Not so great. Tests were terrible, incomprehensible questions.
Outside of class, the professor has a hard time answering questions in a straight forward manner. He responds in an overly terse and defensive way. Although attendance is not required, daily quizzes are conducted using i>clickers (a needless expense). His tests are awful -- created to trick, not teach. He reads directly from Power Point slides.
Going to class was completely pointless except to take the daily quizzes with the i-clicker. You learn more by just reading the pp slides and the book on your own. His famous words "we'll go more into that later" and he never does. The only advise I have is to read the chapters for the tests over and over and know every single detail!
He reads directly from slides, really fast paced. In recitation he appears defensive when answering questions. However in office hours he was always friendly and did his best to help me. I worked really hard in this class. With the exception of the last test, they weren't unclear or unexpected. The ppts came right from the book.
Singer is for those who know their stuff already. he is really interested in cell bio but he does not teach it well. you MUST read the book to pass the class, his quizzes are tricky and sometimes have more than 1 right answer. I would only recommend him for people who know their cell bio VERY WELL. he is kinda funny, but his jokes fall on deaf ears
Dr. Singer is a cool professor. He has a great sense of humor and lots of experience with this topic. His class is hard, but what would you expect of molecular biology? He quizzes and tests based on his lectures, so ATTEND CLASS, take GOOD notes, and supplement what you don't get with the book and you will pass just fine. Overall, A+ prof.
I love cell biology and Jeff bored the pants off of me. On his tests he abbreviates protein and complex names which can makes his midterms look like a dyslexics version of the alphabet. I worked my ass off for a B and came away entirely dissatisfied.
He is extremely knowledgeble and truly loves biology. While attendance is mandatory (daily quizzes are 20% of the grade) and lectures are overwhelming, there is a possibility of extra cerdit (apprx. 1/2 a letter) and he will answer all questions. Exams are challenging. Despite it being 300 lvl class he does not treat it as principles. Not an easy A
He's a good instructor. He has worked out most of the exam issues from previous classes. He does a good job preparing you for molecular and microbiology. Most of his exams come directly from his lectures and powerpoints so save yourself some time and study by recording his lecture and go over it until it makes sense, this is what I did to get an A.
Jeffery teaches a very difficult class. There are many slides and tons of information in his powerpoints, and he talks faster than any teacher I've had. Exam questions are very tricky, you must know the material in great detail. I had to spend a good 18 hours a weekend to get an A in this class. We only had two days between exam3 and the final=/
Excellent teacher! Jeffrey Singer takes a difficult subject and pares it down to the essentials. His lectures are just him reading off the slides, but he only tests on information contained in the lecture so I never had to open the textbook, I just studied the slides prior to each test and got an A. Easiest Upper Division A I ever received.
Jumbles his sentences together. If it wasn't for reading the slide after, I wouldn't know what he had said, he reads straight from his slides. Tests were tricky and the final was joke. His grad students even thought the final was tough!
I have taken Singer for 334 and 336 and so far has been the hardest two classes ever taken...I have spent countless hours in the library going over notes slides readings and nothing seems to make the tests easier. tests are ridiculously comprehensive and he doesn't offer much help when I have gone to him for study tips or anything for that matte
I took 334 and 336 from him. Got an A in both. Don't bother reading the book. Record the lectures, print out the slides, take notes on the slides. The only times I studied were 20+ hours over 3-4 days prior to each exam. He does expect you to remember a lot but he gives it all to you IN THE LECTURE. If you can't get a B you're studying poorly.
He can be a bit brusque with students, which probably rubs some the wrong way, but overall he is helpful and will answer questions during office hours. The material he tests is from the lectures, not the textbook. Show up to every class to bank easy points on quizzes, then you have more room to make mistakes on the tests. Lectures are informative.
i had him for 334/336. He is tough, sometimes really arrogant and refuses to be wrong. but at the end of it, all of the hours, tears and notecards, i put into doing well, has made every other BI class significantly easier. He does want you to be successful, he just isn't going to hand it to you.
Molecular is a difficult subject. Somehow, Singer makes it harder. Lectures are an onslaught of fast talking with no time for discussion or real questions. He includes far too much detail, he just keeps talking, nonstop. Don't be surprised to see some random minutia on tests, very nit-picky. He is Very smart, but this class will not inspire.
The lectures were a bit tough to follow at times, but if you go see him during office hours, he'll answer any questions you have and go into detail so you really understand the concept. I recommend reading the book to get a more complete understanding of the material because the exams test more general understanding rather than the specfics.
This is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. I found however, that by attending every lecture and recitation and coming frequently to office hours it is possible to survive this course. Singer wants for his students to be successful and is willing to spend time outside of class clarifying difficult concepts. I recommend this prof!
This class took as much time as O-chem but it's more rote memorization. Singer lectures very, very quickly. Take every quiz, and look over your notes for each quiz. The quizzes will save you.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Based exams only on lecture material and what he voices in lecture. Textbook material is helpful but often times the material in the book doesnt even help with what he mentions in lectures. TAPE RECORDING heavily recommended. NOT helpful at office hours, he is stubborn. If u want a bad grade take this class.
I recommend pre-reading before class, as the lectures can be unclear and hard to follow. Sit up front, he doesn't talk loud or repeat asked questions. The tests are fair, and tend to be more memorization than critical thinking. He is passionate about biology, however that doesn't seem to translate well to him teaching it.
went taking this class not very interested. intense calss with lots of info thrown at you every day. but Dr. Singer really is helpful during office hours. tests are hard but fair. daily quizes are stressful but will help your grade at the end if you do reasonable well. go to lectures AND office hours - you will learn something out of it.
Ugh. This class is VERY memorization heavy. Singer is highly knowledgeable, but he is monotonous and his slides are poorly structured. A lot of your grade rests on remembering small details. Daily iClicker questions. If you can take this class with any other professor, I would.
Dr. Singer expects you to work hard and understand the material. There is some memorization involved. You can't talk about the material without knowing the stuff involved. This is a great class, but it isn't an easy A. The clicker questions will save you!
Great professor. His PowerPoints are all you need; don't bother reading the book unless you have extra time. Exams are very fair, straight forward. Go to class and collect dem quiz points - extras add up and bump your grade! Oh yeah, know all the details (no matter what he says)! Smart dude, glad to have had the chance to take his classes.
I took Molecular and Cell Bio with Singer and he is fair. He tests straight from lecture, no surprises. I got A's by printing out his slides and studying them well. Also study lecture slides before the clicker quizzes in lecture. Quizzes will save your grade.
I would recommend a different instructor if you rely on being able to use the book to really understand the course. I actually felt like I had the wrong book most of the time because his tests didn't parallel the book at all. Lectures are monotone, super fast, and difficult to hear from most of the room. I questioned my major after this class.
One of the worst classes. His lectures are ungodly. They're monotone and drawn out. He constantly repeats "and we'll get to that later" when referring to new topics and never does (but expects you know for exam). He pulls questions for his exams out of thin air & doesn't even release the average. He just boasted about the top score. AVOID!
Got straight A's in general bio and lab, took this class and failed it. Hardest tests I've ever taken in my life, horrible lectures, super nit picky questions.
He doesn't know how to lecture, not even to people who are interested in the material. His slides are often a mess and you have to piece together information dozens of slides apart to make sense of it. 85% of his tests are easy, the other 15% of the questions are just poorly worded. He never admits making even minor mistakes.
Very hard class. Tips I wish I had starting the class; print color powerpoints to write notes on in class, skim reading before class and powerpoint or you will not get the very tough clicker questions and above all...... RECORD HIS LECTURE or you'll be lost on what to study post-lecture because the material has no end.
Before this class, I was a 4.0 microbiology major. His lectures are ridiculous, and he goes through 100 slides in ten minutes. There is no retention, there is no teaching style. When more than half of your class is failing, maybe the students aren't the root of the problem. Attend for the clicker questions, they really will buffer your grade.
Goes through 100 sides a day and doesn't focus on concepts. Ask test questions that are about specifics when he really says that its not what he is looking for. Test are extremely hard and when asked about the average, mode or standard deviation he says its normal! Will never take again received my lowest score in any class I've ever taken.
Make sure to consider carefully before taking this class. I'm not saying i'm right and he's wrong. His class is not inspirational, and he is not a good lecturer. He will potentially lower your interests in learning. If you consider taking his class, make sure to not lose your interests in biology and in learning.
I agree with the below statement. Maybe I'm just not up for it, but have done reasonably well up until this class. I don't feel like I retained much knowledge from this class and left feeling discouraged from continuing on in this major.
Singer is a smart, nice guy but that doesn't translate well to being a good teacher. He lectures too fast and exams often have both confusing and very nitpicky questions. I would not mind either If he applied a standard curve instead of basing 100% on the top score. I ended up with an A but am still avoiding taking him again.
Seriously one of the worst professors I have had. His lectures are PAINFULLY boring and I had originally been excited to take this course as my major is micro and molecular biology. Some of his test questions honestly appear to develop out of thin air. He expects a deep understanding even though he doesn't provide the resources for this. Youtube!
I'd say avoid him if you can. Many test questions were way too specific. It was like he wanted us to memorize everything from lecture to the smallest and most obscure detail rather than understand the main concepts. He moves very fast so it's difficult to keep up. He's passionate about the subject, but a terrible test giver.
While I have massive amounts of respect for Dr. Singer and his research, I think his lecturing falls short. There is ample material covered in minute detail. Instead of focusing on the bigger picture, the class is left memorizing every protein involved in every pathway. If you are good a memorizing, you can pass this course.
Dr. Singer is a really nice guy and very helpful during office hours, but his tests are KILLERS. He tests on the most obscure details, so prepare to memorize everything. I often made around 200 notecards for each exam. Clicker questions will definitely save your grade, so make sure to never miss class. Be prepared to study hard!
Decent class. Centers on lecture slides available on D2L. Material is hard and abundant: 1400 detailed slidesterm. Must know names and interactions of tons of specific things on tests. He hates memorization-do it anyway. Very little repetition, read slides in lecture, but knows the material very well. Grades fairly-iClicker saved mine. Ask Qs!
This class was so tough and Singer was very unfair. Exams were random and tested on the smallest details. Never posted class averages, cause he knew everyone did bad. Recitation quizzes too hard & did not test on problem set problems. Grading was inconsistent between TAs on these quizzes. wORSE class avoid him if possible! it will bring gpa down!!
Took previous class by same professor, and didn't do that well. I half expected to do well in this class since I got used to his testing style and teaching style, but I don't think it happened. Not going to take another professor by this professor unless required to.
I've taken bi 334 and 336 with this professor. He has clear expectations but expects you to memorize A TON of information for each test. Still, if the class is doing really badly he will sometimes drop an exam or boost quiz scores. Overall it was stressful but I did ok.
People rate Singer poor because he teaches a hard class. It's as hard as o chem and people seem to think they can waltz in and nail it. You will have to study and his tests reflect his expectation that you know the material. That said, he understands and grades fairly. Even lets you earn extra credit. He will prepare you for 400 level classes.
Not the best lecturer, but the man's a genius. If you want an "easy" A, take Stedman. If you want to learn molecular biology take Singer. He expects a lot from his students because he expects a lot from himself. He can be a little gruff and quite intimidating but if you get to know him, you realize he's a very kind person who wants the best for you
Cancer biology. Excellent course for people who have completed most of a molecular bio or biochem degree. Very hard subject and he expects a lot from students. If you take this class, DO THE READING. If you stay caught up you'll do fine. Two research projects, if that's not your thing avoid this class. He's a little scary, but is actually very nice
I really hated taking this class. It was a major source of stress for me. I don't regret it though. It's terribly difficult, but it really does prepare you for higher level classes. Biology was never my strongest subject, but after taking it with Singer and working as hard has I had to, I'm more confident about the subject. It's tough, but worth it
Dr. Singer covers a lot of material very quickly. If you take one piece of ADVICE from this review to PASS the class: read the book thoroughly before lectures, pay attention in lecture, and don't miss a single clicker question (anything over 75/75 is extra credit equivalent to a test question!). He's smart, but very strict and his tests are insane.
MUST read book before lecture, as lecture highlights and complements the book material. Lectures are fast paced, and detailed. Singer previously taught graduate level courses at Brown, and treats this class similarly. Offers extra credit & is INCREDIBLY helpful in office hours. Take the class to learn, work hard, and I'll definitely be worth it :)
The tests are very hard. If you're a crammer you won't pass! You should be willing to study the material for a few hours a day! Make sure to know the material before class so that you can ace the clicker questions as they are 25% of the grade! Very rewarding class to take!
Let me start by saying, this class is hard. The exams are pretty hard. But if you really want to get to know this material, this is the teacher to take. I didn't even get the book because everything he tests on is from the slides. Get the most out of recitation and clickers, if you do well life is easy. I had over a 100% coming into the final.
It's a lot of material, but it's fascinating. His lectures are really difficult to grasp the first time around so reading ahead is a must and RECORD AUDIO! After relistening to lectures while following along with the powerpoint slides, I got an A on the first exam. Stay engaged and don't have your head in your notebook - listen to what he says.
Worst professor I've had at PSU. BI336 was impossible for me. I studied for two weeks before midterms, read the book, went over lectures, did practice problems, and still failed. Going to his office hours does not help because he just tells you to study harder. Not very nice. He's very intelligent and makes it obvious. Avoid if you can.
This class is so hard. I read every single chapter in order to pass. His lectures ate fast and confusing. He is really smart I think he thinks everyone is add smart as him.
Dr. Singers class is HARD but awesome. He is incredibly intelligent, and will instill great study habits into you. It's a fast paced class. I didn't do very well in his class, it was really hard but the study advice he taught me has made my other classes like cake! Even organic chemistry. You are lucky if you get a chance to learn from him.
If you don't understand the basic underlying mechanisms of biology and just try and regurgitate, you'll fail. Really think critically about what you are learning, hone your problem solving skills, and you will do well. Record lectures, take note on what he emphasizes, read EVERYTHING. I went into the final with over 100% because of clicker Q's.
Singer has to be the worst professor I've ever had. He is very condescending and hostile during office hours. Students would ask him questions during class and he would say something like"I already went over that and I'm repeating myself". He hurries through his lectures so he can cram more information onto his already impossible exams. STAY AWAY
The only two people in our class that got A's on the exams were the two students that were retaking his class since they failed it the first time around. People in my class came in with 4.0 GPAs and they said they were going to be happy if they left his class with a C. We started with 110 students in the class and after exam 2 only 75 were left.
During an office hours visit with Dr. Singer he stated that if he were still an adjunct professor he would care about how many students got good grades on his exams because he could get promoted, but since he is now tenured it doesn't matter because he can't get promoted and can teach the class his way and at the level he wants.
This class is ridiculously hard. You could spend about 20 hours a week studying yet still fall between D's and C's
Dr. Singer is obviously intelligent, and has a remarkable understanding of the material that he teaches. However he does spend quite a bit of time talking about the famous scientists that he has met, and their accomplishments (as if it makes him more qualified than he already is). He tests on the minutia of each section so read thoroughly & often.
I think Dr thinks everyone wants to go to grad school and become molecular biologists and its his mission to personally weed people out. He said if people are having trouble with his class maybe they picked the wrong major. His class is that hard and he is proud of the fact that his exams are nearly impossible. Get ready to drop your other classes
He expects you to have taken Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry before Molecular Biology even though they are not prerequisites. Get ready to comb the textbook book with a fine toothed comb, read like 70 academic journals, attend lectures, and still have no idea what hes asking on his exams. I would not recommend him to anyone.
He tests and quizzes on things not covered in class and most of all an EXTREMELY TOUGH GRADER. He builds his tests to be extremely tricky and hard. Hes proud of the fact that his tests are guess proof and process of elimination proof.
He expects you to have a graduate school level understanding of EVERY process. You know the little footnotes at the bottom of the textbook that are size 2 font? Well, he will pull questions from those and expect you to know things you can't possible know. He doesn't hit on any key points in lecture; he just powers through 100 slides each class.
He blows past the slides so quickly there's no time to write or process what he just said. Frequently goes past the classes allotted time to cram more material in for quizes and tests. Quizes on things he never really go over. Is very vague about what we need to know for exams. It feels like he doesn't really care about teaching or being fair.
Dont take Molecular Biology with him unless youre absolutely passionate about it. His exams go beyond whats presented in lecture and the textbook. He seemingly expects a graduate level understanding of the contentmemorizing the basic concepts will not be enough. If you do take his class, record audio/video, despite him saying not to.
This is not an easy class. Multiple-choice exams are difficult and contain a number of questions that seem to have two or more plausible answers. That being said, there are quite a few gimmes as well. Record his lectures, and review them like crazy. If you accept the fact that he makes you work for a good grade, it's manageable.
The class is tough. The material is doable, as long as you read the book before lecture (highly recommend!) and print out the lecture or have your laptop out in class. Recording his lecture was basically what got me through his class, considering he speaks a mile a minute! Do not miss a clicker question, they will save your grade in the end!
Dr. Singer knows his material. If you don't like working hard then don't take this class. This is a hard class, but if you actually want to learn the information then he will give you the tools. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Record lectures, read the chapters in the book as you go through lecture slides. Exam heavy with clicker questions that will save you.
Cancer bio with Singer was great! Changed the way I think about cancer (and disease). Course was very doable! 1 test, but it was fair - big picture understanding + some detail (lots of options of what to answer). Definitely go to class & get feedback from him on projects/papers. Seems challenging, but he is just hoping ppl engage with the science!
DO NOT MISS ANY CLICKER QUESTIONS. They will destroy your grade. The syllabus made it sound like they were for participation, don't let it fool you. I missed 3 days due to illness and it dropped my grade from an A to a B. He doesn't do a (+/-) system. I did really well on all 3 exams (really difficult exams) and I definitely deserved an A. -_-
Out of my 5 years at PSU, this was the most difficult class I have ever taken and the only class I have ever been afraid of failing. Singer talks so fast its extremely difficult to keep up and recording lectures is not allowed. In order to pass, it's important to take extremely detailed notes and don't miss anything he says.
Jeff clearly cares about his subject (in this case, Cell Biology), and his students. However, this is not a class for slackers. If you do not read, take notes, ask questions, or pay attention in class, you absolutely WILL fail. But he is very accessible, kind, and clear regarding his grading. He curves, and offers extra credit when appropriate.
Virtual class-online worst cause barely lectures, expects you to read and know stuff ahead, gives you problem sets during class and 1-3 quizzes every class on each topic. Know everything before he teaches it cause he doesn't cover everything he expects us to know. Be prepared to devote lots of time and self-learning. Doesn't explain lecture well.
Worst professor ever. If you ask questions he wont even answer you, hell just tell you to read the book. Questions on midterms have more than one plausible answer.
While he gives plenty of opportunity to meet outside of class, and I see that he is genuinely passionate about the subject matter, his online format is simply subpar. During his lectures, he runs through the material at a lightning speed, and when he answers questions they are so convoluted that its hard to decipher what he's actually saying.
By FAR one of the worst professors I've ever had. Does not teach or direct student learning whatsoever. Gives no guidance, hates answering questions, does not lecture. You are expected to memorize the textbook and then he'll still throw new things at you on quizzes and tests just to see if you can guess right. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Stay away! He lectures for 15 minutes then split people into groups to answer questions. After 20 minutes you have a quiz on the material. Typically 2 quizzes a day. His midterms are incredibly dense. He expects you to now every detail of the book without really lecturing on it. You are basically teaching your self with little to no feedback.
The group topic assignments are basically free points. The quizzes can be a nuisance and bring your grade down if you do not read the night before. The tests are literally out of this world. Even reading the 100 pg chapters wont help. Download every molecular q bank on quizlet and that may possibly save your grade. He uses quizlet questions a lot
Dr. Singer is one of the best professors I have had at PSU. His molecular bio class is challenging, and you are expected to have a deep conceptual understanding of the material to excel and do well. Not willing to work hard? Dont expect to pass! Dr. Singer is dedicated to teaching and student success. Go to office hours. YOU CAN DO IT!
I took cell bio with Dr. Singer. Although difficult, his class was one of the most informative classes I took at PSU. Dr. Singer is wicked smart and very organized; his lecture slides are INCREDIBLE--perfect for making flash cards from. He has high expectations of his students, motivating me to learn much more in his class compared to easy classes.
I had a fantastic experience taking cell bio with Dr. Singer. He expects a strong conceptual understanding of the material taught, and detailed reading from the text. I would describe the pace of the class as slow, but detailed. He makes himself available and is a really cool guy who puts in extra work to help students learn the material.
LISTEN UP! I'm taking BI-334 right now. The class is set up so that you learn on your own through a required book, and he only answers questions during lecture. He does not make it clear what you need to know from the book, so you are left to learn everything from a thousand paged book. The content isn't hard, the structure and the book are awful.
Problem sets have questions that he does not lecture on and are not on the slides. Does not specify what to read in the book and you are left to teach yourself with no feedback. Intimidating and discouraging learning experience. Expects you to be a genius and learn every detail on your own.
Class required for my major. 100% would not recommend if you can avoid him
Absolutely terrible professor that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. You are expected to basically teach yourself with the class's expensive giant textbook. His lectures don't cover much of anything that you get quizzed or tested on and he really is not much help at all in getting a better understanding of the material.
Awful. You will teach yourself everything. The lecture is spent doing a group worksheet and a pop quiz both worth a lot of your grade. He won't teach you anything, the class setup is unorganized and the textbook is expensive. Expect 10 emails before the semester even starts, and read 3 chapters before day 1. if you can at all DO NOT take his class.
Worst professor ever. Can't talk to students in a way that we understand. I spend 4x more time on this class than others and I'm barely holding on. Only resource is book and reiterates to "just read the book". We're 400 pages in at week 7. Book and slides don't line up, questions use both and don't cover the same stuff. Refuse to take him again.
This class is challenging, and the amount of information you must learn is tremendous. You are expected to read before class in order to succeed. Class involves brief lectures, group hw, & quizzes. Tests can be tricky, & you must read & think carefully to avoid traps. All that being said, Dr. Singer is helpful if you go to office hours prepared.
Heavy intense amount of reading. Read 2 chapters before class starts!! Group work with involved worksheets. If group members don't participate, move groups, participation is crucial for success. Difficult exams. As hard as it was I learned a lot. Definitely worth it. Prof is dedicated to making you use your brain and encouraging future scientists.
You MUST do the reading before class, and yes this is very time consuming especially because the content is difficult to comprehend and it takes reading about 3x to be able to form a complete picture of the processes. Come to class prepared and with questions! Ask to switch groups if people in yours aren't contributing. One of The Best teachers.
This is by the far worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I took his class my junior year and he is not conducive to learning the topics. He does not answer questions and will instead direct you to the syllabus or chapters when you are confused. I dropped out of this class because it was affecting my mental health. DO NOT take this class.
One of the worst professors I have ever taken Bio with. He's very uncaring and his lectures can be summed up as him pointing at a power point and expecting us to immediately understand what he's saying. He also has terrible communication, oftentimes coming off as pretentious and passive aggressive when asked for help. By far my worst bio experience
I have always struggled with flipped classrooms and this course was no different. I felt as though I was learning much of the content on my own from the textbook. It is nice though that Dr Singer is very available for questions. Still didn't make up for the lack of lectures for me. I spent AT LEAST 6 hrs a week learning material and 2 studying.
You're teaching yourself using the textbook and slides while he provides the practice and supplemental material. Up to answering questions, but doesn't answer them simply enough for students. Love the problem sets, but felt unprepared for quizzes and exams no matter how much I study. Spent 2 hours daily all seven days learning and studying.
Singer? More like Dahmer with how he was eating our brains this term... bad prof.
His teaching style is not for me. Instead of lectures in class he puts you in groups to go through practice problems based on the (40+ pages) chapters you're expected to have read beforehand. This class has a lot of content so it took up way too much of my time to learn basically all on my own, and the first midterm was in week 3 with 75 questions.
Lectures are useless ramblings. Almost never explains anything. Just says "just draw it out". Claims not to test on memorization, but does. Wants you to buy a physical textbook for no reason. Slides are just pictures from the textbook with typos. Is very hard to talk to. Seems upset when you ask questions. Basically a self taught class. Avoid him!
This professor is not a good professor and wish he would just switch over to just his research. His expectations are to be experts in the topics even though he blows past the slides. He does not teach well and will contradict himself constantly when he says he is not focal about memorization even when he is. Don't trust the good ratings at all!!
I've taken two classes from Dr. Singer. The first one I dropped because it was not required and I was inevitably going to receive a harsh grade for group members not participating. Dr. Singer likes to emphasize that he will not help with this, will not lecture, and will not answer questions. I don't know why he's getting paid.
Dropped course after 1st week. Instantly knew my grade would not reflect the hours I'd spend reading and studying. He doesn't teach, you learn by yourself from the massive amounts of textbook readings per week. Very unorganized and unstructured. No lecture slides to study from-seems like class is structured for him to do the least amount of work.
I really like Dr. Singer, so I feel bad criticizing his teaching, but it's just not his thing. He is a great example of a brilliant researcher who should either stay in the lab or take some teaching courses. He is kind, but based on my experience, shows signs of being on the autism spectrum. Please be kind to him- he's a sweetheart really.
Singer seems very mean and is usually in a bad mood. He can be kind at times but when you ask him questions he only says one thing, "draw it" which is not helpful at all. I stopped asking him anything. The class is graded on 5 things. 1-assigments (work with a group), 2-online quizzes, 3-midterm, 4-test, 5-Final. He gives extra credit sometimes.
Professor Singer's BI334 is a challenging course, but engaging if you put in the work. The heavy reading load and tricky exams require significant preparation, but attending class and using resources like Unstuck ai can help. With effort, you'll learn a lot, even if the teaching style isn't for everyone.
This class is literally just glorified self-study with exams and quizzes in the middle......
you'd basically be better off learning from a textbook
Avoid taking this professor at all costs. There is no lecture at all. Class time is spent on group worksheets. The only learning you'll be doing is by reading the textbook. The professor doesn't teach, is rude and passive aggressive. First day of class and he expects us to read and understand 83 pages of the text. Half the class dropped first day.
If you want to go home in tears every day, this is the class for you. Would not wish my worst enemy the pain of learning from this guy.
Take this course if you want to tank your GPA He has yelled at 1 person MINIMUM every class so far Wont answer questions and makes you feel dumb for asking Never lectures Assigns insane amounts of reading Expects prodigies Half the class dropped on the first day Don't take him If you're already enrolled DROP NOW it only gets worse I'm so serious
Rate my professor is so important. I wish I had read these reviews before I registered. Thought I could stick it out after more than 50% of the class dropped, but I do not recommend. Don't waste your time or money. Either don't take or drop now.
This course is literally from the depths of hell. The flipped classroom model and exams that literally have questions the textbook doesn't go over will send any prodigy straight to the gutter. Half of his exam is literally on the most niche sentences and topics in the textbook, of which you'll have to read about 40-50 pages before every lecture.
Taking this class felt like self harm. Put in so many hours for so little pay off. Truly the hardest class I've ever taken. Couldn't stop thinking this class would be so much better if there was a lecture or at least something besides the book to study from, since not everything he tests on is in there. Just groupwork and the niche test questions.
Students don't like that he makes you put in the work and doesn't give straightfoward answers. But we are getting to the level in biology where over-simplifying misses point. He helps us learn how to think at the molecular level. To conceptualize the experiments that showed how all this stuff works (we think). Most valuable class I've ever taken.
