Very good teacher, but very hard. If you can hold out in his class, you will learn a lot!
Worst teacher ever.
I have never learned more in a math course than I have in Jeff's calc III class. He expects alot, but his style forces you to learn it or fail, it's that simple (and shouldn't that be the standard anyway).
No business teaching a beginning class. Expects you to grasp concepts he forgets to explain. Teaches out of his own unpublished text book -- unpublished for a REASON.

I feel that Jeff is one of the better math instructors here. I would recommend anyone who is not all that great with math to take him.. His notes are pretty easy to follow, but his exams are challenging.
Jeff has a different teaching approach which is good for some people. He did not spark my interest at all, and I did not feel motivated by the 12 essays we had to write. He would probably be better teaching at higher levels with more experienced math students (which he does).
I don't like his teaching style at all... I learned nothing and eventually dropped the class.
"Jeff" forces the class to use his ridiculous course pack and to come to his office hours at 7am. He makes a point of failing students who do not beg for his out-of-class help. Students must listen to stories of his personal life and play his ego games. I do not reccomend "Jeff" or his coursepack.
His class sucks!! i couldnt get anything in his class.. he is the****ty professor i have ever seen in my life.. He expects you to be of his level and wants you to compete with him in the test.. I failed this class. 80% people dropped this class and 70% of the remaining failed it...
Very good teacher. His notes are great. And he makes sure you learn everything. That's it
Completely useless. Expects everybody to suck up to him and ask for all the answers, otherwise he will fail you. He seems to know what he's teaching, but has no clue as to how to teach it.
Hard grader, doesn't return homework in a timely fashion. very helpful though.

Just Ridiculous. 12 essays, office hours from 7am-8am, he makes you buy a coursepack that he wrote because he thinks he's too good for a normal book. Makes you listen to stories about his babies instead of answering questions in class. Within the first thr
One of, if not the best math teacher that I have ever had. The coursepack that others have complained about is the best thing to ever happen to math. Its so much easier to understand than a textbook and a lot cheaper, too.
I loved the coursepacks, they were self explanatory so you always know what he thinks is important and sometimes make you laugh. Sure, writing papers sucked but at the end of the semester, those papers were great for studying. He really teaches the material thoroughly and takes time to makes sure every thing is clear.
This class is linear algebra. This professor like to tell stories and get off topic so the in class time is a waste but entertaining. The exams are super hard and the majority of the class fails them. He is not helpful with the exams and likes to make fun of the students in the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Pre cal itself isn't too hard. what makes this class not fun is the essays he makes you write before each test. 3, three-page (or more) essays before each test and only collects one of them. He's funny, and easy to get alot with.cool guy, meets with you, but it kindof takes some begging. Coursepack is nice! much better than book!
Very disorganized only given back on quiz before! Would help if he would show up to class on time. I wouldn't encourage anyone to take this class from him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM! IT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN NEED BE!
Part of the exam is writing ESSAYS about math. Completely ridiculous. His course pack is terrible and just confused me. I finally had to drop because I wasn't able to learn anything from him.
He is probably the best math teacher I've had. Overall, his classes are pretty hard but I can honestly say that i learned alot from his classes. If you need to take more math classes in your future then I would reccomend him, but if you do not need any more math classes after the class you are taking, don't take his class not worth the time/effort.
his class is hard, but he is a good teacher. always happy to be there. homework after every class, but it is math and thats the only way to get it. if your going on in math, i recomend jeff cuz he will teach you better than anyone else around him.
This was a summer calc 3 class. He used his own course pack which was very good. You must go to class and you must do your homework. Tests were hard, but not unreasonable. Excellent prof. I would take a class again from him.
While I did learn a lot about pre-calc, and then Calc when I took him a second semester, he is EXTREMELY hard. I spent about 2 hours a night on homework. I recommend him if you plan on taking a lot of math, but if you're just getting it out of your way dont bother with him. His class isnt worth the time and effort if you don't have a future in math
I hate math, but he was so helpful and understanding. Hard calss, but good at explaining things.
I enjoyed Jeff's class immensely. As many have stated, his classes entail a lot of homework, which, if you do not complete on a regular basis, will pile up. Although Jeff covered some difficult topics, I liked his high standards for us, his interest in his students, and his willingness to help. I am excited to take MAT 226 with him this semester.
If you like taking notes by hand, Jeff is not your guy. He gives you fill in the blank notes, which really annoyed me. He made me cry in his office hours.
If you're taking a class higher than 125 and aren't an idiot, then Jeff is the teacher for you!
Really strict attendance policy. Lots of homework. Expects you to pretty much have aced all previous math classes taken and expects you to remember how to do it all. Pretty interesting lectures tho. Hard tests.
He makes calculus funny. It was great being in his class, although you really have to pay attention to what he says and examples. And going to his office for help is a big bonus in his book and just in general. He's a real chill guy too.
Jeff simply loves teaching and loves math. His classes entail a lot of homework and don't expect to breeze through his tests without A. Attending Class, B. Doing the homework, and C. Studying outside of class. He is a hilarious guy and readily available for his students. Great teacher if you are willing to work.
His lectures are canned, he might as well just not be there. Hardly any time built in for questions and his fill-in-the-blank note pages were ridiculous. Probably a great professor to take if you are a math major. Otherwise, find someone else.
Jeff is a pretty funny guy and a great teacher, but if you math isn't your gig then his exams are pretty damn hard. If you work hard enough you will do well, but it isn't an easy A by any stretch.
IF you wanna leave a class knowing the knowledge pick Jeff, however be prepared to work your butt off to get a good grade.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. It can be overwhelming, but it is good preparation for future studies.
Worst sort of professor. Work hard and still not get a good grade. Says he'll work with you but then wont. Hardest class I've ever taken. Uses his own USELESS course pack. Good Luck, avoid taking a class with him.
Jeff clearly loves teaching, and most of call loves math. He is very available to his students and is overall a very genuine, funny guy who clearly works very hard. His classes are pretty demanding, but you'll walk away with a lot more knowledge than you would have otherwise. Recommended for those who don't wish to just "float by" in a math class.
Rude, dishonest, and an overall jerk. I had a lot of problems with him setting up appointments and then he would not come to the designated time. Along with his overall dishonesty and "I'm above you" attitude.
Worst teacher I have ever had!!! I am all for working hard! But it will never be hard enough for this ego maniac!! He is a jerk!! Not helpful expects you to know what he knows. Never take his class!!
Had him for Calc III. Hardest class I've ever taken, but I worked my butt off and got an A.
One of the hardest working professors out there. You will have to work your ASS off, but it is all worth it. I still remember everything.
He knows a lot about what he talks about, but he just goes to fast and too generally over material. He expects you to figure out how to solve different problems on hw based on one example in class. It seems like he goes at a faster pace than most 238 prof. It's possible to do good, but you really have to work your butt off all year.
Horrible professor, "teaches" the class by making you learn everything else where. Didn't teach me anything, had to look everything up myself or go to tudoring to have them teach me. Coarse materials were a joke, his own. His extra credit was harder to achieve then a regular grade in the class, worst ever teacher i have had.
Jeff isn't the easiest teacher. If you don't want to learn, or are interested in an easy A look elsewhere. However, if you actually want to learn the material and will have to use it, Jeff will make sure that you know it well. He is always willing to help. He's one of the best professors I've had.
Rushall is the hardest professor that I have ever had. His class is definitely not an easy A. You have to really be driven to do well in his class and be willing to work your butt off. However, leaving his class I feel that I learned a lot and have no problem remembering the material.
Worst professor ever. Course materials he made himself. No textbook. Have to look everything up yourself. You have to fill in blanks and they don't help at all on the exams or homework. I've never hated a professor as much as I hate Jeff. He's a huge jerk and doesn't help you when you ask for it. Avoid at all costs!
Jeff is one of the best professors that I have had. He challenges you and has high expectations; however, he matches these expectations with his teaching.
There is no required textbook(he uses a set of lecture notes he wrote). He tells you EXACTLY what he expects you to know for exams and if you spend a reasonable amount of time on the material you will get an A. Also Jeff is a badass
One of the best math professors I have had at NAU. Yes he is tough, however if you attend class daily and pay attention, you will have no problem understanding the material.
He definitely made the class a challenge. Sometimes the grading frustrated me, because I'd get an A on one major test but then a bad grade on the next test would bring down my class grade a ton. I still overall learned a lot and enjoyed his lectures, but attendance and asking questions is SUPER important!
Format of MAT 320W (as taught by this instructor) is based on student presentations and participation. By the instructor's rubric, you cannot pass the class by homework alone. Also by the instructor's rubric, attendance is mandatory and missing class can give you a failing grade no matter your effort and quality of work.
For this class, you pretty much just had to do the one page of miscellaneous questions he gave you and show up for the once a week class.
A really cool dude, I look forward to taking more classes with him in the future.
If you have the chance to take 320 with Jeff, take it. The class is structured using the "Moore Method", so he doesn't teach, you just work through the problems independently/with him/as a class. It's really shocking and uncomfortable at first but if you're really passionate about mathematics and stick it out, it definitely pays off.
Jeff gets a kick out of making Calculus more difficult than it already is. His examples in class are simple and then the HW problems are very difficult. If you don't have immaculate handwriting you will be penalized.
Jeff is the kind of professor that made me wish I'd tried harder in high school. So I could have got into a better college to avoid terrible instructors like him. Just the absolute worst class of my life and I love mathematics.
It was one of the most out-there math classes I have ever taken, but Jeff made the material somewhat understandable and fun. Office hours are a plus. Be prepared to work really hard. Do not, DO NOT put off doing the extra homework if you're working towards getting the extra credit. Outlines expectations for the class clearly, so don't slack off.
The class is structured in such a way that the more abstract concepts relating to linear algebra were introduced before the actual computational part. This really helped with understanding the subject as a whole. Get ready to work hard, Jeff is good to you if you're a hard worker. He really helps you work through understanding the concepts.
Jeff was one of the first professors who's tests I needed to study for, so his classes definitely require effort. However, he'll answer any questions you throw at him, and if he doesn't have an answer he'll get back to you with one. Also, Jeff is hilarious, I pretty much laughed my way through every class. Attendance is 100% mandatory.
Worst professor.
Jeff has a unique teaching strategy that made his class very difficult. He doesn't like to simply give you the answer, and makes you work hard for it. I respect him for that, and even though he makes the class difficult, he's forcing you to understand the content instead of simply memorizing things. He's not as bad as the other comments claim.
Jeff is one of the best math teachers I have had. His class follows the same structure every day and he makes the material easy to comprehend. All questions on the test come directly from homework and lectures notes. There is also an opportunity to earn a 10% grade raise at the end of the semester if you attend class, take notes, and do homework.
He will give you a zero if you dont do everything exactly his way
How to succeed in Jeff's classes: show up (everyday!), go to his office hours, and DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. He expects a lot, but you don't have to be a math whiz to do well (I got C's/B's on every test and still got an A in the class). Also he's just a funny guy. Show him respect and he'll do the same for you.
Jeff is by far one of my favorite math teachers I've ever had. Be prepared to work for your grade. Pay attention to the lectures and jeff is always there for you whether it be email or office hours. You have to put effort into this class and spend time after going over lectures to truly understand the concepts. But if you do, you will be rewarded.
Jeff was very helpful in ensuring his students succeeded in blended learning. There are daily attendance quizzes and a couple exams. Homework is optional- only 2-3 problems for submission twice a week, but the test questions are very similar to homework questions. Loved MAT137, taking MAT238 with Jeff because of his great teaching.
I had to withdraw from Jeff's class because I couldn't handle it. His grading criteria is insane, for example, if you submit your hw with your lecture notes on the wrong side, you get a zero. He was a funny guy, but calc is a hard subject and you need to be good at teaching. He had his own notes that needed to be exact and they didn't help at all.
My favorite math teacher I've had! The class is hard but if you put the time in and use Jeff as a resource it's more then manageable. I actually plan on taking more calculus because I feel I have a solid foundation thanks to Jeff!
If you put in the work, linear algebra with Jeff is not only manageable but very fun. I got into STEM because I like solving puzzles and conquering difficult material. This is exactly the content that Jeff provides. Amazing lecturer, even during a pandemic. Its a shame that I found him in my one of my last mathematics courses.
I enjoyed this class overall. The final and his multiple-choice exams were very trivial at times and Jeff was not very personable, but if you work for it is possible to pass. You have to make sure everything you turn in is exactly how he tells you to do it, though, which makes it a little bit more work than necessary.
Attendance is mandatory though the lectures aren't specific enough to be any good while doing homework. Only provides one to two examples per lecture for the homework which is much more difficult than the examples shown. Super picky about homework submissions which is annoying. Not much homework which is the only benefit of this class
His teaching style isnt helpful and doesnt give proper examples to learn from. As well as poor communication, he has no structure to help you grow. He does fill in the blank notes and doesnt do any problems live, and does not give homework answers. Would not recommend.
MAT 331 was an easy class. The lecture notes were very straightforward and easy to follow along. 70% of the grade is based only on two tests, so it might be a little intimidating, but the tests were not that hard. If you are looking for an easy one-credit class, take this class!
If you show up to class you will do fine. He has a lot of office hours and answers any and all questions you have. However, if you miss one class you WILL fall behind. He grades harshly but is still one of my favorite professors I have had so far.
I'm decent at math and did well in calc I&II, but linear algebra is hard. 3 unexcused absences and you fail the class. I had to drop after getting a 55% on the midterm. Tests are hard and you have to write exactly what he writes in your notebook or else you get a 0 on the homework or test section. Homework is way harder than lecture examples.
Jeff is one of the best professors. He has a great chance for a lot of extra credit but you have to work really hard for it. He gives you fill in the blank notes which are so nice. The tests can be tough but do the homework and youll be fine. He also has a lot of office hours and is always willing to help. He also has very funny stories!
For starters, his lecture notes are fill in the blanks. If you forget to submit the notes or submitted hw late, you got an automatic 0. He isn't flexible when it comes to life happening. I had to drive to a different state and back and asked for an extension on hw, before the hw was due, because I was exhausted. He would not budge. Do not take!!!!
I'm a straight A student in college, and performed well on the CALC AP Exam in high school. My skills in calculus only dropped through the course. I worked hard and understood the material. Jeff graded in an extremely specific way, docking points if you didn't draw a dinosaur to solve an answer, even if you still came to the correct answer.
If you love math, Rushall might be the professor for you; a friend recommended Rushall. If this is not you (like me), Rushall is a hard avoid. Check the grade distribution for Rushall's class in Spring 2021 (Google "NAU Class Grade Distribution"). 54% pass (26 students) rate vs. ~91% pass rate in other classes (103 students). Numbers don't lie.
All it takes to succeed in Jeff's class is hard work. You have to study very hard for tests and do everything for the huge extra credit opportunity. The notes are fill in the blank and as long as you do these + every hw you should have no problem doing well. Jeff is my favorite math professor and he might not be easy but you WILL learn the content.
Jeff is my favorite professor i have ever had; his lectures are amazing and his exams are very straightforward. He offers so much help for all of his students for exams and homework. Despite my lack of enthusiasm in math going into this class, he has inspired me to pursue a math minor in addition to my current degree. take This professor if you can
Class seems very understanding until you get to the HW, he is very strict on how HW is done
Jeff is definitely a 50/50 professor, you either really like him or really don't. Very heavy on homework and attendance, but very generous with extra credit at the end of the semester. Exams during the semester are reasonable, but the final exam was so extremely brutal for no reason. Would not recommend him for this course specifically, so be aware
Just follow his list of rules and you'll be fine. The course is very homework heavy but it's not as bad as the previous math courses I've taken before. Make sure to do all the homework! There is an achievable 10% extra credit on the final grade if you get it done & attend classes. It's so worth it and will help you grasp what is taught.
I don't recommend taking this class if you're already getting burned out, as this will make it far worse. There's extra credit, but its pretty rigorous, as it also requires your attendance, and never missing a hw assignment. The exams aren't easy either. He's funny and nice, but don't take this class if you have any mental health issues.
