I got an A- because I didn't turn in some stuff :( THE MOST USEFUL THING I HAVE EVER DONE IN COLLEGE. I learned how to buy a car, a house, how to invest, and so many other life skills. You'll do fine in this class if you just do all the assignments. The TAs are available to help if you don't understand how to do something. So worth your time.
He is amazing! Every student should take this class!
Dr. Hill is very kind, and cares most about helping you learn REAL life lessons about finance, and apply them! Some test questions are, in my opinion, a bit trickier than needed, but overall is not a terribly difficult class.
Dr. Hill is amazing! SFL 260 taught me so many important things that I would not have learned otherwise (investing, different types of insurance, etc.). Overall, the class is pretty easy, tests and quizzes are open book and notes. I would 10/10 recommend Dr. Hill and this class to anyone thinking about taking it.
Make sure you prepare for the math problems on your quizzes and exams. You are timed, so have you notes with you. The great thing about this class is that it was open book and notes, so that was helpful.
Dr. Hill is such a kind and genuine man. The family finance course was very informative and the work was enough to make sure you were learning but not extremely hard or boring. I highly recommend it to anyone!
Professor Hill is great! I didn't realize how much math was a part of this class (I was not looking to take it for the math credit, just an elective). And with how busy I got this semester with all my other classes and things happening in my personal life I felt like it was a lot of homework. But overall this was a great class!
SFL260 was such a great class. It was online (Canvas) so I never actually talked to Prof. Hill but he was so kind and caring and I can tell he wants the best for his students. The class is manageable w/o watching the lectures honestly but they're worth it on 2x speed. 10/10 would recommend! Essential life skills you might not learn anywhere else.
This class is extremely informational, and I don't think there's any other class that will teach you more things that you will actually use in life. Professor Hill is so genuine and caring, and it really makes you want to pay attention and learn. This class is awesome!!
SO applicable to life, probably the most helpful class I've taken at my many years at BYU.
This professor is absolutely amazing!! The class involved quite a bit of math, which was hard for me. However, super duper worth it and would 10/10 recommend!! The life lessons learned in this class are amazing and worth learning. And this professor makes it fun and joyful!
Dr. Hill is an amazing professor! He is understanding and always willing to help. You can tell he really cares about his students! There is some math involved in this class, but if you go to/watch the TA reviews you will be totally fine. Everything in this class was very applicable and I highly recommend it!!
This was a very useful class. Dr. Hill is great! The only complaint I have is that there is so much information to take in and cram that it doesn't always seem realistic that you'll retain a ton. The section on taxes is SO BORING. But the rest is great.
This is probably the most practical class you can ever take. Dr. Hill does a great job at making the content interesting while providing really meaningful assignments to help practice the financial skills he teaches. And he is one of the most caring professors Ive ever met; he couldve retired by now, but he loves teaching and helping students.
This is a great introductory class on family and personal finances. The content can take some time to digest--particularly the tax section. However, I would consider this class essential for anyone to learn how to better manage their finances, and Dr. Hill is a great teacher for the class, and definitely cares about his student's success.
I loved Dr. Hill's class and felt very educated on real life principles of finance in family life! The projects and assignments actually helped in my life situations. Hill is So kind and gives fun extra credit opportunities. The quizzes are a little tough and take some math study time. So make sure you understand the material! Great class.
SLF 260 with Professor Hill is TOTALLY worth it. This is by far the best class that I have taken at BYU because it provides the most information that you will use and need for life decisions. I knew nothing about numbers until now! Professor Hill is great and want's each of his students to succeed in school but most importantly at life.
Dr. Hill is a sweetie. His class is very useful. His tests are very long and honestly kind of pointless, but they are open book, which is a plus!
I loved taking from professor Hill! It was very clear that he cares about his students and wants them to understand the material, and is willing to answer any questions that you have. The TA's were also super helpful and fast to respond.
Great experience with this class and professor. Would totally recommend it- I just took it to fill up a class spot but I am really glad I did. I learned a ton about family finance.
Professor Hill does a really good job explaining things that I initially thought were really confusing. He also has a lot of personal experience and gives a lot of opportunities to earn extra credit in the course
I took SFL 260 - Family Finances with Dr. Hill, and learned so much! It's all the stuff people worry about - buying a house or car, doing your taxes, and investing. Everything I learned, I applied. Not a second of it felt like wasted time or busy work! Dr. Hill made all expectations clear and graded fairly. Would 1000% recommend!!
The class was interesting, and I learned a lot about finances. However, the tests are super long and just be ready to grind them out. Make sure you do the math problems or else the tests will take forever.
This class is amazing and Dr. Hill is an incredible professor! He has great stories and information about finances. He is really fun but also teaches very clearly. The class is also very straightforward, especially if you actually review the readings and look at the math. I would 100% recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about finances!
He's a good professor. Lots of helpful life lessons. I think this is a good class. It is easy. There's a lot of assignments that take time, but it's super manageable.
SFL 260 was easily the most applicable-to-life class I've taken at BYU. Dr. Hill does a fantastic job simplifying complex financial concepts in a way that is understandable, and every assignment is beneficial for your own future. I would 10/10 recommend taking this online class from him!
Dr. Hill is a great professor. He truly cares about what he teaches, and it is easy to tell he desires all his students to succeed financially. Overall, his class is extremely applicable and meaningful.
I liked the class and learned a lot of useful stuff. I like how practical his assignments were and really got me thinking about financial things that would really help my life. I would definitely recommend if you want a useful extra few credits. My only complaint was just how freaking Provo all the examples he used were
I took SFL260 as an Online Class. Each week had material to watch and read, and a couple other assignments, including discussions, quizzes, and exercises where you apply material. Dr Hill has a clear grading rubric used on assignments. The tests were fairly easy. If you score below an 80%, he lets you correct it. He sets you up to be successful.
This class is a pretty easy online course but there is quite a lot of busy work so beware of 4 midterms and 3-5 assignments every week.
I took this online, and it was really manageable! There are a lot of assignments each week, but most aren't too difficult. If you get below an 80% on tests you can go to the lab to get your score up to an 80%. The lab is open almost everyday to help with difficult math problems. Overall, the class had more math than expected, but helpful for life.
This class is really straightforward. I took it online and I really didn't have to spend a ton of time on it throughout the week. My only complaints about the course was that using Canvas can be a little confusing, you have to be pretty conscientious about getting online to check to make sure you're not missing any little assignments.
Dr. Hill is a very passionate and kind professor who truly cares about the success of his students. This class was a little difficult because all of it was new; it was like learning a new language! I value the lessons I learned and am grateful that I'll be able to able them to my life.
This online course needs a makeover, it needs to be simplified. Two textbooks, a workbook, and lectures. It's a bit much. Lots of assignments, tests are long. Open-book, open-note, which is nice, but still...a bit much. Maybe this class is better in person, but I definitely would not recommend it online, and I like online classes. Disappointing.
This class was so beneficial! I learned so much about finances and the crucial things we need when we start to handle finances on our own! I would reccomend this class to anyone.
Dr. Hill's class is one that every student should take! Really prepares you for the future. One of the best classes at BYU!
Professor Hill is a very reasonable professor. The class is very manageable. Professor Hill is a pretty easy grader and the assignments are not too hard. The tests are all open book open note which is nice but they are unnecessarily long. There is a time limit of 2.5 hours and it always took me up to the time limit.
Dr. Hill is awesome! The class is super manageable and there are TA reviews every week to help with the math. This class was the most practical class I've taken at BYU and I learned a ton. The assignments are applicable to life and he grades them super easy. 10/10
Dr. Hill is amazing! This class has been one of the most practical and useful classes that I have taken at BYU. There can be a lot of busy work, but it is definitely manageable and you learn really interesting material. I would recommend this class to everyone who attends BYU. All the quizzes and tests are open notes and open textbooks!
Great class. If you need to fit 3 more credits into your schedule, SFL 260 is a great pick. The material is useful and practical, and is taught clearly and effectively. Not a hard class, and you can tell that Dr. Hill wants you to learn and do well in the class.
The class was great and the content that we used was applicable! I would recommend this course!
Hill's class was solid for Family Finance. It was a bit more difficult than I thought it would be, but it taught such valuable skills that I will apply for the rest of my life!
Dr. Hill is phenomenal. Family Finance does require math, which is the difficult part of the class. However, you learn many skills. Do not be scared of the math because there are TAs and many other resources shown online. It is a great class that I think everyone should take! He wants you to succeed!! Yes tests are open note!
DR HILL IS SO SWEET! I wish his class was in person! Lots of assignments every week which is the only downside. But the lectures are so useful and entertaining. Tests are open book and note! TAs are so helpful. Probably one of the best professors I've ever had.
Good teacher who gave clear explanations of what the class would bring to the table.
Dr. Hill is amazing! The class content was super easy (the math could get a little confusing but the TA lab is awesome and there are always people willing to help) but it's all SO APPLICABLE.
The assignments were useful (for example, setting up a Roth IRA), textbook readings were insightful (and online!), and Professor Hill is very knowledgeable. I was extremely impressed with the class and am grateful for everything I learned. I have already recommended that many of my family and friends take his class before he retires soon!
Professor Hill was really good. This was an online course so everything was pretty self explanatory. There was kind of a lot to keep track of, but still not too bad. This class does require a lot of effort and taking note of deadlines. Overall, really good class and taught a lot of helpful things.
Dr. Hill is one of the kindest teachers I have ever had. He has a true desire to help his students learn about finance for their future to benefit others and themselves. This has been my favorite class I have taken because it is so practical and I will use the knowledge I gained every day. This class should be a GE
Dr. Hill made learning about family finance super interesting. He broke down difficult concepts well and always included entertaining stories. I took this class on-demand, which I enjoyed. There are assignments due weekly, as well as weekly quizzes that aren't too difficult.
Dr. Hill is awesome! He is always smiling and will put you in a good mood. The content was super helpful - especially if you don't know much about finances beforehand. I learned basics to more complicated stuff that I know will be super useful for my life
I took this course on demand and that is 100% the way to go!! So easy, TA's are super helpful, his recorded lectures are awesome. He talks SUPER slow, so I was grateful to be able to play videos back on 2x speed and that way it sounded like a normally speaking speed haha. One of the most helpful classes I have ever taken - highly recommend.
Professor Hill made all of these scary finance topics seem so approachable and easy. His lectures were interesting, the assignments were practical, and all of the exams are open note. This was definitely the most useful class I have taken at BYU, and I did in online on demand so it was very convenient! Assignments due every Wednesday and Saturday.
Super awesome & practical class. Teaches you a lot about life that you don't learn about in other courses. Everything from taxes to buying a house to investing. There is a good amount of math but they give you opportunities for help from a TA. There are Q&As where you can send in a question to Bro. Hill and he will answer it in a review lecture.
Professor Hill did a great job of teaching practical topics that are hard to understand. He is passionate about what he teaches, which makes him fun to listen to! I learned a lot of very beneficial stuff in his class that I will use in my everyday life!
awesome class! practical learning and clear expectations!
The class started off extremely easy, but then got hard. It was still definitely manageable. Tests are open note/book and aren't hard, but they are so much longer than they need to be. If you need a 3 credit class, take it! You actually learn things valuable to your life
Amazing class and would definitely take it again. You get the learn the principles of how to manage money for a family but they also apply to individuals. Really clear lay out and easy to follow and understand lectures.
The class is really not that hard content-wise, it's just remembering to do everything on time and remembering that the class exists because it is completely online. All of the tests are open note and open book. Everything that is taught is directly applicable to "real life" in that most everything will be used again.
Great class that is totally useful for real life! I recommend every BYU student to take this class.
This class has helped me to understand the basics of finances a little better. The class isn't hard at all, as long as you make a little time for it each week. Professor Hill is a very kind professor that genuinely cares about the well-being of his students.
Great professor and class. You learn a lot of valuable life skills. Would definitely recommend you take the class from him.
Really useful class! There are walk-throughs for everything, so even though there's a lot of math, it's super clear he wants us to succeed. He teaches tons of useful stuff like how to buy a car/house, how to budget, taxes, principles for frugal living, and more. If you want to take SFL 260 from Jeffrey Hill, jump on it fast!! He's retiring in 2023.
I learned a lot from this class. The professor is great!
Professor Hill is simply a great teacher. His lectures were entertaining and relevant. He shares life experiences which show he truly lives what he teaches. Do the assignments, go to TA reviews, and you'll do fine.
I learned a lot of things from Dr. Hill! My TAs were very clear when grading- For the assignments, if you do exactly what the rubric asks you to do, you will be just fine. For exams and quizzes (all open note), there are review problems you can access in the preparation material that are extremely helpful, if you struggle with the math!
This was a great course! There is a lot to learn but tests are open text book and notes.
I have never taken an online class that was more organized. Every aspect of class was clearly explained and accessible. You will never be wanting for help. There are countless videos to help you understand the material and prepare for exams. Plus, the information you learn can change your life. Definitely take this class!
One of the best professors ever! By far my favorite class taken so far.
Very straightforward class. All quizzes and tests are open book, open notes, and open canvas!
Honestly this was a great class. I took it online and it was pretty easy to navigate, the TA's were super helpful and I felt like everything was graded fairly and there wasn't too much homework! The tests are pretty long and can be difficult, but they are open book/note so that makes it better.
Great class & super useful information. Good for an online class, but if you like more interaction I would take it in person.
He had some valuable tips for personal finances. I learned a lot!
Professor Hill was incredible! He had a ton of really good insights on family finance that I had never thought of before. Such a good class to learn real life finance practices. Every student should take this class!
Dr. Hill is seriously one of the kindest and most caring professors I have had. I took his class online, but we still had a couple of in person activities. If you are thinking about taking his class, do it! It was one of the most impactful classes I took at BYU and I know I will use the skills that I learned in his class for the rest of my life.
One of my favorite classes at BYU! The online format is well structured. Exams are open book and note, TA's are easily accessible. I learned so much about family finance that I will carry with me. If you follow the rubric on assignments, you will get A's. Dr. Hill REALLY cares about your success + is super understanding.
Professor Hill was great! You can tell he really cares about his students and the subject matter being taught. Most everything taught was very useful and applicable to life as an adult and with a family, though some lessons were a bit dated (very VERY LDS). You will absolutely be prepared for the tests no matter what, though, so that's a big plus.
Professor Hill is excellent! His SFL 260 class taught me so many important skills that I will use throughout my life. This is a must take class for everyone.
Dr Hill is one of the best professors I have ever had. This online course is set up very clearly. I learned a wide variety of things. There is some time you have to spend watching video lectures and doing reading but you can always play the videos 2x because he is a slow talker. The tests are open notes and book. This class made me change my major!
Dr. Hill is very passionate about what he teaches and that passion makes the course more enjoyable. You care about the subjects because he does. This class taught me a lot about skills I can apply to my life now and after graduation. Dr. Hill does a great job of teaching this information and helping students understand!
Dr Hill is an incredible professor! He is very caring and really puts forth effort to help students understand the concepts. The curriculum is really useful and covers many things about finances.
I think everyone should take this class! The information is incredibly useful for life and Dr. Hill teaches it in an interesting and clear way. He sets clear expectations but isn't unreasonably demanding. He is always available to get help and genuinely cares about your success not only in class but also in life.
This is the BEST class at BYU! It teaches you everything you need to know about finances that school never taught you growing up. I took this class online and it was so easy (but I also put in the work for it). Dr. Hill is so kind and provided the best, most engaging video lectures. The TAs are understanding and give great feedback.
Dr. Hill is awesome. I took a class from him in the past, SFL 160, and loved it so much I took family finance specifically from him. Online is a pretty difficult style for me usually, but I genuinely loved the lectures which were chalk full of practical and helpful information. I'm so sad that Jeff is retiring, he will be very missed.
Absolutely loved Professor Hill's SFL 260 Class! I would HIGHLY recommend taking it! All of the things taught throughout the class are very applicable and will help you in your personal and family finances. Awesome teacher with great lectures! Class is easy if you do your work and the TA's are very helpful too!
Dr. Hill lectures off personal insight on how to apply the priniciples being taught. He genuinely cares about his students & wants them to be successful in both study & application to their lives. He's outstanding. His TA's to make even the most difficult math simpler to understand. Take the class even if not required. It will change your life!
Amazing professor and great class. I learned so many essential things about personal and family finance. I recommend this class to everyone. Truly the most practical course at BYU.
This class is a must-take! I've learned so many things that are relevant to life and Dr. Hill makes it easy to understand. I am terrible at math, but it really is manageable in this course. I highly recommend taking this course from Dr. Hill -- make sure you do it soon because he is retiring in 2023!
This is an amazing class! Dr. Hill makes it so your understanding of finances grow. He is good at tying in financial principles to the gospel. I really enjoyed each of his lectures. The class does have a lot of reading and class assignments. However, it is worth it in the end! Just prepare in advanced to take some more time with this class.
This class was so applicable to real life. This class addressed understanding how to manage family finances, how to prepare for the future, and how to anticipate and avoid financial problems. Dr. Hill is such a qualified professor in this field. He truly cares about what he is teaching and wants to pass on the knowledge he has to bless others.
I took the class all online but he seems like a great guy and is passionate about what he teaches. My TA was super helpful with anything I needed. Great class!
Dr. Hill is super knowledgeable and wants to help every student become a good financial steward. This class is super practical and you really get what you put into it. Plenty of video lectures, but all the assignments are very straightforward and the tests are open book! I loved this class a lot and appreciated the online format.
Professor Hill is great. :) His focus is really to prepare you to be better with your finances. Everything he says just radiates how much he cares about you and your life. 10/10, would recommend because the class material is SO HELPFUL and I don't understand why we don't learn this stuff all throughout high school because it's super applicable.
Jeffrey Hill was such a joy to learn from! You can tell he really loves what he teaches and cares for his students. There are is a lot of material to cover, and I underestimated the amount of math involved. However, he's good about having you understand the concepts. Additionally, his tests and quizzes are open note.
Dr Hill was great! This was for sure one of the most interesting and useful classes I have ever taken. I took the online version and I struggled with the math as it was more than I initially thought, and I would have much rather learned the math from him than trying to work it out on my own. But he gave us lots of resources and everything was great
This is probably the most practical course I've taken at BYU. So many things to be learned that have real life application. More math than I was expecting but it is doable, more practice may just need to be put forward. I HIGHLY recommend this course from Dr. Hill.
I took this spring term and the load was more than I expected but Dr. Hill is great and so caring. He gives great tips that you'll use the rest of your life!
This class was a great introduction to family finance and I learned a ton of things that I know are going to be extremely useful throughout my life! I would certainly take this class again. Only complaint is that there are a lot of tests, with 3 midterms and a final.
They were difficult topics to learn in my opinion, but everything was open book & open note! The slides and lectures were engaging and easy to follow! I thought it was a very easy class to take especially for spring term! Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Hill is a fantastic teacher! He is so wise, humorous, organized, and kind! He genuinely wants his students to succeed in his class and in life. This class is awesome for anyone who is wanting to learn basic personal finance skills.
Dr. Hill is amazing. The content of the class is amazing. This class was really helpful to learn things that are essential to know to have a stable financial life. I enjoyed this class a lot.
Dr. Hill is so kind and caring; I'm sad he is retiring soon because he was a great professor to take SFL 260 from. This class teaches you basic financial survival skills like how to save for and buy a car and a house, what type of insurance you should get, how to use credit cards, and how to invest your money wisely. One of the most helpful classes
Dr. Hill is an awesome professor who loves his students. There are many different resources posted to help you succeed in his class including review lectures TA help. He is kind and knows what he's teaching. This is a class that I wish everyone would take because it is super helpful and teaches you a lot about how to deal with finances!
Just make sure to read the powerpoints and learn how to do the math. It is a pretty easy as long as you turn in all of your assignments.
Professor Hill is very kind and provided lots of real world and personal examples to go along with the readings. This class was a little heavier than I anticipated, but it makes sense since it was only for a term. He provides generous grading criteria, and lots of extra credit. Just make sure to follow the rubric closely!
Professor Hill provided me with a lot of knowledge about finances and beginning them as a family. Things were explained nicely. All tests and quizzes were open book and open note, which was really nice. The TA's were a little hard to contact though.
This class is valuable if you aren't already doing what you know you should be doing (ie getting a credit card, saving for retirement, monthly budgeting). Dr. Hill loves what he does, but you're deferred to a TA for everything, including grading. A bit repetitive, but you can easily watch all the videos on 2x speed, so not too bad in the end.
A great professor overall, his class is comprehensive though. A lot of potential scenario assignments (e.g., plan for and buy a car, a house etc.) that take up a lot of your time. Could be more modern, less handwork, and learning more how to utilize online resources, professionals to turn to etc.
Dr. Hill is the best there is. Not much more to be said. Just do the work and the class is easy. He lets you use notes and the reviews show you step by step how to do each problem on the test, he just changes the numbers. No way to not succeed. And he's just the biggest sweetheart. If you want to excel in life, take the class.
This class was great. Professor Hill gives study guides for all of his tests and they help a lot. He cares about his students, and teaches useful material. Make sure to check canvas though for upcoming assignments because he usually doesnt mention them in class. Solid choice for a GE.
Great professor, great class! Very useful information about finances.
Professor Hill is so caring and his lectures are so relevant and interesting! This class changed my life!
He was a great professor and it was a very easy class. I didn't love the tests, though. Many of the questions just reflected his own opinion and you had to think like him to get the correct answer.
I learned so many skills that will help me in my day to day life. There is math in this course, which I did not expect, but Dr. Hill does a great job of showing you how to do the problems. I suck at math and still got an A in the class. There is lots of reading and lectures, but I felt it was all beneficial and inspirational.
Super clear expectations for the course and you come away with so much knowledge that is applicable and tied into the gospel! An A is super attainable and the course content is interesting. Open note/book exams. I wouldn't mind reading the textbook with spare time, it's great!
I absolutely LOVED professor Hill! I took his class fall semester 2021, and wish I could take it again haha. He makes finance easy, and is a fair grader. I never felt like there was busy work or anything like that. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Honestly, this is one of the best classes I have taken at BYU. I just got married, and I feel like I have learned sooooo much from this class about how to manage major financial purchases and how to avoid debt. I feel empowered to be an adult, basically.
Professor Hill is awesome. He is so kind and passionate about what he does. You can see through his teaching that he cares about these subjects and ultimately wants us to know this information so we can have a happy and successful life.
Amazing professor
Professor Hill is such a caring professor who is very passionate about personal finances. He teaches things with a ton of context which helps the course be useful in the real world. He makes math concepts simpler, too. Honestly, this course should be made mandatory for all students because it's so helpful for real life.
Professor Hill is super passionate about finances, it makes him a great teacher. The online course allows for a more flexible schedule, there are lectures and math to review every week and a graded quiz every Saturday. There are also online graded discussions. Offers extra credit and the opportunity to make up points on math problems.
Professor Hill is phenomenal! I don't often write reviews on professors unless I think they are amazing, and he definitely is. He keeps your attention in lectures and is never one to assign a ton of busy work. You will get done what is needed to understand the material, but he cares more that you personally get something out of this class.
This was such a great class! I learned so much about money and just life in general. Professor Hill is such a great teacher and you can tell he's really passionate about the topics he teaches. Highly recommend!
I took this as a blended class (online lecture material and one in-class day each week). The online lectures were great! The in-person class turned into random question and answer sessions or story-telling time, so I stopped going to class and just used the online format. I enjoyed the material and liked the open note/book exam format!
This class was probably the most helpful class I have taken at BYU. I was in the blended course. I did not attend the in-person lecture, but still got good grades. Most of the assignments are hands-on, so you learn the principles. Followed the schedule closely. Provided a lot of resources for success. The TAs had office hours everyday.
I thought taking this class was great and I learned a lot that I find very valuable. There's a lot of group projects and individual projects, but they aren't the hardest thing in the world.
Professor Hill is amazing! His lectures were inspirational and motivating. Don't hesitate to take this class from him! He helps set you up for financial and family success. I learned so much from this class. All students should learn the material covered in this class. You gain valuable skills and can apply everything you learn to real life.
Professor Hill is very passionate about what he teaches. This course is designed for students to get out as much as they put in. He gives many resources to prepare students to succeed on the exams and the content is not only interesting but applicable as well. If effort is put in, this course will prepare students to be financially wise.
Professor Hill is a great professor! Be ready for tests every few weeks, but as long as you do the math review you are totally fine. He is very upfront with what you need to do and doesn't leave you with questions. The TA's are also very helpful too!
I took his online class. His lessons are very through and his examples are helpful. Lots of resources to help you succeed and his TA's are amazing! Go to them if you have questions about homework. It is a lot of work because it is a lot of concepts you have to learn each chapter. It will all be on the tests to be sure to know them well.
Great Professor! He is caring and the class is very well set up. There is more math than I expected in this class and it moves fast. However, it is totally doable and there are many resources to help students succeed and thrive. It is helpful to stay on top of it and go to the TA's whenever questions arise. Great class overall!!
Professor Hill's lectures were always full of valuable information and weren't too long. He is very kind and caring, and the class itself taught me many important lessons for life. There was more math than I was expecting, but you are provided with all the resources you will need to succeed.
Extremely knowledgeable and wise!
Dr. Hill is a really good professor. All the tests are open book and open note. He gives you a study guide as well. I took it online and enjoyed that it was at my own pace. Really not a hard class if you do the workbook problems and do all of the assignments.
Dr. Hill is one of the best professors I have had at BYU even with an online class. We did a few zooms during the semester and it was clear that he cared about his students. The SFL 260 class was super easy if you used the walkthrough videos!
Dr. Hill is great! It is clear he cares for his students and prioritizes students over the material. His class was easily accessible, do-on-your-own for the most part with a few lectures to attend live throughout the semester! Organized and set up well! Exams were kind of long, but not overly hard! I would definitely take again!
I took this class online and loved the flexibility. Lectures were recorded a few years back and so at this point all the virtual course kinks have been worked. The class flow made sense, everything was very clear. It was more math heavy than I anticipated, but there are so many resources you can use. There are also extra credit opportunities.
Professor Hill did an amazing job teaching this class. It was on-demand with a few webinars throughout the semester. The material is incredibly helpful and has already had a great impact on my life. Highly recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn how to spend their money.
This class was helpful at motivating to work on financial projects (retirement, budgeting, investing). As beneficial as you make it! If you want to almost do nothing, you can. If you want to work hard and get more benefit, you can. Stay on top of a fair amount of assignments. Would recommend the online version, so you can watch on double speed.
He basically showed up, read the lecture (got off topic with lots of stories) and then left. He never talked about group projects or assignments that were up coming- you just had to remember to do it and figure it out on your own. That said, there are no tests, so it's a very easy class, but attendance is graded.
Super fun and great! Gives lots of options for extra credit and is easy to reach out to.
Very easy class to understand. He provides great material and allows you to learn very practical skills! It is open book and open not and so you can just focus on internalizing the material.
Professor Hill is literally the best ever. He makes sure that you can succeed by giving homework that is pretty much exactly the same as the tests. So much extra credit and he lets you bump up your math portion of the test to an 80 if needed just by talking to the TAs about what you got wrong. You will not regret taking this class.
He's a very good teacher and very simply teaches important things to know about finance. The tests are open book/open note but sometimes the math in them is more difficult than I'd like. It's a great class but maybe a little too much work for a class I didn't need to take.
An amazing class to take to understand all those things that adults always seem to just "get." Insurance, stocks, bonds, saving for retirement, budgeting, caring for children, joining finances with a significant other, buying a house, buying a car: I could go on. I feel like I am so much more prepared to be a "real" adult and make these decisions.
Dr. Hill was such a nice professor. He was super accommodating! I loved the projects and activities he assigned that helped us to apply what we were learning to our own lives. I loved his webinars to get the class to interact together. I learned so much from him
Professor Hill was an excellent professor. I learned so much about finances I do not think I would have learned from any other source. He also taught the spiritual implications of handling finances which I appreciated. There is quite a bit of work for this class per week, but none of it is too difficult and it is completely manageable.
Prof. Hill cares about his students a lot and gives them all the resources they need to succeed. The subject material is very relevant to our actual lives (insurance, credit cards, etc.). I'm grateful for what I've learned, but sometimes the math was redundant because there are systems in place that already tell you everything you need to know.
I loved this class! I learned a lot of important life skills and enjoyed going to class. Easy A if you do the work.
He was awesome. The class was super practical and it was all the things you wish you would've learned growing up but you didn't.
Dr. Hill's class was one of my favorites! I learned so much and he is very kind and cares about his students.
Professor Hill is great! I was in his hybrid class. If you watch the lectures, there's really no need to go to the in person class unless you want additional information. All his tests are open book and note, so they are a breeze and he offers a ton of extra credit opportunities. He's on your side and wants you to succeed!
Professor Hill is an awesome professor! This class teaches real life skills, which are super helpful, and Professor Hill is a great person and cares about his students. Assignments help you learn good financial skills, but they aren't too difficult.
I loved the class and Dr. Hill! He is so fun and so caring.
Great class and learned a lot. Really like Dr. Hill!
Dr. Hill was my favorite professor at BYU. He cares a lot about his students and takes time to learn your name. The lectures are easy to follow and the homework assignments are really easy. It feels like a 1 credit class and I always looked forward to going. Attendance is mandatory.
The kindest man with the sweetest stories!! Such a beneficial class, I had such a good time with dr hill. 100% recommend to anyone who loves families and marriage
Professer Hill was awesome! He's engaging in class and fun to discuss with. The class is very applicable and helped my husband and I navigate our finances in the early months of our marriage! This was the most applicable class I have taken in college.
Great class and professor, I sometimes had trouble understanding the math in the workbook, but overall a very useful and good class to take!
Take Family Finance from him! Winter 2023 will be his last semester so hurry! He really cares about what he is teaching and wants his students to succeed!
This class was a bit of work but worth it for all we learned!
Dr. Hill is literally one of the best teachers I've ever had! He's so funny and makes the subject material interesting and applicable. You HAVE to take this class! It's so useful and I've learned so much. I feel so much more confident about finances, taxes, credit scores, loans, budgeting, preparing for retirement, and so much more.
This is a great class to take. This class has a lot of good information to use in your life.
Professor Hill is a great teacher, lots of busy work though so get ready for that. Tests are timed, but open note which is a huge help.
This was a super helpful course. I think in terms of practical skills it is by far one of the best classes I have ever taken and I would strongly recommend it. Dr. Hill organizes his class very well and the instruction is impeccable.
Dr. Hill is a really good teacher! I took his class online, and his instructions are super clear. The TA's are also super helpful. Dr. Hill is very understanding and his material is very doable. As long as you keep up with the weekly assignments, you should be good to go!
Dr. Hill is awesome!! I highly recommend that every student take this class
Professor Hill really cares more about the students learning the material than making it hard and difficult to get a good grade. He allows you to use notes and the textbook during exams. This next semester, Winter 2023 will be his last so make sure you sign up for his class before he retires!
Good Professor and really cares about his students. The only beef I have is that he talks so slow. Need that 3.0 speed!
Jeffrey Hill is a great teacher! He really cares about his students and does so much to help support them. His 260 class is just enough to help you learn but not too much that it is overwhelming. The assignments are very practical and help you to learn to apply concepts to your life. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Professor Hill was a great professor, sorry to hear that next semester will be his last before he retires! His lectures and chapters were well structured and the math wasn't too hard but very useful. This class taught me everything I wanted to know about finances and then some. If you want to learn how to be a responsible adult, take this class.
Dr. Hill structures this class so that it will be by far one of the most useful and practical classes you take during your college career, while also being pretty easy. There were a few assignments that I think weren't necessary, but they also didn't take very long. Would highly recommend!
Took his online class and it was great. I even skipped an assignment and still got a good grade. He gives some amazing advice and counsel on how to become financially smart. I would definitely take his class again.
There is a reason why his rating is so good. You won't regret taking his class.
This class was not overwhelming. I spent maybe 3 hours a week and did well. There are a million things I am going to implement into my own finances from this class that I would have never thought of on my own. Highly recommend it, even if you don't need to take it. It will benefit the rest of your life.
THIS CLASS IS SO WORTH IT! It is just such a good class both practically and spiritually. It's clear that Dr. Hill cares about his students and the course material. The class itself isn't super hard and the tests are totally manageable. Take this class!!!!! You won't regret it!!!!
Dr. Jeff Hill is amazing; he is so happy! He loves teaching about finances, has amazing stories, and he gives us so many useful tips. It is easily one of the most practical classes ever taught at BYU! The only warning I'll give is that there is a lot of outside work to be done outside of in-person lecture, so budget time accordingly.
His class gives applicable information and you can really tell he cares. The class is not difficult at all.
I liked Dr. Hill's class because he is genuine and the subject material is very applicable to everyday life. It has completely changed my view on finances. The one thing I didn't like was that my class was blended and all the material was online. The in-person lectures did not add anything to my learning experience.
The recorded lectures explained the content well, but you need to teach yourself lots of math from reading the textbook and watching overviews. It's a good class overall, you just really need to focus on staying on top of the assignments because even a couple late assignments can really damage your grade.
Professor Hill is one of the most caring professors I have had at BYU. I found his material easy to understand because his lectures are basically straight from his textbook--which is cheap! All four tests were open-note, open-book and there was always a study guide and a math review to help you study. I always felt well prepared and cared for.
Dr. Hill and SFL 260 are excellent. The information is very applicable to your financial knowledge and wellbeing and the assignments are valuable. There is a lot of homework, discussions, quizzes, and assignments, so plan accordingly. It is easy to fall behind, especially if taking the online version of the class.
Overall, I loved taking SFL 260 from Professor Hill! He is a sweet man and really knowledgeable on finances! I learned so much from this course that I can actually use in my everyday life! There were few large assignments, weekly quizzes (open note and open book), and four exams (also open note, open book). Highly recommend taking this course!
He is awesome! Super genuine and helpful and explains everything really clearly. I am not good at math but his lectures and course setup was really organized so I didn't have too much trouble. This class was so beneficial for my life! Would definitely take if you want to learn the basics of finance!
He was so engaging and cares so much about his students! Would highly recommend!
This was probably the most practical class I have taken in my life. It has prepared me to be able to handle my finances well and know what I'm doing with many big life decisions regarding money. I would recommend this class to anyone as it is not too hard and very rewarding.
This class was extremely helpful for every day life! Every day I have already found myself applying principles and tips that he gave. There is quite a bit of homework, but it is all helpful if you give it the time it needs. Some math concepts are a little complex, but the study guides help a ton. Professor Hill is a very lovable person!
Professor Hill was great and so wholesome. The lectures are usually commentary/review on the textbook--put them on 1.75x speed because he speaks slowly. If you've already gotten your math GE the class could be a bit more demanding, but I can't complain about open book exams. You'll learn SO much and every assignment applies to your real life.
Professor Hill is great! He is very knowledgeable about the material and is willing to answer any questions. Every unit is useful and has real-life applications. The course is structured well and there are a lot of available resources for learning. The class has many assignments, but they don't usually take too long.
Learned useful information that can be applied no matter your major. Watched all the lectures at 2x speed. The assignments are application based but are very helpful.
Dr. Hill's SFL 260 class has been the most useful class I've taken at BYU to help me live a stable, happy life. The class nicely structured with weekly lectures, quizzes, and homework assignments. Even though there are kind of a lot of assignments, they're all easy and there are so many TA's available to help!
Professor Hill is kind, caring, and interesting. SFL 260 was one of the most useful courses that I took at BYU. Because of it, we are now actively investing and saving for retirement, and I'm not afraid to spend money anymore because we have a set budget that we stick to every month. I loved Professor Hill and would take a class from him again!
Great professor. This class was so helpful and I learned so much about Family Finances. Professor Hill was so caring and you can tell he loves the students!
Great professor, just a lot of math if your okay with that.
Great class. Learn a lot of helpful information but is also designed for you to succeed. There is an online discussion and open note quiz each week plus a few easy but good assignments that don't take too long. 4 tests total - all open note/book with lots of materials given to help. Offers a good amount of extra credit as well. 10/10 class.
Dr. Hill is a very kind professor. Sometimes his lectures seem long and he doesn't discuss how to do the math that is included in the quizzes and tests. You have to work through that yourself, but it isn't that bad and there are plenty of TA's to help you. This class was very easy and you learned some great life skills that are ACTUALLY useful.
Professor Hill is fantastic, his course contains lifelong beneficial information and he truly cares about the success of each of his students.
Doctor Hill is an amazing professor! He only has one more semester before he retires so take it before he leaves! He loves what he does and always is ready to share his financial experiences!
Professor Hill does a great job of teaching every thing about finance that any normal person would need to know. Love his principle of financial stewardship. His units on investing are especially helpful. I wish I had taken this class years ago. So applicable. Everyone at BYU needs to take this class.
Jeff Hill's class is awesome! He is so insightful and has lots of great advice and experience. I would recommend taking this class online because everything is due Saturday instead of Wednesday night. You will only get out what you put into it. Lots of busy work but it is all applicable and helpful.
I'm very glad to have taken this class. There is great and applicable information shared about basic personal finances taught in an easy manner. I liked the readings assigned and the tests are open book and open note which is honestly the best way to learn. Stay on top of the assignments, but they are pretty easy and useful.
This was Professor Hill's last semester so I don't think people will be able to take another class from him. I had to watch his videos at 2x speed because he was a slow talker, but his principles and examples on how to apply them are spot on. I loved the course and will forever continue to use them.
What a class. I felt pretty confident about finances already going into the class, but I was surprised by how much I learned! Lots of super applicable stuff. It's the kind of elective you want-easy, interesting, and valuable. Highly recommend.
Professor Hill genuinely cares about each student and their learning. You can tell by the way he leaves so much time for questions and takes care in responding. He also is good at staying up-to-date on the best financial practices and giving you current rates for mortgages and loans and all that. He's an awesome professor.
rough class as a freshman who knows little about finance, would recommend taking it when you are getting ready to buy your own house and are married. super good though!
Dr. Hill is such a funny, genuine man. We had class once a week because it was blended, and we learned all the course work online (takes 2-3 hours a week). Dr. Hill tells you not to take notes in class, and he mainly retells stories from the online lectures. I still came to class every week though because Dr. Hill lifts your spirits always.
One of the most useful classes I have taken at BYU. Prof. Hill does a great job explaining everything and helping students learn what they need to so they can be wise financial stewards. Some weeks the class loads is heavy so just plan ahead. The tests can be long but resources are provided to help you do your best and feel prepared.
Professor Hill was great! The class was pretty manageable to do and was extremely interesting. I learned a lot! Highly recommend.
Loved this class! It was super helpful, and the professor was really nice.
He is a lively guy who teaches you the most important financial things you ought to know in life.
Take this class! It is the most practical course at BYU, as Dr. Hill will let you know. You will learn so much more about finances than you ever thought you could know -- plus some! This course is great for any marital status and you certainly don't have to have a family to benefit from Family Finance. You won't regret taking this course.
I really enjoyed taking this class! Dr. Hill is super knowledgable and you learn a lot of useful skills. The textbook was online and he had open-note, open book quizzes and tests. The TA's were super helpful as well and always responded fairly quickly. This class comes highly recommended!
Dr. Hill is amazing! The lectures covered the online material over again, so it was repetitive, but a very useful class and very applicable. Dr. Hill cares deeply about the subject and his students.
I learned so much from Dr. Hill! Winter 2023 is his last semester of teaching so don't miss out!
Jeff really cares about his students and preparing them for real world financial responsibilities. Very useful course if you want to know more about debt/ credit/ budgeting/ investing. Very easy class, would recommend.
This is the first class I've ever taken where I truly feel like I will use and apply the information in my life. Don't go into it thinking it will be an easy A, there is definitely lots of work and lots of math, but Dr. Hill is very kind and the course is set up very well. Take this class from him while you still have the chance!
Professor Hill is very kind and wise. Class time was always fun and all of the things we learned were very practical. The tests and quizzes were pretty hard, though! Definitely do your readings and practice the math.
Dr. Hill cares about your financial education and is excited to help you become a good financial steward. His class is one of the most practical and applicable classes I have ever taken.
Dr. Hill was the best! This class was one of the best classes I have taken at BYU and I have been able to apply so much. 10/10 class. I would recommend this class to every student at BYU. Pretty light workload as well.
I loved this class! I really enjoyed the lectures and how Professor Hill also posts all of the lectures and materials on canvas each week.
Professor Hill is amazing!! It's sad that next semester is his last at BYU... I took a blended course. All of his tests and quizzes and open-book open-note, so not too difficult. He cares about his students and always relates what he teaches to eternal principles. 11/10 would recommend!
Professor Hill is great! I feel much more equipped to tackle financial matters in the future.
Great professor and great class. I had some things come up later in the semester so I de-prioritized this class somewhat, but it's an easy class to get at least a "B" in if you do every assignment. Dr. Hill is actively involved all semester with his students and really wants you to succeed. The lessons and assignments are pragmatically useful.
Loved the class, full of important and applicable information you can use daily. assignments were real world and the tests were well prepared for.
This class was great, it covered a lot of topics that like insurance, buying a car, buying a house, budgeting... etc. I really enjoyed it. I took the blended class and sometimes I would miss little assignments here and there just from not being as on top of it as I should have which was a bummer but overall if you are organized you can do great.
I took this class completely online but still loved it and Professor Hill! I also took Marriage Prep from his wife and they are power teachers and a power couple! I will use what they've taught me forever! Dr. Hill made things simple to understand and provided tons of resources for help on assignments and exams (they're open book!).
Great class from Professor Hill, he has lots of good advice. So much good financial knowledge for adulting!
he connects well with his students
Class was pretty easy, not overwhelming, and applicable to real life. Dr. Hill is really good at breaking down the material into manageable and understandable pieces each week. The math is pretty simple, and all tests and quizzes are open note and open book.
Honestly loved this class and professor. The math was frustrating, but that's because math is usually frustrating to me! Professor Hill is a truly good man and I'm grateful I was able to learn from him and the way he lives his life.
Honestly such a good class. The math was frustrating... but that's probably because math is always frustrating to me. At least the math is totally useful! Professor Hill is a truly good person and I am grateful that I was able to learn from him this semester. I love that I was able to learn about how to have a family in his class.
Dr. Hill is great at making the lecture material relatable and easy to understand. As someone who went into the class with very little financial education, I felt that he was able to deliver the course content in a way that was both challenging and approachable.
this class is such a useful class at BYU. However I felt like it wasn't as helpful as it could have been- I wish it had gone more into insurance and what you can do with what kind of coverage. But if you're wanting to learn how to invest and be prepared for retirement, this is such a good class!
Jeff Hill was so funny and always kept his students engaged. It can be hard for me to focus in my online classes but I was always interested in what Jeff had to say. I also enjoyed doing all the homework and projects because they were things that I would definitely be applying in my marriage.
The class is easy, but taking it online makes it easier to forget about assignments/procrastinate. I would recommend taking it in person.
Dr. Hill's class was amazing! I learned so much about finances this semester and I loved how he always tied in a spiritual lesson to each one of his lectures. The tests weren't super hard, but definitely study for them and it will be easier. There are a lot of papers and assignments, so make sure to turn in everything on time.
He was awesome and his teaching was very clear and full of personality. This class was great!
Great professor, really enjoyed his lectures. A fair amount of reading and discussion boards every week. Very manageable work load.
Great lecturer. Learned a lot of valuable things in his class like spend your time, money and talents on the things that are important to you in order to have joy, and invest every month
Family Finance is amazing! It teaches so many principles with real life application that everyone should know! It is not a hard class but it for sure requires about 2 hours of work every week! Not hard but plan schedule accordingly!
I loved my time taking SFL 260 with Jeff Hill. He is a great instructor, has a lot of experience on the topic and he cares about his students. I love the design of the course and how you learn in relaxed environment. I would definitely take this class again!
Best teacher! So nice and so funny!! Also, easy class! The math part wasn't as hard as I thought it would be! Everything is open note!
Very passionate about what he teaches, cares a lot about his students. Lots of information and resources.
Professor Hill is an amazing lecturer. I took the hybrid version of his course. Though attendance wasn't mandatory, I still enjoyed attending because lectures were engaging and filled with fun stories. There are condensed lectures online. Weekly online quizzes were easy. Quizzes and tests were open-book. Learned a lot nonetheless. Highly recommend!
Great professor who is enthusiastic about what he teaches. Very organized and knows his stuff well. I took the hybrid format (online and in-person), which was excellent because his organization on Canvas is easy to navigate and everything you need to know is clearly laid out and available. Most useful class I have ever taken at BYU.
*For Dr. Hill Sr., not his son. Not sure which RMP page is his.* Dr. Hill knows his stuff! He cares about our well-being. Biggest issue: way too much math hw. Maybe because I didn't take this for a Math GE but rather to learn about family finance (the name of the class), but I was less-than-thrilled about how much math busy work there was.
I loved this class! Professor Hill is a very passionate teacher and I learned a lot. Some weeks you had WAY more homework than others but overall it was pretty well spaced out. If you put in the time you'll do well.
Dr. Hill was amazing!! SFL 260 was really helpful and I learned a lot of really important things about finances. I think this class should be required for everyone because the information is so useful. Some assignments were a little long but overall it was fair! The tests were open book/notes so you could pretty much find every answer. :)
Jeff Hill was so nice and such a great teacher. I loved his class, and he taught me so many great things about family life. He was very easy, and very likeable.
He is the sweetest soul! He cares deeply about teaching finances because he wants students to do well in school and in life. I learned a lot from him - in his lectures and from his example. I felt more confident with facing the future because of his optimism for life and faith in us and Jesus Christ. His course is structured so all could succeed.
Professor Hill is a sweetheart. His class was the easiest I've taken at BYU thus far. There is an attendance quiz each class period and there is a group project and some other smaller projects. I never spend more than an hour outside of class preparing for class or doing homework for class a week. Highly recommend!
Such a fun and engaging class! The content is very applicable to our lives, and Dr. Hill did a wonderful job of sharing lots of personal stories to teach the content. Lots of readings and you have to work with a group throughout the semester on some assignments, but we didn't have any tests which was awesome!
Professor Hill is such a genuinely good guy. He loves to share stories from his life and others, and tries to get to know the people in his class.
Class was actually really useful to get to understand finances better! It was pretty easy too! Just lots of assignments that take time, and there was a lot of classes that were really off topic that seemed more fitted for a sexuality class.
This professor is amazing! Class is entertaining and I learn a lot.
SFL 260 is a very helpful class if you are about to get married or you are starting to have kids. It has some of assignments that can feel like busy work if you aren't quite at this stage of life yet.
This class helped me understand important life skills like how to create and maintain a budget, how taxes work, and what kind of life insurance I need. Anyone who wants to learn more about finances they will use every day of their lives, I recommend this class.
Dr. Hill was great! What he taught was very helpful information and skills needed for managing finances well. The assignments were practical and offered personally relevant application of what was taught in class.
The class is super fun and engaging. Hill does a good job teaching the material.
Dr. Hill is a very kind man who loves finance in relation to families and cares about the work he does. He told fun stories and had fun lectures!
I learned a lot of really good things that will help me in my everyday life and in the future. I did think the class was a little heavy on assignments and tests.
You will learn a lot of things in this class that you will remember for the rest of your life.
Dr. Hill, and SFL 260, is absolutely amazing! I have loved this class and learning from him. He has been so influential in my understanding of family finance! He seems like a really great guy, and this class is invaluable. Take this class before you graduate!! also, all the tests are open note and open book
