Class is super easy. Professor is a fun guy and explains things clearly and concisely. Honestly values our opinions and performs experiments in class to get our opinions. Eye-opener with a lot of reading of the text book and online articles that are given. Lectures are interesting and interactive with students.
Professor is rude and sometimes disrespectful to students. Although these students sometimes deserve to e made fun of publicly it, it is not very professional. Course work and material aside, he is very short tempered
said he didn't want to be remembered as the 'phone guy' but thats exactly how i'll remember him. he's incredibly disrespectful to students. he has a zero tolerance policy for cell phone use because he thinks its disruptive, but whats more disruptive is him repeatedly stopping lecture to humiliate students and tell them to 'get lost'
I can tell that anthropology is Hoelle's passion. It was kind of annoying of him to interrupt class/lose temper repeatedly over cell-phone use during the quarter (& his constant use of "bro.") But class content was interesting. 2 exams, 1 paper (+iclicker q's.) He provides helpful study guides for exams. Hoelle just needs to learn to chill out.
Slides are clear & easy. He is very passionate and has had some really cool life experiences in the Peace Corps, but he bullies students. DON'T USE YOUR CELL PHONE IN THIS CLASS or he'll tell you to get lost. Don't have to read book really but HAVE to read articles for the tests.
Has a strict cell phone policy- so be warned. However he is very passionate about what he does and wants to be a mentor for students who want to get into the field. Tests were fair and included almost all of the readings. iClickers were used for participation and attendance. He has a good sense of humor and is also very good looking.
Belongs in a high school. Acts childish and treats students like children. Shamelessly wastes time complaining about class conduct or reminiscing about (totally irrelevant) personal experience in the field. Lectures are excruciatingly slow, dull, unclear, and imprecise to the point of meaninglessness: 80% of sentences end with "to some extent".
It's not that hard to stay off your phone in class. I took this class because I couldn't get anything else, and it ended up being my favorite class that quarter because he was so good. He's really helpful, and he has you write interesting papers. I wish I could take another with him, but I have to take classes in my major now =(
TERRIBLE professor. Spent all of class obsessing over people using their phones and laptops instead of listening. He would kick people out all the time for not paying attention or sleeping. Attendance was mandatory because of iclicker questions. If I'd actually studied I could have easily gotten an A.
Amazing Professor!! So Helpful! There is a lot of small work every week, however, as long as you check gaucho every week and stay on top of it, it is easy and very interesting. You have a finally project but can do whatever you want with it, fun! He made this class so interesting and really tried relating to his students!!
This has been my favorite class since I've been at UCSB. He's strict about cell phone use and sleeping, but makes the class so interesting. Everything is related to IV/UCSB lifestyle. I definitely recommend this class!
Great professor, take a class with him you wont regret it!
Really interesting class (I'm a Globl major). He's passionate and knowledgeable about the material. The text is pretty easy reading. Fun research project about halfway through the quarter. Need an iclicker for attendance. He can be funny in an awkward kind of way. A couple easy online quizzes and an at-home midterm(2 write-ups). Mult choice final.
Interesting Class, attendance is somewhat mandatory because of iclicker points. Most of the quizzes are taken online except for the final. He can also be awkward at times when he tries to be funny, but it makes the class a lot more enjoyable.
It's a good class. I thought lecture was pointless because he read off the slides, but just go until you get credit for 8 iclicker days. The midterms and projects he has you do, which are 40 percent of your grade, are super interesting. He is a nice guy and super chill as long as you don't text in class. You do that, bye bye 15 percent of grade.
This is one of the best GE classes you can take! It was super interesting and he related most topics back to IV, so they were easy to remember. The class isn't hard and the tests are easy if you do the readings (which are pretty manageable). He makes the class really fun and is an amazing and hilarious lecturer!
Professor Hoelle made lectures very interesting by relating to us, as students, and the culture of Isla Vista. One thing I would definitely recommend is to do all the readings, it'll make the tests way easier.. I didn't do any and received a B in the class. Also, don't be on your phone while lecture, there's a strict cell phone policy.
I really liked Hoelle--he has a super dry sense of humor, and he tries to make his lessons and PPTs funnier. He's really into the subject, and brings a lot of his own experiences with the Peace Corps to the lessons. Honestly, you don't need the text book, but you should definitely do the online readings.
Great professor, he clearly cares for his students and is willing to go above and beyond for them if they show interest! His lectures are very entertaining it is not to difficult to pay attention because the subjects are very interesting!
I was taking this class for a GE and didn't expect much out of the class, but by the end of the class, I was very much interested in anthropology. Though it isn't my major, I would love to learn more about it, and it gives people a sense of awareness of other cultures around the world.
I loved his teaching style. He made class very interesting and worth attending. I didn't read much and I got a B. Just pay attention in class. Warning- strict phone policy.
Class worth taking! Hoelle is invested and interesting and keeps lectures interactive and easy going. Come to class, pay attention, do the reading, you'll pass!
Take this class. You can tell that he loves the topic that he is teaching and he tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible. He's kind of awkward funny, which makes it even more funny. If you just read and go to lectures, you'll be fine. There's a research paper and 4 20 questions exams but its pretty easy.
Funny, engaging lecture. Interesting material about humans as a whole. There is a paper/project to do that you should not procrastinate on because you need interviews & stuff. I wish I went to office hours because he's funny. Don't use your phone! you will watch "what does the fox say" in class.
This class is an easy A and an even easier B. No midterm and the final is optional, he gives out four "quarterly" exams instead. There are 2 papers which are fair. iClicker is used for participation points during lecture and do NOT let him catch you on your phone or you can say bye to 20% of your grade. He made lectures funny and enjoyable.
Great professor! Would definitely take again because he was so awkward and funny which made the lectures more engaging. He gave out some pretty crazy prizes to his students (one got a bootleg PlayStation from Guatemala) because he really likes seeing his students laugh. Quizzes were fair and the research project is completely doable. Does iClicker.
I loved Jeffrey. This is a class that I actually looked forward to going to. Its an easy GE and its almost always an interesting and humorous lecture. Dr. Hoelle has a sort of awkward sense of humor. He's a great professor. And I would absolutely take one of his courses again. He made me rethink my major and consider a career in anthropology!
Funny professor. Not too hard of a GE
Really enjoyed going to lecture, Hoelle rocks! Take this class if you have the chance.
Really cool professor, definitely recommend if you're taking this as a GE and you want an easy class. He's funny and interacts with the audience. DON'T go on your phone during lecture. Kinda weird when it comes to taking notes on your laptop. Easy going guy, showed pics from when he was a teenager doing Peace Corps and he was lowkey hot.
Hoelle is definitely one of my favorite professors! He's so funny and very well informed on what he's teaching. He did work in Brazil so he knows from a personal perceptive on what he's lecturing
Hoelle was super funny and awkward, but in a very good way. He loves what he teaches and shares about relevant outside experiences, research, and travels that relate to the content in the course. Super funny, tests are a breeze if you pay attention and read. Overall just a really chill and cool guy.
Hoelle was a fun prof, he spends a lot of the lecture time talking about himself and those stories are not quizzed. Do NOT use your phone during lecture and always sit in the back 4 rows or front 3 rows when you are typing notes on your phone. He has a funny sense of humor and the last few lectures are lot of fun. Not a super easy GE but fun.
So freaking hilarious. I loved lecture! Also material was super interesting and eye opening. A great introductory anthropology class! Also its an easy A. 10/10 would recommend
Prof. Hoelle is very awkwardly humorous. BTW if you use cell phones during class time, you'll lose your existence in the universe.
Prof Hoelle is great, puts the already interesting coursework into easily understandable terms and has fun while doing it. Four small "quizzes" instead of midterms, and an optional final at the end. The project is easy (you can just BS all the "data" from people you interview etc.), if you actually do it legit you'll probably get a better grade.
Funny lectures, lots of interactive iClicker questions. Has 4 small quizzes (some online and some in class) and an optional final at the end. One research paper that's pretty easy. Gives prizes.
Hoelle was a bit of a jerk. He mocked students in class and he was really inconsiderate of students who had differing opinions from him. He even made my friend cry because of a harsh reply to an email she sent him. Talks too much about his own research. He definitely has his funny moments, but they don't compensate. iClicker, readings matter.
Funny guy who really cares about what he's teaching. Lectures are engaging and easy to keep up with. A lot of work in the class (papers, exams, film analysis, good amount of reading) but overall interesting. leaves you with a new perspective. DON'T USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS or you will regret your existence (but other than that he's a cool guy!)
Funny professor who relates lectures to the community! 2 papers, occasional film notes, online midterm and final. Really interesting lectures that are easy to understand and will provide you with a lot of insight. He has some rules about where you can sit to use your laptops and you can't use your phone in class! iClicker used 8 times
Jeff is a pretty good teacher, in math 2 you dont really learn anything but you dont have to do much either. Hes also pretty funny and tries to keep things interesting
Really great professor, passionate about what he is teaching. He says you need the textbook but I did good without it. Just pay attention in lecture and take good notes. He has a strict phone policy and he WILL call you out if you're on your phone and tell you to leave.
I really loved this class and I'm glad I had Hoelle. Lecture has clicker so it's mandatory but I didn't mind because he makes lectures fun. During the midterms and finals he always puts down funny options for the multiple choice answers which makes them more enjoyable to take. He gets the crowd involved and it's always really awkwardly funny. 10/10
Hoelle was good. Lectures were dry at times, but the interactive iclicker questions made it a little more interesting. DO NOT use your phone in class. 2 short papers and 2 exams. My TA was mediocre at the most and she graded hard on the papers. Exams are tested on lecture, weekly readings, and brazil lol
Hoelle is an okay professor, but the class he teaches is really good. I especially enjoyed the readings and the papers.
Hoelle's lectures were very thorough and interesting. The papers are relatively easy and the readings are manageable. Also, it is important that you sit in the rows he assigned for "laptops" and that you DO NOT pull out your phone.
Hoelle was a great professor. His lectures are engaging and informative and lecture slides are posted. He really tries to relate things to IV culture and us as students. There is an award ceremony at the end of the class, with some "fetch" prizes, as he would say. Solid class; I don't usually like social science but this was very interesting.
Prof Hoelle is hilarious & makes the class fun. You can tell he's really passionate about teaching other cultures & respecting other people. His class is super easy as long as you attend his lectures (i-clicker). He interacts w/ his students in his lectures. He cares more about students learning about the world around them than grades. Great Class!
tbh i really didn't like jeff, he was annoying about technology and the way he had his TA's grade papers was rude. his lectures are sometimes funny? but the class is honestly a chore. easy to pass though
Class was pretty easy but SO BORING, which affected my grade. He's annoying about technology. His tests were textbook heavy. I went to his office hours and he was rude.
Can be extremely rude, he is funny but that is the only redeeming aspect to his personality. Unless everything goes his way he seems to throw tantrums. No using laptops to take notes in class, unless you directly message him to "accommodate you". He yelled at a student that forgot this rule on the second lecture.
Jeff had amazing lectures, different from the usual good speaker. He'd walk around and talk to students to demonstrate concepts. He's also super funny. The class's material itself is pretty straightforward too.
Super easy. Hoelle rambles a bit and tbh I kind of never knew what was going on and I still got a good grade lol. Two easy papers, one midterm, and an online final. Good if you want an easy GE. Hoelle is actually pretty hilarious and has so many weird things he brings to class, so the experience will be interesting at least.
Professor Hoelle's class was by far my favorite class at UCSB! He is very funny and he makes lectures interesting, I looked forward to going every week. There was 1 midterm, 2 short papers, and the final was online. The midterm and final were based mostly on lecture discussions and outside class readings. Overall a great professor!
He is able to make class interesting and tries to make connections with students to make concepts easier to understand. His lectures are pretty interactive, but it's important to stay focused and off your phone. The papers aren't difficult, but I recommend getting your TA to look it over, otherwise, you might not get an A (hard graders).
I never bought or read from the textbook or read any of the articles he posted on Gauchospace. I just studied my lecture notes BARELY before the midterm and final (and the final exam was online), put a good amount of effort into the 2 papers (which were short), and I finished with an 86%. I recommend taking if you just want an easy class to pass.
This class was super laidback and really enjoyable. Weekly meetings on Zoom and attendance was taken. Read his book which was interesting. Had fun assignments, like a film analysis. Gives study guides for tests. Very approachable and respects his students. I recommend this class!
This class felt more like a high school English class then an Anthropology class about the Amazon. The zoom meetings were pretty much just a discussion of feelings and typical Marxist jargon. What turned me off was that the text for this class was written by him so we kinda just gave him a bonus when all the class bought it on Amazon
Very kind and funny; he makes lectures fun to listen to while still teaching the important info. He interacts with students during lecture and holds fun polls about the content to engage. There is a textbook but it's very easy to understand and clear, and he goes over the readings in class to further expand on them. Excellent deadpan humor
was chill he's just always mumbling. needs to speak louder
If you wont put in the time for reading don't take this class. Even if you cheat on tests that were online, you won't pass. I guarantee it. Lectures when he was in a silly mood was fun. Testbook costs money and you need it for the class. I didn't buy it but passed. Take notes in lecture from what he says.
I absolutely loved professor Hoelle, I felt that his lectures were engaging, funny, and extremely informational. The textbook itself also helped a lot for the final. The papers were interesting topics and I all together enjoyed this class.
My 2nd class with Hoelle = Amazing! I always looked forward to class and left the classroom with not only information but information I cared about. Grades were based on attendance, weekly responses, two exams and two short papers. Expectations were clear and the workload was easy to manage. Would take again a million times :)
thought this was an easy a but no.boring concepts. 2 essays and 2 tests. online tests but time limit was hard. overall hard since the questions arent pure memorization, but application questions. ta grades papers so make sure to get a good ta. my ta graded harshly which is bs for an intro class :( will be taking pass/no pass, impossible to get an A
Go to Lectures and sections because he grades participation. There were two online exams and two writing assignments that were heavily graded. Look out for extra credit opportunities because they can help you boost your grade. Overall it shows that he really cares about the course and loves to talk about the research he conducted in Brazil.
He's nice and a dec teacher, but too hard for a GE. TA's grade the 2 papers and give no rubric or grading guidelines. The prof breezes through content to get to his extra credit opp which involve sending students on scavenger hunts across IV. Like why tf am I sitting watching mfs try to water bend on stage in lecture while I got a B in the class.
Hoelle is a scattered, mid-tier professor. His lectures make little sense, and rarely educate you on the real topic. He loves to talk about himself and his own research, even when irrelevant. He wasn't horrible, wasn't great either. Boring class topics, n be prepared to read. TA's don't really care either. Overall, 4/10. Wouldn't take again.
There were only 2 papers and a midterm and final but not many graded things. The criteria was confusing for the papers, and the TAs didn't elaborate on them or the given grades. The lecture was either really interesting or really boring. Both the midterm and final were both multiple-choice.
Two papers with very vague guidelines that the TA didn't really seem to know much about. Lectures are boring and SO disorganized. He is nice and funny though. Exams were both online and were an 7/10 difficulty. But I still survived w/ an A. Also talk a lot in section or else you will get docked 10% in participation for some reason.
Prof is chill. TA was the #1 opp. Ridiculous grader, bad instructor, no rubrics/references. Didn't attend lectures, ran through the slides the night before and got ~89% average on the exams. Scraped by with an A. Rating this as a 5/5 difficulty just because of how ridiculous the paper grading was in the context of what this class is. Like bro..
Professor Hoelle was probably one of the best professors I have had here at UCSB. He is very caring and there is two papers for the class, but its only 750 words and the topic is very interesting and fun. Office hours were really helpful for the papers and made them easy. Other than that there is a bit of reading but never did them and still passed
There were no clear guidelines or rubric for the 2 papers and your grade basically depended on how good and nice your ta is. The exams were online but were questionable since it involved applications of concepts and sometimes there were multiple correct answers even tho he said only one is right. One of the worst profs at UCSB. He rambled a lot
Professor Hoelle is a treat. You can tell he genuinely cares about his research and his students. His class is relatively easy but honestly fun. We watched movies relating to the Amazon. Reading is important as he uses the readings in the midterm and final. I highly recommend taking this class
Awesome course and material, you can tell he cares deeply about the subject matter and weaves his own research with the course topic in a super cool way. Weekly discussions, couple quizzes, a midterm and a final that are a breeze if you attend lecture and do the assigned readings. Can't recommend this course enough.
Very stiff policy on attendance as both lecture and section are mandatory. Combined with very boring, monotone lectures where he talks about his own research a lot. You are recommended to purchase a textbook that he has written in addition to outside readings. Takes a fascinating subject and makes it arduously boring. Seems very full of himself.
I love Professor Hoelle!!! Not only is he one of the funniest professors I've ever had, he is super fair and his class is really interesting. Very basic college course in terms of difficulty and expectations. I would 100% take this class or any class with Hoelle again, he's really chill and so funny!
He is funny and although lectures can be a bit boring at times, is a great dude and teaches the class well. Only 2 essays and 2 exams, but definitely need to go to lectures for iclickers. I liked how the light reflected off his bald head.
Funny, lectures sometimes boring and amusing, 2 essays and 2 exams make up the grade with some extra credit assignments. Deeply cares for his field of anthropology and teaching it in a funny way with surveys, movies, lectures, and iClickers. We finally completed the legendary McRib at the end of class with fun prizes for participating students.
Complex topics made simple through his monotone yet humoristic style of lecturing. Not much to be graded on but as long as you attend lectures, midterm and final should be a breeze. Cell phone policy no longer applies. He does talk about his research in Brazil A LOT though, it's his way of connecting concepts so I won't complain. Overall great.
Easy class
funny dude...sunshine and rainbows until the the midterm...then the final. quote on quote if you attend the lectures and do the readings your totally fine for the tests. WRONG! the final was exact references to specific, niche lectures and work. professor hoelle is a G, just like why was it so difficult????
Did this class as a GE, definitely doable. Two papers, and in person midterm and online final. He claims the questions are general, but the questions were literally asking for exact answers from exact lectures and iclicker questions. There is an iclicker for attendance in every lecture, but only need to do a certain amount of them. Funny guy though.
prof was cool, just didn't care for the papers--word limit was too low and not sufficient amount to actually make your point. sections felt pointless and unnecessary. it wasn't a hard class, but if anthro isnt your thing it gets pretty boring. exams were so specific and had less than an hour to do them so kinda crazy
I really enjoyed Hoelle, he's probably the funniest professor I've had so far. Really enjoyed him as a person. However... lectures could get boring. Essays were also very strange, weirdly graded, and the word count was super limited so it was hard to get your point across/meet all the criteria. I'd recommend this class, pretty easy GE!
One of my favorite professors here. Really interesting guy with funny and engaging lectures. I would recommend this course to any of my friends. Relatively easy GE, 2 papers and 2 exams that weren't cumulative. Grading really depends on your TA but overall, the grading criteria was pretty straight forward.
Professor Hoelle is super nice and funny! The 2 essays are super easy especially if you have a good TA. The tests were honestly really hard but I managed to pull through with B's on both of them by studying the night before. No curve or negotiating your grade at the end of quarter. Class isn't that bad but I wouldn't take it again.
attend lectures as material in class and the readings are whats on the test. funny lectures but sometimes boring material
Lectures could get boring but overall it was a pretty chill class. Paper guidelines were vague and your grade just depended on your TA. Its a good ge requirement.
I really liked prof hoelle! he was really funny and engaging. lectures were a little boring but not bad. sections were mandatory and lecture occasionally had iclickers. There's two short papers but your grade really depends on who ur TA is. midterm was in person but the final was online and was way too long for the amount of time we were given.
Lot of the material on exams comes from lecture and textbook readings. Professor's lectures are interesting and his slides are useful, attendance is mandatory but only counts some of the iclickers so missing is not a big deal. 2 papers that are relatively easy.
