He was very easy to understand and gives most all views on history. You don't just learn one side like in most classes. He was really good. I wish he taught 1320
He was a good lecturer and tells you what he expects from students. If you study well for his tests and know the study guides well, you will do fine in the class. He was way better than Watson 1320.
This is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I was dreading history before I took his class because I have never liked it. This turned out to be my favorite class this semmester. I deff. recommend him~!
he gives very good lectures. they are easy to understand and interesting. he also will help you out if you don't get something. he is one of the best teachers i have ever had.
He's cool but he goes fast.
mauck is a great professor...he goes over the material thoroughly....
he's a very good professor but he can put you to sleep if you don't stay focused.
I don't know if it is just me but this class drags forever and ever and there is just so much information to grasp. Plus the test is like one big essay. Ew
He does not have very good teaching skills. His multiple choice questions are very hard and have nothing to do with his lectures.
test were so hard and dont match his lectures. he made us read two books along with reading a ton of chapters out of the text book...hes not worth the trouble, you can easilly fall asleep but then he'll make a scene out of anyone who does
HORRIBLE
Okay guys, this is what you need to do with Mauck.... 1. GO TO CLASS-on his exams, the essay is worth 60% and are mainly from the lectures. 2. READ THE MATERIAL- all the multiple choice (which are pretty hard) come from the text. 3. GO TO SI SESSIONS!- they will help you organize and go over any questions. This class is tough, but just work hard.
Hated This Class!!! This guy is sooo unapproachable and so were his SI's they were all kinda ****s. anyway, study, READ!! and go to class! his test material is very text based!
ok, i really didnt think he was that bad. If you just read and look over your notes you should be fine. The books do suck but other than that it was ok.
I love his class its exciting
With this teacher you HAVE to go to class His essay questions (60% of the test) is straight from the lectures. His short answer questions are all from the reading but if you just read it you should be fine. (it is hard to stay awake sometimes)
Mauck's tests are not necessarily hard as they are strenuous. I made an A on every one but you have to read two books and memorize at least two essay outlines to make that grade. Even though i hate preparing for his class, he really is one of the best profs i have had. I have realized that i actually learn the information rather than memorize.
he is not a hard teacher at all. HOWEVER his SI's and TA's are the hardest graders ever! READ READ READ and READ...if you read the material once you will need to read it at least 3 more times to catch every detail! trust me you'll need it!
I really liked him.. but ya you definately have to read and reread! It's easy to make an A if you prepare well.
Great professor but his TAs really grade way too hard and expect way too many details. They were very hard to get along with and could care less if they failed you or not!!!! Don't go and talk to them all you will get is a couple of extra points that wouldn't help ya anyway!!
i thought he was a good teacher. sticks to the syllabus and if you pay attention you will do fine on the tests.
Mauck is a ****. This man knows history, but is a terrible teacher. He is monotoned, very rude, will call people out for sleeping in a class of 300, which is funny if it's not you. He will call you out if you try and leave early also, or if you're talking. Tests are very difficult, TAs grade real hard, not to mention they aren't very intelligent...
his class is hard and the SIs and TAs grade really tough. i did learn a lot!! its alot of reading. DONT leave early!! he will freak out!
Although there's a lot to learn in this class he goes at a much better pace than Brennan who talks so fast it's hard to get anything down! Gets you to laugh a lot some lessons with funny side stories and facts, then other lessons it's kinda dull. Is very liberal with adding extra credit to exams though even if his TAs aren't, sometimes by 5 points!
Mauck is a great guy. i found his lectures very interesting. if you like history at all he's the guy to listen to. attendance helps. if you go, you will find out that your test grades will magically increase.
first of all, mauck was so incredible that after i took him for 1310, me and my friend nick took him AGAIN the following semester for 1320. mauck owns, he is always straight chillin, and he's one of the smartest guys i've ever had the pleasure of taking a class from. but he's always down to help his students if you just ask. ps he loves stars.
great guy, very knowledgeable, just don't be rude and leave class or sleep
he is good
Great teacher! Go to class, dont leave early or fall asleep. His TA's are friendly and easy to talk to, GO TO SIs!!! They really help. Im taking his class for 1320 because I enjoyed his it so much
His final is multiple choice, right off the review. If you go to the SI sessions they do the reviews and the essay outlines for you. Lectures are pretty interesting, I'm taking Mauck again for 1320!
freaking HARD. wayyyyy too much reading. grades incredibly hard. ridiculous class to take. youll be lucky to pass
Just go to the SI sessions.. and make an outline of each essay and go over it with your grader it will help.. its a lot of reading and memorization but you will pass if you read and attend class and SI's!!! Saved my grade!!
great teacher, knows his stuff, fun to count his triple um's. just dont fall asleep. talk to your grader assistant person after the first test and they will tell you what the are looking for in essays, they gave me a few points and i went up a letter grade on the next test.
I enjoyed taking Mauck for my first history class, he uses powerpoint for notes and I didn't read very much and I still got an A, though I attended some SI sessions b/c the SI was so hot, I am signed up for his 1320 course :D
He is very interesting, uses power points and the hist book on the test. attendance is mandatory, but he was sick for almost half of the classes. If you like this guy take his class
I liked him a lot. If you take good notes then you will have all the information you need for your essay outline. He goes over point by point what he wants you to say so there is no question of what to study. No quizes. Do not leave in the middle of his lecture! You will get yelled at. I would recommend him to anyone.
I agree with others that his grading is hardcore. You really need to know your stuff, and READ READ READ! He has you read about 4 books and you must know the material. The best thing about him though, he will boost your 78 to an 80 or your 88 to an 90. That saved my butt in his class!
Its more of a reading intensive course than a WI! Gives u 4 possible essays that will be on the test & only picks 1 so u have to write 4 outlines, 60% of ur grade is the essay 40% comes from the book, which u are REQUIRED to read like 4 chapters 150pgs and he picks 4 things(events or people)to ask you about. u kinda gotta know everything + 4 novels
He is a great professor. He gives a specific review a week and half in advance. SI has sessions 3 times a week. And double sessions where she went over ALL the essays in detail. TAKE HIM! I left both histories for my senior year because I heard they were hard, and I pulled out an A.
Very hard prof. He is a stickler for detail and will you a bad grade for it too! I got a 47 on my first test because of that. I made A's on my next two tests so you need to pay attention to detail and read everything he gives you. Most of his questions from books are at the last 2/3 of the book.
Goes fast and gets sidetracked but knows his stuff and is pretty clear about what will be on exams. If you read your books and go to class the exams will be fine. Nice guy if you need to see him outside of class.
I took his evening class so I only went once a week. His lectures are interesting but he doesn't require a textbook so TAKE GOOD NOTES! He gives essay exams and gives you the list of essay questions ahead of time so you have no excuse not to make an A! Great professor and a cool guy.
This guy is a great professor. Funny and helpful, always willing to answer questions. Come to class and take notes, and you'll do fine. The exam reviews are the exact questions from the test. He doesn't use a textbook, but he makes you read 3 short books throughout the semester instead. He doesn't make you remember exact dates either! I made a 102.
At first I thought this professor would ramble a lot and not get through the material, but even though he gets sidetracked he always finishes his lectures. He's great because you read novels instead of a textbook, which is much more interesting. I want to take him again for 1320.
If you're taking History at T state, be sure to get this guy. If you do reviews for test and take notes you should easily get an A. He actually makes class interesting and he is goofy as hell which keeps you listining. TAKE HIM
Very good professor, but it's almost necessary that you attend most if not all lectures to do well on exams. The powerpoints provided are basically only bullet points with no elaboration. Interesting professor, I'm genuinely dissapointed I can't take his 1320 class.
What an awesome professor! I learned more than I expected. He really understands college students. This is one of those classes where it takes more effort to fail then it does to pass. GO TO CLASS and take good notes and you'll easily have an A.
Great professor. I took him for Space Race and the class was very informative and exams were not that difficult. Just come to class and take good notes and you should be fine.
He is a really good professor and very knowledgeable. He's not fond of textbooks because he thinks they are overpriced. If you go to class, you will pass this class. HOWEVER, DO NOT BE LATE OR LEAVE BEFORE CLASS IS OVER, HE WILL CALL YOU OUT ON IT! GO TELL HIM BEFORE HAND.
Mauck is awesome. His lectures are not boring at all. He doesn't take attendance but it is best if you do go all of his lectures will come in handy for the test. There isn't an assigned text but for every test you'll have to read a novel related to what you are talking about(chill it's not that bad) Take it, I reccomend it.
His class can get confusing at times, just because he covers so much information in a short time frame. His test are all essay questions, and you have to read a book for each exam. He does take your highest grade and counts it twice though. If you like history take him, because you will like this class.
I found the class easy. Mauck is a good lecturer, and he gives lots of opportunities for extra credit on tests. The only thing that was a pain was the reading, but if you don't wait until the last minute it shouldn't be too hard. Also he doesn't care about attendance, which is nice.
Great lecturer with a dominating personality. If you show up to class and take detailed notes this is an A for sure. Test are all short answer/essay and this was a much more reasonable class than my 1320.He also doesn't use textbooks, but requires reading novels pertaining to course material. He also is BIG on no phones and staying the entire class
Dr. Mauck is an AWESOME professor! He is very knowledgeable and his lectures are very clear. Go to class, stay awake, take good notes, do the whole review the night before the test and you will get an A+! Those who say he's not a good teacher should not even be in college. I would recommend Dr. Mauck to everyone!
His lectures are good. Take alot of notes from power points. No textbooks but, requires 3 novels. His pet peeves are student using phone text ,sleepy (he will wake u up!) and walk out of class while he lectures. Not lot of extra credits to pull up your grades except for finals. The seating in TMH building are uncomfortable!
Mauck is a great lecturer and makes things clear. He doesnt use a textbook which is great but his TA was somewhat rude. He has some odd quirks and DO NOT LEAVE HIS CLASS EARLY. He will call you out and its embarassing. If you sit, take notes and pay attention youre fine. He has alot of rules but if you follow them you will get alot out of the class
He likes to ramble a lot, but if you go to class and take notes his class is very easy to get an A or B in. Also the textbooks you read are directly on the test.
If you take notes in class, you're golden. My final exam was 10 multiple choice questions and I got a 95. He prefers to use novels instead of a textbook, and I found them to be pretty interesting reads. The in-class essay exams are easy, as he gives partial credit when due. He's also pretty funny. Definitely a good prof.
One of the nicest professors I have ever had. Very helpful when I needed some EC. Cares about what he is teaching. I would highly suggest him.
Show up EVERY class day because his tests are 100% lecture based.Does not use a textbook, but you are required to read three novels,1 for each test. 2 tests are short essays, and the final is multiple choice. It took me 5 minutes to finish it. If you can, take his night class or the smaller 40 person class. TAKE DR. MAUCK IF YOU CAN! GREAT TEACHER!
I have never fallen asleep in any class as much as I did in this one. Mauck looks and sounds like Dr. Phil, makes his tests short-essay format, and basically requires attendance. A core History class shouldn't be this much of a hassle, I don't know why they don't do multiple choice. It's like they want students to hate taking history.
His class is redic easy. just pay attention and you can easily make a 100 on his tests. just write everything that you can remember on the essays and you will get full credit. Dont complain because you have to go to class. you are paying so you might as well go. Tries to work with you and is super kind.
Mauck makes history very interesting. Abide by his rules and take very detailed notes and you will be just fine. He grades very fair and is helpful in office hours.
Professor Mauck is one of the greatest teachers at Texas State. Take him for history if you get the chance, you won't regret it. You will not learn about history from this perspective from anyone else! Great great great class. Easy A if you make an effort and come to class. Great lecturer, you will never fall asleep.
Great Professor. Attendance is mandatory for success at exams. Lectures on slides, but exams also include materials from class discussion
Great prof, he really loves what he teaches. I really find his lectures engaging and interesting because he's so passionate. Does tend to get off topic quite a bit, though, although it's not disruptive for me. 3 tests, 2 written answer and the final is 10 multiple choice questions. No textbook, just one book for each exam. Take him!!
Mauck is a great professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches! This was my second semester with him. The attendance isnt mandatory and hes posts all powerpoints online. I didnt go to many classes but i still managed a high "B". You must read the books though or else you'll fail. and sparknotes wont help. I recommend him greatly!
I liked him and his class. Just take very good notes, the more details the better. There was three exams, first two were intensive writting with 5 questions on material and 2 on the book and the last exam is multiple choice. I recommend his class just dont fall asleep. Best thing, no text book, you can find the books at the library or online
The grading in this class could not be more ridiculous. I am an A/B student and I failed this course even after studying for hours on end. Nice guy, fun to listen to, but DO NOT take this class here.
He's lectures are SO hard to follow. The grading for the tests are absolutely ridiculous. I've never failed a class before and I bombe this one. He's a nice guy but this class was way too difficult. I wouldn't suggest him to anyone looking for a good grade.
Absolute worst professor I''ve ever had at Texas State. Confusing tough on grading impossible to understand and his TA is the biggest jerk you''ll ever meet. Take someone else for U.S. History considering it''s a core class you are required to take.
Absolutely amazing. So passionate. He's a bit odd, but his class is great. No textbook, just a book to read for the class. He gets upset when attendance drops and incentives us showing up. PP are on his site. Full, easy review, easy tests. Will go out of his way to help you, and not just in History. Nicest guy on campus. Great professor.
Professor Mauck is a good professor. He really knows what he is talking about. He gives reviews for the tests. His TA grades and sometimes does not seem consistent in grading. Tests have extra credit or curve usually Class is not hard at all. Have to read chapter books for the test that are ESSENTIAL. Dont get on your phone or he will call you out.
He is an awesome teacher. I had to retake this course because my other history professor wasn't so great and i passed this class with flying colors. His tests are so easy and I found myself loving the class (I hated history before Professor Mauck). I would recommend this teacher to anyone. He doesn't even require a textbook.
He sort of gets off topic a lot, and he thinks he's really funny. Overall it felt like an average class. I would take it again with him rather than any of the other history teachers I have had at Texas State.
Do not get on your phone or he will get upset. Overall good class. Take good notes and you will do good on the test. Read the chapter books, they are not that long and are easy reads. He also gives reviews for his tests.
Professor Mauck is very strict about his no technology policy: last semester he had a pretty lengthy argument with a student in class because she had a phone out. Pretty standard otherwise. 3 tests, you must read a chapter book for each test. 2 short answer and the final is multiple choice. Go to class, take good notes, and read easy A.
I don't like history but I was all about this class. Tests are very clear, he gives you a review and picks questions straight from it for test. Short answer, you choose 5 out of 7 questions to answer. You have to read a short book for each test but they are easy. One time he gave everyone an extra point on a test because the Spurs won.
All the lecture powerpoints are online. When taking notes, write down what he says not what the slides say. All the test answers come from what he is saying in lecture. Easy A if you take good notes! He doesn't believe in textbooks.
Don't let his good rating fool you, it's not a blow off class! There are only 3 tests (including the non cumulative final) so take realllly good notes and study hard for the short answer tests with the TA because they will grade it. Mauck has field experience and is very intelligent but he has some health issues
Mauck is probably the best history teacher you could take at Texas state. The TA grades your test though which are short answer besides the final. He gives a review over it all. I suggest going to an SI session in the middle of the semester so the TA and Mauck know you actually want to get a good grade.
This class is not easy by any means if you do not hold the passion for the subject. There are three tests. 2 essay and the last one is multiple choice. For the essays, pay attention to lecture. You have to read a book but I recommend just knowing the important stuff. The multiple choice was easy. Attend review session. Not a bad class at all!
Mauck is mostly a sweet goofball. He will call you out for being on your phone. Only grades are tests. 3 tests - 2 short answers, 1 multiple choice final. No textbook, but you have to read a book for each test. Just go to class. Take notes over what he says, not what the slide says. TA grades tests so make sure to go to SI sessions and review days.
Mauck is a loud goofball, never boring. Lectures are interesting. Just go to class, tests are over his views of history so you can't google answers. 3 grades total - 2 short answer response tests, 1 non-cumulative final. IA grades test, he's a tough grader, make sure your answers are as in-depth as possible. Don't use your phone during class.
Don't take this class. Unorganized lectures and unclear grading criteria. Worst class I've had as a history major at Texas State.
Mauck class is actually pretty easy. Don't let his written exams scare you at all. (5 short answer question and you only have to answer 4) Attendance isn't mandatory but it is really helpful. He expects you know the info that HE says not what Wikipedia says. He gives out super helpful review before each exam. No quizzes or homework.
Dr. Mauck is such a goofball! He sometimes goes off-topic in lectures but this is in no means a blow off class. The TA grades the tests.
Mauck is a good professor considering the difficulty of History courses at Texas State. If you go to lectures and take good notes, you'll do well on the exams. READ THE BOOKS HE ASSIGNS. The last exam is multiple choice, first 2 are short essay style. Questions are very specific and from lecture.
Don't take this professor. I'm not exaggerating when I say I worked hard in his class and failed every test. No homework or quiz to bump your grade up. Just 3 tests. you also have to buy a book, one for each test. Just don't take him. Ok.
Dr. Mauck's tests are specific, but they are doable. He gives out study guides and as long as you know all the information you will be ok. The IA grades the papers, and he was picky, but the biggest issue is that there are 40 or so questions on the study guide but only 5 on the test, but I memorized each answer and did very well. I would take him.
The TA grades super strict
Dr. Mauck knows what hes talking about. Attendance isn't mandatory to pass, but you won't pass if you don't come. He assigns books to read for exams, he posts slides but the answers for exams are in lectures and not the slides. He is extremely against phone use and I would compare him to a child. He complains a lot and can be over-dramatic.
No textbook is needed but a separate book is assigned for each test and there will be specific questions over whichever book you chose worth 30%. 2 short answer tests with 5 questions and final is multiple choice. Don't text in class or leave early unless you want to be called out and scolded. Will be taken again for 1320.
No textbook only books you have to read for each exam. Short answer tests and depending on IA will determine your grade. Final was much easier than the rest. Write down what he says not what's on his slides. HATES TEXTERS!! Overall he was okay. Go to class because if you miss you miss a lot of information. Emails you back quickly. Seemed caring.
I really didn't like this class. He canceled class quite a bit which I didn't mind at all. The downside was that he would rush thru his lectures the next class. There is no book but the small books you have to read for test can be pretty boring. So read in advance. go to the ia and ta meetings cause going to lecture isn't going to be enough.
I will say this, no matter who you take, HIST is hard at Texas State. Theres a reason the grades are so bad. Mauck can make lectures interesting, but also has a short temper. If you are going there, make sure to only take notes and do nothing else. the 3 tests are alright if you study hard enough. But no way to make it alive if you fail one.
Tests are very lecture heavy. There are 3 tests. The first 2 are essay style and the final is multiple choice. His tests, you get 7 questions and answer 5 from lecture. Then 3 questions from a book you read. There is no textbook. There is a choice of 2 books per test you can read. His lectures are very unorganized. He goes off subject.
AMAZING LECTURES!
His lectures are interesting but he goes very fast and gets off topic a lot. I typed my notes and basically tried to get everything he said because you had to know it all to complete the test review, even though the test is only 7 Q's. Not bad for a HIST Prof at TXST though. Talk to the TA after each written test and pay attention in class.
I loved Mauck. His lectures were always interesting but try to get down a lot of the info that he says in class, not what wiki says. He goes pretty fast but you get used to it after like the 3rd class. He is very strict on phones so do not use your phone. His test are 5q's over lecture and 2 over book u read. I would take him again.
Loved Mauck. No textbook, just 3 small chapter books you read for the school exam. Take notes over what he says, dont just write the PowerPoints. If you dont go to class, you will not pass. I went to almost every SI session and it helped ALOT! 2 exams are all short answer and final is multiple choice. I got an A in the class. Would take him again
Hes a very passionate and knowledgable professor. He has a lot of experience in what he teaches. BUT there are only 3 grades for the entire course and they are test grades. They are short answer not multiple choice. His IA grades very hard and takes every detail into account, so be detailed in your answers. Hard class to pass
Mauck is very passionate about history, but his class is quite difficult. The first two tests are short answer based on his lectures, which are long. Make sure to be really specific with your answers. The TA gives a review session before tests though.
He is an awful teacher. You read 3 books for each test. Very lecture heavy and the test are 70% lecture and 30% book. Power points he post are useless so you have to listen to him. He is all over the place. Very strict class room rules, not allowed to leave for the restroom or leave early. Gets mad easily. He will yell. do not take.
Mauck is a character. you get 2 tests and then the final counts for 2 more but its multiple choice. read the books even though theyre hard to get a hold of. also there are a bunch of quizlets from previous years. Hes super weird about phones and leaving class but sometimes he cancels so thats nice. Overall interesting lectures, but tough grader
So his class is very very very lecture heavy. He goes off topic all the time and is very inconsiderate when it comes to needing to use the bathroom (will call you out). It also doesnt help that the only grades you will get in this class are from the 3 exams you take. Horrible professor
His lectures were very interesting. He also gave out study guides for the tests
Only graded on 3 exams. VERY lecture heavy. Very passionate and makes the information easy to learn. Take good notes and you will do fine in his class.
Grades on three exams. Some reading, some videos to watch (which are tested on) but no textbook! FASCINATING lectures with PowerPoint slides that are clear and easy to understand. Exams are medium to hard but not if you attend every lecture and take good notes.
Dr.Mauck gives you so many cool and interesting fun facts and keeps the class very entertaining. There were no textbooks or any readings but rather documentaries. you must go to every lecture because Dr.Mauck does old-school lectures.Power points have talking points so you have to write down everything he says, literally. the very fun class overall!
Professor Mauck strongly believes in coming to class for the information he provides. When taking the two or three tests (only grades of the semester), he explicitly states that the questions must be answered using information that he will speak on during lecture. Honestly if you just show up and take notes, completing the review guide will be easy
I am currently taking History I online with Professor Mauck and he is a good professor; he really knows his stuff and wants to share it with everyone. There are only 3 papers for the course, and he gives a whole week to write them. There are no notes or textbooks, but it's easy to type notes while he's talking.
His lecture's were mid. Had picture slide shows and just lectured but would miss information or go too fast. Attendance is mandatory, Open ended exams with no review. Only 3 grades, Exam 1,2 and Final. Not much opportunities for extra credit. I'm not sure for everyone else, but personally it was very difficult. Especially if you miss hear him.
The teacher is very boring I would not recommend taking him. Only three grades and they're all handwritten tests. He constantly rambles off-topic and doesn't know how to use zoom or technology for that matter, making class way more complicated. He also never answers questions because he doesn't know how to access the chat on zoom. Wouldnt recommend
Worst professor I have ever had. If you take his class, do not miss it or you will fail. There are three tests that create your entire grade, so no homework, discussion posts, or extra credit. He ignores disability accommodations and is blatantly rude to many students who ask questions. He is also very unprofessional. !!!AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Terrible professor. Unprofessional, rude, and unconcerned with how students are doing in his class. He can't use Zoom or any other technology well enough to hold class regularly. He has health issues that make him an unreliable professor. His GA seems to be afraid of him.
There are only 3 tests in which you must pay attention to every LITTLE detail in lectures to even be able to complete the test, which lectures are 3 hours long. His slides are very short, more like talking points so you can't even go back to review. Would not recommend this to my worst enemy :) Probably the worst class I have ever taken.
Worst prof ever. His classes are for 3 hours online where he "lectures" but mostly goes off topic. Worst of all, your only grades are 3 exams in which he grades them so hard, and the questions are based off of evry little detail he says in class, which is impossible when he goes off topic so often. Had issues all semester and doesnt even teach us.
Don't listen to these people. He is an awesome professor. He had to stop teaching midway through the course because he has health complications. These students are just being rude. His class is super easy if you just take good notes. The tests are all open note and take home. There's no reason you shouldn't pass this class.
