interesting teacher, but you're going to have try extra hard in this course. this may be a course for people who don't major Biology. Ask ?s at all times when something is unclear. advice: be present at least 99% of the time.
very linient on the lab and test were pretty easy..just study
i'm not a fan of science. this class was relatively easy but i learned more from the BIO CD's then from his lectures. lots of information, make sure you have time to study and do a lot of reading.
If you are a book person or a bio major or interested in bio, this is the class for you. I'm not much a bio person, but more of a Geology and i still had to study really hard to get by. If you don't get it right off the bat, quickly ask questions. Hard class for me =(
Wonderful teacher with a great personality.Younger man, so can relate to students.Lectures are clear.Tests are fair.As long as you show up to class and study a bit, you should do fine. Highly recommend.
i actually really liked Dr. Watanabe, but don't take this class if you don't have time to study as much as you should/need to for his tests (since the class is based on 3 quizzes, 3 tests + 1 research paper)also, missing class has major consequences.

he has funny lectures but tend to be a lil scattered with his information. his lab is very unorganized compared to barnby's. He gives little directions and just lets you go. But he is a nice guy and very funny
I actually Loved "Dr. Jeff" a great teacher & actually made BIO fun.HE is the only one that can sum up a cell to "A tiny ocean packet". Its not an easy class but like anything else study and you will be fine
GREAT TEACHER!!! Organized well! Class is alot of laughs!! You need to study hard and ask sooo many questions! I think he's hot!
Funny professor...definitely keep you awake. I can't say his hard b/c all science classes are hard...lots of memorization. I would definitely take his other classes if there's a chance.
He was a very energetic and lively teacher. Definitely interested in the material, despite always having despided bio. He was difficult tho. Definitely demanded the best of his students.
Very good teacher and very nice. His lectures are entertaining and are upbeat. I thought he was a good teacher. The class is a lot of work though, I studied really hard and got a B in the class. This class is great for a beginning Biology class. I remember I first saw him and I thought he was a student, he is young, but a Good teacher.
its all good. all lecture base with a group project.mixed exams X3 multiple choise T/F short answer
Watanabe is quite the enthusiastic teacher. His lectures always match the slides. He's willing to post up his lecture online. As long as you do your reading to keep up with the class, you'll do fine. Tests are a little hard. They get easier with more stydying. Would take his other class just to look at him. ;) He's a hottie!
This guy is lame. He teaches like Biology is common knowledge. Tests are hard. Not very organized.Don't take his class.
overall, a personable and interesting teacher; tests were pretty easy, though the subject (marine biology, which is more ecology-based) wasn't really for me.
he's very organized. you'll have to work hard if you want a good grade. he's a good guy, and you can tell that he interested in what he's teaching.
This teacher is good. Especially his lectures are so entertaining and interesting. Because of his lectures, i remember most of the lectures without reading them. I really want to get an A but i got B.:)
The better of the two Bio-130 profs. His lecture style in goal oriented (that is, he teaches what will be on the test, not just a general overview.) The tests don't pull any punches, you have to know the material, but at least the class will prepare you for them.
He is very knowledgable about his area of expertise which helps the learning process. He is very patient and personable. The class in general is hard but he makes it feasable. He is a great dancer
Don't take him! His final exam guide doesn't help at all. It is totally different from the final exam.
He is a very intelligent, patient and extremely helpful professor. His lectures are clear and get to the point. He is always willing to clarify when necessary and he will always take questions and comments. Plus he is funny and tries to make his lectures as interesting as possible with pictures and animations. Take him!!
I would definately take his class again. His first test was hard, but the rest are easy after you learn his test styles. Even though it was an hour and a half class i actually enjoyed it because he made it interesting. He has a story for everything and they are pretty funny/nerdy. Would definatley recommend him for a teacher
This guy is pretty good. Class is very interesting and there are alot of hands on activities which helps the students learn much better. His test are not easy and you must study to pass. Test are based on lecture so make sure you take notes. i missed a day and i got a little lost so make sure you show up to class everyday.
Definetly the better of the 2 Biology Teachers. He is pretty interesting, and you can tell he knows his stuff. Just make sure you attend class, his tests are pretty damn hard, but as long as you get C's on all the tests and do all the HW, and Go to Labs, you will get a B in the class. I would take him again for a different class.
His test typos drive me crazy. I wish he would fix them BEFORE giving us the tests. He's getting sloppy, and the students are the ones who have to suffer the consequences of that. I would've enjoyed the class a lot more if it hadn't been for that which is unfair for the students.
Keep in mind, science is always hard. Teacher aren't magic. He is a great teacher, specially for those who don't get science. Gives lots of examples. Not much homework. What he teaches you, is what's on the test. Fun, and interesting. You can use this information outside of class. Best science teacher ever!!!
Nice, solid teacher. Book-based slides are peppered with entertaining anecdotes about his adventures abroad that bring out the nerd in everyone. Attendance isn't enforced but missing a class will make you feel behind. If only every teacher had this much energy...
Tests are hard. Must go to most of lecture to be able to answer questions on the test. Be sure to write down everything he says during lecture b/c it's always little things that end up on the tests. Go to labs + do online assignment then it's pretty easy to get an A/B.
aiite
He is by far the best professor I have ever had, and the class was very interesting. Take his classes. They are all great!
Such a great teacher! Passion for biology (especially marine) and it shows. Definitely need to read the book, but tests mostly off his slides and information that he stresses during lecture. If he has repeated it a alot, expect to be tested! I haven't taken the final yet, but B or C, i'd be interested in another of his classes.
Fantastic professor in every sense. His lectures are very clear and interesting. Approachable, fun, and passionate about his field. Show up and pay attention!
I took his online class, but we were required to go on self field trips to certain places to learn about environmental sustainability. Don't treat this class like a joke, because you will have to read from the book a lot in order to do quizzes/tests and such.
Prof. is AMAZING!! He truly knows what he is talking about! This was by far my favorite class! Such a passionate teacher and you can really see it in his teachings. Always makes class fun and interesting with activities and videos. Just take notes on his wonderful powerpoint lectures and study before tests and you'll get the grade you want.
Very knowledgable. Not an easy A, but if you work hard and listen to lectures you should do well. Amazing professor, would definately take his class again!
The teacher is very helpful but the class make me feel like a mess firstable the codes that you needed for the class were not in the book at all. Also the homework due dates from the last semester and it looked like the teacher dont care about it at all. He is also smart but not organized at all.
Very enthusiastic, funny, knowledgeable about subject, helpful, all around good teacher. :)
Dr. Watanabe is great, He knows what he's talking about and he knows how to translate the thick material so it's easy for us to comprehend. But this class is no easy A, the tests are definitely challenging so get ready to buckle down and study.
Only the best teacher ever. So passionate about ecology and the Marine Environment it's contagious. Take this class if you want to learn about and learn to appreciate the world around you. Show up, take good notes and ask questions. An A is possible if you're willing to put a little effort in!
I took this class online, which IMO is the way to go. The assignments aren't hard, the quizzes are easy, the field trip is easy, but the tests are actually somewhat challenging (despite being online). He gives perfect scores on assignments however, so in the end my test grade was offset by 100's in other things. I ended up with an A.
He's young, funny, and passionate! I left his class with a different outlook on the environment. His lectures are exciting and interesting, and he always tries to make the lectures relatable. Yes, his tests are a tad difficult. But if you do all the labs, and homework you can at least get a B. More importantly, you will learn and have fun. :)
He is really cool and outstanding teacher. His tests, and assignment are pretty easy. But on the exams, the discussion questions are very challenging. I recommended that you should take this class. :D
Good teacher, he is very clear about his expectations of you, when and how to do assignments and tests. You do have to work hard in this class in order to get a good grade. My only gripe with him is that he only gives you 65 minutes to finish 60 questions on a test (to prevent cheating. For me I need a little more time to process the questions.
He is funny and honest. He does an amazing job of connecting his lectures to real-world applications. His expectations are clear, and he puts a lot of responsibility on the student. Any student that isn't good at being independent will fall behind and might learn discipline from him. He is amazing and inspiring.
Awesome professor! Very funny, loves to interact with students, and does a great job of teaching the material. Keep in mind, however, that this is a Biology class, which is hard no matter the professor. Study hard for all the tests and take advantage of the few extra credit opportunities that he offers.
He always said, "what you watanabe when you grow up?" I swear it was like his catch phrase, but I sure as heck liked it. Don't remember learning much biology, though I didn't go much, but I loved his teaching style. He talked a lot, and he sounded like an American Sean Connery. Other than that, we didn't disect anything...sad.
He is a medium professor. He isn't too hard or too easy. In order to pass his exams with good grades, you must study his lecture notes that you take in class very well. study for a lot of hours and its a guarantee that you will pass his exam with a c or b or a. Don't study your book when studying sinc ehe makes his exams out of lecture notes.
It was a very tough class, but I was very happy to pass his class with a "B". His tests are very long and the questions seem a little confusing to me. I read that book from front to back and thought that I was learning the material until I took his exams. Overall, I really enjoyed his class and learned a lot from it.
I'm taking his class right now. He is an amazing teacher. I learned so much in his class regardless if it had anything to do with the subject. Gives you a complete different look at life. Pretty cool how he has field trips also. TAKE HIS CLASS if you need environmental bio! the lab and assignments he gives are pretty easy if you are focused.
Knowledgeable teacher. Willing to help. Extremely tough grader. If you are taking a class to fulfill your requirements for transferring and the course is not required for your major. do not take his class. I would reccomend this class to anyone who puts their heart and soul into Bio.you may end up going on field trips to ultimately drop the class.
He is a nice teacher, but a very tough grader. He never curve the grade. I think he could make his classes much easier if he could curve the grade a little bit.
awesome and fair
Where to start with Watanabe.. first, he doesn't give study guides for his tests. He tells you to study the book for a test which is usually 5-6 whole chapters and his notes. I gave the same answer as another student on an exam and received 0 points while the other student received the full 4. Fair? No. On the plus side, he has a sense of humor.
Test questions are weird questions that are never in the lecture.
This is definitely THE best professor I have ever had. He is so engaged in his discussions and knowledgeable about all marine biology, and he makes every class interesting! Make sure you prepare well for tests though! But he is very professional and probably the best professor at Ohlone College;other professors, especially English ones really suck...
Great teacher! His class was hard but as long as you go to lectures and study it should be okay. His labs are really easy. You also need to make sure you do the flashcards online because that will help you and if you do not do them it goes against you. He makes biology really fun to learn. I highly recommend him.
Great professor, fun and clear also helpful. Labs are not complicated. Highly recommend him. Study his slides and do the exercises on line before class. Take enough time to read the on-line book, it is practically digested for you.
His class is really hard. I needed this class to transfer to UC Berkeley but at the end i had to drop this class and ended up going to UC Davis instead of Berkeley. Just because of this class i couldn't get into my dream school. I studies really hard, i read the book and still ended up getting a D in the first test.
Class is so hard! Doesn't give study guides & expects us to read like 30 pages of notes from 3-5 chapters or straight read it from the book. Lectures are super long,Labs are so worthless. He only cares for teacher pet type of students. Wish he would separate chapters & do little quizzestests instead of doing a huge exam of 3-5 chapters. Good luck!
He is a good teacher, he gives lots of good analogies for you to understand the lecture. All the stuff in the exams are going to be mentioned during the lecture so make sure you dont skip class. His Labs are pretty easy. This class is hard, but if you study its easy to get an A. I recommend him! You'll definetely know your stuff at the end of sem.
A great teacher! I would take this class again if I could! He is very passionate about biology and will make you realize how much you have to learn about biology, that you do not run out of things to learn about, which is interesting and got me interested in biology even though I would not have taken biology if I wer not required to. Study hard A!
This class was kind of hard. First midterm was easy while the second one, I bombed in. Professor is not that bad, but his class seems challenging. Labs were a bit challenging in this class, as well.
I'm an environmental biology major (so perhaps I'm biased) but I really enjoyed this class. We went on field trips and did research projects. His labs are unconventional and unstructured. You should attend lecture and take good notes, as the tests are based on lectures and are difficult . He's super willing to help you if you just ask for it.
Gave up to 24 exc points during Earth Week. Nice & approachable & engaging during lectures. 2 field trips, easy to get full credit on labs if you're thorough & use all lab time. 1 ppt presentation. Quizzes online are based out of the book. I didn't read much of the text & found the quizzes difficult, even open-book. Study only ppts for test!
In his online class he assigns a lot of work, not that hard, but takes forever to grade it. Includes a trip by yourself to farmers market in SF & interview 3 vendors (pics required). Weekly discussions & quizzes. 2 online articles on current environmental issues every week and write a short summary on each, due at end of semester. 2 tests & final.
Dr. Watanabe has got be one of my favorite professors! He's approachable, easy-going, and extremely passionate about biology. He keeps his students engaged during lectures with his abundant supply of information. Two exams and the final make up the bulk of your grade. Not an easy A, but study his lecture slides religiously and you will pass!! :)
I am not a Bio-anything major, but I found this class to be very interesting. I loved the field trips and the lectures. I wish labs were more structured, but if you put in effort you will get a good grade in lab. Ask questions! He is very nice & wants you to do well. There are 3 tests straight from lectures and a handful of quizzes from the book.
I am taking his online Introduction to Environment course and I do not recommend it, it is very confusing. He makes it seem like it is laid out simple, but it is not. It's very confusing, and it is not at all an easy course. He provides very little time to take the tests online, and there is a lot of reading required. This class is too much work.
I do not recommend this class or professor, he is very confusing, sends to many confusing emails, and the class consists of a TON of work. It is not easy work either, the tests are hard and you have quizzes every week. It's a lot of work for an online class, and it's also very confusing. The material is tough as well, lots of reading and writing.
I do not recommend taking his class at all, he is not a good online teacher. He is very confusing and he assigns a bunch of work, all in which is due in a short amount of time. It is not an easy class he grades really hard on discussions and the tests are hard as well. There is a ton of weekly required reading and I did not enjoy the course at all.
I would not recommend this class at all, it is online and he is a really harsh and tough grader. He assigns a bunch of work, and most of it is all due quickly. The exams are really hard and difficult, he doesn't provide enough time to take them. There is a ton of reading and he doesn't provide notes or a study guide either, really tough class.
I really do not recommend taking his online class, it is really difficult and not easy to pass. There is a ton of work and it is stressful, it makes the class hard. He piles a ton of work on you and on top of that his tests are extremely tough, considering there is no lectures provided.I would not recommend taking his class, really tough.
He's a pretty good professor, just a little bit disorganized. The way he explains things is funny and easy to understand, and I enjoyed the field trips. I'd definitely recommend this class, it was way more enjoyable and easier than any other biology course I've taken. He posts his lectures slides online but explains them in class; so go to class!
A LOT of reading. Quizzes are easy if you do the reading. The tests are probably the hardest. I swear those questions will make your blood boil. Imagine a multiple choice question where all the options are a little bit true and there is no obvious wrong answer.
The hardest class I have ever taken here at Ohlone, he is tough and does not provide any assistance when you need any. There is a ton of reading and he does not provide any resources but the textbook, which makes the class really hard. His tests are extremely hard and it is very difficult to get an A in the class, I BARELY passed the course.
This was an extremely tough course, even though it was online, it was still pretty darn tough. There is not help from the professor either. It's all on you to read the book and retain the information for the tests and written assignments. I honestly cannot recommend taking this course and I would steer clear of taking his online classes. No thanks.
Way to tough of a class for an online one. I do not recommend him as a professor either, there is no help what so ever from the professor, and the exams are extremely tough. There also is a lot of work, and the bulk of your grade is made up from the quizzes and exams. You have to read a lot as well, skip this class at all costs!!! Horrible!!!
ABSOLUTE WORST TEACHER EVER!!! EXAMS ARE TO HARD AND NOT ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETE THEM. TRYING TO FAIL THE STUDENTS, ABSOLUTLY NO HELP WHAT SO EVER SETS YOU UP FOR FAILURE. DOES NOT TELL YOU ABOUT THE PROJECTS THAT ARE DUE OR WHEN YOU CAN START THEM YOU HAVE FIND OUT YOURSELF. AVOID AT ALL COST WORST TEACHER EVER. STAY AWAY!!!!
If you read and study you will be fine, can't cheat your way through this course.
his class is so hard than others
I do not recommend taking this professor at all, avoid at all cost!!! He is unhelpful, makes his class super hard and the exams are super tough. STAY AWAY. Do not sign up for his class, he sets his students up for failure. I tried so hard, but his tests were so difficult and tricky, I ended up with a C in his class. The hardest class ever!!!!!
Absolutely one of the worst classes I have ever taken! He is a super hard grader, and he really does not care if you pass his course or not. The tests are super hard and you are limited to a very short amount of time to answer multiple choice questions as well as short answer questions combined, it's ridiculous! Stay away from his online course!!!!
This was honestly one of my hardest classes Ive taken at Ohlone. This class and professsor is not joke. For an online class, it is ridiculous. The amount of work required and the time limits on the tests make it very hard to do well. I highly recommend avoiding this class all together and if you need this class, take it on campus. Hardest class.
Hardest class at Ohlone bar none. This is a no joke class, if you are not on top of things, you are guaranteed to fail. He is one of the hardest Professors on campus. For a community college course, it is extremely tough class. Do not take this class or professor, he is extremely tough and it's really hard to get a good grade in the class.
One of my favorite biology class at Ohlone. Hes a great professor, explains things pretty well and very engaging. I really enjoyed the field trip at the tide pools. He post his slides online and explain them in class. Have your slide ready to take good notes, study them, and you should do fine.
He's a very enthusiastic teacher that loves his job and the subjects he teaches. His enthusiasm is very contagious, and he makes it clear that he wants his students to actually learn the material which is why his tests are more detailed. However, he provides study guides and plenty of resources to help you succeed, all you have to do is put time in
I passed this class, but barely. The worst part about passing is I literally feel like I didn't learn anything because the class work was so cramped. Professor not willing to help with questions or concerns which is really heartbreaking when you expect your professor to want to see you succeed.
Amazing professor! He is patient, kind& gives awesome lectures. His passion for the environment& science is contagious. It is easy to stay focused& interested during his class. exams are difficult, but he provides clear study guides & goals. I received Ds on my 1st 2 tests, still managed a high B grade. His class is worth the effort! STUDY! :)
His class is so hard!!!!! The exams are hard. We had quiz and discussions every week, and also some extra work outside of the campus. You need to go SF or other places to do interview with someone you don't know. HARDDDDDD!!
Extremely hard class, one I do not recommend taking at all. He is such a tough grader, I wouldn't recommend signing up unless you really need this class. There are no lectures at all, it is just reading the complicated textbook, and then taking his really hard multiple choice tests along with complicated essay questions that are graded harshly.
Started the semester with 30 students, ended it with 9.
Hardest class I've taken at Ohlone bar none. He provides no help throughout the course at all, everything is online and he does nothing in his power to help students succeed. He could care less, no help at all. His tests are extremely and he does not give sufficient amount of time to take the exams. His class is really hard and you are on your own.
This class required a field trip, even for an online class. The grade weighs HEAVILY on the midterm and exam, if you don't perform well on those it will be hard to maintain a good grade. Discussions and weekly quizzes aren't worth much. Easy A if you do the reading.
This was pretty bad. If you really want to pass with a high grade, just read everything and study all of it like your life depended on it. Weekly discussions & chapter quizzes that are OK. Do well on all the major tests or you won't be having good time. You have a very short amount of time to finish tests so make sure you really know EVERYTHING.
He is a great instructor. If you want to actually learn something, this class is the class you should take. Final was hard but he did cover everything in the lecture. He was really nice and knowledgeable and definitely passionate about bio. If you wanna transfer to a UC/CSU, this is a great class to take!!
I'm currently enrolled in 3 in-class classes and 2 online classes. My other online class is a breeze while this class was a full on tsunami. For the exam, he only gave the students 70 minutes to answer 59 questions and not all of the were multiple choice questions. If you don't read the textbook thoroughly, you're definitely not going to pass.
I am also currently taking his ENVS 108 online class. I just finished the Exam I, it is extremely hard, the hardest exam I've taken. He only gives 70 min for 59 multiple choices (which are hard) and 5 short questions. This is not enough time to do it as other student said. He also doesn't give any help and study guides for the student. The worse!
one of the hardest courses I have ever taken at ohlone. The proffesor is a friendly person, however that is were any positives about this "class" end. Its Pure lecture with no handouts to suppliment a learning process. 3 major exames that contain over 8 chapters of informaition to learn each, with no sutdy guide. He gives no real direction/help.
I would not recommend taking this professor at all, he has no care in the world for his students at all. He could care less if you understand the material or even pass his class. He grades hella tough and is not caring at all nor is he helpful if you visit him during his office hours in person. Do NOT take his class at all, you'll end up hating it.
This was one of the hardest classes I've taken, there is really no assistance from the professor. The course material is hard, his tests are extremely hard and he doesn't care at all, he for student failure. Would not recommend this professor at all, he doesn't care and it's a really hard class to pass, despite even being an online course.
This professor does not offer enough support throughout the course to ensure a student's academic success. This is a general requirement, and while by no means does that insinuate a class should be easy, the professor should work with the class and provide more resources. There is no study guide, no outline, and no real assistance. Very difficult.
Do not be discouraged by other comments on here; this class is difficult but very doable if you put in the work! There are only a couple midterms and the final exam which make up most of your grade. There is no homework but you should replace that time with studying for his class.
Do not take the online class! He won't teach anything! Only TED and Textbook. 70 min with 60 questions, and include 5 typing questions. Leave...
I took his online class and honestly, it wasn't that bad. I expected it to be much worse but he's really flexible if you email him about stuff. There are quizzes & discussions every week, two midterms and one final and two field trips (One actually being just the Ohlone Newark campus). I think if you're going to take him, it needs to be online.
The worst online class that I have taken at Ohlone. Tests are ridiculous as there is only 70 min for 60 hard questions with 5 short answer and discussions are just mindless repetitions of what happened in a TED talk. Teacher couldn't care less. Online class requires a pointless field trip to SF farmer's market to talk to shop owners. Ridiculous.
Dr. W mostly worries about giving students a lot of work and exams, and he mostly catches students from cheating. His online class sounds much more awkward than it was many years ago. So, TAKE ENVIRONMENT CLASSES ELSEWHERE!!!
This professor is absolutely paranoid about cheating. He will go to any lengths to claim that youre cheating, and threaten and evade your rights. Not a good professor. Really vile towards his students. I dont know how hes still allowed to teach.
Watanabe is the worst teacher to ever take. Do NOT take this professor unless you want a hard teacher.
he is the worst teacher I've ever seen! do not take his class, take somewhere else! definitely not gonna take his class anymore. he is so tricky and insidious.
if he caught you cheat, he will find any reason to claim you cheated. he will catch a few students on every exam. a friend of mine got caught, his reason is he didn't teach us that, how do we know the answer? if you didn't teach us, y u give us this question and make our grade bad? i'm ready talk to principle and drag him down.
He is the worst teacher Ive ever seenPlease do not take hishishis classHow did he become a teacherA ridiculous person. He will deliberately ask you what he hasn't taught in the examand then if you answer correctly, he will find any any any reasons to say you cheatedHe did a good job helping you fail
80mins 70questions 5 questions need to type 2-3 sentencesThis teacher just wants you to fail exam to show his intelligence. A ridiculous teacher
This person was so mean. He wont let you pass this class . Dont join in this class ! !!
It was the worst teacher I've ever met since enrolling at ohlone. Dont even think about getting A in his class. Getting C means you are doing well.
I can't understand, the lectures are not clear, the assignments are not clear. It is difficult to understand the content. If someone wants to choose this teacher, please consider it clearly.
Pretty bad.
The teacher deliberately ask some questions that we did not learn in exam, so that the I always doubted myself. I had a hard time in this class
This was the toughest online course I ever took in my life, the first exam I couldnt even finish it and got a C, the exam was setup so you dont have time to cheat, either you know it or you dont. Communication is the key to success in college, I emailed him for in-person meeting and request to take all future exams on site, got a B+ @ the end
I drop his online class as soon as possible. Bad teacher.
I've taken two of Watanabe's classes and I really like him as a person. He clearly cares about the subjects he teaches, but teaching was never his desired career choice (he admitted this). You're going to have to work pretty hard in his classes. Keep an eye on out for due dates and assignment information because his syllabus is never updated.
Taking the class online and professor uses proctorio for exams. If you dont know what that is, its basically spyware that watches everything you do while taking the test. You have to show valid ID and you have to show your room and it monitors any movement you make. Although I get it, it made me uncomfortable and felt a little Orwellian.
Deliberately puts questions on the test that we never covered in class. BEWARE! If you get these right, he will accuse you of academic dishonesty.
He is one of the toughest professors i've ever signed up for. The exams are very difficult to pass even if you study a lot. You don't get much time either. He will find any reason to accuse you of cheating too. I don't recommend taking this professor at all. You will end up dropping after the first week.
This professor is one of the worst i've ever had. The class is mainly graded by the exams that are proctored with sensitive SPYWARE that tracks EVERYTHING you do. He gives questions on the exam that wasn't even covered in the lectures, and he will say that you cheated on the test if you got those questions correct. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS
Dr. Watababe's class is mostly graded on the tests, which by the way are very difficult to pass and you don't have much time to complete them. More than half of the class dropped before the last day to drop the class WITHOUT a "W" Grade. If you fail a test, you might as well drop as you won't have any chance at passing the class. He is the worst.
BIG mistake signing up for this professor. He offers no support for students and bases grades mainly on the tests. The tests are SO hard and sometimes includes questions that weren't even covered in the lectures.
Everyone who says this class isnt that bad is biased. This professor doesnt know how to teach. Ive since transferred to UC Berkeley and this professor is worse than any Ive had combined and thats saying a lot. Terrible human being who emotionally and mentally abuses students with entrapment.
IMO he relies too much on the book to teach and the quizzes were not what he said would be on them (like having to memorize the discussion prompts). U read 1 or 2 chapters a wk, I get that EnvSci is a broad subject but I feel that he should try to teach the main concepts in his own way and not have the class be all memorizing the book. Stressful.
Although he knows his stuff, I didn't much care for Professor Watanabe's teaching style. I found his lectures dense and boring at times, and couldn't grasp the material all that well. I did quite badly in the first few tests, but made up at the end primarily through reading a lot from the book. Self study will help you, but lectures can get heavy.
His style of teaching is mediocre. Personally, I noticed hes a very bias person outside of the academic area. The grade is mostly based on three exams. His lectures are long and disorganized. The most unprofessional thing he does is keep your overall grade locked, even after the semester has ended. Not a great Bio professor.
He is not a good professor at all! I hope he sees these reviews that students give on him. His style of teaching is horrible. It's not worth taking his class.
I'm not gonna lie, his lectures are really long, but they do get interesting at times. You need to put in EFFORT to pass this class. Labs are fun, and final exams are based solely off the powerpoints. Do not take this class if you expect to study a few days before tests and pass. Nice guy overall, and very passionate about science.
Very helpful, caring professor and willing to give feedback when necessary. Tests are difficult and based on lectures, but overall based on understanding of concepts rather than just memorizing facts. If you have a firm grasp on your own study habits, you will be able to succeed in his classes.
There are only 11 students in my class and that speaks a lot. Anyone that says this professor is easy is just a bot. The professor was extremely hard and the PowerPoints were really long. Majority of the grades are from the three tests. Some of those questions weren't even covered on the PowerPoint. Highly don't recommend this professor.
He expects you to learn and apply biology in your everyday living even though you're just there to take it for your GE. Majority of the class on PowerPoint. Which is extremely long (2.5-3hours) You have to take in so much information. There are no study guides...
Out of all my classes this is the hardest professor I've taken. Save yourself the time and energy
The Mission San Jose high school student that took the class and studied really hard for the midterm got the best grade in the class. Yeah that kind of student. Well she was told the test was too easy by the professor.
His lectures are really long and he doesnt make an effort to engage his students, when told he was including to many chapters in his tests by multiple students he said "oh well no one else has had a problem before." He does respect peoples learning techniques. You can also get a good grade and still fail (i got a 78%)
My apologies i made a typo on my review, he doesn't respect peoples learning styles. He has embarrassed students in front of the class and stood by and watched as another student became hostile towards me. Didn't ask him to leave or anything. If you do have to take his class, show up, he will fail you. And you wont get more than a 75 on his tests.
Caring professor, willing to meet after class time. His lectures are long, all powerpoint, note taking can be useful to stay alert. No study guides, which could be helpful for the exam as it based on knowledge and understanding rather than just memorizing. Cares about his students and is actually nice and understanding, just be honest with him.
Professor Watanabe is a pretty nice guy if you give him a chance. He's very clearly passionate about his work, which makes learning easier. The biggest downsides are his long lectures and his grade heavy tests. The tests require a lot of time and effort, and are made harder with no study guides. My best advice is to make lots of flashcards.
His lectures are super boring especially when you have him in 7:30 in the morning and it's horrible. The only things that will be counted on you're grades are the labs and test which there are 3 total and if you fail 2, just drop the class. Lectures slides average are about 60+ slides per day, you'd be surprised to see 40 slides. Overall horrible.
Lectures were boring, would rethink life decisions every time I enter at 7:20. There's no break or whatsoever between units, would go over 2-3 units a day. His labs on the other hand are quite interesting and fun to do. He's very passionate about biology. Registering for this class to dip and study alone won't get you far really.
Very passionate about biology, so class is engaging. Encourages questions & really wants you to understand the material. Gives fun uncle vibes but also well-accomplished marine biologist vibes. No complaints.
Has a lot of energy and uses anecdotes during the lecture to make it more engaging. I guess the best way to put it is that he is the "cool uncle". Very fortunate that he is also passionate in what he does which; the more effort a professor would want to put in their class, the better results it would have on the students.
A fun teacher and passionate about his work. He lives and loves science. Gives off the cool uncle vibe that others mentioned. Has some extra credit opportunities that will help your grade. If you do all the labs and study effectively you will be fine. Best way to learn/study is making resources in flashcards, slideshows, and asking him questions.
An understanding and fun professor to have. All test content comes from lectures and he gives two extra credit opportunities!
You can tell he is passionate about biology. Gives many fun facts in his lectures and personally I find them very interesting. Almost all test content comes from his lecture slides so make sure to go over those and review before exams. Also has extra credit opportunities. Chill guy 👍🏽.
GUYS, please, please, if you guys care about your future and you don't want to have a hard time and want to actually learn, JUST DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. Too many lectures and VERY VERY hard exams; all in class feel he wants us to fail. He's not a good teacher; please don't take it, and he should be fired because he makes the college name bad.
All of the things in his exams are stated CLEAR in the slides and he puts in extra effort to make the class engaging and memorable. He warns people about when they should start studying before the exams (~2 weeks) and is always willing to answer questions and clarify. He frequently helps out in lab and gives straightforward instructions.
Teaches concepts really good. learned alot from his class. based on 3 exams. lectures are long but very interesting and informative. explains in such a way thats not confusing & answers questions. Have to study for the class and put effort in and you will do good. Do not take if you dont want to study or put effort in the class. overall very good
After reading the reviews before the semester, I was skeptical. But I ended up with an A+. This class is 10000% manageable if you are strong in your study habits. EVERYTHING is from the lectures. If you "performatively study", you will NOT get by. More than half the class dropped. He also answers questions and his lectures are interesting at times.
