If you want a teacher who assigns double the work as other English 101 teachers and grades twice as hard, take Dr. Pusch.
Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who isn't planning to be an English teacher. He is over-demanding, and grades extremely tough for a 200 level class. The work load is more than your average 400 level class, so beware.
Expect a lot of reading, obviously this is an english class. However he requires a lot of extra journalswriting assignments that many of the other EN 209 professors don't. The journals and portfolio were a pain to keep up with and he's not very clear at explaining his expectation for major writing assignments until the class asks many questions.
He's funny but not as funny as he thinks he is. He assigns long papers and expects you to remember everything he said in class when he writes them. He failed me for not meeting the word limit but helped me out in office hours. Be warned: he's a GDI so GDIs probably like him better. Take him if you hate your GPA.
I was trying to bring up my GPA up with some light summer classes.. I wish I had checked here before choosing his class because it is brutal. He gives very frequent, short quizzes that are mostly short answer and fill in the blank. He grades very strictly on participation, and he requires you to read a TON. I recommend to EN Majors only.
I took it as a summer class and the reading was a lot considering I was taking 2 classes. That being said I did not read much of the material and made a 100 on the final by going to class and paying attention. He gives really captivating lectures and specifies exactly what he expects on the final in his lecture. He gets a bad rap for being tough.
stupid class, hard quiz and exam
I'm an EN major. He made me reconsider my major. Acts like you don't have other classes. Never canceled a class. Gives 50 pages to read every class & fill in the blank quizzes. Doesn't actually teach anything . Makes assignment guidelines unclear & then grades harshly. Takes no excuses for late anything. Mom died? Paper was late? Still a penalty.
Hard EN class ever, believe me.
He gives a large number of in-depth quizzes that you can only take in class. Expects you to read about 50 pages for every class meeting. Does give good feedback on reading responses and is a fair paper/test grader. If you have the option, probably best to go with another professor, this class was pretty tough.
At first I absolutely hated him and his style of grading. Once the semester went on and I actually applied myself he grew on me and my grade improved. This s a hard class but if you work for it, it will feel rewarding. I would take him again.
He gives all filling blanks and short answers for exams which are tough
This guy is a cake walk if you like to read. Tells you exactly what's on the final and I got a 87 and I barely studied. He's chill af
Hardest class I've taken, but he is an amazing professor. Lets everyone participate and makes sure everyone is truly comfortable with the material. He takes really boring material and still makes the class interesting. You absolutely have to read or the pop quizzes and tests will suck. If you read and go to class you can most definitely get an A.
I strongly recommend incoming freshman to avoid him at all costs. I am a sophomore with a 3.9 GPA and this was the only class i have not made an A- or above in ( I Earned a NC.) Great guy and really funny however, he acts as if this is the only class a student has. Extensive amount of reading followed by frequent, tough quizzes.
Absolutely loved Dr. Pusch.
When you first look at his rate my professor than you get worried. That was the case for me. Soon to find out he is a great teacher. Yeah, the class gets pretty hard sometimes but he is a honest guy and a fair grader. Go to class and do work and you'll get at least a B in the class. I got a B+ and I am a terrible writer. He is very involved also.
this man is hilarious and honestly makes it hard to fail. if your doing your work and going to class (like you should be) getting a good grade in this class should not be difficult.
Very strict, not understanding at all. He is a very tough grader.
Dr. Pusch is rigid about deadlines and word-count on assignments. While his quizzes are relatively easy, lectures intriguing, and assigned reading not too overwhelming, give yourself plenty of time while writing papers to insure that they meet the required word-count and are turned in on time. Otherwise, your grade will be reduced tremendously.
Super easy to get an A. The quizzes can get picky but the journals are basically free As. Essays are short like 1250 words and he gave us a final exam review presentation. Easiest english class I've had.
The readings for this class were really interesting because I got to read a bunch of well known stuff that I had never read before. The way the essays were formatted was kind of dumb but not too terrible. Dr. Pusch is an interesting guy, and I really enjoyed this class. Literally, if you just read and show up, there is no way you won't get an A.
Great Professor. Funny and informative. Attendance is not mandatory, but will definitely help your grade.
I like Dr. Pusch but he made EN 210 much harder than it needed to be. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives pop quizzes on the readings and he doesn't drop any grades. If you do not read every assignment given, then do not take the class!!!! If you do not read the homework given every night, you are screwed.
Mr. Pusch is an amazing literature professor! It is very obvious that he loves what he does, and he is very engaging with the class. You have to buy the books and read almost every night, but the readings are usually not too long. There are some pop quizzes, typically just plot questions from the stories you read. I really recommend this teacher!
Pusch is an easy going person, clearly provides guidelines for assignments and is easily accessible outside of class. He is funny and makes coming to class easy. I began his class being a poor writer but his assignments are really helpful. If you go to the Writing Center he will give you extra points on your essays.
there is a lot of ready but most of it is good. Pusch really enjoys what he teaches which makes it easy to like his class. he gives extra credit for going to the writing center.
Hes a good teacher in class, but when he grades your papers he says you write stuff that you didnt even write. So his feedback is less helpful. Gives lots of pop quizzes & if you dont read the material you will fail them.
Dr. Pusch is a great prof and it's a very easy course for something honors. It's a lot of reading, but that's to be expected in a Lit class. Don't fake the reading throughout the semester because even though he won't notice it will make the midterm and final impossible to pass.
Very laid back professor. Great guy! Grades pretty easy. However, if you skip class, you won't pass.
He was a 101 professor that never did what any of the other 101 professors did. His grading was really weird and it was very hard to get an A on a paper. Always read what he gives out to read.
He is very passionate about literature, so if you are not as passionate, this class will be hard. There's a ridiculous amount of reading (about 7 full books along with many long articles in between), which are difficult to analyze, and an extensive amount to remember, on top of in-class lectures. Extremely time-consuming and stressful class.
Dr. Pusch is my favorite professor at UA! He is very passionate about what he teaches so if you show up and participate in the discussions you will learn a lot. He does a great job at making early American lit enjoyable and makes lots of jokes. Take him!!
Essays weren't too hard, readings were boring at times, but Dr. Pusch did a great job for an entry level first year English class.
This guy is terrible, if you don't want to spend 10 hours a week outside class on an introductory English class then do not take him.
Dr. Pusch was an fine English teacher. It was very clear what grading would be and although the quizzes were pop, they were simple and 100% plot-based. He didn't ask you to wildly interpret literature, just to read it. I got an A by reading SparkNotes and listening in class, most of the quiz questions you can get just by listening in class before.
Attendance mandatory. Pop quizzes were given (12 throughout the semester), and you had to do the reading in order to pass the midterm and final. In class he would even say "sparknotes can get you through the quizzes but you'll fail the final if you don't do the reading" and he was right. Overall a nice and funny guy, but get ready to work hard
He's just really not that great. The class is a huge workload. There are hours of reading you have to do to prepare for each class. He is not very accessible outside of class, as he has hardly no office hours, and even if you do catch him outside of class, he's not going to give you any helpful feedback.
I don't think he ever gave a single person an A on a paper. There was a girl in my class and he told her that her writing was amazing and she should consider switching to an english major, however he never gave her higher than a B+ on any paper. He also wore LSU colors the day after we lost to LSU, thats just hurtful
Laid back and easy class! He says what to do in your essay and if you do it you get an A. I probably would have had an A but I missed a few quizzes. He doesn't care why you miss its just a zero for that day. He gives bonus points for going to the writing center and game night. He 's pretty chill and lets everyone just talk.
Pusch is a good professor who knows the material. He lectures a lot but take good notes and you'll do well on all of the pop quizzes and exams (don't miss class either). He makes sure to prepare you well for everything so the exams are easier but he gives you a final essay on top of the exam which is a lot. Set aside a lot of time for his class.
Professor Pusch isn't the easiest professor, but by no means is he a bad professor. He's a tough grader, but if you put effort into your papers, he'll notice. You can get extra credit for going to game nights and the writing center. He welcomes open floor discussion among students most of the time, but if you like your GPA, DO NOT SKIP HIS CLASS!
I HATE THIS MAN. His work is HORRIBLE. We literally had to read hundreds of pages every week. He is such a hard grader too. I tried to read the horrible books we had to read and I still did bad on the exams and quizzes. Whatever you do, beware of taking his class. Hes HORRIBLE!
Whatever you do do not take this man. I tried so hard on my responses and I have never made over an 80. The last paper I did he didn't even leave comments. Not lenient or understanding just flat out mean guy.
This man chooses to take a lower-level literature class way too seriously. The amount of time I put into the assignments and the readings was hours after lectures. do not take him if you can prevent it. Even as an online class and no pop quizzes very difficult. no one needs to spend this much time on a class that isn't for your major or minor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He takes an intro American Literature class too seriously, and is an extremely hard grader. Being diagnosed with COVID during finals week, I had informed "Jeffrey" Pusch of that matter. With experiencing the awful symptoms of COVID, it was quite difficult to do the final exam. He ended up failing me anyways with COVID
I would not reccommed Dr. Pusch's class because he is not helpful if you are not doing well. He also only takes a few grades so if you do poorly on one, your grade is pretty tanked.
Pusch is easy going and makes class enjoyable. Although he didnt require attendance, he did have pop quizzes that essentially made attending integral to your grade. Make sure youve read, class is often more interactive than it is lecture-based. Overall, a good professor as long as you come prepared and ready to participate.
Dont take his class. He makes this class way too hard and bases it on a few grades. And pop quizzes? At least let us study. even if you read you wont do well on the quizzes. Also doesnt take doctors notes!! Will give u zeroes for the pop quizzes EVEN if you have a note from a doctor. Terrible
Hes actually really nice and fun once you start to have conversations with him. He gives pop quizes on readings. Only 3 papers.
Dr. Pusch is hands down my favorite UA professor and this wasn't even a class for my major. I loved his class so much I waited a year to have him for Am Lit 2 and was not disappointed! Classes are discussion led, and he's really great at talking over your opinions on the text instead of just saying you're right or wrong. Tests are easy if you read!
I would say if you come to class than you will pass pretty easy, The final exam was the hardest part of the class but too be fair I did not actually read a single book that we were assigned I just used spark notes and ended up with an A- in the class so if you know the summary and the vocab you should be fine
Really cool guy but missing class will not fly. The readings he assigns are hard to read, boring, and long. He's a good talker, but I really struggled with tests- they are definitely challenging. You're gonna have to work for an A in this class for sure.
I like Pusch but the work for this class is insane-- 50+ pages of reading each class, once a week pop quizzes, writing, etc. Each quiz has some tricky question on it that he spends 5 minutes after the quiz trying to convince you it's not a trick question. Gives little feedback on writing and is unclear on assignment requirements. Take someone else.
This was a very enjoyable class, but the readings were a bit hard to keep up with. Dr. Pusch was caring and funny, and his lectures felt more like a class discussion which made things very easy to understand. There are easy pop quizzes every now and then, and a final paper along with the final exam. Also four reading analyses that are self-paced.
Very nice guy, the class was just way too much work. It's multiple difficult chapters for every class with frequent pop quizzes so you cannot miss a class. I wouldn't take him again not because he is not a good teacher, but because the workload is too heavy. There's 3 major assignments/projects over dead week and finals worth 65% of your grade.
Dr. Pusch was flexible about missed pop quizzes, would allow to make-up. Every class we would be going over a new reading assignment or the next set of chapters for assigned books we were discussing. Litcharts and Sparknotes will be your friends for this course, I personally did not do much of the assigned readings.
Amazing professor! Only three big writing projects with no homework. No exams.
Do not take this professor. By far the worst professor I have had. You will have pop quizzes on readings that are very difficult to understand. The midterm and final are both difficult as well because all questions are open response and very in depth. He is also a very tough grader.
WORST PROFESSOR!!Never had a harder english class.he is mean and shows favoritism. He has ridiculous pop quizzes that are hard.He will tell you to study certain things for the exam and then put completely different things. Please do not take him if you can help it. He is so awful and acts like he's better than everyone. Never responded to an email.
He was super passionate about what he taught I just struggled managing all the readings and quizzes, but a great guy!
Pros: lots of extra credit, funny stories, dog pictures, merciful, laid back, never keeps us past Cons: long books, quizzes, midterm, Bartleby
Pros: Will WORK with you, even if you miss half the classes (me) Promotes class discussion Doesn't drone on Funny for a literature teacher Answers dumb questions without being condescending Offers bonus pts. Cons: Powerpoints online are usually useless for review if you miss class No making up quizzes (but drops lowest) Midterm: 94 Final: 99
I went in with low expectations because of these reviews; luckily, those didn't turn out to be accurate at all. I loved every second I spent in this class and actually felt bad the few times I skipped. Yes, you have to open the books and read while also actually going to class to do well in this class, crazy concept... welcome to college! Take him!
Dr. Pusch is a great professor and I would definitely take him again. Although you do have to put in the work to read the books, his tests and quizzes are fairly easy if you pay attention in class and do the readings. He is funny and his lectures aren't boring.
While Pusch is funny and involved in class, the work load is horrible. 50+ pages to read for each class with a quiz you likely won't do well on unless you like reading and English in general. I emailed him multiple times with no response. His midterm and final are too in depth to do well on. Take someone else.
Hardest English class I've ever taken. Reading comprehension quizzes and tests throughout the semester. Tests were much harder than he prepared us for. I went to all of the classes, did the readings, took notes and still didn't do as well as I hoped. He is a nice guy, but it doesn't feel like he cared about how well we did.
He is a great guy super funny and truly likes what he does. His class is pretty hard but if you pay attention in class and keep up with the work you should be fine. He will work with you as well. He does pop quizzes but you can pretty much tell when they are coming. The work load is heavy but he is a great dude.
Class is pretty hard for a required literature credit. He assigns pop quizzes, and his exams are difficult. This class was harder than my upper-level major classes and required a ridiculous amount of work for what it was. Be prepared to read 30-50 pages a night too. The only plus with this class is that he is funny.
This is the only class I have this year that doesn't feel like I'm sitting in there forever. Homework is reading & in class he either lectures with slides or there's discussion. You have to do responses on the readings but you get bonus for going to the writing center. The midterm was easier than I thought. I'm taking him again in the spring!
Professor Pusch is one of the best professors at Alabama. He makes this class so engaging and truly wants to see his students succeed. There is a lot of reading (50 pages per class) but its a literature class, so. He explains every story and gets the key points across, has bonus opportunities, drops lowest quiz grade, and gives clear guidelines.
Best english professor at UA! Very engaging and interested in everybody's success in the class. The readings are not bad, people are just dramatic. His lectures are very intensive and you can often pick up on info you missed while reading! Quizzes are not very serious and they help prepare you for the midterm and final. Great guy, super funny!
Genuinely my favorite professor. I'm taking him again next semester. A lot of reading, and he gives pop quizzes though. Not too bad. He's hilarious, and overall just a really reasonable person.
One of the best professors at the school. He's hilarious, and it makes the class go by smoothly. He wants the best for his students, and I felt like he truly cared about us. I'm taking him again next semester! #justiceforjeff
BEST english prof I've had. He is funny, relatable and so clear on his grading criteria. He's generous with bonus points and covers so much material in class. There's pop quizzes roughly once a week, but go to class and you'll do just fine. He's a quick emailer and so talkative, I couldn't recommend him more!
Gives pop quizzes on readings, but they are super easy if you just skim the books. He is very enthusiastic about literature and so the class is rarely boring.
I loved this class. Though you have to read and there are pop quizzes, it is super easy. If you listen in class, skim over the books, and ask questions you should have an easy A. He was very enthusiastic about what he was teaching, and the class was never boring. Highly recommend taking this class if you're willing to put in a little work.
Actually, one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I ended EN 210 with over 100. There is no reason for this class to be so hard. Terrible grader. The midterm and exam are so hard, with no review or study guide given. Do not recommend him AT ALL.
I wasn't a huge fan of this class or professor. I found the material he chose boring (coming from an English major) and the work to be heavier than other lit surveys with weekly pop quizzes, exams, an essay, and a portfolio. Maybe I just didn't get his personality but I didn't find him as charming as everyone else in the reviews.
Kind of just lost respect for this professor as the semester went on. The books and assignments are horribly boring, and nobody talks in class, so it's just awkward. Asks inappropriate questions about seduction and deception in relationships, likes to ask questions directed at gender, too. Cares way more about his superiors than students. 0/10
Very reading heavy. He makes it seem like midterm and final will be much harder than the actually are. Going to the writing center gives you a ton of extra credit. Pop quizzes are annoying but easy and he drops your 3 lowest scores. Readings are boring but stay on top of them and you'll be fine.
Professor Pusch, while somewhat charismatic, is only an ok teacher. He's decent at teaching; however, he gives pop quizzes and requires routine reading outside of class. He also gives pop quizzes w/o any warning whatsoever. There's also no rubric for essays, and even if you follow everything he says to do in class he'll grade your essay harshly.
He is the best English professor I could have asked for. I haven't read any of the books, but if you show up to class, you will pass. There is honestly no reason to fail his class. It is reading heavy, but the books are interesting despite the time period they're set in.
Love him as a person, and he's always easy to reach. Essay heavy with a few pop quizzes on reading, we did but very occasionally. He is very good at what he does. Not an easy A but not a terrible class at all.
