Good teacher, easy A in the class. 3 quizes for the whole semester (MCQ or fill in the blanks with only 8 question). 3 paper for the whole semester including final paper. No final Exam. Very interesting guy. NO HW at all (only reading). Class time is only for discussion. He's a very easy grader however attendance is important
He is a cool teacher, very intelligent and thought provoking. you will get as much out of the class as you put into it. nothing is a surprise, reading is expected and he is always available to answer questions and clarify things. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS. You will learn alot about other religions and actually get it.
he makes you read hundreds of pages of boring text and he is boring.

wonderful teacher... i love the way he teaches. He makes class fun and the way he talks makes everything so much easier to understand. He talks as if he was in a conversation and not in "lecture mode". Highly recommend Prof. Liss for Hum 7. Maybe not 8 since it's boring bible readings and stuff xD. Oh yea... I love his quizzes, exams and papers
I really enjoyed this class. His lectures were boring on some days but usually they were pretty interesting. He always tells you (or hints to you) whats going to be on the quiz/test. Just go to class and listen to his lectures and you'll get an A for sure. Although he does assign pages to read, i did fine without reading any of it! ^^
Take Jeff. You won't regret it.
Interesting subject and well presented. Not boring at all, if you want to learn about world religions. Random quizzes, but he will always give a hint. 2 papers in semester. Good, passionate teacher, I wish he was full time.
He is fun and and helpfull !! His lectures are very clear and interesting.
This guy is super cool and down to earth. May seem scary at first, but very nice and very open to anything. He is also very cute too--wish he was gay, oh well. Great guy over all, take his class!
he is a good teacher. the only bad thing is he lectures ALL THE TIME which gets kind of boring sometimes. he is funny & and answers questions throughly. i would take him for sure if you are interested in learning about different religions. if you decide to take his class, do so with a friend. easy to communicate with him through email & Office hrs
Great teacher. Makes hard/confusing subjects tangible. He's super funny- great personality. One of the best teachers I've had. Take him!!!
English, grammar, and writing papers in the class is of EXTREME importance! Tests are difficult because they do include a written portion. If you are not up for a writing and reading intense class, Be Aware that it is, BUT Jeff is so cool, non judgemental and understanding if you are having difficulties in his class. HANDS DOWN THE BEST TEACHER I H
Great class! Cool dude. Jus make sure you gotz good, grammr!
Lectures are kind of boring. He doesn't write good notes on the board so you have to pay close attention to what he is saying. Pop quiz for every chapter; must attend two self-guided field trips and do two essays. He is VERY STRICT on essay format and grammer, as well as source citations. He is a funny teacher and is very interested in his subject.
You need to attend every single one of his classes to get a good grade. Pop quizzes/test are easy. Lectures are extremely boring. The notes he write on the board are useless. Requires 3 Art Journal and a final paper. A midterm test (not too bad) and a final (OK). You'll read a lot in his class and you will need to go to museums at least 3 times.
jeff was awesome! this semester i needed extra help and he was there to support me. though i have an incomplete in the class is willing to work with me to make my grade a better one! he is funny as hell and makes his lecture intresting, that is if u listen to him!
taking his summer class. he's really cool and funny during lectures. he jots stuff down on the board but it's not useful information. the quizzes and midterm is not hard. but you must read the books to do the quizzes... he will go over the novels in class though.
Took him over the summer, attendance is quite important, he will be a bit lenient if you have a legit reason, but otherwise allows no more than four absences. No textbook, just 3-4 novels. Overall tests were okay, easy if you read the material. Just go to class and read the books he assigns and its an Easy B lol.
Humanities, 7 and 12. Real cool guy. One of my favorite professors here. He was a big influence on me, I even had considered changing my major, astronomy/astrophysics, after taking his classes. Thanks for two great semesters!
For HUM 12: A Funny and down-to-earth guy. Grades are based on: quizzes, art journals, other small assignment, midterm, a literary criticism paper, and final. He grades generously. Even though the class is titled "Music/Arts/Literature," the class focuses mostly on literature.
Music, Art, and Literature! Fun right? Not so much with him. Harsh grader. Not clear on what he expects until after he grades you. Critiques you, but does not allow a rewrite..well, whats the point then. I have st8 A's in all my English classed up to 1B, but not with him. This is actually a writing class.
Lit 7: World Religions - Great Teacher, relates well to students and is funny. Easy Grader - 1 mid term, 1 final, random quizzes based on vocabulary (which he gives a study sheet) 2 short essays (3-4 pages). Tries hard to "help" students pass.
he's a great teacher. Theres a lot of joking around in the class. Attendance is MANDATORY! You'll have to read a lot but he gives you a whole week to finish. Test are easy. Grades are based on Art journals, General Education papers, essays, reading quizzes, midterm, final exam and attendance/classroom participation. Over all hes a really great prof.
Prof Liss is a cool and funny guy. Can "accidentally" let out a few curse words and it can be funny. Usually has a few jokes to tell. Very little reading; ~100 pages from 1 book. 6 essays, 2 in-class. Liss is helpful but doesn't really teach anything. He will only give good tips/advice. Dont take if not a decent writer or you'll have a hard time
Professor Liss is great, for such an early hour he kept everyone awake and entertained. Comparative Religion is an awesome class with him, quizzes are easy, as well as exams as long as you do your part. Funny guy, great class, easy A.
He's a laid back teacher but gives really good lectures. He gives good study guides & easy homework (if any at all), plus hes not a harsh grader for the term paper. He'll occasionally push the envelope when it comes to his discussions, sometimes offending ppl or sayin something innapropriate, but thats nothing. This class was an EASY A. =]
Liss was one of my fav profs so far at ccsf. He has a great sense of humor. I almost got an A in the class even though I used to hate writing essays. Your grade is mostly 5 essays (2 are in class for midterm and final). Just make sure to follow his instructions for writing and put in effort. There isn't too much reading. He makes class entertaini
Prof. Liss is a great teacher and his course was easily my favorite English course thus far. His teaching style is entertaining and interesting which is helpful in keeping students awake and motivated. The essays required get lengthier as the semester goes on, but as long as you attend class and follow his instructions you will be fine.
The book used for the class is interesting and I learned some useful facts, I will say that. Liss has a poor attitude about teaching and often makes rude, snipe comments to some of the students. Some of the essays he assigned were unclear. Good class, bad professor.
Professor Liss is a great teacher; he made a boring subject into something that interests me to learn more about different religions and cultures. Listen in class, take notes & read the textbook; this should be a piece of cake. Good luck!
Jeff Liss is great! He's got a geeky/stupid/funny sense of humor that that make the class enjoyable and makes him approachable. But he will make you work for your grade. Not an "easy A", but if you actually want to learn something, he's awesome!
Jeff is one of the best teachers I've ever had! He is really funny and super laid back. He doesn't really teach much though so if English is a weakness for you, you might not want to take him.
Every class is like being at a comedy club.
He is very cool and funny. He makes lectures interesting. Occasional pop quizzes on basic facts from the assigned reading. His final and midterm are really easy because he hands out the review sheet, and everything on the test is in the review sheet.
One of the best professors at CCSF. His passion for teaching and religion is present every class lecture and office hours. The subjects are very fun and interesting. He also teaches English, so the essays you will write for his class will also be graded based on grammar and MLA format. After all, it is a college level course. I recommend him!
He is a cool professor. He tells fun stories that are related to the class. However, his first few assignments were a little boring. Toward the end of the semester we had research projects, which were a lot more fun to do since we got to explore the areas we were interested in.
If you have an interest in learning about the major religions in this world for a decent amount and get an easy A as well, then take Hum7 with Prof. Liss. Although he could be a little biased from a Liberal point of view it's ok. Try not to be offended by the negative remarks that some students have about other religions however. IT'S AN EASY A!
Jeff is a sweetheart!!! He deeply cares about his students and still talk to me when he sees me on campus even though I was in his class three semesters ago. He's hilarious. TAKE HIM !
He is a really good teacher. His personality is what makes the class interesting. He jokes about the topic that make it more understandable. His teaching style is really good. Although it was an online class, there is a lot of memorizing, but just vocabs and he gives out review sheets for midterm and final. Just study it and you will be good. Easy.
Mr. Liss is a fabulous teacher. He is hilarious so that makes the class entertaining. He will prepare you for quizzes and exams. Attendance is a must.
Professor Liss is an awesome teacher. He is very passionate about what he is teaching, and interested in the thoughts of his students. He is also available to help if you need it.
professor liss is an amazing teacher! i took him for hum7 and ended up loving the class! hes pretty nice and really funny (can get vulgar at times). We had quizzes for every chapter but if you read the book, then you'll be fine. Definitely recommend taking him! 2 research papers, a midterm and final. I got an A in the class
Jeff Liss is an amazing teacher! I had zero interested in the class and was dreading taking it but it ended up being my favorite class! He's super passionate about what he teaches, is super nice and very helpful. He's funny too, which helps a lot!
Professor Liss is a gem. His style of instruction is a laid back but remains educational, engaging, and genuine. His passion for the subjects discussed in class is always present and even a bit infectious at times. Hum 8 with Professor Liss has definitely been one of the most enjoyable classes I've taken so far at CCSF. Highly recommended!
Professor Liss has been my favorite teacher thus far in my entire educational career. He's got a great sense of humor and is the only teacher I've had that's been able to lecture his class with such a comfortable disposition, as if he were simply telling you stories from his own life. Knows his stuff. I wish he was teaching english next semester!
Great lectures, very humorous, and always welcomes questions during his lecture. He is very intelligent and knowledgeable of the subject (Comparative Religions) and uses the blackboard to further illustrate and highlight important topics. I enjoyed attending his class and look forward to taking his English course.
*This review is for the mostly online class* He's one of the best teachers I've had. The lectures are fun, he knows a lot about the subjects, and the course work is the perfect balance to actually learn the subject. His knowledge of Buddhism has led me down a path of learning more about it on my own. He's fair, funny, and I learned a lot.
Fun class. Professor Liss has a great sense of humor! Be prepared to read and for pop quizzes. We were assigned two major papers to write, fun topics, and is a fair grader.
He is one of the best professors I've ever had . Very passionate and will make you laugh everyday for sure . He's a great guy with a positive and passionate personality . I suggest to take his class even if it's not your major . I believe that he'll change your perspective in life and religions !
He's really passionate about the subject and the lectures make sense because he explains things in a way that relates to actual life. Sometimes a little snarky to students eating or on their phone, but ultimately cares that everyone understands and does well. Definitely keep up on the reading because quizzes!
Awesome professor. Easy and interesting class. Two papers, midterm and final and pop quizzes. He is hilarious is very willing to take work late as long as you turn it in.
Take his class! He is the best. He is hilarious and personable. Lectures are very interesting. There is reading every night, don't slack on it. Gonna try to take him for my next humanities class! 2 Essays, 1 Field Trip, Midterm & Final.
Wow - Jeff Liss - Total Gem. This guy gives the best dose of tough love. Small class size, intimate, and a great experience. Really loves his job and loves what he teaches. Great sense of humor. Would love to take him again for English 1B. You definitely have to EARN your grade. Show up to class, listen, give your best effort. Thanks Jeff!
I don't know how he has such a high rating. He says "uh" or "um" 100 times during a lecture and it's so distracting and makes the lecture ineffective. He has weird OCD about stapling too. And loves calling his students out in front of the whole class.
1) He thinks he's funnier than he is 2) Be careful on tests, he will occasionally make all the multiple choice answers the same 3) Very fair, respectful, and unbiased treatment of all religions covered
Took his online class so can't say much. He is hilarious but lectures can be boring. Easy quizzes/exams if you studied your vocabulary.
1B,HUM7 and HUM8. Very fair. Everything on quizzes/tests have been thoroughly discussed. no tricks. Intense/enjoyable lecturer. Sometimes sidetracked. He does say umm/uh a lot but due to so much info. Essays are graded fairly. Awesome guy! Makes you laugh. Does great job helping you understand material. both online and in class great experience.
Decently interesting lectures. Easy A if you do the work. Exams and quizzes are based completely on his lectures, I did not even open the book once but attended all lectures and was taking lots of notes - got an A. A couple of research essays, just make sure you submit them on time because he will subtract points for late submission.
Be aware he does say, Uh and Um a lot. But, hes grading criteria isnt that clear in writing essays. Method of grading essay is given in a separate sheet of paper. Short stories & syllables had to be printed by student and worse part there is no assignment due dates sheet. Puts people on spot of errors one has made, but doesnt say who.
Most of the material on quizzes and exams are gone over in his lectures. Very funny and has a lot of stories. Grades pretty fairly but if you do not show up to lectures then you may not know when things are due. Class is fairly easy as long as you read.
I took a hybrid online class with 6 in-person classes for lectures, midterm, final & a visit to the Asian Art Museum. Amazing lectures. Great feedback for online homework. A lot of extra credit opportunities. 2 essays and a field trip write-up. He opened my eyes to religions. I became more understanding, tolerant, knowledgeable, & spiritual.
Hands down the BEST Professor I have EVER had at CCSF. He makes the class fun and interesting, and chooses books that are interesting to read. Homework assignments are very straight forward and simple. While essay don't take long to write. Even his midterm and final is pretty straight forward. Very funny person and keeps the class entertained.
Jeff clearly has a passion for literature, and was even eager to pass this on to students who came into class with little to no interest in the subject. (I seriously effing hate Shakespeare, but me made me hate him a little less). He's funny, engaging, and down-to-earth. The amount of homework/reading was always reasonable.
Kinda dark sense of humor but he keeps the class going. Although lectures were lengthy I learned a lot about Bay Area history. Rubbed the wrong way a few times but take this class if you like a slight challenge. And enjoy writing papers.
Great teacher. Really enjoyed this class.
He does go off on tangents, but the fact is that this class is an easy A. The number one thing you MUST do is study vocab. If you need help or clarification, ask him.
Great class. I really enjoyed the lectures. Jeff is very funny and seems to really care about his students success. I have to admit that English classes are not my favorite but Jeff made is fun and engaging. I highly reccomend him!
I took the hybrid comparative religions class. It was fun and not too challenging. The lectures were great with Jeff's funny and quirky teaching style. He cracks a lot of jokes in class that keep students engaged and he did a good job moderating the online discussion boards to keep students on track debating interesting questions from the readings.
He wants you to know and understand the material covered in class and REALLY WANTS YOU TO COME TO CLASS. His lectures are fun and irreverent and he tells you exactly what will be on the tests. Show up to class and turn in the papers and you'll get an A. He always accepts late work. He's really a stickler for staples, tho.
Professor Liss is great! The amount of reading is reasonable. There will be homework questions about the the reading, a midterm in-class essay, and 3 reasonably-sized at home essays. Fair grading. Jeff really wants his students to succeed and allows time for individual feedback. Don't wait to register for Fall, his classes fill up fast!
Professor Liss is probably my favorite teacher at CCSF! He is hilarious and super chill, but his lectures are also very interesting and engaging and you learn a lot. He is very open-minded and passionate about what he does. He really wants you to succeed and is willing to help you. His class is easy as long as you do the work and engage
He's great! My favorite teacher ever, he's easy-going, has a passion for teaching, and is very interesting to listen to.
Very standard format for an online class. Very easy to follow. He's passionate about religions, knows his stuff, and always willing to help people out. He is a fair grader, as he says since the beginning, just don't procrastinate and fall behind.
prof liss is pretty serious when it comes to grammar, structure, topic sentences, and stuff like that when grading. reading question assignment hw every week and a couple essays along with in class midterm essay. do all ur work and put in the effort and youll likely get an A or high B
Professor Liss is one of my awesome professor in this Fall 2020. He is hilarious while doing the lecture. I love the way he inspires students to keep moving forward. Thus, he is open-minded so that every student may feel welcome under his course.
2 books and 2 reading papers. Weekly discussions. 1 Midterm +1 Final in-class essay. 2-3 "take home" essays. Not a hard class, but he definitely expects you to not make silly mistakes. He tends to put people on the spot . His dry jokes are unintentionally/lowkey offensive. Other than that, he is helpful & knowledgeable. Attend classes help.
The course was half-term so everything was accelerated. The textbook is the cornerstone of this class, if you don't read, you are already at a C at best. Lectures are mandatory but you can get by without them as long as you read the textbook and take notes. Filling out the vocabulary lists are a must.
Jeff was one of my favorite professors at CCSF. He's really funny and entertaining and made the lectures very interesting and fun to attend. You can tell that he's passionate about his subjects and teaching, and he cares about his students. He's also very open-minded (not "woke") and you can have very interesting conversations with him.
Professor Liss made Comp. Religions really interesting, and I liked use of modern examples/analogies to keep things relevant. He's a very talented lecturer, and the lectures aren't mandatory but I'd highly recommend attending. Expect to read about 50 textbook pages per week (in our condensed 8 week course). Very clear grader. Highly recommend!
if you wanna get your grade screwed take this class hardest English class
VERY passionate about content and it shows. Knows a lot so make sure to ask questions. Hybrid class, so there were Zooms but everything was on Canvas. The textbook is really interesting and you have to read it to do well on the exams. If you read the book, Zooms can be ignored. Exams had MC/essay sections. Very manageable even for 1/2 term class.
A tough college-level writing class for sure, definitely not an easy A!! Gives amazing feedback on every writing assignment you do so you can improve :) He's really considerate with late work and willing to reopen past assignments. Beware: LOTS of weekly assignments (a lot to handle for a part-time worker and student) MUST-READ, READ, AND REREAD
This comparative religions class was great because Jeff was passionate and excited to teach his students. His funny and aware commentary made learning about various religions engaging. There are weekly discussions and short quizzes, 2 3-page essays, and 2 exams. Be sure to read the textbook also because part of this class is memorization.
Professor Jeff Liss is charismatic, open-minded, and determined to teach you to critically think while learning at the level that you are currently in. In example; interpretations are wide but for the sake of understanding the fundamentals you must narrow your ego at times. Dropping this line of positive feedback because educators are instrumental
Prof. Liss is pretty great, he tends to ramble some during lec
Professor Liss is generous with his time and feedback. My essay writing skills improved A LOT over the course of the semester for this reason. Office hours are great for generating essay ideas and insight into the reading material. Lectures are funny and informative. The class requires time and dedication but you'll learn a lot. Fair grader.
Took over the summer, so it's very fast and short. Truly cares about his students. Amazing. Hilarious. There is a lot of reading and quizzes, so you will have to put in work, but it's easy. Offers extra credit. Curses a lot, but that's what makes the class fun. Shares interesting stories. There is an essay, midterm, and final. They're not too bad.
Professor Liss is a passionate, engaging, and hilarious lecturer. If you're extremely sensitive to mild cursing, slightly dark or irreverent humor, don't take this class. If you like that kind of thing, he will keep you engaged and entertained the whole way. Lectures and studying are necessary for an A, but this is college after all.
This class has a heavy workload, especially since it's an 8-week class. It also has A LOT of reading, and if you don't do the reading, you will suffer in this class. Also, he has a particular way of writing essays, but he does give good feedback. But It could sound not very pleasant sometimes.
He's nice, and entertaining enough, to stay awake in class. But he gives more work than I ever imagined. 5-7 full assignments a week plus reading and major essays. It's stressful to move so fast through the works even though it's a full semester class. I feel like I haven't learned a single thing because I'm focused on just getting through it.
Amazing professor! You can tell he loves his class! He gives extra credit at the end of the semester and also gives an extension in EACH assignment built in, so you don't really got to ask for one. Although he does remove points if you turn it late (within the extension), because its fair since you turned it in late. Easy class overall! Recommend.
Overall, a fine class. He can be funny and generally has a lot of interesting info. Judaism was treated horribly. Maybe a total of 1 hour in lecture time and we weren't able to address all content that we were tested on. Lots of antisemitic comments from students were engaged with, rather than quashed. This class should not be a hybrid format.
Very fun and caring man. Deeply humbled and knowledgeable individual and he is one of a kind. Taking him if you want a journey full of fun and excitement.
Professor Liss is one of the best instructors I ever had. He truly cares about what he teaches, explains religions and culture very courteously. He is very respectful to all the students regardless of the multitude of personalities we had in my class. The homework can be relatively difficult. Just study, attend lectures, and you'll do great!
