Tough but fair, a definite hottie!
My favorite teacher at CMU. Young, smart, enthusiastic.
Great class, very nice, understanding and willing to work w/ students.
boring , high expectation
Grades hard but fair
Boring and grades hard (especially if you don't agree with him)
tests graded on his opinions and interpretations...watch out!
Jeff is very good and fair with all students. Grading is very good.
He seems to be a very happy person unless it becomes apparent to him that he is the only one in the room contributing to a conversation. Tests are hard, reading primarily very boring.
My favorite course at CMU and my favorite prof. Not easy though.
Very hard professor. Lectures are okay, however readings are boring and tests are hard. Not an easy class!!
If you're not prepared to work... don't take his classes! Easy guy to get along with if you do the work!
Not an easy class, but very enjoyable. Only SOME of the readings are dry- most are wonderful. Jeffrey really knows his stuff and the class discussions were enlightening. Read the texts (an amazing concept, I know) and you'll be fine. great class!
Jeffrey was an okay professor not anything great
He was a very difficult professor. You will write a lot of papers and he is not an easy grader. Hes a nice enough person, but I would not recommend him if you are not an expert in English.
He is a great teacher who really knows his stuff. But his a really hard grader. And you have to read the material or else you will be lost. But he is a great teacher overall.
Sorry If you're taking from him at this point! The keywords to describe him: pompous, haughty, staunchy, cold, uncaring. Think of an iceburg from New England oddly placed in this, our mountain town, and it will be a good metaphor for Jeffrey's abilities.
It's hard to please this professor and be aware that he does play favorites. He assigns a great deal of homework and is a tough grader so be careful.
Excellent prof--one of CMUs best. Very clear, very smart, but demanding. Make sure to attend class.
The comments here are dead on. Jeffrey is a great guy, is fair, and really seems to have passion for what he does. He is however demanding and assigns a great deal of reading and work. YOu'll get a lot out of his class if you put in the effort.
Don't take him!!! This class is awful!

I can see why some don't like him. He has high expectations and expects good writing. If you are at CMU to learn and work hard, take him. Otherwise, stay away.
I have never had an English teacher who was such a hard grader. Also, part of the grade is participating in class, but if you don't share the same opinion as him, he makes you look stupid. I don't recommend taking this class unless you are an English majo
He expects a lot out of the student. TON of reading for each class plus extra homework. Class is mostly discussion style - but it is a rigid discussion. When he does lecture I find it hard to stay focused after 45 minutes. DO NOT take unless ENG major.
As a grad student, I can say that Weinstock is dynamite--one of the best professors I've ever had. It's scary how much he knows and he pays such close attention to student work and is so passionate about what he does that it can be intimidating.
this pirate spoke so softly i couldn't understand him. plus, black jeans tucked into your boots Weinstock, not cool. also the class reading was boring (even for an english major).
Dont' take him unless you are interesting in working hard and learning.
Those who complain are the ones who don't do the reading, don't come to class, and don't ask for help--and then wonder why then didn't do well. HE'S AWESOME!
To those other students who complain about the reading: it's a lit class, duh! Obviously, you're not going to learn if you don't try. I'm so sick of hearing how other students think classes are too hard. Grow up or get out of college!
Do not take this class unless it is required. VERY hard grader and the reading is overwhelming.I was angry and frustrated w/ all the reading assigned, but in the end I actually learned TONS about literature and historical figures. Participate-he'll luv u.
Reading and professor very reasonable. Good course.
He is demanding but an excellent teacher. I learned so much in this course. Rading load was huge though.
a very religiously themed class and teacher. Lays the class out in a history time line. Cut the reading down. Grades on his beliefs not your quality
Extremely hard grader, He makes it impossible to get an A. and definitly favors students. If you get a C on one test or paper he tells you to drop because you're obviously not a serious student. stuff happens, and the world doesn't revolve around him.
Excellent prof! One of the best at CMU.
Awesome guy and Proff, class can be boring at times, but he really knows his stuff, hes makes the class interesting.
I came to class everyday, did the readings, did the essays, did the responses to the readings, and pulled of a C. Don't let him urge you to drop the class if you get a C on a test, you'll be fine!
He can be very negative. He will urge you to drop the class if you don't get at least a C on a test. Class is very boring. You have to do silly group projects.
This class is awsome! He's willing to help students whether it's in or out of class. You can tell that he cares about his work and he takes the time to make sure everything is clear. If you want to learn and be challenged then this is the class to take.
He bombards you with handouts explaining every detail that he wants and will even make you do grammer worksheets in a lit class! He's very clear but the volume of instruction he gives can be overwhelming. Memorize his stupid survival guide and you'll be fine.
He does give a lot of work, but he is really helpful and offers extra credit. He really seems like he wants his students to do well in his class.
I was at Central a while back, and he was certainly one of the best teachers I've ever had. Extremely helpful and super nice. He really cares about his students, and he's good at encouraging students to participate. I would definitely recommend him to any serious student.
This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. I struggled through his complex material and his grading is extremeley diificult. If you like reading ten boring novels and answering diffcult and detailed essay exams than this is the class for you
If you don't want to read or write papers, don't take an English class! 251 is basic--2 short papers and generally short readings. Weinstock isn't the moron here--he comes in smiling and doesn't knock people down.
Not an easy class, but definitley not impossible. As long as the work is done and the reading, an A is attainable, I got one. Hard grader, but in the long run it's better. He comes into class with a good attitude and is always willin to help outside of class. Overall, excellent class and professor.
Having taken several classes with him, I can say this: take an upper level class with him. He is wonderful with smaller groups: relaxed, enthusiastic, helpful. He clearly loves the literature and it really comes through. 251 is just less fun I think because its so big and many students don't care
He is the clearest, most organized professor I have ever had. I wish more professors were so clear!
I think he does a great job of teaching. I came into the class prepared to hate him based on the negative comments but its not that way at all. Sure there is a lot of reading and writing but he warns you before the semester starts so you can decide to drop it if you want.
Great professor. Really works with his students and is understanding and interested in what students have to say. Gives great feedback on papers and makes writing papers easy because you do it in sections, turn the section in correct and hand in a perfect paper in the end for an A. Take Him!
If you enjoy writing papers and reading TONS of short but really not that short stories then this is the class for you. He is a really hard grader so go in expecting to work over time on your papers.

I was in a bad class. Students often didn't come and even boasted about not doing the reading but then were angry when they didn't do well. I'm sure their the ones who rate Weinstock poorly below. I found him very helpful and although the reading is sometimes dry, if you do it and attend you will do well.
I really was considering a major in English but this class made me change my mind. I always get A's and I ended up with a C+ in his class. He was an impossible grader.

Prefessor Weinstock is very upfront about the requirements for his classes. There is no mistaking what he expects from his students. He is willing to help with anything we need, and does a good job informing his students of course material. I think he is an excellent teacher.
I really enjoy this class...it's not easy, it's about an average of 70+ pages of reading for each class. But discussions are good & he knows what he's talking about. Don't miss class, it's not worth the missed assignments or discussions. He's really understanding though, so don't take him for granted. Take this class if you really like Literature.

Jeff is a really good teacher who's full of enthusiasm. He knows his**** and invites good discussion. Anyone complaining about the work load should go home. This is college, you nitwits. Of course there will be work, but if you show a little effort, you will do excellent.
What impressed me most about Dr. Wenstock is that from time to time he would actually admit not knowing something, which seems very rare among professors. But then he would always research the question and report back to the class the next day. For some reason that sticks with me as impressive. He gives lots of work and lots of feedback
Long live Whitman! Long live Weinstock! Long live Weinstock who made me love Whitman!
some reading, some writing, but what else is an english class?? I think anyone will love this class, because it helps you appreciate literature..I will remember the things I have read, especially Poe.
This is a good class to take if you are an English Major/Minor. Yo analyze poetry and literature just like the course name says. Weinstock is a good guy, who can come across the wrong way however. When it comes to grading papers he acts like his way is the be all end all of the world--it's kind of ridiculous. Overall good guy, quite cocky.
Having done teaching myself, I always find it funny when students presume to know more than the professor. Weinsock is incredibly specific about what he wants and he grades based on that. If you follow his directions, you'll do fine. He is not cocky, he just knows what he is talking about!
the guy is just a grade "A" JERK. That's all I really have to say; take someone in the journalism department who cares and isn't so far up his own *** he can actually teach you.
Dear Lord! Get ready for some straight drama about plagarising...YOU BETTER SHOW YOUR SOURCES. He goes off if he even thinks you took someone else's work. Just pick another professor and save yourself the headache.
I agree that if you plan to plagiarize you should take another prof. However, Weinstock is far from unique among english profs in being concerned about plagiarism and I don't think that its really a strike against him. He really cares about what he does and wants his students to do well. I think that's more important than his (cute) pony tail.
This class was great. It's not an easy class, but if you put in effort it is possible to achieve an "A", I did. He's always willing to help students, and gives useful feedback on papers. He tries to incorporate everyone's ideas into lecture. There's a lot of reading, and a few papers. Overall, an excellent class and teacher.
he is condisending, arrogant, presumptuous, pompous, audacious, pretentious. he makes clear what he wants but grades in a different manner. he treats students like theyre working towards their doctorates and expects them to have preconceived notions of the subject being introduced. i hate him.
oh my, yes audacious indeed! audacious enough to expect students to know what "audacious" means and to write using sentences! audacious enough to expect that they have (gasp!) IDEAS and can (gasp!) defend them! crazy for cmu, huh? is he easy? no. but guess what: THIS IS COLLEGE!!! if you don't want to think go back to elementary school
FOR ENGLISH MAJORS ONLY! In the past, having taken several classes with him, I would've recommended Weinstock to anyone. Lately, I've seen a whole lot of non-majors whine about reading, citations and too much work. You know what? Suck it up and get some standards, you sorry brats. Great prof, nice person, completely underrated.
I'll agree with the others on here, this isn't for non-majors. In fact, non-majors should steer clear of Weinstock and any ENG class above 201 anyway. Weinstock's a nice guy, he listens to everyone's opinions, but he doesn't teach an easy class. Expect to do outside studying, a lot of outside studying.
Professor Weinstock does not take into account that students have many classes..not just his. He is ridiculous and I really disliked his class. He defiantly knows the material he is teaching, however this does not make up for the amount of work he assigns and how hard he grades. He assigns ALOT of work and grades VERY HARD. One word: overboard
It's true Weinstock gives a lot of work, but he's very much on par with other English profs--reading and writing come with the territory! He is demanding but you'll learn a lot more from him than from someone who isn't so demanding. Take him if you are interested in working hard and learning. If you want an "easy A" go elsewhere.
Being smarter than many english majors, I felt this would be a fun class, a way to round off my schedule. Instead, Dr. Weisntock made the class nearly unbearable. However, if you are a pretentious, trench coat wearing, english major, by all means, sign yourself up for the pain. if you're smarter than him, or a better writer, be ready for the pai
Weinstock is a bit hard to get a read on. He is very relaxed about some things like extensions and is funny but very anal about other things like punctuation and sources, although I guess there is something to be said for his if you are going to do it, do it right attitude. I liked him. He gives alot of work though amd will make you do worksheet
EWWWW!!! Terrible is the best word to describe him. He is a teacher who really takes his job seriously i will give him that, however he is also a know-it-all snob. He does not take into account that your life doesnt revolve around his class. His class is all discussions and then he grades his papers extremely harsh. I really disliked himand theclas
He was a great help in understanding anything we read. There was a lot of reading, but it was interesting. He keeps you interested in what he's teaching and he's fun on top of that. He's not boring and can kid around with you, but is serious enough to teach you what you need to know.
Weinstock isn't for the timid because he expects the reading to be done and competent writing. He's also very clear and helpful if you ask and finds something interesting in every comment that is volunteered. I enjoyed his class, but I like to be challenged.
Hes terible. He tells you things liek drop his class and grades like its a comp class even though its a litrature class, dont take him if you can't avoid him because hes impossable.
He goes above and beyond. All papers and essay come back with extensive typed comments, when there's group work, he photocopies group notes so everyone has a copy, he even changes the course based on student feedback. he has high expectations but holds himself to them too. This is an awesome course for majors.
He teaches a fun class. It's not easy but if you listen to what he wants you should be fine.
I'm an English major so I've taken a LOT of English classes over the past few years and Weinstock is by FAR the best professor I have ever had. His class is hard, but if it's your major it's completley worth it. He makes everything you read interesting. Just realize that his critisism is constructive-- he's only trying to make you a better writer.
Good professor. You will really learn a lot in his class. If you follow all of his instructions you shouldn't have any problems. He makes it very clear what his expectations are.
I have read plenty of comments...they're all very true. THose that are negative had much of the same expierences as I. Yes he's clear, yes he expects a lot, but he also grades very unfairly. He grades based on his beliefs and leaves no room for other possibilities. His comments are negative and he doesn't seem to notice how insulting he can be.
Did it ever occur to you that if you get negative comments you deserve them? The students who whine about Jeffrey shouldn't be in his class and shouldn't be at CMU. He takes your work more seriously than you do and provides more feedback than any other prof. It's not all flowers and kittens but that's how you learn. He's one of CMU's best.
His class was really great. He makes things interesting while making you think critically about the material, and he's a lot of fun to have as a prof. Made sure you had to read the material, valued opinions, not easy but all criticism was constructive. Dressed like a pirate on Halloween. Awesomeness ^_^
In a word: Awesome! Vampires and lit was the best course I have taken at CMU bar none! The reading rocks and Weinstock rules!!
Jeffrey Weinstock is the best professor I have had at CMU. He doesn't grade unfairly. He just expects you to have a clear opinion and be able support it. He is also strict about the proper use of the english language. He makes class fun and encourages participation. Be prepared for papers but also be prepared to have fun.
Here's when I became a Weinstock convert. I wrote a paper for 251 and he wrote that he didn't agree with my opinion but that it was well-argued and I got an A! He does an excellent job being open-minded to other perspectives and I've taken two other classes with him.
What I've discovered after several classes with Jeffrey is that if you do the reading and SHOW HIM YOU'VE DONE IT, you will do well. He gives a million handouts, but be sure to read them and follow his directions because he's very specific about what he asks for.
Really nice guy, class content was fairly boring and the daily quizzes are a bit tricky, but overall an alright class. Just makes sure you do the millions of readings and go to class (most of the time)
I didn't like DR. Weinstock at first. At least out of class. In the emails he sends to everyone, he is rude in a nice way. In class he was very enjoyable, but in his emails and responses, I felt I was just a lowly freshman, getting on his nerves. Perhaps I was, and he would be more fun in a higher level class. Either way, he is still a good teacher
Weinstock rocks. At times there's a lot of reading that need to get done, but really if you do the reading you're good to go. There's only 2 papers, exams are pretty easy if you've done what you were supposed to do. He grades fairly. He's really funny and relatable. And with the hair, he looks like he should be on the cover of a romance novel.
I took Vampires in Lit. and Film just for fun, and Dr. Weinstock was a fantastic professor. He really enjoyed what he was teaching, and he really tried to connect with everybody in the class. He graded somewhat tough on some of the papers, but he works with you to help you improve. I ended up getting an A in the class. Fantastic professor.
Dr. Weinstock acted above me, and didn't treat me well enough to want to attend his class. Quizzes were easy if you did your part. You have to really hit a home run with his papers, they make up most of your grade. 2 exams, but he gives study guides. He just needs to work on communication skills and treating students well.
I can say without hesitation that Jeffrey is very deserving of the Honors Professor of the Year award he won this year. He is passionate about his subject, extremely smart, and takes a real interest in his students. He is demanding, but offers lots of support and feedback ... and pizza!
really enthusiastic about his subject, very good lecturer. If your papers aren't up to his standards, he WILL tear into you.
The preceding comment is right, except omits that Weinstock allows you to revise and resubmit. So while he is demanding, you end up a better writer. His real talent though is finding something positive in all studnent comments and presentations. I learned a lot from him about how to do this. And he definitely knows his Poe!
He is a demanding professor who holds you to very high standards. He knows his stuff though.. I learned so much in this class and really improved my writing. Only take him if you are serious about English and can handle a difficult class. I worked VERY hard for my A... if you don't work hard, expect to nearly fail.
Dr. Weinstock has high standards, but I feel that I have improved as a collegiate writer after taking his class. The workload was high, and Weinstock was by no means an easy grader, but his class was never dull. I'd recommend Weinstock to any English major who is willing to accept constructive criticism and put forth a significant effort.
Professor Weinstock is incredibly passionate about English. He's an awesome lecturer -- I'm alert in his class even first thing in the morning. He values participation and hard work. He almost always will allow students to revise and resubmit, giving tons of opportunities to improve your grade. I highly recommend him.
Don't take the class thinking it'll be a cakewalk - half the class dropped. Expect to become a much better writer through Weinstock's intense criticism and high standards. He's an uber-intelligent guy, and can be intimidating at times, but shrug it off, work hard, and it can be an enjoyable experience. Also, rad hair and unmentioned DJ career.
He is demanding but also quite helpful. He is funny and very passionate about his subject. But don't expect the class to be easy, you will have to do a lot of work and a lot of reading.
Professor Weinstock's class is very interesting and his lectures capture your attention. However, he is a strict grader. It was difficult to meet his standards for the two papers necessary to pass the class. He is very vague in answering questions you ask concerning the assignments he gives.
I've only had one class with him near the end of my career and I'm sad to say I couldn't have had him for all of my classes. He is very explicit and clear in all assignments and is a tough grader, but he actually rewards hard work. BS wont work with him.
This class really requires you to attend lecture to stick with whats going on. He uses power points but then just talks through them so its harder to take notes. I found it nearly impossible to meet his standards for the 2 papers or the tests. If you are not serious about english don't take him!
Very helpful, incredibly intelligent. He grades hard, but he makes up for it with giving you the opportunity to submit drafts and rewrites. It's an English class; not all the reading is fun or short. Not rude at all! He loves when you disagree with him - so long as you can back it up. Work hard, communicate with him, and participate. Not too hard.
The best English professor I've had at CMU. He is very clear about what you wants and really wants to help you succeed. You really do have to do the readings and be prepared. I'd also recommend going to class because all the test questions come from discussion. He's so understanding and really makes you think about things. I learned a ton.
While there is a lot of reading for the class, the discussion is mostly student-led instead of strictly lecture. There is always opportunity to revise papers as well. :)
Only take Weinstock if you are prepared to have your writing ripped apart. He will let you revise, he gives very clear feedback, he'll even say nice things, but he'll then dissect your writing line by line. If you can deal with this, then he is fantastic--very clear and funny. But you will need to attend and do the reading. BS doesn't fly.
I believe he is a good professor in terms of his lectures and content but I had a hard time figuring out exactly what he wanted from his homework assignments. I did use the survival guide but it just seemed that every aspect of my homework was always ripped apart. Outside of that though he was pretty good and gives great feedback.
He has very high expectations. I think we would get along a lot better if he wasn't my teacher. I like him as a person in general, but not a teacher. If you fail the first exam, he'll recommend you drop from the class.
Dr. Weinstock is the nicest professor I've had at CMU, but that doesn't mean he's not a tough grader. Very kind and respectful toward students. Expects you to follow guidelines and know the material well. I actually learned a lot in this class; I'd recommend it, and I'd definiteyl recommend Weinstock.
Dr. Weinstock as a person is a great guy, but as a teacher, he knows what he is doing, and he is VERY intelligent. He will rip your paper appart word for word,so dont take it personal, and be prepared. I learned alot from him when it comes to essay writing and how to write a formal paper. I only recommend him if you are a strong writer.
I would not recommend him for any level. He Does not conduct good class discussion. He did not seem prepared for this course.
To be fair, I would have hated this class with anyone. I had no interest in 201 and considered myself a good writer. Weinstock though really made me work and is a tough grader and I resented it. What I've since learned though is everything he was teaching was important to so many other classes later. I'm glad he pushed me.
Dr. Weinstock is inspirational as a professor. He is smart and demanding, but understanding, helpful, and flexible. This course was the highlight of my graduate experience.
Too much reading
Dr. Weinstock gives great feedback on every assignment handed in for the course. The comments can be harsh however, if you use the feedback you will do well. The greatest part about Dr. Weinstock is he cares so much about his students! If you make the effort to speak with him outside of class he is helpful and very accommodating.
My favorite professor from fall semester. Makes himself very available to students. You have two big papers (and not really big...3-4 pages) and he gives great feedback on them. He explains every reading assignment thoroughly so as long as you attend class and read you should do well.
Overall, the class in itself is hard so to be fair, I would've hated it with anyone who taught it. The class is supposed to be Writing Intensive, but you'll only write two major papers and a few small assignments. Reading is most of the curriculum, so get ready for it. And, he's a really tough grader. Good luck to anyone who takes this course.
Lots of group projects, reading, and writing. Gave good feedback and chances to revise essays, but often his instructions were unclear, leading to lower grades because it was not what he wanted.
Great man, great mind.
Very passionate about his work. If you dont have an interest the material studied, he wont have an interest in you. Not very clear on his assignments and does not help much either.
Awesome reading for this class! It can be difficult to know exactly what he wants because he doesn't tell you what to write. You have to come up with your own ideas. If you email or go to office hours he will give lots of feedback. Kind of intimidating because he is so smart but very enthusiastic. Don't play with your phone or he'll fail you.
Dr. Weinstock is EXTREMELY knowledgeable in his field! I loved the way he taught the class and there were few assignments. He lets you revise every assignment which was VERY beneficial! He is a very tough grader though and always seems to want something specific but gives vague directions. His class is hard but it made me a better writer by far!
Every class basically involves an in-class writing, which wouldn't be so bad if he was just checking to make sure you did the reading, but he does not grade lightly on these. Even worse are the actual papers- he tears your papers apart, but does give you opportunities to revise them. For mid-term and final he assigned yet again more papers.
anyone who says he is unclear hasn't bothered to ask for clarification. he invites you to run ideas by him and gives really helpful feedback if you do. yes, he is a tough grader but lets you revise everything. I've never had a prof who put so much effort into trying to make me learn something!
The most memorable comment I've received in college so far is from Weinstock and it works out to "I disagree with your position but my agreeing with you isn't required" and I got an A on the paper. That's why he's my favorite professor--he doesn't tell you what to think but makes you defend your thinking, he doesn't play favorites, and BS won't fly
As an undergrad, I found him encouraging, but exacting and a bit intimidating. As a grad student, I've learned that he is among the most published authors in CMU history and has multiple awards for teaching and research. Most importantly, what he asked of me as an undergrad prepped me for grad school. I wish more CMU faculty were as committed.
Solid class, solid guy. Not so hard if you do the things you pay to do--go to class, do the reading.
There was a significant attrition rate in this class once it became clear there was more to it than simply sitting around discussing movies. Secondary readings were dense and Weinstock grades with a close eye (although he lets you revise). He's quite brilliant and funny and really knows his stuff but expects a lot.
He was very passionate about what he was teaching, however, he did little actual teaching. He led the first couple weeks of class and the rest was led by different student groups. The discussions were great and relevant to current issues. His grading was tough, but he provided good feedback and made revisions possible. Criteria was always unclear.
I'm surprised to realize how much I enjoyed this course--and much of it is due to Dr. Weinstock. He is funny, provides excellent feedback, and really respects student input. Even his exam questions made me chuckle! I'm very glad I took this course with him and recommend it to anyone who needs a UP.
Hands down my favorite class at CMU--the reading was amazing! The class was laid back, Professor Weinstock is super smart and funny, you can revise everything, no in-class exams, mostly discussion. I wish more classes were like this--I would take it again if I could! There is a lot of reading though.
I don't recommend taking this course over the summer. Not only does it involve four major papers in multiple drafts in six weeks but others in class will be non-English speakers and those who have flunked before. Weinstock did his best and was always upbeat and helpful but a lot of it was basic stuff like sentences and punctuation.
My favorite prof at CMU but here's the thing: he cares about your writing more than you do. To you, it's a paper you have to submit; to him, it's about learning to write and think clearly. So get ready for tons of feedback. If you can deal with that, you'll do fine. He can also sound curt in email, so it is better to meet f2f.
He is extremely passionate about this class , gives good feedback on papers, but grades very hard. This class was the biggest workload I have ever had before. If you are just taking this class for the purpose of a WI I would not recommend it. I am taking two of the hardest classes in my major and this class is still by far the hardest.
Professor Weinstock is a wonderful man. I loved this class, and loved his input on the novels and movies throughout the course. However, the class was much more work intensive then I expected. He is not an easy grader as well. With all that said if you are interested in the subject, and willing to put in the work, you will get a lot from this class
Professor Weinstock is an amazing professor, who is passionate about what he teaches. The class was heavily discussion based, but he made it a comfortable environment to share your opinion. He gives a lot of essays, but always offers the chance of revision to raise your grade. Overall, great professor!
Nice guy, but really hard. I'm a senior English major and half of the content he wants us to read goes right over my head, and most of it is extremely boring. If you want to be challenged, go ahead. If you want to feel like you're stupid, and you like presentations AND essays due THE DAY AFTER SPRING BREAK, STAY AWAY!
Weinstock is a phenomenal teacher. He occasionally assigns difficult reading, but is very open to discussing whatever may have confused students during class discussions. He makes a point to create a safe, welcoming atmosphere for everybody and give great feedback. It's not an easy A class, but you'll enjoy it if you're willing to do a little work.
I've had Weinstock for 251 and 460, and he's an OUTSTANDING professor. His lectures are thought-provoking, and though the content is challenging, he's always willing to step aside and help. It's college, folks, expect it. He grades fairly, and he's very passionate, which helps to keep everyone engaged! I'd take him again in a heartbeat.
This is a level 400 class, so, yes, the reading can be challenging, but as a senior eng major, that should be thought of as a good thing. He doesn't expect us to 100% understand the readings on our own, which is why he doesn't quiz us on them, instead, we always have thorough, interesting, and engaging class discussions to help us understand.
Weinstock is a fantastic teacher. When a student asks him a question he doesn't answer right away. He thinks, and then gives a thought-provoking response. The work he assigns makes it hard not to relate object oriented ontology to boring everyday life. He makes this abundantly possible by giving you extreme autonomy in journals and discussions.
Weinstock gave me the most memorable comment on a paper of my college career--"I disagree with you entirely, but you support the position well" and I got an A on the paper. Now that I teach myself, I try my best to follow that model. Yes, he challenges students, but I found him fair and very human and he let us develop our own ideas.
He wasn't clear in assignment instructions, which caused many students to have unnecessary point reductions on assignments. Takes words very literally in papers. Students basically have to write mathmatical proofs with excessive citing to get an A or B on the essays. There were 15-20 students left out of 30 by the end of the semester-the rest quit.
This was the first time the course was offerd. The directions for the first assignment were a little unclear, but he clarified them and let anyone who wanted revise. There was no attendence requirement so lots of people skipped. He is funny and passionate about his job. Lots of reading but it was fun stuff. I would take this again.
This was an extraordinary seminar, truly worthy of having been a capstone. The readings were complex, but meaningful. Weinstock did not lecture, but guided us through the material and let us work through the ideas in our own ways. i'm very glad that I took it! Every English major should have a course with Weinstock.
This course had a lot of group discussion, which was wonderful. It was all about exploring new ideas in literature studies so it is more about participating than having an answer. Professor Weinstock always helped to push the conversation along and was always interested in what we had to say. Put effort in and you will be rewarded accordingly.
Dr. Weinstock is incredibly smart and his classes are thought - provoking. I really enjoyed this class, he did a great job of making our class discussions interesting and engaging. If you put in the work, your grade will reflect it. I thought the workload was fine for a writing intensive. I would take him again!
Dr. Weinstock is very passionate, encouraging, smart, and funny. Unfortunately, this class had no exams and, as a result, students often did not do the reading, which hindered class discussion. I think his classes would be more rewarding if he lectured more and recognized that CMU students often will not read unless forced.
He is a very opinionated grader. ENG 323WI is a UP and a writing intensive class, so most people think it wouldn't be too hard because it's a class that is open for anyone. However, that is not the truth. If you are not an English major, do not take this class with him or don't take this class at all.
Few CMU students know this (or care) but Dr. Weinstock has published 20 books, is among the most published faculty members at CMU, and is internationally renowned for his work in American literary studies and the gothic. He may seem low-key, but he is a hot-shot and knows what he is talking about. Take a course with him while you can.
The fantasy and science fiction course with Dr. Weinstock was my favorite class at CMU. The reading was wonderful and led to very interesting discussions. I recommend this course to anyone who needs a UP class and who likes to read. There is a lot of reading though. Dr. Weinstock is an excellent teacher though he grades hard
He took the "WI" seriously. Everything was a paper and reading. You write a paper on every book, and a 5000 page paper at the end. He is super strict about writing, but he would try his best to help you. He is very very passionate about fantasy and sf works so if you're not I suggest not taking this class. Every every time consuming.
If you have the chance to take fantasy/sf with Weinstock, you shoudl do it. it's a lot of reading, but its great stuff. Weinstock is funny and you can tell he really enjoys teaching this class. He knows his stuff and the discussions were always great. Theres a lot of writing but it is WI and he is clear with the requirements. It was a great class!
Prof. Weinstock is definitely a smart guy and knows a lot about his field, but the class was mostly taught by other students. Papers were very difficult and you will work to get an A. Do not take this prof unless you are already a good writer. He can come off as condescending or curt in emails, but if you take time to meet with him he is helpful.
Professor Weinstock was overall a pretty good teacher and I would give him a 3.5 if I could. The only issue I had with him is his expectations about the unit essays he gives were very unclear. Students usually come up with their own topics and sources. Other than that, Monsters and Their Meaning is a very interesting and surprisingly useful class.
Weinstock is really passionate about the HON201WI. That being said, he didn't space out the assignments very well and many of us often felt overwhelmed. Class is discussion heavy and spends a lot of time focusing on readings. Our class had a personal project, and mine was a dumpster fire because of he was unable to help me. He seems unorganized.
This is a really good class--Dr Weinstock clearly is passionate about it and knows his stuff. Reading was heavy but excellent and discussions were very interesting. He grades closely but lets you revise and if he doesn't know the answer to something researches it and comes back with an answer. I wish I could take fantasy/sf again!
Professor Weinstock is very passionate about the material he goes over in class and the discussions are a reflection on that. He gives a lot of options for fulfilling the writing portion of the class, but if you read and work hard you will be okay.
Professor Weinstock is a very down to earth professor. He often has us sit in a circle with him and structures lectures so its more of a forum and not just him lecturing at us. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and brings amazing energy to the classroom. He respects everyone in the class and really makes an effort.
Professor Weinstock can be a hard grader but he's very funny and is willing to work with you outside of class. Monsters and Their Meanings is a great class and I would definitely recommend taking it with Weinstock! Communicate with him and you'll do fine!
terrible
Very unusual class--students designed the units for the course which considered film, science fiction tv, social media, music, and gaming. Dr. Weinstock found readings for each and provided guidance but it was mostly student-led. I could see this going off the rails, but in this case it turned out well. And we went to see Black Panther!
If you arent passionate about monsters than this class is not for you. This class is more about race than actual monsters. Professor Weinstock is a very interesting man to listen to but is often times unclear with what he wants on papers. He will mark you down points if its not what he wants, even though often times he doesnt say what we wants.
Professor Weinstock is very passionate about this course. Although there is a lot of reading for the class, the books are an interesting read. The passion he radiates throughout class discussions and lectures is something that doesnt goes unnoticed. If you do the assigned readings and watch the movies this class will be nothing less than a joy.
Weinstock is very arrogant. Emailed him for feedback on a paper, received his feedback, followed the feedback and it was not to his standards. He seems to have standards for what a paper should be that he does not put on the directions documents on blackboard. Although it was tough to meet his standards, he does keep the class atmosphere relaxed.
Prof Weinstock is a brilliant man. This course is difficult only in that he requires you to come up with your own arguments rather than telling you what to write. Check in with him before you write and you'll do fine. I really loved the reading and laid back of this class.
I took the Monsters and Their Meaning class and the reading was very heavy and you had to get through books quickly. However, Jeffrey was a good teacher who was very passionate about the subject matter and always gave very good feedback on the papers you turn in.
He required us to watch "What We Do in the Shadows," for which I will be forever grateful! (Also The Shape of Water--also stellar!) You have to read six novels--not a lot by English class standards, but still time-consuming--but I enjoyed all the books and Jeffrey creates a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Great course!
This class was awesome! An interesting way to fill out a WI course. There are a few papers along with a research paper, and the class is reading HEAVY, but if you are busy, just buy the audio books! You won't be discouraged to the reading if you just have to listen instead. I hate english classes, and this doesn't feel as basic as reg ENG classes.
a really great professor would take a class with him again if it wasn't a WI he is a REALLY HARD GRADER when it comes to essays and I didn't get good feedback when it came to my essays I was just told to go to the writing center.
I did not mind this class but there were sometimes that I felt called out in class. Jeffrey is smart and he will let you know. However, I did learn a lot from him.
Dr. Weinstock is very nice but this class is all about critical thinking and if you can't think outside the box do not take this class. Get ready to read 8 books!!! So much reading and movies to watch. Get ready to write a good amount of papers too.
I really enjoyed the class and he knows what he's talking about but I also felt I had to prove myself worthy rather than being validated by how hard I worked and critical thinking. When I received feedback for 15+ worth of content he made three short comments about my grammar and not what I actually said. Very passive-aggressive.
This class right here had a lot of reading. A lot of critical thinking and if that's hard for you to think outside of the box... try a different professor. He does the most with extra credit and he can be rude in an email or if he's returning homework as well.
The monsters class is a great class but as others point out there is a lot of reading and a long research paper. Dr. Weinstock is very passionate and funny but makes you work for your grade! No a bad way to get a UP and WI though and we watched Fight Club! If you do the reading and go to class you'll do fine.
He can be very arrogant and condescending in his feedback, Wich will all be mostly about grammar and spelling. He also has a rule that if you have three mistakes on the same page of a paper you fail so be warned. His rubrics are unclear and unhelpful , if you have any classes you actually need to focus on don't take them with this class.
Dr Weinstock is a caring and passionate professor. In a weird way, he really shined once the course went online due to the virus. I enjoyed the course before, but after he reached out constantly to see if we were OK and really tried hard to help. The reading is great, although there's a lot of it, and a bunch of papers. But a good WI and UP choice
Dr. Weinstock is hilarious, and--in the online format--sends e-mails to check in with students, which often offer extra credit. Aside from forum posts, the course involves multiple papers. During each of these papers, you have a peer-review process and then an instructor review. This really helps the paper writing process.
Awful. Hardest Professor Ive ever worked with, its like he expects freshman students to write a PHD level paper when we arent even that experienced. I work for hours on the papers I write, and he replies with the most arrogant notes on my paper.
Dr. Weinstock is very organized compared to other professors Ive had in online classes, and he will send emails with feedback and reminders. He can be pretty rude via email and in essay feedback. He tends to be a pretty tough grader, so make you you follow directions very carefully.
Professor Weinstock is a nice guy on camera but cruel on grading. He lives and breaths off of his book that he wrote himself, so if you don' read that weeks chapter good luck. He will mark you down for the simplest mistakes yet when its an in-class activity he will brush it off making you feel as though he is understanding this is a freshman class.
Weinstock is very rude when giving feedback on papers. He holds you to extremely high standard for being a sophomore level class. Would not take this class again with him. However, he is very good at communicating with emails. I took this course asynchronous and it is organized well. Lot's of discussion boards. Course requires peer review.
Good guy!
He formats his class to the preference of the students and is always open to feedback on how the class should be taught. There are group projects that consist of a lecture on a specific text(s) and author that is supposed to foster discussion--make it a competitive game like Jeopardy. It will last the entire class and excite the students.
One of the best professors I've had. Very interesting topics discussed. Given a lot of liberty to write about pretty much whatever. Very clear feedback. Generous time to complete readings and assignments. Very nice man.
Dr. Weinstock is very passionate about teaching and focused on helping students evaluate sources and identify fake news and conspiracy theories. His textbook is surprisingly funny and he gives useful feedback. I recommend his class to anyone who wants to learn to write more clearly
I was dreading 201, but Dr. Weinstock made it as painless as possible. The focus on conspiracy theories was actually interesting and Dr. Weinstock really cares about his students checking in with us frequently. If you have to take 201, take it with him. He is very encouraging.
I will never take another class by Dr. Weinstock again. He is rude when giving feedback (acts like you should have a PHD when writing), he literally makes you participate or it affects your grade (mine was affected even though I participated). He make it seem like a high school class, and no matter how hard you tried in there it was never enough.
Jeffrey is amazing! He is such a fast grader, will occassionally give you extra credit just for reading his emails, super caring about everyone. Also a very interesting person. There are 4 essays, make sure you do the readings because you will talk about them in class. Participation points like everyday in small groups. He is so so nice!
Jeffrey can seem curt in emails but is very warm in person and tries hard to accommodate student requests and concerns. He provides clear feedback on papers and returns work quickly. The focus on conspiracy theories was interesting and I appreciated flexibility in choosing paper topics. Extra credit is made available on occasion. Recommended.
He cares about his students and is passionate about the subject, but he grades essays as if we were experts. Additionally, his classes can be tedious due to the repetition of the same topics.
Jeffrey is a great professor. Even though it was a required course, I found myself engaged with the discussions we had. The papers and reading are a little rigorous, but he provides helpful feedback and allows you to edit the paper for a better grade.
Dr. Weinstock is a good guy. Just be sure to read his feedback and make the changes he asks and you'll do fine.
There were four papers for this class, each where you get to choose your own topic within a given category. The coursework was easy. The in-class activities and reading seemed unrelated to the papers. I always questioned why the reading was necessary, but it was needed for graded in-class discussion. Nice guy though.
The class has 4 papers and each get longer even though you can choose your own topic he is particular on what the topic is. It feels like he likes to pick and choose who he will say stuff to. He offers extra credit if you read his emails.
Unclear expectations for every assignment, a clear rubric was never given and he graded HARD along with brutal feedback, be ready for everything you turn in to be torn apart. This class brought up many controversial topics concerning race, gender and politics and if you did not agree with his opinions on them it was very obvious. reading intensive!
The assignments do not follow a strict rubric which can be tricky. However, if you reach out to Professor Weinstock he will help you work through any questions you may have. This was particularly helpful for the final project, as Professor Weinstock's input helped to make my project stronger. Just make an effort to ask questions and be involved.
The reading and discussions in this class were wonderful! Because each final project is different, there is no rubric, which can make things a little tricky. However, reaching out with questions will clear things up. Highly recommended.
Honestly, I feel kind of bad for him. He provided all these opportunities for creative projects and getting more involved with the course, but almost everyone either didn't care or was too busy. He kept smiling but I could tell he was disappointed. The reading was great though and he's a nice guy.
The class was a lot of work and you really have to work for a good grade, however, he gives very clear feedback and is very passionate about the subject matter. There is a heavy focus on conspiracy theories and fake new. The class is mostly discussion.
My favorite course at CMU! We read novels and watched films with the theme of the afterlife. Lots of collaborative projects and small presentations. I really loved a lot of the reading and the class never got boring.
It is a pretty tough class and Prof Weinstock can be a tough grader. However, he gives great feedback and a preliminary score on rough drafts (which you can resubmit for a higher score). The grading relies heavily on skills learned in Eng 101. He is very passionate about what he does and is overall a caring guy who wants to see you succeed.
Professor Weinstock clearly demonstrates how passionate he is to be an English professor. That being said, if you are taking this class just for the university requirement then this may not be the class for you. Attendance and participation are mandatory and will have a significant impact on your grade. Overall, he will do his best to help you.
You might expect a full prof with 30 books teaching eng 201 to phone it in. But that isn't the case with Prof. Weinstock. He really cares about the course, esp. about conspiracy theories and democracy. The good news is he's passionate about it. The bad news is that he expects you to be as well. In sum: good guy, lots of work.
Decent guy. He's got his views like the rest of us, but doesn't grade on them and let's others speak. He'll make you follow the news and whats to know what you think. Papers are mostly open topic and you can revise. Follow his instructions and you'll do fine. Not much lecture. Just follow his instructions and you'll do fine.
My favorite professor so far here at CMU, makes the class genuinely enjoyable and interesting. Fairly easy class, though there is a lot of time consuming work. Lots of reading is required. Class is about a 2.5 in difficulty, but I gave a 4 based on how much time it takes up from my schedule.
Prof. Weinstock is passionate about the subject matter, but you'll need to put in the work. Attendance is mandatory, and the papers get progressively longer. Using unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook can really help with study prep.
Dr. Weinstock is definitely passionate about teaching! You read a few chapters within a few books in the class which is a bit annoying at times, but if you pay attention in class you will do fine on the few quizzes. Gives great feedback on papers and tries to make the class as fun as possible. Super great teacher who displays his expectations.
The kindest professor I have had at CMU. When my dad got sick, he bent over backwards to make sure I could pass the course. Comes into every class with a smile on his face and obviously loves what he does. Take a course with him if you can!
Little-known fact about Weinstock: he's among the most famous goth DJs in the country. Mention his radio show and he'll love you, hah! Also, he's seen every horror film ever. He can seem kind of intimidating and, yes, a tough grader, but he's very caring and passionate about what he does and is very helpful if you ask.
Prof Weinstock is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is super passionate about what he does, you can tell he really cares about his students. There is a lot of reading, but for the most part, the novels are pretty interesting. Attendance is mandatory, but it's a great and interesting class if you put in the work!
Professor Weinstock had a certain style for running the class, it worked for some but the majority it was unfavorable. I had asked for assistance finding some sources for a large paper. After using the sources he informed me were the best I looked at my grade on the paper and I noticed that he had deducted 2 letter grades for bad sources.
If you like horror and monsters, this is a good choice. A good mix of classic and new works, some films. A research paper and you can choose your topic. Jeffrey is very passionate and really enjoys the course. Recommended.
Three short papers and a research essay on a topic that you pick. Some interesting reading and a lot of class discussion. There are worse ways to pick up a UP course!
This professor was really not the best, I spent hours on an essay for him to give me a C because I "slightly" exceeded expectations. (1000 words on a 600 word min paper.) He gives A's and B's as honor grades even though honor grades are not something that CMU has. He is a very harsh grader and nothing is ever enough.
There was constant reading from multiple books that, if bought new, would cost at least over $100. He also required a huge paper (min 3500 words) while also have smaller papers. While the bigger paper had a rubric he would use, the smaller papers did not, so be ready to guess what you got wrong. Try to avoid his class if you like having sanity.
He isn't mean in person but a little ruthless when it comes to grading essays. You won't get an A unless you exceed the word count by like 600 words. He also takes a while to respond to emails. He occasionally gives out pop quizzes but they are easy if you did the reading.
He is the toughest grader I've ever had, but yet won't give a clear expectation on the outlines. One essay I get a D because I misinterpreted the rubric and the next I get a C because I slightly exceeded. Each essay I wrote was well over the 600 word mark and should've been A material. Oh and don't expect emailing him to help, it's his way or none.
I loved this class! It is kind of like a bookclub with lots of discussion. The reading and films are very interesting and Professor Weinstock is very caring and organized. There is a long paper but you can choose your topic. Highly recommend!
Requires and recommends many textbooks which can be costly. He is quite personable if you show care in your work and are a generally proficient student. Would not recommend for someone who is not already a good writer, his grading can be harsh for those with sub-par writing or analysis skills.
Potentially the most pretentious professor at CMU. Horrible grading criteria, grades based on vibes. Very unclear with expectations and very moody. Getting on his good side is a must, raise your hand a lot and communicate.
Awful professor! Critiques every little thing you do, and only grades on his own opinions, not the criteria that is requested. Do not take this jerks class unless you want to feel like you're studying for 5 different classes in one. Entry level class that was graded like a 500 level.
Best class I have taken at Central! Dr. Weinstock is very passionate and caring and the reading was a lot of fun There was a long research paper, but you can choose your topic. recommended if you need to pick up a WI or UP class.
Don't believe the haters - Jeffrey is awesome! Smart, funny, very positive, really cares about his students. The class has a lot of reading but it's a lit class (duh!) He gives tons of feedback (a little overwhelming) but is very clear about what he wants from you. tip: go to office hours if you have questions. Attendence does matter.
Super nice, makes everything as clear as possible, gives great feedback on writing.
Weinstock is a controversial professor, you either love or hate him. I really enjoyed his class however I understand those who dislike him. He can be quite passive aggressive over emails and can be a very tough grader. My advice is to get on his good side and everything will be fine.
Very nice and respectful professor. Gave a good understanding of the content we were learning. Great feedback as well. There are a lot of readings but it is an english class so like obviously there is going to be readings
Great guy, and the class was laid out super well. Attendance is mandatory, and absences add up quickly. Highly recommend if you're looking for a more chill English prof who still has some clear expectations and standards for you
Weinstock is my fav professor. He's incredibly intelligent, caring, charming, and handsome. He puts a lot of effort into making learning fun. If you're having trouble, just talk to him he's so understanding and kind. If you're willing to put in the work, he's willing to work with you. I LOVE HIM 🥰 10/10 and I wish I could take this course again.
