Mullins knows his history, has some very dry humor, but its somewhat effective. Good intro class, 2 papers a week, and only 5 or 10 point webct quizes once a week. Pretty simply, dont have to read deep, but read effective..and an A will be your way.
You have to work in this class, but he gets the point across and you learn a lot. NOT TESTS!!
Different guy. Reminds me of a cartoon character. Reasonable grader
the key is to stay consistent. no tests just make sure you do your two papers per week
Good class, and the group work is fun
Great Prof! Makes us start our own discussion, but then has alot of cool things to say about whats not in the reading.
He's a different guy, but that's what make the course interesting. Keep up with the two EASY papers, and you'll be just fine. No tests.
Too much work this type of class. 2 papers a week are pointless. The guy doesn't stop moving around which makes it hard to pay attention to him! Serious case of adult ADHD! Pretty easy class though and a fun part of history.
Great course! Made me decide to be history major. Mullins makes you really think. Lots of papers, but worth it. If you want to learn, take him!
Great professor. Is passionate about history and wants each of his students to succeed.I strongly recommend taking this course.
hard grader no tests which is cool but you have 2 papers due every week which are graded not on content practially but on grammer. easy if you are good at writing otherwise dont take it
Good teacher. No tests, but two papers are due every week. A good trade-off in my opinion. The group work makes the class more fun and interesting.
He was an okay teacher with decent assignments. While nice, he also seemed a bit arrogant but did enjoy teaching the topic and cared for his students. The biggest reason he is only average to me is because he is big on grammer, as if we were in English.
Great prof for this required course. Has lots of energy and can make the readings come alive. Since it is mainly methods and theory this is really nice. I would take him for anything. A lot of work but worth it!
Very enhusiastic and makes class fun. Lots of papers and kind of hard grader, but still worth taking. The groups are useful and fun.
Good teacher who seems genuinely interested in his subject. Class discussions good. Too much homework for a 100 level class, but I've learned more about American history in his class than all of my high school classes combined.
This class is the biggest waste of time and money... EVER. Do not take this class if you want to learn anything of relevance.
no tests but you have 2 papers due per week. And you need to participate in your groups alot to get a A or B so attendence is a must. Dont forget like the online quizes like i did. He is goofy as hell too, and loves to catch people for plagerism so be carfull.
Good prof! He made the class fun
Changed this semester, two tests and only 1 paper a week. Tests are extremely hard. I have no idea where the questions came from. The papers are generally pretty easy and theres group work every week. Show up for class and participate, it plays a decent part in your grade. Nice guy, loves history
Kind of a funny guy, but a o.k. course. Lots of work.
I was not the biggest fan of the class. It is a lot of reading and the "overview" exams are really hard. He is an ok teacher if you like to debate EVERY OTHER DAY!! It gets old! He is hard to listen to for a while. He is very knowledgable about history and you can relearn a lot.
My favorite prof this year! Made a class that can be dull really fun. Lots of papers, so be prepared to write.
Very exciting and active teacher who makes the class fun. Lots of papers, but no final, so it is good at the end. Hes the best history prof to take for intro courses.
Mullins is a nice guy, but the class is NOT that interesting if you don't care for history. There are 30 page chapters to read once a week and take a quiz online on, there is a 3-4 page paper due every week. The online quizzes are outaegously hard, the papers are ok. TESTS ARE CRAZY HARD! He's a good guy though, likes to joke around.
Mullins is a pretty tough prof, but you learn a ton and he makes it pretty fun. Take his class if you have the time to read and learn, otherwise stay away.
great for getting people talking in class. lots of writing, but fun group works
If you like to debate and can write a 2 page paper once a week, take this! a way cool guy that can take and give jokes.
Mullins is an odd guy (you'll see), but he's really smart. He's got a funny sense of humor. Kind of a boring class, not hard or easy. Descent class, ok workload.
boring
Good class, but he grades way hard!
Brilliant man. Approachable. Fascinating choice of readings and topics. Good (and fair) grader. I am quite impressed. Workload on the heavy side, but it is a graduate class. Highly, highly recommend him and his classes!
I have to take this class again for a better grade but he was fair. I just blew off to much stuff. He makes it fun, and if you pay attention and do everything you will do allright.
really good class! Havent taken anything else with him but other students in this classed liked his intro to history class.
He's brilliant and really enjoys what he teaches. He's very approachable and seriously never lectures. Homework load is heavy, but its diverse and fun if you enjoy history! It's a dicussion based class so if you speak up and make good points you'll do well in participation. Overall I found this class very fun and interesting.
Great class! Mullins made this class a lot of fun and we learned a lot. Lots of discussion, a litle lecture. If your a Soc Studies major, you should take this class from Mullins
MULLINS WAS PRETTY GOOD AND MADE THE CLASS GO BY PRETTY FAST. LOTS OF CLASS DISCUSSION. THREE ASSIGNMENTS A WEEK BUT NO FINAL SO IF YOU HATE FINALS THIS IS A GOOD CLASS
Had Mullins last year and would say take him. He makes the class fun. But he is a tuff grader so make sure not to skip anything.
Cool topic, lots of reading, lots of writing, but not final or term paper. He's way into the class and makes it fun.
Good class for a Gen Ed
worst class ever people said it was easy but they were wrong. when you do the work his way you still fail because its not exactly what he wanted impossible to pass dont take the course big waste of time
Is extremely knowledeable about history. You gotta read allot and write a 1 page paper on the reading and every lecture you got 2 write a paper. So you write about 4 papers a week. No tests and no finals. This class takes work but is worth it. NOT AN EASY CLASS
Worst teacher I ever had! Very lazy and is a very hard grader. He doesn't even teach the class he just makes the students talk about the boring book they had to read.
Great grad class! Lots of useful readings, and discussion is the focus of the course. I learned a lot for the course.
Pretty good class about crime and responsibility. Reading and assignments every week but only short writing to do.
Nice guy, very intelligent but HORRIBLE class! He was never clear on what he wanted for the papers, it was almost impossible to get full score on them! Reading was heavy and boring. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
You have to take the race class so you should take it from him. The readings are ok and the lectures are interesting. Make sure to buy the books cuz you use them all the time.
I didnt think that I would like this class and only took it because I had to. but I really liked it and learned a lot.
Not that hard a class. Lots of small readings and writings, but no big tests. Pretty painless.
Runs it like a seminar, so lots of discussion and no exams. A 2pp paper every week, but much better than a research paper or final. And the discussions are fun.
Nice Guy,but readings are heavy and getting a perfect or good score is extremely hard. Grading scale is quite different and very unclear so it is hard to really know what your grade is. Online,it told me I was getting an A, but I got a C in the end. Take this class if you don't like exams, but stay away if you don't like writing analytical essays
Lazy, boring and way to long. He doesn't teach anything all he does is make the students read the book and makes them talk about it. You also have to write a paper about what you read but he sucks so bad a grading there is no way you can get an A.
This was my hardest class but also my best one. Lots of writing, but this is what helped me most.
Not what I expected the class is a lot about one trial in the past. But it was still ok class.
I had Mullins years ago for the American History survey and it was great. I teach H.S. now, and I use some of his stuff in my own classroom.
Hey, I got an awesome idea: how about writing 64 papers in 1 semester?! If you want to do so, take this class! IT SUCKED! the teacher is unclear about everything, reading these boring books is SO annoying and he grades all your papers so hard! Do NOT take this class EVER! This is a 100 level class! It should not be this hard!
LOts of writing and reading but a pretty good class. I took it cuz it was required but ended up liking it
If you want to write 64 papers in 1 semester sign up for this class. This was the most time consuming class I have ever had. long readings and a paper due every class period.
The worst class EVER! he doesnt teach and expects the world from you. if you have a job or play a sport or have a life at all you wont pass. He's a very strange guy (youll find out) and takes pictures of you on the first day.
Good class on African Americans. Where was all of this stuff in high school???
Pretty good class for gen ed
Harder than any of my other classes. Lots of writing, every week. Don't take it for an easy A.
Mullins is a great professor, even if a bit long-winded. I've never had this amount of reading or writing, but then again I'm a much better at writing and critically analyzing as a result. He grades like a normal professor, not like some of these half-wit SCSU professors do. He challenges students, so be prepared to work for your grade...for once.
I am coming back to school after several years away, and I still remember HIST 610. It was really hard, but it has really paid off. I am a teacher, and over the last several years I have used what I learned in the class very often. Tough but worth it!
A required class so that sucks, but for taking it not so bad.
Didnt think that I would like this class but it worked out pretty good. No final or tests but LOTS of small writings.
My favorite class this semester!
If you need this class for a general requirement, don't take this one. It was far to time consuming & wasted a lot of time that I could have focused on more important courses. Grading is way too hard for a 100 level, the reading is ridiculously excessive and the papers are very unclear & need to be done exactly his way or you will get a poor grade.
My favorite course that semester. I'm not a history major but I really liked this course and think everyone should learn more about race in this country.
A pretty good grad seminar. Lots of student conversation, which was good, but not really enough lecture from the professor.
I am just starting and I really like this class. Mullins really likes the topic and makes it fun. There is a paper every time but it's a short one.
I can't stand this guy. He's clear as osmium, his writing assignments are unintelligible. I can't stand his grading system. He has it set so F starts at 50%, claims it gives him more "real estate," and thinks that gives him the right to not give out a grade higher than 75%! I've checked the graphs, that's literally the highest score all semester!
This is a great class on the American REvolution! I knew a lot about it going in but knew a ton more by the end. Mullins has you discuss all the books and then write on them all but there is no final. Definitly take it if you like this part of history.
There is a lot of writing but you can read a lot of the lectures online so this helps a lot of the exam.
I am surprised to say this but this was my favorite class all semester. I really did not like it at first but have gotten a lot out of it. Medium reading but a lot of writing which is what I did not like but then found helpful.
Really friendly guy, made the class fun
I really enjoyed this professor even though the class was pretty hard
Really cool class. Lots of group work tho which I didnt like much.
This class started of kinda slow with a lot of lectures but it is gettnig pretty good now. I like the group stuff and the different things we do. I dont like the weird grading system and I'm not sure exactly where I stand.
Hardest class of my life. There was a TON of reading to do every night and an essay due every class time. 30 essays total. The final was impossible and he is a veryy hard grader. BEWARE!
This is my second class with Mullins and my favorite this semester. Lots of reading but the class is mainly discussion and lots of short writings. It actually feels like college!
A lot of work, so maybe don't take if you don't have to. But for me it was required and it was a pretty good experience.
10 short papers and a bunch of short multichoice quizes. Lots of class discussion so you have to like that. Pretty easy buy he makes you use the book all the time so you have to buy it.
Worse class i've ever taken. Material covered was good, but as a student reading and comprehending 200 pages of reading for each class, isn't practical on top of 4 other classes. Prof. sends out rude emails, about deadlines he set. Not a great experience.
Very heavy workload. I took a 400 level class with him a year ago and the workload is the same. Seems like he doesn't think that students have any other classes. Nice guy, interesting material, good teacher, just way too heave of a workload. If you can take the class with someone else
I do not exaggerate when I say that this guy is a joke. People may like that the grading is a little easier than other profs, but everyone in my class spent the time there talking about how much we didn't want to be there. Grading is heinous, lecture is useless, and I'm sorry, but he's just an annoying guy. Avoid at all cost.
One of the best courses for me at SCSU so far. I'm gong to become a teacher and I can't believe that they are only teaching me this stuff now. Where was all of this in high school???
Not my favorite class but not bad for getting a requirement done.
The only way to get a good grade on the two page papers that you are supposed to write is load them with commas and make them at least three pages long. Seems like a nice guy, but he asks too much for this level course. Has a huge homework load and quizzes are impossible.
WORSE PROFESSOR IVE EVER EVER HAD!TOO MANY PAPERS TO AND READINGD TO KEEP UP WITH OTHER CLASSES! IMPOSSIBLE GRADING SYSTEM!RUN FAST AND FAR!!!!
Do not take this class. Hist 140 is really 440 in disguise. The homework load is unbearable, and his grading system is some form of hieroglyphics. The activities in class are sporadic and disorganized. He speaks to the ceiling during his lectures, and is unhelpful. I can tell from the comments who is in my class, we ALL agree this dude is crazy.
I really liked this prof but I hate tests qnd he doesnt give them so that reqlly worked for me.
No tests, no papers. What more do you need to know. Just short quizes and and short writing each week. Sometimes boring but really easy.
This class totally made a difference for me. I graduated this year and thought I knew how to study and write but really could not. Mullins class kicked my a** in the course but met with me a better reader and writer. He met with me a bunch on the side and was a big help.
It is definitely a steady stream of work, since there is 100+ pages each week and online discusson and a short paper. But it really got me ready for my grad program and I learned a ton. Also there are no big papers and no exams t all. Keep up each week and you'll do fine.
Have to do 2 pg papers every week, 20 points each and the most I ever got out was 13. Multiple quizzes due every Tuesday, get to use the books and lectures. You find then answer and somehow it still ends up wrong. Quizzes based book and online lectures. Class sucks. Treats class like a much higher level class than it is. Grading system is weird.
Last part of this class is "blended" some lectures online. I didnt like that part otherwise the class is o.k.
I am PSEO and thought that this class would be a lot harder. Its pretty fun but could have more in it.
This was the best class I have had at SCSU. The Revolution looks totally different now and I don't know why this stuff isn't given to us in our regular education in HS. I totally recommend it.
I can't say that I really liked this class when I was taking it. It had a ton of reading and some writing every week and all of it was pretty tough. But now that I am in my PhD program I am glad that I took it since many of the pieces of it are starting to be really useful. Some more direction at the time would have been helpful though.
This class requires weekly readings from two textbooks, and a total of 100 pages at most. There are also "mini-essays" that are due usually once a week, and a 20 question quiz on most of the assigned chapters. While the class is not necessarily challenging, and there isn't a lot of homework, the homework that is assigned can take a while to do.
Some lecture buts lots of group work. I liked my group but others didn't and you have to stay in them. Easy overall but lots of online assignments.
A lot of work for a 100 level course, a lot of silly group work, and he grades with checks and minuses which makes no sense at all.
The 3rd class of the semester the guy I was sitting by dropped the class on his phone and walked out. This class is not worth it- even with no final. Gradewise I did fine, but his lectures are boring. Getting a good paper (which you write every week) is impossible, and weekly quizzes are hard too. I asked a question and he sassed me. DO NOT TAKE.
the work load is enormous. Between the weekly quizzes, the weekly paper, the weekly group assignment, and the two chapters from 2 different books you are required to read each week it is very hard to not get burnt out in this class. It is very easy to get a good grade, if you treat it like its your only class that is. But he is a great professor.
This class was very hard! Do not take it! He makes you read a ton and take quizzes on what you read. The quizzes are very difficult and specific. You also have to write essays every week which are impossible to do well on. He is a very strict grader and he grades with checks and minuses which was confusing. He also has you do pointless group work!
I took this as a high schooler and thought it was not super hard, just a little harder than my other classes. Having no final was cool and I liked group work.
He is sometimes overtly rude and is an extremely tough grader
Definetly tough for a 100 level history class. Weekly readings from 2 textbooks. Around 30 pages each with a 20 question quiz, the other varies from 20-40 pages with a 3-4 page argument paper each week. Group work goes along with the papers where you present findings to class. I personally liked him even though many didnt.
His quizzes are timed & very specific to the readings. The grades I've gotten in this class are the worst I've ever received in college. Don't take his class unless you have a photographic memory because the quizzes are twice a week on sections 30-40 pages of detailed arguments & documents and you get 20 minutes to answer 10-20 questions & essay.
You don't learn anything. This is a self taught class. You have to read 2 chapters a week, taking a quiz on one and writing an outline for the other. Beware! The quizzes are timed and the questions are extremely difficult. You really have to understand the chapter before you attempt the quizzes. You don't get the correct answers back either.
Class discussion, 20p readings, short (1p) writings. Pretty good, tiny class size made it fun.
If this is your only class, you should do fine, but for everyone else - 10 papers and 24 online timed exams for which you don't have enough time to complete well. No final, thank God. Lectures are worthless. 30 minutes to prep for group work. Professor doesn't listen to any concerns or challenges you have to course material. AVOID this class.
A little confusing at first cause there are four different kinds of assignments. Not bad once you get used to it. No tests so thats nice. Lots of group stuff so maybe don't take if you don't like that.
My toughest class but my best class. Not an easy A for sure. There is something due every week. Class is mainly discussion which is great but you have to be ready.
Definitely not a hard class but you have something to do almost every class. I liked this but not everyone did.
worst class experience.
Class discussion is half the grade so if you do the reading and talk in class you will do fine. Just two books but lots of short quizzes but not final.
This was my favorite class at SCSU. I had him for 140 too but I thought that this was much better. Its a discussion class so you have to like to talk.
This class was the hardest class I have ever taken. Mullins doesnt teach you anything. On mondays you do a debate with the class, which he isnt involved in and on Wednesday you do group work. You also have papers and quizzes due almost every week. The papers are so confusing and he doesnt help to explain them. Do not take this class.
I took an INTRODUCTION history class, easily one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. The amount of reading he makes you do each week is insane, and the quizzes are SO hard to pass, after doing the readings, my average test scores were 4/10 for the semester. Makes you do pointless debates and skits. Any paper you write isn't good enough.
You'll enter this class thinking it'll be it easy, especially since theres no tests during the term and no final. But he'll get you with the papers and quizzes. You'll be reading anywhere from seventeen to forty pages in one textbook and around thirty in the other, with a paper with strict guidelines and a rather tough group assignment each week.
I was not looking forward to this class it was required. But it actually was interesting and I learned a lot. Like others said no exams or papers but lots of short stuff.
He likes to keep you busy but its all pretty easy. Each week has a 10 question quiz but you get to use the book. Every couple of weeks there is a short reaction paper. You have to talk a lot in class but he gives out lots of points for this. If you come to class and talk you'll be good.
Pretty basic class. Bunch of small things due during the term but no final. LOTS of weight on participation so make sure to talk in the class discussions.
He doesn't get involved with the class. The class is mostly just group work. Theres an essay due every week that he does a poor job explaining criteria. Those essays are also heavily graded.
I liked how he made us actually talk to each other and talk about the book. He lectures some but really makes us talk and think. Really different from my other classes.
Lots of groupwork that is ok but gets to be a lot.
He does not teach a single thing. The class is based on the students trying to teach each other readings that are extremely long. He gives out an extreme amount of homework, and he is a hard grader. HIGHLY recommend not taking this class.
Very repetitive classes, if you dont talk in class you will not get a good grade. No final or tests just quizzes
Small class, lots of discussion. No papers, but 5 or 6 paragraphs to write every week.
He's not a bad person, but you have two quizzes every week, read a lot, not lenient with the work, & you have a lot of homework in this class. You will have to work your butt off to succeed in this class.
The readings can be hard but we always have time to talk about them in class. I like getting to have so much discussion. There is writing every week so don't take this if you don't like writing.
I can't take it anymore. This class killed my spirit and desire to learn. The readings are 80 pages a week and they don't make any sense. Mind you, I'm a strong reader, and usually never struggle- but this is too much. You have to write a summary of each reading, and he grades them on accuracy- NOT effort. Your best isn't good enough. Run.
Its a online class and so I didn't think I would like it but it works out. Its mostly discussion and I like hearing what the other kids have to say. He gives lots of points for talking so make sure that you do that. He has a weird grading scale but it works out.
I took this class three years ago to meet my general education requirements. He was NOT accommodating and discriminative toward deaf students. He was asked to put me in a same group with a deaf student for the sake of ASL interpreters. He sought ANOTHER school's disability office and said he didn't have to. I ended up having to withdraw this class.
The class is all online and he says its the first time hes done it hat way. It is always class discussion so that is better than always lecture, but having more variety would be nice. But the disucssions are good and he gets a lot of people to talk.
Professor Mullins is not what I consider to be a good professor. Inflexible deadlines and never responds to emails on time, if at all. A lot of reading (sometimes 80+ pages a week). Learn to skim, and enjoy it. Had a deadline for work two hours before class just because. Interesting material, but he'd be a much better professor if he cared more.
If you like to talk its a easy class. One chapter a class and write a paragraph on it. Almost half the grade is on participation and he only lectures at the very end of each class. I like it but it could be hard if you hate talking.
Dr. Mullins is not a good professor and I suggest waiting for Dr. O'Brien, Harvey, Eden, Jaede, or Harvey to teach the classes before taking Mullins. His assignment explanations are extremely vague and you will never get feedback, not even when it comes to the work that you'll start on your senior thesis.
A good course on teh revolution, and also the years after it showing how it played out. Lots of reading, lots of tiny writings, but no exams or things like that.
Pretty easy class. Some reading every day, then write a paragraph on it. Talk a lot in class since this counts a lot.
Really interesting readings and discussion class. If you love talking about history its good but maybe a little harder if you don't like to talk.
This Prof. Is Honestly horrible, grading doesnt go by syllabus most of the time. Very random. If you miss one assignment, youre not getting anything higher than a B+. SOOO much reading and half the time the seminars derail from the reading so theres that. If you dont have to take him, DONT.
Covid turned this class into all online but it went way better than I expected. Mainly class discussion with some lecture so you really have to do the reading. He needs some more variety maybe, but it really made me focus on the reading.
Very light readings (15 pages) but lots of group projects. Talking in class helps a lot so make sure to do that. Do the readings and come to class and you will ace the class.
This is the majors and minors class so has lots of focus on method and sources. It took a minute to figure out some of the stuff, but now it is really helping. Love it that we get to have a conversation about our own stuff too.
Just avoid him
If you like the Revolution and you like to talk a lot this is a good class. Participation matters a lot. The other stuff is just short writings.
Insane amount of reading. Like 100 pages a week; between several different readings along with having to write multiple précis for each reading.
Pretty much all discussion with a lecture at the end each time. Medium-heavy reading amounts but no big tests. Had this on zoom and it would be better in person.
Very easy to pass, hard to get an A
Took this during covid. He was my only teacher who actually held discussions in the online classes.
Would not recommend. He does not give you any feedback when you ask him MULTIPLE times for it.If you make an appointment to get help he will say its not fair to the other students if he helps you. He only gives you a grade at midterm and your final grade. If you ask how your doing in-between he wont tell you because its not fair for other students.
Pretty intense course. Hard topics and sometimes hard readings, but all super interesting. Really helps if you like to talk since that counts for a lot.
Why didn't we learn about any of this in high school? The class covers mainly African-American history, and there is so much new stuff. It only uses two books but there is a lot in them. Mainly a discussion class but also some group work and a small lecture most days.
I missed quite a few classes due to a disability, which I emailed him about and he only responded to two. Becuase I had missed work I asked if I'd be able to submit the work late as his syllabus stated that with a valid reason you could. He told me it didn't matter and I had to drop or fail. He also graded work weeks late.
Pretty good class that was all about Frankenstein and science. Learned a lot of stuff about what led up to Frankenstein novel and what happened with it afterward. Mainly class discussion with some short lectures.
I took this as a PSEO elective, and it was pretty easy and also interesting. Its mainly about African Americans with a lot of stuff that they never taught us in school. He counts participation a lot, which was great for me, but maybe not great if you don't like to talk at all.
Its mainly a talking class but he does give small lectures each time. The things to read are short but sometimes hard to understand. The homework is hard but the class time is pretty fun.
Decent class with a medium amount of reading and small writing each week. You really have to talk in class if you want a good grade.
Mullins was very uncommunicative throughout the semester giving my bad grades on my daily work with no feedback behind the grade. Mullins took long periods to grade assignments, some he never graded anyway. I would not recommend taking any classes with him as he has been an overall terrible professor.
Mullins is a mere chaperone that teaches you nothing, in HIST140 he assigns you to not read about historical facts but instead assigns you to read historians giving their opinion on things that happened. When you go to his classroom, its one giant circle discussion, where he sits and writes down things on the side never teaching or lecturing at all
I took this when everything was online so it might be different now. Mullins was the only online class I had that had people talking to each other a lot instead of just recorded lectures or just doing busy work on your own. Sometimes the discussion could be a little slow but most it was pretty good and kept your attention going.
This class was harder than I expected but I also got a higher grade then I thought i would. He pushed us to do a lot but it was also pretty interesting and sometimes fun.
Each class is an open discussion between everyone upon the prècises you are required to write about a chapter in the textbook. There is no feedback given on the assignments and is hard to improve based on his liking. Even with attendance, if you do not speak in class or "look attentive" you will be docked points. It is hard to please him.
Not too bad a class. Reading twice a week and you have to write a paragraph on it each time. If you want to do well you have to talk at least some in class each time.
Mullins engages students with interactive discussions, even in online classes. The course covers underrepresented African-American history, though the workload can be heavy. Leveraging tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
Great professor with interesting teaching and content. There are no tests, just 40-minute discussions every class and a short essay due before class starts. It takes effort, but if you do the work, an A is pretty much guaranteed.
The class was very discussion based, for an A in participation each day you would need to talk 8 times (which is difficult with a larger class size) and participation is 50% of your grade and the other 50% is writings which he doesn't grade very fast nor explain the guidelines very well. His grading system was very unnecessary and confusing as well
He is a terrible grader and when I asked what i could do to improve my B/C grades he said I need to stop worrying because those are the grades he gives everyone. Sits there the whole class while we have a classwide discussion about what we read and he would note if you talked and if you didn't you wouldn't get full participation points.
The class is all about African Americans so you have to like that but I do so it was good. You have discussion most of each class but then he lectures at the end. Keep up with the readings and do the short writings and you will be good.
Pretty good overall. I got a better grade than I expected, since psrticipating in class counts for almost as much as the assignments. Too many short writings but thats better than have huge exams.
50% of grade is in class participation, and in a class with 40 kids getting words in proves very difficult. the other 50% is on a group of writings that were graded extremely tough. These writings require around 40 pages of reading and must be completed before every class. He very rarely answers questions and will refer to the syllabus if asked.
Don't take if you have a full schedule since he has lots of assignments but worth taking if you want to learn lots of new things. He offers lots of 1-on-1 meetings and those really help. My hardest class this term but my best one.
