Pickron was a decent teacher, but some of the things he goes over a little fast, and the tests were extremely hard. I knew the answers to the quwstions, but he worded them differently, or added something extra to make you confused. Overall I would rate him a three though.
Early Civ was an alright class; would've been better if it hadn't been 9:00 AM. I had him the first semester he taught it here, so he's probably changed things by now; still, pay some attention in class and make sure you know your maps and you'll do okay. Bookwork isn't vital.
Essay tests. 'nuf said.
Take very good notes. I never did the reading but that's probably why I never did very good on the quizes. Has essay tests. He moves fast in class and sometimes is kinda confusing. Overall though he's a good teacher and he seemed to really care about his students concerns.
Very good teacher. he always asks if anyone has questions, and if they do, he answers it.. He's requires attendence; his quizzes are easy only if you read the book, and he requires attendence.. exam grade is only worth 30%.. he is probably my 2nd favorite teacher at oshkosh.
Seemed to enjoy teaching.
Whoa, I've never learned so much cool stuff about a subject in one class! Pickron rocks!
good teacher. take him, because he's interesting and knows what he's talking about.
he's a really great teacher... very enthusiastic. unfortunately he doesn't use any PP presentations or anything so the lectures are sometimes a bit dry. also READ THE BOOK -- if you don't, you are basically screwed for the quizzes :o)
If you have to get strapped with taking history, take Pickron's class. You won't be bored at least. Very good teacher and loves his subject. Filled in alot of blanks for me and I already knew alot as an adult student.
exams were essays and really hard
easy class, but not helpful
Keeps class moving...makes history somewhat exciting. Exams are hard, quizzes can be tough. READ the books...the essay isn't that bad, but the book is boring.
If obvious jokes and discussion based on easy questions that don't look to much further than the surface of material, this guy's for you. Study the study guides before the exams and it is not that hard -- you can't give 2 sentence answers, but you shouldn't be looking to do that in college anyways.
He really made early civ fun. He is personable and will always help you if you have questions. His quizes are fairly easy if you go to the lectures. He takes attendence so you get easy points if you go to class. His exams are essays which sucks but he is a very fair grader. Makes class interesting
Made Modern Civ pretty fun...the essays really arent that hard, but it's hard to study for 7 essays and only have one on the test...the Paper is pretty easy...READ THE BOOK...all of them are boring, but helpful. Has some corny jokes. Goes through material quickly, but goes in depth at times. Great teacher. Always willing to help
Upper-level history course- based entirely on discussion, only a handful of lecture days. A lot of reading, but no outside research paper. Longest essay exams I've had, but he provides thorough study guides. Very knowledgeable and very helpful both in and outside of class.
Exams are tough, but his notes/lectures are easy
By far, one of my more favorite teachers at UW-Oshkosh. Super helpful, really clear, you will know what will be on the test. He's really easy to get a hold of and really helpful if you go talk to him. If given the choice, take his class! If you go to class and glance over the text book, you will be fine!
ok lectures...need to read alot for quizes
tests arnt that bad if you read all three books you have to have. Exams are hard all essay...YOU REALLY HAVE TO READ EVERYTHING TO GET A DECENT GRADE...
super hard... don't take 4 quizzes and 2 essay test that are all really hard... lots of reading a texted book, small book, and two boring novels... i reccomend a different teacher unless you like reading and are good at essay test because both are hard for me so i didn't do to good... as a guy he is nice and a good guy the info is just hard
He's an amazing teacher. He makes lectures fun and knows what he's talking about. His tests are all essay and there's a LOT to study for, but he offers extra credit on exams and in class. He's very helpful and willing to have extra office hours.
He's a really good guy, but his class is really hard. I had to read 2 books on the material we learned and 2 extra novels. Way too much reading for a 3 credit class! Doesn't use any power point for his notes and talks really fast so you will miss things easily. I wouldn't take him again if I had to choose.
good professor but exams are difficult. i missed two classed the entire semester and ended up with a C. way too much outside reading.
quizzes can be hard. the midterm and final are easy as long as you study the guides and he gives them both to you in the beginning of the year. there's no surprizes in the class. wiht the larger textbook i skimmed the chapters to get an overall sense about discussions but really only used it to help study for the exams. the rubicon book you read an
READ EVERYTHING!!
He is a really great lecturer and he has so much information! he lectures alot! and it good at it, but refers to the boook !!!! alot! and expects you to know EVERthing from all three books... you have to read read read!!!
He lectures a lot. If you don't go to class you will fail the exams. The quizzes are easy, but the exams are difficult because they are comprehensive essays. He really loves the subject which makes it easier to pay attention. Overall a good prof.
Boring
I took his Interim history course and found it really easy. Highly recomended!
Why waste your time with this guy for either history 102 or 202 and take hard essay exams and quizzes and have to read the book when you can take haynes for both, get his dry sense of humor and storytelling style, no book usage and all multiple choice exams. Kind of a no-brainer there!
Wow, this class involves so much reading! There are 4 books required although some are quite interesting. Have to take own notes since he only gives an outline for lecture. Very relieved that he switched over to multiple choice exams this semester! He makes lecture interesting but it's bit of work! Involves doing a few write ups on readings too.
Very interesting and clear, challenging but still in reasonable amounts.
I was absolutely dreading this class, but Pickron is a really great teacher! There is a lot of reading, but that is to be expected in a history class. Overall, I think he is a great guy and he really helped to make things clear for me!
A lot of reading. He's pretty intimidating. He makes you sign your name for attendance and if you leave class early he'll call you out in front of the class and make you erase your name from the list. Hard tests, some of which are all essay.
Pickron is awesome. He focuses more on Greek and Roman Early Civ then the Asian Early Civ, so I found it easy. Take for interim if at all possible. It's A LOT of reading, but if you go to class and read the book it's an easy A. He also gives extra credit opportunities. Very willing to help if you have questions. Highly recommend!
Honestly, i showed up to class, took really good notes and studied for the essay exam questions right away from the beginning of the semester because they were given to you right away on D2L. Lectures get a little dry, but loves when you have an opinion. He's a good guy.
This was his Great Depression class over interim. He really knew the topics covered. There was a lot of reading (3 books), but only a 5 page paper requiring no outside research. He kept the lectures interesting with about 2 movies a week. Class discussion is very helpful. Exams are pretty long. I also took 369 with him and liked that as well.
Way too much reading and really full of himself. Took a couple of fortnights to grade the midterm. He is really smart but if you don't do the reading your in trouble
He's really passionate about the material he teaches, and makes an effort to stimulate discussion. HUGE stickler on attendance though, and will call you out if you text in class. Takes forever to get grades back though...my class didn't get our midterm grades back until 4 weeks after we took the exam. Overall, an alright professor!
He is kinda a hardass when it comes to attendance as well as texting in class. The class was interesting, however, and he does know his material. The class did require alot of reading from the textbook as well as two novels he assigned so in summary, if you don't plan on attending class and won't read what's assigned I don't suggest this class.
Very knowledegable in topic, however your answers to his questions during class discussions never seem to be good enough. He assigns A LOT of reading!!! And his exams pretty much suck. They're based off of the readings mainly & there's an essay portion which consists of 50% of your grade; I think the exams are unfair & hate the makeup.
I have receieved an A in all previous History courses (5 to be precise) & I am also a History minor. I got a C- in his class, that says a lot.
Too many papers required and he assigned a lot of reading. The topic he chose was too broad and did not allow for enough detail in his lectures. I feel that he expected too much for a 100 level course.
He assigned way too many papers for this class. He also made the class very boring and hard to pay attention in. I would not recommend taking honors seminar: ethics, with Pickron. You will not enjoy one minute of it.
Prof Pickron taught HIST 131 at Lawrence University this winter, and I thought he did a damn fine job. He assigns a lot of reading, and his tests are difficult, but it is all very worthwhile. Anyone who calls his lectures boring obviously hasn't taken many history classes - this guy is good. I sorta hope LU snatches him away from Oshkosh! :)
Professor Pickron knows his stuff. His lectures are pretty enjoyable to go to because he makes sense. He'll go out of his way to make sure you understand. You take a LOT of notes and do a LOT of reading though, so make sure you go to class - attendance is mandatory! If you miss five classes, you fail the class. Overall a good guy though!
He's a very educated professor but reading out of three books (2 text & 1 novel) simultaneously was not for me.Its difficult to take notes in class because he doesn't write anything or make up power points with info. its all verbatim.think twice before you take this class!
Professor was extremely helpful when I went in to talk to him. Definitely study for his quizzes and tests and show up when he shows movies because they are on quizzes. Also show up for class and he will be more willing to work with you. He also tells great stories!
I loved Pickron! His History 202 class is very easy, especially if you keep up with the readings. His Quizzes and Exams are also very easy. He really knows his stuff and I love attending his class. I would really suggest this class for anyone who needs a history credit or for the simple fact that you can learn a lot from it.
Classes were semi-boring. Lots of note taking. Lots of reading as well. Very hard midterm/exam. He is a guy who looks for dates. Constant studying all semester if you want a decent grade.
A LOT of reading, he treat the the class like everyone is a history major, quizzes were tough but if you study our butt off you can get a decent grade. Its a ton of work, but you learn a lot
He is very nice guy. There a lot of Reading. If I were you read up ahead of class starting. His Exam are kind of hard if your not history major.
Knows his stuff. Makes the class pretty easy because he leads the discussion where he wants it to go. 1 journal due every week so sometimes thats a lot.
Pickron is pretty cool. He takes his classes seriously and takes attendence every day. Make sure to read the readings before class cuz he asks questions and every book you read and lecture will be on quizzes. Midterm is impossible to fail study and make outlines and notecards. I'm enjoying the class :)
He knows what he is talking about and makes class interesting. He makes you do a lot of reading however, and the story books will end up being on your test and quizzes. Overall, he was a pretty good professor just a lot of work.
Took American Urban History. Excellent class, wish it was offered in two parts. Really awesome topic. Whish University offered more like it. Lots of discussion! Read, Read, Read. Come prepared. Some classes were hindered because of students not doing the reading. Take the class. Worth it and really full of lots of information.
Dr. Pickron is a nice guy as long as you show up on time and you are paying attention (no sleeping/texting/working on other stuff). He is very clear on what he wants done and he grades fairly easily. YOU MUST READ THE 2 NOVELS. If you do not, you're screwed. You are not allowed to miss more than 5 classes, so you are required to attend.
This is a very hard class. Requires a lot of reading, and requires you to attend outside events.
Very tough class. LOTS of reading. Material is interesting and Professor Pickron is great at lecturing. Be prepared to study hard for the mid-term and final. He is a great teacher but makes the material a bit harder than it has to be. Not an awful class but it's hard. Be prepared to read and go to class everyday.
He requires attendance. He just stands in front of the class and continues to talk until the class is over. The midterm and final are both 2 days long. Outside of class events are required and must write a paper on them. 2 novels and the text book you have to read out of.
He is not an easy teacher, but a very good one. Very enthusiastic about the topic. I highly suggest you participate in the class and he will like you for it.
Attendance is mandatory, you can only miss 5 times. Lots of reading you NEED to do. He is very helpful and will answer questions if you have them. He knows what he's talking about and wants to help you. Definitely need to study hard for exams.
Pickron taught a couple of classes at Lawrence this year again, and I wish we'd just hire the guy already. He's great. He can be intimidatingly awkward sometimes but he's definitely not a mean guy. It's hard to get by without doing the readings, so do them. Not a ton of work but he grades a bit harsher than most.
Pickron runs a very concise and different class style than most professors. Any notes you take are strictly from his verbal lecture, power points only have pictures. As long as your prepared to listen and write fast, you can easily fill up two notebooks in one of his courses. Be sure to read because he does pop quizzes.
He is a really nice guy but will call you out in front of the class if you are not paying attention (textingtalking). You HAVE to read the novels to get better than a C in the class. His lectures are boring but you have to pay attention because if you don't you wont pass. Wants you to do well but makes you work for it.
I took this class over interim. Excellent professor! Take notes on a laptop- lot of material to cover. We had a few pop quizzes, but they were fairly easy to predict over interim. Get a headstart on readings. Participate in class- it helps your grade! Do the optional essay if he gives that option again. Study the material and put in the effort!
Don't use your phone during class because he will call you out , but other than this he is very funny and a great professor.
He is a super nice guy. This class was basically a discussion between him and the class, with lectures once and awhile. It is a ton of reading, 4 books that are required, plus a research paper that requires you to choose at least 4 books and an article. The paper takes the entire semester, and its a comparative paper, not a research paper.
He was a funny teacher and class always went by pretty fast. Participation is a big part to your grade, so get ready to talk and ask questions. He also likes to meet with you here and there to talk about your tests and papers. Very helpful.
Do NOT take History 202 with him. He is very funny, but his tests are evil. He expects you to memorize 14 essay questions and be able to go into detail in your essays that he assigns on the test, and gives you 80 terms to study. Test are only matching and short and long essay, incredibly difficult. Be prepared to read 2 books and have quizzes
Took a Quest class with him out of recommendation from another student. Big mistake. He treats his students like infants, and you're not allowed to go to the bathroom/use phone or leave the class at all for a 90 min. class with no breaks. His didn't lecture at all, just expected us to answer questions. Lots of reading, group project was my grade.
Be warned: History 202 is HARD. Exams are split into two days, one for multiple choice and a short essay, the other for a long essay. Notes are not used in quizzes. But, the good news is that Pickron is interesting to listen to. It's clear he cares about his students, and though his rules are strict, he truly respects you. There if you need help.
Pickron is great! He makes you work for your grade, but he is so knowledgeable and genuinely cares about his students. It is clear that he is passionate about his job, the subject matter and teaching. He can come off as a little awkward when trying to approach him one on one, but he is soo willing to help in any way he can. Great guy, great prof.
DO NOT skip any classes. Your grade will drop if you do. Reading Textbook REQUIRED. Exams: Essays, he will ask for you to be VERY specific. Memorization! Oh yeah, don't be late for class, you will be called out and looked down upon on. DO NOT TEXT AS WELL! He will kick you out. #Respecthim
This class was the Quest 3 class- oral farm history. YEAH, oral FARM history. Lectures were quite boring and there's a lot of things he expects you to read from the books and d2l readings. He didn't grade things in a timely manner, pop quizzes were given so come prepared, only one exam and 45% of grade was our final project (an interview).
Ridiculously difficult class with loads of reading much of which is fictional stories apropos to nothing, but still constitutes 25% of your midterm and final. Gives potential final exam essay prompts at the start of semester, but as a result expects perfection on your essay. Super smart guy, but also very strict and intimidating. don't take this.
He was a great teacher, but you had to so A LOT of work. There are pop quizzes everyweek aswell. If you do not participate or show up you will not pass.
If you read the novels and take notes off of your text book you will pass. Listen in lecture, you'll be fine. Pop quizzes happen so make sure you're up to date. He talks the entire time and it gets a bit boring but he knows what he is talking about. He's a nice guy and isn't out to get you.
I would have never taken this class if I knew what it actually was. Way too much reading, project at the end is worth 40% of your grade and he never explains it. Not very helpful in any way, and is just a general ass. Also, terrible about answering emails or being in office during hours.
Good professor, but the final project is the majority of your grade and a lot of reading at the beginning of the semester.
Professor Pickron was the worst professor I have ever had. The work load from his class will make you believe, that he believes you have nothing to do but read about history. Readings are long and will take 1-3 hours, while pop quizzes are short but very specific. His classes are the worst hour and a half in a day, do not take his class.
Super awesome dude. Easy to understand and to talk to. Only two papers and class was fun.
I found this class was not what I was expecting at all, lectures were long and quite boring. He is a very approachable teacher. Participation points are what saved me from getting any lower. Make sure you pay attention, he will call you out in front of everyone to make an example of you if you aren't . I liked him as a person, not as a professor.
You really have to work for the grade, but his classes are awesome. He is very passionate about what he teaches.
Signed up for topics of modern U.S. history. I got the oral history of the university. The final project is worth 40% of your grade and expects you to spend every moment on his class. Super lengthy chapters at the beginning from online, and will ask questions about the smallest details in those readings. Sucks at grading on time. Hated this class.
He gives no time to do the oral interview of an Alumni. He acts like you have no homework near finals and can spend all your time on his class. His lectures almost dont want you to show up, but you have to or your grade will drop a lot. Do the readings, and the pop quizzes wont be hard. He emails back for questions, but you have to teach yourself
The whole class is based around class discussion every class which gets old and boring when the same kid answers 20 times. Extreme amount of reading that no one has time for (3 books). Is passionate about teaching and is very smart. Gave us pop quizzes which costed me an A- in the class. Overall he is okay, class is very boring and lot of reading.
Class was made much more difficult than it needed to be. Not the most understanding when it comes to first year students being in his class who are adjusting to college life and life problems that arise. How could a straight white man also tell me that I wasn't politically correct enough and tell me how I should view my own experiences?
Classes are mostly based on the readings that are assigned, and throughout the semester the readings become longer and more complex. There are quizzes every week on the readings, and if you don't read you won't do very good. Otherwise, he has good conversations in class about real world problems and has a pretty well rounded view on the issues.
Very knowledgeable professor, but cant write understandable exam questions and is a tough grader. Often takes weeks-months to get a grade back. However, enjoyed the class overall. Basically just discussion every class.
The most difficult class I've ever taken and he doesn't help. Doesn't give out study guides despite covering over 200 pages in notes and is incredibly stubborn when it comes to that stuff. He thinks you have basically taken only his class with the amount of work he has you do and if you don't come to class you are screwed.
SOOO much reading to do. If you take this be prepared to read and watch videos because that is what the exams are on. If you don't then you won't pass.
He's a good and personable professor. Make's lectures interesting, however, he can be seen as kind of offputting to people who are there to get their gen eds done. He gets annoyed when you have your phone out (like he got really mad) but that's a simple thing to avoid. Just show up, do the work, participate here and there and you'll be fine.
He has barley taught or lectured, so you only get what you read and teach yourself. he isn't very involved in the class and doesn't contribute anything on our online discussions. The semester is almost over and he hasn't graded a single thing yet.
DO THE READINGS. YOU WILL NOT PASS IF YOU DONT DO THE READINGS. the quizes are very easy if you actually read. pickron is a cool guy, participate!
Class is all about readings, make sure you do them because there is almost a quiz every week. One midterm, two papers, weekly discussions, and some extra "experience" stuff. He is a nice and caring professor! Participate in the lectures and do the readings before class. If you need help, this professor will help you! Overall, the class was not bad!
Let me put it this way: if we hadn't switched to online because of COVID, I probably would have done very badly in his class. His exams are very extensive and require you to memorize ridiculous amounts of information and details to write short essay-length responses. There was a lot of reading required for the class as well.
Dr. Pickron was a good professor, but he grades very toughly. Lectures do not have a lot of content on the slides, but he goes over the important things. Test were very straight forward.
Don't be stupid in his class, if you have your phone out or aren't paying attention, he gets annoyed, but that's on you. If you show up, do the work, and the readings, he's a pretty straightforward professor. He's not bad at all!
there is a test every other class on the readings. and he is very very opinionated and it seems like he will dislike you if you do not agree.
Be prepared for multiple quizzes, exams, papers and presentations. Be prepared to have to earn those points. However, the lectures are interesting and Pickron has a great personality. Multiple movie days. You must attend class.
You can tell he does not care about this topic. He does not give clear expectations on his wants at all and had multiple different instructions posted for the same assignment and was mad when students did not do what he expected in his head. Overall, would not take again, ruined my GPA because he didn't care at all.
Professor Pickron is a great professor. Genuinely learned from his class. Lots of reading assignments but honestly helped deepen my knowledge for the class and tests. Enjoyed his class and as long as you show up, read, take notes and pay attention you will do just fine in his class.
Lots of pop quizzes with SUPER specific answers and you have to be VERY VERY familiar with the reading in order to get them right. Not too much homework besides doing the readings, but the assignments you do have don't get graded for several weeks. My midterm wasn't put in the gradebook until a week before the final.
Professor Pickron is quite literally the worst teacher I have ever had. His lectures are impossible to follow and he almost never uses visual aids. He assigns 20-50 page reading and quizzes the classes on the material without teaching us any of it. The assignments are not well explained and the essay prompts are meandering and confusing.
Professor Pickron was a cool guy. He was not always in class, but when he was, I enjoyed his teaching. However, he often led discussions about readings, which I didn't mind, but that is not everyone's favorite thing. He took a while to grade assignments, but they were in eventually. Overall, I thought he was a nice guy and I enjoyed his class.
Paper grading criteria is ambiguous, as there is no rubric. You must pay attention to the syllabus, because professor will not notice you about the quiz.
I hate you UW Oshkosh for letting this man go. Get rid of the ones who don't care about their students. Thanks!
