Jeff is a guy who makes class not drag on. He loves saying "In particular" and "play that game". He's a pretty good guy, but the class is definitely challenging. Make sure you're doing the practice problems or you'll do very poorly on the exams, which are challenging. They're based on the practice problems from the book. He loves calculus!
Calc 2 is a hard class. Period. But this guy is really good at explaining it, and obviously cares about his student's progress. Highly recommended for calc 2.
Class is very easy! He messed up in his lectures alot and we fell behind other classes(so he rushed through stuff for the final)but his tests were extremely easy. You didn't have to do all the practice problems, just a few to make sure you new what to do because he didn't try to trick you or anything on the tests.
Jeff Wheeler is a man of strength, honor, and beauty. He and Nick the TA are invincible and masters of the chalk board.
Master of The Blackboard. Nick Herl and Wheeler are Gods of the Math World
I loved Dr. Wheeler! He talks slowly and finishes each example entirely, it's easy to ask questions in class, really nice and helpful during office hours, homework was VERY reasonable, maximum 10 problems a week... I wish I could have taken his Calc 3 class =( ...also TA Alex Svirdov took his job VERY seriously. i miss them both!
Pretty good professor. he has no accent like a lot of the other professors do. Make sure you go to class and do the practice problems. the test is just like the practice problems.
This man rocks
Really chill and easy to get along with in class, and keeps conversations going with kids in the class even in a room with 80 students. He doesn't give much homework either. He's always willing to go over stuff you have questions about & make sure that you understand the material. I definitely recommend him. & his one TA Ryan O'Grady is awesome.
Dr. Wheeler worked hard to make his class more interesting and fun. He is very approachable and willing to help students. Don't be fooled though, this is a hard class.
Dr. Wheeler is a very cool guy who is very approachable and laid-back. He is very helpful in his office hours and good at explaining things. His midterms weren't that hard, he's picky about how you write things on tests though. And the final was brutal. Be prepared to work really hard all semester because the final can only hurt your grade.
Very good at explaining concepts. If he gets behind he will skip sections he considers to be "pre-calc." Makes his mid terms harder to prepare his students for the final. He can sometimes get sidetracked in class but overall he was a great teacher. I definitely recommend him.
I thought he was cool at first. Boy was I in for a surprise. Laid-back guy, unfortunately his laziness cuts in on his effectiveness as a teacher. I had him for calculus 3 and it sucked. I had to learn most of the material on my own, Wheeler's examples were few and confusing at best. Do not recommend, definitely not a "master of the blackboard."
Does not cover what he needs to to prepare you. As someone who hasn't had a math class in years, I really struggled, and while he did an excellent job of covering basic concepts, left you in the dark for the trickier problems. I went out and bought Calc for dummies before the final and learned more from it than from him and the book combined.
Does have a tendency to get off track quite frequently, but a very lenient guy who is more than willing to work with you. His examples are often what he likes, so you either get it and like it, or you don't. Probably better for upper level classes than Calculus. Great breath of fresh air at an Analysis-heavy school.
His grading baffles me. He grades very harshly. I had him take a look at my test again cause I thought he made mistakes, he said he didnt. I took it to another professor in the dept. and she said I should have had like a 20% higher than what I did. Took it back and he still didn't budge. He is helpful in office hours though.
Took Abstract Algebra with him. Class was far easier than I had expected, no complicated proofs were asked of us. On the other hand, he was really concerned about our progress, and made a big effort to make sure everyone got it. Also spent alot of time giving the math historical context. All in all, youll either love him or hate him.
I have no natural ability in math absolutely NONE at all. So calc 1 was extremely challenging for me with any teacher. However, Dr. Wheeler was ALWAYS accessible during office hours& also a SUPER nice guy. He really does care about his students and wants them to pass his final, so he grades super harshly on his tests. so work hard& go to his office
Reasonably good at explaining concepts through theory and examples. Humor and historical context of theories are a nice break from the usual math teacher. Calc2 is hard no matter where you take it--put in enough effort and you'll pass. Do all the practice problems and homework, and you'll probably get an A.
I had him for Calc 3 first semester freshman year. He is a very friendly guy who really knows his stuff and utilizes the chalkboard as well as anyone could. All homework is assigned from the book. He definitely prepared me for the final exam. All in all, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
horrible. laughs at your when you don't do well and spends 30 of the 50 minutes of class after getting a test laughing at your rather than explaining what you did wrong. DON'T TAKE HIM!!
I had a great time in his class this semester. I took Calc 1, and I found his test to be pretty fair, although the class averages were quite low. His tests were easier than the final, but he prepared us well. I definitely recommend him. Just be ready to hear each story he tells at least 5 times ;)
He is pretty well orginized with notes. However, he is really not that good at math. He will edit hard problems in class to make them easier and he cannot do the problems he expects the students to do for hw. He also wastes time talking about stuff that isn't relevent to the class and shows up late (every day). we were 1 wk behind other classes
Calc 2 is by no means an easy class, and Jeff Wheeler will pretty much remind you of that every day. He seems to have good intentions, but he goes off on useless tangents very often. I find myself learning much more from the textbook than from him. His exams are also unreasonably difficult. I would try and avoid him if possible.
In class he rambles on about things that do not pertain to the information that we're trying to learn. Class is almost no needed becasue he does no hard examples and does all the example we could just do ourselves out of the book. It's really not worth going to since no attendence is taken.
Jeffrey Paul Wheeler is an absolutely abysmal teacher. The test is, by far, about 30 times harder than any book problem. Tests from 2008 were 20 times easier than any test we've had this year. Apparently he woke up one day and decided he enjoyed failing students. Never take this professor. You will learn nothing. I'm getting my first C ever.
Wheeler is by far one of the hardest professors I've ever had. I barely learned anything from lectures, and he doesn't really assign homework until about 2 days before its due, and homework is an excruciating amount. His exams are unreasonably hard. He brags that apparently he's the best at getting his students ready for the final. False. No good.
This class is hard. In lecture, he's interesting and explains things well, but not at the complexity he puts on the tests. Bridging that gap is up to you. You need to put a lot of time forward to get a solid grade, but he will curve the tests (mostly because the class average will be terrible). Go to lecture, keep up with the hmwk, use the MAC.
Wheeler's an amazing teacher. A bunch of people are complaining because they failed the exams and they think it was too hard. The exams are NOT TOO HARD. Its only hard if you don't know the material.YES, he makes his exams TOO LONG and he TELLS you that, and that is the only issue with him.His TA Amine Hallab was awesome, take a class with him (TA)
Hands down the LAZIEST professor I've ever had; he is awful at teaching and honestly is the worst representation of the Math Department. He yelled at our class for being unprofessional, however he would consistently stroll into class at least 5 minutes late. Didn't know the material he was teaching. Avoid him at all costs.
Calc 2 is tough, as Wheeler will tell you. He's intimidating in class, but I think the fear was good. I worked hard in this class. As long as you study, do the homework (well), and ace Lon Capa, you should get a decent grade. His tests are always curved well because some people don't study and tank the tests. Take advantage of their stupidity
I did not like this professor. He was very rude and I do not think he graded fairly on exams. Every single lecture he rarely ever actually lectured about calculus, only about how "awesome" higher level calc apparently is and how stupid we all are.
Most of his lectures are spent cussing at the students and letting them know that he thinks they're stupid and that higher level calculus is so much better. Exams are rather difficult and the grading is rough. I think the only reason I passed this class is because I took calculus in high school. Avoid if you aren't a super math buff.
Good potential. However, incredibly lazy, like extremely lazy. Wouldn't recommend
This guy tries very hard to motivate his students because he knows a lot of them are either freshman or repeaters and all of them can do better. His teaching style may clash with his students' self glorifying mantras, which is why many grow to hate him. He's a very smart man, with a passion for teaching. Take him to learn math, not to get an easy A
He was very intimidating at the beginning of the year and he graded harshly at first, but once you learn his styles, you'll be fine. Sometimes he goes off on tangents and rants during class, but overall he is very receptive to questions. Expect to work for an A, its possible if you work hard and try to improve.
Really nice guy and genuinely wants his students to learn. Certainly not easy, but an A or a B is definitely possible if you're willing to put in the work and do all the practice problems. Not the best at clearly presenting concepts, but he will prepare you for the final and he'll replace your lowest midterm with your final if it helps you.
Calc 2 at Pitt is a hard class and Wheeler will remind you this everyday. You have to actually read Stewart's book and I suggest going to office hours they're helpful. Mandatory to get 100s on hw and lon capa seriously... You have to understand his humor he's not being mean he's hilarious and he actually loves math and teaching hence his tangents.
Dr. Wheeler is a hard teacher. He does example problems in class right from the chapter in the book which isn't very helpful. He is a funny guy in a kind of a*****e way--but I thoroughly enjoyed it. He is fair. At the end of the semester he will replace your lowest exam grade with your raw score on the final which is really helpful. Overall good.
He's a hard teacher, but he really pushes his students to learn the material. His students do far better on the final than that of the other sections. He's a funny guy too and is nice enough. His tests are hard, but the final and calc 3 will seem easy after having him for an entire semester.
I don't know why people complain so much about him. He was honestly one of the best math teachers I've ever had; his lecture notes were clear and full of examples (many of which appeared on his midterms later). You definitely have to go to class, just looking at the notes online won't be enough. Don't take offense to anything he says, he does care.
wouldn't recommend
Love this teacher. Great math teacher, but hard (what else do you expect from Calc 2 though?). Goes over material very well; prepares well for final. Only issue is sometimes he is too lazy to write out notes for later class sections. Super approachable - his office hours are great. Plus he is hilarious.
Says from the first day of class that you will have to work REALLY hard to do well, and many should expect to not pass. However, if you do the homework and study a few hours a day for the week before each exam, they are very doable. He can be intimidating in lecture, but uses humor and is very approachable in person.
Gets off track in lecture, but you have to go each day to keep up with material. This course material isn't his favorite so he isn't too interested in going that far in depth. Mid term was extremely hard but final was fair. The paper will serve to help your grade. As one of the harder math courses at Pitt, this wasn't too bad overall.
Wheeler is a phenomenal teacher who is very good at Calc. Very approachable even though he is a little intimidating. He really cares about his students and WANTS you to succeed. He is very upfront about what he expects of you from the start of the coarse so there are no surprises on the difficulty of his tests. I highly recommend taking Wheeler.
Great teacher. Gives you alot of homework but it helps you alot. He does get off track but if nothing else it keeps your attention when even he knows its boring stuff. Would recommend
Can be harsh, and I didn't get the best grade, but I did take away a lot from the class. He taught me that A) This class was hard, and so is life so get over it B) a bad grade is not worth worrying about because its not the end of the world C) and that professors can really care about their students. Really personable guy too.
Wheeler sucks! If you are not a natural autodidact take someone else. Classes aren't boring and he is entertaining but he can't teach. He spent an entire week on the easiest sections of series then blew through the hardest sections without examples. He makes his tests very hard. Expect low class averages and be able to do math very quickly in order to finish exams on time. You will do most of your learning on your own or if you can't do that you will have to get help.
Wheeler is a tough but fair teacher. He gives hard exams and lots of homework problems for you to do. If you do not do the work then you will not do well. He will chanllenge you, but he also cares if you do well or not. Great teacher and a great guy. Dont be fooled though. He will give hard exams and you might not do well all of the time.
Wheeler is an extremely difficult professor. I worked harder in that class than I did in my other classes combined last semester. Lecture is entertaining, but he is pretty poor at getting the material across. If you dedicate yourself to doing the optional homework consistently, a good grade is possible. It's very, very difficult, but passable.
He lives up to his name of being one of the hardest prof. He scares you into studying! His midterms are problems from past finals, HOWEVER it helps! Generous curve so don't freak out if you fail the first midterm. You'll be WELL prepared for the final.
Made calc 1 way harder than it needed to be (test answers had to look like proofs to get credit). Got a D in his section, took it again with a different professor and got a B while having significantly less homework.
He could be funny, but it's not worth it. He got very sidetracked and gave unhelpful examples. He spent way too much time on easy series and crammed harder stuff into just a few days. His exams were difficult, but doing the practice problems and visiting the MAC helped. I got a B+ in the class even while I consistently scored 30% over the average.
Wheeler's class is definitely tough, but you learn more than the other classes and his 2 midterms prepare you for the final better. Calc is a hard subject and don't expect sympathy. He cares but it's tough love. I wouldn't recommend taking him for Calc 1 UNLESS you also have to take Calc 2 as well.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS AT PITT. IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR IT PERIOD. YOU GOTO RECITATION, OFFICER HOURS, AND DO HOMEWORK AND PRACTICE PROBLEMS YOU WILL DO FINE. YOU GRADE DEPENDS ON YOUR WILLINGNESS TO WORK, HE GIVES YOU ALL THE TOOLS NEDED FOR SUCESS.
His classes are very difficult and requires a lot of work. His homework are harder than any other professors'. He had very high standards, the whole class didn't do so well but he does NOT curve the class. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
This class is in fact hard. However Dr. Wheeler is a brilliant man who will not only help you prepare for future math classes, but will do a good job of teaching you calculus. Dr. Wheeler kicked my butt, but I still respect him as a great teacher, loved his class besides my grades. Make sure you do the practice problems or you'll end up as I did.
Very nice guy, good teacher. He prepares you for the final exam (which is departmental) very well. His quizzes and tests are pretty much the problems right out of the book.
Wheeler will push you. This class was not easy, but it helped me a lot. People who complain about him are usually the people who did not seek extra help and then were not getting the grades that they wanted. Do your practice problems, get a 100 on HW, and study A LOT. I did not do well on my exams but ended up with a B because of HW and quizzes.
DIFFICULT. You must work your butt off to succeed. His tests are extremely hard, but the departmental final is much easier. Would not recommend taking this professor unless you are ready for a serious challenge.
The final midterm is said to be impossible, avoid at all cost. Unless you want to get a bad grade.
He is said to be very hard but it isn't true. Most people just don't take it seriously because it's calc 1 and they think they know it. He provides very good structure and prepares you for the midterms and finals. Everything on his tests were in the practice homework. Do the work and go in for help when you need it and you will be fine. Reccomended
Dr. Wheeler is about as fair a professor as there is. Not particularly hard and not particularly easy. Very personable and somehow makes math enjoyable. There is a lot of homework, but this is expected as it prepares you for the exams. Tests can be difficult, but generally reasonable. I would recommend this professor.
Difficult tests, but you will be incredibly prepared for the departmental final. Fair grader, clear expectations, interesting lectures -- just do the work and do what he says, and you'll do fine. Definitely recommend.
The class itself is fairly easy(relative to calculus) and he does a good job of teaching. HW and tests can be hard but prepares you well for final and if you do well on final he can make it very beneficial for you
Interesting course, exams are fair. Always available to help, and really cares about his students. You will have to work hard, but you will learn and be better off for it. Would most definitely take again.
Dr. Wheeler is one of the most thoughtful professors I've met, and taking this class with him convinced me to take up a math major! Very entertaining and engaging in class, and really wants to make sure everyone learns. One of my favorites thus far.
It's not a hard class but it can be demanding to figure out what needs to be done. Homework counts for a lot and it's where most of the work is. If you're not good at math, you're going to have a hard time.
Class material is generally easy and he knows what he's talking about, unfortunately he is very unclear in what he expects you to know and kind of rushes over the notes.
He is really smart and funny . He does his best to make math enjoyable. Expect a lot of homework, but hw will definitely prepare you for exams. I will recommend him.
The tests were pretty fair- all questions are slight variations of homework problems, so definitely pay attention to those! Lectures were weird because he's entertaining but relies on powerpoint heavily so they were overall meh. His strength is in office hours: I went over an exam with him and he gave me points back for having a good argument.
Lectures off of powerpoints which are not the most helpful. Tends to go off on tangents a lot. However, the material is not too difficult so you can usually figure it out when you do the HW. HW counts as 40% of the grade. Tests are very straightforward and based on HW problems.
Do the problems in the textbook and you will be fine. Also, problems are repeated from older exams, so those are helpful study guides.
Overall one of the best teachers I've ever had
Total dad at heart. He really cares about his students and go to his office hours! He'll get to know you better which totally helps out. Tests are very hard but fair. He explains things well but sometimes gets flustered with a big crowd or gets off topic. Be prepared to do the homework.
If you have the chance to take Wheeler, do it. He may be a tad clustered from time to time but put it this way: Calc 2 at pitt is considered one of the most failed/hardest course they offer. I got a better grade in Calc 2 than I did psychology because of how good wheeler was. Work hard, you will pass.
He keeps his lectures interesting, tells lots of random stories. His tests are hard, but they prepare you well for the final.
Professor Wheeler was the best professor I have had at the University of Pittsburgh. He's an extremely funny guy, which really helps in class. His tests were difficult, but it prepared me extremely well for the final. I feel as if I have gained as much knowledge as I could with him as my professor. Definitely recommend.
Said many times that he hates calc 1 and finds it boring. It shows.
Doesn't treat students fairly or respectfully. Walked out of an exam while most students were still working - he failed to communicate that the time was up, so we had to sprint after him to hand in our exams. He also put 3 chapters on the final that we did not properly cover in class. Essentially, his students got punished for his mistakes.
Classes aren't well structured and syllabus was not clear about which chapters and chapter sections needed to be read. Generally not well organized, would not recommend at all.
Extremely difficult professor for a class that is supposed to be for first year CS students. Most people I talked to said they had no trouble in 441 with other professors but the class average on our mid term was in the low 60's. Does almost nothing to help students prepare for exams, just says "do the homework problems again." Recommend avoiding.
wheeler really knows his stuff. i felt obligated to go to lecture but am not sure how helpful it was. he's fun in class, gets off topic a lot, but grades fairly in my opinion. you will learn and you will do fine as long as you put a lot of effort in, which is a must in any calc class. he might not be the best but whatever grade you get is on you
Dr. Wheeler wasn't very effective in this class. He lectured too quickly, assuming students would pick things up without processing them. I attended but had to teach myself a huge portion of the material. HW is doable and worth 40% of your grade. Midterm was too long, so tackle the easiest problems first. Final seemed fair. Don't recommend him.
In regards to his Calc 1 class, I do not recommend taking Dr. Wheeler. The subject bores him, so he skips over sections, gets off topic, and ended up several lectures behind other classes by the end, giving less time to prepare. His midterms are significantly harder than some other calc 1 teachers. He is a nice guy, but not the best teacher.
I love Professor Wheeler! I had him for both optimization and combinatorics. Both classes were very interesting, and I found them to not be super difficult overall. The only downside to him is he's very difficult to reach over email, your best bet is to go to him in person if you have a question. Overall, he makes the classes interesting.
He is hilarious in the class but that won't help you pass or understand calculus. He is the worst teacher I have ever seen for mathematics. Wheeler does not put much effort in teaching you. He just skips some parts of the derivation and will leave you clueless. He does not teach properly and you will have to do most of the course from khan academy
One of the best Professors I've ever had. Uses humor a lot to drive home important concepts and makes learning the material fun. Very easy to visit at office, and very willing to talk and explain the concepts to you. I took him for calc 1 and again for calc 2, if you take him you'll definitely be prepared for the final.
Dr. Wheeler is a great professor for calc 1. It is NOT an easy class, and Wheeler makes it even harder, as his tests are quite long and difficult. However, because of the difficulty, you are VERY MUCH prepared for the final exam. He is hilarious and makes lectures fly by; definitely recommend!!
Dr. Wheeler is a really smart guy and has a great sense of humor. I could see quieter students being intimidated by him because he screams a lot but he's very approachable and easily excitable.
Dr. Wheeler is a good guy. He is funny and makes calculus class as interesting as he possibly can. However, he focuses on unimportant things and crams the useful information in the last 10 minutes. He doesn't do many examples in class. His quizzes are very very hard. He gives book problems to prepare you for his exams, but his exams are way harder.
The class might be interesting to someone, but I don't think the class is helpful to improve my grades.
He's kind, funny, and obviously very educated about math, but he doesn't always take teaching seriously enough. He was 15 min late to class multiple times this semester, and he doesn't lay the material out clearly when exams are approaching. He's a great and intelligent guy, but if you want an organized professor, he's not the best choice.
His grading on test is not as fair as it could be. If you solve a problem in a different way than he wants, he will not even give you partial credit. He also makes strange comments in his grading that are pretty meaningless. Overall, he means well but tries to make his class seem more important than it really is.
I had Dr. Wheeler for Calc I and thought he was awesome! He comes off scary the first few days but if you go to his office hours and show him you care he will help you. He taught me how to work hard and be a college student! Some people do not care for his teaching style, because he can get off topic from time to time, but I never minded it
He's scary at first but he's a really nice guy, especially if you go to his office hours. His yelling in class in entertaining. He does put sad face stickers on your test sometimes if you do something really stupid. You gotta do the practice problems if you wanna do well though.
While I do like Dr. Wheeler as a person, his teaching is not the best. Lectures are disorganized and barely cover the problems on the homeworks. Recitation was needed to clear up concepts and to actually learn how to do the problems. Homework not graded quickly. Dr. Wheeler's enthusiasm toward class still inspired me to switch to math major though.
I pretty much knew everything in CS0441 already because I'm a math major, but I came to every class anyway for the jokes. Wheeler is extremely funny and has great stories, and you can tell that he really enjoys math.
Wheeler is definitely the harder of the 441 profs. Lectures didn't encompass the entirety of the material. Going to Recitations is needed to do well. Homework was about 5 hours a week and 40% of the grade but the most important part. Exams demanded you to know everything and rather lengthy. Recommended if you want to actually learn discrete math.
Tough grader, but regardless of professor, calc 2 is one of the harder classes at the university. Goes through material rather quickly, but does quite a bit of practice problems to drive certain points home. Exams are long and pretty challenging, so go in with a good grasp of the material. Always kept class interesting though!!
Dr. Wheeler is probably the toughest Calc 2 professor at Pitt, but he understands how to prepare his students for the final. Never bored in his class, by far my favorite professor this semester.
It was his first time teaching 1080 when i had him for it. He admitted it wasn't his field but wanted to get into it more so he offered to teach the class. His lectures were decent for the first half of the material, but the second half was very disorganized. He ended up giving the same lecture multiple times and had to cancel a midterm.
He often gets tripped up or confused on his lecture or takes a 30 min tangent to tell a story he's already told 4 times - we were in chapter 2 for 3 months. He'll take multiple classes to finish 1 ex and it's nowhere near enough to do homework with. He's excited about the material, but lectures are lacking or he gives the same one 3 times.
Wheeler is one of the funniest people I've ever had the fortune of meeting. He was always helpful in office hours, and as someone who was afraid of calculus and general math through all of high school, I wouldn't have made it through calc one or two without him. He knows what he's talking about, even if sometimes he says nonsense. Wonderful man.
Wheeler is my favorite. I had him for calc 1 and calc 2. His tests are complicated versions of everything you learn, which makes them really difficult, but he really prepares you for the departmental finals of both classes, because youre used to the harder examples. Hes also really hilarious. He cares about your grade as much as you do.
Critics of Dr. Wheeler clearly don't know the man enough. Wheeler will help you fully understand calc... IF you ask for the help. A simple one-on-one with him makes it VERY clear that he really cares about his students and their grades, even if it's not explicitly shown. He's brutally honest, but it's naive to think that caring equates to babying.
Wheeler is definitely a hard professor but also cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed. He does very few examples in class but they illustrate important concepts and he usually explains them clearly. His exams are very representative of the dept. final so if you prepare yourself well enough for those the final wont seem so bad.
Classes were average. The class is passable if you're friendly with him. I was not a fan of the tangents he would go on or his lectures, particularly because I find examples useful. Ok teacher at best.
He goes on so many tangents, it's unheard of. Some are funny but it gets annoying. I go to his office hours and he talks for several minutes about useless information. It's a huge waste of time! I've known him for a while too outside the classroom and I know friends who took him. I thought he wasn't bad in the beginning but it just gets worse.
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures get a little wild when he goes on tangents, but he was super helpful in office hours and genuinely cares for you. He's a loud-mouth and a little abrasive, but I absolutely loved him.
Pretty funny guy, great for learning Discrete Math for Computer Science. Get ready to do about 8-10 hours of homework every single week and be ready to fail the midterm (average was 50). Very arrogant of how smart he is. Assigns 1-70 problems A-J. READ THE BOOK or YOUTUBE everything or you will never understand.
Jeff Wheeler is a very very good Prof. Extremely passionate and hilarious, overall great guy. I loved taking CS 441 with him, you learn a lot of discrete math. Homework heavy, tests are reasonable if you work hard. If you want to take him, be prepared to work very hard. You will learn so much discrete math and have a lot of fun.
Calc 2 is an extremely hard class no matter what, and going to class feels mandatory to keep up. The finals are department wide but the midterms are made difficult to prepare you for it. Wheeler is a great professor and is hilarious, but can get off topic quickly if allowed
Wheeler is absolutely hilarious. Lectures are helpful when he gets examples done because these typically show the most difficult situations. However, he goes on tangents a lot and sometimes took a week to get through one day's worth of material. Extremely helpful in office hours.
This funny man requires a textbook that has already stopped published.
Be able to take a joke and have fun. Lots of homework, but he gives you a week to do it and it's not impossible. Read the textbook or go to office hours for stuff not covered in lectures. IF YOU STUDY FOR THE MIDTERM YOU'LL DO FINE! You can make your own formula sheet! I got an 84% (class avg 73%) with a moderate amount of studying
Hilarious in class, however, sometimes this can lead to him going off on tangents. If you try you can easily refocus him by asking a question. Very effective at teaching you EXACTLY what you need to know to pass his class. DO NOT expect him to walk you through a problem, he is good because he makes you learn how you work through difficult problems.
Professor Wheeler is a great lecturer who is incredibly passionate about the material. Class does get crazy with some tangents, but he keeps class interesting and teaches the material very well. There is a lot of homework and you do need to read , but you will really learn the material. The midterm/final is difficult but you do get a formula sheet.
Wheeler is a tough professor in that he will challenge you and you will need to put in effort to learn, but he's a great guy with a wicked sense of humor, and you learn a lot. A lot of useful knowledge is gained from his class, don't be scared of the difficulty!
Wheeler is funny, but so unorganized that it became frustrating. He shows up late even on exam days, never knows what the scheduled lecture topic is, always just does a random example out of the book. He is helpful if you go to office hours. Tests are difficult but fair. DO THE TEXTBOOK PROBLEMS and you'll be fine
I loved Wheeler. People hate on him because he expects you to study the content well, but his expectations are clear. He gives a ton of hints for exam content and will go over examples in class as many times as you need until you understand. He genuinely cares about his students' learning--definitely recommend taking him. Do the HW and you'll pass.
The lectures provided by Dr. Wheeler have been some of the best of my academic career. His tangents serve to only enhance the class itself. What a fun guy. The class was hard, no curve, but if you work hard on the homework you will be perfectly fine as the exams directly model the homework problems. He makes you work for it but is very fair.
YOU WILL SUFFER I already had calc before, but this was different. lectures were literally boring and hard to maintain attention on, he could not stop speaking about his marine dad and that ( you need to work hard). Grading the midterm took him half the semester, and we didn't cover the whole material on time, so we had to work on vacation.
Dr. Wheeler was one of the worst professors I've taken. I had him for an online class although I can't imagine he's any better in person. He was disorganized and generally a mess. By the middle of the semester we were 2 weeks behind the calc 1 schedule and we never caught up. He constantly ranted about everything and wasted lots of class time.
Wheeler is completely disorganized during lecture and while grading that it completely diminishes his instructive(ish) lectures. So many tangents while talking, takes weeks and weeks to grade. Only way to succeed is to get on his good side in office hours and do as many of the homework practice problems as possible. He does know his math, though.
Dr. Wheeler is tough, but his toughness will help you succeed in the long run. As long as you do the book problems and online practice tests, you will pass this class easily.
you will take the class on your own, be very prepared for the worse
Dr. Wheeler is not a good professor. He flat out told our class that "it doesn't matter how bad my lectures are, you still have to understand the material." He does a total of one example the entire class period and then screams at us for doing poorly on a quiz on stuff we haven't even seen before. Tough grader and overall just a harsh man.
Genuinely one of the worst I've had. People ask him to do more examples in class so we can actually understand the content and he flat out just says no. We got behind after the second week of the semester because he spends the entire class on one problem and just goes on extremely long rants. Don't recommend.
Doctor wheeler has been, without a doubt, my favorite lecturer at The University of Pittsburgh. His lectures are hilarious and engaging, and he inspired a deep sense of wonder in me to explore higher mathematics. That said, he isn't afraid to let you know his expectations, and he will unashamedly admit to trying to fail his calculus students.
If you want to do well in calc 2, DONT take wheeler! He spent entire classes rambling & telling stories, then ended up being 2 weeks behind, & had to cram in like 6 lessons into our last 3 classes. He really isn't helpful at all and I basically taught myself the whole entire class. In the nicest way possible, he is the worst teacher Ive ever had.
Dr. Wheeler had a very different teaching style during the pandemic, but he was also pretty laid back with grading too. It was very helpful to have the recorded lectures and the exams were pretty straightforward based on the homework problems.
Do not take him! He doesn't wear masks during his lectures when his family members are tested positive for covid!
You are going to need to teach the material to yourself for the entire semester if you take this class.
Unprofessional.
Business Calc has a tough curriculum and that is not Dr. Wheelers fault. He pushed me to my limit, but that was what it took for me to get an A-. He doesnt fall behind on topics like other classes which means the pace is incredibly fast and challenging but I felt very prepared for the final. If youre not self motivated dont take this class.
Dr. Wheeler is knowledgeable, but he is not a good lecturer. He is often unfocused in class and goes on long tangents in almost every lecture. In his class, he assigns lots of homework that does not really supplement our learning. Do not take his Business Calculus class unless you have already taken a calculus class and know what you're doing.
I would not have done well if I hadn't already taken calc. Wheeler spends entire class periods berating students for their low test scores, switching between verbal abuse and tough-love speeches that are meant to be inspirational. He was consistently late to class and usually only got to 1-2 examples. Makes painfully inappropriate and awkward jokes
Dr. Wheeler has a very difficult bus calc class that is not for the light of heart. Do the webwork and practice problems to do well. Go to office hours and make sure he knows you, you're more likely to succeed. He comes off tough in the beginning but warms up eventually. Laugh at his jokes (even if they're not funny) and study A LOT.
wheeler was so bad. i worked my ass off to get a B and i took ap calc in hs. i only passed this class bc of our TA. wheeler has good intentions, but is simply a horrible teacher. you have to teach everything to yourself, so if you're bad at that, don't take him. he's super funny, but his inability to actually teach info far outweighs that. AVOID!!!
It was an extremely difficult class with an extreme amount of work. Wheeler is a very funny teacher but the jokes can fall more on the aggravating side after spending days studying to get a 65 on an exam. If you have this class you need to utilize as many extra resources as you can. I suggest the O'Hara Student Center.
absolutely abysmal teaching. i could go on for days about how terrible he is. do not take this INTRO level class with him unless you know lots of calculus, bc even if you come in w/ knowledge its super hard. if this is your first calc class, please take anyone but him, or else you'll end up failing or dropping out. seriously, STAY AWAY!!!!
I am not a fan of all of this Dr. Wheeler slander found on this page. He was one of my fav professors. If you do the work you will do well. Taking his class will prepare you for the final (which is departmental) more than any other prof (many students fail this). His class prepares you for the final exam and for college. I recommend the challenge
Dr. Wheeler did give a lot more homework than the other professors, but in the end it really makes a difference (makes you more prepared for final and boosts grade). He may be a tough professor, but it does help you succeed. If you put in the time, effort you will do well. I really recommend going to office hours, it really makes a difference.
Dr. Wheeler likes to go on tangents, and sometimes becomes behind on material. You have to read the textbook and do the practice problems to succeed. He goes over the topics in lectures and has a great sense of humor. If you cannot handle insults well, take another class.
I had Dr. Wheeler for academic foundations and he was a great teacher. He was always giving feedback and entertaining the class. He is a nice guy with good intensions. If you end up having him for a math course, please study and go to his office hours with specific questions. He may be intimidating at first, but he is a good person.
Awesome if you have trouble paying attention in class Truly cares about students Funniest man on earth My friend never went for a while because she thought he'd yell at her, not the case, he's super nice and office hours are super helpful Have a separate notebook for hw and notes Have to do work problems Yes that may mean spending hours on calculus
Math 0230 is a difficult course with a difficult final, especially for those who didn't take BC Calc in high school (I did). Wheeler is not an easy professor but he prepares his students thoroughly for the final exam. Dr. Wheeler does an excellent job motivating his students to work hard and improve on a personal/academic level.
Professor Wheeler isn't for the faint of heart. His exams are difficult, but it prepares you for the final and he offers to drop your lowest midterm grade and replace it with the scaled final if it helps. He gives a lot of homework and without it, you won't succeed. If you want to pass, take Wheeler, but be prepared to do an obscene amount of work.
Wheeler is an excellent teacher and very helpful in office hours. He covers the material in an interesting way, but won't go over information that he expects you to know already. However, his midterms were unbelievably easier than the final, so be careful.
his class was so insanely hard. BUT! calc 2 is just hard. yes it was so much work and I had a lot to do outside of class, but when we got to the departmental final, our class was better off and better prepared
amazing professor, actually made me love math. best lecturer i've ever had, never ever dreaded going to lecture (just dreaded the material). calc 2 is so hard, but if you do the work you can get an A. it's more work than any other class i've ever taken.
Wheeler was tough, but if he wasn't I don't think I would have learned as much as I did. I failed both of my midterms but my final replaced both of those grades. Wheeler expects students to put in the effort, and he forced me to truly learn the material and turn things around. His exams are hard but prepare you well for the final.
Dr. Wheeler loves to go on tangents causing him to get behind in lecture, but he is hilarious and has been one of my favorite professors. He is very tough on his students, and honestly sounds mean at times, but it is mainly because he cares that you do well. He offered to replace midterms with the final if it helped our grades which was great.
Wheeler is hilarious and cares about his students (even though he likes to pretend he doesn't). Is this the math class where you'll learn the most material? Absolutely not; the man goes on tangent after tangent, but I'm not complaining. His exams are fair and only cover things from the homework
He's one of the best hard science prof I've had. He makes the lec utterly enjoyable. He's passionate in class cuz he says his family doesn't let him talk math so we're all his friends lol a joke ofc. He is also very caring as he mentioned multiple times about mental health in class. I will definitely take another class w/ him. Do put in effort tho!
cool dude
"Wheeler is a bad teacher because he doesn't do my work for me". WAHH WAHH CRY ABOUT IT TEAM WHEELER ALL THE WAY MY MAN LEGIT TURNED ME INTO AN ACADEMIC WEAPON LIKE BEFORE HIS CLASS I THOUGHT I WAS A TOP G BUT HE FR HUMBLED MY AHH. Actually though thank you Dr. Wheeler for being the GOAT. -Yankees Hat
Could be a bit unorganized occasionally and cracks goofy jokes A LOT during lectures to keep you engaged. Wheeler could definitely make it to stand-up comedy shows lol. Grading is definitely fair and be sure to go to office hours as much as possible. He is not as intimidating and scary as he appears to be.
funny guy and really knowledgable but scattered and unprepared for lectures. if you pick his brain and go to office hours you can learn a lot from his class. homework and exams aren't too bad and he'll tell you topics and stuff beforehand. as math profs go you cant really go wrong with wheeler
Good lecturer, very knowledgeable, and the grading was fair. That being said I would probably never recommend taking him. Every class he would arrive 1-5 minutes late, yell/scream a few times, and tell some unrelated personal anecdote (that he had probably already told).
Very disorganized and does not post anything on canvas. Because he never answers emails, if you miss a class you are pretty much screwed. He then decided to post all of the homework problems 1 week before the midterm, so we got a week to finish what should have taken us at least 2 months to finish in any other class.
Tough but if you listen to everything he says, you will succede (practice problems!!)
He's gruff, but hilarious. Think of Dr. House, but for math. He enjoys what he teaches, and gives interesting lectures. He goes off-topic constantly. He's tough on grading, and won't hesitate to call out your BS. He's not accommodating, and expects you not to fall behind under any circumstances. If you can put up with him, take him. I couldn't.
I would not suggest taking Wheeler for linear algebra. He wasted a lot of time during lectures and was generally pretty unprofessional and rude at times. He is a hard grader and leaves unnecessary comments on exams. He can be funny, but the class is a waste of time. We didn't get to an entire chapter that was on the final.
Dr. Wheeler is one of the best math professors in the department; a fantastic lecturer. May come off as a bit rough around the edges, but get to know him and he'll make sure you pass. Doesn't always respond to emails but just walk into his office and he'll be more than happy to help you. Easy exam, hw from the book.
Having Wheeler was a fantastic experience I will not forget. Professionally speaking, he knows what he is doing. What he assigned was always very fair in quantity and difficulty. On top of this he gave extra credit opportunities. Also, he is the funniest professor I have ever had, despite him shattering his funny bone during the semester.
Intense but rewarding lectures with Professor Wheeler. Expect a tough grading curve, but his methods really work if you put in the effort. unstuck study was a lifesaver for extra practice and prep.
Dr. Wheeler is a great guy who is incredibly knowledgeable. Unfortunately, while the class was interesting, he goes off on tangents every 5 minutes, covering nearly no material during a class. This leaves us quite unprepared for homework. He does essentially give reviews for exams that cover exactly what will be on it.
Worst professor ever seen!
I wish I could give him a high rating. He is a really funny guy and I like him as a person, but he did not handle this course material well. I could see how he would've been a good professor for any other class, but he didn't care at all about Calc1&2, which he actually said himself. We barely got to Calc 2, only touching on series and integrals.
TBH Wheeler is a good teacher. I did not skip any classes and that's just what you gotta do if you wanna get an A. Do the practice problems. Do all the lon capa. And, before a midterm do all of it again. His method of "just keep doing more practice problems" really works. He replaces the lowest midterm with the final which is very generous.
You will not pass this class if you do not do the practice problems as he preaches. I did most of them for the first midterm and did way better than the rest of my class who did not take his advice. He is willing to help you learn, and he wants you to be literate in math. He believes in each of his students that they can succeed. TAKE DR. WHEELER!!
Great person, not the best professor. Acts tough but wants you to succeed and mostly helpful in office hours. Overall grading is fair but will take off points for notation errors. 50/50 chance of him responding to emails, posting homework, or grading something in a reasonable time. If you have no experience with calc, 0235 is not the one for you.
Dr. Wheeler really cares about teaching calculus. Bombed both midterms, but he's generous and rewards you if you learn from your mistakes by the final. His midterms made the departmental final look easy. I have picked up the phrase "do what you can and hope for the best" from him, and I intend on carrying the advice with me for as long as I live.
Dr. Wheeler was an amazing professor. He does go on random rants during class and will yell but its to make class more interesting. He genuinely cares that you do well. Doing practice problems is a MUST. If you do the practice problems the exam will feel so easy. He cares a lot about writing math correctly, but it helped a lot for the final.
Had Dr. Wheeler for academic foundations. He didn't teach the class because we had a UTA, but he was always there. He has hilarious anecdotes, advice, and general energy. He is such a great guy but I could totally see how people find him unorganized lol
Worst professor I've ever had. Would show up looking hungover, make "jokes" about how he'd been drinking last night, yell at us about how it "isnt his job to teach us math", and constantly put down our high school math teachers for no reason (I quote: "I know more math than your highschool math teachers can even IMAGINE"). Avoid if possible.
Funny, but not a great prof. Super disorganized and not prepared half the time. Spends class trying to figure out his own mistakes. One time someone asked about algorithm runtime and he literally just said “I don't know.” His textbook makes more sense than his lectures.
Correction to previous rating: it was intended for MATH1101, not MATH1100
very unprofessional!
Great guy, hilarious but stern. Grading is harsh and at times expects too much. He seems angry, but he does care, and he's helpful in office hours. He's so smart and teaches what he likes much better than what he doesn't, and there's a clear difference in his teaching. That makes me kinda sad because he can teach material better than he does.
HE IS JUST HORRIBLE! He gave an attendance quiz in recitation (The TA said the recitation was NOT mandatory) and he just counts a 0 for those who didnt show up. He is a horrible person in general, does not KNOW HOW TO TEACH! PLS BE READY TO LEARN EVERYTHING ON UR OWN TIME! The class is graded 55% on just the final (WHICH IS HARD and LENGTHY).
Genuinely the worst prof ever. Made everyone's lives hell and would joke about failing his students. Everytime I walked out of that class, I felt more confused than I was before about a certain topic. CANNOT teach. He just says "I dont know" or replies rudely when you have questions. PLS DO NOT TAKE HIM EVEN IF YOU ARE AMAZING IN CALC
Overall he is a very caring guy and helpful in office hours. He will try to scare you during the first few lectures, and it is very important to listen to what he is saying. This class covers calc 1 and 2, including all of Calc 2 in HALF A SEMESTER. IF YOU AREN'T A MASTER AT CALC DO NOT TAKE. I don't care what your advisor says. You will not enjoy.
Not sure if personal issues played a role or if he's just evil, but Jeff was by far the worst professor I've had at Pitt. Extremely disorganized, couldn't solve his own problems, got angry when students struggled, arrived late yet criticized late students, told students to ask questions but was rude when they did, and explained topics very poorly.
Dr. Wheeler was the funniest professor I had and was highly engaging in class. He was also very available for office hours as well. But be warned this class is very difficult and you might not reach the end of the subjects that are supposed to be covered. Show up for recitation since near the end he gave grades for attendance. You cannot slack off.
