Hard but fair. I would recommend him. He is an excellent teacher.
Good teacher. His course requires a lot of work.
Awesome professor. Hard, but fair. Clear and precise. If you can succeed in his classes, you shouldn't be in college!!
Easy class, friendly prof..uses slides from book, which are also online...exams are m/c and essay, gives youpool of essay Qs...no attendance policy except on presentation days (its helpful to go to class though), very strict APA style grading...
I hated this teacher. He was so anal, it's not even funny. He was rude to me when all I did was ask him a question, the whole class was all about him and how great he was for getting through Grad school. I honestly thought that his stories were all pretty lame and not helpful. Do not take him
very helpful
Tough but fair. 5 projects and they are very time consuming but if you simply follow his directions you will get an A. Only 2 tests & no book to buy. He is full of great stories about his career and that keeps the class interesting. If you want to really learn something & be entertained, take him.
cutie and super smart and interesting.... take this class!
maybe it is the class taught, Careers in Psych, but I am now motivated. Take him... he is the way you were supposed to be.
excellent teacher, and very helpful
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is so hard. Way too anal and all about himself. He needs to get off his high horse!
Just overall not a nice person to listen to. Most of the class was about how much being a psychologist sucks.
He is very tough. Expects a lot of work

I took him for abnormal psyc. He is brilliant and worth taking but don't expect an "A".
Nice guy. You do learn a lot of great info. There are 5 projects. Projects can be time consuming but they aren't hard, just read the directions carefully. It's not a bad class at all. I definitely recommend it.

Dr. Helms is one of those professors you have a love/hate relationship with. I hate how much I have to work in his class, but I absolutely love how much I'm learning from him. He is a pretty hard professor, but ridiculously helpful at the same time. I like having a professor that will push me to see just how much potential I have.
he does give a very clear sylabus but do not expect an A for fulfilling his requirements. he is overly particular about format even when he fails to specify what he wants for an assigment. only 2 tests. do not expect an A. he believes his sylabus is a one-way contract and is not willing to negotiate a grade even if you have a valid argument...
VERY STRICT GRADER... but he tells you EXACTLY what he wants. If you get an A in his class you know you have earned it. Hilarious but tough.
he is the most degrading professor i have ever had. he goes out of the way to tell you that you can't succeed. he is super detail oriented and the tiniest error loses major points. the assignments have potential to be helpful, but end up feeling like busy work. there are too many minutia details in the assignments. i will never take him again.
Don't expect anything from Helms. He is not trying to teach anyone. The average on the first test was a 64% which he says is higher than his usual first test. Take someone else.
This professor expects alot of his students, this is not a course to take for fun! I learned alot and enjoyed his teaching, but I highly recommed studying and taking a 3000 level Psych course before this one!
The most challenging teacher I have ever had, but also the best teacher I have ever had. You really have to work in his class, but you learn alot. His expectations are high but he is available to help. Precision couts!! He comes off a bit gruff in the beginning, maybe even intimidating, but he was so funny and helpful when you ask for it.
Straight up. He is very picky but once you figure his grading out he is fairly easy. I found his class very helpful and he is VERY entertaining. Would take his class again.
He appears to be a pathological liar, has a god complex and is completely full of himself; not to mention it made me want to retch just to look at him much less listen to him ramble on. Though to his credit, we had endless fun making fun of him. Save yourself and your sanity, take someone else.
Those who have complained about Dr. Helms, obviously did not try and do not know how to follow directions. Come on people, grow up. This is not high school! If you follow his syllabus exactly, you will be fine, he is VERY picky. Just do what he asks and you will make a decent grade. Easy B with a little effort. If you want an A, just do a little more!
It was a helpful class. It got kinda boring after a while cause he said the same stuff over and over. He's very picky and tedious over his grading of the assignments, prepare to spend some time on them, but they're easy. Doesn't require attendance, but it's helpful.
very, very cocky and disrespectful towards students. he makes you feel stupid. the tests are easy if you attend class.every class. he will make you cry.
He is an interesting funny teacher. Lectures are boring at times but I took a 3 hour class... His tests are all multi true/false questions. They are very straightforward but he throws in very stupid questions: what color is the psychology sign-up for advisement sign....Very strict detailed grader on the assignments.
Great Prof! I had him for Careers and it sucked. He doesn't seem to like teaching the class. I took him again for Juvenile Forensic Psych and it was awesome. He is very knowledgeable and he seemed happy teaching it. I recommend if you have to take Dr. Helms, take him for an upper level course.
Great instructor, I took him for intro to juvenile forensic psychology and he was really helpful. The presentations were pretty intense, but other than that, the class was pretty easy and straight forward.
This professor has but one goal, to get you to drop out of this class, and to make sure no one pursues a degree or career in psychology. He believes himself to be the only one worthy of this distinction. If you have a desire to be berated, beaten, and begiled then you can choose this professor or better yet, use the money for therapy.
This is the most straight forward class i have ever taken. On the first day you know exactly what will happen ever day for the rest of the year, he tells you word for word what do do on ever assignment and if you show up take notes and pay attention you will finish the tests in a mater of minutes. The teacher is not all that bad either
Most people either love or hate him. He is very picky, especially on essays questions and the paper, but if you study and take precise notes you can get an A in this class! Use the book companion site to study for MC and memorize the potential essays by heart. He's a very funny prof with awesome stories!
Helms uses his ego to make you look like little children. his basic teaching process is that you are all going to be psych majors. if you pay for this class, go buy a prescription of vicodin.
I had him for General Psych and Careers. PAY ATTENTION TO HIS RULES! Pay attention, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS, study--you should do well. He is very passionate, intelligent, and VERY straight-forward. Some may find him intimidating, but don't be afraid to ask questions b/c he will answer fully. He is also hilarious! (And hot)
Dr. Helms is the most straight-forward professor you will ever meet. He has a 24 page syllabus and if you can READ and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS you will make an A. He is also always availible to look at your work before its due, I would DEFINATELY recommend meeting with him! Tests are tricky but again, meet with him! Once you get to know him, he's cool.
Dr. Helms seems to get some sort of pleasure out of nailing students to the wall. He's degrading and acts very high and mighty. He even locked a student out of the online class because the poor guy turned in an assignment incorrectly. Do yourself a favor-don't waste your money. Take someone else, unless you are a masochist. And yeah, he's hot.
Find a different class. He has lost all feeling that is left in his heart. He is very smart, and he will make sure you know this.
I really didn't think he was that bad. In fact, he was pretty hilarious at times. Yes, you have to take the exams seriously and study a lot. Yes, he's sarcastic and snippy. But you're not there to fall in love with him. Pay attention in class, study for the exams, and it's a fairly easy B.
I'm not going to lie at first I thought he was a jerk, but then as the class went along I saw where he was coming from. He really is a great Professor and very helpful. Very Straight forward Assignments are helpful. I got an A easily because I studied and followed directions, which is what we are supposed to do! Take him!!
He teaches out of the book and tells stories that I found helpful when studying. His ego is a little much though. Almost everyday he makes it clear how much more knowledge he has than us.It's hard to raise your hand to ask a question b/c he will laugh in your face. A huge distraction is how much he says "uh" and "um". Think before you schedule him!
He is alright. Easily distracted/ will call you out in front of everyone. The tests are extremely hard. There are 13 tests overall every friday. The class ends 2 or 3 weeks early.Six activity days & he won't tell u what day they will be so go to class. U have to complete a research project to. These are very easy grades!
Very nice guy. Loved taking his class. His tests are hard at times, but are online! You can use textbook/notes on tests but it is timed. DO NOT USE EACH OTHER, he is very hard on cheaters. Learned alot of outside materials in his class, he made the class fun to take. Get out of class two weeks early +, and also drops lowest test! Great guy.

I found him to be extremely arrogant.Do not take on-line tests with anyone else. He considers this cheating and will make the entire class miserable as a result.Very knowledgable.Does not respect his students.Study giudes he gives are very helpful.Test are challenging but not impossible.Class attendance is not mandatory.
DO NOT take any online class with him. He humilates you and makes you feel like a stupid if you ask a question. He feels so superior to everybody and like to use this aspect all the time to kick you! He never trusts you, never answers your questions willingly, never respects you and never counts you as a good, smart or worthy student.
Very sarcastic and rude at the same time. If you're a texter, don't take his class (he WILL call you out and ask you to leave). Gets distracted easily. Tests were online, 25 questions, and had a time limit. Used the book, study guide book, outline in class, and online resources to pass the tests and end up with a B in the class.
Horrible, horrible, horrible. He expects perfection, but does not even give clear directions. I agree, he does seem to have a superiority complex. My research methods class is easier than my careers class. How does that make sense? Don't take him! ALOHA
He is terrible. If you are looking for an arrogant and rude professor, he is your man. His class is ridiculously hard. Do NOT take him.
This is the worst prof. ive ever had. If u want to fail take him. His grading in out of control and the only way you will pass the class is if everything you do is perfect in every way.
Sarcastic, rude, useless, vindictive. Helms wants you to fail. No matter what you do, do not expect to make better than an 80. Straight A students fail his class. This class will make you suicidal.
Okay, yes Dr. Helms is pretty difficult and he is a little stuck up, but he knows what he's talking about. If you're lazy and just want an easy A, then don't take him, but if you want to learn a lot, then he's a great professor. Also, he's always willing to help and talk to students, so if you are struggling I would recommend doing that.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS!!! He is very degrading when you try to communicate with him and not very helpful. He knows his stuff and is a very tough grader.
Dr. Helms is a great professor, but he has a reputation of being a hardass. Here's the key to getting an A; just DO WHAT HE SAYS. It's that simple. Don't text in class, don't cheat, and make an attempt to help yourself before you ask him for charity in class (this may involve grades, questions about material, etc.). You can't half-ass this class.
He is so patronizing! I questioned a grade and he told me I was lucky that he didn't go back and lower my grade because he found another error! I've rec'd A's on all of his quizzes (mult. choice), but any writing assignment he picks apart so there is no way to get an A in his class. And I have everything proofread by an online service!
He is very smart and arrogant but he knows what he's talking about. He has very high expectations, but he should in an upper level class. Abnormal psych is very interesting and he makes sure to be thorough in his explanations. DO NOT take him for careers. He seems to hate teaching it and is not very nice. I have to retake it and it will NOT be with him again.
Aloha. This guy is a joke. I his online class for Careers in Psychology. He is more interested in letting everyone know how smart he is rather than teaching you anything. Make sure you memorize the psychology professor's resumes...seriously. Also, don't bother buying the textbook (which is his of course) he posts the same info online.
I had his careers class online. I am a good student who studies hard, but this class felt impossible. The worst is the writing assignments. He'd give you a grade and tell you that you made comma errors, word choice errors, ect., but he wouldn't tell you where they were, so you can't really fix them for next time. All around annoying class.
I assumed the prior posts were people being picky. NOT THE CASE. His condescending arrogance is offensive. I could deal with this were it not for his ridiculously rigorous effort to prevent students from achieving an A. He counted off on some students' posts (online class) because they did not refer to a professor as "Dr." B- is the norm. A is rare
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MAN! First, let me start by saying never in my entire collegiate career have I failed a course! That was not the case for this class. He is absolutely horrible. His condescending and belittling remarks are hardly constructive! He enjoys putting others down with his "intelligence". unfair grading. Save yourself the stress.
Seemed like nice enough guy, but his assignments were not clear about what he wanted to see, and he was very unhelpful. the school didn't pay the psych lab to teach me they paid him. Any question you had he diverted to someone else. I say don't take anything online with him, maybe he is better in a classroom setting.
You better master your APA before taking this guy. Big time nit-picker. He is definitely one of a kind!
This guy wrote the text book, so he knows it word for word. You better learn it word for word too because he picks out the most minute details (e.g, mostly, maybe, perhaps) for the multiple choice answers. Dot your i's and cross your T's for the essays or you lose 10 - 20 points each. Good luck!!!!
This is a low level class, but this guy makes it feel like a PhD course. He tries to brainwash students into believing that his toughness is for their own good. Everything people are saying about him is true, but you can go find out for yourself.
He was extremely nice and helpful. I took online class. The assignments were detailed and time consuming, but very do-able. The quizzes were taken exactly from the powerpoints, usually word for word. Easy class, very helpful professor.
While Dr. Helms' class is no picnic, if you can follow directions, you'll do fine. He can be anal about some of the little things so make sure you DO them, not hard, just little things most overlook. He teaches right out of the book, so I suggest you read it.
I've taken Dr. Helms three times,so I can vouch for his teaching style.Let me preface by saying that I am not a 'A' student. What I learned about Dr. Helms is that he is fair.Do the work and put forth the effort to produce quality and you will pass.Additionally, you LEARN when you take his classes.Don't believe the negative hype.
The class is okay but it is not fair at all. There claimed to be several points bring your grade up but this is a very false statement. If you have to take this professor beware. A class that would seem or appear simple can become so hard with the grading skill he uses. I would just find another professor.
I recommend taking Dr Helms online Careers class. The textbook is NOT necessary, he put all the info on ppt. You will need to thoroughly read the material before taking the test which is 25 questions in 20 mins. A total of 8 tests, a final, 2 assignments, & two discussion posts=easy A. Read the ppt thoroughly & you will get an A.
Dr. Helms' online Careers class is awesome. His assignments and exams are not that bad as long as you study prior to taking the exams or quizzes. He is very helpful if you simply ASK HIM. Every time I had a problem or was unsure about something, I emailed him and would get a response within the hour. Do your work and don't be lazy. It's that simple
For those of you who have taken Careers in Psych, remember how we have to memorize the psychology department professors and their degrees? Well, Dr. Helms is the "coordinator" for this class, and he thinks this is necessary. Surfs (pretty arrogant sport, even Jesus only did it once), teaches from a book he wrote, smarter than everyone. Enough said.
Horrible professor to take an online course with. 20 minutes to complete a 25 question test! Test questions come straight from the power point but are extremely random. Avoid taking this professor online!
Had him for a hybrid class. Arrogant man, thinks he his better than everyone, and if you disagree with him, you're "wrong". Each class consists of an easy graded activity, so go to class although you dont learn much during class. Online tests that can be difficult, if you don't take advantage of alllll your resources.. if you know what i mean.
I took this online! He is a very challenging teacher if you think you can get away wih not studying for this online class your WRONG! Final is composed of old tests. I can promise you that you will learn the information. there are 8 tests and one cumalitive plus two projects that were easy.
He grades ridiculously on assignments.
Do not take this teacher especially online! Very hard grader you can know everything about the subject but if you did not put a common where it is suppose to be you get 50% off your total score. 20 mins to do a 25 question test. He think he knows it all which is ok he is the teacher so he is suppose to. Don't mess up your GPA by taking this guy.
Run!! This guy makes this class too hard! If you value your gpa do not take him. He is a nice guy though (for whatever that's worth).
Don't take him. He's very arrogant and is mean to students on discussion boards. His grading style is harsh with no explanation.
Most unforgiving teacher I have ever had. I would suggest you take someone else.
Dr. Helms really isn't that bad. I assume the people that are saying he is so terrible is because they did not want to put in work for an online class. It is a real and necessary class, and Dr. Helms is actually pretty cool. He gives very detailed instructions for assignments, so if you read and aren't dumb, you'll get an easy A.
I agree with the other students who think this guy takes himself a little too seriously and has little regard for his students. His grading is not uniform within assignments and he seems to make stuff up as he goes. There are a lot of other teachers who teach 2210; take one of them. Maybe they'll be normal.
Find another professor to take. This professor just doesn't care about his students. He really does KSU an injustice and is a horrible representation of the kindness the other professors have for their students.
He takes this course way too seriously. Class is easy though. Anyone with common sense should pass with at least a C. But the prof has an arrogance about him that is draining.
Took the online course. Very direct and clear schedule. Grades quickly and fairly. All the tests questions are derived from the powerpoints. EASY IF YOU CAN READ AND PUT IN A LITTLE EFFORT. He does send out a lot of reminder emails which can be annoying.
It's class is really not that bad. You just have to read the ppts for the tests. All assignments are clear and to the point. Honestly you'll make an A if you just read the ppts before the tests.
Tough, but isn't that the point of a quality education??
Take him!! He's a great professor, very understanding and helpful, and the class is super easy!! He will pester you about turning in assignments on time but he just wants to see everyone succeed! Such an easy class!!! Just read over the powerpoints for the tests and you'll do fine. The final is questions straight from the tests.
This was a very challenging online course. There were large assignments involving extremely detailed work, one of which was due during the first week of class. If you miss a quiz or hw assignment, best of luck, because he will NOT work with you to make up the credit. Very tough course with a rather cranky professor. I do not recommend it.
He doesn't quite get that this is an intro level Psych course and not something like Cognitive Neuroscience. Overall the weekly work wasn't too bad. A bi-weekly quiz and w monthly discussion board. 2 projects that were not clear and graded harshly. Not the worst professor out there, but definitely arrogant and a difficult A.
If you don't get an A it's your fault. There are 2 major assignments that require a lot of detail, but I did both the day before and made an 100%. The tests are easy and straight from the powerpoint, no use for book at all. I was worried to take the course after the reviews, but it was super easy! Just keep up with the work, ask questions!
Not a bad guy but avoid him as a professor, at least online. The worst part was that he only allowed 20 minutes for a 25 question quiz so there was really no time to think about your answer and you couldn't go back to it if you wanted to change it. Then he wouldn't let you see what you got wrong so there was no way to learn the right answer.
Awful! Avoid him! He's one of those professors that thinks he's teaching a course in brain surgery and that his class trumps all the other ones you're taking. He wrote the textbook you use for the class and overall is just an arrogant guy. Instructions on assignments are not clear. I got a 75 on an assignment because I messed up one minor detail.
Absolutely in love with professor helms
I took this class online and after taking 15 + online courses this in my opinion was the worse. I'll never take him again! It's a required entry level course and as others have said but in my own words he is a bit ridiculous!! There are only two homework assignments and he will deduct points for the smallest things. He's overly knit picky!!
Tests are timed i.e 20 minutes for 25 questions, once passed you cant return to the question. (Final was 90 questions, 75 minutes )Assignments are graded strictly. . If you misread, you are doomed. Also, he will check in with you if you aren't logging in daily. Very nit-picky, but fantastic professor. Easy reading material though )
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS SEVERAL TIMES the smallest mistake you will fail the assignment. We had 8 tests 25questions per 3chapter readings and timed 20minutes. They were impossible to ace. Two major assignments that can make or break your grade. If you have a tough load don't take this class. He is willing to help if needed.
clear on instruction, but whenever you have a question he always refer you back to the original direction. He is not willing to help. don't take him unless you are able to self teach, self instruct, and answer your own question. Would not recommend. The test were more complex than necessary. Knowledge of all the psych professors on 1 test.
I'm a senior and I have a 3.9 not a 4.0 GPA because of this class. Required class, required text (can't be used) because the Prof wrote the book. Took this online, had a D2L problem with a test. Wrote to IT for help, he wouldn't help them or me. Got an A on every other assignment and test but the troubled one, resulting in my only B grade ever.
I guess you could say he's set in his ways, very biased. He talks down to students and degrades people for differing opinions. He taught my first online class and it was difficult to keep up with the information that HE felt was important.
DO NOT take from this professor! I've had many successful moments in online classes bc the teacher was willing to help & meet students in the middle. However, this professor was the complete opposite & the worst! Be sure to read 6+ times & are tech-savvy; he will NOT care if you encounter issues. This is the first and ONLY class I do horrible in.
The first online class I have ever taken. He was okay... For the subject matter he asked a lot. He also wrote the book (need I say more)
I would take this professor again. Just follow his instructions and definitely read the textbook. It is essential to passing, but the readings are very interesting and informative. There are 2 major assignments, but you will do fine as long as you follow his instructions! He can be very detailed with instructions, but he cares about his students.
Make sure you read your syllabus and do not get behind. He literally wrote the textbook so don't expect to get any genuine sympathy from him. Despite his apparent lack of heart, he is a man of integrity and fairness.
Arrogant, not helpful, timed quizzes with not enough time. He wrote the textbook he uses. Responds to you like your stupid. Not there to teach or help.
I don't understand why so many people have complained about his grading structure. His rubric is VERY clear on what he's grading on, and he lists tips of common mistakes that students make. It was definitely a lot of work, but I expected that for a 4-week online summer class. As long as you do the reading and follow directions, you'll do fine.
He is very detailed with his instructions so follow them to the T and you'll do great. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed. I took the online course and it was 4 wks and quite stressful because I had 3 other classes at the same time. But because his instructions were so detailed I didn't have to worry about what grade I'd get.
Long winded, asked extra petty things in assignment like end discussion with sincerely, Your name. Point deducted if you don't. Miss something? Forget it. He forbids make up work. Very arrogant, the smartest man in the world and wrote a book for the syllabus and assignments. Literally the instructions are books in it's self.
Make a run for it. This professor gives KSU a bad rep in the Psyc departmemt Super intelligent and he clearly knows research but don't expect a heart or understanding from him. Don't miss one assignment online class ppt are mostly 100 plus slides per ppt ITS INSANE VERY detailed. If you miss 1 detail, your life is over. I sware RUN
Course involved 8 tests given over the semester, also some discussion posts. Test were the hardest i have ever taken in college. Questions are very unclear as well. As a senior I have a 4.0, now thanks to this class i will receive my first C in college. You can read the book, but it wont do you any good when it comes to the test.
I took Dr. Helms' Careers course online and it's been an okay class. His grading and directions are incredibly specific, and 100% of the material for tests are pulled from the lecture powerpoints he uploads/book chapters. It's not a "hard" class so to speak, but the information is very unnecessarily precise for the tests like percentages/numbers.
Worst online course I've ever taken. Poor instruction from the professor. I aced this course at Georgia southern but my credit was not accepted upon transferring. Professor does not explain what he wants at all.
Worst teacher I've had so far. He gives decent guidelines, however he expects things that go beyond those guidelines. I turned something in two days before the deadline and he counted it as late... He's very harsh and with extremely high expectations for the class that he teaches.
He is a very tough grader. The grading rubrics are not set up to help students succeed and very subjective. He responds to questions like you're stupid. This was a 4 week summer class. I do not recommend taking it in the summer. He did not tailor the course for the time allotted, the only exception being the page count for the essay.
His grading is absolutely ridiculous. He has instructions and believe me if you do not follow EVERY last direction do not expect to get an A on that assignment. He also will not allow you to see him during office hours and will refer to other resources before he answers your question. He is absolutely no help to when it comes to you understanding.
Professor Helms is not a professor I would recommend for online courses. Read directions, carefully, and multiple times. Never again.
I am a senior and have taken Dr. Helms 3 times and he is among the worst. For sen sem, almost all of your points are from a paper and presentation which he grades VERY strictly. Ive never struggled in a class until I took his senior seminar class. I would not gamble my GPA and tentative graduation with his class and neither should you.
NO!!! Dr. Helms is unnecessarily tough, getting an A is seemingly impossible. He is condescending when you make a technical error; turning in assignments is more of a technical challenge than an academic challenge. He gives you 30 minutes for 25 questions involving extremely specific statistics, barely differing answer choices, and trick questions.
I wouldn't want him to be my Psychologist. He only responds to emails twice a week. That is important for HIS mental health. Doesn't care about student's mental health! Even when you completely follow his directions, he will take points off for some unknown reason. Uses book he wrote for class and it is long and boring.
I had to drop senior sem this semester because my topic for my research paper and presentation was not approved. It was a 4 week session I course, and 3 weeks into the semester my topic still was not approved. Points were being deducted and I did not feel confident that I would pass the course. If I had to push back graduation, you know its tough!
Professor Helms doesn't come across well in text. Try not to read to much into his textual tone. 100 points from 4 tests, 25 points from MFT, 100 from paper (min 10 pages), and 100 from presentation (25-30min). Rubrics are clear but instructions are not. Overly critical with procedure over content. Follow directions to a T. Get topic approved ASAP.
If you are taking Dr. Helms for senior seminar in the summer time, you cannot procrastinate. There is a topic approval that is VERY difficult to pass. I passed literally at the last second after having worked for a week to get it approved. However, Dr. Helms is caring and reasonable in personal emergencies and does want you to succeed.
Dr. Helms was rather off-putting at first, but overall I ended up enjoying his class. He is a nice, if somewhat weird, dude who wants you to think critically and test yourself. The text for the Careers class is also pretty handy and I intend to use it beyond this class. Be sure to read everything carefully!
Professor Helms is the worst!
Professor Helms is an ok Teacher. I wouldnt want him to be my professor again. Hes a very tough grader. He removes points for every single mistake made in his assignments. Which can cost you part of your grade. His quizzes are somewhat easy. Be prepared to read..
Dr. Helms honestly scared me to death. When one reads through his rubrics, it is implied that the most minute mistakes can tank your grade. However, I believe that this man is a genius. Because of his heavy grading penalties, I did not dare to turn anything in without double and triple checking everything. His criteria also allowed me to know why!
Tips for this prof. Read the instructions, read them again, than read them one more time. Do exactly what it is says and your guaranteed a B. Read the powerpoints exactly before each quiz, questions are straight from them. You will be able to pass each quiz this way. Course material is actually beneficial to planning how to use your psych degree
All I want to say is run! Do not take his class. I have sent him over 8 emails and he did not respond. He is not specific about assignments. Also, he does not care at all about the students. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
This professor makes you use the lockdown browser with a webcam and the tests do not relate to any of the notes. Lots of reading. Changed my major to something other than psychology because I did not want to get him again.
He is so bad. I had to drop his class within the first few weeks. You can study for hours to fail his tests. Do not take!
I knew senior sem would be hard, but this almost killed me and took my joy forever. Even though he is difficult, He is very clear about everything, and gives many reminds as an attempt to keep students on track. His rubrics are inclusive. Directions are vague, but grading is not. Paper 10-15 pages, MFT Exam, and two 25-30 min presentations.
The class was ridiculousl stressful for no reason. The test do not match watch is on the powerpoints and I had some technical issues during the final due to the lockdown browser that we have to use. I was not able to finish th 5 attempts he provides so I can get the highest grade. I showed him pictures of the error message and he still didn' care.
Took him online & he was fine. Always reminded us when exams were due for the week, which was nice. VERY STRICT on following instructions, so READ IT!!!!! Clear grading criteria, rarely contacted him b/c everything was well organized. Discussion posts, Quizzes, & Lockdown browser Exams. 5 tries on exams, diff Qs each try, cumulative final.
I would consider myself a good student and I struggled tremendously with this online course!! I wish everyone else the best but the chapters in his book were so detailed and very small details (for perspective are important) were things that we had to know amongst a lot of other important info for the test. Fortunately, I made it though it.
Helms is great. Take him for senior capstone!! Only 3 assignments plus MFT - Instructions are very clear and detailed. Follow the directions completely and it is possible to get an A on all assignments! If you have questions, ask him! He will get to you asap. Pick a topic for the paper early - be concise. Do all assignments early. You can get an A.
This is nothing personal against this professor, but his grading is insane! You must follow the very lengthy and specific instructions to a T. I ended up withdrawing from his course, he appears to be making things harder than warranted. I hope he can become a more personable professor in the future :)
All the material to know is on powerpoints which have quite a bit of info for each. Gives multiple chances for each test. There are very few assignments outside of tests and discussions. Very timely about notifications to help keep you on track.
As other people have mentioned, yes, Dr. Helms is tough. He is very fair, though, and his instructions and standards are clearly laid out and easy to follow. College is supposed to be hard, folks.
Helms is quite a different professor in my mind. In all honesty, he's a good guy, but he does grade extremely hard, & is quite the nitpicker on assignments. However, his class helped me realize that I don't belong in psychology, so I'm glad I took it!
I have only failed one class my entire college career and it was his. He grades based on every little detail. If you are stuck because hes the only available teacher, dont do it. You will fail. He has very few assignments and doesnt care about anything you might have going on. Trust me hes not worth it, especially for a capstone. #anyone else
Dr. Helms' online class was easy to navigate and very clear from the start. His grading policies are very specific which I loved since I knew what to expect. This was an asynchronous course meaning all learning was self by self-reading so if you can't do course work on your own, don't take this class. Tests every week but fair questions.
Professor Helms is one of the worst. His grading is insane. You must follow every single detail in his very lengthy instructions. The wording he uses for assignments is hard to understand and easy to mistake. I had to withdraw from his class. Also, forget emailing him asking for clarification or help.
Gives a very long list of requirements for projects and then grades differently. What a disaster. Worst professor EVER.
Personally loved how clear his grading criteria is. Just be sure to read the information every week and you should be good. Tests every other week, multiple attempts on each test, lowest 2 grades dropped. The class is not an easy A just because it's a lot of information to remember, but you can tell he wants you to learn.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. Dont count on doing well in this class. He doesnt care to help you if you need assistance with anything. You get 5 chances to take the test, but they are on lockdown and they are based off of PowerPoints that are 50+ slides. The information you learn in this course is so unnecessary and is a waste.
Guys. I dont know why Dr. Helms has such low ratings. Im looking for classes to add, & i noticed his classes are still open. He was so caring about mental health, checked in if he noticed you hadnt been online as much, gives you five attempts on EVERY quiz & test? Hes a great professor in my opinion. cares, allows easy success, & teaches.
So here's the deal. He gives you 5 chances to take a test, BUT you only know your score for the first test. his instructions are incredibly tedious and nit-picky. He has a very limited window of time for you to get an answer from him and if he thinks he's already shared the info he won't respond to questions. I find him too concerned with himself.
Great professor! Has lots of experience, made class fun, very helpful. Take his class! Easy A if you read the textbook.
This class has one test due every 2 weeks however there are unlimited attempts on the test. This is a good set up but if you miss a test you cannot make it up and they are due at odd times like 12pm on a Monday. He does drop 2 grades however he isnt very interactive with the class.
DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROFESSORS ONLINE CLASS FOR CAREERS IN PSYCH. He doesn't interact with the students at all and he prefers for you not to email him which is ridiculous to me. If you ask him a genuine question he'll refer you to the syllabus or tell you to ask your peers. He uses a lockdown browser and webcam for his tests too which isn't fair.
The tests rely on the textbook and the lil lectures he makes do not help at all,READ your textbook and make lots of notes because that's what made it so difficult for me. You'd think something was the right answer but apparently, you were wrong. You get 5 chances to take the quizzes and basically, your whole grade relies on doing well on those
your grade is basically based on tests only and a couple of discussions. he is not interactive with the class and he prohibits groupme. powerpoints are sometimes 70+ slides. you have 5 attempts for tests, but different questions each time. i got an A in the class, but i would not choose this professor again. but if you have to you'll be ok.
This professor is probably the harshest grader I've ever seen. I had 25 points out of 100 deducted for a typo on a presentation. He will nit pick your grade down. He does not give any leeway, if you miss something that point is gone. I will not take him again
Dr. Helms is a pretty decent instructor. He is a very harsh grader, but all the exams are equal towards your grade and you get multiple attempts, even though they are in lockdown. The Discussions are not hard either. His PowerPoints were unengaging, & the textbook was wordy - it was difficult to study for this class. Overall pretty decent though.
Im still taking the class currently, but so far he gives great feedback and I love how much he cares about our grades because he wants us to do our absolute best! The class does require alot of reading but it pays off but he gives you 5 chances on the exams and even the final exam which is a plus. Take him if you really want the practice.
I was disappointed to see that Helms is still a tenured professor. This guy seems to love the professor power dynamic and docks points for the silliest of things. The arrogant and smug approach to general conversation doesn't help
This class was super easy idk what those other reviews are about. There's an exam every other week that does require you to read 2-3 lengthy powerpoints but you get 5 tries, two lowest grades are dropped, discussions were easy 100's, overall the class took me maybe two hours of time over the span of two weeks, recommend if you don't mind reading.
Terrible professor. When asked to meet with him for help he told me he could not meet me with me for two weeks after the date. The semester I took with him was the worst class I have ever taken at KSU.
Professor Helms is not that bad as a professor. His class is mostly tests; however, he gives 5 attempts for each test and gives two weeks for each module. He gives plenty of time and while the course material is long, it is not hard to understand.
There was a total of 9 tests in the course, each had 5 attempts which made it easier. He gives you plenty of time to take your tests and study the material. A few discussions and minimal required assignments. Everything in the course is available Day One so you can do the course at your leisure, just make sure to pay attention to due dates.
Helms is smug and likes to dock points for his own miscommunication. There are hardly any grades in the semester, giving you no wiggle room for mistakes. He also will not respond to emails other than on Tuesdays and Thursdays which is EXTREMELY impractical and irresponsible of a professor to do, especially while teaching a fully online class.
Professor Helms has a power trip of some sort. He docks major points for small errors. There is zero wiggle room or grace. This is hands down the worst professor that I have taken in my 4.5 years at KSU. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He has no lectures in the online classes. You have to read everything by yourself. So it seems like self study; feels like no teaching happening here. You have to memorize numbers and percentages for the exams which seems very unnecessary. Exams are all webcam. 9 exams total.
This was by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. I had accommodations placed with the title ix coordinator due to my pregnancy and he seemed to care less. I turned in an assignment minutes late (seriously minutes) and he docked off 10 points out of 25. His exams are very misleading, and the questions are redundant. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Helms is not good professor and lacks empathy. He assigns only a few major assignments, but deducts 25% of points for minor issues. He is condescending, unhelpful, and indifferent to students who are struggling. I strongly recommend taking the capstone course with a different professor, as he may fail you without concern.
Professor Helms is an excellent instructor for Careers in Psychology. His teaching style is engaging and informative, providing valuable insights into various career paths. The course is well-organized, with clear expectations and practical assignments. While not overly difficult, it offers useful for students exploring psychology-related careers.
Please for your sake and your mental health, do not take this professor. He's hands down the worst professor that KSU has and I don't understand how he' still there. There's a couple major assignments that are graded heavily and very hard to get a good grade. He provides no guidance and expects you to know exactly what you're supposed to be doing.
Professor Helms' class is fast-paced but manageable if you stay on top of the textbook and assignments. Using unstuckstudy alongside the course materials was a game-changer for me.
All texts are lock down/web cam. you have 5 attempts however it's so much information you never know what will be in the test. He is not kind at all. He kept sending me emails about my tests as if I were a little child. I would never take again, and I do Not recommend.
please avoid him completely if you can. he ONLY provides 50+ page slideshows as instruction with a lockdown test. the slides are minimal effort as well. the tests require you to remember the most insignifcant percentages and details that were mentioned briefly. he literally does not care about making sure you learn and understand the material.
It wasn't bad at all. As someone who works full time and usually DREAD doing homework after coming home from work, I didn't find that this class was as difficult as some people made it sound. You get 5 tries on each exam which is VERY generous. Overall, he seemed like a great professor. I emailed him a couple of times and he was very responsive.
Horrible. He is cold and truly does not care about his students; he is just extremely rude and passive through his announcements/instructions. His instructions have weird loopholes and unnecessarily long explanations to make you confused. Avoid this man at all costs, it's amazing how he still teaches.
This professor, while seemingly good-natured, was unrealistic. The exams are unrealistic. I am not sure how 50+ pages of powerpoint slides helps students maximize their results on the exams. The questions asked are obscure and felt like they were designed to keep scores within a very narrow range. Take only if you have a photographic memory.
I don't recommend taking Dr. Helms. Seemingly nice guy, but his class is a mess. Your entire grade is essentially made up of 9 tests and 4 discussions. He's an extremely tough grader on the discussions, and each test is on a PowerPoint that generally takes 1-2 hours to thoroughly read, which you'll need to if you want to pass. Take someone else.
Personally, I really like Professor Helms. I'm not sure what all of these bad reviews are about. He is a tough grader, but I always felt like he was very clear on criteria and the expectations he has for his students are realistic. He is also very generous and gives 5 attempts per test. I would take his class again.
I have so much to say and not enough room to say it. I have never been so serious in my entire life: DO NOT TAKE HIM. FOR ANY CLASS! RUN!
