of the best I've had at state. You take a lot of notes but it is always very clear.
There was a good deal of note-taking in this class, but if you just show up and do it, then study what you wrote, you'll do fine on the exams. Actually read the books and the analytical essay isn't too hard, either.
I learned so much in this class. His good lectures made the class time go by quickly. Take this class as a pass/no pass as the grading is almost imposable. After an entire semester I still don't know what he was looking for on his exam essays (six, one page essays per two tests) with a one 7 page paper. Don't take this if you need to graduate.

A decent teacher, but really not that great of a person. Makes fun of students in and outside of class. Does other things he shouldn't be doing (but can't be commented about here). A total flake.
Best prof I've had at State! I'm a science major but still loved the class and earned an A. Come to every class, DON'T be late, take notes and you'll do fine. I hardly had to study b/c his lectures are awesome and memorable. He's nice to look at too. :) Don't be a slacker and you'll do just fine.
Very intelligent man. Organized lecture, easy to understand, provide an interesting angle to the HOlocaust:) highly recommend
You will take note the WHOLE time you're in class. Interesting guy and really knows what he's talking about. As long as you put time and effort into your essays prior to the midterm you're golden. I got a C on my first midterm, but did well enough on the last two to pull off a B+.
Pretty simple class. The whole class is worth 100pts. 3 midterms,30 pts ea. All midterms are in essay form. Really simple bc he gives you the prompts ahead of time. To get an A: write down EVERYTHING he says, then repeat it on midterms. It's what i did and got an A. Take the once a week class if you can. EC offered towards end.
As long as you go to class and take notes you should do good in the class. he assigns 2 books that you have to read and anwser questions on. there are 3 tests and he gives you a study guide before each one.
Great teacher. He kinda taught from the text, but picks only the topics he finds relevant and speaks on those during class. Take good notes, and you'll do just fine. He really knows what he's talking about, and really enjoys teaching history, which makes his class a pleasure. He is somewhat monotone, but very clever. He keeps things interesting.
Great teacher. Really knows his stuff. If you want a good grade, attendance and notes are mandatory. However, what you will learn is worth it.
You need to get onto your notes right off the back when class starts, and be prepared to write a good 3 pages front and back of notes every day in class. Hay knows everything there is to ever know about history, and makes it interesting although he is very monotous. The whole class is based on a 100 point scale, so every point you lose is a percent
Hay is a great teacher he just talks the entire time and knows everything he is very knowledgable. Basically write down everything he says and make outlines for the tests and its a pretty easy class. He is a little intimidating because he is very sarcastic
By far the best teacher I have ever had!! Prof. Hay makes his class easy to pass with a A/B. Just make sure you don't miss any classes! Don't use the text book at all.
Great professor, and class is very easy if you goto every class. The midterms and the finals are all the same, you are given six essay questions to study and then on the exam there are three to respond on. If you like history at all you like this class
Best professor at SDSU...really! Extremely knowledgeable on the Holocaust. Be sure you go to class and read the required texts. Midterm and Final are essays...long essays, but fairly easy and one analytical paper, comparing 2 texts. An A or B is definitely posible. Highly recommended class, you will learn sooooo much!
Very cool teacher.. he's very talkative..a smart alek .. and you will take notes until your fingers fall off.. i didnt use my book at all and i got an A ...soo go to his office hours and take notes like there is no tomorrow..
I agree, the best professor at SDSU! Had him for 101 too. Extremely knowledgable, very clear but you will take a lot of notes. Lectures are interesting. If you are looking for an interactive, web/powerpoint multi-style teacher, he isn't for you. He is an old school, sit down, take notes, study and learn a bunch professor. Highly recommended!
If you're into teachers who lecture straight from a PowerPoint, don't take Dr. Hay. I love this class! The information is second nature to him. You're going to take lots of notes, and his exams are all essays, but if you go to class and actually listen, it's so easy to pass. This was my favorite class. Don't buy the book! You won't need it.
He is an amazing teacher, I love history even more after taking his class, he is very blunt and sarcastic. Take a lot of notes and always do the reading.
Easy if you go to every class but some amount of work. If you miss a lecture you miss a ton of info that will be on the tests. Tests are ALL essays and there are NO multiple choice. The book is useless if you go to the lectures. If you love history take Hay, if it's a required class and you have to take it, take someone else - it will be easier
i don't know what these people are talking about. his class was way too intense for a 100 level. lectures are boring and a TON of info. i would type 8 paged single spaced during each lecture. tests are all essay. gives you 6 in depth Qs a week before. he chooses 3 on the test. must answer all. ALSO 2 outside reading books.this should be a 300level
AWESOME professor. Definately try to get him if you can.
Excellent teacher and class (WWII). I recommend him to everyone because he is a great lecturer and he knows his material; answers all questions. Register early, classes are full. Grade based on book reports (2) and essay exams (2). Essays based on lecture, so go to all of them. History majors will love it even more.
dude if your going to take his class WW2 you must dig history.and if thats the case this class will be a breeze..2 essays and a midterm/final based on well essays, go to class and you wont have a problem
Great teacher, know his stuff. Go to class, and you'll do well. For a 400 level class, this was extremely easy. Lot's of in class work such as note taking, very little outside work. I got a B without even reading a word of the three books.
Awesome class!
amazing teacher. very knowledgeable on WWII. Very clear about what he wants and a GREAT lecturer. 2 Essays and 2 exams. Grades a little hard on Analytical essays so take your time on them. He's definitely the best teacher i've had at SDSU!
Class is very straight forward. You will take A LOT of notes, and all of it verbal lectures, but if you show up for class and study your notes, you don't even need the book. Tests are just 3 short (1-page) essays. Again, you study your notes, you pass. He's great.
Took his Holocaust class after having him for History106 because I liked him so much. Kind of dry and sarcastic at times so if you're easily offended chill out. If you have half a brain you'll pass the class. Got an A and put in decent effort to the essays and tests. If you go to class he says everything you need to know. No surprises.
I love MR. Hay! such a great teacher. my favorite teacher at state by far. I cant wait to take his other classes. He gives 3 tests and tells you the questions before. You will get an A if you just show up and take some notes. He makes history interesting and an A obtainable
This guy knows his stuff! He can be kind of monotone when he lectures but I've been so interested in he's lecturing on it didn't matter. Read the two essay books early on and take good notes and you'll do great!
Not my cup of tea, I guess... Maybe it's because I'm not a history major, but I found his teaching style/method to be unfavorable. He appears to be the kind of professor who simply wants students to repeat every word he says, like a mindless robot. I guess that's an easy A if you don't like having an opinion.
The class is interesting and he is very knowledge. Two book reports, but the books are good so its not hard. He says "Ummm" a lot which can be annoying, but its a good class.
Wow. I adored this teacher. I had little knowledge or interest in WWII history before this class, but his lectures had me enthralled! Tests are mainly from lecture material and the 2 supplementary texts (for the essays); the primary text is not nearly as in-depth as his lectures are. He does have a unique way of speaking. Take him! He's awesome!
I loved this class. It was so interesting and the professor is very well spoken. I never heard say 'uhm' once. He is witty, sarcastically funny, and presents the information well. Challenging, but not difficult. Write right and you'll do fine.
Hay is the man! I took this class out of interest and I was not disappointed. Hay is a great lecturer and not once did I see him look at his notes. Two exams and two papers that require you to think, but if you show up to class and read the relatively short books, you'll do fine. Very fascinating class and a great professor!
This was one of my favorite classes at sdsu. Hay knows soo much about the Holocaust and is not afraid to tell the gruesome realities of what really went on. You WILL take a lot of notes, but class goes by quick because it is so entertaining. I would have enjoyed the class more if this annoying d-bag in the front just shut up!
i've taken hay for HIST486 and for HIST512B, and would take him again if possible. he's an excellent teacher, and his lectures are clear and organized. He gives you the exam prompt a week before hand, and attendance is not mandatory, but prepare to take lots of notes. he's got a great sense of humor and his lectures are awesome. BEST TEACHER
Professor Hay made material come alive. His lectures are fun & interesting. He works himself harder than he does his students, but his students have to work to keep up with the exams and the additional reading. This was a great class and Hay is an outstanding, knowledgeable professor. I recommend him to everyone.
He is a very smart man. Knows a lot about history. Lectures pretty much the whole time off the top of his head so be ready to furiously scribble down notes! 3 exams that consist of 3 essays you write in class. gives you the essay prompts ahead of time. Pretty simple class.
This guy is strange. He is funny, but comes off as an intellectual snob. He speaks like a Southern Baptist preacher. He knows history very well, and makes it sound interesting, as it should. You will take TONS of notes, but the tests are fair, but you have allot to remember. I'm very glad I took this class, and I'm fairly lazy. Good guy.
Awesome class. grade breakdown is 15% paper, 30% midterm, 15% paper, and 40% final
MUST GO TO CLASS IN ORDER TO PASS !!! although class is not mandatory his lectures are extremely important. all you do is listen and write down as much as you can. He tells you EXACTLY what is on the midterms its all essays. hes really helpful if you go to his office hours before test. if your good at going to class and taking notes take this class
rude and snobby. though the class isnt awful to get through. i suggest you type your notes ..dont try asking the other class which questions are on the test sometimes theyll be the same sometimes they wont. MUST GO TO CLASS. Must be a decent writer and able to do alot of busy work in order to compile work together to write the essays
Awesome professor, awesome class. Take good notes, review the important dates/events for exams, read the books for the essays and you'll be fine. World War II has always been an interest to me and I feel like I walked away with a lot of new knowledge. Hay doesn't BS you and doesn't take BS either, hence why some may call him rude, but he's the man!
Hay did an amazing job teaching a very difficult subject - the Holocaust. He is knowledgeable, entertaining, professional and appropriate. 440 had two papers and two tests. The tests are all essay questions given ahead of time and easy to prepare for. The essays were super short and on fascinating books, though this is coming from a History major.
Loved this professor! You really learn everything leading up to the holocaust, his style takes getting used to, but after the first week he really proves he knows his stuff. Outside reading books were great, attendance mandatory, probably my favorite class I've taken at SDSU! Grade based on 2 midterms, one final, 2 outside books to write essays on.
Great professor. Very clear on what he wants. LOTS of notes in class. Don't bother with the text book, we never used it. 3 essay exams are tough but if you take great notes and study you'll do fine.
Hay's classes are always interesting and fair. Take good notes, read the books, and write strong essays and you'll come out fine.
Amazing. Lectures are engaging and clear and the information given is directly on the tests. We had three tests, three essays each, out of 6 possible prompts given before the test. If you read the book (get an older edition than what he requires)before the tests and write down what he said in the lecture you will do well. BEST PROFESSOR AT STATE!
Modern Europe Class. Excellent speaker, delivers interesting lectures with great clarity. Makes material come alive with interesting facts, anecdotes and humor. Helps retain important material. Among the best instructors at SDSU and I recommend him to everyone, particularly those interested in history. He is an outstanding professor.
Holocaust class. His lectures are crystal clear, though he does speak a bit fast. Take your laptop to take notes with. Exams are just like the study guides. The reading assignments are very interesting.
Brilliant! He is a genius and highly recommended. Text is an overview of the course with two supplemental readings that require an analytical essay for each. Do not be rude and disrupt class by walking out (for any reason) during lecture or he will call you out. Best Professor at San Diego State!
Very clear and concise. Doesn't bull**** you with a bunch of useless info. Tells you what you need to do to pass the class.
I'm not usually a fan of those who talk ALL class long but he is actually pretty interesting. Class isn't mandatory unless you have someone to give you notes. Didn't really need the book and couldn't sell it back for any money so don't buy it. 3 midterms with 3 1-page essays - if you figure out what to write they're easy!! TAKE HIM!
Wow I don't know how this site has so many good reviews for this guy. Everyone I knew in that class didn't really like him. Really boring lectures to sit through. The midterms are 3 in class essays so if you like that then this is the class for you. In my opinion the worst history professor I've ever had.
I'm not usually a fan of those who talk ALL class long but he is actually pretty interesting. Class isn't mandatory unless you have someone to give you notes. Didn't really need the book and couldn't sell it back for any money so don't buy it. 3 midterms with 3 1-page essays out of 6 possible given on the study guide. TAKE HIM!
he lectures the whole class period but he is actually pretty interesting & is super knowledgable. attendance isn't mandatory but the notes are what the tests are based off of. 2 essays so make sure to buy those books [short 200 pagers]. GREAT class!
Great teacher. Lectures the whole class. Only 3 essay exams and 2 reading assignments. Simple class and interesting teacher.
He lecutred the whole class but usually let out 5-10 min early. Really knowledgable guy, and always calls people out who are ditching his class or coming in late which I think is funny.
The guys an A** but I only really thought about this class 4 times the whole semester twice when the 2 papers were due and twice before the 2 tests Lectures the whole time which gets annoying by the end of the semester although some of it is interesting. Pretty stress free overall I used the book as a supplement however most people didn't read it.
Incredibly interesting lectures, very knowledgeable professor. He takes an incredibly complex series of events and breaks them down and paints a clear precise picture of a monumental cataclysm. Highly HIGHLY recommend this class for all, even non-History majors!
very interesting! great class
Took professor Hay 4 times because he was hands down my favorite professor I have ever had. So interesting, the only person I've ever met who can keep your attention for an hour and fifteen minutes by his lectures. Extremely knowledgeable and structures his class for all his students to succeed. TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM!!!
Lectures the whole class time. I found out it was useful to record his lectures and listen to them a few times before the tests. Test are essay format. Gives you 6 essay questions to study before test. He picks 3 to test you on. Relatively easy grader. Pretends to be a mean guy, but is actually very approachable.
When I first sat down in this class, I was thinking this guy is a sarcastic jerk with a monotone voice; how am I going to survive 3 hours of this? I was very wrong. His lecturing style definitely grows on you and he is very clear. He seems mean, but he is very approachable and nice if you talk to him.Take his night class, gets out early!DONOTNEEDBOOK
Funny teacher, you would never think someone knows as much as he does about history. Pay attention to class you can't get lower than an A- if you can't get a passing grade than you need to go back to highschool
Simply put, Prof Hay is the man. Second time taking him and I'm bumed he's not teaching any classes I need next semester. Very Clear, concise prof who is very nice in person. I laugh at how he calls out talkers and people getting in late or leaving early. Favorite Prof @ SDSU TAKE HIM
Prof Hay is an awesome teacher. Ive never had an interest in history until I took this class. He makes his lectures so interesting. Midterms are super easy, he gives you six essay topics ahead of time and for the test he makes you write an essay on three of them. try to attend class, his lectures are important. I highly recommend taking his class.
You can tell that Hay really knows and likes his material. Classes are mostly just lecture, but he makes his lectures interesting. 2 papers and 2 essay tests, that's your grade. Recommend, really good teacher.
The subject was very interesting, but his teaching was OKAY.Definitely not the "best." He grades harder on the take home essays then on the midterm and final. He doesn't use blackboard so you have to meet with him to keep track of your grades and to find out how you can improve cause his comments on the papers don't help at all.
Great teacher. He has a very particular style of teaching but it grows on you. He prepares you completely for each exam and the essays are fairly straight forward. I recommend going yo class not just because you will need all of the information but also because it is so interesting! My favorite teacher/class.
Hay is pretty cool. He's funny and kind of a jerk at the same time. Doesn't use blackboard, and goes over the subject REALLY fast because there's a lot to cover in a short span of time. I took notes on my laptop, even though he called out laptop users almost every class because he thought people weren't listening. Like I said, he's a jerk too.
Monotone and boring because he lectures whole class. Nice guy who is pretty funny during lecture. 2 books + 2 assignments and 3 easy essay midterms where he gives u 6 q's to study from and picks 3. Ended up with a B after forgetting to do both assignments which were 5% each. Recommend him
One of my favorite professors at state. If you have a good sense of humor and enjoy sarcasm you'll love him. Throw some names and dates into your tests and you should get an A. I only wish his class had been twice a week instead of once!
best professor at sdsu. i wish he taught all of my history classes. if you say he's boring, you're probably one of those idiots who never listens. great professor. can't stress that enough. highly recommended. seriously the coolest guy ever.
love this professor so much. i really wish his class was more than once a week though. he's really educated on his topic and it shows through his lectures.
seriously the BEST professor at sdsu. i've taken him so many times. he is just a really great professor and totally approachable. seems like a hardass, but he's really nice. and he's silly and cute :)
I LOVE PROFESSOR HAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor Hay is an incredible teacher and a cool guy to talk to at office hours. I've taken his classes just for fun and have loved all of them. He has a very unique teaching styl and keeps your interest the whole time. My favorite prof at SDSU. I'm gonna be bumemd when I can't take hsi classes anymore.
Love this guy! He's funny and has a unique lecturing style that keeps you interested. He's straightforward about what he wants from students, so pay attention and you'll do fine. His lectures were so thorough that I hardly used the book to study at all, just my notes from class. He's really a great professor and I enjoyed his class.
there once was a professor who was the best professor on earth. his name is jeff hay and he teaches at sdsu. this professor is so good. i am so sad that he isn't teaching any more classes in history. i really wish he taught ALL of my classes, i'd get an A in them all. highly recommended. he's brilliant.
the.best.professor.on.earth. take him. i love professor hay!
EASIEST CLASS YOU WILL EVER TAKE IN YOUR WHOLE LIFE! YOU DONT NEED TO READ THE BOOK. the class consists of three midterms, each consisting of 6 essay questions he gives you before the test and he will choose to give you three of them on the test. so it's basically answering the question beforehand and memorizing the hell out of it before the exam.
Hay is a great lecturer. Format for course is 2 essays based on books, a midterm and a final which he provides the essay prompts for ahead of time. Great class but my only complaint is that there is just so much to cover & studying for the final can he hectic due to the amount of content. Highly recommend.
Excellent professor, his knowledge is 2nd to none on the Holocaust. Some peeps say a tough grader, however, I didn't have an issue (got As on the midterm and papers). His dorkieness is cute, as well as his dimples. And I can listen to him talk German all day. Advice: Be as detailed as possible, he love 'em in the writings.
He was one of the most interesting professor at state. Attending class is mandatory if you don't want to read the book. The 2 other books are necessary for the analytical essays. If you pay attention and use a google doc to answer the question for his exams then you should be ok. Got an A.
Great amazing teacher. He speaks in a way that makes it very easy to take notes. However, the class is not easy. You must take notes to do well on the essay exams and read 2 books for book reports. I really enjoyed the class but for an upper GE I wouldn't take it again.
LOVED the teacher, he has a very dry sarcastic sense of humor yet funny. you take notes off of what he says. interesting subject and prof knows A LOT about it. 1 midterm exam where he gives you 6 prompts and he chooses 4 then you write about 3 of them. 2 easy papers on class books. 1 finals same format as the midterm just longer. would recommend!!
Hay is an amazing professor this was by far the best class I was in..I even brought one of my visiting friends to sit in on it. He lectures in the most interesting way and grades very fairly.
Took him for holocaust. Very interesting subject. However, he is never clear on what he wants on essays. If you don't have the writing style he preferred, you will get a lower grade. I studied my butt off and wrote everything i can remember on it and got a worst grade than a person i know that didn't study or read. they just wrote the way he likes
This guy is awesome! He is so knowledgeable about the subject and is hilarious. He's such a great prof that I'm signed up for another class of his this upcoming semester. Don't need to read the textbook, I didn't and got an A. BUT you HAVE to attend the class to really get the info though he doesnt take attendance. TAKE HIM!!
Amazing teacher, very Knowledgeable. Expect your hand to cramp from notes but, the information he gives is great. I had him for two classes. Received an A in both. Attend class, take solid notes and the class will be a breeze. He is funny and very engaging. The WW2 and Holocaust classes from him are a must for any history fan
if you care about logical grading.....Hay is not your friend. He rarely gives back assignments.... if ever and the final grade is a HUGE surprise. Its his way or the highway.
Dr. Hay freakin rocks. Love him! 2 papers, 1 exam, 1 final. Really to pass his class just keep things straight and to the point in papers, and do some light research for the exams. He's a sweetheart once you get past the tough Great Wall of China exterior. Helpful at office hours, but don't expect the answers; he'll provide the cookie trail.
Professor Hay is very knowledgeable about the Holocaust. Class lectures were interesting to learn. I like his personality. He is approachable if you have any questions or concerns. 3 Exams and 1 easy paper. I definitely recommend him to everyone who is interested in learning about the Holocaust!
He tested completely on the lectures and on the novels. Nothing from the textbook was necessary. I found him straightforward and clear. Just take good notes or record the lectures and you will do fine.
Class is not mandatory, lectures entire class time, no power points must listen and type along with him. Study guide consists of 5-6 questions with multiple questions within. Exam has only 3 questions that are identical to study guide, random facts and dates help on exam. Interesting class, but memorization is key to pass the exams!
This class is as straight forward as it comes. I would bring my laptop in while he lectured and wrote down everything that he talked about. Then when it came down to the exams, you can write exactly what he taught. As long as you attend the lectures its an easy A/B
GREAT LECTURER. HE SPEAKS LIKE A US ARMY COLONEL, BUT HE IS THE BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR I EVER HAD. DONT PISS HIM OFF TALKING OR LEAVING THE CLASS BECAUSE HE WILL MAKE SURE EVERYONE KNOWS YOU ARE DISTURBING OR LEAVING THE CLASS. HE IS THE BEST THOUGH. REMIND ME OF DR. HOUSE.
Writes an outline and key terms on the board before each class. He doesn't use power points, which made paying attention easier. I say skip class and you won't pass, only because he lectures on exactly what he wants on the tests. Hardest part was the analytical essays. Take good notes and you'll do fine. I really enjoyed him as a professor.
Best professor I have ever had! He is witty, yet so interesting, He lectures the whole time so be prepared to take notes I learned so much from this class. Although he talks the whole time, he is straightforward with his lectures. Also I recommend having a study group before exams to answer all the questions. I did that and got a A- in the class.
One of my favorite teachers. He was extremely thorough and lectured for 2 12 hours every class, but it was hardly ever boring. I would type every word he said and then when it came to the tests regurgitate it all. I actually retained the information rather than just forgetting it 2 months later. He is a great teacher, I would totally recommend him
if possible you should not go to restroom during lecture since he does not want us to bother his lecture. there are 3 or 4 exams. he gives prompts in advance maybe week before exam. you choose 3 out of 4 questions on exam. write one page and half per every question. easy pass but tough to get A.
There are only 3 tests and 2 assignments the entire semester, so not a super heavy load. However, his tests are pretty brutal and lectures are very long. You must go to basically every lecture to get the material you need. But one good thing is that he really knows his stuff and is not disoriented like many other teachers at state.
Class was interesting. Since there was only one class a week, the lectures were really long. Use the restroom before and during the break because if you get up during his lecture he will call you out. Two book reports (Half the class doesn't read the books) and two in class essays consisting of multiple prompts. I don't think he curves.
Professor Hay is the best lecturer I have had at SDSU so far! He knows what he is talking about and makes the lectures worth listening to. Each tests consist of 3 essays. You get 6 of the prompts before the test and 3 of them are randomly chosen. If you take good notes and go to class you'll do fine! It also helps if you write the essays before.
I've taken just about every class Hay teaches. His lectures are informative and you need to be there for them (or read the chapter from the textbook if you miss). He'll call you out if: you're a ghost, you constantly come in late or leave early. Only issue I had was grading. I'd get A's or B's in other classes on my papers, but B's and C's on his
I am currently in professor Hay's class and LOVE the class! When I first met Hay I was extremely skeptical and HATED the first class, especially after reading his reviews. However, the class and his lectures have quickly become some of my favorites! He only assigned 2 homework assignments, which were ridiculously easy, and 3 exams.
Lectures are long but he makes it interesting. He does not use blackboard, powerpoint or anything of that sort just writes an outline and key words on the board and goes from there. You really have to pay attention in this class but if you write down everything and then look over it later you'll be fine. Must read the books for the analytical essay
Lectures are long monologues but contain everything you need to get good grades. Get ready to write tons (outlining helps). If you miss class - make sure you get notes or you will fail. Tests are bluebook, 3 short answers (1-1.5 pages per question) out of 5, you get the questions beforehand. One paper (requires reading 2 books). Tough as GE.
Absolutely love Hay! I have never in my life enjoyed a history class & his class ended up being my favorite of the semester. Not a class for people who don't go to class because he doesn't do powerpoints or blackboard. If you write down everything he says, the tests are crazy easy. 2 midterms, 1 final, 2 other easy assignments. I'm taking him again
He has the most monotone voice I have ever heard. I never drank coffee before but I always did before his class. Despite that, his lectures were somewhat interesting. Can be kind of a jerk to people, especially if you get up to go to the bathroom or seem to not be paying attention to him. Pee before class!
Going to class is a must, but his lectures go by fast. He gives you the essay prompts for the test ahead of time so there is no reason you can't do well unless you aren't putting in any effort. I didn't have to spend too much time studying, not a stressful class. He is very understanding if you talk to him ahead of time.
Professor Hay was actually one of my favorite teachers! At first I was hesitant about him, but he is so intelligent that he makes the lectures interesting! I am not a history person but after him I feel like history actually retained with me from his classes, unlike other history teacher where I don't remember a thing after the semester!
You don't necessarily need to go to every single class, but his lectures, and lectures are the only things he does, cover most the material you need for the essays and exams. He is very down to earth and easy to work with.
Write down everything he says during lecture and you'll do well on the exams. He posts 6 of the exact same test questions online and picks 3 of them to be on the actual exam. Easy class if you put in the effort. You'll only need the textbook if you're planning to skip class, otherwise you don't need it. He's a great professor overall though.
Difficult class for a gen ed, lecture heavy, but everything you need for the tests he WILL go over in his lectures. Take really good notes, and ask if you need help, he's very supportive.
Professor Hay manages to make lectures interesting and intriguing, first history class i've ever enjoyed. 3 essay tests, which he gives the prompts for beforehand and 2 reading assignments. Doesn't take attendance, but you need to go to class as he lectures exactly what is on test and doesn't put anything online. Overall a great teacher and class.
By far the most interesting class I have taken at state and it is taught by the most amazing and respected professor! He is super smart and knows that he is talking about. It is a lecture heavy class, but the way he gives information is like he's telling a story that never gets boring. Learned so much and really appreciated being taught by him.
Simply the best purveyor of information I've ever been privileged to experience. Professor Hay brought the subject of the Holocaust alive in a way that indelibly imprinted our minds & hearts concerning a subject that needs to be part of any informed 21st century student. Clear and succinct in his delivery; inspirational, gems of info each lecture.
I would recommend taking hay you have 3 in class writing test and 1 writing assignment he's a understanding teacher that is good at what he lectures he doesn't go up there and talk about nothing it's very important to go to lectures
This was his last semester before retirement, so not much use reviewing him. His class was 100% quizzes and essay exams. The quizzes were tricky, but at least we could prepare well for the essay exams by doing a Google Docs study guide. He seemed shy, awkward, and monotonous at the start, but got confident and funny as time went on.
The problem with this class is that it is only out of 100 points. Two 5 point assignments that you must read both texts to complete. along with 3 30 point essay exams. He gives the exam questions a week before the test. overall a very interesting class.
Even though he is retired now, Hay was amazing! Go to class and read the required material and youll pass. A nice tip to pass all of his essays (exams) is to prep the week before by doing practice papers. The more detailed the better. Memorizes some dates and names and youll get an A.
Amazing teach. A little monotone, but great sense of humor. He is very knowledgable and approachable. Would take another class from him.
