Class period is boring but easy homework assignments and easy test. In order to get an A, you have to write 8 page paper at the end of semester

This has been one of my favorite classes at Fullerton College. Mr. Vanderpool has a genuine passion for this area of study. He encourages his students to voice opinion, and rewards participation well. Be willing to read a lot, and be prepared for lengthy discussions. Promise, though - it's fun.
Mr. Vanderpool is AWESOME!!!! He genuinely cares about his students, he wants you to learn and is very helpful, and has a great sense of humor. I totally recommend him you wont regret it.
He's so funny and entertaining. Covers a lot of material, but is good at it. He explains everything thoroughly and clearly, and if you don't understand it the material, he will go over it until you do. Great teacher and person. Highly recommended.
He is very nice and helpful. If you go to class and take notes this class is very easy.
great teacher, his analogies are like stand up comedy: pure genius. i cant wait to take another class with him to enjoy his lectures. hard to stay awake at times... but worth it
great teacher so far very funny, and easy going
Great guy, fun class. Interesting subject.
This guy is real cool. Very understanding, he wants you to pass so bad. Just make sure you participate in class discussion, because he will get discouraged. One time he walked out on us in the middle of class. He seemed more sad than angry though. If you c
Fairly easy class. Homework is usually very light.
Nice guy but never in class. He is absent all the time. I finally gave up coming to class and dropped because of it. Waste of money and time.
I think Mr.Vanderpool is one of the most insightful and humorous teachers in the enitre college. I almost didnt care for Philosohpy until I took Mr.Vanderpool's class. I recommend going to this class!
I personally would never take him again. I find the material and the lecture dull even though he's an interesting person and tries hard to make interesting discussions. Good: EASY EASY class. BAD: Boring and he's always cancelling classes. Maybe it's because I realized I don't care for phil but if you just want an easy A take this class.
Mr. Vanderpool is my favorite teacher. He really goes over the material with you. Before I took this class I thought philosophy was dull and boring. Now it is my favorite class! Go MR. VANDERPOOL!
I DIDNT KNOW WHAT THE **** WAS PHILOSOPHY OTHER THAN PLATO AND SOCRATES BUT TAKING THIS CLASS I LEARNED A LOT FROM IT. HE IS A GREAT TEACHER WHO KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT AND WILL HELP YOU GET A GOOD GRADE. AN EASY CLASS TO TAKE AND VERY INTERESTING SUBJECT MATTER. HE MAKES THE WHOLE CLASS LAUGH WITH HIS GREAT SENCE OF HUMOR AND JOKES.
I dropped the class because he never showed up and I got frustrated. But when he did, he was a nice guy, knew his subject well. I found lecture to be a bit boring, tests/quizzes are easy. If you really want to learn, I wouldn't recommend taking him.
He's funny and he knows his stuff! Even though the class was mostly lecture, I learned a lot of knew things. The essays are easy, but the multiple choice questions are a little confusing. TAKE HIM FOR PHIL!
What a great proffessor. Very funny and good lectures. Class is usually shortened. Take him and you wont regret it!
great guy, fun teacher. do the readings and the optional paper and you will be fine, only a few tests and grades on a curve.readings can be tricky but he clarifies them very well.
this is a terrible teacher who allows his personal life to effect his teaching. He never showed up and sometimes we would have only a few classes a month. Then, after you have forgotten everything he had taught you because it was so long ago the tests were hard and he graded really hard even though he was never there to teach the stuff! terrible!
Omg this class was a waste of time...His test were nothing like the exam review ... he talks about the most random things ever his homework was a joke i dont even think u get credit for it!!!But he is a nice guy just not a good teacher!
i dont know what kind of idiots the people below me are. vanderpool is a great teacher. he does miss class sometimes but he is an excellent teacher. i learned alot, he is very kick back. you would have to not come to class or be an idiot not to do well
Mr.Vanderpool is an interesting and a bit on the eccentric side professor. He is very kind and patient, and seems honestly interested in what the students have to say. He has a huge emphasis on discussion, it's usually the sum of the class. He enjoys his subject of teaching a lot, and that makes him enthusiastic. A great person.
this guy...he NEVER showed up to class. EVER. it was so confusing knowing what was on the tests...i wouldn't take him. you think it would be easy because there were no classes. but its the complete opposite. he expects you to know the material...no no no! don't do it to yourself
TAKE VANDERPOOL. period. He's is so helpful and actually cares about his students. Go to his office hours and he will explain everything. I loved his test reviews because he made it crystal clear what's on the test. Read book + do the exercises and you should easily get an A. His tests are HEAVILY curved. and he is my fav professor @ FJC
This professor is a joke. I took him for phil. and he was very hard to understand. I would not recommend anyone take this class. He is unclear in his material and the tests never make any sense and is alwayd implies you take logic over again becasue it is to hard. I didn;t lie him and dont recommend him in the future
Best. Teacher. Ever. He's hilarious (anyone who thinks he's not does not have a sense of humor). Totally willing to help you out with anything you're having trouble with. The content is not easy, but he does his best to put everything in layman's terms. My favorite teacher.
Excellent lectures, approachable, insightful, cynical and funny. Missed class A LOT. Multiple choice and short essays on the tests. I didn't always do well on them, but he grades on a curve, so in the end I got an A. Also, IF you want an A in the class, there is an *optional* 8-page paper to do on a relevant topic of your choice.
Very funny and keeps the classroom feel light. The exams are SUPER HARD but he allows use of a note card and grades on a curve. I got 17 out of 30 and had an A after the curve. Cancels class often. He doesn't participate with students much and appears to look over our heads in lectures which is kind of off putting.
man, this guy is one of the best prof. i have had. his has a interesting and funny personality and is teachs with an interest in his chosen subject. smart guy too
GREAT TEACHER. He definitely knows what he is talking about. There is a good reason to why he misses class so dont be upset when he does. Test are fairly easy, just study the lexture notes and you will do fine. Took alot of great things from his class and definitely recommend it to anyone.
He has a funny obsession with Michelle Phifer. He is funny and sincere. The people who thought he wasn't clear must have only taken the notes that he wrote on the board (just some key words) but if you actually take thorough notes, this is a really easy and fun class(you can even get by w/out reading). I am taking him again next semester.
he is a great teacher. he knows what he is talking about. there are about 10 1.pg paper you have to write. they are super easy. you are aloud to have a cheat sheet for all the tests. just take good notes and pay attention and you will do fine
he is a great teacher! he doesn't take attendance so you don't have to show up for class, but the notes he writes on the board is what the test is on. he's very helpful and funny.
Vanderpool will not return you e-mails and tests you on ideas he hardly went over. He is one of the worst teachers I have had at Fullerton College.
Must read and although attendance isn't required, you have to show up in order to pass. He is very helpful. You want a bit of a challenge, take him. He's nice and cracks some jokes during class. He does make this class a little bit easier then other logic classes.
I did not enjoy his class. He graded only on exams, with little points being available. Didn't give homework, but that might've helped. This class is not useful; we learned to organize/identify arguments. He didn't teach any fallacies, which are very helpful tools for this area. On the plus side, he was pretty nice when it comes to grading/curves.
Super easy and he is funny. Take the class. You learn a lot.
He has a great sense of humor, but unfortunately my class didn't. You would enjoy the class if you engage in discussion and conversation. He's a very organized teacher and lets you know exactly what he expects. PAY ATTENTION! You'll pass easy.
To reply to another comment posted: he does teach about fallacies. The class is incredibly easy, he allows you to take a notecard on all ur exams as well as multiple note cards on your final. The grade is also curved. People who didn't atleast get a B must have not made good note cards. The class can be boring sometimes though.Theres rarely HW
Vanderpool is a bit of a goober, but enjoyable to have as a professor. He can have a bit of a monotone at times which can make it difficult to listen, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem if you got a decent night's sleep. My only qualm with him was that he was sometimes confusing/unclear when answering students' questions. Overall good prof.
First off, he is hilarious and very approachable. It's a pretty easy class if you just take notes. The class can get a bit boring. You basically only have essays, the occasional take-home quiz, and exams. If you're not a good tester or you space out often, don't take the class. He allows a notecard on every exam.
Mr. Vanderpool is hilarious!!! Took him for Logic and Critical Thinking and it was all basically critical thinking and was awesome! He repeated things from class to class which got a little boring. So easy to pass, just tests and occasional quiz/HW. Allows a notecard on every test. One of my fav teachers so far!!!
He is certainly one of my favorite professors! He wants to be funnier than he really is, but you can't help but laugh. His tests are not too hard, and he gives out extra work here and there.I just found out he is letting my class take home our final :) He is a GREAT professor and I am planning on taking him again in the future.
Amazing teacher! Take him and you wont regret it. Just attend class everyday and do the assigned reading. No essays, four mid-terms, lowest score dropped and some homework. Extremely nice and helpful!
you can tell he ejoys his job,he really want everybody to understand concepts and loves discussing them, a few 1 page response papers due easy and a few take home quizzes and 4 exams he lets u write notes on a 3x5 card for exams, lectures are pretty thurough, he is pretty funny in a nerdy teacher type way, would definatly take him again
He was a very awesome professor. He always would stop several times during lecture and ask for questions. He was straight forward and easy going. I really enjoyed his class and would recommend him to anyone! He is great!
TAKE HIM!!! I really learned a lot in his class. He is helpful, funny, and very intelligent.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! :D he is clear, engaging, & extremely helpful! he will do anything to help his students get an A. Just take notes from lectures, do assigned readings, & you'll be fine. A notecard is allowed for every test, & he drops the lowest exam! AWESOME teacher! you won't regret it! :)
He was really fun and made philosophy reaaalllyyy interesting, I would recommend taking him DEF. Especially if you have no interest in the subject cause he WILL make you love it. He is hilarious and you will DEF get a lot of laughs from him. I always looked forward to this class DEF amazing :D
love vanderpool! as others have mentioned: he really does seem to love his job. teaches with a passion. extremely nice and approachable. very funny and makes class fun. homework assignments are doubled spaced, 1 page essays.. super easy. there are 7 of them throughout the semester. a few take-home quizzes and allows a notecard on exams. take him!!!
Awesome professor ! Very intelligent and entertaining. Doesn't take attendance but he makes philosophy so interesting that you always want to come to class =) He's hilarious and really nice too !
Awsome lectures. Allows a study index card for exams. Offers extra credit. Small amount of homework.
Jeff made the sometimes complicated world of Philosophy very clear during his lectures. The limited HW would be a one page, double spaced, 12-point font response paper. He lets you fill up an index card on both sides to use on the 3 tests. The extra credit is an 8-page response paper on a previous topic discussed in class.
his hw assignments are only double-spaced 1 page papers that he assigns every few weeks. very very easy. quizzes are take-home and only about 5 questions each. allows you to use a note card on all 3 exams. final is take-home. everything he tests you on is always the main topics discussed in class. the way he lectures makes things very memorable.
Cancels class a lot but really nice guy. He's funny too and always ends class 30 minutes early. Seems to be popular though.. it took me three semesters to finally get him as all his classes are always filled up the first few days of registration!!
Hands down one of the most knowledgeable professors at FC. Dr. Vanderpool is always willing to help students understand the material better and is quite entertaining while doing so. He made the class very interesting. Take him!
SO UNORGANIZED- take someone who actually sticks to a schedule and doesn't cancel class 5 times before the semester is even over.
Vanderpool is great teacher, when he teaches he is pretty funny. His test though are a bit difficult and you have to really study to get a good grade.
Vanderpool is a hilarious guy. Always funny and entertaining. His work though, is a different story. When he assigns a paper, which is no more than 1 page usually, DO IT. It will save your grade. His tests aren't as easy as he says, but passing the class is far from impossible. 15 point extra credit due at the end of the semester.
Funny and nice guy, gets annoyed when students are late though. Three tests that require short answers and are pretty hard but he allows a cheat card. Read, pay attention in lecture (can be boring) and ask questions when he reviews for tests. Short papers for hw and give 15 point e.c. at the end of the semester
Make sure that you refer to him only as "Master Who Knows all Things". Just kidding. He is a good teacher.
Very caring and helpful professor. Always there when you need help in his office or by email. Show interest in his subject and he will bend the grading for you. Best teacher I have taken at F.C. so far...
Very low key funny, entertaining teacher. EASY 1pg papers and extra credit project at the end. His multiple choice questions are really difficult, but his essay questions are very easy. Not much effort required in assignments/participation but you do have to read the text. Really nice guy and very intelligent. DONT BE LATE TO HIS CLASS!
Great teacher. Extremely helpful and very nice guy, One of the top if not the best Professor i have taken.
TAKE HIM!! IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE PHILOSOPHY HE IS A MUST TAKE!! SUCH AN AMAZING PROF!! HELPFUL, UNDERSTANDING, FUNNY ETC! HE IS AMONG THE TOP PROFS AT FJC!! THE MATERIAL IS SO INTERESTING AS WELL REALLY MAKES YOU BETTER IN LIFE! ONE OF THE BEST CLASSES I HAVE TAKEN NO REGRETS! TESTS ARE A BIT TRICKY, MAKE SURE TO COPY ALL LECTURE NOTES & YOU'RE GOOD!
I felt he wasn't very thorough with his lectures, just seemed to speed along cutting classes a bit b/c of his glaucoma or not showing up at all. I dropped and retook with Bruce Hanson who explained the concepts much better and had a more enthusiastic approach to philosophy. Vanderpool does not allow electronics to be used.
Dr. Vanderpool is an amazing teacher! I had little interest in philosophy but now after taking his class i am so interested in the subject! His grading system is simple and test are fairly easy. Some days I didnt want his lectures to end. Just show up and DONT BE LATE! he will tell you to leave. TAKE HIM you wont regret it :] :]
He's such an amazing professor, he's very willing to help students and is very passionate about philosophy. His kindness is very refreshing and a funny man. You won't regret taking him! His lectures are just great!!
He's a great professor! He made philosophy actually interesting. Make sure you arrive to class on time otherwise he'll kick you out.
My favorite teacher thus far. Interesting guy! I looked forward to every class.
Overall Vanderpool is a great professor. If I had a chance to go back and pick another professor, I would still want to pick him. My only complaint is that his essay questions on the exam are very vague. He expects very specific answers. You also get points taken off for "too long answers" so you have to guess which information seems most important
Coolest professor in the world. Super energetic and has the funniest sense of humor. It was almost like being at an improv. The class itself is kinda hard, you really have to grasp concepts. I worked hard and got a B. (Usually an A student). But hes super hilarious. I'd take him again. 1010 would recommend.
Really strict on tardiness so beware if you are taking him early in the morning! Lectures were always relevant & he kept them interesting. Grading system is simple if it is like his summer course (4 exams w lowest exam dropped and optional final). He is a great guy and will definitely help if you reach out. Thanks Vanderpool!
Be in class pay attention and you'll see the same stuff on the tests. Study your notes and it'll brush off straight to the test. He's a great logician.
He's a tough teacher but you really learn a lot with him. There's a lot of reading but it's easy and you need it to pass. He's super funny and very helpful and canceled class 5 or 6 times. He reviews the first 10-15 minutes and if you show up after he's done reviewing then he wont let you stay. He's a great teacher you just need to do the work.
was failing in beginning then he started handing out free points towards end of semester and lots of 1 page response papers for easy points he doesn't want to fail anyone so don't worry if you don't understand everything or fail exams it will get better i promise gives 5 page EC paper for 10 pts in the end so DO THAT! lets you use notecard for exam
One of the best professors I've had! So funny! Though he comes prepared with a set lecture, he is willing to entertain questions and ideas presented by students throughout the class. The tests are more lecture heavy than reading heavy, but the reading does show up on the tests. Ask questions and read and you'll do great.
Great teacher! He missed class a couple times (which is a plus for me) but it won't effect what you learn. He has a couple 1 page response papers which were very easy just asking for your opinion on subjects. The tests were easy if you just show up to class and take notes. He lets you have a small cheat sheet for the tests anyway!
Vanderpool is super nice! He cancels class often, because of his illness. I found him very interesting to listen to and quite funny. He lets you have notes for the exams and curves the final grade (86.6% for an A, for example). He's not very fast at replying to emails, but he is very approachable so I would recommend going to his office hours.
Mixed on Vanderpool. I had to drop the class, he wasn't communicating with me. He gives good lectures, funny guy, hard to talk to outside of class, DO ALL OF YOUR PAPERS DON'T MISS ANY. His exams are hard. Ex A) READ ABOUT IT B) SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE RIGHT C) BOTH. The exams make you doubt yourself, got a C- on an exam I studied 10hrs for...
Dr. Vanderpool is one of the best professors that I am probably going to experience in community college before transferring. I would seriously advise you to take him because he is going to retire soon. The class does involve a bit of reading but his grading system is 80% tests and he drops lowest one(final is optional.) If you want the A, READ!
Vanderpool is the GOAT at FCC. His lectures are super funny and he never makes you bored at all. As he is a nice guy and respects you with all your needs, don't go on your phone or anything because he will get mad and it's not like he is a bad/boring professor. Read the text although most of his questions are from the lecture. Go to office hours 2
First test was ridiculously hard and unpractical got a D and then the rest of the tests got As. Final exam was a take home exam. Funny person terrible teacher. Didn't use book at all. Print out lectures and write everything in there that he says cuz that's what is on the tests. Tests were true false multiple choice and short answers.
