interesting class
Awesome & Interesting class. Great teacher. No tests, just papers
2 papers and group presentation, no tests. easy class.
This guy is bad ass
This guy knows his ****! If you want to read about Gangsters, Druglords, Smugglers, Black Markets, and the Underworld, this is the class. We read five books, about one every two weeks, two book reviews, no tests, and one primary source research paper.
awesome guy and really knows his stuff, 2 papers and a presentation. you will learn a lot in this class just be ready to write a good paper. easy going down to earth guy and understand students well.
Must write three papers, one is a group project. Only book you need to buy is all god's children. There are no tests, so you don't even have to take notes. Easy class. But papers are confusing as to what he wants.
Dr. Mac knows everything about everything. He is very funny and makes class a joy to come to. You will read like you have never read in you life, 1 book/week. No tests, only 3 horrible group projects. Don't cross him ideologically, just nod & smile.
Not quite clear as to what he wants in the papers. 2 papers. 1 group project. You NEED two other books in order to answer your second paper so only having the All Gods Children book will not suffice!!! Very misleading.
RUN LIKE HELL..... Talks alot! Very unclear on his assigned papers! No test! NO note taking! just a very stressful class, no need to buy the books, you won't need them.
eh...Maybe his other courses are better. He is vague when attempting to help you with your papers...at least he was with me. But if you can write a good paper without much guidance then go for it. I I'm geting an A. RISKY to take if you want an A tho.
easy class, easy A. 2 papers and group project. write what the prompt says to write and you'll get an A on the papers.don't buy any of the books,u don't need them. definately take McIllwain!
KINDA LOST ON WHAT HE WANTS ON PAPERS; EZ TO TALK TO; VERY HELPFUL; FUNNY, BUT CORNY AT TIMES; DON'T HAVE TO BUY BOOKS CAUSE THERE ARE NO QUIZZES ON THEM OR TESTS!
One of the best teachers at SDSU he is so nice and makes the class enjoyable by cracking jokes all the time. Just do the work and you should be fine
great teacher, knows a lot. i went into the class very intimdated. but i learned more than i ever have in any other class. if you talk to him he will help you a lot. he might chew you out first but he will help.
Very conservative and Frat boy like. Most people like him and enjoyed this class but I think you have to be in the military or love George W and be pro War in Iraq to really see eye to eye with this prof.
He's extremely conservative and pro-war, pro-Bush (come on now--who can be pro-Bush these days?). I hated the class and couldn't stand his smug attitude. Don't take him!
Very interesting class, but need to take CJ310 first. He is a little intimidating at first, but fairly easy in the end.You read 5 books and write a paper on 4 of them.He knows his s***,must take!!!
McIllwain is a fantastic professor who is extremely knowledgeable. Yes he is conservative, but if you are such an intellectual retard that you can't handle hearing from opposing points of view maybe you should re-think this whole college thing. Take him.
Very vague on what he wants your paper to focus on. Don't rely on the paper hand-out to direct you on how to write your paper. He is unwilling to negotiate with the class when it's obvious that he has made an error. Keep an open mind when taking his class. His lessons one sided. Don't take his class
Very good teacher he knows the material and has a ton of experience in the CJA field. I enjoyed the class although you do have to work. As for people saying he is one sided i did not see that at all, he is not a clueless liberal like most teachers at state but he is balanced.
He changed the syllabus for this summer, but it was still a piece of toast. He has 2 blue book exams, but u can use ur books he assigns you 2 read. McIllwain made this an interesting class. He knows so much about criminal justice 2 make this exciting. Great professor, easy class as long as u go. Overall, he is great as Madhavi McCall or Graubart.
This class is not easy. You have like 4 books and 4 papers and a group project. He makes this clear from the beginning thouhg. Class is interesting and he does help you. No easy A. He will not tolerate plagarism.
Class was very interesting. Learned a lot not in books. Not easy though. Research paper has to be around 20 pages with a lot of research. Also have to do 2 10 page book reports. Lots of reading. think there was like 6 books. class was interesting but not eay. o and he isnt one sided. has no bias and very intelligent.
Typical Mcillwain class. 6 books, online reading, 10 reading syllabus' and 2 huge papers. Class is interesting, and you actually get and education.
he thinks he's really funny when he's actually just smug. very one-sided presentation of many issues. wouldn't recommend him.
McIllwain is awesome. Tough class with a lot of reading but you will learn a lot. He is actually very interested in the subject matter he teaches unlike other professors who get a Phd just so people will call them Doctor. Gives you a totally different view of the world from the point of view of Organized Crime.
okay, yeah, i agree with the other person. he makes these jokes that arent funny at all.i kind od feel sory for the guy. he makes jokes and gets blank stares...take a hint. and WHO shows the class baby pictures right before the midterm. i understand he's proud of his kid, but we obviously had better things to do.
Very intersting class which offers a lot to learn. There was a lot of reading with 8 books. Two tests which are essay style and a group project. If you go to the lectures and pay attention you can get an A
He knows a lot of information but def has a frat boy arrogance and is very one sided. typical guy in scademic who has read a few books about a topic and thinks he knows everything. the material studied is interesting. hes overrated but ull learn a lot though more from the material then him
Good guy, does his research and makes class interesting. He has mastered the material and has the ability to teach it. Good teacher.
Awesome professor. Get to know him by attending his office hours, that will distinguish yourself from the rest of the class. Lots of reading and big papers, Grading is really not that bad. should get an A or B no problem just read!
Best professor I've ever had, hardest class I've taken. The Work: We read 9 books, wrote 3 papers (3-4 pages single spaced), and the final was an additional paper (6 pages single spaced). Don't let the paper length scare you, they are easy to write, based on the books. I received two A's and one B on the papers. Haven't got the final back yet.
Topic was Holocaust and WWII, and Mac is very knowledgable about both. He has much content to share but is a poor communicator, did not put very much effort into planning for the class and manages to make every point about himself. Found him to be very irritating and pompous. May be worth it depending on topic of class, but prepare for frustration.
I have never learned so much about any other topic than with this professor. The class is long, but the things you learn are essential to understanding how people think. This is the most interesting class I have taken so far.
If you want an easy Honors 113 class DO NOT TAKE THIS. He gives you 7 books to read which you will site in all of your 6 essays. Essays are usually between 3-8 pages. Very interesting man and very good lectures but he does not dismiss early and after the first hour youre ready to go. Grades based on essay scores and participation.
He is a great professor! If you are interested into what he is saying, then your connection to the class will be amazing. He makes you read a lot, but all of it is important and interesting. He not only teaches material well but also gives tons of insight into life.
Take a different class. Not worth the drama.
His WW1 class was easy going. There are around 7 books you "have" to read but you don't really have to. There are four assignments that require the books so you can sift through it to find quotes and the final was a reflection on the books. Final needs quotes from the books too so buy them or go online to access the books. Lectures were boring.
He lets his teaching assistant grade. This makes this the worse class I ever took. Something needs to be done about this problem. Horrible grader!
The professor assigns 4-5 assignments per week to include long movies and lots of reading. He is an extremely hard grader and believes in giving zero's. He doesn't believe in effort, only content. If he doesn't agree with writing, diction, content, you get a zero. He acts like we are grad students. Be prepared for bad grades.
McIllwain is knowledgable on the subject, but his class periods were nearly three hours of him talking. Four 10 page essays over the course of the semester and two discussion posts for 10/16 weeks. He's a very easy grader but he doesn't put grades in until the last possible minute, as in no grades for any of the essays until final grades were due.
DO NOT take this CJ300 online course. 4 weekly discussion assignments on long articles, books and movies. TA grades everything as if youre in a masters English course. Expect 0/10s for your hours worth of work. The school director had to ask him to reduce his workload down to 4 assignments. This class is horrible ! STAY AWAY NO MATTER WHAT.
WORST class I have taken at state DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR . This online course assigns 15+ hours worth of homework every week just to get a 0/10 if he doesnt like your opinion! Rude professor gave ENTIRE class anxiety and depression DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
If youre looking for an easy online class, do not take this Professor. He assigns 4-5 assignments a week that all require over 3-4 hours each. His TA does all the grading and gives most students a failing grade on every assignment.
The condescending, inexperienced TA grades this class way too harshly. There is no clear grading criteria, basically if the TA doesn't agree with you, you get a bad grade. Feedback is given by the TA and the professor says he is included but no way to know for sure. Way too much homework. Worst online class I've ever taken
DO NOT TAKE THIS MANS CLASS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! Horrible teacher, requires you to read 4 lengthy book. His TA does all his grading and if he does not agree with what you are saying you receive a bad grade regardless of if you put effort into the assignment. You have 4-5 assignments per week that require 10+ hours of time. Also very one sided.
I repeat, DO NOT take this class, he assigns so much homework for a ONLINE 300 class, he gives 3 books to read and a textbook, you have to do 15 hours of hw literally every week and his TA grades like this a graduates RWS Class. Worst decision of my life. The only class that I think that I will actually fail. Do not take him in person, nor online.
This class is honestly HORRIBLE The professor gives so much work to do each week is pretty rude when you email him. Him and his TA give out zeros left and right! This class is so stressful and discouraging! Youll spend hours doing the work and get a failing grade. Not to mention he expects you to read 4 books and "everything is fair game for exams"
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is quite honestly the worst and hardest class ive taken so far. 20 hours of work per week on assignments and the prompts make no sense. Makes us pay to watch 2 hour films, gives out zeros, more than half the class has an F. I dont think im gonna pass. Doesnt even teach and not even learning about criminal justice >:(
Horrible professor. Definitely do not recommend taking this class..
Beware. Worst class Ive ever taken. The amount of work he gives is ridiculous. Not to mention he grades as if youre in law school. Totally made me uninterested in even learning, just trying to get by with finishing the assignments on time.
This is the worst online course I have ever taken in multiple years at SDSU. Mcilwain required 50 total assignments, two papers, a midterm and final for an INTRODUCTION to Criminal Justice course. The structure and organization of the class is terrible, and the assignment prompts are terrible as well. Don't take this class.
Worst class ever. Be ready to read around 100 pages a week. There's no way of getting out of the reading. (4) 350 word assignments due each week. Midterm paper was extremely hard. Final can be one or two essays. Very slow and extremely tough grading. Yes, you can get a zero on any assignment even on the midterm or final. Please stay away !!!
This class consisted of way too much work every week. The professor didn't grade nearly any of our assignments until we were 12 weeks into the semester. He assigns loads of homework and grades VERY strictly. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I took him for CJ300 and it was a class with a heavy workload however most of it was interesting and I learned a lot. The work is self explanatory and not hard it can just be a lot of time. He is more than willing to help you if you reach out to him and is a personable, good teacher.
Great professor, learned a lot in the class. However the workload was intense and all busy work. Sometimes we'd watch a 2 hour film only to answer one question. There's so much reading, and the main textbook is hard to understand (the author is vague, yet the professor asks questions about the textbook that are very specific).
Alright after seeing all these negative reviews I though I'd give a positive. I was for sure overwhelmed when I first started this course, but he stated it was his first time teaching online and he updated his course requirements constantly. I'm not sure if he eased up when students complained with grading, but I definitely have learned a lot!
He assigns a lot of reading (including 4 books) and papers. You WILL have to do a lot of reading and writing. If you want an easy class, don't take his. But if you're willing to put in the work, his class will be one of the most insightful and interesting classes you'll ever take. I learned more from this class (CJ572) than most others.
I did receive an A, but this class was difficult. Prof is very nice when you talk to him though and ask questions. You write/read a lot, and he is a slow grader w lots of assignments. I did learn a lot tho despite feeling overwhelmed the entire sem. Hard work pays off, and he notices it. Proofread, do assingments at START of sem
I wanted to leave a comment due to seeing some negative responses. By far the most knowledgable teacher I have had at state. I have learned more in his class than the rest of my college career combined. He gives good feedback and pushes you. With that being said, it is a heavy load of work, so only take the class if you want to push yourself.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. McIllwain. For an online course, there was a TON of work involved... lots of reading and writing. I would have preferred some online lectures because he seems SUPER knowledgable and awesome. I got an A in the end, but it wasn't easy at all. Take him if you're willing to work, and you will learn a lot.
I have never read so much or written so many papers in a single class, but the material will stick with you. His feedback is great and VERY honest. If you don't follow directions, he will let you know. This is absolutely not the kind of class that you can bluff your way through. If an education is important to you, Dr. Mack has you covered.
I would recommend staying away from taking this class with this professor. He grades very hard and is very picky... if you have a differing opinion from him, you will not get a decent grade. I have never rated a class before but this professor made me feel so strongly in doing so.
Dr. McIllwain is one of those professors that doesnt hand out an A to all of his students without effort being put in. Hes firm, shows tough love but hes very fair in his grading. He establishes solid foundation for what university curriculum looks like in the field of Criminal Justice. Extremely knowledgeable and provides help outside of class.
Dr. McIllwain is truly one of the greatest professors in the state of California if not even in the country. Hes a highly efficient professor who inspires critical thinking in his students from the materials that he provides and sets up students for challenges in the real world. Was a skeptic when I first signed up for his class but now its GOAT.
Dr. McIllwain is certainly one of those professors that doesnt just give out A to anyone that shows up and puts in minimal effort. Hes firm with how he grades but hes very fair. He shows how university curriculum should be implemented and the concepts that he taught in a highly efficient manner. Put in some effort and the class becomes enjoyable
At first I was skeptical of taking his class after seeing the overly brown criticism here on this website. However after I started getting the hang of how the course is layer out with a specific purpose, it became very enjoyable. Dr. McIllwain is honest and clear about how the assignments are and gives one a grade that he/she deserves. Take him!!!!
Dr. McIllwain is a professor who is very respected not only in the field of Criminal Justice but for his firm and fairness when it comes to grading. Dr. McIllwain is a highly intelligent individual who is extremely knowledgeable and the concepts that are taught by him really sticks even at the end of the class. Excellent professor Without a doubt!
Dr. McIllwain is a great professor and one of my favorite. At first it may seem overwhelming being in his class but he teaches you like a graduate student so that you are ready for the real world. Very knowledgeable and a great challenge for those that that cares about their education. The stuff you learn there will be remembered down the line!
Awesome professor. Take him. Hes very good at what he does and he sets you up well not only for other criminal justice courses but graduate school and real world as well. Gives you the grade that you deserve and if every professor teaches like him, all his students would be prepared for PhD level work by the time they graduate with a bachelors.
Awesome professor. Although Dr. McIllwain doesn't show it, he cares about the well-being of his students by making sure that they are set up to succeed out in the real world by being reasonably critical of his students. Very informative and makes students think outside the box on concepts that are too generic. One of the greatest professor ever!
He is passionate about what he teaches and makes it interesting. There is a significant amount of work that you have to put in and his TA, who can often come off as condescending, is a very specific grader. You will need to dedicate a lot of time to this class. As someone who works FT and goes to school FT it was definitely a balancing act.
AWFUL. Late to his own zoom meetings, unclear grading criteria, lectured for 3 hrs with no breaks. Expects you to read 11 books and requires movies- COSTS $- and apply it all to four major short essays with citations and a final essay/assignment. Weighted on these major papers and participation in class. Confusing, boring, repetitive discussions
-Had to buy 8 books for this class. -Expect to hear about his own political views and his personal successes in life -Expect to hear rants about COVID and how his students are sheep for getting the jab -Lectures sucks. 3 essays through out course -Never graded my last two papers -
Dr. Mcillwain is straightforward. One of those professors that will have a positive impact on you individually and educationally.
The TA is the only person grading things, and it takes about 4 weeks to get your grade back. Grades extremely hard, and you don't know how to fix it for weeks, it all depends on the TA's opinion. Book required, lots of films, and recordings to listen to. Midterm and Final based on a 3 hour long movie and book. Midterm extremely hard. Stay away.
Too bad I only have 350 characters because I could write a book about how bad this professor is. Unclear on what he is even trying to teach. Tangents about his political biases unnecessarily. Takes too long to grade assignments & gives feedback on grammar while being incorrect about said feedback. No extra credit, all essay test on 8 books. AVOID
He knows a lot about the subject but doesn't know how to teach it well. He cares more about quantity than the quality of work. Too much homework for an entry level CJ class. Know a few other students take a different professor and mention how easy and simple the class was so I know it was the professor that made it bad. Avoid him at all costs.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
Like most, I had professor McIllwain for CJ300. With all of THAT hard work, I earned a B. Simply put; turn your phone off; open your brain to conservative and liberal views; READ; and be an adult! You're in college, you're paying for it, be the part. I had professor McIllwain in CJ310 and earned an A.
I took this class online, as it was the only section available. If you learn by just reading, then this class is for you. His "lectures" have no structure and it is unclear what you really have to know. Midterm is extremely hard and he is a tough grader. You have about 3 readings each week, most of them being 25+ pages. Good luck
Mcillwain is an OK professor. The grading is not too bad. You will have to read, A LOT. Cannot afford to be too lazy, but assignments will be due on Sundays 99.99% of the time. TA grades a lot more than he does (which is good as they grade lightly). There will be a lot of mini lectures but not mandatory to get a good grade.
If you don't have time to read don't take this prof. There is so much reading, and two assignments every two weeks on the readings. The midterm and final are very hard, one on a movie and the other on a book. He grades u very thoroughly and goes point by point on what you did wrong.
The midterm and final essays are extremely difficult and he is super picky about what you write. During review sessions, he yells at the class for not understanding class material and does nothing to help. He is rude when you ask for help and claims that you should have learned it in the readings. Do not take this professor if you want to learn.
I tagged hilarious of just how much of a joke this professor was. This class was asynchronous, and the professor did not teach a single term for CJ whatsoever this semester. Midterm/Final is extremely difficult, with a minimum 10-page requirement to do in only 2 days. This class overall felt like a huge setup for failure. Extremely disappointed.
I pretty much taught myself from reading the textbook, not from the professor. It felt more like an English class than an actual Criminal Justice class. All the assignments are essays that he grades quite harsh. He was also passive aggressive through email. I've written more essays in this class than I ever did in a RWS class.
This class honestly made me want to change my major because of how miserable he made the material. Although the topics were interesting, the overly harsh grading made it insufferable. His TA graded everything like we are graduate students. I consider myself a very good essay writer but he made me feel like I wrote at an elementary level.
Dr. McIllwain cares about every single one of his students! He does assign a lot of reading, but the course work for CJ 310 is fairly easy as long as you do the reading. YOU ARE IN COLLEGE, SO READ! If you have trouble understanding the material, you can email Dr. Mac and he will provide guidance or let you know if you are on the right track.
Dr. Mac is honestly the most thorough Professor. He is so committed to his students, and will take time to respond and help if there are any issue's. Old school and I mean that in the best way possible. Will not accept lazy half done submissions.
The most disrespectful professor you will encounter if you contact him. WHATEVER YOU NEED TO DO TO AVOID TAKING HIS CLASS DO IT. IT IS JUST NOT WORTH HAVING A LOT OF STRESS OR FAILING YOUR MAJOR.
Weekly assignments based on a ton of readings! His finals are based on these readings too so you MUST READ! He expects more than just effort which is why his TA is a tough grader. No outside research, assignemnts are based solely on HIS readings which are usually very long. It's not a difficult class just a lot of writing and reading.
gets mad if you ask something like we are supossed to know what he knows, homeworks are ok but they require so much reading, it really doesnt feel like an introductory class, L class fr, the mid-term and the exam are very very extense, complex and difficult, he is so picky about how you write and what you write, do not take this class with him fr
the textbook is the most dense, mind-numbingly boring stuff i've ever seen. would highly recommend taking notes on the reading/supplementaries- will help a lot when midterm/final rolls around. also just kind of a mean dude -- his exam reviews are just him being mad abt everything and making you feel dumb for asking simple ?s. avoid if u can
This class is all just reading & typing reports on what you read. And it doesn't feel like a CJ class. The material is dated between 1600s to 2020s. We only had about 4 days to do the midterm and a week for the final. I would avoid if possible, and trying to contact the TA is impossible. I was originally thinking I was going to fail this course. C+
Just a ton of readings and videos to watch every 2 weeks with reflection papers, almost like an English class. His TA grades you at a graduate level for every assignment and knocks off points for the tiniest things. Midterm (gives you 3 days) and final are based on everything covered in class.
If u can, do not take this class. horrible professor and horrible grader. you have a better chance at passing rocket science class than this one. trust me do not take this class if u can find someone else!
Does give feedback but very tough grader. Had a three part final and video project assigned and due within the same week. Would not recommend for six week course especially if you're taking other courses.
I would avoid this guy if you can. his midterm was a 10-page paper and he gave the prompt on Friday and the assignment was due Sunday night. God forbid you have a job or any prior commitments. Also as many people have written, he assigns a lot of reading. Which is fine, CJ is reading heavily. But the amount that he assigned is egregious.
There is a huge workload in this class. Was it unmanageable? Maybe not, but did I stay up late for an obscene amount of time over the semester to finish the work? Yeah, I did. I would go for another professor if you have a heavy semester, but if you have the time for a course, take this one. Assignments are graded reasonably if you do the work.
This class is very reading-heavy, with weekly assignments based on dense textbook readings. The grading is tough - expect the TA to be picky. Still, using tools like Unstuck ai and staying on top of the material can help. Overall, a challenging but doable course if you're willing to put in the work.
This teacher dominates lectures and rarely allows student interaction. He has pulled a knife in class for an “example” and made inappropriate choking gestures. He also becomes rude and emotional, taking out his bad days on students. His behavior creates a hostile, uncomfortable learning environment. Dropped immediately.
The best way to describe Dr Mcillwain is that he's tough but fair. He gets you ready for the real world but pushing you. He's like Gordon Ramsay of higher education. Sometimes one needs a reminder and only then, does one get the chance to push harder. I'm glad I gave this professor a chance and I learned so much under him. Thank you, Dr Mcillwain,
Just you need to stay up on the work with this professor or you can fall behind.
He has gotten very emotional and aggressive in class while lecturing. He did pull a knife as an example, he yells frequently, and you can definitely tell when he is in a bad mood since he takes it out on students. Spent a whole class defending Musk's nazi salute and then did the salute in class. get ready for mcgraw hill too. Dont take if you can.
This guy have some nerve.
He wasn't THAT bad. He could be worse, there is not that many assignments due. 2 assignments due every chapter. His lectures are boring but it's not THAT bad.
This class was awful. No WWII content, just 3 hours of chaotic rambling, graphic gore with zero warning, and nonstop political rants. Completely misleading, uncomfortable, and unprofessional. I learned nothing except how miserable a class can be.
Do not take this class. 2 biweekly mini essays were manageable, but the midterm and TWO finals were impossible. He was probably okay with students taking 5 all-nighters trying to get it done like it's grad school. Like I get it, he is a literal doctor professionally, but this is for an undergraduate degree. It should not be this rigorous. Insane.
This professor assigns exams that are overly material heavy, and is too difficult for students to handle unless hair loss from stress is involved. Please prepare yourself if you are taking this class.
I got a A, he was always understanding with assignments and respectable to me. His lectures were awful, not just boring it nothing he said made sense or went together. Nothing was current and he was disrespectful during class. Doesn't allow questions or discussion when he says outrageous comments because he never stops talking.
