This is an American West history course not a Native American history course, if I wanted to learn only about Native Americans I would have choosen that course.
This class is extremely boring. This guy is a wolf in sheeps clothing. The tests are purely essay and they have to be perfectly written for you to get an A. I've studied my ass off before and even written out the essay (he gives you 2 to pick from before the test) and still did bad on the test even though I knew I had accurate info.
Good professor!! Kinda monotone... but history is a boring subject. He gives you what id's are going to be on the test and essay question, all you have to do is go over the notes he gives you in class and a little from the book and you'll ace the test. Recommended
If you don't mind essay tests, Schulze is really good. I enjoyed his lectures, liked the structure of the class, and learned a lot. His specialty is Native Americans and the American West, so you learn extra about these topics. Your entire grade is based on three essay quizzes and 3 essay exams. The exams are based mostly on lecture notes.
Fairly hard class. Your entire grade is based off of essays. Be very specific in your essays with tons of examples and you'll get a B. He is very picky about grammar. He's a bit boring. The grading seems almost random. I'd turn in a poor essay and get an A and turn in a great essay and get a B-. I'd avoid him if possible.
Probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. Extremely hard grader. Tests essay based. I studied for days before the tests, even wrote out the essay and he still had the nerve to give me a D. Talks nonstop about Indians. MUST READ ALL 4 (yes thats right,4) BOOKS HE GIVES YOU TO PASS! Very slow read.
Boring class. Doesn't like to use a formal textbook--he uses some outside reading books, but you can't get the information unless you show up to his boring lectures. He docks points if you try to learn from the internet.
Best history class I've ever taken! I like his teaching style a lot. Reading the assigned books is extremely important to getting an A & coming to class as well. Final grade is based off of 3 exams & 3 quizzes. He gives you quiz questions before & 2 possible exam questions to study. 1 essay chosen at random on exam day. Grading really depends on TA
Good teacher. Great exam prep. If you go to class, listen to the lecturer, and study the exam prep, you cannot get a bad grade in this course. His TA last semester, Ariana, thought she was already a tenured professor, and does most of the grading - still managed an 'A' though. I like his text/reading selections a lot - interesting and relevant.
gives essay tests and short answer quizzes which aren't too difficult as long as you study.
Not a bad history teacher - he knows his material. I wouldn't say it's an easy class, but if you read the books and pay attention now and then in class, you should do fine. The essay prompts are given a class or two before the exam, so you have plenty of time to draft your essay if you wish. An A can be achieved with a decent bit of effort.
I agree with all the positive comments about him, but a couple things you should know: TAs do most of the grading, so how hard the tests are depends partially on who the TA is for the semester. Also, he just started taking attendance for a grade in Spring 08.
Dr. Schulze is a really great professor, very intelligent and knowledgable about his specific topics. Definately recommend his classes.
Not a bad teacher, the course is dry but over all he's an okay teacher. He tells you want you need to know and do before an exam or quiz so everything is crystal clear and you know what to expect and study for! Which makes his class pretty awesome!
Reckon he's more interesting than most history professors
I took him for 1301 & 1302. It's not your typical history class as he likes to focus on Native American perspectives as well as colonial/American views. Should be an easy A if you go to class, take notes, do the readings, and prepare for quizzes and exams beforehand. Grading depends on TA. Enjoyed 1301 more than 1302.
I'm taking his 830 class and it's packed...but his lectures are pretty much what he assigns you to read. Although you must go to class in order to pass this class. I don't recommend you coming late because his lectures take up all of the time. He is a very good teacher although will get mad when no one answers his questions...just be sure to read!
He's a really good professor. You actually don't have to read the book, everything you need to know for tests are covered in his lectures. Quiz prep needs to be prepared from the book. The grading comes from TA, which i think grades unfairly. TAKE HIM, ITS INTERESTING, I'VE NEVER FALLEN ASLEEP :)
Amazing teacher. Truly enjoyed discussing with him in and outside of class.
Grading depends on TA. TA for this semester does not grade fairly at all. Didn't mind Prof. Schulze, but hated the class because of TA.
Your grade in the class depends greatly on your TA. I luckily had a great TA in the class so my grade did not suffer. Outside reading is important for quizzes and discussion, but class lecture material is what you will see on the tests. Attendance is mandatory and should be because you can't pass unless you come to class and hear the lectures.
even though history can be very boring, his lectures were interesting. overall he was a great prof! should attend all classes and take notes, attendance taken too. but overall if you can skim read and bs in essays, you'll get an easy A! tests were MC and essay format. would recommend sharing the textbooks (esp if you can BS well!)
I had him for history 1301 and 1302, he is such a good professor, very friendly! He also makes his lectures very interesting. the class itself is very easy and does not require much outside work.. i made an A in both..
I liked Hist 1301 better. Schulze was ok, a bit monotone but he knows his stuff. Sometimes lets you out of class early :) He gives you hints of IDs for the quizzes/exams, which are helpful. Grading depends greatly on the TA tho, and I find that unfair but study and you should be ok.
had him for both hist 1301 and 1302 and wow he was seriously one of the best teachers i have ever had! would recommend him
Interesting class. You must show up & do all the readings. The TA does all the grading, but I had a great (hot, too) TA.
he is an okay teacher... grading depends mainly on ta's.. if you are good at writing then i would recommend him if not I highly wouldn't recommend him then..just be prepared for boring lectures and a ton of reading.. this class is not only cheaper in a community college but also easier
Dr. Schulze was an interesting lecturer. His doctoral work was done in the American Southwest/Indian cultures so his lectures are skewed towards that viewpoint. His tests were all essay/short answer. He gave you the essay questions in advance. He is picky about how the essays are written so it is important to write well.
Freshman year, had NO idea who I picked for my 1st hist class but he was it. Grading depends on TA bc for the 2nd class I didnt get as good a grade as I thought while I made a much better grade for the 1st one. His lectures werent necessarily the most interesting/fun but they were clear.
Take Him! The day-to-day reading is not too overwhelming. He is clear about what he wants in his essays and papers. He is a fair grader and the class itself is not overbearing on your study-time. Take him!
This teacher is amazing. You know exactly what to prepare for on his test and quizzes.
I actually had him for HIST1301 and 1302. He is a damn good teacher. Take him; He is a simple, no surprises kind of guy. You always know exactly what to prepare for, and he is clear, helpful and easy to understand. Just read and put in the work for the tests and quizzes and I guarantee you will get an A.
You will love this class if you like history. You will do well whether or not you like history, just pay attention and skim the chapters. This is a freshman class, if you put it a few hours of studying a week and get less than a B, maybe college isn't for you o_0
Had him for 1301 and 1302. He is a great professor. Focuses a lot on Indian relations, which is very interesting. He doesn't grade any of the papers or tests though, that is all the TA. Very good and interesting teacher. (:
He has a charm to him and he's funny. I don't like history, but I like his history class!
This is my favorite teacher out of all of my schooling! He is awesome, I hated history but Dr. Schultze makes it so interesting. Most enjoyable class ever, you have to take notes the whole time but its so simple because he is easy to listen to. Loved that class :)
I took both Histories from him and recommend this professor! I would take again! He is soft-spoken and can be a bit monotonous at times but he knows his stuff and I usually don't like American history but he makes it tolerable. The only bad part was that the TA grades your tests, not him. I didn't mind the reading at all. Reasonable and good guy!
Loved the class and professor. He writes the terms for the exam on the board prior to class. You only need to note these terms to do well. He gives you the possible essay prompts to the exam a week ahead. The class before exams he goes over what terms connect with which essay possibilities. Regurgitate what he says and you are golden.
This is not an easy course. It involves a lot of writing and reading 4-5 books (cover to cover) a semester. However, the TA's are usually very helpful. Teacher is VERY condescending to students. I made an A in this class, but would not take this teacher again.
Good looking. Tests and quizzes are essays. Takes attendance. Super clear and actually makes history interesting. If you simply do what he says and study a moderate amount you will get an A. TA doesn't grade too hard. You actually need to get the textbooks.
Pretty decent teacher; i really wouldn't mind having him again. He's really clear on what he wants for quizzes and exams - lectures well. Essay topics are given before the exams.
Of all the teachers I've had at UTD, none of them come close to the level of pompousness that this man has. Relies on (golden) TA to make all grading calls, so really it's a roll of the dice if it'll be easy or not.
great teacher. very clear about what he wants and what to present in essays. pretty hard grading on tests. overall great prof.
The class itself is easy, however grading is really based off of how hard your TA grades. The guy is kind of pompous. Easy class but a lot of work.
Grading can be either bad depending on your TA. All testes are essay form. The guy is pretty pompous but the class pretty easy with a bunch of work.
Everything pretty much depends on your TA, so you can't really know ahead of time how the grading will be like. However, I can say that I did not really like the structure of this class. I would not recommend taking this class.
Loved this class! Attendance is mandatory, but he is a great lecturer and it's very easy to take notes from him. Exams/quizzes are essay based, but he gives you the questions beforehand and is willing to critique your sample answers during office hours if needed. The TA does all of the grading, but all assignments/assessments are straight-forward.
From day 1, Schulze lays out his expectations and pulls no punches. The class itself is quite engaging, as his lectures are interesting and informative. He's also hilarious, to boot. Prior to every exam and quiz, Schulze tells you what key terms and concepts he is looking for. If you apply yourself and get feedback, you'll make an A no problem.
He is a very boring class. Notes were not clear at all. would just read the book as the notes. Test were just short answer and was a very hard grader. HATED THIS TEACHER!!!!
Essay tests are primarily lecture-based, so do not skip! I didn't use the main textbook and did fine. However the other books you will need to buy and actually READ to write an essay and for one or two quizzes! Not super hard, not super easy. Do-able, and cool professor!
His lectures are informative and he likes to keep things light-hearted. His style is also bombin'. Taking him again for HIST 1302 'cause I enjoyed his lectures so much. I didn't really read the textbook but was able to make high B'slow A's. He goes over topics you need to know for exams and also discusses what he wants on the essays.
If you show up to class, study and listen you will pass. I did not buy the text book and relied on hist lectures for tests and I got an A. He is, however, a real stickler for cell phones and cannot use your laptop in class. I think this is just so you will listen because his exams are straight from the lectures.
I love this guy, his teaching styles make me actually interested in history rather than falling asleep like in most history classes. He shows no bias towards any of the material he covers and he is always answering questions to the best of his ability. He doesn't assign many assignments so you must do well on the ones he does give.
No electronics in class, that includes cell phones, laptops, iPads, etc. He's a great professor, but if you don't come to class you won't pass. Tests and quizzes are based off the reading and the lectures in class. He gives out the prompts ahead of time so you can prepare for the tests and quizzes.
Schulze mainly just lectures with an occasional break in between with video clips. I would say he's alright, but grading is up to the TA. The textbook isn't really necessary, but he also assigns readings for the quizzes which you need to read. Most of his exams and quizzes are essay based, so be ready for a lot of writing.
I didn't like history in high school, but I enjoyed this class, especially his dry humor. He speaks kind of fast during lectures, but he basically gives you the prompt(s) for examsquizzes. Grading is up to the TA, but you can definitely do well if you attend class, take good notes, and read the novels. Don't try to use electronics in class though.
I really loved this class. His lectures were basic, but pretty clear and interesting. I thought he was pretty funny too. Most of the papers are over books you have to read, so get used to reading a lot in a short amount of time. I actually thought the books were interesting though. My TA's grading was easy, and our SI leader was always available.
Interesting and funny professor. I enjoyed the lectures, exams are fair. Grades are based on exams and one paper.
Schulze is a pretty normal history prof. If you go to lecture, take decent notes, read the text when you're unsure about something - you'll generally do well. 2 out of 3 exams are essay, & gives you prompts beforehand. Third exam is MC and very easy. TA grades all, so go to them when you feel you are struggling! Doesn't allow sleepingfoodphones!
Your performance is completely dependent on the TA. Our section had a pretty strict TA, so grades were not good. This class only has 5-6 assignments total. The in-class essays are timed, and you can not use notes at all. If you do not want too much HW, and have strong-writing skills, you should be able to pull around the A-B range.
Pretty good class overall. No food, sleeping, or electronics (even for note taking) allowed. He will call you out if he sees such. No ppt notes in lecture, only ppt images of various people/events. So you have to listen to him closely. Film clips used every now and again. All prompts for essays passed out ahead of time. Grading dependent on TA.
Great teacher, really knows stuff his stuff. Doesn't hand out 20 terms per class, and ties important events/concepts together instead of explaining them separately. Textbook not necessary, but does hand out paper prompts for which you'll need to at least skim the books. Exams aren't too hard, and the 2 short paper assignments are fairly easy.
Great teacher, great lectures. Assignments are time-consuming but pretty easy.
Dr. Schulze is a great professor and makes history very interesting. He is always willing to help during office hours and expects you to read and to be ready for class participation. Attendance points are taken.
If you actually do the readings, then you are solid. If you don't, you can still get by.
Amazing lecturer. Makes it clear what you need to pay attention to in class and whats essential for exams. Does review of the previous class on the next class day. Read the books he assigns, textbook not as necessary
Attendance is mandatory and they have almost nothing to do with his exams/quizzes. His TA grades the exams and they grade hard. The average once was a D-... The quizzes count for a huge chunk of your grade and consist of you having to memorize a book and regurgitate it all in 20 minutes or less. His tests are the same but with 10 mutiple choice.
This class wasn't too bad but I'm not a fan of the extraneous reading assigned. He assigned three books all of which you have to read because the quizzes and tests are free response despite a few MC. Although his lectures and his information is clear and concise, I found myself stressing about a class I don't need besides for core credit.
Its a great class to take! Dr Schulze its a great lecturer and makes history very interesting! I would like to take another class with him!
Professor Schulze is a great professor. Expect writing assignments and readings.
He is so strict on cell phones and laptops. Will yell at you if you leave class early. He does not give clear instructions for papers and in class essays. He believes that he knows all and everyone else is wrong and his mandatory history class is the most important. Do not take him
Overall, I enjoyed Schulze's lectures. He is funny at times, and he makes learning history easy and enjoyable. There is a textbook, which can be helpful if you miss lectures. Otherwise, you will only need lecture notes for tests. Tests are mostly essay based, and he gives you key terms and the essay prompt beforehand. You also have to read books.
His lectures were very interesting however I put in all the work preparing for tests and essays and still got bad grades. He would announced that only a few people got A's on tests so it wasn't his fault if we failed but obviously it was if his tests were so hard that no one could get a good score. IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA DO NOT TAKE!!
Schulze himself was interesting and passionate about teaching History, but for me History is difficult. Most of the assignments and tests are essays and you will be reading a lot of novels assigned at the beginning of the year. If you like reading history novels and are good at writing essays go for it, if not I recommend a different professor.
Pay attention in class because the lecture is best way to get notes. He expects you to have read the assigned reading beforehand. If you miss a class, don't bother asking him what you missed because its on the syllabus, and that's exactly what he will tell you. He is not afraid to kick people out of class for falling asleep or eating, so beware.
Students would appreciate if we were able to use laptops to take notes in class, as he moves very quickly during his lectures.
Get ready to spend your weekends and evenings reading the excessive books he assigns. He makes this course excessively difficult, and is a very critical professor. If I could give him a worse grade than a 1 I would.
I actually really enjoyed Professor Schulze class and went out of my way to take him again for my 2nd history credit. His class honestly isn't hard if you take notes during the lecture and have half a brain. I didn't even bother buying the textbook and was fine on exams. He will call you tf out for cell phones so just don't use it during class.
His classes really depend on the TA grading your work. Multiple choice are easy as long as you have half a brain.
Professor Schulze's class consist of lots of outside reading projects (you read 3 books, two for are quizzed over and one is a four page essay). Also his TA grades everything, and the one my class had was overly tough for a required history course. That being said, Professor Schulze is a very good lecturer who knows his stuff and is interesting.
He is a clear lecturer, but very dry. He is clear about what he expects for papers and tests so if you study it should be an easy A+ Sometimes he phones it in with movies and lets you out of class 10 minutes early instead of covering test material which annoyed me. I felt like I didn't learn enough for this class's cost. He is very mediocre.
he calls people out a lot for leaving class early/sleeping during class/using their phones. attendance is mandatory and he doesn't let you use laptops for notes even though he speeds through his lectures. you kinda have to read the textbook but most of the reading is the 3 (!) other books he assigns one of which has a 5-6 page essay
His class is what you expect college to be like. Took this my very 1st semester, and it was rigorous, to say the least. Lots of reading + papers to write +quizzes to take, and sometimes it's overwhelming. But his lectures are great, and though we all know this history he brings something new to it. Learn what the TA likes cuz that's who's grading
Get to know the TA. They grade essays, so ask what they're looking for. His lecture were fine, but he focused on the environment too much. I wanted to learn about people, and he taught about plants. Writes terms on board, so sit in front. Go to the Writing Center and SI Sessions if you want a good grade. He gives prompts, so pre-write essays.
If you are just taking 1301 as core credit don't take him the TA grades really hard and doesn't care about your grade. 6 grades only in the class that includes the final too. Not worth it if you are trying to get an A It will take a lot of work to get that A I recommend another professor if you can
Taking him just for your core credit is a bad idea. If you love history, I'm sure you would be fine, but the TA grades everything and does not seem to care about your grade at all. He doesn't let you use laptops for notes, and he lectures very in detail and very quickly. His power points are no help, just pictures. Least favorite professor so far
The lectures are super interesting, he is a good History teacher. But when it comes to grades and assignments better get to know the grading style of the TA as he is a tough grader. But mostly if you listen to lectures and take good notes, you wont need the textbook at all.
Entirely verbal lectures; only writes a few words on the board. Never uses the computer, except rarely for (non-testable) videos. Bans food, all electronics (even for notes), and only allows 2 absences. And it's a LECTURE. Has 3 required readings, AND expects you to read the dense, lengthy textbook. TA grades everything so good luck. Not enjoyable.
Awful! Have to read 3 books each around 200-300 pages after the text book. Teaching asistant is more like his personal assistant. Does not clarify any doubts will straight up ask you to go to the TA. Very tough grader. Not worth it.
Lectures are completely verbal and completely restricts use of technology in his class. You can't sleep either, or he'll call you out in front of everyone. Attendance sheet passed around during lecture, exams are closed-note essay questions. Very tough grader, wouldn't recommend for someone just trying to get the credit.
Despite the negative reviews that are on his page Dr. Schulze is a great professor. You actually learn in his class and he makes the lectures interesting. In terms of grades, watch out for the TAs. Compared to my other classes this class is pretty easy, the only thing I stressed about was the paper. I never read the textbook, just pay attention
Dr. Schulze is a solid history professor making a lot of sections interesting to learn about. Be ready to read and write. There are 3 books outside the text book that are quizzed on. Two of the exams are essay and multiple choice, final exam is multiple choice. One book you will write a paper on. You are given topics prior though.
Professor Schulze is an interesting and entertaining lecturer, which is good because Hist 1302 was VERY lecture heavy. The tests were somewhat difficult, as the TA was not always clear about what he was looking for on the essay. Very informative class in the end. Lots of reading, lots of writing.
You don't need to buy the History book if you are good at taking notes on his lecture. He has three quizzes- two over Jim Crow, and one over the book about the immigrants. They are writing quizzes, and you need to read the book, or at least skim. The exams are really easy- multiple choice and one essay. Take notes on lecture on the main pointspass
love love love this professor! i passed with an A. he only tests on the terms on the board, make sure you take notes on those. dont need to read the book if you do. only thing to read are the books, but that's the only challenge. taken him for both history classes.
He's very pretentious and treats students like children
While he asks for essays, he really wants information dumps. Jeffrey/ his TA will take off points if you're not specific enough about an event even though the paper did focus on that event. Also from the time papers and books are assigned, there is very little turnaround before due dates (I.E. 10 days to read 250 pages and write a 5 page essay).
Awesome professor! taking him again next semester!
He uses essay tests with a short (13-15) multiple choice portion. If you are in a 50 minute class period it feels very rushed and it's practically impossible to finish both if you have anxiety or any kind of reading disability. However, I do love the class overall. He's a fun and informative lecturer.
Dr. Schulze is by far the worst professor I've had. His lectures are not only boring, but also do not match with the readings. Meaning, he talks about some things that are not mentioned in the textbook, and the textbook covers material that talks about later in the semester. His tests are tough and he isn't vary concerned with those who struggle
Don't take this class!!!!!
He's a typical college professor! I saw some reviews on here that were negative. He presents you with the information through lectures. His slides don't have text on them bc no one would listen in class or even show up. Tip: Stop signing up for classes that you think are gonna be easy. If you put in the time for this class, you'll do great!
Dr. Schultze himself is a good professor. He makes history actually not completely boring. However, his TA's grading is a whole other story. My best advice is to figure out how they grade your papers (which are 5 out of the 6 grades in the class) instead of how the professor says they'll be graded. It's tough and requires a lot of participation.
He is an amazing professor and has really interesting lectures. He grades kinda hard but overall hes good.
Great professor, takes the job seriously and passionate about his topic
Schulze, while obviously passionate about history and very knowledgable about what he teaches, offloads a large amount of work to his T.A.s as far as grading and the like goes. You'll need to study heavily, his exams are infodumps and want to see you cover lots of ground AND explain it. Learned lots, but too hard for a core class in my opinion.
Great lecturer, but the grading killed his class for me. There were two quizzes and three exams, all in-class essays, and a 5ish page paper due. If you do not write exactly what the TA was expecting, your grade takes a hit. They expect a TON of detail. I could not physically write fast enough to get As on the assignments. Thanks for wrecking my 4.0
Every quiz you take will be 30 min and it will be short answer essay questions. It better be very detailed or you can expect a C.
I liked Dr. Schulze so much that I took him for both HIST1301 and HIST1302. He is a great lecturer and makes concepts and his expectations for the class very clear. He is very strict about his no-phone, no-sleep, and no-food policy and will stop class to call people out but other than that, a really solid professor. I really recommend him!!
I basically got As on every quiz and tests and short paper but I got an A- for this class in the end. Confusing and disappointed because I can get 4.0 if he can be more reasonable. Don t take this class.
really good history prof, makes it interesting and easy to follow. ta grades hard. tests are pretty easy as long as you study notes. doesn't put up powerpoints but tells you the key words you need to know from the lecture.
His attitude &course policies were very offputting to me. He drops you a partial letter grade for every missed class after 3, strictly doesn't allow phones/tablets/computers. Gave me a vibe that he thinks he can do whatever he wants. Felt like I was being treated like a high school student again. ALso requires 4 books... price adds up!
Tough grader. The tests and quizzes are in essay format. He gives instructions for tests and quizzes but they are vague and not help you discern how he grades it. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS AT UTD UNLESS ITS RELATED TO YOUR MAJOR. Its waaay cheaper and easier at Colin or Eastfield colleges. don't buy any of the books, find it online for free.
DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR SCHULZE'S HIST 1301! Grades are basically completely dependent upon essays, however, he gives EXTREMELY vague instructions and criteria and grades you extremely difficultly for not meeting those vague ideas despite this class being an introductory class. I strongly recommend you take this class at a local community college.
His lectures are great, and he points out what's important to remember for tests. There's a good chunk of reading to do. We read 3 decent sized books over the semester. The textbook isn't a required read, but it helps sometimes. Be sure you don't eat, sleep, or use your phone in class, very strict about that.
The material is easy, but the grading system makes the class exceedingly harder than it needs to be, especially for a state required course. This man acts like you're taking the class to get a phd in history. If you can avoid this class, do yourself a favor and do so.
Well let's discuss the best and worst things about Dr. Schulze. Best: Excellent lecturer. He's clear, concise, articulate, and easy to follow. And in a university such as this one, that's a big deal. Worst: Most strict, brutal, unfair grader I've ever seen. 45 minutes to write an essay with ridiculous detail. Miss even a little bit? Here's a C-.
Schulze is a really good lecturer, incredibly knowledgeable in his field, but an awful grader. Vague instructions and expects incredibly detailed essays in 30-45 mins. Huge docs in your grade for leaving out minor details. All tests/quizzes are essay based, not much chance to save ur grade. Learned a lot, but my gpa wasn't worth it
Dr. Schulze is a fantastic lecturer and has a very elegant way of conveying the material. He does expect a lot of students for the essay, but he spends the entire class before the exams going over what he is looking for on the exams and as long as you follow that, getting A isn't hard. Overall, I feel like I learned a lot from this course.
please avoid this professor at all costs. i had to take both of his history classes because he's always the only left. Lectures are boring even though he clearly knows his stuff. doesn't allow any type of electronics. doesn't upload his power points or notes online so all material is from class. TA's grade unnecessarily hard. course is essay based
The professor himself is good. I enjoyed his class and he was very informative and passionate about American history. I enjoyed his attitude and the way he taught his class. The TAs grading were weird. They grade not by the content you write on paper, but because you didn't use specific words. I like the teacher, but with his TAs, I would not.
If you want a to take a class that requires no effort, Schulze is not your guy. Schulze expects a good work ethic of a college student. His exams and quizzes are easy if you study. He gives you the prompts ahead of time. Lectures are interesting and he teaches in a different perspective. Get to know how your TA grades. TA does grade hard and weird
Not the worst prof ever but seriously avoid taking him if you can. Super strict for no reason, will call u out if you so much as glance at ur phone or doze off for a second. Impossible to meet all his essay criteria even if you study (& all grades are essays + essay-based tests/quizzes). Learned a lot in his class but extremely difficult to do well
Only been the 3rd week of the sem but Ive had to put in more work for this class than any of my upper-level courses. There are only 7 things you are graded on. Quizzes are short-answer, tests are MC, and an essay is required. Different books are assigned for quizzes and theres a lot to read. Take this class in community college instead.
He's the worse by far! He doesn't post his notes on Blackboard and just goes by so fast on the lecture without even stopping to ask questions. He grades our short answer quiz harshly for a small mistake. I would recommend taking this course at a community college.
Worst history Professor ever! He goes by the lecture too fast like he's giving a presentation or something and doesn't even stop to ask questions. He gives us like 300 unnecessary pages to read in a book relating to the topic. I'd recommend taking this class with an actual professor or take it at a Community College.
There are three novels that have to be read. All of them had either an open ended quiz or a 6 page paper. He goes really fast in lectures. Heads up: not sure if hes our only history professor but hes the only option for like 3 history classes.
He is a pretty good professor, likes to talk a lot, and tells random little facts that have nothing to do with the test. Tests are easy so as long as you search up the terms before the test you should be fine. It's obvious he is very passionate about his subject and I really like him because of that.
He is my favorite professor for both HIST 1301 and HIST 1302. You don't need to read a textbook, test info is all included in the lectures. You will need to read a couple of books, and then have quizzes over them. Jeffrey will talk about the prompts way in advance so you definitely would have time to read and prepare. Take him, you won't regret it
Not a blow off class. He makes you read 3 additional novels. Exams/quizzes are mostly essay based but he does give you the prompt ahead of time to prepare. Dont waste time looking at txtbk until he gives you the list of terms you need to study before assessments. He is passionate about history but honestly is a very rude person.
a gen ed history class with a paper in it. his deadlines were odd, but he worked with students to make them reasonable. an excellent lecturer who covered the content and some interesting historical detours. you just have to write 1 paper, its not too bad.
The absolute worst professor i've had at UTD. He will never respond to emails and expects you to know a lot of history coming into the class. Unless you want to study only history 24/7, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He goes way too fast in his lectures and just expects too much. Not a good experience at all. Additionally, his exams are worded very differently.
Rude Professor. This prof will never read his emails. I had to email my TA to get him to read his email, then did not help me and disregarded everything I had said in the email. He goes way too fast in lecture and his exams are oddly specific. Please avoid this professor.
He is a very knowledgeable professor but super boring. Lectures are unbearable and he makes the class way harder than it needs to be by making you do reading quizzes and a short paper. His tests however arent too bad as long as you understand the key terms he provides for you. Just stay on top of things and you should be good. Be ready to write.
All I really had to do was occasionally read an assigned book, to which I would need to write a short response to a series of questions asked about it in a quiz (or paper, for one). Then for tests, all I needed to do is know the key terms. Though, I feel like he graded pretty harshly cause I still ended with a B-, which is OK due to my low effort!
Professor Schulze had in my opinion, decent lectures. For an online class, it was not that bad. The test is super easy, the problem is the quizzes and essay. I have no problem doing the assignment and being prepared for short answer questions, but the grading is rough. Grading is strict with no real explanation of what you did wrong.
Had this professor for 1301 and 1302, I would recommend just taking it at a cc. Will be cheaper and less stressful than this course with this prof. There are 3 quizzes, 1 short paper, and 3 exams that make up your grade. In order to do well in this class, you will have put in a lot of work and that will easily eat up your time during the semester.
Professor Schulze was generally good, though much of the class was based upon essays covering books about the subjects taught in class. The difficulty in this class came from reading the required material and formulating an essay response - otherwise the lecture content was fairly straightforward.
I regret not taking this class at a Community College. This class was the harders I have taken, not even my major class are this hard. He gives you books to read and you need to do essays they are hard on grading he doesn't believe in perfect 100 scores on tests or essays so hardly you would get a 100 on the essay.
Not great, but definitely not bad. His main con is that he talks extremely fast and doesnt allow laptops in his lectures. I recommend exchanging notes with your peers so you don't miss anything. You read 3 books, they arent bad and u only read 100pgs each. 3 exams, 3 quizzes, 1 essay. He tells you the exact terms and prompts a few days before
Excellent choice! He makes you read books in order to answer quiz questions, and it's clear he is passionate about history and will make you work for your grade. As long as you put in the work, you can ace his class.
Unless you really like to write history papers, youre better off not taking Schulzes class if you can avoid it. Otherwise, his class isnt all that bad, he does, every now and then show a historical movie or a clip of one, just to spice things up. His list of key terms does come in quite handy, but to succeed, you MUST read the assigned books!
He grades tough and there were few assignments (4 quizzes and exams and a couple papers, I believe). However, he is very knowledgeable about Native American history, and he is a skilled lecturer. He also uses media well, keeping a good balance of video and regular lecture. Despite how difficult I found it, it was a good class.
Professor Schulze is an effective lecturer that provides direct exam answers in his lectures, all you have to do is listen. I highly recommend writing down the key terms and paying special attention to those terms as Schulze will state, almost word-for-word, the exam question during his lecture. Grab the textbook, there are terms in there, too.
Only choose this professor if you're fine with reading hundreds of pages from textbooks for writing prompts. There is 1 assignment, 3 quizzes, and 3 exams so if you fail one you're kinda done for the rest of the semester. Very strict with writing prompts. Suffering from this class.
Literally the worst history professor your could ever get. I asked him one day after class if he could put some words down on his slides because he goes too fast. He thinks a 6 page paper is short and expects you to know a lot about history to begin with. Reading 300 pages of nonsense is also requiredSuper terrible experience taking his class
He is fair. Makes the lectures interesting as well. I think the assignment details are obvious, but if you're not exposed to much history based writing practices, you may struggle.
He is a chill professor, however, if you don't attend a class you miss a lot of material, and throws a fit when you don't show up if there's bad weather. There was no set textbook but we had to purchase 5 books to read throughout. There are only grades for essay exams over each book, and the final is a paper, so you really need to do well to pass.
Professor Schulze was a really good professor, his lectures were clear and very straightforward. His exams were not that bad, if you pay attention to the lectures then the exams should be pretty easy. There was a lot of reading and there are corresponding quizzes and papers but he gives the prompts ahead of time so you have enough time to prepare
Super easygoing guy. Lectures are straightforward, interesting and also entertaining sometimes. Show up, do your work, and you'll be golden. Great professor :)
Overall he was a decent professor. However, there was no "textbook" as there were 4 required books to purchase and lots of writing assignments based on these books.
Nice professor but doesn't make learning easy. He doesn't allow note taking with electronics in his class. To make things worse, he posts no notes online, goes quickly through the content, and the slides he uses aren't helpful. Plenty of reading too (We read 3 chapter books). The class Discord/GroupMe really saved me and will probably save you too.
The textbook for this class is completely useless because it does not prepare you for the exams. Better off using the lecture slides, quizlet, and wikipedia for study material. He speeds through his lecture but has a good understanding of history. Be prepared to write 3-4 short papers with lengthy page requirements.
He is nice but the exams are based off of the lecture so the textbook doesn't help since the questions are specific. He talks fast and you aren't allowed to have laptops so whatever you write down is really all the study material for the tests. He also doesn't make anything available outside of class (notes).
Easy class if you take good notes.
Professor Schulze is a professor that deserves 5 points. Sure, he might be a monotone professor, but as long as you take notes that are on the lecture (and skim through the textbooks), you will be guaranteed an easy A. Only downside is when TAs grade your written quiz and essay, as they can be biased and unfair in their grading.
he likes lecturing and often gets off topic an behind. the graders can either be easy or way too tough. there is six different graders by last name, get a bad one and you are screwed
Please don't take this prof. He doesn't care about students. He is there to make life harder for students and nothing else. Class lectures are super fast and boring. Restricts from using electrical equipments, so note taking is by traditional paper and pen. Assignments are toooooo much. Please everyone, you have others imp subjects to worry about.
Intense course load for a history credit. TAs are way too harsh with grading. Few papers, but the readings are lengthy. Read ahead of time and attend lectures. They are not posted online, and quizzes are based on lecture notes.
Proff's lectures are very good. We have had to read long two books so far. If you put in the work on ur quizzes, u will do well. However, some of my classmates who don't put in the work or cheat end up with a low grade or zero. The students who left bad ratings prbly got caught. The discord is helpful, but the messages get leaked to the prof.
He knows people are just in the lower level history classes for their core so he doesn't take the class too seriously. Super laid back and makes the material interesting enough. Took him for honors and all it did was add an extra book report to his normal history class. Overall super easy, only a couple papers and online exams.
Professor Schulze is a great guy. His lectures were pretty interesting. However, this class was horrid simply because all the grading is done by the TAs. Assignments are based off last names. If you get the bad TA like I did, good luck. Many complained about the same TA. The TA graded way too harsh and made this class so stressful.
While the class was doable and I was able to leave the class with an A. The work was not worth it, especially saying it was an environmental history class. Be ready to read a book every 2 and a half weeks and then have an essay on it. Also, lectures after the midterm are pointless because there is no final test, and even he admits it is pointless.
Overall, he is an amazing professor! My only advice is to go to lectures. He goes over the key terms that you need to know for exams, and the answers for them are nearly word-for-word. Though the syllabus says it, the textbooks are not mandatory if you attend class. I was able to get through this class with an A without having to read it.
His lectures are nice, but some of his TA's are just horrendous. They don't even read your work but give you a bad grade anyways. Probably 20 people complained in order to get them to read our essays. Overall, not a bad professor but his TA selection criteria needs some work.
Please don't take him! His tests have about 25-28 questions, with a strict 30min time limit! Say what you want, but that's tough! I love History, but this guy makes it 10x harder for no reason! The worst part the class is that the only assignments are Exams and Essays. If he gives a quiz, you have read an entire book, and write about it under 30min!
Tests were easiest part since it's online+at home, so you're allowed to use eLearning/Google. I never actually had to study. The papers (write a 5-page essay on a book) are the most time-consuming part of the course, there are 2 total. Had an all-nighter cause I procrastinated. He does require that you don't use laptops in class.
Class is way harder than it has any right to be for a core curriculum class. Electronics aren't allowed in lecture. There were 4 different textbooks required, with tests based solely on the textbooks. TAs were inflexible with grading, and the prof wouldn't get back to you in a timely manner if you complained to him. Avoid this one.
Super easy class. Got A's on papers without even reading the books and got A's on exams without reading textbook or attending lectures. Exams online. TA's can be difficult graders, just write quality essays (basically just yap). Prof Schulze is actually passionate about the subject which makes lectures fine. Short lectures (40 mins).
The class was easy, but he doesn't allow you to take notes on your laptop. The slides aren't uploaded and don't have any actual text material on them, just pictures. You are forced to attend a TA lecture once a week and that counts towards attendance. Quizzes are over books, one essay over a book, and tests are 25 questions in 30 minutes.
Class was super easy with minimal effort! Never got below a 96 on any exam/paper. Never attended virtual lectures or read any books the papers were on and still got A+. DO NOT take Ang Li as your TA. They gave Cs while the other 2 TAs gave As. TAs grade papers. Other classmates regretted having Ang Li as their TA. I took this class over the summer.
It's clear that he's very informed and passionate about the subject. He doesn't allow for laptops during lectures so you have to hand-write your notes. He doesn't post his lectures online either so to learn the content you have to attend the lecture or read the textbook. Grading done by TAs, so hit or miss. Didn't really need the textbook though.
Lectures are decent, but grading can be harsh depending on your TA. Staying on top of readings and using unstuck AI for exam prep really helped me succeed in this class.
It is super lecture heavy, but secondary lectures help to get a grasp on the subject, and as long as you take notes and review before the tests you will be fine. There are a couple of papers to write, but they weren't long and the material was easy to access and comprehend through research and the books.
This professor goes over everything that is in the exam (some you need to search up). Gives good lectures but is hard to follow at times. Very passionate about the subject. Tests are extremely easy, and he releases the key terms before the exams, but the 2 essays might be graded harshly depending on the TA. Don't be on electronics and no sleeping
He's good at lecturing, but very unclear about what he expects in his papers. He gives only 6 assignments that will make up your whole grade. He assigns 3 books in total for reading. He lectures straight from the book. He gives out bonus points for exams on a random day if you attend class. The 1st exam was really hard, the 2nd one was better.
Class is easy but at the end of the semester I was 1/700 points short of an A and this mf didn't let me do anything for it.
This professor was one of the worst i've had yet. No technology in class and he WILL call you out. He does not post any notes so if you miss a lecture you're on your own, hopefully your classmates are helpful. He assigns books for this course that have nothing to do with the course material for essays and will grade harshly. good luck.
Six assignments: three tests, two essays, and one quiz. How you do in this class depends on which TA you get. I got unlucky and ended up with a TA who was always late to put grades in, so I couldn't use the feedback for the next assignment. Tests were terrible; TA told us there would be multiple correct answers and to just choose the best one.
Wasn't a fan of his lectures, they were quite hard to follow & take notes. No technology allowed in class only paper notes. Tests were hard. Wasn't clear about his expectations for the essays & grades harshly. The essays are 4 pages long & I felt like I didn't have much time to write them.Spent more time on this class than any of my other classes.
No PPTs, no technology allowed in his class. He only talks during lectures, and it is not easy to write everything. TA's will go over the terms and important info, but his class is the worst I have ever taken. I never had a professor who would not post any notes online or even during lectures. He talks all of his lectures and presents pics(no help)
All electronic devices are prohibited in his class even for taking notes and he does not provide any materials like his notes to study for quizzes and exams. You have to rely on what you were able to get from him in the classroom and the books.
The only professor whose lectures I don't fall asleep to, ties in Native American perspectives you don't typically hear about. Gives the relevant vocab terms for each lecture, so just focus on those and you'll be fine on the exams (which were super easy, straight MCQ vocab). Papers are graded very leniently, the no tech rule isn't a big deal imo.
I guess you have to have an interest in history to be able to pass this class. No electronics are allowed, his exams are lengthy, and there are no slides or notes that he gives out. You have to take notes on what he says in class. (he reads off of book too) also do not buy the book, I literally didn't use it, and it's just sitting there brand new.
His class was so easy! His lectures were easy to follow along with, and his exams weren't that hard. There's quite a bit of reading involved but nothing too crazy.
His TA sucked. Lectures were kind of boring. Before exams he posted a list of key terms so study that. Buy the textbooks early bc you need them for the writing assignments. Cool guy to be honest. Just a little boring at times. Go to the secondary lectures because they take attendance and it's 10% of your grade
So many papers. So many. I probably wrote more for this class than my rhetoric one.
he doesn't allow any electronics in class like phones or notebooks. also his notes have only pictures and no words or sentences, so u have to like summarize what he says, so it's very difficult.
Avoid this teacher
Not good Prof
Avoid in any manner
Shows favoritism and has Bias for minorities
You won't pass tough grader, does not have time or give any feedback on time but grades hard
Shows arrogance and treats students poorly
Unprofessional demeanor, inability to teach core concepts to students
Unapproachable Demeanor, displays a condescending attitude can negatively impact the learning environment.
Excessively discussion about his accomplishments, unpleasant or apathetic attitude
Tough, Ramble during lectures, assign excessive busy work without engaging with students
Rely solely on PowerPoints, ramble during lectures
Major red flag, AVOID at any cause!
Criticizing and shaming students, ignores student questions
AVOID at any cause. Doesn't respond to student questions or concerns. Grades shows a lack of care for their students'
Don't take this professor for any course
He doesn't let you use any technology in class, even to take notes. If you have an accommodation to use tech anyway, be prepared to let the whole class know. He will stop class and ask in front of everyone for you to put your laptop away. He's very egotistical, and it really affects his teaching and students.
Wouldn't recommend this professor for any course, please find alternative
Grade was touch and not willing to talk to students or listen to them
Has a strong personality and that affects you in class and seems egotistic, thinks every student cheats on his class has repeated disturbing comments on students behavior and it really affects his teaching and students and also the reputation of the College to an extend.
He displays a shows disdain and some times has condescending attitude can negatively impact the learning environment. Create a large barriers to communicate and some times his act could be combative and the overall experience for his class was unpleasant. Never had this with any professor in this college. Surprised he is still around.
Lack of enthusiasm and subject knowledge, Very unfair grading. Students easily become disengaged, and their confidence drop quickly, and felt dread going to school due to this professor
Zero commitment to their students' success and an inability to engage students. Really doesn't encourage questions from students, and is often unavailable to help students nor hold any office hours for helping students and their success.
Created a sense of mental distress that lead to depression and trauma. Created stress and had to go for Stress-reduction sessions to build my resilience against anxiety triggers. Pick a different teacher if you can at any cause.
He thinks every one is using AI to cheat in class. This creates a hostile and stressful classroom environment for everyone, including those who are innocent. Thinking of filing a formal grievance with school management and guidance counselors. Puts school reputation at risk, Not worth to take his class at all.
Had a MENTAL BREAKDOWN and Outburst and accuses the class of cheating and threatens to discard your scores. He insisted that he would fail the entire class, claiming that his students used ChatGPT for assignments, which I know for fact that is not true as I didn't.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Lack of competence in technology and hates technology and doesn't like students taking notes via computer. Surprised why one would even willingly enroll in this professor's class
PLEASE AVOID AT ANY COST. You don't disserve it, one of the worst class I have have ever taken in my life. Still old school and doesn't prefer technology at all.
The professor just lectures and lectures are long and brutal, lot of time I felt very lost and confused and later found I was not the only one feeling this.
pls do not take schulze bc he doesn't allow any tech and very egocentric. also, his ta are even worse because they grade ur essay harsh plus no curve or extra credit, so if u take him, he will ruin ur gpa.
Please take different professor for this course if you can, this would help you avoid unnecessary headaches in his class
Doesn't explain the material well and his lack of organized skills and leads to confusion
So bad, thinking of complaining to the dean's office or student services.
Please go for alternative teachers for similar course and you be better off. Else you would regret your decision at the end of the course which will be very late.
Poor professor quality on book assignments and assessments, course becoming a nightmare than helping you to learn new things and add value to your time spent on learning.
Please take different professor and worth to wait for another semester if you don't have another professor for the same course
He's definitely one of the professors that I found a bit odd. From my experience he's ok. However, he doesn't allow tech at all which I found a bit strange. However, I'm from a country where I did that for majority of my life. He's quite knowledgeable and passionate about the topics he talks about. I probably got lucky because my TA was very good.
TA was 1000 times better than the teacher himself. One of the worst teacher to be coached or educated.
I've never left a review but... save yourself the trouble if you dislike reading. Lectures are alright, nothing to worry about but do note there's ZERO electronic usage. He will call you out if you have a laptop, phone or even an airpod in. I despise the readings in this course, awfully disinteresting. Mandatory secondary lectures too.
Very few grades & 2 4-6 paged papers over 2 books. Didn't use the textbook. Doesn't give any material online & only gives a list of terms to study for the tests & only reads off the textbook for lectures. He doesn't grade anything either so your grade depends on your TA. It also takes a while for grades to be put in. IMO too hard for a core class.
Doesn't allow electronics during lectures. Like c'mon I could be using that time to do some other HW assignment I have. I understand why he wants that implemented, it just sucks for the students.
I want to say I loved this professor, the lectures were great and I loved everything that was taught. However, I feel that most people will not, he is super lecture heavy and will not allow computers or online notes taking. If you do not like these requirements or if you don't like the actual material I would not recommend him.
The class is only graded by attendance, two quizzes, three exams, and two short papers. Dr. Schulze is a tough grader for the written assignments, but he provides detailed rubrics ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect. He posts key terms for the exams ahead of time as well.
Exams are difficult and tricky, even the TAs complain. I know people who studied hours and still got 0s becasue his definitions of many historical concepts are vague in his lectures
I do not recommend this guy. Can't use computer during lectures. Exams aren't easy and has some written assignments too. Lots of reading, including outside of class. Fairly tough grader imo. I didn't expect this class to be a cakewalk by any means, but for a core history class it was tougher than I thought it would be.
The professor knows what he's talking about, and there are no issues with him as a professor. However, some of this teaching methods could be modified, and there is way too much reading for the class. Do not take this class if you have a full schedule, are enrolled in a dual degree, have an additional major or minor, or are working a part-time job.
The course BREAKS my 4.0 GPA. He does not allow any electronic devices. 3 Exams, 25 questions with 100 points. His lectures are fabricated, though. Three books to read. Be sure to memorize his lectures; otherwise, you will get a low score on the exams. If you are interested in Texas History, read books other than taking this course. RUIN YOUR GPA!!
