his midterms and final have pointless questions in it and he is very unorganize

he is a hottie
Lectures were scattered, tests were filled with obscure questions that were not covered in class and were designed to trick you. Boring overall.
(winter qrtr)Lectures were sometimes boring. Homework was pretty easy but disliked using the virtual dig. No papers to turn in and tests were ok but sometimes asked questions irrelevant to what he was teaching. No actual readings for this course.
Extremely boring class and lecture. He once spent half an hour talking about pinon nuts. I wanted to shoot myself. If you are forced to take one of his classes, bring a crossword puzzle so you don't go insane from extreme boredom.
good prof. and fair exams
VERY HOT!
I made a mistake thinking that this class was fun and interesting. The lectures are so stupid. The questions on the quizzes are tricky and difficult. His lectures are irrelevant to the quizzes and random. Bring a pillow to this class.
Thought this intro class would easy..mistake! he is a hottie, but lectures can drag and tests/quizzes are WAY tricky. tests on details mentioned in passing...not that fun of a class..
Lectures are so boring. Tests are ridiculously difficult. Professor is not helpful at all. He also made rude comments when I approached to ask a question. Not recommended
wow, this class is horrible. enough said
His lectures are read off of a printed outline he has, so the whole time it sounds like a sixth grade kid giving his first speech. Very awkward lecture style and hard to follow and pay attention to. Also, his tests are really hard and ask questions dealing with insignificant details of subjects.

this is pretty difficult for an intro class. the quizzes cover a lot of material and aren't easy to take- he asks trick questions. lectures are difficult to follow; what he writes on the board doesn't match what he says.
The teacher seems like a nice guy but his teaching style just sucks. He lectures on random stuff and rarely writes stuff on the board. There are four quizzes 10 % of your grade each which are impossible because they ask minor details. If your really willing to spend time and review the material every night, go ahead and take it, if not, drop it lik
This guy is the worst teacher at UC Davis who can speak english. I've had TA's imported from China who are better teachers than him. He has no idea what he's doing and even some graduate students know more about the class than he does.
He's the worst professor ever. He doesn't know how to teach..just read off some printed sheets he has. The lecture is VERY boring, and the tests are very random and hard. He does not post grades(because he does not know how). Also he does not post the stats so you have no idea how you compare to the other students in the class.
Professor Eerkens is an excellent teacher and lecturer. I find his tests fair and representative of the material he presents in class. I feel he does a great job and is a fair grader.
He's as nice as he is pretty (which is very), just watch yourself on tests they tend to be a bit random and tricky.
This class SUCKED. Jelmer is a bad teacher. His powerpoint slides were pictures from google and he relied on his own notes (which he didn't show) as a crutch. He didn't seem to have a good knowledge of the subject either. Plus the class wasn't just about California. The readings and the movies were incredibly lame as well. Bad teacher.
Lectures feel like a blast of information, too much to handle. Uses powerpoint, but never posts slides, which would have been helpful since I didn't catch a lot of stuff. Scatterd lecture style, grades very hard. Lecture style not that engaging, I've almost fallen asleep quite a bit. He is a nice and very knowledgable professor though.
He is really cute!!
Lectures boring except when students ask questions and he goes off-topic about interesting aspects of subject in his answer. Tests were fill-in-the-blank, M/C, short essay, T/F. Grading on essays very subjective & some fill-in-blanks were obscure. Study hard and you can pull off a good grade. Go to OH, he takes that into consideration. Nice guy.
He's a nice guy, and despite what people say about him reading off notes and whatnot, I think he was a decent teacher. Almost all of my teachers read off of notes...Get used to it. As far as ease goes, I think it was absolutely ridiculous that we had to memorize so many random places and names for quizzes. Lab was fun, but elementary
Get ready for lots of writing. The lectures are crucial to doing well, so definitely show up. The workload outside of class is fairly light. The grading was extremely generous.
Super easy. Just show up. No reading necessary.
Good class - cool subject. As others say, sometimes reads off notes, but not always. Doesn't make his powerpoint available. He knows the field well, and is nice (and approachable). Would take the class again.
He is not very clear with his expectations on assignments and tests, so be sure to clarify things with him before-hand. His lectures are interesting, and he seems to have a good grasp of his subject. Still, his grading standards are pretty rigorous; I didn't miss a single class and thought I had a comprehensive grasp of the material...still no A.
Sometimes the lectures were interesting, but other times they were kind of boring. Class isn't mandatory, but it's the only way you'll get the notes since he doesn't post his PowerPoints. He isn't clear about the assignments or about the tests, but as long as you take notes and study you'll be fine.
Dr. Eerkens isn't a bad guy, his tests are fairly straightforward but teaching methods are wierd. For example he goes through 30 pp slides in an hour and then says, "oh, i've got 30 min!" and makes the class eat another 30 slides. If anything the only thing I can really complain about is the TA. She grades way to subjectivly to be fair.
At first I thought he was a great prof. Then one day a student asked a ? and he said "I'm not going to answer that, your TA has office hrs, any other ?s". A reason may have helped. Anyway, he gets behind in lecture and does fly thru the slideshow. Tests are pretty easy. TA was a really tough grader (Greg). Class got pretty boring (ANT23).
He's super nice, and he cover a lot of material quickly, most of which will be on the test. If you don't do well in this class, or think he is a bad teacher, it's probably you and not him. He shows slides, but the most important part of the lectures tends to be what he says that isn't on the slides so record lectures if possible.
Prof. Eerkins is a great professor, really knows his stuff, and makes the class fun. His lectures are a bit overwhelming (he talks fast, and doesn't necessarily say exactly what's on the ppt). Not a lot of work outside class, but study your butt off for tests! I'm usually an A student, but I got a C on the midterm!
Pretty good Prof. Always answers questions in class. Midterms were too long and difficult for this class and generally require memorization of a lot of random things in addition to a good understanding of major concepts. Overall, lectures are clear and somewhat interesting.
Jelly is a pretty cool guy. His midterms seem lengthy but I finished them early. Just know your stuff well and skip the hard questions for later. He always asks if anyone has any questions and does a really good job answering them. There are quite a bit of things to memorize and the lectures can get really boring.
Class is actually easier than expected. No chemistry knowledge is really necessary, so he spends a good chunk of time going over what should be known before taking Archaeometry. Very interesting applications of sciences to archaeological practices. Homework seem kind of irrelevant. Tests are easy if you go to class and take good notes, no book use
Prof. Eerkens has fairly interesting lectures and answers questions clearly, but his tests are ridiculous. You would have to memorize every detail he ever mentioned to ace them. I am usually an A+ student, but I got Cs and B minuses on his tests (after studying hard!)
Eerkens made prehistoric technology as interesting as it probably can be. Fun lectures, kinda long, but there are 3 hands on learning labs which were super interesting and allowed for a break from the classroom. Would def recommend for any anthro student! You'll learn just how hard it is to make a stone tool!
Great professor, I took his class my first quarter and enjoyed it so much I took another one he was teaching my second. He is engaging and fun to listen too, his office hours are the most helpful I have experienced at Davis.
Pretty easy class if you are use to taking science classes. If you attend lecture every day, you do not need the book. Consisted of midterms and a 2 write ups for mock archaeological projects.
The class is pretty easy. If you show up to lectures and put some effort into the labs (which are kind of actually fun), you will easily pass with a good grade. Make sure to pay extra attention to details, dates, and names.
He was a pretty good professor. Packed lots of information into lectures. It is good to remember smaller details as well as larger concepts, because it will come in handy on tests. The book chapters that were assigned didn't always coincide with the lecture topics, but some things from the book were on the test. The labs were really interesting.
material : interesting and straight forward. One midterm, he gives out a study guide and its pretty helpful but pay attention to detail. Our TA (David. K) was helpful. He also posted lecture outlines but don't rely on that, show up to lecture they're cool. One essay assignment, which was to watch a movie on mummies. Final not to bad, just review.
This is one of my favorite classes here at Davis. The class isn't very rigorous, but lectures slides aren't posted online so you do need to go to class. However the material covered is very interesting and Professor Eerkens is very knowledgeable and is a very engaging lecturer.
I very much liked this class and the lectures were straight forward and interesting. Eerkens spoke clearly and the TA was also very helpful. Projects and quizzes are easy, the midterm and final are more difficult.
Dr. Eerkens is nice and funny. He can be a teensy bit dry at times but his lectures are pretty interesting and he is also very nice. I think it is unfair to rate him off of the grading his TAs did! The TA we had was a TOUGH grader. But that is not his fault... Overall the class was interesting and useful.
The class wasn't that difficult. Got by without working overly hard on the lab assignments or studying that much. I also didn't read the lessons and studied only off my notes and did fine. Professor Eerkens puts together good slides (except for the time he used dark blue on a black BG). Sometimes lecture is a bit dry. Remember names.
Test are all based off lecture, no study guides, and although the exams are cumulative the class begins in reverse chronological order starting with the Inca and then moving on to cultures that predate the Inca.
Dr. Eerkens is an organized & thorough lecturer. Lecture pace is perfectly rehearsed with slides for full note-taking (even by hand), which I suggest you do. He does post lecture outlines, but no slides, so go to class. His study guides are great. A good TA is imperative to paper grading, because 2 papers, midterm, and final are your only grades.
Very lecture heavy, says "um" a lot.
I adore this professor, he is clear when lecturing and the way he handles his class is straight forward. The content is pretty easy as long as you pay attention/read. 1 midterm, 1 final, and a few assignments with discussion which are easy. He is kind to students. Easy class but some find it boring.
Lectures can be pretty darn dry sometimes. He doesn't post the slides online which is somewhat frustrating since it feels like a right to me. The bullet points on his slides are kind of out of order sometimes which is hard when you're listening and jotting down as fast as you can. Despite his flaws, he is chill and he means well.
He's a very nice guy and encourages participation and questions. But he doesn't post the slides online and he moves through slides too quickly so it's hard to take notes well. I ended up with a lot of incomplete notes and missing information, so studying for the tests was really difficult. The tests also tend to be detailed, so you need to study.
Professor Eerkens knows how to make his lectures interesting, even for people who don't take much interest in the subject. However, attendance is crucial because he doesn't post the notes online. Don't waste your money on the textbook, the tests are on the lecture material. You're only graded on the midterm, final, and an (easy A) essay. Have fun!
ANT 26 is a decent GE but it can be boring. Lectures feel like they go on forever. Final is easy as long as you go to lectures & write a study guide.
1 MT, final and 1 paper determines your grade. The tests are based solely on lecture, don't waste money buying the book. Essay is about literally any mummy movie you want to watch, really easy to write. Easy A class, just show up to lecture bc he doesn't post notes. For tests just read over your notes and look at his study guide.
Lectures aren't mandatory, but if you're not the type to do the reading on your own you should attend. Everything on the midterm and final is covered during lecture, so there is no reason to get the book if you show up. Very easy class!
Dr. Eerkens is a great professor; the course content is fascinating. The lectures progress in a logical manner. No lecture recordings or slides provided when I took it, but take notes and study the outlines and you'll get an A. One midterm, a final, and a short paper. Exams have extra credit questions on them :)
He is honestly a great guy and such a great professor. Definitely can see his passion for his job. His lectures are detailed, although they can be very lengthy. Other than that, he made the class durable and fun and I definitely would say I learned a lot in his class in such a short amount of time! Definitely would take again!
5 discussions and 4 papers all of which were really straightforward and easy. The final was the big thing- 40% of grade. Half essay and MC. The MC is mainly on big topics and only from lecture, just understand big topics. There were 5 tiny essays- a paragraph each. Different questions each but the lecture slides have the answers on them and book.
Very nice, easy class. You only have to do 4/5 assignments, none of which are hard. The midterm and final are standard multiple choice and short response. The lectures were usually boring, but archaeology is literally just digging, so not much he can do there. Otherwise this was a very pleasant class and professor!
Dr. Eerkens was a great professor. The class was heavy on lectures but I kinda liked that. There are about 9 assignments throughout the class that are pretty easy. There is one midterm & the final which are structured the same way (MC & short answer) . There's a textbook but you can pass without reading it. A great class if you enjoy archaeology.
Loved Mummies! The prof speaks slowly, which is good so you can write all the info down. Had 1 midterm, final and essay, essay was on mummy media of your choice. Class material was SO interesting, tests were easy, online/open note, essay 750-1600 words. Would recommend if you want a fun class to break up the rest of what you have to do!!!
One of the most adorable professors ever. Literally protect at all costs. But on a real note, keeps things clear, and if you like anthropology, class is a breeze!
Funny Professor who gives great lectures! Easy and interesting work/stories about mummies!! I really loved this class. Open notes/book exam x2, and a class paper on any media mummy you like. Great 2 unit class that’s fun and easy!
Dr E is such a funny and caring prof. He lectures with awareness of the class and gives time to take good notes in class bc he doesn't post lecture slides, but exams are open note. Content is organized well and he definitely cares about what he teaches, so lectures are always interesting. Clear expectations for students.
He is the WORST teacher EVER!!! Don't take class with him. He is very unreasonable and his lecture is hella boring. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!
Take Professor Eerkens if you get the chance! Runs his class super fairly and TAs are amazing as well. Our grade was based on labs (easy, 40% of your grade + lowest score is dropped), midterm (30%), and final (30%). All lectures were recorded + his powerpoints were clear and organized. A lot of info on tests, but if you study you can do well.
Dr. E is great! I took two of his classes in the same quarter (ANT 003 & ANT 182). His lectures are pretty good & are often entertaining, especially in 003, but in 182, they would often start to drag after a while. Thankfully, he often ended class early. Showing up to lectures and taking notes is very important for being able to do well on exams.
Meh. Lectures are boring, dont need to show up to class. Assignments are a joke - just go to discussion and spend an hour writing and youll get a perfect score. Everything for his class is on the canvas. Textbook is there but no required reading. Only 2 tests and they are based on information he gives you in lecture. Easy ge but it will bore you.
Very nice professor. Very interesting discussion section activities and assignments. Exams are based on what he teaches in lectures so attend/watch lectures and make notes and you should pass easily. Will have to study a bit to get an A since majority of grade is based on exams, but hardest part is remembering all the vocab words.
Great professor! I loved ANT 26. I found his lectures to be very interesting. Dr E was very knowledgable and honestly quite humorous too. You're only graded on a midterm, a final, and a paper. Midterm and final were mc and short answer, but really easy and similar to the study guide.
Too much for 2 credit course. Weekly readings are long and assignment guidelines are not clear. Tests are not open-note or open book and they are a mix of short essay questions, fill in the blank and mcqs.
Not worth for a 2 unit GE. Graded on Essay + Test (closed), way too much information in lectures. Don't be surprised if you get a B in this class. A is definitely achievable, but for 2 units, this is not worth it.
Such a fun and engaging class. Lectures were well organized. Paper was really easy and the TA's were nice. Make sure to take good notes and you'll do just fine on the midterm and final.
Very interesting GE and I found the topic cool. However, for a 2 unit GE, this class requires way too much work and your grade is dependent on only papers and tests, which are cumulative and closed-book. Way too much information to process for a 2 unit GE. Professor is great though.
This class was super interesting and Dr. E is a great lecturer. I took this class P/NP as a GE, and I recommend doing this if you can because there is too much work & difficult tests for a 2-unit class. The exams had fill-in-the-blank/essay questions that were sometimes difficult to recall and graded harshly. Overall glad I took it though!
this is not an easy 2 unit course. it was a lot more work than any of my other courses. Exams were closed note and cumulative and there was A LOT of info to remember. Also, these exams are 70% of your grade.
I've always been interested in forensics and the study of the body after death so I was really excited about this course. While you definitely get to learn a lot, the tests are also unnecessary detailed. For a two unit class, the TAs grade way
-Test were unnecessarily detailed -TAs were super picky about grading and often went off the rubric to dock points -not an easy class at all, 2 units but feels like 4 -felt more stressed about this 2 unit class than my core classes (chem and math) -overall, I don't recommend if you're looking for an easy class
Easy class. I took this class for GE requirement. Textbook was kind of useless, majority of the things that are on the midterm and final are in the lecture so I'd personally go to the lecture and take notes. He's a good professor who's good at his job. Attendance wasn't mandatory but I'd highly recommend going if you don't want to read the textbook
Great professor with amazing lectures. Tests align with lectures so try not to miss many.
Easy GE class, but be prepared to study for the tests if you want to pass. Assignments take time to finish. The textbook is not needed at all as long as you go to lecture. Dr. Eerkens definitely knows what he lectures on, but the lectures were kind of boring overall.
Profesor Eerkens is obviously very passionate about what he teaches and I highly recommend him. The class is extremely test heavy but for the most part the content is interesting. You're graded by a midterm, final and 2 papers. A tip is to just be very detailed with your answers and attend lecture.
The class/grade consisted of 2 parts of an essay, a midterm, and final. Closed note on-paper exams, so lots of memorization. Material is interesting though! The class at times seems unorganized as he doesn't explain things too well. Dr. E is passionate in what he teaches but sometimes goes too fast in lecture. Recordings posted on canvas. Good GE!
Interesting class, chill professor. For 2 units, wayyyy too much information to work on. Grade is dependent on final and essay only. TA grade your tests/essays, but it's extremely subjective and some may dock more points than others. Some were pretty strict. Nonetheless, it should still be an easy A-.
I loved this course! The lectures were a lot of fun and everything we learned about was very interesting. The two exams did require a bit of memorization but the study guides given were very helpful. The one paper we had to do was very fun to write because you could choose any piece of media to write about. Very good GE class!
Great professor, very cool and interesting topic. For 2 units, this was extremely memorization heavy and found myself studying for this class more than my other 3-4 unit classes. I barely clutched with an A.
Dr. Erekens is an amazing professor. If you ever get a chance to take his mummies class, do. His lectures were enjoyable and the topics covered were interesting. We wrote one essay (two parts) and took a midterm and a final. His tests were easy. You would have to try hard not to get a good grade in this class.
The midterm and final were just content from lecture so attend and you won't need to study much. Office hours are a good opportunity to learn more and the TAs are happy to help. The paper wasn't difficult but put in the effort because the final grade consists of few things. Weekly readings were helpful but not needed for course comprehension.
Eerkens' class was well laid out but seemed a bit dry. Lecture heavy, but wouldn't post the notes to the lectures until every Friday? Easy class overall but not necessarily the most thought provoking. Cool subject matter, definitely recommend for that.
He records his lectures and there is assigned reading per week, but I never read any of the reading and passed his class. Grades are based on 2 papers, one revised and one draft, one midterm, and one final. As long as you study the study guides it's really easy to pass his class. Though some people have TAs that grade their paper more harshly.
TA responsible for assignments and study guides, deal with her constantly. no LECTURE, no RECORDING, no ANSWER KEY. Problem set was a large textual description that is not clear. Suggest they provide a good example attached to the web. Just answer probably because you're a visualizer, if you have questions come to my office.
Four papers which are about every two weeks and a midterm and final that makes or breaks your grade. Study guides not clear and small details are important for the test. The papers were not graded harshly and not difficult. Only used the textbook for the last one and lectures are recorded. Unless you love plants, the lectures are a kinda boring.
Professor Eerkens lectures fairly well. The lectures aren't mandatory and can be a bit boring, but you can watch the recorded lectures on 1.5x speed or higher if you don't want to go to class or as review before the exams. This class is heavily based on memorization, so it will require some effort for the exams (they are easy if you study).
Only 4 writings as assignments but lectures are extremely heavy. Classes are recorded but no powerpoints provided. Expected to be test on every single details mentioned in class. No discussion, the time would be lecture as well. He is rich in knowledge but don't sign up this for GE course if you are not really interested in archaeology.
Eerkens' class is straightforward but can feel dry at times. Though the lectures are heavy, the study guides and office hours make it easy to do well. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep!
Amazing professor. Super nice and sweet. Lecture somethings kind of boring but TA and prof themselves super helpful and reachable! Lecture is recorded. 4 papers, nice grading. Last paper is based on the textbook info, but not difficult. One midterm, one final, were the test questions similar to those in study guide!
Great prof! I love him in a Lana Del Ray older type way ifykyk!! Anyways class is chill, just study for the exams like a week before, focus on the study guide and write a good paper! ;)
interesting lectures. only the midterm/final and a writing assignment are graded
i really liked this class; he presented the information in a way that is very interesting! lectures are not recorded though and the only things that go in the gradebook are midterm, final, and writing assignment. need to memorize information to do well on tests! overall, good GE to take :)
he teaches this TWO UNIT class like a FOUR UNIT class insane, thought I signed up for a fun lil ge but no im behind on a month of lectures yet my google doc notes have 34 PAGES!!! too much for 2 unit class do not take if you are a soulless upper division stem major like me who wanted a ge vacation so to speak but was meet with a tremendous behemoth
Good guy and you can tell he cares about this subject a lot, my only complaint is that the grade is based off to few things. His grading is off a midterm, final, and final paper which only leaves you so much room to actually work with and (not him) but his TA's are hard graders for the FRQ on the midterm. Just study day before and you will be fine.
Prof is a great lecturer and ANT 026 very interesting class. There's no need to do work outside of class if you attend lectures (except 1 writing project). Lectures are recorded, but I imagine it's easy to procrastinate this class. Take notes, and you'll be fine. Would recommend as a fun GE.
Professor Eerkens gave excellent lectures. I found this class relatively easy. The lectures are all recorded! I only went to class maybe 6 times! The midterm & final included a mix of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, & short-answer questions. It's not difficult to get an A in this class as long as you do the readings & review all the lectures.
