I really liked this class. I had to take it for my minor in humanities (so I obviously already had an interest in the subject) and we covered some pretty interesting topics. The lectures are long, but they're usually participatory so it doesn't really feel long at all. We also watched two movies, which is always nice.
Professor Nall is an excellent professor and I would recommend taking his courses. He is understanding and gives many extra credit opportunities. There is a lot of writing, but it isn't hard. He is funny and we were able to watch interesting films during his course.
Only tests are the midterm and final. Not many grades, extra credit opportunities, need to participate at least twice, the whole class is lectures from powerpoints, and there are assigned nightly journals from readings or in-class topics.
Although perfect attendance is not mandatory, his lectures are worth going to, they are extremely inspirational and will really make you think. His class isn't necessarily difficult and he isn't the type of professor to do pop quizzes. There's only 4 grades for the semester but if you try you will do well in this course. Would take again :)
Very good prof! Makes the class entertaining even though the course itself is not! If you study the guides he gives you before an exam/ pay attention in class half the time (this is not a bad thing, this means the information needed to pass is all there), then you'll do fine in this class! Make sure to do your journals and essay on time.
DO NOT MISS CLASS!! In-class participation is a huge part of your grade. I only missed a few days and didn't perfectly keep up with the out of class assignments and I was totally lost. The professor is very interesting and helpful but if you don't go to class and do everything he says when he says it, it is very hard to pass with a good grade.
The lectures are long but interesting.
Great professor and a very easy class. Just keep up with the journals and try to show up to class. There's only a midterm and a final but they're pretty easy and one group project which is also easy. The topics discussed were very interesting and so was the professor.
Dr. Nall is not only a great professor but a very down to earth human being. Lectures are interesting and he does a great job of creating a comfortable atmosphere not only for students to participate but continue to do so. He doesn't kill you with classwork or homework the only thing he requires you to do is think. I would definitely recommend him
gives good lectures
Dr. Nall is a hilarious and incredibly smart teacher. His lectures, while long, are totally understandable and easy to follow. He always asks for student input and bases his lectures off of what students are saying. He is very respectful and friendly. There is a fair amount of reading and a bit of writing most classes, both in and out. Great class.
His lectures are really entertaining. The only homework is the journal, one group project which is super easy, and the 2 tests aren't too difficult as long as you review his powerpoints and the readings. Some of the books are necessary. He takes attendance pretty much every class period. I loved this class, he is really chill and funny. Take it!
Class consists of professor Nall giving PowerPoint lectures and sometimes class discussions. He usually posts all the PowerPoint notes online and gives study guides for the midterm and final which is very helpful since the only grades going in are the midterm, final, a 5-page paper, reading journals, and attendance.
Most of the class was just him reading quotes to us. Only four major assignments determine your whole grade. Get to watch some films. Never e-mailed me back, and wasn't at his office hours. Can be funny sometimes.
Good availability outside of class A lot of reading involved
The lectures can be interesting! The books you read are pretty boring but very essential to pass the class. I would have rather of had a total list of Journal assignments because if you miss class you are screwed if there was a Journal and for people like me who had professors with office hours during this class are punished for getting help
I can honestly say this way the most interesting class I've ever taken. Not only did this class make me think about the humanities as a whole, but Nall was great at getting you to really think about particular concerns of society. Quick, witty, sarcastic, and tendency to NOT randomly call on people--I'd say he's the best professor I've ever had.
Loved the reading material in the class. He was very clear with his lectures as well and is willing to help whenever you need it. If you take this course with him, make sure to sign the attendance sheet (I forgot a few times)
Professor Nall is one the most interesting teachers I have had. His lectures are very interesting and have tons of information, but he helps explain what will mainly be on the the test. He does keep track of participation, but you only have to two times out of the plethora of classes you have the semester. Overall, a very easy going guy.
He's really cool and makes the lectures interesting; always willing to help you with any questions you have; he does take attendance most of the time so it's important to go to class; there's a midterm and a final and also a group project; throughout the semester you write journal entries relating to the topic being discussed
Great Teacher
This was very interesting class. You will need a book and homework is just assigned readings and writing a reflection which is due at the end of the semester. The only test you have is a mid-term and a final and he gives very detailed study guides. Attendance is important because he gives extra points if you haven't missed more than one class
He grades attendance so if you don't show up it may affect your grade, but he does give extra credit opportunities that may help balance that out. He puts all his powerpoint online to easily study from.
Super enthusiastic about everything, HILARIOUS, and extremely engaging with the class. Don't be afraid to give your input, you'll want to!!
Keep track of the journal entries he assigns otherwise you will be stressed at the end of the semester trying to complete them all............ like me right now.
Absolutely amazing professor. He's entertaining, helpful, and overall just a very good professor. Quite possibly the best I've ever had. I highly and I mean HIGHLY recommend him.
There are only 4 assignments throughout the semester, which may be good or bad for you. Midterm, Applied Ethics Paper, Final, Journal Portfolio. Each worth 25% of your grade. He does offer extra credit for attending guest philosophy speakers once or twice in the semester. Funny, Enjoyable, Engages in conversation with students, overall excellent.
Amazing professor, I had him for both Philosophy & Humanities and I honestly never mind going to either one due to the great learning atmosphere and lectures. Professor Nall interacts a lot with his students via in class debates. No real problems in this course, just show up do the work and you'll be set.
His lectures are very conversational and interesting. The best part of the class is how much it makes you think about your current views on controversial topics. If you study the info on the study guides and listen to the lectures theres no way you cant pass with an a A. Barely any memorization just understanding of the concepts. 10/10 recommend
I'd highly recommend showing up to class in case of in-class journals.
Very interesting class. Kind of a bit of reading for articles for journals. Does have an attendance grade. A couple extra credit opportunities. Overall not the worst class I've ever taken.
It is a very laid back class. Journals are assigned every day for a total of about 50 journals to turn in for a test grade at the end of the semester. You really don't know what is going to be on the tests when you go take them. He offers a couple of extra credit opportunities that I completely recommend going to! They saved my grade, I think.
Professor Nall was a great professor overall. Very understanding and open minded. Super easy A if you just show up to class and keep up with journals. However, if you're uncomfortable talking openly about ALL religions and points of view, this class may not be for you.
There are four grades: midterm, journals, ethics paper, and final. But the final and midterm are word for word from his study guide. The ethics paper is very clear cut explanation, take your time doing it. The journals can be tedious since there are so many but easy boost to your grade. Nall was an interesting, nice professor.
This was my first professor to have in college and I wouldn't change it if i could, this was a great learning experience that provided complex issues to contemplate everyday.
Good professor, just be prepared to work hard and pay attention to the lectures. Also, attend class is a must.
Absolutely great teacher. Don't be afraid to give your opinion in class, Professor Nall likes to expand upon the students views. He's a really funny professor, so the lectures are really interesting. The class is an easy A, just don't slack off on the readings for the journal and he gives you study guides for the test. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Nall is by far my favorite professor! His lectures are amazing and are made more relatable with his sarcasm and humor. He is extremely down to earth, cares about all of his students genuinely has a passion for the liberal arts and teaching.
Loved this class. Must attend lectures because of in class journals. Class consist of Journals, Midterm, Final, and a Group Project. Gives study guide for both test, and journals are easy if you pay attention to what's going on in class. Highly recommend and would take him again.
Really interesting lectures plus you can share your opinions. Easy class as long as you don't procrastinate on the journals you will regret doing that.
If graphic (violent, sexual) things bother you, do not take this class. Everything under those contexts was tasteful and did contribute to the course, but I was very unprepared for the magnitude. You can pass without doing the reading (there's a lot) so long as you participate in discussions and pay attention to power points, but it'll be harder.
If you keep on top of the work he assigns, you'll fly by. The paper at the end of the term is slightly ambiguous, but it's a great reflection of what you have learned in the class.
Took this for gen ed. The lectures are actually really intriguing and makes you think a bit. Professor Nall has a sense of humor so it doesn't really get boring. Overall it's a good class.
I loved this professor. He is really funny and nice and loves hearing other peoples opinions. He is really cute as well.
Great professor. You definitely need the book and to put some effort into the class, however it is far from impossible.
Lectures are entertaining. Workload is small and poignant. Attendance helps.
He's an awesome professor and makes this generally boring topic interesting to the student. If you have a question he does his best to provide a helpful answer. He jokes around too and it makes the class more comfortable. I recommend this class with this professor if you need to get one of those lame credits out of the way. Easy A if you study.
Dr. Nall is a very down-to-earth man, and elaborates on the material in a crystal-clear, comical manner that will get any student thinking. He let's you be who you want to be in the class. If you want to engage thoroughly in the material, you can do that, or if you just want to get a grade and get out of there, you can also do that.
He was an amazing professor and made philosophy interesting and entertaining
Professor Nall is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He makes the lectures enjoyable with his sense of humor to many different subjects. The class is an easy A as long as you attend the lectures and keep up with your journals. Highly recommend taking
Dr. Nall is arguably the best professor I've ever had (not just in college). I have yet to meet another professor who is as passionate and engaging as he is. Here is a professor who not only looks to see his students succeed within the classroom, but outside as well. There is a genuine sense of involvement, something seldom seen in professors.
Textbook is hardly needed. Tests are straight from study guide he gives. Very entertaining professor. Easy A
Fantastic professor.
Professor Nall is very intelligent and is passionate about his class. Not too much work assigned which can be a good and bad thing. He has a sense of humor and is a charismatic person overall, I definitely recommend to take his class. He has impacted me for the better.
Dr. Nall is very humorous and keeps the class entertaining. The tests are fair, and students clearly understand what is expected of them. He is by far one of my best professors this semester. He is the best professor at UCF for this course. He allows a dialogue in huge lecture halls but participation isn't required. He does take attendance.
4 grades the entire semester, very enthusiastic on philosophy, overall a very good professor.
Provides really interesting takes on philosophical concepts and he's pretty funny.
He really knows his stuff and allows a lot of student participation in class. Tests are easy if you study the slides, and if you do journals as they come that's also pretty easy. He's a funny lecturer and makes the class interesting without pushing a particular worldview. Stretches your understanding of things; definitely take Nall.
Make sure to keep up with the journals. Don't leave it to the end.
3 Lectures a week recorded attendance, stay on top of journals, one group project, a midterm and a final. This class is a very clear and open intro to philosophy class.
Tended to stray off topic sometimes into his own political views (happened only about every other class), but was willing to hear others and their views; cool with people who disagree. I would say the only minus was that and we used the textbook, but not much. Oh yeah, STUDY THE STUDY GUIDE MATERIAL!
Overall, class lecture was pretty great and the rubric was very strict forward.
Really easy class. There is a Semester long Journal assignment, turned in at the end. If you procrastinate like I did, you will spend an entire weekend doing it. He talks for the entire lecture, and gets students involved in the discussion. I found the class very easy and interesting. Two tests, midterm and final. Study and you'll pass.
Great instructor, he really cares about his students, doesn't make you feel like just a statistic like many other classes.
He's a very good professor and he's very willing to help his students out. He takes attendance, but he is very lenient with it. There is a lot of reading but his notes and power points give more than enough information to pass the tests.
Not a regular, dry philosophy professor. He will teach you philosophy in a way that is relevant to life. Lectures are interesting and he's funny. Super easy to get an A as long as you come to class most days and do the assignments.
I love Dr. Nall's sense of humor, and the purpose of the class. However, he is very opinionated. Attendance is mandatory, but there isn't much coursework besides a reflection paper and keeping up with short journal assignments. I felt as if I couldn't share my true thoughts in my writings while enrolled in this course.
Show up to class, study, do the readings and the journals and easy pass.
Two exams, midterm and final. Totally based on the study guide he provides before the exams and exams are clear. Only other grades are attendance (uses TopHat so you can get the code from friends that go to class), 1 group project, and out of class reflection journals (must sound insightful). Easy class just put in SOME effort in the least.
Nall is a great Philosophy prof. and I would happily take his class again. Fairly easy and straightforward, just be aware of procrastination. His homework assignments are due as one "journal" at the end of the semester. So if you do not do them weekly, you could end up with a lot of typing and reading at the end.
I took this class during summer term A. Big mistake. The class is amazing. The professor is really interested in making you think. The mistake is because there is so much content to read that you're not given enough time to really let the information seep in. This course has changed the way I think. I wish I was given more time for it to happen.
I took this class over a summer term and it is an easy A. He post a lot of stuff to read and videos to watch but I just skimmed most of it. Just do all of the assignments and it is an easy A.
Dr. Nall is a fantastic Humanities professor. His lectures are interesting and the course materials are genuinely enjoyable to read and watch. He is always very quick to answer questions and grade assignments, and is very fair, bordering on being overly easy, with grades. This is a very enjoyable and doable summer course.
I never used the textbook. If you did a decent amount of studying and looked at his study guide, you will pass with an A. It is a pretty straightforward and easy class. You do have a big journal project so just make sure the keep up with that.
Dr. Nall is a wonderful professor! He is an expert in his field but his class can be demanding and definitely a ton of reading. Thankfully all the topics are very interesting and engaging. I made the mistake to take him in Summer A and the class really just flew by in which it made it very difficult to keep up.
Professor Nall is to date the best professor I have ever had. I took him my first summer at UCF for humanities and then again the following spring. His lectures are inspiring, thought provoking, and humorous. His class is graded on 3 exams and a project. His exams are based on lecture material but you'll want to attend his lectures anyways!
Do yourself a favor and take this! He is an extremely intelligent man and his lectures will really engage you and make you more aware of how the world works. He offers a lot of extra credit (as if you needed it). All assigned readings can be found on google or @library. Only 1term paper and some journals throughout, midterm&final easy. Easy A!
You will be left wondering how your standing is in the class is until a week after the semester ends. Two exams which is extremely difficult, and two moderately easy papers, with one of them being a collection of journals throughout the class. Very vague and unclear class. Allocate enough time and you should get an A, that is, if you do the EC (8%)
Cool guy but not the best professor. Very lecture-heavy and is unorganized/hard to follow. Only 2 exams, both were decently easy just as long as you do the study guide. Other 2 assignments are papers which are long but follow the rubric. Felt as though we weren't learning humanities, rather we were learning philosophy. Take a diff professor
Dr. Nall's class was a great learning experience as it touched on many ideas you may have already thought about, but it also pushed you to think about them more critically. He is very respectful when it comes to discussing different opinions on controversial ideas, and this allows for a very welcoming class environment where dialogue is encouraged.
Dr. Nall is a well-spoken guy who cares about his students. His lectures are interesting and will make you want to listen and even analyze your own thinking. Overall I think we all learned a lot this semester. 2 tests, 1 term paper, and an assignment with numerous journal entries you do throughout the semester. Gives a good amount of extra credit.
I liked Professor Nall because he is into open classroom discussions (which you receive extra credit for speaking) but, we only were graded on 5 assignments. I didn't use the textbook but I used the other (5) assigned books that we had to read (MUST READ THEM). He grades tough on the term paper, journals are easy (if you keep up). PAY ATTENTION
All you have to do is attended and keep up with the readings. His tests are easy and he gives extra credit.
I found his lectures interesting however the class discussions didn't seem to match the material on the exams. There were only two exams ( a midterm and a final), the journal assignments, and the paper. The paper was graded really harshly especially since we got little to no instruction on what was expected. I would choose a different professor
Professor Nall is extremely well spoken and caring. His lectures are interesting and most of class time is dedicated to discussion/debate. The only grades for the class are the midterm, final, a term paper, and class journals. A lot of writing (because of the journals) and the term paper is graded quite harshly. Extra credit for participation.
Professor Nall is a great professor. I had him for Humanistic Traditions I, and it was slow at first but it really picked up speed. If that class is any indication, Dr. Nall really cares about his students and is open-minded as well as discussion oriented. There is a lot of reading, but if you skim through them, it should be fine.
Lots of opportunities for extra credit. Only like 5 grades (Midterm, Final, A journal project, 1 Paper) so super easy on a weekly basis. Reading is not super mandatory, just read ppts, interesting and always related to everyday life. You can tell he cares about you as a person and he facilitated discussions really well. Totally recommend!
Lectures do NOT matter, not one thing we talk about in class is on the (only 2, final and midterm) exams. The only reason to go to class is to sign the attendance sheet. There are some interesting discussions but again, nothing pertaining to the exams. Easy A-B, just do the study guide for the tests and do the 1 term paper
Dr. Nall is humble, courteous, and an incredible professor! If you're taking HUM2020, don't hesitate to take him. Incredible person, class consists of discussions, infrequent in-class reflections, and a few slides here and there. Read and you'll pass no problem.
Dr. Nall makes the class interesting but its even better if you are in a class with alot of participation. Doesn't let class out 1 min early. Class is very heavy on Philosphy. Aside from that pretty good class, midterm, final, one paper and a journal. Easy peasy, do the readings for the journal, participate in class and study for the 2 tests.
Best professor Ive ever had at UCF. Really cares about his students and is clearly very passionate about the material he teaches. Very inspirational and loved going to this class.
He's very understanding and very insightful. Those require some reading(you can skim through the books and still write a good paper) but nothing too crazy. Plus a study guide is given for the midterm and final.
There were only a handful of assignments so you need to do them all. There are a ton of readings and many required a written reflection so be ready to write. The tests were nothing to sweat about he gave us a great study guide. Showing up and participating can earn you extra credit.
Unique experience. Nall is one in a million. Highly recommended Hugely engaging lectures. Nall is passionate about open classroom discussion Excellent study guides plenty of assigned reading, though not really required Lots of 1 paragraph reflections (homework). Can overwhelm if not kept up with Term essays graded with high expectations
Dr. Nall truly cares about his students. He knows how to keep students engaged in the lecture and is very funny. Grades are comprised of journal entries throughout the semester that are submitted as a midterm journal and final journal. There is also a Term paper, a midterm, and a final. Great professor and would definitely take him again
JEFFREY NALL IS THE REAL HOMIE. FIRST OFF, HES HOT. HE GIVES EXTRA CREDIT FOR SHOWING UP TO CLASS. ONLY BAD PART OF THIS CLASS WAS THAT YOUR GRADE IS ONLY BASED OFF OF 4 THINGS... WE HAVE LIKE NO HOMEWORK, BUT WE HAVE 2 TESTS, A TERM PAPER, AND A JOURNAL. YOU ALSO GET 2% ADDED TO YOUR FINAL GRADE IF YOU TALK IN CLASS.
Only 4 things determine your grade. Not a lot of work at all, but the assignments you do, make sure to do well. Hes really hot and funny and nice though. He offers quite a bit of extra credit. I would take another class with him.
Hands down the best professor I've ever had. REALLY cares about his students. I was going through a lot the semester I had his class and he was extremely helpful and empathetic to my situation. He WANTS his students to succeed. His class was so fun, I wish I could take another class with him!!! Attendance isn't mandatory, but gets you extra credit.
Nall is a cool guy, when he lectures he really can make you think. What's a bit scary about his class is how it's graded off of only 4 things: each making up 25% of your grade. There's a bit of extra credit offered, however, which is nice. Do not cram and do not mess up any of the assignments.
Professor Nall is extremely caring and cares about you as an individual. Also his lectures are interesting and talking in class can get you extra credit. I recommend going to class bc most of what he discusses is on the midterm. Also use quizlet to study. However, there are only few grades. Great professor but make sure to put in the effort!
There are 4 grades all worth 25% of your grade. Midterm, final, ethics paper, and journals. You must attend class and he's super boring. Never answers emails. Would not suggest.
Professor Nall is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are always very interesting, some even life-changing. All you have to do is show up and do the readings he assigns. The workload is not too much, only 4 assignments determine your grade. These assignments aren't hard at all, you just have to put in the time. 10/10
Dr nall is a very wise person. I loved his lectures, but he drags concepts way too much. I swear we were on the topic of female divinity for like 2 weeks! Also, this class is hard to study for because the concepts are a little hard to grasp. It does involve a lot of critical thinking. total grade is based off 4 things which is extremely hard :(
He's passionate about what he does so the lectures are very interesting but sometimes they seemed to drag on unnecessarily. Your grade is only based off of your midterm, final, term paper, and final journal compilation. He gives you extra credit for attendance and participation. If you have a pulse, you'll pass.
Dr. Nall was the BEST professor I've ever had. Only 4 grades in the class: midterm, term paper, journals, final. His lectures are amazing and he really has changed my perspective on the humanities and has made me critically think about my beliefs. He knows what he's talking about and really cares about his students. Take him!!!
He's passionate about philosophy, likes class participation, and has only 4 assignments for the entire semester, which are all weighted equally. He changed alot of people's perspective about the world.
I thoroughly enjoyed sitting through Dr. Nalls lectures. He presents philosophical ideas in a very accessible way and always answers any questions one might have. My only criticisms are his tendency to get a bit more political than I prefer in an intro philosophy class, as well as the discussion-based classroom, as I prefer to listen to a lecture.
Had Professor Nall for my first semester at UCF and I thoroughly enjoyed it; the class is easy enough to be able to truly spend time engaging the material and the lectures were facilitated with open and inclusive discussions amongst the class that really made the time worth it! Thougu there are only 4 assignments all semester, none are too hard.
Very knowledgeable in his field and very open minded. Theres only 4 assignments the whole semester. Attendance is not mandatory but you do get extra credit for good attendance. But honestly if you dont show up, youre missing out on a lot. His lectures are very inspiring. He teaches you how to think for yourself and develop your own ideas.
There are only four grades for the semester, but Dr. Nall does extra credit based off of participation and attendance, so I HIGHLY suggest going to class. Also, try to make friends with someone because he does not go over assignments thoroughly and is hard to reach. The class isn't too hard and I loved the lectures because they made me think!
Nall is a cool guy but his lectures tend to go on tangents, he rants a lot. only graded on 4 things (midterm, final, journal project, and term paper) if you can listen to his tangents then hes probably a good choice for you
Professor Nall is a great professor! He'll definitely challenge your thinking and your viewpoints. The hardest part about the class is keeping up with the journals but you have all semester to complete them. I'm also selling the textbooks that you'll need so if you're interested dm my insta: MayraGossett. (only for textbooks dont hmu otherwise thx)
Prof. Nall is a great prof. His classes were never boring. Beware of kinda controversial topics such as religion, abortion, and other moral issues tho. His class consisted of a journal (with in-class and out-of-class entries so try not to skip any of his classes), a paper, and the multiple-choice midterm and exam.
Nall is a tricky professor to pick, he only has a few assignments which can make or break your grade, there is homework weekly so you have to stay on top of it to make sure you don't hurt your grade. He is a harsh grader on the paper but he does give extra credit opportunities which thankfully brought me to an A. His final is very much like the mid
This class requires so much effort. Your grade is made up of only 4 things: a midterm, a term paper, journal entries, and the final (all done in that order). You could get away with not showing up to class as he doesn't take attendance too often, but that really made the tests more difficult. Keep up with the reading and journals, or you'll suffer.
I wish there were more people like him in the education system. He is passionate about the humanities and inspires you to look at yourself/life in different perspectives. If you dont normally rely on the professor, at least take the subject seriously because understanding the material will help you with the journals, exams, and the term paper.
Great guy who is very inspirational and passionate about the humanities. He is very honest and open to feedback and criticism. Only thing is the class is graded on 4 assignments including the midterm and final so its make or break it.
Dr Nall is really passionate about humanities. And honestly makes you question a hunch of things. The class is great. Only grades 4 things (midterm, final paper, journal project, and final). If you keep up with the journals youll do fine on the tests. He also offers extra credit which does help in the end. All in all, awesome professor, great clas
A lot of assigned readings, but they help on tests and journal entries! Come to every class, crucial to course success. Read all assigned readings, and write journals the day they are assigned, or youll get behind. Pay attention. He is really engaging and humorous. Youll have fun in this class.
Professor Nall is an amazing professor. You will definetely see yourself learning about things you wouldn't typically learn in a classroom environment. His class is as difficult as you make it. The courses is composed of 4 25% grades. I highly recommend doing the study guides with time and clarifying any uncertainities you might have. Dont skip.
Basically a discussion hour; Dr. Nall is extremely passionate about what he's teaching so most of the time you'll end up just listening to him talk. If you contribute in class he offers ec! The class is straight forward & simple, grades are 25% each for final, midterm, paper & journals. Very compassionate teacher, just engage/try & you'll get an A.
Dr. Nall is a pretty great professor. He only grades the class on four things, a journal, a paper, a midterm, and the final. If you miss classes a lot (like I did lol) make sure you find someone who goes to all classes for the journal articles. Overall pretty easy A!
His philosophy discussion lectures are incredibly motivating and actively hilarious. At times, they can even feel like stand-up comedy shows. Once-in-a-lifetime professor for any curious mind. I would recommend everyone take his class at least once in their life. (Tip: learn the study guide for the midterm and final and they will be a breeze)
This class is VERY lecture based, almost sounding like he is preaching to the students. Very few grades for this class: a journal, a project, a midterm, and the final is basically it. Journal is very long and consists of many entries, do not procrastinate on this. If you are interactive and engage with his lectures you can receive extra credit.
There are only four grades- a term paper, a semester-long journal project (1 per class period), your midterm, and final. He does give a lot of extra credit opportunities, but he doesn't prepare you well enough for the tests. Attendance is mandatory but you can miss a few days and not be penalized.
I find his lectures boring as hell, but many don't. So, if you enjoy thinking about life with someone who's ready to spoon feed you ideas, then this would be a good class for you. The tests aren't hard at all. I took the midterm without knowing there was going to be one and got a 94%. Just go, do your homework assignments, and do well on the essay
You are graded by 2 projects, the midterm, and the final. One project is a semester long compilation of "journal entries" that you submit all at once. Attendance is also tracked through an app. Overall, very respected professor who is obviously very knowledgable and well-versed. Your grade will reflect the effort you put into the class. 10/10.
Graded on a group project, midterm, journal entry project which is a compilation of readings throughout the whole course (do not procrastinate this), and the final. The lectures are him talking the entire time with a few in class journals here and there. Takes attendance on an app, sometimes lectures can be boring, but some topics are interesting
I strongly recommend taking Dr. Nalls class. The class is graded by four assignments. A midterm and final, which if you do the study guide will not be difficult, an end of semester journal, and term paper. His lectures are thought-provoking and his passion for the subject is evident. Pay attention to the lectures you will understand the concepts.
His lectures are well...I don't even know how to describe them. They're wild and very philosophical but in a weird opinionated/ political way. You don't learn philosophical theory as much as you listen to him talk. BUT the class is fairly easy. Do the study guides and the complete the journals AS they're assigned and you'll pass.
If youre on this site, youre likely looking at students w/ very extreme opinions. Im also one of them. Hes VERY articulate, uses anecdotes, and doesnt depend on a didactic style of teaching. You can participate in discussions if youd like. Exams are ridiculously easy. If I could take more classes with him I would. Very nonchalant.
Jeffery Nall is by far the best professor I've had this year. He takes his time in his lectures and attempts to demonstrate the concepts of philosophy in a way that is unbiased and comedic at times. He gives us alot of freedoms in class, recognizing that college students have alot to deal with. I appreciate his time and effort, do your share.
Professor Nall is amazing! His lectures are full of passion and he genuinely cares for each of his students. You're only graded on 4 things throughout the semester, so be sure to study and do well on those assignments when they're due. He's very upfront about what he expects from his students and I would definitely take his class again.
Only graded on 4 assignments (group project, journal project, two exams). Exams are easy and don't require heavy studying. The group project wasn't too bad. The journal project is a big ordeal. Make sure to stay on track with it to get a good grade. He seemed to teach weirdly specific things for an introductory course, but overall not bad.
Overall this class, specifically Prof. Nall, encouraged me to be a better student in my entire academic career. He is super inspirational and makes you want to learn, at least I thought so. I left every class telling everyone I could about him and what we talked about. If you want motivation to be a better human being, write better, etc. take him!
This was by far the most intriguing and thought provoking course I have ever taken at UCF. Professor Nall's lectures are so enlightening and interesting, but are also necessary for the midterm and final exam, as his discussions clarify and go beyond his notes/powerpoints. The type of class to sit in the front on the edge of your seat.
Dr. Nall hosts difficult but highly engaging class sessions. The in class lectures are well worth your time and attendance is a must if one wants to pass. Students are expected to read and write a great deal outside class and are frequently asked to give their own thoughts on topics discussed in the assigned readings. Difficult but well worth it.
Dr. Nall is a great professor to take assuming you're willing to question your beliefs (Not necessarily change!) and do the work he assigns on your own time. If you make a good faith effort to engage the material you will get a good grade. You won't get your grades on time, but rest assured that he's an easy grader if you follow instructions.
Professor Nall likes to assign busy work, about 500 word "Journals" due every week. Lectures are boring, surface level content that drone on and on. Is ridiculously tough on grading if you don't hold the same ideologies as him. 1/10 class, would not take again. Would recommend finding a different professor to take PHI2010 with.
Many students don't like this professor, but he follows a straight forward class approach. Not much use of PowerPoints in class, lectures full time, but if you pay attention it's a very inspirational class and he's also got a good sense of humor. Only a couple of grades, 2 exams, 2 projects, but if you put in the work you'll get the A.
One of my favorite proff. His lectures were so intricate and powerful (sometimes too complex i could get lost) but they really put things in perspective and make you think about things in ways you never have. Two exams, an essay, and journals are the only grades. Offers multiple EC opportunities. Doesn't remind you about test date, so be prepared.
Most of the class is based around writing. Just don't get behind like I did, and study for the exams and quizzes and you'll do fine. I had him online, so I had to do most of the work myself, he didn't do much teaching apart from his *occasional* powerpoint video.
For my sanity, I regret taking this class with this professor. Your grade only depends on "journals", a group project, and two exams.
Professor Nall really is a great educator. I had to take his class online due to COVID, but even then it was clear how zealous he is about philosophy. Although theres a huge amount of reading to do, I feel like the information he presents will benefit EVERYONE greatly. If you arent willing to open your mind and put in some work, good luck bro.
Professor Nall was a nice guy and his assignments werent too hard, but he makes you buy 8 books for his class, which costs a lot of money. He blatantly uses overly advanced vocabulary, as if hes trying to show off his iq, which makes it hard to understand whats expected. Also, if you ask him a question he just rewords the prompt as his answer.
Professor Nall was awesome. It was a rigorous class, lots of reading, work, and accountability. But he ensures you take something away from his teaching. Hes especially understanding to the learning experience post-covid.
I took this class fall of 2020 during the pandemic so unfortunately it was online. There was no zoom class, just lectures and readings for us to do every week. I am not sure what he does when he teaches in person, but I wish it could have been! He gave very kind, positive feedback on assignments and genuinely wants his student to do well.
Dr. Nall was truly a good teacher. He presented a lot of knowledge and did his best to make it digestible. His class may seem kind of intense, giving you just the weekend to read an entire book. But his expectations were always clear, and he did his best with teaching online.
By no means is this an easy A class, you have to work for your grade, but an A is attainable. Dr. Nall has high expectations, but he is a very fair grader if you follow his instructions. The group project kind of sucks, but you get it over with early in the semester.
Loved the class and the professor is nice and understanding, it's just a LOT of work to be done. Making time to do the work is important and keeping up with the week to week readings is important, but the readings are never difficult and you don't necessarily have to buy any. If you aren't a good tester this is a good class, b/c it isn't test heavy
Not just an easy A you have to study the readings to pass. Theres a decent amount of assignments so you have plenty of opportunities to fix your grade plus there was extra credit at the end. Hes good about communicating and was always easy to reach. I can tell he cares about his students being engaged and hes overall a really good professor.
Assigns way too many things and grades very harshly. Lectures are not organized very well and so the tests and quizzes are hard. There is a group project, a paper, 5 discussions, 5 quizzes, a midterm, a final, and a journal project with about 40 journals that are 100-300 words a piece. The professor was not good at responding to email either.
To take this class THERE IS A LOT OF WRITING AND A LOT OF READING. He requires over 6 books and has modules in which he expects students to watch hourlong documentaries on top of reading 100+ pages per week. Test questions were very specific and not easy to study for. Dr. Nall seems like he really cares about the content, but poor class structure.
While Dr. Nalls HUM2210 course has quite a few major assignments (4), the material taught is interesting and not difficult to understand. You MUST stay on top of the weekly modules (they can be quite time consuming) in order to succeed in this class. Overall, this class is not an easy A- it is interesting, but time consuming.
His material is very interesting but he assigns so much to read and watch that it is physically impossible to look through all of it. Exams arent too bad and quizzes and discussions are not too hard, but he expects a lot of his students and is not very lenient. Not too good at responding to emails so i recommend communicating with your other peers
Love, love, love this class! It is an almost ridiculous amount of work, but it can all be scheduled and you have the whole semester to complete projects. Quizzes/Finals count for barely anything, so just focus on the course work. Really cool guy, if you don't like reading or writing tho, you won't have a good time. If you do, you will
Tons of work. Not available outside of class. Comes across as arrogant. Class was miserable with the amount of work, and feedback (if given) was never helpful. Take another professor and spare yourself the headache.
There're weekly modules that use many forms of media to teach. Grade's made up of 4 discussion posts, a group project, paper, midterm/final test, and journal project. The journal project is a bulk of the grade w/ 30 entries @ 150 words each; it isn't bad if you don't procrastinate the whole thing. He gives great feedback and is very responsive.
There is a lot of reading assigned, but if you actively engage with the material in discussion posts and journal entries, you will get the A. Quizzes and Exams are not very hard. What I enjoyed about this class was the vast array of ideas we explored, and how much I grew. If you care about engaging and growing as a person this class is a great one.
Dr. Nall draws from his knowledge of feminist history to teach humanities and add an overlooked angle to the story of humanity. He takes the students through each age of man up to the rise of Christianity and encourages critical thinking through readings, reflective journaling, and projects. He has a clear syllabus that sets out expectations.
This class doesn't have a lot of assignments but just SO much reading and writing emphasis on writing. It's a lot for an elective class I would honestly pick something else. He also words everything really weirdly so it's hard to comprehend most of the time. It was just a lot of unnecessary work.
5 discussion posts. 4 quizzes w/ midterm and final (take notes and have them at ur side). only read the excerpts/articles when necessary but mainly focus on his slideshows for the answers. grade is based on writing journal entries (don't fall behind), a project (talk to ur group early), and term paper (1400+ words). easy class but time-consuming.
Dr. Nall brings something refreshing into the classroom. His perspective on history and the humanities is surprising when you see how he connects elements of gender, race, and religion intersect. He provides a balanced perspective on humanities. He also allows the students to journal and explore their feelings without judgment in a safe space.
Prof. Nall gives outrageous assignments that he expects the students to have zero issue with. If you approach him about an issue with an assignment he simply does not care and will make no exceptions.
I absolutely loved this professor! He is so inspiring, he inspired me to pursuit my minor in Humanities. The course is super organized, but there is a lot to read and write.
Dr. Nall is clearly very passionate about what he teaches. That being said, there is so much reading and writing for this class. I'm going to be honest, I mostly skimmed all the readings because it was just way too much. Don't buy the books, you won't use them. He is very picky with grading and formatting work. Interesting topics though!
This professor is the worst I have ever had. I am even afraid to comment on any of the things he has done.
Awesome and very intelligent teacher! Low effort class and I learned a bunch from his applicable lectures.
Class is graded on a few discussions and large assignments. 50 question midterm in final. Group project that is annoying. Took over a month to grade our essays (which are %15 of grade). Assigns WAY too much reading for this type of course. Probably about 9-12 hours of just reading a week. I feel like I did not learn a lot in the humanities.
Jeffrey Nall is passionate about what he teaches but he gives so much work and grades very tough. We had one big group project, one essay, and a huge journal project along with discussions and quizzes every week and one opportunity for extra credit. His grading scale is very weird and literally marks off any point for the littlest thing.
TONS of material, not at all bad though because you do not need to read all of it to complete assignments. I loved the lectures that I did listen to from Dr. Nall and he provides some very deep discussion material to ponder upon. The projects, essays, and exams were a tad extensive but only to ensure that people are really engaging with the text.
My review is based on summer B. If you're taking him during a regular fall/spring semester definitely take him, however, if you're planning on taking him for a 6-week term, plan on spending LOTS of time on this course. It is easy if you put the effort in it's just a lot of work. Overall, he was a great teacher and grader, and the quizzes are easy.
I enjoyed my time in the class. It was asynchronous and work was manageable. He gave great feedback on papers and gave detailed recorded lecture options. The textbook is optional
Took online, he is actually a genuine dude that loves his job and what he teaches. Journal and term paper are the only things for online. Keep up with the journals no matter what. It gets pretty heavy (6500 words at the end for me) Term paper is really easy and fun to be honest (1300 word min, write about movie you love or find interesting). Take.
he provides lots of busy work, and many readings to do every week. if you are taking this class for your GEP and not for your major take it with an easier professor. Expect Two 150-word journals a week, plus two group projects, and several papers throughout the course. He grades very hard, and is not forgiving, he expects perfection
He truly enjoys what he teaches and is a nice man who takes time for his students. But, the class involves a LOT of reading and writing. This was an online class and we still had a group project. The quizzes are easily passable. The exams are proctored. Not a bad class but I feel like there are easier humanities classes with a different professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY IF YOU ARE JUST TAKING THE CLASS FOR CREDIT. He is a horrible teacher in the aspect of the amount of work he requires you to put into the class. He expect 15 hours of reading from the student for each week and then demands so much work for finals week.
this course was way too much work for a gen ed course. every week there would be tons of reading (200 pages at least) plus videos and lectures then you'd need to write journals about them. if you take this prof DONT wait until the end to do all the journals. even tho they arent due until the end of the sem its way too much work to do in one week
Dr. Nall is very passionate about what he teaches. This was an interesting class, but so much work. Group project, final paper, weekly quizzes/discussions, final exam, and final journal project. It is necessary to keep up with the journals each week or else you will fall behind. They also help with the quizzes. Rubrics are confusing to understand.
Lots of work to do, especially the Journal Entries. If you do not keep up with that throughout the semester and self-discipline yourself, it will pile up. He gives lots of sources for the lessons, but I'm not sure I learned a whole lot.
Dr. Nall is very passionate about what he teaches, but he assigns way too much reading and journal assingments throughout the semester. I would not reccomned this class to anyone due to the amount of work in this class. He has no textbook, but the amount of lectures and other reading materials for this course is about three times the amount of one.
Dr. Nall is very passionate about humanities; however, I would not recommend his class if you are taking it just for your perquisites. He gave many assignments that were uncomfortable for me to do and they were not optional (required us to watch Don Jon). There were very few points in his class so if you did not do one assignment you were done.
Dr. Nall asked for a lot from us students when all of us were just taking the course to fulfill the credit. There was no textbook, instead, we were required to read and memorize numerous articles and videos. Every week we were assigned more than one journal for a single module which may not sound like a lot, but it required hours of reading.
I procrastinated on the journal project, and it's hell to try to do in a week. Not a hard class, but you NEED to set and keep your own deadlines. He assigns a lot of reading and videos, but you can get away with only ever touching a fraction of it. If you just want the GEP maybe take an easier professor, you do learn in his class though.
Jeffrey Nall is a very passionate professor. He really does enjoy this work and encourages students to be the same way. There are few quizzes, but they require you to know the readings REALLY well. Not a tough grader as long as you understand the work and try your best, however if you clearly don't care about the work, he can tell.
i took online for the summer. he uploaded the syllabus last minute listing multiple textbooks to purchase, some unable to find online for free. so much writing and reading. you have a big journal project the entire time and you have to do a paper ontop of that. also weekly discussion boards. workload is intense.
Caring professor
I actually had Dr.Nall while adjunct for Polk State College, he just doesn't have a page with them. He is amazing with very thorough feedback, which helped a lot with improving my writing ability. Just read instructions carefully and ask him if you don't understand something because he is very willing to help.
This guy is so bad, do not take him unless you actually care about humanities. He gives the most boring and uninteresting articles/videos to watch each week that you have to write about in the stupid journal entries. He also just gives out way too much work for a humanities class.
The professor is passionate about the humanities, but the workload is intense. Lots of readings, writings, and projects. unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool, but you'll need to stay on top of the work. Not an easy A, but you'll learn a lot.
He is very passionate about this course and what he teaches. If you're taking this class get ready to read a lot. I spent a lot of time reading and writing. It is a big work load don't recommend to take in the summer because all the work is crammed in 6 weeks. Overall you do learn he a fair grader won't recommend if trying to take a easy elective.
Do not take this class unless you are in love with humanities. He cares way too much about a required GEP class. Other humanities classes are sooo easy with light work. This is a very lecture heavy class and you have to look through every little thing to do well. do NOT recommend at all. So. Much. Work.
He is a good professor with a genuine interest in the humanities and is passionate about what he teaches. Although I have learned a lot, the amount of readings he assigns you in a sub-module for one module is excessive. I took this class for the summer and it felt very rushed. I don't think I would take him again, seems like a nice guy tho
This class is not very difficult, however it does heavily rely on you staying on top of your work consistently. If you wait last minute to do the journal project, you will not do good on it. Exams are easy and the only recorded ones are the midterm and final. I would not recommend this class if you are the type of person to procrastinate.
The professor really cares about what he's teaching and wants students to learn and apply what he's teaching.
Dr. Nall was overall an amazing professor and was very organized, the only small flaw I would say is that is gradebook is not made up of many assignments so there is not much room for error on some assignments.
Professor Nall clearly loves what he teaches. However, I wouldn't recommend taking his class if you only want to fulfill the GEP requirement. He assigns a lot of readings as well as his own lectures, which the quizzes and tests are heavily based on. The class isn't difficult, just tedious. Don't procrastinate as the work actually catches up to you.
Want an easy GEP? This is NOT what you want (but maybe what you need). It's a lot of reading and writing, but if you show the effort, he's a lenient grader. I learned so much, and he really cares about the subject. He makes you think!!! If your schedule is already loaded, find another professor, but if you have time, I highly recommend him.
He is very empathic and an amazing professor. We just love him !
Professor Nall is very passionate about the Humanities and gives thought-provoking work to get you to think as well. However, this work routinely consists of around 200 pages of weekly reading. It is honestly too much to remember at times, and can easily become stressful. Always be on top of your work if you want to pass, very hard to catch up.
Not your easy GEP at all, though you can achieve an A if you put in work and effort. All assignments are writing 75-250 words. About 2-4 each week. Discussions that are 250-300 words, replying back to 2 people with 100 words. LOADS OF EXTRA CREDIT. One big term paper that is graded toughly. For everything else follow the rubric and you will be good
AMAZING PROFESSOR.
Do not take this class expecting an easy A. I came in thinking such and was sorely disappointed discovering how much work was expected of us. Despite this, if you're able to manage your time to be able to complete several mini essays and discussion boards a week plus a decent sized paper, you can handle this class. Good professor though.
Nall makes his lectures and assignments pretty interesting surprisingly, however I will say the amount of homework was exhausting. Multiple weeks required watching several 1+ hour long videos along with tons of reading.
He was a really fair grader and accepted late work. But at the same time he gave so many assignments- all of which were written work.
It's very evident that Jeffrey Nall is passionate about his study, but it becomes difficult to fully appreciate this when I'm assigned with so much per week for a GEP. I've come to dread doing his assignments as they feel so draining, and this is coming from someone who is genuinely interested in the Humanities.
Overall, he was a good professor! His lectures were interesting, and he was a lenient grader. As long as you follow the rubric and do the readings you should be set. There's a midterm, final, multiple readings and quizzes a week, and a final paper. The final paper is just graded tougher than the rest. This is a good class to take in the summer.
It may look like a lot of information and assignments at first but once you actually start doing them it's not as bad as you think it would be. You do have to try and put work into the class but it's doable. Would recommend
