Better have lots of Coffee and an open mind, along with the ability to follow one long thought process thru the entire class.
Amazing professor who not only accepts the opinions of other, but expects them. Highly recommended for Philosophy or Political Thought.
I love this prof. He makes the class so fun, and I strongly reccomend taking his classes.
I had to nag this guy for notes and assignments when I missed classes while I was in the hospital when my liver failed, adn he gave them to me 2 days before finals!! I failed, 47% thanks a lot.
good prof..very philosophical...figures huh? But b prepared to go into depth with Logic...he is very approachable and encourage class questions...but must study and go to class if u want a good mark
Made Macheoveli interesting to me. loved the class, made class worth going to. Be prepared to read texts, and to discuss them, Wouldn't take a 3 hour class from him, it would be a headache.
He made the class very interesting in a "Jerry Seinfeld" way...
easiest class I have ever had. Follows text to the letter. Read the text and you will do well.
Very good prof. He makes discussions lively and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this class. And he's a cutie, too.
BORING!!!
This class was by far the most boring I have ever taken. He used language very specialized for his field and never explained the terms to the class. I don't think he knew the class was an "Introduction to Logic" class and assumed everyone had knowledge in the class already. Try Not to Take It
First of all, I dont know if anyone else agrees, but I think he sorta looks like David Schwimmer(Ross from Friends). Smart guy, but he uses too many big or made-up words to explain and if you think its gonna be like math, look else where because this is more of a Philosophy/English class.
He sucked. He rambled but at least his tests were easy.
Good guy, but I think tends to overanalyse. It's an interesting class, but never gave out due dates for the assignments. No structure in that sense. Most of the classes were just opinion and not really very structured. Easy on the eyes too
If logic 100 is a core requirement for your program, then this is the professor you want. If you show up for class and do the work, you CAN’T FAIL this class. Jeff is very approachable and he is prompt and comprehensive is answering any questions you may have.
I took the 3 hr class from him....Don't do it, he repeats himself endlessly. Was not particularly helpful or friendly that I saw. All you need is the textbook anyway. Interesting guy though -- got lost in academia somewhere in the 60s-70s. Cute as hell, too. :)
Excellent teacher with a great sense of humour and a Jerry Seinfeld/Woody Allen approach to life. Much better than a math class for an arts student like me!
He jumps around alot and is hard to follow. I'd strongly suggest taking an alternate logic class if you can.
Oh my...this guy is boring!!! If you really want to enjoy Logic class, take it from someone else. Vancha repeats himself endlessly! Definitely a class worth skipping. Read the book and you'll be fine in this class!
I wish i didn't have to take Logic, to began with it is hard to understand Logic by itself and even worse when you had a prof like Jeff so boring and repeats himself over and over again. by the end of the class what I know is him saying very easy basic staff sure it is basic for him but as a student we here to learn and great a good greade, but wit
He's a great prof and you'll have no problem in his class if you keep up with the work. He's a little contradictory at times, but all in all an awesome prof. He's funny too so that's a bonus:)
He is the worst prof I have ever had. By far the most boring and hard to understand. If you approach him for help or ask questions he is extremely unhelpful. Do not take this class
Do not take a class with this professor. I have never failed a class in my life, but did with him. He expects you to have knowledge you do not have and his website does not help at all. Run from this class as fast as you can.
Soooooo boring!!!! I think I went to this class five times the entire year and I'm still doing well in it. He pretty much plagiarizes everything from the guy who wrote the book.
Sooo boring, he doesn't help you to understand the course at all. He basically just reads from the textbook and expects you to understand everything that is going on. He is of little help to anyone. He also screws up pretty well every class. I sometimes wonder if he even knows what he is talking about
Great Prof! This was my most challenging, yet best class this semester. If you read the text before class, everything can make sense if you pay attention during the lectures. The midterms and assignments have no surprises. Do your homework and the written exercises like he suggests and you'll do fine.
This professor lacks way to much. He is extremely boring and marks extremely difficult on the midterm. Even if you think you know this subject like the back of your hand, you will find difficulty with the midterm. I don't recommend taking a class from this man.
Jeff is very boring. He reads straight out of the text book. It is not worth it to go to class. If you are good at teaching yourself, then this is a good guy to take the class with. He is quite monotone. Needs a haircut. His tests and assignments are fair though. Just read the textbook and you will do fine.
This class is extremely boring, m'kay. He keeps saying how easy the questions are, m'kay. If you ask for help outside of class, you will leave with more questions than you had, m'kay. I skipped a lot of classes, m,kay.
boring class, boring prof. Be prepaired for hour long class arguments on how to define retarded subjects like what is a "shadow". I hated this class period..avoid if possible.
Jeff may be boring in Logic 100.. but get to higher level philosophy classes and he is great.. he starts great discussions and he is not one-sided at all.. he leaves things up to you though, so things like due dates aren't given.. so you have to make sure you bear down and work on your own
Very good teacher; loves discussion and encourages difference of opinion. If you don't know what he's talking about, do the readings and it will make more sense. Doesn't give due dates for things. If you don't like to think, don't take this class. In fact, get the hell out of my university!
This prof exibits the largest lack of ligical thinking I have ever come across. His assignments and exams are marked totally different from his lectures. He doesn't even think the text is correct! aviod at all costs
If they still used the dunce cap, this guy would have to put it on his own head. Boring, and uninformative. Read the notes off his website, and you will learn a lot more than if you sit through his so called instructional lectures. If you do not need to take a class with this guy, don't!!
Fairly straighforward class, but your screwed if you miss something. Tried to get hold of him several times for help and he was never available during his office hours. Avoid this class if you can. 0/4 attemps at office time ...
I've yet to come across a prof who can match the enthusiasm of prof. Vancha. If you follow his instructions and think, you should be able to ace his class. Don't practice your logic or come to class and don't expect a good grade
He's an awesome Prof, he lets you take home the midterm and pick the week you want to take it home, the class picks the due dates of the few assignments he gives .. how many Profs let you do that? He's an all around good guy!
Can't say enough good things about him. Best teacher in the university. We need more like him.
This guy reminds me of weird Al...I liked him though, he was a great teacher. The class itself is boring, but what can you do. He was always available to tutor and reponded to my emails within hours! Great teacher for a boring subject!
pretty bad teacher, marks extremely hard on tests.... he was there to help me in his office, but he just ended up confusing me more then before.... our class average on our midterm was like a 55 which is pretty horrible for a first year course that is supposed to be easy
Read your textbook because it's the only lifesaver you'll have in this class. Jeff talks in circles and I think he makes up words.
Do not take this class from this prof. Nice guy, enthusiastic, but unable to explain things clearly and plainly. Final exam BRUTAL! Material is straightforward, but not explained well in text or in class. Then to add to the confusion, he argues with the text! Very annoying class. Stressful.
An interesting class and an interesting approach to teaching. Some of the discussion was at a higher level than most 200 level classes, but most of the students were older anyways. The work load is very reasonable, and Jeff is pretty good about being flexible on mid-term dates and the paper. It beat taking a lecture based class.

worst prof. EVER. i think i learn more from NOT going to class.
I'm not at all surprised that many students here loathed Mr. Vancha's class, most people hate having to think. A very thought-provoking and personable prof. I would take a class of his again.
Awesome prof. Not rigid on due dates, and decides course content democratically. A good marker, and he's very smart. He welcomes criticism of his views, almost like he feeds on it to guide the class. This made the couse very philosophical, and challenging!
Really terrible class! He's an alright prof but the textbook helps explain more than he does! Overall...not worth the time, or effort!
Very good teacher. Class average was low but all I did is go to class and listen and i got an easy 86%
He is super interesting and really keeps me wanting to learn this subject rumoured to be intensely boring.
Looks like Chad Kroeger, sounds like Mr. Mackey from south Park. I was bored, and whenever assignments/test rolled around I was confused, because I think they are more intent on stumping you, than they are finding out what you've learned.
While I found the work load fairly light, and the text book very helpful and clear, Jeff was a bit contradictory at times. Overall yes, if you dont find logic interesting you will find this class a bore, but really its not that bad. Just pay attention and follow along. Take time to study on your own and youll be fine. But hey, its better than math.
I've taken two classes from Jeff. His method is different, but once you adjust I think you'll find it liberating. He really wants his students to think critically and examine issues from multiple angles. Not a traditional professor; so he scares some away. I'm upset that the Phil dept won't offer STS anymore. It's a valuable and important subject.
I think he needs to bridge the expectation gap between lecture/ course contents and examination/tests.
good teacher, easy class, make sure you keep up with textbook/problems and it is simple
I barely paid attention in this class. Vancha is just too confusing. I found it easier to learn everything on my own from the textbook. Going to class was a total waste of time. Assignments are worth 10% each for a total of 30% of your mark and he chooses difficult questions that aren't covered in the text.
Sat at the front of the class and talked the whole semester, no notes. I never read an article assigned and still got a decent grade. I used lecture time to perfect my computer game skills. He gives you the midterm and final before you write it. Class discussion was stimulating sometimes. If your in ENGG take this elective so you have some downtime
Unless you go to class and worship his teaching methods forget about ease. I stayed home followed the text and got 80's on all the assignments and tests. He proceeded to strip me of the right to write my final. Attend class, but dont expect to learn anything.
i really don't know how you guys think he's boring. i've had worse...profs who just make powerpoints straight from the book and who don't put any of their input into lectures, at least he does! he may follow from the book with his notes, but what else are they supposed to do? that's their guide.
Awful. I hated this class, he was weird and not interesting at all
Not very good. Prototypical "head in the clouds" philosophy teacher... easy marker though.
Awful. He doesn't give notes. He writes random words on the board and constantly changes topics so it's near impossible to take notes while he talks. No clue what you need to know. I had to study the text hardcore for the exams and the assignments are unrelated. Would not recommend! PS-he looks like a cross between Weird Al, Chad Kroeger & a poodle
He's terrible at lecturing because he does not explain the concepts at thoroughly enough for a 100 level course in Philosophy. He marks fairly easy but does not give feedback.
Great prof. I suspect most of the negative comments here come from people who expect to be spoon fed information, rather than working to understand concepts. This man wants you to think for yourself. I found him totally refreshing and entertaining.
I struggled in this class, but he was a VERY kind marker (sure I should have failed). I missed a lot and missed readings, so my mark reflected this. I did enjoy his teaching a lot, though. He's quirky, friendly, and tries hard to make a boring subject interesting. Don't expect to be spoon fed. Do your readings, pay attention, and you'll do swell.
With Vancha,it's not about being told what to think. If you want that, go to Piercey, who is also a super prof but completely different. JL wants discussions in his classes. But this doesn't mean you have to talk to do well enough(I got a high 70's while never talking). If you actually like Philosophy and thinking for yourself, take his class.
He's awesome, made me love Critical Thinking! if you read the textbook and go to class you will do fine.
He really tries to get the class talking&the issues we discussed were interesting. He gives you the questions that will be on the midterm/final in advance. Isn't very helpful or descriptive on essays because he wants students to "think for themselves" which makes things difficult. He is a nice man and like people who participate. I recommend him.
Jeff is an awesome prof. If you attend lectures and attempt to engage the material in class, you'll do fine. He was always willing to chat and help out after class. He is a very fair marker. Personally, I think he looks like Shawn Michaels from the WWE.
Jeff is a great prof who keeps lectures intersting and relevant. sometime he lectures too slowly to cover everything. Watchh out for long exams and questions covering what was never taught.
Amazing! Never in my life have I wanted to sit in a class and not miss out on a day! He encourages students to talk within class and question him! AWESOME PROF! :)
Jeff keeps the class entertained, and is quite funny. I PERSONALLY found the class slightly difficult, & ended up teaching myself most of the lessons via textbook. Encourages students to take part in discussion during & after class. Very easy going guy; one class, my friend came dressed in a wolf costume & sat up front. Very fun class overall.
Chill guy, trys to keep lectures interesting and is very personal! He is helpful, great prof!
Very chill guy. Made topics interesting and I'm sure he would be a good prof if you actually like Philosophy. Fair marker, decent feedback, an overall easy class. I think the class just wasn't my style
Overall a good prof. My only complaint is he takes a long time to cover simple topics. We were supposed to cover 8 chapters throughout the semester and only covered 6 because of his slow speed of covering topics. Also, I found i was teaching myself the topics through the text more useful than his lectured. Easy class if you put in the effort
I really hated this class; I just thought it was really boring and hard. Vancha is a really nice, chill guy, though. He actually cares about the students. But I always had a hard time concentrating in class. He often goes off topic to a point that I don't even know what he is talking about anymore. Wouldn't recommend this class.
He seems like a great guy I just hated him as a teacher. I found that I basically had to teach myself the whole class because he goes off topic a lot. I really didn't end up listening much. His notes are a bone structure but you pretty much teach yourself. No one actually went to class. Very unclear on his expectations, very vague on assignments
Seems like a nice guy, very laid back, but relatively useless in terms of lecture quality, its insanely boring and you wont end up picking up a thing. Everything i learned was from text. Assignments/final arent even on stuff we covered in class. Avoid if possible
Jeff is a fantastic teacher who uses a socratic teaching method. He goes against the textbook - very easy going and if you put the work in you will see great results. Don't BS him, or he'll give it right back to you. Lectures were a little boring but it IS a philosophy class. Lenient on due dates and his exams are straightforward.
The worst Prof I have ever had. He is an unfair marker, his classes are so unbelievably boring, and he is an awful teacher. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't present it in a way that you can understand. He rambles on about nothing. Honestly, the worst class I've ever taken. Avoid is possible.
Not the best prof I've had. He has his moments where he's really funny, and he has some really interesting and crazy philosophies, but I found him to be boring, and not that clear at explaining things.
he is a boringggggg professor,he often goes off the topic and I never get the sense what is he talking about. However, he is a pretty laid back person, you don't have to come to class all the time, you don't have to hand in the assignment on time, you don't need take any quizzes and no midterm, plus take home final. so take his class!!!
BUY THE TEXT! Talks at a doctorate level. Repeats the same thing in different ways that all seem to sound the same but still doesn't make sense. The book is the best investment for this class at it makes everything clear. His lecture notes are just retelling the text book. Only went to class to know when assignments and exams would be.
Seems like a nice guy, but lectures are extremely boring and I had trouble not skipping them. However the topics covered in class are pretty hard to grasp so if you don't attend class you will have a hard time understanding concepts and executing them successfully for assignmentsmidterm
Unfortunately I will not be taking another class from this prof. Although this is a introductory level class he spoke as though we were all in fourth year philosophy degrees. I had no clue what he was saying and although i went to class every day, right up to the midterm, the midterm review had nothing to do with the notes and lectures he spoke of.
Well, I took his critical thinking class so I didn't have to take a math. I had rather taken a math class. Jeffs class was brutal. The class was very boring and hard to understand, he talked to our class as if we were philosophy majors. I get it is a philosophy class, but it is not my life passion like he made it sound like it should be. DONT TAKE.
You can pretty easily get an A without going. If you show up once a week and kind of pay attention and take notes it's interesting and actually worth learning about most of the time. Good class to take if you are interested in the subject at all.
His lectures are a little meandering, but his tests are easy and he is incredibly sweet and helpful.
He is very friendly, and there if you ask for help. However, he speaks in riddles. So mind as well just google it, or use the text book. Because he is no help
Jeff is a pretty relaxed and casual professor. His lectures are hilarious but sometimes he is confusing when talking about the subject material. The assignments required are easy to do and with only two exams, the course isn't too hard. However, the lectures can get boring and its a struggle to want to attend class.
Jeff's funny and interested in what he is teaching but the lectures are so boring and all over the place that it's so hard to keep engaged in what is going on. I attended class and it helped somewhat but it was not of great benefit. The textbook will be your life line plus he uses it for all assignments so its a must have!
He is a pretty cool guy. The class is laid out in the syllabus. Exams are straight forward, similar to the assignments. The assignments are from the textbook. Attend class, understand the concepts and you will do great.
Gets extremely off topic.
The dude is Easy and his lecturers are awesome. Got an A+ No Problem.
He's the Best Professor in University I have ever had!!! Very enthusiastic about what he does, really thought provoking, never met another Prof as good as this one. One of a kind Gem.
Amazing prof, very funny, insightful lectures, sometimes off topic, has a very good understanding of Philosophy buy the text its a must, you will need it for the exam and assignments, which are straightforward and easy. side note he is not on UR courses which is a bit annoying, otherwise great class. easy and enjoyable class
Great intro class, very clear about what he wants from assignments. Midterm and final questions given beforehand so no reason not to do well on exams. Three papers given, very straightforward. Class discussion flows easily.
Not a bad prof, but not very good either. His lectures are pretty boring and pointless, definitely not a class you have to attend. He doesn't have a lot of assignments and marks pretty easily, but unless you have a definite interest in philosophy I wouldn't take his class.
Didn't understand a word he said. Completely learnt everything from the textbook.
Jeff was a funny guy, he got off topic easily and liked to rant about things, he's not a terrible prof sometimes the class was really boring or hard to pay attention to, he mostly read off the slides and some what explained them, I'd suggest reading the textbook for more information and using the slides as a guideline. He does lots of examples.
One of the best profs at the U ofr. Too bad he is leaving us. What a treat his class was for me. I'm not a Philosophy major so I can understand why people say he goes off topic a fair amount. But hes always relavant & keeps people engaged and on their toes!! I had a genuine desire to aquire as much as I could from this man and his field of study.
To enjoy a class taught by Vancha you need to do your research on the course materials ahead of time. If not, the classes will be boring. Investment is key to passing his courses.
