The bloody mess from his red sharpie on my final paper is still seething from the depths of my intellectual wounds. His unrelenteless teaching methodology transcends his horrid fashion sensibilities.
very interesting class; very smart prof!
oh my. this man is so incredibly good looking. he can lecture for hours and i dont ever get tired of listening to him. also, he is very intelligent, and passionate about his teachings.
Teaches all over the place and doesn't really know what he is covering so when exan time hits there is no study guide and you are going in blind. Your notes will be all over the place because he has students teach the class rather than himself. You will find it to be a very annyoing waste of time!!!!!
awesome teacher, tests EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY off of the review sheet, word for word. and hes a fun, easy going, laid back guy. but he hates stupid people, so dont act stupid in front of him. :)
The class material is scattered, everything is very unstructured. Exams cover everything that comes out of his mouth. It would really help if he gave study guides... but he doesn't! However, I recommend having your friend take him, so you can just adore his beauty without having to recieve the poor grade.
Looks like a Rock N Roll reject from the 80s. Jeff is unclear, and his lectures are unorganized. He tends to get off subject alot. Expects people to know the answer to EVERY question he asks, or he'll call you dumb.
DO NOT take this professor, he does not seem to know how to organize a lecture, but he sure fills up the whole friggin time slot. VERY unfair grader, notes all over the place, tries everything he can to trick students on exams and then grades very unfairly. when proven wrong, he still wont change grades on tests. monumental waste of time.
He is rediculously easy, and knows his stuff. He hates slackers though, so as long as you read your stuff and participate you are golden. His exams are right from the notes word for word. He is not too hard on the eyes either!
His lectures are unorganized. It's hard to tell if what he's saying is important to write down or not. So you write down everything and end up with a jumble of notes that don't make any sense. He's not helpful and seems a lit arrogant. It's good that US2000 is an easier course, or I would've been screwed.
Lectures were a mess, very disorganized, would often scribble concepts/ideas on board and then waywardly talk about something entirely unimportant. Exams were pretty easy, gives you comprehensive study guide. Overall, you get the impression this guy is way too busy to be teaching--often feel like the class comes as a distant second-->waste your $$?
Very Good, Nice teacher
I for one hated going to this class. The lectures were not organized at all. He just didn't seem to have put much time and effort into the class at all. Discussions were interesting sometimes, but majority of the time I sat in class wondering why the hell I was there.
i hated this class vry dul but the exams were easy as long as you forced yourself to go to class. i got an a in the class because i forced my self to sit in his class the walking tour was proablly the only interesting thing in this class. many of the topics if you did good in hs government and economics then you will be fine.
Okay first whoever said he is good looking PLEASE go to the eye doctor!!! This class should be called Urban put your _bleep_ to sleep! His lectures are disorganized, not to mention BORING. His tests are easy (but he still curves it). Oh did I mention BORING? Not a good teacher. Thinking about that class makes me want to go to sleep. zZzZZ (BORING!)
Very interseting and informal class. I enjoyed it. The walking tour was the best part learing about differnt building around campus. His test are scan. and he provides the sheets but if you miss the exam then its essay. He also has different speakers come and and discuss topics.
Very boring class, if you don't attend for lectures, don't bother attending exams cuz you will just fail. The class average on tests was around 50%(obviously the prof. is doing something wrong) then he curved it to a B-. Unorganized, boring, attendance = mandatory.I got an A, even though i got half the questions wrong on the test before the curve..
Horner is a laid back, easy going guy and his lectures tend to be kind of informal. Yeah you'll find the class boring if you dont have any interest in the subject, but if you have any slight interest in urban studies, you will enjoy this class. The tests are hard but he curves them generously. Take good notes and SHOW UP and you will get an A.
Show up, say something intellegent and relevant(not a good class for quiet types/lazy people), take good notes and you should get an A no problem. He is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, but tended to get frustrated when the students didn't always share it.
I passed this class by the grace of God.Don't miss class and read the material. He does not give study guides at all.You shouldnt take this if you have no interest in the subject.Overall he seems like a nice guy...we took a walking tour in the DEAD OF WINTER. It was awful and I almost died...other than that the class wasn't awful. Hes a nice guy.
Ok teacher, ok guy. i only wanna go to sleep within the last half hour of the entire 2hours i sit in class. material is ok/interesting. take this class if your interested in sitting, listening, and taking notes for a couple hours. over all i give is a 6 out of 10 and for ease a 8.2 out of 10
Easy class if you attend. The lectures are semi interesting. You take lots of notes, but his test are reletivley easy. I enjoyed the class. i had him for urban studies. I think he made history as interesting as it can be.
Grades on a curve, for good reason - everyone fails the tests. Class is taught via ppt presentations that dont really make sense, so you have to listen very carefully to rambling lectures. Even if you pay very close attention, exam questions often have little to do with what he talked about in class. I suggest becoming a mind-reader to do well.
All around good guy and great professor.
a lot of classes got cancelled. midterm, final, and 5000 word lit review, other than that no homework. questions for the midterm and final were directly out of lecture notes.
Corrected: 25% of grade is attendence. 25% mid-term. 25% Final exam. 25% lit review (5000 words). He does not grade harshly but you must get the work done and do the reading to participate in class discussion.
Really too bad I can't swear on here because my explanation would have been much better. Seriously it is almost like this guy wants you to fail. I recall when going over an exam him stating, "Wow, I'm impressed about 35% of you got this right." I had a doctor's note and he would not let me make up an exam. BEWARE!!!!!
I have mixed feeling about Jeff! I didn't have a great experience with him, but I didn't have a bad one. You will learn a lot with him, he is a great lecturer (boring at times), but his tests are VERY difficult. He is a good guy. Don't take him if you want an easy "A". The book is terrible too. My grade definitely does not reflect what I learned.
for the love of good gator, this prof is hot. get it get it. i better get my cha cha heels
What a Divine Prof. He gave elucidating lectures and even took us for a walk. You had to pay attention to his lectures and earn your grade. He is easy on your eyes too!
Definately wayyy too hard for an introductory class. Do not take if you have no interest in the subject. You will end up falling asleep and then getting screwed come test time. Good guy, knows his stuff. The tests are just extremely hard. Don't expect an A.
Jeff wrote me some great recommendation letters to law schools. I'm 2 for 2 so far on getting in. thanks, jeff
The best US professor I've had so far. He's a really fun guy and loves what he teaches. You have to show up, take notes and pay attention in class in order to get a good grade- but that should be expected in every class. Definitely an interesting class and I'd recommend it to anybody with interest in the subject. He's a great teacher.
Jeff is the best prof ever, hands down. There's really no way you could NOT learn a lot in his class. Make sure you do all your readings, because he WILL ask you about it. Really a great teacher, keeps you engaged on the subject and look forward to class. Prepares you will for the exams too. Righteous!
Very Good Professor.Very fair.Very Intresting Class.
Really fun prof. Keeps class interesting and fast moving. Great enthusiasm. Tough exams tho.
I loved US2000. I just wish that I had taken it during the summer or spring when it was in a smaller classroom rather than a 200-seat lecture hall. He knows his stuff pretty well and tries to make it interesting. The exams are pretty tough though.
Jeff is a great instructor. In fact, he's the best I have ever had at WSU. Anyone interested in urban planning/urban studies will love this class. He really knows his stuff, gives tremendously engaging lectures and makes the class something to look forward to. If you are looking for an easy "A"...look elsewhere. He raises the bar.
Not well organized. The only reason I did so well was because everybody else did so terrible(he curves exams). I don't feel like I learned much, and a lot of his test questions are bs. He won't ask you about a concept. He'll only expect you to remember who authored that concept, and other irrelevant information.
Professor Horner is a very nice.I took his class in the summer. He gives you 3 test that are worth 30 percent of your grade. You MUST come to class. Attendance is 10 percent of your grade. He give you the test questions four days the test . You must study. I learned a lot.
I personally did not like the way this class was taught. He would continually say, "not to portray my political opinion but..." and then he would ask test questions about his opinion. The tests are really hard but he curves them so much that it isn't really a big deal. He really knows his stuff though, if you can put politicas aside.
He does not really care about your attendance, But he is concern about your opinion. Really easy class. He curves the test and he just lectures alot. Recommendation is a DEF!
Great professor, very smart, he knows his stuff. He teaches from an unbiased standpoint.
Do NOT take him. He is not organized what so ever. He tells you when he will post items on blackboard and doesn't post them until two weeks after he promised to. He tells you what to study for the exam but nothing he tells us is on the exam. Very bad professor in my opinion.
Very nice guy personally but when it comes to teaching he is simply incompetent. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He is very unorganized and is late to class almost every day. His exams are taken from a random test generator and nothing he talks about in lecture or what is in the book is on the exam. BAD PROFESSOR!!!
Terrible Proffesor, Im sorry but truley horrible. I am disappointed to say, one of the worst professors ive had in this subject. Unorginzed, and non realistic when it comes to exams. Study guides are posted 2 days before exams, practice exam is posted with out awnser key. Test have absloustly nothing to do with the class or what he told us toreview
Honestly i do NOT like this professor. He is very hard, unorganized, not helpful. Tests are not easy at all. He hands out his study guides the night before the test and they aren't even helpful at all. I do NOT recommend thi professor to anyone.... DO NOT TAKE HIM!
TERRIBLE. All exams are based on lecture, the assigned readings cover minimal content that is on the exams. Exams are coherently confusing. Teacher consistently is tardy to class.
Prof. Horner is an excellent teacher. Every class I've taken with him I've learned a great deal - completely worth my time and tuition. Read your textbook(s), go to class, engage in class and you'll do fine. He doesn't teach to the lowest common denominator, so you'd better be prepared to show up and do some work.
There r 3(curved) attendance not mandatory but all exam questions r based on lecture. ppts and ecolectures r posted on blackboard. study guide is given 1 week in advance all exam q's r from the study guide. he has a study session day b4 exam (mandatory if u wanna get answers for study guide).hard to understand (useless to attend lec)skim the book
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Great professor. Gives great guidance, informative lectures, and has a huge knowledge base on the subject matter. If you have to work hard, the material is challenging, but you will get a lot out of his class. Difficult to get a hold of, but otherwise a great professor.
I didn't have much of an interest in this topic before taking the class, I was just trying to fulfill requirements. But I actually enjoyed it. There were 3 tests in the semester. He's obviously very passionate on the subject so the lectures are very interesting. Tests are straight forward if you listen to the lectures and read the powerpoints
3 essay style tests. tests provided one week before date. class was online so all ppt's and lectures were on blackboard. all essay questions are in ppt or textbook. Simply read the test question, look in the ppt or book and sum it up. Easy A (not the movie =D if you try a little bit. Nice guy, love that he provides the test one week before its due
Very insightful lectures. Read material and take notes
AMAZING! His lectures are so interesting and he really facilitates engagement. he loves what he does, clearly. He only has three exams and thats it for the whole semester and he really makes you work for the grade. There is a lot of reading but the texts are interesting and he is just, ugh so incredible i loved this class so much!
He's super enthused and intelligent, though he gets distracted pretty easily. The exams are nothing to sneeze at. They're really, really hard. There are three and they're short answer essay questions.
Although there was a lot of information that was dished out on every class. He understood that not could be retain but expected to at least know where to go to find out or know what your talking about on the exams.
Knows his stuff. Expect you to actually read assignments, pop quiz will tell all. Tests are easy if you keep up. If having problems with class assignment his door is always open - do not wait until the end to seek help.
Horner is very intelligent, and pretty funny. Definitely has a tendency to digress. He really cares about the subject. The exams are clearly defined and he gives you all of the questions a week ahead of time. But prepare to work your butt off, or make friends in the class, because the exams involve a lot of content.
Jeff is a great professor who cares a lot about the subject and expects students to be engaged! You will read a lot of books in this class so prepare to have your nose in a book at all times. He is funny and genuinely wants his students to do well but beware he expects that you WILL do your reading and will quiz on it.
Engage with this professor and do your readings and you will be just fine!
Jeff Horner will put you to sleep. He spends 20 minutes on each slide while rambling off personal anecdotes, then rushes through the last 8 slides in 15 minutes. This is a weekly occurrence,. The entire class is lectures, reading a dry text book, and three exams. He gives you the exam questions a week ahead, thankfully.
Syllabus states attendance isn't necessary but he'll make you pay if you don't attend. Your grade is based on 3 essay exams. You'll get over 25 potential questions and you'll only see 5-9 on exams. If you don't answer questions the way he wants or if you don't come to class, you won't do well. He's condescending, boring or both during lectures.
This class was so disorganized it was difficult to succeed. Horner was late in posting just about everything, and only taught us by making us rewatch his old lectures. I would not recommend this professor
If you're taking his online class, do your self a favor and at least familiarize yourself with the material. He's not gonna give you feedback and the grading makes no sense. The tests revolved around the reading or power points. Kinda like a scavenger hunt, annoying. I really thought I was gonna fail, but guess not. My grade was up in the air.
Prof Horner is a bit dry in the lecture dept but I was happy that he provides his lecture in various ways so that you can learn and study in a way that suits you (text lecture, powerpoint, and audio). Reading is a little heavy at first but then lightens up. Would take online again.
Worst Professor I have ever had, grade is based only on 3 exams. Often gets off topic in class and takes forever to get to the points you need to know for test.
Seems to be overall a good professor. The class was online and based out of only 3 exams. The exams were not timed and all of the answers can be found through powerpoints/ readings. The class didn't seem too stressful just be prepared to read a lot. He also makes you buy his book that he wrote. Very lenient and gave us extensions on our exams!
He tends to wait till the last minute or completely forgets to upload the necessary information to help with the tests. There are only 3 tests and that's it. SLOW to grade.
You'll either love his class or not. He's clear up front that your grade will come from only 3 exams. Attendance isn't required. He gives you 20 questions a week before each exam, and then 8 of them are on the test. If you can't manage your time well, it'll be very hard. Lectures are on Echo. He's a good lecturer, but sometimes goes on tangents
There is only 3 exams, which are difficult but he grades very tough. He tends to be more lenient if you go to class and participate, which I didn't. Very lecture heavy and boring, he often gets distracted. The class was harder than it needed to be, I was actually interested in urban studies before taking him.
Laughable at how late he would post materials needed to prepare for exams (not just study guides but actual readings or course material) and always had a condescending attitude when approached about it. Wayne state can do better, there are better professors out there. I'm pissed I wasted so much money on this class.
You don't take Professor Horner, he takes you. I learned more in his classes than in all my other ones. Very enthusiastic and entertaining,, highly recommended.
With only three exams and no other assignments this class was not hard, however, this professor made it the most frustrating class I have taken at WSU. He relies too much on unicheck; I am used to writing longer papers but he has insane essay requirements like ten pages and no resources can be used. He does not post lecture material on time
This professor is terrible does not post materials on time. Does not grade essays in a timely manner. Expects you to listen to badly recorded lectures. It is mainly endless papers however he relies too much on unicheck and doesn't do any grading by himself.
Professor Horners class is extremely lecture heavy! But dont worry. He uses Echo360 so you can always access recordings on canvas. However, You are only given 4 assignments that include 3 written exams and an essay. Throughout lecture i noticed that he rambles off topic a lot and is slightly condescending at tones. maybe he doesnt notice?
I've had Jeff a few times. He's a great professor and I enjoy his lectures. Beware of unexpected quizzes. He only grades on a few quizzes and midterm/final.
Have had him twice. Really great in class, gives good lectures, and prepares you very well for quizzes and exams. However, super inaccessible outside of class. Hardly responds to emails, and if he does, not in a timely manner. Also VERY slow to post grades. Really frustrating to take during the online month of COVID-19, but normally bearable.
Definitely would not take again. It was an elective but it was very difficult. Only based off of 3 exams and 1 paper. We have written approximately 10,000 words. The final exam was 3900. The paper was 1,500 words. It was a lot. He is very slow with grading and not great at responses. He seems nice, the class is just too much.
Jeff Horner with all due respect was one of the worst professors I've ever had at WSU. I am graduating and have still not experienced a professor with this much lack of respect for his job. You can't hear his Echo360 recordings. He did not grade our second exam (that's open-ended questions) until four days before uploading our final.
A great professor as he was a fair grader, really nice with his feedback, and a pretty funny guy. Tip: If taking online I would only wait to open up the lectures when he assigns the tests cause all you need to do is write stuff down for specific test questions, don't bother writing everything down. Tests are okay even though they're written exams.
Prof Horner is great. I learned a lot from the class and feel like I appreciate him more now than in the moment. He is disorganized, his lectures are long because he gets off-topic, and the quality is poor. Read the material, watch the lectures, and you will do fine. Don't take him if you're lazy or not interested in the class, but recommend him.
This Professor was one of the worst I've ever had at Wayne. He does seem nice but very very slow grader and has zero communication with his students. The subject is okay but the class is all over the place so be prepared to be stressed. He post-work is super late, bottom line don't be fooled by the ratings because Professor Jeff is the worst.
Fine prof but does near no grading on time. Legit didn't do the final and can still pass, but once took a month and called the responses "readable." I know people who had 3-4 assignments not graded when the final was released. Just like, don't bother. Take him if you need to, and the material is kinda interesting, but not worth the money.
The exams are honestly really easy as long as you watch the lectures beforehand. I studied for all three exams the night before and did well on all of them. The lectures are longwinded but not too bad and he doesn't care about attendance; you can watch recordings. Only problem is he takes ages to grade and reply to emails.
Not very communicative but a generally easy grader. Lectures would often be kind of unhelpful as they could be super long and occupied by him talking about something not necessarily relevant to the actual lecture topics. Assignments were generally relatively easy but could be pretty unclear at times.
Professor Horner can be a frustratingly slow grader and consistently misses his own deadlines and can be hard to access outside of class. However, he is extremely passionate/caring, and is willing to work with everyone. I've had him 4 times and have never heard of a classmate failing. Lecture heavy, but take good notes and you'll be ok. GREAT guy
Never grades assignments. Doesn't respond to emails. Failed to put in my final grade for weeks and cost me graduating on time. Too preoccupied by his own life...maybe should take some time off to deal with things.
urban studies .
Pay attention to his lectures, rewatch it before exams. The power points will not be enough, he gives most of the important information verbally, but also has a lot on the power point, so be ready to take good notes. He curves his exams. He uploads the readings so read those. Overall a good professor.
Prof. Horner knows his stuff! There are about 5 books that students will read over the course of the semester so get ready to read and know where your next book is coming from. His "pop quizzes" are not pop quizzes because he HEAVILY hints when there is going to be one next. Prof. Horner does not lecture using slides but rather a class discussion.
(US 4510: Cities and Regions) What a cool professor. You need to read, yes, but you'll learn so much. This class really put things in perspective for me, like what challenges I'll face as someone seeking to better the system. Just read the books, there will be 5, it'll be hard but worth it.
Prior to taking Horner's US Senior Capstone I was slightly on edge due to some of the negative comments posted. However, my experience in Professor Horner's class was extremely positive and found him to be one of the best Urban Studies professors at Wayne. I found him to be supportive, open to new ideas, and consistent in communications.
WORST PROF. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEWS. I took this class because it was required, why am I spending more time on these exam questions rather than my computer science classes. Take the class only if u actually have interest in urban planning otherwise you can find much better gen ed classes that are funner and less work.
Will ramble on about his personal life on and on every class peirod. Doesnt belive in letting students type exams even though they're short answer only, gives horrible quesitons to study that wont be on the test at all or anyhting related to what was talked about. Will not listen to feedback about chaning how he does exams even though he asks.
Jeff Horner is an extremely interesting lecturer and adds plenty of relevant examples from the surrounding community when discussing topics in the class.
Honestly, this is the worst class I've taken. Takes him WEEKS to grade exams, terrible rubrics to follow, gives 7 questions on each test and its 400 words or more. Last exam came up to 8 pages. Too much work for an intro class and elective. I have less work for my Capstone. Definitely would not recommend anyone to take this class.
Prof. Horner seems like a decent guy, but I can't recommend him. His main issue, I would say, is punctuality. He will say he is going to do something (for example, give a quiz next class, or post a study guide) and then just not do it. Also a tough grader.
One of my favorite professors at Wayne State. Is he off topic at times? Sure, but it's almost always relevant to the coursework in one way or another. I've taken a few classes with him in undergrad and can't recommend him enough.
Okay, this isn't the WORST class to take. lectures are 2 hrs long and class is graded based on three exams and a paper. Each exam (essay based) comes up to about 12 pages long. It is very long and tedious. What ticked me off is that I received a 97% in the class and the grade submitted to the university was an A-. The grading scale is very unfair.
Tough class with a lot of work. The professor takes forever to grade exams and assignments. But if you stay on top of the readings and take good notes in class, you can do well. Unstuck ai was super helpful for practice questions and study prep.
Seems to be a good guy.The lectures are long, but the information and stories can make it more "fun".The MAJOR downfall is that the class is graded on 4 assignments altogether. 7 questions, 4-600 words. Requirements are vague, and take an ungodly amount of time to reference back to lectures and readings. Listen to others, find something else. Please
