He was always funny but that doesn't help my grade. He was never clear with how to develop his papers. Either he needs to clarify or the 1101 teachers need to teach these paper setups.
his class was very enjoyable! i learned a lot! not hard..not easy...! ur definitely gna be a lot smarter after u teke his class! research and study and u'll get an A/B.

This guy is a dueche bag! He barely explains his assignments and then expects a perfect paper. Not helpful& doesnt lecture about anything. Expect to waste your time
He is one of the best teacher I have ever had. I learned a lot from him. Some students think that his class is too tough, but you would never learn true knowledge without challengeing. I like his style very much.
his assingments are rough but hell work with you if you ask him. hes a real cool guy and youll learn alot from his class.
Well, I don't know about you all but I think he's hott!!! I love his teeth, his smile, his educated/educating brain. Forget the assignments, I just showed up to look at him.

He is a great professor, very clear in his assignments, very knowledgeable, extremely intelligent guy and finally he is incredibly hot but the worst dresser ever.
hes a real good teacher, he has great stories and keeps your attention. the papers are a bit difficult but whan writing papers what one is easy.
Prob my favorite teacher yet, Very fun. He loves boxing. I took him in the summer, and he was very laid back. Makes boring stories interesting. Loves Hamlet a little too much. ;-)
One of my favorite teachers every, this guy loves literature and it definately shows.
He's a cool guy..very down to earth, pretty laid back!As a teacher I'd say he gets a b-...oh yea..he's a hottie..funny too!Hate to say this..but he has no sense of style! :/
He does know his stuff, but I didn't learn anything. My new professor actually lectures and explains analizing literature. I think that he taught the intro to lit like an advanced lit class. Now that I understand analyzing lit I would def take his class
He is HOT!! But he would look a lot better if he cut his hair. Oh yeah, he's pretty good at the professor thing as well.
great teacher. interesting discussions, not always about english.
SUCKS!
I was leary about him when I first saw him, but once I heard him read poetry I melted. He is smart, beautiful and really well educated. If you really want to learn something take his class. He's nice to look at too.
Great teacher. Class was easy, he made it fun and interesting.
goes over every bit of text. down to earth and easy to talk to. explains papers in detail. however he is horrible with his attendance policy. if your late 1 min your absent. be on time or fail.
Take him! you will be better at writing essays afterword. make sure you go to the writing center. Hey, he teaches Hamlet, what more do you want! I mean, does it get any better than that! I don't think so.
I recommend him to anyone. You'd better take english with him than with any other freak. Young, nice and good communication skills. He mixes english with AML but as long as you go to class nothing is hard. Average appearance, but girls like anyone with power, right?
Nice laid back attitude. he allows you to express your opinions about a variety of literary topics. Best of all his outline is easy to follow and he encourages his students to improve with their writing.
he is my fav teacher that ive ever had..i wanted to fail the class just to take it again..he is awesome, he is so intelligent and you will learn alot in his class. he is highly highly recommended
Great teacher! The work is definately hard but well worth it. He really makes you think and tought me to analyze literature in a whole new way!! You will definately work for your grade in his class but you will learn!! A++++++++++
a lot of writing
hes really hot!!! listening to him resight poetry was awesome!
He's okay.
SOOOOOOOOO HOTT..and you will walk away with alot of knowledge..
He's a smartass, and likes when you call him one. He has the classic pompous young teacher attitude. Also he's apparently the only non-geriatric teacher on campus. I guess he's good looking the way the last girl left at the bar at closing time is hot.

This professor always has an attitude when you ask a question. You have to work extra hard to pass his class. He makes you write huge papers and gives you low grades, but won't cretique the paper. How are you supposed to know your weakness if he doesn't want to tell you. The impression I got is that he wants students to fail.Don't take ENC on lin
This guy is HOT!! He actually made class fun to attend (aside from his good looks!) and made otherwise dry text material interesting. If he teached every subject, I would register every class with him.
MAKES CLASS FUN AND SOMETHING TO LOOK AT WHILE YOU LEARN
I have never laughed so hard in all my classes. Not only does he actually like the things that he is teaching, but he teaches them with such vigor It makes him the ideal teacher for classic lit because students often feel disconnected from that part of their education. Its hard to see why one would study such things and he gives you a reason. Grade A in teaching Just don’t be fooled He’s no easy A, You’re gonna work if you wanna pass his class in good standing.
He is always willing to explain an assignment multiple times, for those who may not understand it. Also, he loves tangents, which helps ina way because everyone doesn't get so bored while there sitting in class for either an hour and a half or possible 3 hours. He makes class fun to go to. I come home every night talking about it.
This guy sucks and he grades too hard, I wouldn't reccomend his class
Horrible for online.Very unclear on assignments. Long time to answer ?'s online. Not very helpful. Doesn't explain literary tech.,etc. just expects you to know it already. hard to find sources for papers he assigns.Would not take again.
He is soooo HOT! Hard class, but I learned a lot from him.
So incredibly gorgeous that if I had the balls to, I would ask him out. I was so upset when the course was over! So fun to listen to, and really teaches you how to interpret literature. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn as opposed to someone who just wants to skate by. Mr. Rubenstein, I love you!
He is clear on explaining literature, but he grades papers too hard, it's almost impossible to pass, then when you ask him for advice, he shuts you down and tells you to correct what comments he made, what help is that? Trust me, the writing center doesn't even help. Even if you stay there for 4 hours.
Mr. Rubinstein is my DAWG!!(of course he would not go for that type of language)But he is my buddy and he is really funny. He goes on these crazy tangents. Everyday I go home after his class i'm always talking about hoe good it was. TAKE HIM because he is awesome!!!
I was expecting an English class not a literature class. Very good teacher of literature and extremely knowledgable on many things. However I didn't sign up for a literature class. If you don't want to work for your grade this is not the teacher for you. All the assignments are based on Literature and harshly graded. Tough attendance policy.
Do not take this teacher!!! He is so unfair on grading and gives you grades you dont deserve. His tangents are really annoying and happen every class meeting. He doesnt grade on a rubric nor does he like to meet with you, and when he does he cant explain why you received the grade you did! Horrible teacher. Big mistake if you take him!
Do Not take him as a teacher. He is very unfair with his grading policy. He is not very clear on his assignments. He goes way off topic to much especially about 911. He thinks he knows everyting. He will seem really nice when you fist meet but don't be fooled.
I put serious effort into my essays and only recieved as high as a B-. His grading is strict and his tangents of vegetable oil and politics got extremely dull. Teach for God's sake! I wanted to know more about what we needed to learn regarding literature. He's alright, but you'll have to work hard for an A. I had no problem with that and still...
He is a nice guy, but he grades on feeling. He does not help you prepare for exams,he thinks you should already know what is on them. This class is a lot of writing and he gets way off topic. If you don't mind writing and going to class just to talk about b.s. take this class.
HOT!!! Looks aside, pretty tough professor. A little cocky, but inspiring. Yes, he goes off on tangents a LOT, but come on, this class is such hard work that its nice to talk about reality as opposed to literature and poetry. If you're willing to work, Take him.
he wanted to talk about sports and politics (mainly how much he hates bush) the entire class, almost every class too! It was so frustrating! Alot of times we would have to remind him that it was an english class and that we needed to do something that related to it. He is funny, but it gets old after a month.
He goes off in tangents tooooooooooo much about Bio diesel fuel. He is a professor who does not show interest in his students at all. He is very cocky and thinks he is right about everything. He grades extremely hard. I put so much effort into his essays and have not received a grade higher than a C. He only talks about english for 30 min he suxxxx
Rubenstein is a good teacher for those who are already strong in english. I took his class in link with Sociology. I always got good grades on my papers and I didn't put much effort into it. He is a bit cocky and goes off on tangents. He is obsessed with debating people on Palenstine and 9-11 topics. Don't take if english isn't a strong area for u
Personally not being from this country and speaking a pretty bad english i took him and think he is awsome!!!! he helped me a lot with everything.. as long as you are willing to work then you will be just fine!!!!i recommend him for everybody!!!
He is so funny, laid back and makes english interesting. I also had him for IDS connections and I would take him again if I could. Plus I think he's kinda cute with the long hair.
Easygoing,no notes, the readings are done in class, the only play is also done in class, no homework. You have the whole semester to do the essays, and I was impressed that I turned all the essays on the last day, and got a B.I'm really happy, and will take him again. He lets you write your essays again.FOLLOW THE PROPER FORMAT!
He keeps you interested with his stories and tangents, but when it comes to explaining assignments he isn't extremely helpful. He gave me the first C I ever got. I worked long hours on researching and perfecting my essays. Some people I know sought for a lot of outside help and still recived B's. Nice looking. Needs to go on "What not to wear"

What a complete jerk! He has got to be the laziest, yet most vain professor I have ever had. As a result, his class is ridiculously hard. For those who read this and think that I am a lazy, incompetent student, I will be graduating this semester. Don't take this guy if you have a choice. By the way Ruby, the H in HCC does not stand for Harvard!!!
awesome teacher. Yes, I had to work hard, but I had a great time in his class. Just study, turn in your essays on time, attend every class, and participate. If you do that, then you should be just fine.
I took his online class &HATED IT!!! Maybe he is a good teacher in person but from my online experience he is horrible!!! Most of my classes at HCC are online so I am familure w/ the processes but he is not!!! His sylabus is constantly changing, its wrong, there are no specific due dates yet he marks late. DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS!!
Online course is tough but you will learn. Don't expect any hand holding or prompt replies. You have to be VERY self motivated if you want to pass with this guy.
He does not seem to care about his online courses. He answers e mails late if he answers them at all. He does not engage conversation in the discussion boards. His syllabus is outdated and his instructions can sometimes be unclear. I wonder if anyone in HCC administration knows how bad he is?He should not be allowed to teach online courses. Beware!
I took his class online. I do NOT recommend this. A LOT of writing that does not count towards the Gordon Rule. There is a seperate textbook for the online class. Takes him awhile to get back to you.
Unhelpfull. Not clear on instructions. I was an A student with a few Bs and I got a D in this class, even though I worked ridiculously hard. His grading is unfair and biased. Slow or no response to emails. I didn't even know what my grades on essays were till the end. If you don't know what you're doing wrong how can you change it Mr. Rubenstein?
I took him for eng2 and his online IDS class. These people who write on here that he's not a good teacher must have been the one's who didn't ever go to class. He's an excellent teacher. I am a better writer than I was before his class. He is very clear about how he wants things done and goes by his schedule. He is eye candy too! Highly recommended
Great teacher, the material is challenging but he explains everything out in plain english. He's passionate about teaching, and loves to go on tangents which isnt a bad thing. It distracts from the class material which can be pretty intimidating. It puts you at ease. He's a cool knowledgable guy. He is one of my favorite teachers of all time.
I would advise against taking Rubinstein for an online course. He does not answer e-mail and he is vague when he does decide to answer a question.
This teacher is horrible! i came here to see how he was beafore i took his class and was completly mislead. Im having a very horrible expirience with him. He doesn't return your emails fast enough, is not clear on what he wants in his assignment and i work so hard for his essays and test and still get bad grades.Dont take him!
Before this class I had always done the best in English. I got a C in his online class and I tried my hardest. He never gets back to you on any questions you may have and expects way to much out of you when he is giving so incredibly little. I would highly advise against taking this guy. That of course is just my opinion.
I think Reubinstien is a pretty fair teacher (as fair as most are- ha-ha), but the course shouldn't have been called "Late American Liturature," it should have been called, "As I Lay Dying 101." He was only concerned with Modernism, and was rather narcissistic about his world-veiw; which he spent most of the class time on.
This techer is a little unfair i think. he belittles people in class and he just loves himself.
This teacher is extremely intelligent and challenging. On the other hand, he tends to color all the literature he reviews in class with his perspective and seems to expect the students to regurgitate his ideas back to him as if they were his own. I only recommend this class if you are abit of a follower and write well.
This professor gives little preparation for exams and in class essays, is not available during office hours and does not check his e-mail. His grading is very hard. Take this class only if you have a lot of time to dedicate to going to the writing center. It takes a lot of work to get good grades in this class.
Never in office during office hours. Does not check e-mail's until just before class. Difficult grader.
I had him for English II. He will put you to work, but it's worth it. He's a genuinely good teacher that will inspire you...if you let him!
I would highly recommend this teacher to anyone who wants to learn something. He does grade very hard, but only to motivate his students. He is a genuinely good teacher that doesn't rely on a text book to teach his classes. He will inspire you...if you let him!
Funny as hell. Great teacher. Good class. Knows his stuff. Taken his class twice. As long as you take notes in class and make sure you read the works and ask questions you will def pass the class. Highly recommended!!
His topics are intereting.
I have done relatively well in his online class. Other than the occasional group e-mail, there isn't much teacher/student communication so I can't really comment on his teaching method or his "cockiness". But it wasn't too bad overall - taking ENCII w/ him next.* *Opinion subject to change if I get a bad grade - LOL
I must say, I do not really enjoy the whole rating game of professors. However, in this case, I feel it is necessary. I can't speak for on campus classes, but as for online classes, he is EXTREMELY unclear in his directions, cocky when you ask questions, and generally a joke for a professor. Take Adams-Wallace, you'll actually get an education.
this guy is a great teacher. i got a B just because i was late the majority of the time. i would have had an A. overall, the class was extremely easy. he always went off on tangents, no big deal though. i would recommend him to anyone and would take him over if i had to.
Most assignments had some form of racism in it and his grading was very biased. I swear Mr Rubinstein himself acted undercover as a student in the discussion board ....very creepy! Plan on spending alot of time in the library. I wouldn't take this class online again, at least not with this teacher.
Not very clear on instructions or answering back during the online course. However I did all assignments early and he responded to my questions in time. 2 Papers and disccussions.
He sucks. When he gives you assignments he explains the stuff so that only another professor could figure out what he wants you to do. I took this class online and he was really rude and bad about getting back to you in email. boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Rubinstein is my favorite teacher on the HCC campus... he has a passion for what it is he is teaching. His classes are somewhat difficult, but they challenge your mind. I have taken him for 1101 1102 and Am Lit. and I will be taking him again for IDS. He knows all kinds of fun facts that he throws in to make it fun, and he is just a great teacher.
I don't like to rate professors since we all have our own style of learning. Don't choose this prof if you have any difficulty learning. I took his online class and he offered absolutely no help at all and did not respond to emails. I actually think he was on vacation the entire summer and I barely read submitted assignments. I lost my 4.0 status.
Great professor, I would recommend him to anyone taking an english class and willing to learn.
He is a good teacher. Really nitpicky about assignments, but challenging. He sometimes goes off on tangents about politics or sports for like half the class, but he does funny impersonations and is a fun teacher to have. You will learn a lot and be entertained.
Do not take him as an internet teacher. He came highly recommended in class, but was not there to help online. I have taken probably 30 courses at HCC, many of them online, had a straight A average, and never worked so hard to pull a C. I believe he is biased, and the grading is to subjective. I'd quit before I'd take another class with him.
I took english online with him and never worked so hard to pull off a C. Not clear, confusing, DONT TAKE.
Great teacher. He is very interesting and the class flies by. Don't take him if you expect an easy "A" or are a slacker; you work hard but learn a lot.
Do not take him if you want an easy A. His grading scale is harder 92 is an A 82 is a B and so on... Very interesting and entertaining guy. Starts class with random discussions which can be fun, definitely goes off on tangents.Very opinionated but fair grader. You have to do the work and read the assignments. I got an A! and he LOVES Hamlet!! a LOT
I took English 1 online. My final grade was a B, but I was missing one essay. I thought that he was a pretty good professor. The book I got ended up being the wrong version, or "slightly off", but even with that, the class was fairly easy. Since it was taken online, I was able to work ahead and I loved it. Over all, I enjoyed his online course.
Very knowledgable and passionate about classical literature! He doesn't give a lot of assignments, but you have to pay attention to the facts and interpretations of the literature, because that's what he tests on. Entertaining lectures and funny rants. He will read through and discuss everything you need to know for he exams. Two research papers.
rubinstein is the most hilarious teacher i have ever had. He goes off on a lot of tangents but always finds his way back on topic. his course goes at a good speed. do not take class lightly, read ahead and start papers ahead of time. bonus points can be achieved if you are willing to have your paper graded in front of everyone. GREAT CLASS.
Best best best!!!!! He was the greatest professor I have ever had. Had him for Enc1102 and Lit 2110. Hard but makes you so much better than you could ever imagine. I wish I could take him one last time for my last semester but it just doesn't fit into my schedule. GREAT!
What a wonderful teacher! He knows his stuff. I wasnt very interested in Lit or reading but he definately made me want to learn. Can cite Shakespere with the book closed! THE best professor I have ever had! He is a strict grader but gives very clear guidelines, so if you follow them its an easy A.
I took him for both ENC 1101 & 1102 online. Mainly essays, which he grades pretty fairly I think, Got an A in 1101 but I worked for it. Also a few quizzes which are easy if you know the material. Overall good online proff.
Great professor. I took ENC 1101 and 1102 and was pleased. Both his passion, and his no BS attitude were inspiration for me. He likes to get the class talking about various topics, but is always sure to "hit you with knowledge". I would suggest his class to anyone.
SO SO SO
Rubinstein is rediculously hard at grading and you have to write about the hardest stupidest topics in his literature class. He does not provide any help at all to students, hes to intrested in literature.
It's his way or the highway this guy does not give second chances, and is always talking about his jewish grandmother.
This class was actually a refreshing break from my other classes. We always had fun discussions not always pertaining to the material but somehow we would always end up back at topic. You do all of your quizzes online (open book) all of your discussion board posts online as well. Essays are 500 words...easy!!!!
I won't lie, he is not an easy grader for this class. If you follow his format though, meet the legnth requirements and profread, you'll be fine. You'll have to work to get an A, but class was loads of fun! He gets off topic, but it is interesting. Attending will help you write better papers because he'll give you topics to use. I liked the class.
This class was difficult. He is a fun teacher and it made the time go by fast but he really is a tough at grading papers. I had to work my butt off to get my B. I still think that I deserved an A but whatever.
At first glance, he seems to be a fun teacher who is knowlegable. He does not in fact know everything. Not very good about grading papers and is not fair to all students. I would not recommend him to anyone. If you like baseball, this class is for you, expect to learn a lot about his tangents and some literature though.
Took ENC 1101&1102, enjoyed him so much that I took him for IDS. He adds a refreshing new spin to learning, makes it exciting and you begin to look forward to his class. Very knowledgeable and entertaining, he inspires you to be a better writer and student. His tangents seem random but you walk away more inquisitive about the world around you,HOT!
"Rubi", as our class called him, is very intelligent. He is educated on current issues & displays it during "knowledge time". I loved this class. Not only did I learn a lot about issues around the world, but grammar as well. He is a cool guy with only your best interest at heart. He is cool with you as long as you show him the same respect.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Witty and not afraid to get his hands dirty. Though I see he's not one for the online teaching. This does NOT surprise me. Don't take him for an online course, he does teach in a lot of places and will be a little too busy to give you the help you need.
DISLIKE this teacher very much, the only way you will learn anything in this class is if you let him destroy your rough draft in front of the entire class. I did not learn one thing but yet he expects you to know everything and grades very unfair, not to mention he talks about everything but English, DO NOT RECOMMEND..Now I?m having to take this co
I took Rubinstein for 1101 and it was an easy course only because I could use prior knowledge from high school, in 1102 you are expected to take it to the next level with NO HELP. To add insult to injury Rubinstein will go off on ridiculous tangents, ignore the course objectives, and still find the time to be completely rude. If you want to be spok
I decided not to drop this class bc there was no final. SO REGRET IT. He belittles students which makes him presumptuous. I tried my hardest. I almost cried because of the way he lectured me during paper revising office hours. Too busy balancing teaching at UT and HCC. He should've just failed me. So I could have retaken it with another professor:(
Those who complain about Rubinsteing being to hard are probably just lazy. There is no homework. The entire class was 3 papers and the midterm and final. He pushed back paper due dates for a week to help students. He let students bring in a Intro for him to go over and if you did he gave you an extra week to turn in your paper. Great Teacher Easy A
Great teacher. Definitely keep the class awake. He can be a bit unclear about what he wants for his essys but if you go talk to him after class he is very helpful. He is really HOT! ;)Great class. Great teacher.
I'll admit he's a really HARD grader. Almost all his papers (including Final and Midterm) has something to do with researching some literary device in a story and write a 4-6 page paper on it. if you love litertaure and know a lot about literary device than you should take him. He did extend the due dates of his paper
Rubinstein is a great teacher. He goes off on tangents all the time but always brings it back around to the class subject. He loves literature and is super passionate about it. He isnt a tough grader. Thoe who say they did bad are just lazy. Ya you have to do research papers but this is college grow up. I definitely recommend A+
Avoid at all cost. He seeks perfection but makes countless mistakes himself. In class he just rambles on about random stuff and does not teach you a thing. In my opinion he thinks too much of himself.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE!!!!
I DO NOT recommend this teacher!!! He is absolutely terrible at teaching! He needs to be at a school where all the students are perfect in order for anyone to pass! I had another ENGLISH teacher review him, and even he said the guy is unclear and his test questions make no sense and most of all he is incredibly rude. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Mr. Rubinstein is an awesome guy, albeit his teaching style is debatable. Fun, interesting, and easy class. He's helpful, if you ask. He's willing to reset bad test score for you. He lets you redo a bad essay. His grading can be harsh if you don't follow the format sheet. If English is easy for you, take this class. Recommended.
Do not take this class online! The syllabus is very confusing, he does not lecture but you are expected to know how to write a formal literary analysis, know literary devices, which are not explained in the textbook. This is the first online class I have taken where the instructor does not lecture.
This guy is HORRIBLE!!! I had a 4.0 prior to his class - or should I say NON-class! There was not ONE thing taught in this class. And I'm an English major.. he based our grades on 2 tests and 2 essays without one bit of teaching or peparation! I am going to the Dean about this guy! My GPA is ruined because he didn't teach!
Awesome professor!
he is a really great guy. as long as you follow the format sheet and you write everything how he wants it written you wont get a bad grade. he dosent teach to much but you definately see improvement in your self. he will reset 1 bad test and 1 bad essay which you should not need. but there is nothing hard to undestand or hard about his class.
Funny guy. He likes to talk about current events and joke around with people. He also will help you out by resetting a bad quiz and 1 bad essay.
Just follow the syllabus, turn in essay assignments and exams on time. How hard is it really to do the discussion boards? It's not! He does have high-standards for the writing portion but you should have learned it previously in high school-this is college-duh! And he gives you what is required so its not his fault if you fail, your probably lazy.
This was an online class. Sylabus is not very clear, almost no involvement of teacher either. He does grade on time but has average to high standards. Don't expect much help if you're a slacker!
I took this class online. His syllabus is NOT clear, he grades on time, but acts as if we are in grad school. He is rude, does not reply to emails on time. I sent my essays to the writing center before I submitted them and still ended up with B's on them. AVOID IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA!!!! I ended up with a C+
Online course: Syllabus was unclear, corrections only came from essays and he either responds late or never. Most work was due in the middle of the week which you need to plan for. From what he did post, he seemed express an attitude towards most of the questions. Overall though, an easy class after you learn how he wants his essays typed.
This guy is hilarious and I really enjoyed being in his class. You can definitely tells he knows his stuff, which is important. He is tough on grading, but I feel like if you put in an honest effort, he at least tries to give you a passing grade. He's a pretty cool guy.
He is very good! I looked forward to his class because he makes learning fun. He always has a funny story. I had to work hard, but I felt like his grading was fair.
Absolutely loved this professor, honestly wish I could have him for more classes. His class isn't super difficult, you have a few essays but as long as you follow his guidelines and keep up with readings.. you will do fine. He is hilarious and goes off topic but you still learn a lot in the class. Definitely enjoyed him, gave me hope for HCC. (:
Grading was tough, but fair. Enjoyed the class overall
Grades based on how much he likes you with little to no regard of essay quality compared to other essays.
Funny teacher! enjoyed going to class. Of course theres wrighting, its english! but wrighting essays are not very hard. I was terrible at english prior and ended up learning alot and did very well. Just show up to his class and do your work on time. You will enjoy taking his eng 1101
This is by far the hardest class I've ever taken! I worked harder in this class than any other! This man is not helpful at all and is very rude! When you ask for help he only answer in short sentences that doesn't really help at all! If you're brave enough then go for it but i advise you all to run!!
Terrible professor. He seems bothered any time I ask a question. He is NOT interested at ALL in teaching the material. His instructions are vague and unclear yet when you ask for clarification he is not helpful at all. DON NOT RECOMMEND.
I do not recommend this professor. Seriously. Take my word. Run.
This guy is the worst. Seriously don't take him online. I really hope I pass this class as I have never had such difficulty with an English course. My poor GPA :(
Be ready to work!! But what an amazing teacher. Very funny will keep you entertained! Very good class. Loved it!
He is extremely rude whenever you ask a question and he didn't grade my last essay just to bring my grade down.
This was the worst instructor I have ever taken. His syllabus is unclear. He changes his points. He doesn't grade fairly, and when you e-mail him he doesn't answer back or e-mails you back very late. I will never take one of his classes again and suggest that you don't either
This guy is the WORST professor ever. His grading scale can change midway thru the semester and a 90 is NOT an A in his class. He is unclear, NOT helpful, and slow to respond to anyone. He is also condescending and rude to you if you ask questions. He does want anyone to do well in this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. AWFUL. UNHELPFUL.
A lot of the other reviews that do not seem to be fond of Mr. Rubenstein look like they have come from his online class students, but after taking him in-class for 1102 I can say that he really wants his students to learn something to take with them after his class and provides the coursework that will push you to do greater work.
Great personality. Well rounded. Does not like being asked why a student received the grade they did, doesn't like speaking about it. Good at explaining English rules. Attendance effects your grade.
Easily the worst teacher I have ever had. I have now taken plenty of courses at USF and have never had any trouble like I did with this class. Rubinstein is an extremely picky grader that refuses to explain his grading, his communication and teaching skills are terrible. Good luck to all his future students.
He was a pretty laid back guy but kind of a hard grader for papers. The reading materials can be found pretty easily online so the textbook isn't 100% necessary. He has a really dry sense of humor so discussions about the works we read were pretty interesting.
Prof. Is very tough grader, but if you pay attention in class. Work on your assignments to the best of your ability you will do fine. Hard work pays off with good grades. He knows his Literature, you cannot pull a fast one on him or try to bluff. He holds you accountable. He is one of the best Professors I have had thus far.
Does not teach, does not have lecture slides, waits for you to post to Discussion Board and turn in essays. Even the commentary on the essays were not clear and did not help my writing. Try to take any other professor. At all. Anywhere.
Great professor. You definitely have to work for your grade. Seek help from the writing lab. Also, pay attention in class and read the book. He is a pretty tricky grader but he gives good feed back... As long as you follow all of the grammatical rules you can easily pass an essay with an A. Class is always interesting and he cares about students.
as long as you do what he says you're guaranteed a passing grade.
THE MAN. Most work is done outside of class. In class is a lot of fun, we joke around a lot and he is hilarious.
He's awesome he should definitely be taken for FYW 101.
No lectures so stick to the syllabus. Very tough grader on essays and discussions. Everything in this online class is self teaching, must be very disciplined.
Mr. Rubinstein provides all the tools necessary for his students to do well. If you aren't interested in the class, or are habitually absentlateinattentive, your grade will most likely suffer as a result. No blame can be placed on this professor, as he is helpful, insightful, and enjoyable.
Very tough class. I made the mistake of taking this class online. If you do all the reading, you should have no problem passing the class. You will need your textbook.
I took this class online, and it was a summer course so it's a lot in a short amount of time. By the end of the semester it was an essay every week, but it's easy if you just do the work. Mr Rubinstein gives great feedback in grading with comments on your essays, and DB postings.
Professor Rubinstein is a tough grader but he will explain where you went wrong and he gives you a chance to rewrite one essay. His grading scale is a little tougher too like a 91 is a "B" and 81 is a "C" 71 "D"and 61 "F" not far from a traditional scale but when you are right at that cusp it makes a difference.
He is a very passionate and awesome professor. He is so knowledgeable on an incredible amount of topics. It is easy to get him off on a tangent and talking about who knows what, but you'll learn so much even when he is ranting. I highly recommend him to anyone who doesn't mind putting a little effort into your writing. It is worth it.
Very funny, will get off topic a lot with different conversations but they all come back EVENTUALLY to what one was talking about. Very tough grader, you have to work for your grade. Let him revise your essay in front of the class and you will get a letter grade better then if not, even if he does not say. Hybrid class
I took Mr Rubinstein for both ENC1101&ENC1102. Both were Hybrid. In his Hybrid courses you only have to meet once a week and typically have 1 discussion board based assignment a week. Quizzes, tests, & essays are very sporadic and he gives you much time and help to complete them. Follow the format sheet and pass. He is funny and I highly recommend.
He sounds like he's much better in person than he is online. The class was pretty boring in all honesty, he was fairly impersonal with weekly discussion boards on a new short story and 2 essays by the end of term. What's the value of world literature if you aren't going to really delve deep into the writer and their cultural background?
I got A's on the tests and discussion boards, B's on the two essays, and ended up with a B in the class right on the cusp of an A. He is totally unforgiving as he offers no extra credit or chances to revise the essays. Not too thrilled with him or the class tbh, I've always enjoyed literature but this class was such a DRAG. Would not recommend.
Rubinstein is probably one of my favorites professors I have taken so far. He is very insightful, witty and gives good feedback. He can be a tough grader, but then again he is a fair grader. Apply yourself, show improvement and he will grade accordingly. He is also super funny.
Rubinstein is probably one of my favorite teachers at HCC, he will get you ready for the next level. That being said, this was one of the hardest classes I've had and I'm going into my last semester. In class discussions are fun and very insightful. He is a really tough grader to say the least and you will not often get perfect scores, if at all
I took the class during the summer semester figured it would be quick and painless. I am not a good writer, but I followed all his instructions when it came to the dashboard discussions and essays.I honestly loved his grading system. He is specific on what he is looking for, as long as you proof read your papers and discussions you should pass.
Jeffrey Rubinstein is a good professor. To be honest, there wasn't much that was taught in this class. I took him for AWR 101 and as long as I followed the syllabus, I could pass the class. He is weird to understand at first, and he has different quirks, but overall you can't complain. You always get out of class early.
professor Rubinstein is very unique I have honestly never met someone like him before, he so intelligent and even though he teaches English every time I came to class, our discussions were always so real and open. He makes you feel comfortable enough to be yourself in class. He is so funny too which makes class better.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE! He does not offer up any lecture materials in his online classes. Expects you to mind-read to figure out what to do. Docks points for essays being too long, docks points for essays being too short, but never tells you how many words he actually expects. Obsessed with biblical-texts, doesn't go over other cultures very much.
Tough on grading, doesn't respond to questions, no positive feedback, syllabus unclear/outdated and does not teach yet expects you to know everything. Thanks for helping this 32 year old, full time job student smash her perfect GPA all because of your insane grading policies. I worked HARD on my essay and failed it. If you take him, be warned.
Some syllabus dates were wrong. His feedback wasn't very good either. He would compliment my essays and tell me there was nothing wrong with them, but I never got a 100 on one of them. His grading scale is off and it makes a difference. The only thing good thing is he gave me an A when by HIS grading scale I deserved a B. Feedback takes while.
I was so excited to take this class. I'm not even half way through the semester and I cannot wait for it to be over. I work hard on my assignments and eagerly await my grades. Unfortunately, the only results waiting for me are low grades without the feedback needed to correct my mistakes in order to learn to score higher next time.
Amazing professor with a good sense of humor. Easy class if you are responsible to go to each class and do the homework on time, which is not a lot. If you need help or any questions he will help you. I would recommend him.
Took this class online. Very tough grader and stickler for grammar. Never really gave feedback and if he did it was short and not very useful. Doesnt communicate with students unless you email him and he takes FOREVER to contact you back. Would not recommend him to anyone, I hated his class.
I took his English comp 1 class online and it was pretty easy for the most part but his grading on the essays he assigns is so hard!!! Especially since it counts most of the grade counts toward how you do on the essays.
Took him for freshman English 2 online. His grading on essays is ridiculous. He makes his mind up on your grade in the first paragraph. I spent 5 hours on one essay then spent 4 days on another and still ended with the same crappy grade! Pick another professor!!! Does not respond to emails quickly if at all. Very little feedback.
Syllabus the same for all classes Does not respond to specific questions Does not consider any opinion but his own Is totally inflexible Does not consider extenuating circumstances Focused only on grammar and his interests Does not either listen to or hear students
You have to do research to understand his instructions. He asks your opinion on literary works and when you give it he marks you incorrectly. His discussion boards are set up like assignment boards. Don't take him for an online 6-week class. Extremely vague, not helpful in trying to clarify assignment information. Difficult. Run for your life.
He gives tough assignments and homework. His instructions are very short. I guess he wants his students to figure it out. I will not recommend his class.
One of the toughest graders I have ever had. He gives minimal feedback on assignments while simultaneously taking off large chunks of points at a time. I emailed Professor Rubinstein at least 10 times over the course of the semester and never got a single reply.
Doesn't respond to any emails! Never helps if you ask for it. Worse professor I have ever taken. I regret choosing his class, I won't recommend him to my worse enemy.
Took this class online, is very unclear with grading (says that punctuation is wrong but wont mark where), failed me due to a power surge happening in the area so test did not get uploaded on time, sent him an email and he could not even be bothered with responding. Would rather gouge my eyes out than take it with this professor.
Most terrible Prof in my whole life. I can never take his course. Please don't try.
The other reviews that you have read are true. Professor Rubinstein is a very tough grader, but it helps you improve! I took his 1101 and 1102 hybrid classes, and the face-to-face time really helps. Although his assignments were frustrating, they helped me develop as a writer and college student. The readings are also amazing literature!
hes bad
I would not take this professor again. He was an unrealistically hard grader, it seemed like nothing was good enough. I had straight As up until this class and it constantly made me stressed out rather than excited to learn. Do not recommend
To be honest, Professor Rubinstein is the worst professor I have experienced in all of college. Very tough grader and will not at all work with you to redeem yourself. If you would like to stay on track with your college career DO NOT TAKE HIM. Even if you think youre a great writer BEWARE!
Although I passed his class I can say that he was strict at times when it was not needed. For example, he took points off an essay I wrote only because I added a space after the title by accident.
His class was the very first dual enrollment class I took and the reviews did not disappoint. He's a tough teacher and grader but my writing got 100x better. I went from getting 70s on essays to getting 85-90s at the end of the course and when I had to take him again for ENC 1102. If u want to improve take him but don't if u want an easy pass.
I am two weeks into ENC1102 and I can already tell this guy is going to be a pain. I've never received F's but I have gotten two this far. ON DISCUSSION BOARDS. I have met all of the requirements in the rubrics and everything. Should be an interesting semester.
The most horrible teacher to ever teach. How the heck gives an essay for a final exam and doesn't state it within the syllabus. I had other people look over his course that attend actual universities, and none of them have ever seen such a thing or met people like him. This professor doesn't give any valuable feedback on essays and assignments.
He is a nice professor and in class he's chill but when it comes to grading he is extremely tough. Some small mistake on an essay or a DB will cost you. Would not recommend someone who is not very good at writing/reading to take his class. Even though this is English 1, he expects that his students know everything with just a few hours of lectures.
This "Professor" is impossible to contact, takes weeks to answer mails and takes your grade down to a C on essays just because you put bold for the title. He is very left wing biased and will take points if you write an essay with conservative views just because he consideres it biased. All his homework is google stolen. overall a dreadful teacher
This professor is so horrible, i've always been told i was a good writer but all this professor did was bring me down with my writing and belittled me,he doesn't give you any advice doesn't wanna see you do big things in life he doesnt care at all.
He is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. First, everything you learn is from an old textbook with lots of inaccurate information. He grades so tough on every essay. The "right" answers on the online quizzes contradict whatever is said in the textbook. If he is your professor, enjoy a low grade!
Course offered no office hours for online students. Claimed I used AI on an essay, I attempted to email him (no response for 3-5 days) he graded it fairly after making me cite at least 5 sources in an essay that didnt require citations. He then failed me for plagiarism becuase a source was missing an in-text citation (it was in the works cited)
Tough grader, but you'll improve your writing significantly. Utilize resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook to excel. Attendance is a must, so stay engaged. Not an easy A, but worth it for the skill development.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. So incredibly rude and told me off for not looking at the syllabus .5 minutes after the beginning of the semester. Does not communicate throughly what he wants out of my writing, and docked points off for incredibly silly reasonings that he hardly explained to me. Just an overall bad experience.
His passion for writing can be infectious which is awesome! I learned a lot, but it was challenging at times. He is a wonderful option if you are interested in an "old school" English teacher, that is 'not' mean.
The amount of work in his class is fairly normal, 3 essays, multiple discussion boards, and one exam. However the problem comes with the lack of online organization in his canvas page, which is needed for the student to succeed. As well as a lack of clarity or directions in the assignments. Furthermore, he wrongfully accuses students of using AI!
This professor is not the worst, but he doesn't do many lectures and expects two paragraphs, so remember that is the minimum, which is not hard. Don't use Grammarly, as it will count that as a zero. Also, avoid using contractions. I don't think he gives out 100% so just watch out for small errors; other than that, it should be fine.
He thought I used AI for one of my essays. I did not have him my sources, and how I structured it. Refused to believe me even though I emailed him and he refused to get back to me until literally the last day of the class DO NOT USE HIM!
Terrible professor. Terrible instructions. Gave points off for ignorant reasons that were unclear in the overall instructions. Do not take this class.
Wrongfully accuses students of AI, very tough grader, and isn't cooperative nor lenient in most scenarios.
Professor Rubinstein was a very tough grader, and difficult to get ahold of to amend grades that seemed unfair, as he has very loose definitions of AI Characteristics, but ultimately was down to earth when I was able to reach him. I wouldn't take his course if you're looking to maximize your GPA, but he is not impossible to earn passing marks from.
DO NOT take his class. I barely made it through with a passing grade. For reference, I had a perfect 4.0 before taking this class and had an almost %100 percent in my previous English I class. He docks off major points for things not explained in the instructions and leaves you no way to improve your grade. Notorious for false A.I use accusations.
He has no class prepared, he provides no supporting material. He grades first and teaches afterwards. Rather than teaching the student how to compose in English prior to evaluate them, he assigns lectures to be analyzed. He is very strict when grading but not rigorous at actually preparing classes and teaching. He teaches to grade, not to teach.
He is one of those professors who claim everything is AI, there is only 5 essays and if he deems them “ai” you fail which basically you fail the class he won't even let you defend your self. He uses a ai detector, you can't even let people have a chance to explain them selfs! Also when you put his formats and prompts into a ai detector it says 100%!
