The class is not easy overall, but compared to other chem professors i've heard about, he's pretty good. he's funny sometimes and its possible to get an A if you just study. Tests are mostly multiple choice.
he seems to get upset when students are confused. lectures are clear. Exams are fair however not enough time to complete sometimes.
I didn't have enough time to finish any of the tests! They were too hard and too long.
he is funny, and the lectures move fast in the tue/thurs section. the tests are hard, but fair. i think im going to get a bad grade, and im tryin hard, but i also had no background in chem. its not impossible, just takes A LOT A LOT A LOT of work.
He is really funny so it keeps the class somewhat awake, let's you know what's going to be on the tests. Good lecture teacher, but hard, need to keep on top of the work and LEARN YOUR NOMENCLATURE!
Dr. Mack is a great instructor. Who knew chemistry could be so much fun? HE IS HALARIOUS!! If you hate chem.. u will show up to his lectures just to see the entertainment. Because he is so funny... you are able to remember the jokes... therefore remember the material that they are based on. If anything... you will always tell your offspring about t
His lecture was very organized but he didn't seem to care if anyone understood what he was talking about. Exams are very hard so studying is a must. His random noises are so weird but entertaining.
teachers well enough to grab your attention but coming to class would only help if you read the book or are an audio visual learner. otherwise read the book yourself and get notes online and COME TO LAB! And PRACTICE HW problems!
he is very funny but why go to the lecture when they are just what the book says. the class was very advanced and i thought he expected to much for a General chem. i did not finish the class but i would not take him again. it seemed like he was trying to weed out the weak ones.
Chem 1A is not an easy class to start with, but Mack made it bearable. If he teaches a lab take it, he explains a lot of stuff in lab that is confusing in lecture. I would definately take a class of his again.
Chem 1A is no joke. You need to be serious when you take this course, if not then your grade will suffer. Once you've fallen behind in the course, it's nearly impossible to catch back up. The amount of material covered is intense. Do the readings before lecture. Go to all the lectures. Get a good study group! This is what i did, i recieved an A-.
I did not have Dr Mack, but my class for Chem1A used all his lecture and tests...and believe me they are not easy. It's very possible to get an A if you put time into reading the book yourself and studying. Go to the Chem help office for help with the labs as they are a big part of your grade. Go to lecture and take notes.
Funny guy and a great teacher!
Do not expect to come out of this class with anything better than a high D/low C, unless you already have a strong background in Chem and no other classes. The class average was 64.2% He does not curve and thinks most of his class gets D's because they are D students.Take this course where the professor isn't going out of his way to give low grades
He has very dry jokes that do not make me laugh. His lectures are ok because he tries to make them interesting. The biggest problem about Mack is that he expects way to much from his students. He wants chemistry to be your "job" when you are taking chem 1a.
I didn't think this class was that hard. As long as you take the time to study, (which is a lot of time) then you will do fine in this class. Mack has the same jokes every semester so try to pass it the first time or you will hear it all over again. The trick is to get a good lab instructor. And STUDYYYYY!!
This is not for the faint of heart, it is very possible to pass this class however, if you do not put the time in then forget it. Labs are mandatory; you will not pass if you miss a single lab. The first test for me was a wake up, I got a 54, I passed the class with a B- regardless. DO NOT EXPECT TO SCATE THROUGH THIS ONE!!!!
As long as you study, you will pass. If you don't study, you will fail. Simple as that. Every semester he comes up with different ways to teach students about chemistry because this is what he is researching on right now. Same procedure but different ways. Very easy if you study!!! I would take this professor again.
wow again that is a hard class i passed first time around, and all i have to say is dear god i was going really kill my self if i did not pass. lot of stress in this class.
This class takes a lot of dedication, after all, it's a 5-unit class. He tries his best to entertain the class with his stories. Although there isn't a curve in the class, he's pretty fair in his grading. If you need help, ask for some right away, because the material will build upon itself.
this class is HARD. you have to seriously spend the time and buckle down and study. his lectures are powerpoint but he gets you to listen. he's pretty funny though he tends to recycle his jokes. but if you need help he's there for you. if you want to pass this class...STUDY STUDY STUDY
This is the hardest Chem 1a class ever... i would recomend taking this class with anyone but mack... Basically all the notes are on powerpoint... and you have to read chapters like crazy and study notes at the same time, then when u take the exam you end up feeling like you didnt study at all! If it werent for the old exams & studying 24/7 id fail!
HARD!!! Remember Chem Is TRY! Dr. Mack is hilarious in a cheesy way, he tries to make chem fun. You have to study NON-STOP. DO NOT FALL BEHIND! Read the chapter before he discusses it in class. Go to office hours, he is there to help. Talks really fast, so I recommend listening during lecture and printing off powerpoints after
Got through it by the skin of my teeth. Don't let get cocky with the labs. MC tests but tricky as hell sometimes. Read the book and go to office hrs is best advice. Part of it comes down to your lab instructor. Luck of the draw.
Crazy funny lectures. Very concise and clear.
His tests were hard... but I think this is just that kind of class. His lectures are super funny and he is a very likeable person. I used the book - A LOT. I learn by taking notes in class, and this is impossible to do with his lectures - which go super fast. I learned a lot.
Mack is very entertaining. He is hard depending on the prior knowledge you have in the subject. For me, almost half of the class was a review from basic High School Chemistry. If you are bad at this subject, I recommend taking Chem 4 first.
he had interesting power points that about it
He's a good teacher and he makes chemistry as entertaining as possible. Besides chemistry isn't that hard anyways. In a nutshell it's just counting. Besides the study guides he gives out before the exams have some of the same questions as the exam. There's no reason you should pass this class. If you're struggling it's because you're a "slacker" .
Obnoxious powerpoints, dry humor, makes fun of students, sometimes could barely hear him. You learn a lot more from your discussion/lab professors than you do him. I'd reccommend someone else, but he's the ONLY teacher teaching this subject :(
Dr Mack is one of the best CSUS teachers Ive had who teaches the hardest subject. When you take his class you get music, entertaining power point presentations, well practiced comical lecturs, weekly online homework, weekly prelab and lab assignments, weekly quizes, 3 multiple choice exams, a written lab final and a cumulative multiple choice final
At first I was impressed by his humor and his stimulating pwrpts. Then over time I realized all his flashiness does is hide the fact that he doesn't really actively teach. Never writes problems out, relies 100% on pwrpt, speaks way too fast. Uses the same test questions from semester to semester. OL HW/Quizzes are difficult. Too much work per week
Dr. Mack is an okay Prof. I only had him for lecture. Not really helpgul outside of class. Rely mostly on power points for everything. Lots of work every week. Do the extra credit and optional assignments, will help you on discussion. Do reviews, will help during tests. Keep up with the reading or else you will miss things that he will not teach.
great semester
Excellent professor. Engaging power point presentation. Large lectures are usually horribly boring. No busy work assigned--if you do OWL homework you WILL receive an A on all exams and in class. If you're not prepared to actually do work outside of class, show up to class and read the textbook, you shouldn't take this class.
Lectures move FAST but he makes the presentations engaging and interesting. Class requires lots of time and work, but if you read, do homework and study, you'll be fine. I love his science/ geek jokes.
Before starting this class, I was worried about passing. I did not have a chem background at all! If u want to pass, its all about putting in time. I got an A in this class by doing what was assigned and listening to Mack when he tells u what u need to do to pass. He knows what hes talking about! Hes a good teacher and he recognizes if u try hard
WATCH OUT FOR THE MACK ATTACK! Seriously though, his awesomeness and hilariousness will melt your brains! His sense of humor is delightful and will definitely keep you engaged in his lectures. I enjoyed coming to class, as I knew I was guaranteed to laugh out loud in every lecture! I HIGHLY recommend this professor. You won't regret having him.
Super funny instructor, keeps your interest even though it's difficult topic. This class requires lots of work and discipline, and the tests are challenging, but that's not Mack's fault. Read the book before class and do all the work and you'll pass.
The users below who gave the "mack attack" such high ratings must be a little odd. He is not helpful, he will make you feel stupid for asking a question. He will not teach you anything, your better off reading the text and attempting to decipher his idiotic slides.I didnt come for your terrible sense of humor, so save it and actually teach. AVOID
Mack is a very good professor. He is helpful when you come to him with a legit question. He's not going to just give you the answer to your question, you have to work for it and he will help you get to the correct answer. Absolutely loved his class. Lectures seem long b/c we have to fly through the info. Def recommend
This guy is amazing! nuff said!
great professor, really helpful. Content is hard but he tries to make it simpler and easier to follow. One of the best lecturers ever. Gives bonus points on quizes and tests. Your brain might explode, but its because of the class not the professor. Very helpful and approachable. Funny. Would be awsome if i could get him for Chem 1b.
Great teacher! He also throws in jokes to keep you awake. He does refrence to the book and you should skim over it but if you show up to class and do the homework you have a easy B but if you want an A you should read the book and study.
Chem 1A and 1B span a huge amount of general chemistry...not only is not easy to cover everything, but it's not easy to make it interesting/engaging. Mack does an awesome job of both and I will be taking every class I can from him. If you *do* the homework, and at least skim the book, you'll get an A...if you don't, drop the class.
I came into this class thinking it would be extremely difficult because of the 50% pass/fail rate. I got an A! But that resulted from doing hw on mastering chemistry, passing quizzes, & doing well on postlabs. Dr. Mack also kept lecture interesting, but u must read to get it. The stressful part of this class is that there's always something to do.
Dr. Mack is a great professor, you have to put in a lot of effort in this course in order to succeed with a high grade. Spend lots of time on homework and tutorials on masteringchemistry. Read the book often before coming into lecture. You will understand everything a lot better. Got an A. Work hard!
Hardest class I have yet taken. Constant flow of prelabs, postlabs, and online homework needing to be done. The chemistry help lab really helped me pass. Quizzes are difficult and often, tests are hard. Dr. Mack is pretty entertaining, although I did need some help staying awake an hour into lecture. First class I ever voluntarily made notecards.
HARD CLASS, but cannot blame Dr. Mack. He is a great teacher, super helpful and really entertaining. The only complain I had with him was that he spoke extremely fast, I was never able to keep up. But, again, I cannot blame Dr. Mack because he has alot of material to cover. Get to know Dr. Mack, he has alot to offer. He is genuinely nice
I got an A. Best professor ever. He's super helpful, nice, & FUNNY. He has MUSIC & SOUND EFFECTS in his PowerPoints!!! BUT it's a challenging class. READ. Ask Questions. TONS of weekly online HW. Weekly quizzes (EASY), and weekly pre-labs + labs. 3 exams + lab final + final. 3 exams + lab final have extra credit opportunity. Wish he taught CHEM 1B.
This class was challenging for the fact that I never took chem but I somehow managed to pass. This course is a remedial class for Chem1A so work hard. He does his lectures through a power point and he posts them up on his website but literally read the chapter before going to class or else you won't understand anything. Ask questions!!
GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS HE IS AWSOME, ONCE YOU GET TO KNOW HIM
This is a hard class but he is an awesome teacher. You have to put in the work to do well.
Literally the worst class I've ever taken. He does not handle grades, his tests are ridiculous and meant to trick you, he has a zero tolerance policy (a very sucks to suck mentality), his lectures are a full TWO WEEKS ahead of any tests or discussions which means you literally learn the material you need to know from the TA the day before the quiz
Great professor. Need to study and really understand class to do well. Attendance isn't mandatory but pop quizzes are given in lecture. Lab is easy enough and discussion is helpful.
Dr. Mack is one of the best professor ever! He's funny and he's truly interested in chemistry along with helping the students pass. If you're a student who does the right thing this class will be easy! You have to really keep up the work, attend the classes, and you will pass this course. Chemistry is not supposed to be easy (:
Ugh, I have to retake this class next semester. I loveD chem, got a B+ in Chem 4..then I took this class. I took it at the same time as bio 22 and completely regret it. It is an overwhelming amount of work if paired with an equally difficult class. Mack is helpful if you are confused, but it was difficult to learn anything since we move SO quickly.
I hated this class. I honestly couldn't wait until it was over..I love Chemistry but Mack wasn't the right guy. Exams are meant to trick you. You have a better chance of studying in a group than going to class - but he does give out pop quizzes..Also doesn't care if you fail and encourages you to drop. Wish someone else taught CHEM1A. Sigh.
Awesome and funny guy. He keeps lectures interesting but it goes by kinda fast and there's no time for questions most of the time. But he's very approachable and I recommend going to his office hours for help. Overall a doable class if you try! Good luck!
I thought Mack was a really nice/ helpful. He told us all the topics that are gonna be on the exam/quizzes. Very straightforward. I recommend doing all the homework online and all the extra credit. Also, STUDY the discussion notes and quizzes. He loves to recycle questions! Seriously, those who didn't pass probably didn't do hw & study enough.
ALOT of work. Weekly quizzes, online HW, prelabs, labs, and pop quizzes in lecture. 3 exams, lab final and cumm. final. Moves very fast. offers 60 pts of extra credit in class. This class is like a part time job, be prepared to spend a lot of time studying if you want to do well. He is pretty helpful and entertaining.
I hate this class
I would recommend him. Lecture goes by pretty past so u have 2 keep up w/ the reading. Its a difficult class so it can't get any easier. Bt he tries his best to make it possible that everyone passes the class. Lots of extra credit. 7 pop quizzes, drops 2. 12 discussion/lab quizzes, drops 2.Know ur net ionic equation (those r extra credit questions)
Best Professor always keeps class interesting and is always open to helping you and tests are very easy if you go to lecture
Either you want to take him or not, Dr. Mack is the only choice for CHEM 1A prof. Those who didn't pass the class as I've seen was really lazy. You should treat this class as a part-time job and you will do well. Plus, I don't like Dr. Mack's lecture that much, try to take it with Dr. Gherman if it's possible as a lab/dis prof, you'll do well
I loved this teacher. The subject was a lot of fun too. Take this course with some simple GE courses and you will do fine (I took it with PHYS 11A unfortunately). The individual topics where all pretty easy to me, the difficulty is the huge quantity of topics covered in the class. Like he says, "We are shoving 10 lbs of information in a 5 lb bag."
Great teacher, helpful office hours, and comprehensive feedback to questions in lecture. Probably the toughest class you will take in college. Homework, labs, and quizzes galore! Utilize the PALS (Peer Assisted Learning) program at Sac State and attend as many teacher and PALS office hours as you can.
One of my favorite teachers. I loved coming to class. Make sure to attend lectures he usually posts the powerpoints unless attendance is low. ask questions during lecture and activity. make sure to study for exams that is where most of the grade comes from. he used mastering chemistry when I took this class
Dr. Mack is a hilarious lecturer and makes chemistry lectures funny and somewhat interesting. He knows his fail rate is over 50% and doesn't really care. He views his class as a "college course" which in his mind means if you need help, get it. He is not going to baby sit you or come to you. This is an extremely difficult class with a lot of work.
Dr. Mack is a really cool instructor and really laid back. He's straightforward in regards to what you need to know to pass the class. Do keep in mind that Chem 1A is going to pretty hard, and you gotta work for it. It's just a bunch of information to cover, but it's doable. Go to his office hours and ask him for help, and he'll help you out.
This is the class where you'd have to put your all in and study for every aspect of it. He is a funny and great professor. He gives a lot of homework and it helps for the weekly quizzes and exams. His lectures are very fast so make sure to read.
I don't see why people are whining, it'll probably be the easiest or second easiest science course any science major will take. Lectures straightforward, just read ahead. and he explained things well if you needed clarification.
Mack is excellent. His exams are probably the hardest ones you will ever take, so pay attention and READ THE BOOK. Exams are based on conceptual mainly, so readdo SOME work problems because there's only a few on exams. End of the semester lots of extra credit online, DO IT. LabDisc is easy don't worry, find a good partner for lab. Also have fun!
Dr. Mack's class is straightforward and knows his stuff. Each exam has extra credit opportunities which is a grade saver. You gotta study up and know your stuff for this class. Yo chem gotta be on fleek. Weekly quizzes in Lab are pretty easy and he tells you what's on it. Remember to study mucho and ask questions because Mack explains things well
Okay so before taking this class, I thought it was impossible to get a good grade... IT'S NOT! Majority of people I knew didn't always attend lectures, didn't study for the quizzes, and didn't actually do the online hw. Then they got a bad grade. If you truly put in the effort, you'll get a good grade. Also, people are always willing to help you:)
Mack is a showman and his lectures are well prepared in a meant-to-entertain fashion. However, he has no time for your questions, and is unhappy when anyone interrupts the show. Most of the actual learning is outsourced to the online homework and the readings. I don't think this set up is his fault, but don't expect any help from him.
Great teacher! Straight to the point and tells you exactly what you need to know. He is always ready to help students. Exams are really tough but he reuses some questions from lab quizzes and discussions.
Have to understand material is hard. That being said class was straight forward. Quiz ever week. Lab every week with pre-lab and post lab calculations. 3 test plus a final in both lecture and lab. Mack makes lectures as clear as possible. Puts effort to make as entertaining as possible. Tests are off the material in book. Need to read.
Mack is a good professor. Most of the time he explains things clearly. There are 3 exams and a cumulative exam. The exams of based off of homework and quizzes. He gives quizzes in lecture every week or every other week, 2 questions. There is a quiz in lab every week and a prelab and postlab to follow. Attendance in lab and discussion is mandatory.
I was hesitant taking Dr. Mack's class due to the reviews on here, but Dr. Mack turned out to be one of my greatest professors. He made lectures fun and entertaining. He was very helpful when sought out. There's no room for slacking in Chem1A. READ! READ! READ! PRACTICE! Get some help from the help office, PAL, and Dr. Mack. Not impossible to pass.
Don't be fooled by all the negative reviews. People just give bad reviews if they get a bad grade and blame it on the professor. If you are planning to be a Chemistry or Biology major then this class should be a cakewalk for you. If it isn't then you will seriously need to fix your study habits because the classes only get harder after Chem 1A.
I took Chemistry 1A with Dr. Mack and got a C-. He is like a sour patch kid in reverse. He is very funny in lectures, maybe a bit cranky at times, and then hell purposely remove all his slides and study material from blackboard the night before the final exam when you're trying to cram. Thanks a lot Dr. Mack! Very funny. :(
Dr. Mack is the funniest professor I've ever taken. I would read the chapter before each lecture and it made the world of a difference because he doesn't lecture on every topic, just the more complicated stuff. He does put textbook material on the exams that he doesn't cover in lecture. Best of luck to everyone in Chem 1A!
Taking Chemistry as a freshman was something I thought I'd regret. Taking Dr. Mack's course, however, has prepared me for success in my future classes. You either work hard, or you don't. Most of the course can be understood through the lectures and discussion, but to really understand and pass with a high B, you have to put good effort into it.
Great professor, but you really have to understand the ins and outs of what he teaches. He grades fairly, but you have to work for your grade. You absolutely cannot miss lecture, and you cannot just simply attend lecture and discussion and lab and think you will pass. Read, make flash cards, and re read notes!! Understand what he is teaching.
This class is not difficult if you make sure you understand the material by reading the book before coming to lecture. Also, ask questions and attend his office hours. He is always willing to help if you show that you care about the class. Study the discussion and quiz questions before exams. Extra credit is given on exams and quizzes.
Dr. Mack is a great professor. He makes the lecture simple and easy to understand, and is willing to help students anytime. Anyone who cannot pass this class please blame yourself, for not doing enough homework and ask questions!
Teacher is cool but the class is just too hard. I took this class twice and got a C. Study, study, study. You really have to practice the problems at home and do all the homework if you want to do well. Exams are incredibly tricky. Either you study, or you fail. Your choice. Oh, and exams are a total 500/1000 class points. Good luck.
Best chemistry professor for 1A, definitely go to office hours when you don't understand. Very smart and knows what he's teaching. Do all homework, practice problems, it helps with exams because they're extremely hard. Course is hard itself, but Mack does his best to teach and pass everyone. Also does a lot of extra credit on quizzes or randomly.
I was always warned not to take Dr. Mack. (worst advice ever). He is so much easier to understand (attend lecture), he's funny, and helpful. Class itself is difficult but re-writing my notes helped a lot and studying a week or so before the exams are helpful. Along with doing the hw ahead of time because I learned from these too.
Very hard
Chem 1a is without a doubt the hardest class I've ever taken. You really really have to work to pass this class. Get ready to spend hours every week studying and doing homework and still not do as good as you expected to on the exams and quizzes.
Study, study, study. Mack gets a bad rap for being a "hard" prof, but if you put in your half of the effort, you should do just fine. Mack gives you a strong foundation during lecture, you build from that in your studies. Join a PAL! They're a great resource. Tests are tough, but not unmanageable. Mack is a great professor, and does his best.
He does know a lot but is hesitant to really explain certain things. I have asked questions during lecture and his response was " I just figured it out". This was after reading and doing homework before class so I was not unprepared going into lecture. The entire class is extremely rushed. In lab and lecture you are constantly rushed.
He's a very nice, well- informed professor. He makes lectures interesting and responds to emails/ meets after class if needed. Wish I could have stayed, but i had to drop it was just too hard. Read and stay ahead in the class, because there's a 60% fail rate. Good luck and may the force be with you.
As long as you go to all the classes and attempt to understand the material, you will be fine.
This was a difficult class, but Dr Mack's lectures, labs, and grading system were very organized, which helped me stay on top of things. Attend lectures, look through notes again after class, study for the quizzes which are in the beginning of every lab, and you'll do well. Also come to office hours; Dr Mack is very willing to help those who come.
Class is only hard if you don't put the effort into it. An A is achievable but you have to dedicate yourself to the material, which is a lot. Lots of self studying, and exams are hard so practice as much as you can. Read the book before class and as much as you can; final old exams to practice from. This class will be hard if you come unprepared
Great introduction to Chemistry
I love this Man! Greatest Chem Professor. His power points are very informative and he has great taste in music. He will help you understand the material if you ask him. Tests are hard but if you study and take the activity section seriously you should pass. Hi gives extra credit on every test and quiz. Homework is easy. Just put in the work.
Homework in this class is done at an unreasonable rate. The lecture does not go over what is on the homework or the test. Everything and I mean everything is graded in this class... BEWARE. This class goes by very fast with the professor trying to cram at least 14 chapters in 18 weeks. Help as this class is going to be self taught. AVOID
The man is smart, nice, and goofy. While he does give a lot of lectures, they are not mandatory to come, and he posts his lectures online. He gives everyone chances by giving extra credit on quizzes and exams. Homework is online, but if you complete them, you get 100%, no matter what. He's tough but gets you ready for chem 1B
Dr. Mack made lectures interesting and fun. He definitely made me work hard to get ready for chem 1b. I suggest reading the textbook, practicing problems, and coming to lecture because it helps A LOT. Practice problems from lecture & textbook because they are usually similar to quiz problems. Easier to keep up than to catch up :)
Professor Mack is a good guy, but not a great professor. He expects you to know everything on the first try. He doesnt answer your questions in a nice manner. He missed a few lectures and expected us to know the material when he came back. He does not give study guides or do review sessions. Save yourself from lots of stress and dont take him!!
Chem is very conceptual in nature in which you will need to READ THE BOOK and understand what you are reading. Mack is a cool guy, easy to talk to and has a passion for chemistry. This is a hard class so be prepared to work hard and ASK QUESTIONS and SEEK HELP AS NEEDED.
This is a class that will take a lot of effort. Make sure to sign up for PAL. If you do not stay on top of the work, you most likely wont pass. Also, study hard for the proficiency quizzes in the beginning of the semester. They can make or break your grade at the end.
I sat through some lectures with a friend & helped them study. His jokes are not funny, he skims through important info, does not explain anything, & not helpful in office hours. If I would've taken him, I would've failed, & I got As in both 1A & 1B. Do yourself a favor & go to a JC & transfer the classes over. Better for your future & GPA.
I wish I took Chem1A at ARC rather than have taken it with him. He tries to joke around in class & can't explain things well. The only thing that kept me from dropping the class half way through was a diff professor telling me to just get the class over with. Lots of hw and quizzes to keep up with. Honestly the worst. Good luck to those taking him.
I wish I had never taken this class. I work hard and usually get Bs and As but i got my first D with him. If you fail the proficency quiz don't expect any help from him, he wont take the time for you because "you should just quit". Activly belittles soft science and non-science majors. Makes the lab teachers do all the grading. TAKE ELSEWHERE!!!!!!
Fantastic professor! Its a difficult class but he gives you all the resources you need to succeed and definitely cares about his students. Grading is fair and hes always available for office hours. Prepare to work your butt off though.
Took this class last spring and found myself wanting to cry for failing to pass. I put so much effort in studying for this course that it took over my life. I transferred over to another school and found the eq. course to be miles better than Mack's class. Mack's teaching is sitting and walking in circles while speeding through his slides.
Took this class and failed. I retook this class at another CSU and passed with flying colors. He is knowledgable in chem but fails at explaining concepts to students. He teaches by skimming over his slides and somewhere in between, makes jokes to waste time. He expects you to memorize stuff for 1B, but the material isn't even needed at all for 1B.
Avoid this professor at all cost. Mack is a horrendous professor!! He assumes that you read everything beforehand and know what you read perfectly so he doesn't need to explain it in class. I also found out that he was fired from UCD for the same reason because more than 50 percent of the class failed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Dr. Mack is a fantastic educator.
Personally, this class took over my life. I was lucky enough to pass with an 85% but it was hard. I personally recommend taking a PAL and have a study group. Dr. Mack is entertaining during lecture, however, hes a pretty hard grader. Even if youre off by one number, he will mark it as a 0. Do the homework, ask for help, and do not procrastinate!
Dr. Mack is a good professor. He provides you the tools to succeed and gives plenty warnings/fear tactics to get it across. If you do not succeed, it's because you aren't putting the work in. It takes a lot of work to do well but it is possible. Take a PAL and put in work DAILY. He also complains about phones a lot and belittles our generation.
Lots of reviews say hes bad at teaching, but I had a different experience. If you go to lecture, office hours, do the reading before lecture, hw, and understand chemistry you will pass. People who didnt pass didnt use his resources. Were all adults, be responsible for the grade you earn. Time put in grade you get. He notices who works hard.
Why are you even looking B? He's your only option. He ain't that bad.
His exams are the hardest things that you will ever take. You literally teach the course to yourself because he lectures so quickly (you never have time to actually write anything down). Before the exams, the best thing to do is go over all of his lectures and memorize how to do the problems presented in the PowerPoint. The book doesnt really help
Had him during COVID. Class is very fast paced. Exams arent difficult. The only reason many students dont pass is because of the time limit. 50-60minutes for every exam containing 20-40 questions. PAL wasnt very useful unless you want to be the one to take charge and do all of the work. Tests/quizzes make up 70% of grade.
Chem 1A is a difficult class as it is and is definitely a lot of work. When you go into lecture he assumes you have read prior to that class meeting. His lectures move quite fast. He does care about his students, however, this is a class where you get what you put into it and your grade will definitely reflect this. He is a good professor!
The discussion questions are the best thing to study for the exams. There is a lab final. Use the resources he provides and watch his lecture. Sometimes he hints what will be on the exam during lecture. Keep practicing the material until you can teach it.
You're basically going to teach yourself everything. Quizzes/tests aren't really hard it's just the time limit that makes it difficult. There's no other option for this course, so be ahead in your readings and hw if you want to do well. good luck lmao
Honestly, chemistry is a hard subject. STUDY. Do optional textbook questions, go to office hours, and make study friends. Time was limited on exams and quizzes so you either know it or not. He was really funny, and at first he seemed intimidating but he's actually so approachable! Hate the subject, but not the professor.
If you can take Chem 1A else where or take it with one other class. The amount of work given is unhealthy. You have readings and quizzes weekly as well as about 50-70 homework problems a week with 2-5 parts a question. Sometimes you will have quizzes and exams the same day. If you want to save your mental health do not take this class with him.
You can spend a lot of time studying & not do well on his exams. Try to rack up as many points in the class to balance out your poor exam scores. The average is 60% for exams which he claims is normal. That doesn't mean you didn't work hard, it is just tricky on purpose. The exams do not follow directly with the textbook nor the homework. GOODLUCK!
Nice guy but did not acclimate well to remote learning. Quiz and test time too short and does not allow students to skip and come back to questions they dont understand. Doesnt grade on curve though average test scores are very low: around 60%. Doesnt take student feedback into consideration or record lectures. Too many homework problems.
Do not fall behind on the reading assignments! I took chem 4 prior to this class and it helped A LOT. He jumps right into teaching so it will be hard for anyone who has no idea about nomenclature. Quizzes and exams are timed. I always felt like I never had enough time. If you put in the effort, you will pass.
Although his lectures are interesting, the workload is very heavy and time demanding. If you want to pass, I highly recommend doing your work in a timely manner and reading the textbook before class. It is a class you definitely have to earn your grade in.
This is the hardest class I have taken in my college years. He assumes the worst out of students and believes students are lazy. There are prelabs, lab reports, HW, 14 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 lab final, & 1 cumm. final. READ EVERYTHING in your textbook! If you are normally an A student, you will be B student unless this is the ONLY class that you take.
This class might come off as intimidating, but it isn't impossible or difficult. However, I'll say that keeping up with homework while also studying for quizzes(once a week) and exams makes you feel overwhelmed. Study his discussion worksheets and lecture slides!! His test/quiz problems follow a VERY similar format. He also offers extra credit.
Chem 1A is a difficult class that covers some difficult concepts. Dr. Mack does a decent job making sense of it and his lectures are always fun. He doesn't give out a ton of extra credit, so you'll need to do well on the tests to succeed in the class. He gives you more than enough resources to help you if you need it, and chances are you will.
DONT take his class. He is rude when it comes to constantly making jokes that students wont pass. He expects students to dedicate their whole life to this class. I took this class as a refresher and I regretted it. And God forbid you ask him a question, go check the syllabus! Avoid taking his class at all costs. Idk how hes still teaching.
MUST READ! Please save yourself while you have the chance. This class set me up for failure. I am an A student and let's just say this class destroyed me. Your drowned in so much hw and reading. His class made me change my chem major. The exams are so difficult even with hours of studying. He also has a rude sense of humor with humiliating majors.
You probably have no other choice but to take him. Sorry. Not going to sugarcoat it, its hard. It's meant to separate the men from the boys. Most people, 66% have to retake it and the second time around is easier because you know what to expect. Your homework will also be easy to complete and you wont have to retake lab. So that's the bright side.
This class was rough. I had 2 years of chemistry experience and still found this class hard. DO NOT PROCASINATE! It will be extremely difficult to catch up, unless you're a chem prodigy. He is quirky and can be blunt about passing the class or not. 3 exams, weekly quizzes and lab, a cumulative lab final, LOTS of Hw and cumulative final. Good luck!
Dr. Macks chem 1A course is fairly difficult. I spent at least 5x more time on this chem class than any of my other courses this semester. He is often very passive aggressive through email and intimidating to ask questions because his bluntness makes you feel like a dummy for asking. STUDY STUDY STUDY is all I have to say!
I found the most difficult thing that his quizzes and tests are timed. I.E 10 minutes for a quiz with 12 questions, so you have to do each in less than a minute. He says that if you can't answer these questions in less than a minute, then you don't know it. That's fair, but some of us do just work slower even if we do get it correct. Irritating
This is a difficult course. You will need to put in the time to understand the concepts. Personally, I found the quizzes and tests to be alright. If you are stuck, go to his office hours! I found him to be very approachable! There are lots of opportunities for extra credit, so do use them. Read ahead, do your homework, and review plenty. Good luck!
The course itself is very hard but what can you expect from chemistry. Always read ahead he will not wait for you. Make sure to complete homework in segments you will take hours if you do it last minute. STUDY STUDY STUDY. He does tend to come off arrogant as he expects you to fully know each concept. Just be ready for lots of work.
AWFUL! Do not take him if you have the option. Either take it at your local community college or consider switching your major. This man caused me so much stress I feel as though I aged ten years in one semester. Save your mental health and don't take this man.
His slides are clear and follow the textbook. The lectures will absolutely not make sense unless you read the material before hand. If you don't read it, it's almost not worth going as you won't understand the material. His lectures move fast. Average on everything was ~40%. No curve, but there is extra credit on weekly quizzes that you need to get
You will need to spent at least 2-3 hours a day to fully understand the material and complete the homework. It's true, this class is one of the hardest classes, if not the hardest, at sac state. You get what you put in though. Can get a B or A if you put in the effort, go to office hours, and put the effort in to study
NO NO NO. Unless you are a chemistry god or have photographic memory do not take him. He is the definition of a terrible professor. Stressed me out enough for a lifetime in one semester. Save your GPA, mental health, and money and take it at a CC.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Racist professor, inappropriate slides and unfortunately on a tenure. Mocks President Nelson and disrespectful to his students. I had to withdrawal due to his lack of email responses plus his lack of kindness. Take gen chem somewhere else. Dr Mack is not worth it.
Reviews are a bit dramatic. You have to put the work in, he tells you that as well. Several opportunities for extra credit, ppl come into the class unaware of how difficult it will be. Fast pace, go to lecture and get help. Is he the best? No. But very do-able in his class. Do the hw, study, go to lab lecture and discussion. Its one semester w/ him
Dr. Mack is awesome. Really enjoyed his lectures. Reviews here had me expecting the worst, but I found it to be an extremely fair and well-structured course. There IS a lot of work, but it's a 5 unit class with a lab, so it's to be expected. Lots of quizzes and exams but he tells you exactly what will be on them. Overall, this was a great class.
Took it Spring 2022. Mack does assign tons of hw but the extra practice does help a lot with understanding. Bonus credits are provided on exams, all of which are NIEs. As tedious and repetitive as it is, grind through the work and you'll be rewarded with good grades. Get to know the man too, he really isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
I took this class Fall 2022. Expect to spend a lot of time studying and lots of homework. Professor was clear on what will be on exams/quizzes, questions are straight from the review materials and discussion worksheets.
The course was introductory chemistry. Any of the bad reviews for this intro course honestly couldn't handle the basic workload. Class was straightforward and the professor is an entertaining guy. A lot of work and dedication is needed for this class. Dont take the class if you are lazy. Get your work ethic straight before you take the course.
Dr. Mack makes chemistry fun. Beware though, its a hard class. You will need to spend the time and effort to get a grade you want. However, Dr. Mack makes lectures fun and some complex topics easy to understand. He is very down to earth and you can get help from him during office hours. He answers emails on a specific schedule though so careful.
Overall a good professor. His lectures are clear and he includes a lot of humor to spice things up. This is a weed out class, so make sure to become acquainted with the subject as there are a lot of people who drop out of the class. Just do your homework, come to lecture, and read out of the book, and you should be fine.
Assigns a lot of homework, and the workload for the class is a lot. If you do the work and all the extra credit you will easily pass. Exams were super hard but quizzes and homework were easy. A TON OF EXTRA CREDIT. the extra credit saved me on all my homework and quizzes. If you pay attention in lecture and do all the work you will pass.
Great Professor. Lots of Work.
The only way to be successful in this class is to attend every single lecture and discussion, read the material before lectures, keep up with homework and do all the extra credit. I also rewrote my notes and spent 2 hours every other day studying to try to understand the material. However, I still failed and was often intimidated by his attitude.
This professor was very difficult. The material isn't difficult, but his class structure is. The exams and quizzes are impossible to complete on time. You would be better off taking this course at a community college.
the course is hard, but Dr. Mack is hilarious and easy to talk to. He provides a lot of extra credit and his exams are very similar to the quizzes and hws. Its easier to keep up than catch up so try to do everything on time and ask for help if you need it.
You are going to have to work hard for your grade in here. About 2 homework per week, recommended studying time about 3-4 hours if you don't already know the material. The lab section is easy in "class" but then doing labflow is hard because there isn't much clear instruction one you get stuck.
Chem 1A with Professor Mack requires consistent effort, but the extra credit opportunities and approachable teaching style make it manageable. Utilizing resources like the textbook, study sessions, and tools like unstuck study helped me stay on top of the workload.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Do not let all the good reviews trick you (it tricked me). He has been teaching for centuries he was probably better years ago, but nowadays, he is awful. He does not care about students and has told me personally that he is just ready to retire and complains about still being here. If you want to pass Chem1A, take Rebecca Peebles
Dr. Mack is the greatest professor I've ever had, and he has a good sense of humor. He presents Chemistry in the way that makes it simple, and considering how difficult Chemistry is as a subject, that is an extraordinary feat that not many professors can replicate. Exams are hard, but the homework and quizzes are pretty easy, with extra credit.
Dr. Mack is nitoriously given a poor rating on here however, I think people just do not enjoy chemistry. Dr. Mack is a caring man who wants his students to succeed. His exams are fair. If you get a bad grade, you did not take advantage of the opportunites presented to you not only by Mack, but by Sac state. If you're struggling join a PAL.
Exams are scantron so there's no room for error. Gen Chem should be broken up into 3 semesters. The volume of information thrown at students turns Chem 1A into a weeder class. Dr Mack's one of the best teachers to take. You just have to put the time in. People that give him bad reviews just didn't study outside of class.
Dr. Mack is an amazing professor. Pay attention, attend lectures + discussion, and you will easily pass. If you are struggling, ASK FOR HELP. The people who wrote negative reviews likely did not study outside of class, nor did they attend some classes. Chemistry is not easy, so you need to put in a great amount of effort to get a high grade.
Dr. Mack is a good person. He genuinely wants everyone to pass the class. I somewhat agree that if you didn't pass the class, it's cause you didn't put in the effort. We had weekly quizzes & homework, 3 exams, a final, some lab reports which were difficult because the lab manual was confusing. The class structure is difficult, and he has his quirks.
Great professor! Lots of homework and quizzes but Dr. Mack was very straightforward with his quiz and exam outlines. Definitely attend office hours because he can explain topics for your understanding.
Had Dr Mack for both lec and lab. He's rad. Go to class, practice homework and ask questions outside of class if you are having trouble (in his office hour or the chem tutor center). Chemistry isn't a subject you can do without putting the time in. You just need to practice outside of class. It's that simple. Dr Mack is the best. Take his class.
Dr. Mack is a funny guy. Just know he hates phones, & he'll tell you to not be afraid to ask questions, but when you ask him he will joke about you in front of the whole class. He also is not good at re-explaining things so you might want to really read the book for this class. Other than that he gives a good amount of extra credit opportunities.
He's chill and will be there for you if you need help understanding something. He's teaching a Chem class with a TON of material to get through. He has a straightforward standard for his students: knowing how to do the chemistry. My only complaint is that exams are on Scantron; no partial credit. I'll never understand how that's okay for Chem.
His class is extremely tough and fast paced, if you do not have the time to go to office hours for extra help don't bother taking the class. He gives you weekly quiz's that you don't have enough time to finish. I put in the effort and time and did everything I could to pass the class and still felt like I was drowning.
He made me love chemistry! Though he looks tough, he's warm and truly cares. I failed his class once but took it again, don't give up, just push harder each time. He's passionate and always ready to help. Exams and quizzes are tough, but once you understand and ask questions, it gets easier. [Premeds, this is a weed-out class DON'T give up!]
Amazing professor. It is a lot of work, so definitely study and put in the work. He might seem like he's mean, but he's actually nice and helpful. He includes quiz questions and the answers in his lecture slides. I would recommend attending lectures even though it's not mandatory because he'll explain it more than just looking at the slides.
Dr Mack was an ok professor. He did try to make class fun/interesting. The 3 exams are worth 30%, quizzes 10, final 20, lab final 5, proficiency quizzes 7.5, HW 10, and labs 17.5. No curve but there's always EC if you can solve net ionic equations so I would really try to learn those because that will give you a huge grade boost. EC on HW too.
He did try to make class more fun, and he's a cool old guy. Just make sure that you prioritize chemistry above the rest of your classes. Reading the book was interesting because it was online and had videos. Make sure you study for quizzes that are held in discussion every other week.
