Attendance is mandatory if you want to get credit for clickers. Absolutely read the book if not you will not know what is going on in the class and the test.
He's a great professor,he's genuinely concerned with students needs, and he answers all questions (good or bad). Excellent clarity in his explanations.
He's a great professor!I would definitely recommend him. Very good at explaining concepts and giving really life examples. I hated the homework though, it was a pain.
I've never seen anyone control such a large classroom with such skill. Jeff makes class interesting and worth going to with demos and smart use of technology (pdfs, cameras, microphones, videos, etc.) He speaks clearly and his lecture slides are precise and easy to follow. He spends a lot of time outside the classroom making videos, preparing demonstrations, and being available for students. As long as you do the assigned reading and homework problems you shouldn't have any troubling keeping up.
The best science professor I have had so far! He really cares about the students and is willing to help in every way possible. He encourages questions and doesn't make anyone feel like they asked a stupid question. And mainly he really loves chemistry, you can tell from his excitement over demonstrations. Take him for chemistry!
Absolutely an amazing professor! Lectures are clear and very well organized, every day there is a demo that coincides with the information being presented. He also makes study/review videos in his spare time, which are super helpful! The material itself can be somewhat tricky, but overall not too horrible. I'd highly recommend him for gen chem!
One of the best professors I have ever had. The classes are huge, but he always makes time to meet with you when you need it. He is very approachable, friendly and so helpful. I would recommend him to anyone! His lectures are clear and organized and he makes even the most dreadful chapters enjoyable. A+
He's the best science professor I've ever had. He does demonstrations in class every time and his clicker questions are easy.
This class was so much fun; the professor was so into the class and he was so helpful. I loved this class every morning. Even if it was at 7:30 am he made the class worth it to come. And was quite a nice view first thing in the AM
Professor Statler is GREAT!!! He did a lot of work on preparing classes! He made tutorial video so you can go over the material before class. Also, his class is super super fun since he does a lot of demonstrations.
Statler is a good professor that puts a good effort to make class interesting and shows energy while teaching. Although what he teaches in class is a little different than what the department tests on the exams, he gives students lot of practice problems to master so that we can pass the exams. Overall he is a good professor.
Statler is a great professor with lots of enthusiasm and fun demonstrations. Lectures don't always cover the material though so a lot of learning is done outside class. From what I've heard, he's the best professor teaching Chem 1 and 2.
If you need to take chemistry you should take it with him. Statler is a great professor. I really love taking chemistry with him. He does a lot of demonstartion during the lecture which makes the lecture more interesting. I really understood chemistry with him. I am excited to take general chemistry 2 next semester with him.
Endless energy. Always had demonstrations and always has makes time for his students, which was especially astonishing since I know he was taking courses of his own. If you have to take Chemistry, take it from this guy. I got a C in high school and an A now. I'm taking him again next semester.
Awesome professor, I recommend him to the fullest. I personally hate textbooks and never once looked at it, the OWL homework prepared me for his lectures and the TA's in the discussions were amazingly helpful as well. Class is mandatory for the clicker points, but don't worry if you miss a few; the discussion clickers give up to 5% extra credit.
fantastic
To start off, he doesn't write his own tests, he uses another professors tests and aren't given the resources the other class has the luxury of; ex. practice tests actually knowing what he's gone over in his own class.
Great teacher! He does a great job at putting demonstrations in the class to make it less boring. I only had trouble with one exam but the rest a pretty easy.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures are interesting and everything is presented clearly in multiple formats (auditory, visual). Demonstrations are awesome, especially for days when you forget your morning coffee. Heavy clicker use during class, but he posts the formulas on the board for reference. Just be sure to attend regularly.
Last year, he was fantastic. THIS YEAR, he put all of his lectures online. He does not lecture, but his entire class is clickers. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will have to teach yourself and its not worth the wake up.
To start, he doesn't teach anything. All of his lectures are online and his ENTIRE class is based on clicker questions. Furthermore, he criticizes students with ridicule when one doesn't know how to solve a problem. On the same hand, his job title is "teacher", which leaves the question, Why doesn't he teach? In all, he is an awful teacher.
Though the class is not long, and the lectures are interesting, the material conveyed is a bit confusing and the teaching style is definitely one that requires a lot of focus
He is very rude to students and even says things like "if you were a good student.....". This seems to make many people feel saddened when attending his class and above all, he just hurts their feelings. The way he teaches is terrible. He places all of his lectures online and uses his FULL lecture time for clicker questions. In all, he is awful.
Pros-Professor is knowledgeable & lectures are on YouTube. Cons-lecture & discussion is required. I drive 2 hours RT for 50 min discussion where we answer 1-2 questions. It's a waste. I could use that time to study more at home. Lecture can be the same at times. I find myself teaching myself at home so it's frustrating that class is required.
He's so into the subject, his enthusiasm I'd contagious. This isn't even my major but he made me enjoy the class. And it's not even my major.
Interesting lectures! Easy to focus in class. Tests are tough.
Same standardized tests for all chem 1210 professors so you cant really compare Statlers difficulty. I have heard amoungst students that Statler is most popular chem 1210 instructer (even though he isnt a PhD). Go to class and get easy clicker points. I like his lectures. If you understand the homework and watch his videos, you will get an A.
If you are a student who also has a full-time job, good luck. Expect 2+ homework assignments a week that are moderately lengthy. Expect 4 full length online practice tests that are FOR CREDIT prior to every test (due specific days at obscure times). Prepare to be blind sided by countless things like class every day of the week and mandatory attend.
Great teacher. He is very nerdy and funny. Best lecturer
His lectures were nothing but clickers. Never did he actually LECTURE. It was all on YouTube + madra homework + 4 pretests before your actual exam. I understand doing practice problems, but I would rather him lecture in class or else I would've taken it online because it was all basically online. I only came to class to get the 200+ clicker points!
The tests are hard and the class requires a lot of studying BUT Statler is awesome! In lecture, you basically work through clicker questions together. So watching his lecture videos beforehand is a must. He is good at explaining concepts and answering questions. He does awesome demonstrations almost every lecture.
If you are looking to actually learn chemistry, then DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. His tests hardly relate to his online lectures and he doesn't explain how to work problems out during class. Basically, he doesn't teach.
If you need to take Gen Chem I, this is the professor to take it from. Jeffrey Statler provides: 1) Lecture videos covering all relevant class material (so textbook is unnecessary) 2) Extra practice problems to study 3) An army of TA's to help 4) Four practice tests to study per exam. It won't be easy, but if you put in work, you'll get the A.
If you are good at chemistry, this class will be very frustrating. This professor often gives clicker questions during class that he doesn't care what number you enter. He just wants to penalize anyone who is late or absent. His lectures are not informative, and he expects you to learn outside of class by watching his YouTube videos.
He is very good at explaining and teaching to simplicity. Does a great job at providing not only a plethora of material to help you, but also is available to help you whenever you need. Online homework is sometimes very tough and seems irrelevant.. Though that isn't him who makes it. He is the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. I'd recommend.
I've loved Statler for both Gen Chem 1 & 2! Although many are not a fan of his youtube videos and madra homework assignments, I think it is a great system. Instead of reading in the textbook, you watch a 10-15 minute video about a new concept the day before you learn it in lecture, take a short pre quiz, and then reinforces it the next day.
Don't buy the textbook--it's a waste of money. He expects you to watch 10-15 min lecture videos instead of reading. The homework is difficult & there are 1-2 problems due before every lecture that are based on videos you should watch for the upcoming lecture. Tests are difficult and he doesn't curve. Lectures are basically a bunch of clickers.
His lectures are horrible. The whole class is a series of clicker questions. Inevitably, you will get some of these questions wrong, and you will be able to watch your grade drop during class because clickers are worth 25 percent of your final grade. The professor cares more about people attending his lectures than learning chemistry.
Great lecturer, and more importantly, his class is all geared to get you a good grade on the standardized, national final. He's been in the business long enough that he knows how to prepare his students, and his students get the best average grades. Definitely recommend.
One of the best professors I've had. I've read through other ratings and I am confused how there are any negative ones. His videos are entirely relevant to homework and tests. Plus you have the chem help lab anytime you are confused OR you can easily get Statler to help you. The clickers are easy and are basically extra points to boost your grade.
Statler is a great guy and knows a lot about chemistry. He's super nice and encourages participation... The way the course was laid out though, was kinda weird, but I think they're changing it for next year. Watch his lecture videos; they are super helpful!
Professor Statler is one one of the best instructors I have had at the U. If you go and participate in class (and by participate I mean actually ask questions), study and do the homework, as well as seek help when you need it you will do very well. Anyone who thinks they are going to get an A without working for is a fool. it wont happen anywhere.
I really wish I had Statler for Gen Chem 1! Did way better in his class. Take Statler's class! He loves teaching and loves chemistry. Get to class on time. If you do nothing else, watch his videos. Even though my class was at 7:30 he made it interesting and fun with jokes and demonstrations. Plus the A was worth it.
If you want to teach yourself Chemistry, then you would love taking Statler! His class consists of him making you watch his youtube videos of him mumbling. Then you go to "class" to try and get your clicker points but since it is such a big class, theres hardly any learning and rude teaching assistants. Textbook? Yeah thats online. Good luck!
There are 3 classes you have to take with this class. It is way too much work. If you have a job, good luck. The chemistry department at the U is bull. He doesn't teach material. He wants you to read the chapter, do the homework and ask q's in class, never enough time for that. Homework and quizzes everynight, about 4 hours worth! DON'T TAKE IT
There are clicker questions everyday but most of the time he just gives you the answers. Lots of time consuming homework but it's not hard work.
Pretty good.
Statler is a gift to general chemistry students. He has a well-deserved reputation of being the best gen. chem. teacher. He, however, doesn't have much competition as the other teachers aren't well liked. Statler is available during his office hours and always gives notice if he can't make it.
Statler really wants his students to succeed; he's really supportive and available if you show that you're trying in the class. He expects you to watch the videos before class, and you do practice in lecture and discussion. Go to class, do the clickers for points, and do the additional practice questions in discussion before tests and you're fine.
Statler is extremely invested in his students doing good. He will hold Sunday reviews before every exam. He will sit in the lobby after class for students who want to ask questions or need help. There is a large workload, but this is pretty equal for all chem classes. He makes sure his students have everything it takes to succeed. One of the best!
This class is going to be more challenging to people who need to take for just full-fill the general education class. However, Jeff cares about his students and he wants students to study and participate his lecture. If you are going be science major. I highly recommend to take his class. This class is going to cover decent amount of materials.
Jeff was awesome! This class was pretty much all online, didn't learn much in lecture and even less in discussion. Class takes a lot of studying so be ready to invest a lot of time, SI sessions was where I learned the most, Carter was awesome and him and Jeff are always flexible in seeing students and answering their questions.
He was available outside of lecture as much as he could be and would help students during discussion or even with homework questions. Be prepared for a lot of homework on Madra and the quizzes every week on Madra are a little tough. Smart guy but humble enough to admit when he did not know something.
Worst chemistry professor. Made me absolutely hate my favorite subject. His class consists of nothing but random questions that hurt your grade. You will end up teaching YOURSELF chemistry, but it won't be the way he does chemistry so you continue to watch your grade disappear in front of your eyes. Worst class I've ever taken at the University.
His tests are all online through Madra. You're only graded on clicker questions, online homework & tests. He doesn't write the tests & there are often errors in the questions/answers. He doesn't really lecture. Expects you to put in 10+ hours a week in homework & watching youtube videos of him. Wouldn't recommend unless you want to teach yourself.
Professor is an amazing gem. I loved his class because he tried to make chemistry fun, a non-fun subject. His exams were okay but you do have to study some. You should expect that at this level though. One of the only good professors in the chemistry dept.
Professor Statler made one of my most hated classes a little easier for me. There was a lot of homework and quizzes, but alongside optional study sessions that he offered, I was nothing but benefited. The lectures were slightly tedious sometimes, as there are clicker problems, but it I would recommend this him to anyone who struggles like I do.
Jeff's the best chemistry professor at the University of Utah. He's incredibly knowledgeable and loves to teach. He's a rare breed of chemistry professor that takes his teaching as seriously as his research. He's easily accessible outside of the classroom and his lectures are very informative and easy to follow. I'd recommend him to anyone.
He seems like a good guy, but he really just wants to play, not teach. Also, the homework is ridiculous. The chemistry department has a grad student who writes the homework, so often, it's irrelevant or way ahead of where you're at in lecture. Watching the videos helps, but Khan Academy and SI sessions become your best friend.
The class isn't too difficult so long as you keep up on your homework and actually learn the material. 3 assignments and 1 quiz a week. Most of them don't take too long. Prof. Statler does amazing in-class demonstrations and really tries to teach in a clear, easy-to-understand way. He's also very willing to answer questions and give help.
This class requires attention and willingness. If you need help he is always willing to help. If you do not want to help yourself or spend the time to study, you will not go far. This is expected in a chemistry class at a University. Not expected to always have professors who are willing to help whenever you need it. Great teacher.
Classes consisted of early morning torture clicker sessions. If you miss too many it will drop a whole percentage of your grade. I had to self teach myself. Really frustrating his homework is written by a grad student so it becomes useless when youre preparing for exams or the final ACS. Also, Statlers tests are different than the ACS final. GL
Jeff is a caring guy, but he is not a great professor. The class revolves around his demos and TA's doing clickers for points, but very little work in class helps you prepare for the tests. He also has homework due 4 times a week that is not consistent with the curriculum. If you take this class, prepare to show up everyday but still teach yourself
Statler didn't do much of the teaching, most of your learning occurs online through the textbook and homework. The lecture serves as a review of the stuff you've already had to teach yourself, but overall it's not difficult. The discussion section is almost pointless in terms of learning, but you have to go so you can earn the participation points.
Jeff is a great guy and loves Chemistry but his lectures rarely teach any problems you need for the exams. He gives 4-5 homework assignments each week that also don't correlate to the exams. Goes off topic a lot his reviews are a waste of time. Wouldn't take it from him unless you're already familiar or have a background with Chemistry.
Jeff is nice, but most of your time in class and discussion is spent on clicker questions. The class is flipped, so you watch old recorded lecture videos on youtube rather than in-class lecture. This is unfortunate, and I haven't come across any students who benefit from this. The teachers are glorified clicker proctors rather than true professors.
Statler is an incredible prof. If you have some basic knowledge of chem from high school and do your weekly hws with some studying, you will do fine. For midterms, study his lectures and the discussion questions. The final is almost all stoich. He is willing to help you and he is such a kind professor who loves his students.
Great prof. Don't skip class, and always complete online hw. If you took chemistry in high school; this class won't be very difficult. I had to occasionally read the book, but mastering chemistry and lectures helped the most. Always go to reviews (and Q&A sessions) before tests. If you put effort into this class and study for tests, you'll pass.
what a breath of fresh air compared to other chem professors. He is very understanding and does lots of really awesome experiments in class to make it more interesting. and his grading is fair.
Hands down the best professor at the U. Statler really wants everyone in his class to do well. He is available every single day after class for at least an hour if you need any help with the material, so there is no excuse for being confused on a topic. Tests are exactly like questions from lecture. Statler is so so caring and an amazing human.
Great teacher but consistently assigns homework on material that hasn't been taught yet/ is due the day that it was taught. Heavily rely on chegg/yahoo answers for that.
THE BEST CHEMISTRY TEACHER EVER! He is always willing to meet with you if you are having issues and works with you if you have conflicts. Extremely caring. He explains things very well and makes lectures interesting with lots of demonstrations, even at 7:30AM.
By far the best Gen. Chem professor at the University of Utah.
Took him for both 1210 and 1220. His lectures are top notch and cover all the material you need for exams. The only problem is the lectures are usually far behind the homework so you will have to either read the textbook or watch his videos. Understanding the somewhat difficult homework is the key to this class.
I used to struggle with Chemistry, but Mr. Statler had flipped my attitude towards chemistry. Really humble and loves helping students, his material is super organized and he has lots of learning resources. Best gen chem professor at the U; hands down.
I don't think I'm eloquent enough in English to describe how amazing Mr. Statler is. He changed my perspective on chemistry. His attitude, his class structure, and the way he treats students brings the best out of students. Just go for it, you won't find a professor who teaches chemistry better than him.
He is very passionate about chemistry and it is contagious.
Professor Statler is truly an amazing professor. He is incredibly passionate about chemistry and understands it is not an easy class but does everything he can to help students understand the material. Truly a gem of a teacher he makes 0730 class fun with demonstrations. The course work is evenly balanced so one bad test will not kill your grade!
Prof Statler is the man. Cares a lot and super enthusiastic about chemistry. He clearly loves what he is doing and his happiness is contagious. Very funny, amazing lectures, great supplementary videos on canvas and blows up hydrogen balloons on the regular. I will never take a chemistry course with any other professor.
Although his class is at 7:30 in the morning and I could barely wake up every day, I highly recommend taking General Chemistry from Statler. He's the best professor for this subject and definitely teaches you everything you need to know in this class, with a fair load of homework, relatively easy tests, and tons of blowing stuff up (literally).
Professor Statler is extremely nice and accessable out of class, but makes poor use of lecture time. He gives you an abundance of resources with little direction (often telling you what not to study, not what to focus on), and essentially expects you to teach yourself chemistry. Paid the price for having taken a second semester from him.
Not only is Statler hilarious, but he is also incredibly kind and knowledgeable. He is always accessible outside of class and really REALLY wants to help his students succeed, so PLEASE reach out to him. I was scared to take chemistry again, but his class was very accessible and fun for a chemistry class!! Very sweet guy and cool demonstrations.
He cares for students' progress so if you take his class then do not hesitate to go to his office hours. His lecture is more of a QnA where he interacts with students and he would also demonstrate some experiments from time to time. Remember to do the Dynamics Learning Modules. You should watch his videos before class rather than using the textbook
Statler genuinely cares about his student's success. When possible, he goes out of his way to individually reach each student given his giant classes. You can tell he has real passion for both chemistry and teaching. He will patiently and carefully reiterate any topic or question you're struggling with in office hours.
The best instructor of any subject and specialty of any I have ever had. Seriously dedicated to student success and exceptionally accessible. Exams always graded same day and if you work for it you will get the grade you deserve. I cannot recommend Professor Statler highly enough.
Statler is just an amazing guy. Not much else to say. If he is an option for your Chem class, take him.
Even though I took this course online, Professor Statler was very supportive and helpful via emails and was reachable at almost any time for questions on homework, or about the class in general. He is funny in almost every email, makes his quizzes very fair and are closely related to the homework, and genuinely cares about his students' successes.
Statler is supposedly the best professor at the U, but yet I've never had a worse teacher. Completely rude and blatantly does not care about anything but his paycheck. Exams were multiple-choice, wihardly any partial credit. Often does not teach and relies on outdated slides and lecture videos leaving you to learn a difficult subject with no help.
He is a good professor he really challenges you to answer your own question but he helps guide you through to the answer. I very much disliked competency checks at 7:30 am in the morning but what can I say I should've studied a little because when I did do that I could do half of this class in my sleep. He's not my favorite but there is worse.
Statler is such an amazing professor and a welcome breath of fresh air from some of the other boring and uninvolved science/math professors at the U. He's a funny guy and really tries to know all the students he can. His class does have an awful lot of homework but as long as you pay attention, all the assignments and quizzes should be a breeze!
Easily the best chemistry professor at the U. This course can be a little tough for non-majors, but Professor Statler is such a genuinely good person who actually cares about how students do in his class that you can't really go wrong with him as your professor.
A good professor to explain general chemistry in an understandable way.
Professor Statler was a great professor and cares about the success of his students. Waking up at 7:00AM to go to chemistry is never fun, but Statler makes it as enjoyable as possible. I would recommend Statler to anyone who has to take General Chem.
Professor Statler made gen chem one of the best classes I have ever taken in college. He made every lecture interesting and found ways to show us in real life experiments what he was teaching about. Sitting near the front, being in engaged all class, and doing the clicker questions really helped to solidify the information we needed to learn.
Everything you could ask for from as a professor. He cares a lot and very respected by both students and colleagues. His lectures are well thought out and does all he can to help us understand. He teaches with a contagious enthusiasm and passion. Only con is his lectures are at 7:30 in the morning and I'm not a morning person.
Statler is a good teacher and is helpful. However, the problem with this class is 1-the homework often is unrelated to the tests, which is something the prof agrees with. 2-The exams are very difficult and had concepts I had never seen before. He's a good professor but because of these things everyone I know has a lower grade in this class.
Mr. Statler is by far the best professor I have ever had at the U. He really wants his students to succeed and he does his best to make sure they do! If you are wondering if a 7:30 am class is worth it...It totally is! I did not apply myself as much as I should have, hence my grade in the class but I never missed a lecture.
He is a good guy but does not give extra credit except if you go to lecture. He thinks that is extra credit but it really is not, your test just weighs less, but his class is so early it is difficult to get out of bed.
If you are going to take gen chem at the U, prof Statler is the top choice for both chem 1 and 2. I personally never thought I would love chem but his passion for the subject is contagious. He also has a way of teaching complex topics in a simplified manner that makes tackling chemistry very manageable.
I took this professor because I heard he was phenomenal. He was decent, but it definitely wasn't worth going to class at 7:30 almost every day where attendance was mandatory. The tests were quite difficult and stressful for me personally especially on the acid-base equilibrium unit.
This class was fine. It was definitely hard to learn from Professor Statler, but the homework are helpful. Class is MANDATORY and you are given daily participation credit. I also really struggled on the tests - they were somewhat long and very difficult. While Statler is a really friendly guy, I wouldn't take chemistry from him again.
Took this class in 2018 as a sophomore-turning-junior in HS over the summer. Very intensive, builds on core chem subjects in a fun way but very thoroughly. Labs felt kind of pointless really, but I liked the experience of working in one. LOTS of math, as it's the language of chem, and the exams were very high-stakes and cumulative.
Good teacher, but his lectures were so slow.
Prof. Statler was a strict professor and had high expectations. He doesn't have an accent, which is a plus. He can be understood clearly and is a great professor. He was not very nice in emails, especially when I had a funeral come up and he wouldn't help me out.
My somewhat negative experience may have been an outlier with this professor, but one-on-one he was not very personable and seemed to take it personally if you didn't understand a concept. His lectures are engaging, but would be very confusing unless you read ahead in the textbook. The tests are really easy though as long as you do the homework.
I don't know a single student who has taken Statler and didn't like him. Super funny guy who makes Chemistry interesting and easier to understand. He offers more than enough help for you to succeed but you won't survive without a significant amount of study outside of class. The class Canvas page was also a bit cluttered and hard to navigate.
He is the best teacher for Gen Chem 1, he is so lively and genuinely cares about you and chemistry, and that is very apparent in his lectures, even though they are at 7:30 in the morning. The class is difficult but if you make sure to study for exams and weekend homework checks, it's really not that bad. I would highly recommend him for gen chem 1.
Lectures are vague and you really just have to study the content yourself. He's funny and does lots of demos, but not worth it in the lack of content delivered. You get tested every week on the content which doesn't get taught.
Despite being an in-person class, this is very much a teach-yourself class, with limited content support. Lectures are insufficient and Statler gets through maybe two bullet points per class, but will test on everything.
The content is hard but his lectures are very fun.
Get ready to teach yourself everything. Prof uses lecture slides from 20 years ago. Spends most of lecture joking around and doesn't actually teach. Attendance is pretty much mandatory.
he was a very funny guy and did alot of experiments in class. tests arent super easy but as long as you do the work he will help you pass the class. attendance is done every lecture and discussion and worth 2pts. its only 2pts but it adds up fast. you can make up the attendance missed
Professor Statler makes a 7:30 am course fun. He is very thorough and if you follow his class structure, the class is not difficult. The concepts are tricky but there are several resources that he provides. He's a funny guy and he does a lot of demonstrations so lectures don't feel boring for an hour. I highly recommend him for Gen Chem II.
He started the semester by telling us that a lot of people won't pass. He is not sympathetic to students. His lectures are scattered and lack any structure. He is using the same lecture 'slides' from years ago. Do not take this class if you can help it.
He was good, but I didn't think he was the best. I think he's the best choice out of the options for chemistry professors, but he never really got through anything in lecture, he did one or two practice problems the whole time then would do a demonstration that never helped me learn. He is definitely a nice guy tho he just didn't really prepare me
Easy A class, terrible professor. He DOES NOT TEACH IN CLASS, only does practice problems so you absolutely need to read the book (easily gets you a 97 on each test if you do). Stands by his terribly written homework checks and terrible attendance system (he's very rude if you kindly ask him to edit your attendance grade if his scan didn't work).
He's definitely the best out of other professors teaching gen chem 2. I'm a visual learner and his lectures were helpful as he often used class time to solve problems instead of going over concepts. If you walk in class not having read the text, you won't know what you're staring at on the projector
Professor Statler's class is poorly organized. He uses ancient powerpoints and cannot use technology well. He doesn't respond to emails promptly. He strictly does not curve grades and prides himself on the difficulty of his course (averages of below 65).
Statler is a great teacher as long as you are willing to have class at 7:30 in the morning. I am personally a morning person so this worked out well for me. He definitely cares about his students and explains things well, but this class is very hard. So far the hardest class I have taken in college. If you do not put in the work, you will fail.
Even though attendance is mandatory at 7:30 am, the class has almost no structure. The lectures go by slowly and there is very minimal course content taught. You basically have to teach yourself everything and sit through early morning classes to watch demos and go through practice problems. Ineffective teaching methods with no strong resources.
Be sure to do a lot of practice problems in your own time if you want to do well. His lecture slides and teaching style are antiquated and you will have to spend a lot of your own time studying. The course grading was harsh-doing poorly on an exam has a significant impact on your grade. Regardless, his lectures were entertaining and had many demos.
Statler is amazing! The class takes work, but he's so entertaining and an amazing teacher. You will fall in love with chemistry if you put the work in. I definitely recommend him. He's hands down the best professor I've had here at the U so far!
Statler is great but usually only teaches gen chem 1 and 2 early in the morning so if you're up for 7:30 class, he's your best bet
His lecture slides are very disorganized and tests and homework problems always seem to be designed as though they are trying to trick you into picking the wrong answer. With exams because of how he sets up canvs you have to get a 100 to keep your current grade. He makes 60 minute exams dispite class only being 50 minutes long.
Statler showed great enthusiasm in his lectures with colorful slides and fascinating experiments which made the 7:30 class more bearable. Homework and quizzes were very challenging and I wish they could've been easier. Be aware that the tests are difficult and require you to do very well on them in order to keep a good grade in the class.
Great professor, highly recommended!
Statler makes chemistry as easy and straightforward as possible and only tells you what you need to know. I probably study 3 ish hours a week and I do fine. His class does take effort, but not an unreasonable amount and the class is generally underwhelming. Definitely getting him for gen chem 2.
He gives terrible lectures. Content is not explained in a logical manner. Goes on many tangents. Lacks tolerance for weaker students. Has a very old style of teaching.
Overall a solid professor. Lectures are engaging and often have demonstrations. Who doesn't love a good explosion? If you took chemistry in high school the class is fairly easy but if not no worries, there's lots of extra help if you need it. His handwriting and notes are easy to follow. Tests are easy if you pay attention in class and study.
Good professor, very friendly and lectures were great
He was amazing and walked through everything at a great pace.
Statler is a wonderful professor who makes lectures interesting. Chemistry is hard, but he dumbs it down for you to understand. He gives plenty of practice and wants you to succeed. He is genuinely one of the nicest and most approachable professors.
Loved his teaching style and didn't realize how good he was till Prof. Frey had to sub the rest of the semester due to health challenges. Definitely take Prof. Statler!
He is incredibly kind, but doesn't teach in lectures. He wants you to teach yourself outside of class then come with questions. Not the easiest learning style. Exams only have around 12-14 questions on them so you can only miss one in order to receive an A. You will only pass if you spend hours teaching yourself. No extra credit/curves.
Statler's class is a mixed bag - the lectures can be disorganized, but he's an engaging teacher. Doing the work is key, as the exams are tricky. unstuck AI was super helpful for practice and study prep. Take it if you're up for the challenge.
Honestly he wasn't that bad. He made the lectures more engaging and enjoyable. The only thing I would says is that when you ask what to study for the midterms then he'll tell you and i quote, “Just study everything”. Also randomly my grade just bounces around for no explanation and the teacher never explained why.
Jeffrey is a nice professor but I wouldn't say a good professor. All of learning must be done outside of class and equations are not well explained during lectures. For important equations he will either do one example and expect us to learn then, or have the equation already completed and also expects us to learn from that. Be prepared to study!
Having experienced both professor Statler and professor Frey, I definitely prefer Statler's lecture style. His explanations are thorough and he is always willing to answer questions. Professor Statler really cares about his student, and he works hard to make lectures fun-- at the end of almost every lecture he blows something up in the fume hood.
Statler had really bad an unorganized lectures, Frey had to take over due to health issues and honestly I didn't enjoy either of them very much. Get ready to work your butt off learning outside of class, the exams have very few questions allowing you to get a very bad grade just for missing a couple questions.
Prof. Statler was great and I very much enjoyed his lectures. Classes were engaging and fun to attend with lots of demos that kept your attention. Exams were very difficult and I put in lots of time to get mediocre scores. Be prepared to read the textbook and do lots of work outside class, but Statler was a very great teacher, just a hard subject.
Really good overall professor. Teaches mostly via demonstrations which is nice, hands down the best professor I have taken so far at the U. Grades very heavily on exams.
Jeff was a great guy and a great professor. I'd suggest reading the book, or at least skim through it, before lecture. His lectures were amazing and his demos made it easy to understand the concepts. He got a surgery in the middle of my semester and was out for a while and everyone missed him. Would highly suggest.
Awful lectures. Poorly explained concepts. Lectures are all handwritten and hard to read. Would not recommend for anyone who finds typed notes or struggles reading handwriting. Makes rude comments to students during class. Doesn't care about class performance and will joke about how poorly everyone is doing.
The only gripe I had about his class was that it was an early morning class. Hated that. Other than that's he's a great professor and his lectures are super cool.
I found that the experiments in class helped me understand the topics better. He enjoys his job which makes the lectures much less boring. I had one of the other professors for a bit while Statler was dealing with some health issues, and for me Statler was the better professor.
Statler is a hilarious guy. If you want to have fun in a huge lecture, take his class. He is incredibly caring and helpful, and will ALWAYS help you if you ask for it. He really gets to know the students who take time to participate and ask questions. Being an active participant in his class will greatly benefit you. I love Statler, you will too.
So amazing; he provides great feedback on assignments and fun practical demonstrations. 10/10
J. Statler is not the one grading everything, but he does teach the lectures. His lectures are easy to understand, and the material is organized well. Don't expect to get much one-on-one attention unless you really try to stand out.
Hard class in general, he knows what he's talking about, will answer any question
Statler is great! He seems like he might not be at first, but don't be fooled by the course topic or his calm demeanor.
Statler was definitely one of the best professors I've had. He is genuinely interested in what he teaches, and it shows; he is caring and invested in his students, which goes a long way, especially in a 350-person lecture. I would recommend him to anyone taking Chemistry 1210 or 1220.
Ignore everyone that says he sucks, this is the easiest class I have taken in my entire life. Statler is hilarious, a genuine guy who loves chemistry. I spent less than 30 minutes outside of class. A deaf, blind monkey could pass this.
Prof. Statler is awesome. In a room full of 300 kids, he tries his hardest to connect with each one, even remembering some by name. He does many live experiments in class, which I loved. He also teaches via practice problems, which are EXACTLY like the ones on the test. Overall, a great guy and the only valid option if you are taking CHEM 1210.
I heard multiple people complain about another professor, so if you're taking gen chem I, take Statler or Frey. The class moved pretty slow, but he taught the course well.
