Jen is a nice and open minded person. Her class is a relaxed atmosphere
she's a great teacher. Very cool about things. I def. recommend her!
I think she expects to much from her students in partcipation. I struggled with that for awhile. I don't care what my peers think. I guess I shouldn't have taken a Sociology class. - If you don't mind group work and your peers - she is great!
really good teacher, very flexible, recommended to everybody for GE class, but dont expect a total cruise by, you will have to read and do group work.
great teacher! she's engaged in her work, and gets the students engaged as well. she truly cares about her students, but don't expect to sit back and relax in the class. you have to do the work, but it's worth it!
She is a good teacher, very into her lectures and fun to listen to
Amazing teacher. Jen has a great teaching style that will keep you engaged and interested. Any of her classes are great choices.
Jen rocks! She is hella funny and very real with every student the only thing that is kind of annoying is the reading journals she had you do for almost every reading, but the good things of her teaching style out way that one bad thing! A+ to Jen!
Best teacher ever had. Very fun class, a must take teacher.
she is VERY easy. she doesnt care about attendance. I only showed up for class every thurs for 10 mins to turn in hw. (although i stopped doing hw last half of the quarter) and on days of midterms and final and passed the class with a B+! VERY EASY CLASS!

she makes class very interesting. There is a lot of reading (which is interesting!) and an average amount of hw. she takes her subjects seriously and delivers them exceptionally well. GO JEN!
the class i took was taught with jen and sal. awesome class. you will NEVER be bored. but you have to put into just as much effort as jen and sal do. do your readings, take notes and study for the tests. youll be fine. youd have to be a real bum to not be
The best teacher ever! She not only makes class interesting, but she makes you think about things too (in a fun way) I've never had a better teacher!
Very enthusiastic, very helpful; so long as you keep up with the reading journals and assignments, you'll get an A
i took her womens studies 1 class and it was amazing. now soc 28 with sal is just as fun but a little more difficult. worth taking!!!
I love her and this class!!! She is just soo nice sweet and funny. She keeps the subjects very interesting. She is very passionate about her teaching and is always willing to help out. This class is sooooooooooo gooood...Show the love!!!
Expects way to much from the students for the amount of learning she returns. She expects you to constantly jump through hoops for her. Class should be renamed "Social injustice in the united states". Not objectives and the conclusions she reaches are biased.
Assigns too much reading - almost everynight and requires a report on it the next class. Does not talk about Sociology, but some kind of imagined social injustice. Biased and only tells one side of the story. Condescending and unrealistic in her expectations. Manipulates the class. Stay away.
How anyone could say anything bad about Jen is beyond me. She is truly the best teacher in every way. She is personable, fun, and expects you to learn...what a crime. I felt like she was my friend.
What does sexual orientation have to do with whether a teacher is good or not, you asinine homophobe (10/26/04 commenter)? Jen is an awesome teacher and her class is very interesting. The workload is light and easy (with the exception of the paper, but she offers help) and quizzes are open-note.
She's very dedicated and very into her work. She's not boring at all.
A great teacher, full of excitement, and is always upbeat. You will like this class except for the paper. The final is somewhat difficult, but will be easy if you prepare.
JEN'S GREAT!!! Very helpful and enthusiastic. Shes also funny.
She is one of THE best teachers at De Anza. She wants you to do well. The reading and cards are no sweat. You get 3 freebies. SHE'S AWESOME!!
passionate about sociology. Wants to broaden students horizons. Rational, and intellegent, she displays the material in a fun and interesting way. definitly take her. The paper is a lot of work though.
the readings EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. and journal EVERY SINGLE night get really annoying, easy to fall behind readings. harder than i expected. 6 page family history paper drove me crazy!! true... she does talk a bit too much about injustice. bias.
This is such a great class...it really opens up your eyes about how things work in our society. She's always willing to help her students. You do have to do a reading journal every night....but they're not hard at all. The thing that will kill you is the family history paper.
Jen is a really nice and caring person. She is very passionate about her teaching. Her daily reading journals were easy but it does get annoying sometimes. I can't say this is an easy class, but if you put in enough effort you will get an A
She is a nice young teacher full of energy and optimism who really in love with his subject which is a rare thing today. To pass her class is not difficult: do journals every day(which could be boring), come to the class, bring family paper in time. Quizes not difficult(on readings!), just boring.
the paper took forever!!!! i got a B- and it brought my entire grade down like 6%...
annoying class, always talking about INJUSTICE, when there is more to sociology than just the negative aspects. PAPER TAKES FOREVER... SUCH A PAIN.
Jen was so awesome and nice! The paper topic does need to be changed, and she kind of requires tedious things of the class. Overall, an enlightening experience.
tests/quizes are no sweat.you get and entire sheet of notes(if u write small enough u can get all the lecturer notes on there, which is were its all from). The fam.history paper is a good amount of work, but considering on how easy tests are, its really not a big deal. Her teaching is worth it!sherocks
A very passionate teacher, she really loves what she's doing, BUT, it's a hard class with tons of reading material each week. If you like a lot of work and just work your butt of to get that A, then this is the class for you.
Jen was such an awesome teacher!! i really enjoyed her class and she really cares about her teaching and her students. you will always smile in that class and if u work hard and read the book, you'll pass the class with flying colors! highly recommended.
jen is a great teacher! she is passionate about topic and allows you to share your thoughts instead of making them for you. heavy workload with lots of reading but totally worth it.
I love her. She's VERY enthusiastic, fun, and she's always ready for your questions. Her assignments are based on readings, and it's not too bad. There is a lot of group work involved and group presentations. Lots of fun!
very ambitious, attentive, and engertic, highly recommend her. She's straightforward, has a nice sense of humor, will try to make Sociology more fun, intresting, and less dry. respect her and others in the class and likewise.
GREAT INSTRUCTOR!! Take her class. It's a fun class!!
Jen was one of the BEST teachers that I have ever had! She is really dedicated to her work, and focuses on her students and has the ability to get your attention and make you adapt well into her Classroom! Great Class and Wonderful Teacher! Highly Recommended!
Great class to take if you're open to learning about new ideas. I took a lot out of this class and I am so glad that Jen was my teacher. She is very passionate and makes learning fun. Make sure that when you take this class you are ready for plenty of reading assignments; however, the readings are VERY interesting. Loved the class!!

Jen is great! She's fun and dedicated to her work. She makes you feel comfortable in class and makes Soc. interesting. She's "hip" to her students. Fun class. I recommend taking her.
Jen is awesome! her class is so interesting. i had it 9:30 in the morning and it was a great start to my day. take this class and you will learn so much about the world. Just show up for class, take time to do the work, and you can get an A. Definitely Recomend
Teacher is very cool, and knows her stuff. Easy class if you take notes and do the work.
Good things: Great young teacher. Has modern style of teaching which i love. very cool. she makes the class really interesting and time flies. Bad things: reading reading reading. much reading is done every single night /w journals that need to be done with every reading. Other than that the class is a breeze. i recommend this class
She is a great teacher she is interesting cool, but she is hard on grading you could voice your own opinion on paper, she will mark u down. :(
I like Jen's teaching style because she tries to make it easy for you with a teaching style thats a bit more modern and not so out-of-the-textbook type reading. She grades pretty rough and there is a lot of reading and some projects to do though. I would recommend the class if you are interested
Very cool teacher fun not so traditional, umm her grading is pretty easy does not grade hard but totally fun and cool
jen is by far one of the best teachers at De Anza. A lot of work like reading journal every night & a lot of projects but you learn so much in her class. She is so passionate about the subjects she teaches that she draws you in on wanting to learn more. If you haven't taken her yet, do so. HIGHLY recommended.
Take this class if you want your whole world view to rotate 180 degrees. Jen is a fun teacher. She uses slides, videos and other visuals to teach. Lets you bring notes to tests so take good notes. Not too hard, take her hints on the papers. A LOT of reading, be prepared to be busy doing that. Not recommended with more than another 2 classes.
This class is easy but its a lot of busy work. Its an easy, but the projects are tedious. The tests are mostly based on the readings and lectures. I thought this class would be a good class, but now that im taking it, almost done with the quarter, i wouldnt recommend it. Shes a good teacher, its just a ridiculous amount of work.
She is a totally awesome teacher who loves the subject. She will totally change the way you view the U.S. class system. Tests only worth 5% of grade and based almost entirely on readings. Major portion of grade is based on two projects. Absolutely do not slack on HW or do a half-assed job on these projects because she's a very fair grader.
she's a very cool teacher and she knows what she is talking about. The class requires hella reading, and if you do the reading you'll do really well, and just do the note cards too. she's a really cool teacher.
Jen is a good teacher. very energetic all the time. the projects are a lot of busy work though. that would be my only complaint.
JEN IS THE BEST! ALWAYS SO ENERGETIC! VERY FUNNY! HER PROJECTS REQUIRE SOME TIME.. BUT IF U DEDICATE TIME TO THEM YOU'LL PASS AND SOME ARE INTERESTING. JOURNALS EVERYDAY THAT MAY BE MY COMPLAINT. ALL IN ALL TAKE HER! SHES GREAT!
This absolutely hands down is the best teacher at de anza college. I don't know why people think she's hard though. The journals in the beginning are like 20 pages to read but most of the time they are only like 5 pages each. Tests are very basic and can be gotten from your one page of notes or journals. Work is easy.
i am not a dumb student and i study hard for my classes but her classes are just TOO much EASY work that you never need in your entire life. She doesnt care about attendance but if youre late u better dont go to the class. The book is just boring but she tries to make it interesting by making some jokes about it , but .....NOT
This class was a joke! soo boring! not an easY A u get verY lazY! this class was a WASTE of time! shoot me! read book and BS "notecards"
Jenn as a person is pretty cool, I admire the fact that she is opinionated and doesn't dress trendy. SOME readings are interesting, but its a pain to do the reading journals everynight. Group project is hard, exams..you really know you're material BUT, stay away from this class because you end up writing like 10 papers that lower your grade
Very good teacher, assigns nightly reading assignments so you better show up - the tests alone are not enough to pass! She really loves and knows the subject and is always available to help. Highly recommended!
Jen is great!!! She makes class interesting and is really fun. Reading journal assignments are every night, but journals can be used on tests. Projects require time, but take good notes and you'll do fine. 3 projects, 3 tests, videos, group work, and lecture.
A lot of work but the daily journals are for completeness and the project and essays are designed well to integrate what she's lectured. She's really fun and makes sociology seem more than another class to check off the requirements list.
Charismatic, sooo Intelligent, Funny!, Nice, Helpful, wonderful human being. Class is a lot of reading, but interesting content and in small doses (i am a slow reader and i kept up fine). Easy , respectively exams. Fun papers. overall, great experience - the class itself creates an interesting bond/community with other classmates DO TAKE!
This professor is wonderful- intelligent, humble, and wise. The class has been life changing, and informative and worth every reading journal and time you put into it. She is incredibly helpful and goes out of her way to help you. She has an infectious smile that lights you up inside and the uncanny ability to motivate you. Take this class if you
She is a wonderful instructor!! gives great examples to make you understand exactly whats shes teaching, and makes class really fun to be in! and as a plus, shes funny!
Jen is super cool. She is very dedicated to teaching, and does so in unconventional and interesting ways. There is a lot of work in this class, but it is not boring. She even reads drafts of essays! I've never had a teacher do that. I recommend this class to everyone I meet. She also really cares about students.
Very good teacher! She really knows her stuff. Very engaging and an easy A if you complete all of your work. Just do the work and you'll receive full credit. There is a reading assignment each night, but not too much. If you are a nursing student, I highly recommend Soc 1 instead of Anthro 2! Myhre is awesome!
HEY! HEY! HEY! Great Instructor. Don't know why everyone says she's hard. You only have to read like 5 pages at most and you get to use notes on your exam!
She's the best she's passionate about the subject and she's so funny very interesting class!
Great class, outstanding teacher. The best teacher I've had thus far. The material isn't the easiest, but Jen teaches it in a very accessible way. Be ready to do daily readings and reading journals. Only for those open-minded.
Great instructor! Be prepared to really WORK. There is reading (hw) daily but it helps for the next day's material and you can use the notes for midterm&final. Jen is really into what she teaches and it creates an awesome learning environment. There are two projects (essays) and exams. They are challenging but she is always helpful for questions.
I LOVE JEN SO MUCH!! And believe me, I hate it when teachers have favorites, but she seriously cares for each of her students so much. SHE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT SHE'S TEACHING, IN AND OUT. Don't try to slack off, because her class is NOT there for you to take it as a joke. Reading is really interesting, so are lectures. She is so funny and exciting!!!
HEY HEY HEY!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! EASY, FUN AND INTERESTING. U HAVE TO DO THE READING BUT DNT WORRY THE READINGS R VERY INTERESTING! LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT OPPT. SHE IS THERE TO HELP, VERY FUNNY AND WE WATCH ALOT OF FILMS ONLY ONE TEST AND FINAL. EASY A FOR SURE!!
Jen is such a great teacher. She genuinely cares about all her students, no matter what. Don't get behind in papers and you will do fine. I took a lot more out of this class than anything else from the year.
I know everyone has their own experiences with teachers but I feel like I should share mine with this teacher. Nice teacher, however, it just seemed like she gives tons of reading of which only a few are interesting and easy to digest, and she grades hard on essays. Overall good but essays are way hard
HEY HEY HEY!! Jen is truly a very very good teacher. SHe is passionate and fun! her classes are never boring. I did enjoy her classes and her discussion. HOWEVER...the workload of this class isnt a joke. the materials she used is fine but the reading journals are just a pain. if you are lazy avoid her class. If you are interested in soc, take it!
She's an amazing instructor!
DR. J!! Dr. Jenn is PHENOMENAL!! As one of her FYE students, I HELLA look up to her simply cuz of the fact that she's INTELLIGENT, FUNNY, and PASSIONATE! I left her class feeling EMPOWERED to intiate change in this cold world! One theme that I will never forget about her class is a song that we sang: there's POWER IN ONE!! (YOU ROCK, Jenn!!)
not the easiest class in the world but still easy to get an A..she does her job to the fullest pay this woman to the fullest!! i know i said its not the easiest class but TRUST me take her class..simply excellent yo who needs drugs when you have jen!!
She is nice but strict about doing work. Grades like a normal college teacher. I'm glad she doesn't grade easy nor hard. Just do your reading journals!
Jen is amazing at what she teaches. You can tell that she is very passionate about what she teaches. I actually enjoyed taking another class by her. She uses the textbook alot only for reading journals and some inclass activities but her class was fun. I highly recommend her to anyone. Dont be afraid to ask her questions cuz shes really nice!!!
One of my favorite professors at De Anza. She is truly passionate, and her class is so fun and informative. Really sparked my interest in sociology and gender issues. She is really nice and helpful as well.
She's a very interesting professor, but she could be quite tough! There are a heavy load of work on a daily basis. If you're not determined to do all the assignments, then I would not recommend you taking her. But overall, she's very dedicated in teaching all her students. I got an A in the class =D
Jen is one of the best instructors I've had. She is passionate, skilled in her field, and can keep the class engaged. After taking her class, I discovered that my passion is within sociology, and so I am now a sociology major. The class is loaded with homework, one essay, and a finial- nonetheless is an easy A. Take Jen, shes awesome!
She is an amazing teacher, whom is passionate about what she teaches, and is always willing to help! She is hardworking, therefore so should you!!
okay here's the deal. she's great and everything. Very passionate and teaches very well. BUT it is a 4 unit class for heavens sake! this class is just TOO much work for those 4 damn units. HUGE ass projects, which take days to complete and everyday reading WITH notecards. LIke really? we have no other subjects and totally nothing else to do right?
Probably the best teacher i had at De Anza so far. There is a lot of reading but its not hard, all you have to do is keep up. She teaches so that you are interested, and if you have prior knowledge of what the class is about you'll definitely get an A.
Great teacher: very passionate, readily helpful, energetic, and easy-fair grading. Reading assignments every day with notes, two projects (one visual, one research paper), zero quizzes/tests/midterms, and one final - with weighted grading. Get the book, do the readings, take notes in class, do the work, and you'll do just fine.
Jen is absolutely amazing! Like others have said, she is passionate and helpful. However she does give a lot of work but you learn so much! Just turn in everything on time and reach out for help. You will learn interesting facts and will cherish them forever! Thanks Jen for everything. You are awesome!
I loved Jen's class even though the papers were kind of challenging. If you read and pay attention in class (which you should do in all your classes) you will pass her final very easily. I think sometimes she boosts your grade, because after reading all her comments on my papers I realized how i poor I did on them. But she is great! Take her!:)
I was taking this course for the general education requirement, and ended up helplessly in love with the subject. She's incredibly passionate about sociology, and you end up the same way. Reading EVERY night, homework, lots of effort put into this class to get an A. Totally worth it.
I enjoyed Jen's class! Very descriptive when it comes to feedback on paper, which was really helpful. She loves what she does, teaching sociology. I learned so much in her class that I plan on carrying on.
If you are into energetic professors then this is the one for you. There are only group work with partners at random that happen in this class. Along with that there is homework every night which are almost always readings out of the books required or post for social media. You will have to make a new Twitter/ Instagram account just for sociology.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Class grade mainly consists of project, but not hard to do. She really cares about sociology and making a change. Amazing lectures and has extra credit opportunities. Anyone planning to take SOC1 or even learning about making a change should really take her class.
I took her class 10 years ago and it is one of the most memorable classes I've ever taken.
She is such a great teacher ! I loved taking her this quarter! You must take her ! Homework is really easy so its really on you if you decide to do it or not ... But I would suggest everyone to take Jen :)
I wish I could take her for all of my classes haha. She is the most conscientious and caring professor that I have ever taken at De Anza. I was skeptical at first but now I know Im lucky to take her. You have readings everyday to take note. That is the only difficult task of the course. Other projects are just easy money. Easy grading. Respectable
It's my first quarter here & I am truly super thankful to take her class. She is not only super passionate about sociology, she is extremely caring, supportive. I was worried abt not getting an A & told her abt it. she left me a note that really encouraged me. THERE ARE A LOT OF READINGS, so be ready. but overall, SHE IS GREAT. highly recommend.
Jen is my favorite professor I have had at De Anza. Her assignments are fun and require you to utilize your creative side. She is very educated on her subject matter and is actually active in ending social inequalities. Overall great class, and wish she taught another sociology class so I could learn from her again.
She's really passionate about what she teaches and SO ORGANIZED so it will be easy to get an A if you put the work it. It is quite a good amount of work though.
she's very kind and engaging. easy class as long as you show up most of the time, do the readings/hw, and get good grades on projects and the final. extra credit available, but not needed. only caveat is it's all about economic inequality so if you're not interested in that, don't take her.
Jen is super passionate and caring. Daily hw takes about 20min and is clearly laid out in the schedule. The main project takes up a huge portion of your grade. Get ready to do an activity that involves getting out in the community. Class covers the income inequality in the United States. Jen is fun and one of a kind.
Jen is such a caring and amazing Professor! She brings so much positivity into the classroom. It was always exciting to go and learn from her. Theres a lot of reading but its interesting and definitely a lot to learn from. I totally recommend to take her, dont even hesitate!! She even offers to give you the books required for her class.
Absolutely LOVED Jen! She is such a great professor! She makes things easy and fun to understand. If you are debating whether or not to take her, I would highly recommend that you do. Only thing, she assigns a lot of reading in her class, so be prepared.
Jen is a super fun professor to take, she's so passionate about Sociology that it made learning about it that much more fun! She's super understanding, and isn't such a harsh grader and as long as you take notes on the reading you'll be fine. Highly recommend this class if you're going to take Soc!
Very passionate about sociology and wants you to learn! There is a lot of reading required but she does accept late work but will deduct points. If you're on top of your homework and don't slack off, you'll be fine! But be careful because assignments can easily sneak up behind you since there is one due every day. Overall a great teacher!
Jen is freaking amazing! You learn so much from her class and she cares for her students. It's an easy A as long as you do all your work, and she's a badass professor. I really recommend to take her, and she's genuinely a very nice, honest person.
Overall it was a good class with a fair amount of work. The hardest part for me was the required 4 hours of volunteer work (felt strange due to it being an online class). You will end up making a visual presentation with audio as your final project. No midterms just one final, weekly notes & discussion posts/responses.
Good teacher, easy class, VERY LIBERAL. Classes were decently interesting and homework was relatively simple. Mostly have to summarize a reading into a notecard, the hard part is determining what Jen deems to be important in the reading. final was hella easy with all the notes, just organize them well chronologically.
Be prepared to engage and participate in this class. She will have you work in small groups and write up on the board. She cares, wants you to learn and succeed. There are multiple readings each week, but her syllabus is so well organized that you can plan ahead. If you put in the work, you'll get a a lot out of this class.
She is really quirky and down to earth and makes it easy for people to access resources even beyond her class. She made the class fun but if you can't stand a lot of reading then this class might not be for you.
Jen is awesome! However, get ready to work! Her class requires lots of effort, but it's worth it. You will learn a lot about conducting research. Especially for Soc majors who are interested in doing research in the future!
I found Jen to be interesting at first. Her hey hey hey! Email was inviting and the class seemed awesome. Over time I realized how fake and passive aggressive she was. Her projects require work outside of the class which can be fine, but they are an inconvenience. Yes she has good ratings on here, but im sure thats all she cares about.
Inconvenient assignments and projects that you had to go out of your way to complete. Not the same professor I met the first couple of weeks.
Best teacher and best class at DeAnza! Engaging and interesting materials. She is very responsive and cares that we learn. It was an online class but thanks to her recorded lectures and weekly meetings I did not miss being in a physical class.
Condescending and rude. Pretends to be "woke" but in reality is tone-deaf to the concerns of her students of color. The workload is extreme, her feedback is vague and unhelpful, and she will fail you if you don't do things exactly the way she wants. The class content is irrelevant and boring, which is a shame for a topic that's so important.
I took this Professor because I liked a previous sociology class I took. However, I didnt appreciate this class as much because I tried in this class and still got a B. Its not necessarily that the class is difficult, its that her grading criteria are off than other classes Ive taken. Grades aside, I honestly couldnt vibe with this Professor.
Her online classes are extremely overwhelming. I felt like I was drowning all quarter. Don't take this class if you are suffering from zoom fatigue or any ailments for that matter. You will fall so behind and literally dread going to this class.
Teacher is clear on what she expects from you. 5-6 assignments weekly, not TOO bad but is tiring as majority of the hw is for 2 different books w/required written notes to be submitted, discussions, recorded lectures & multiple 30-40min videos both w/quizzes at the end. Mentally exhausting if working full time & taking other classes but doable...
Shes so rude and fake. Dont take her class, she gives a lot of homework for no reason. If youre not reaching for her expectations, youll fail. I regret taking her class
This class was not worth it to take. I highly regret it, and I wish I didnt take this class at all. So much unnecessary work for nothing! It made me super stressed and anxious. Literally 5-7 hw assignments every week like what! Please be more considerate Jen, most of your students have other responsibility rather than doing socio xxx
She definitely gives out an insane amount of homeworks but at the same time I learned the most from her course. I saw very recent podcasts from few weeks ago appearing in assignments. The final assignment was inspiring in which you must attend one government meeting virtually. Recommend her if you want to expand your sociological vision.
This class is very very very work heavy you have no time to slack off. However, I do wanna say I actually learned stuff. You will have weekly quizzes, weekly readings, weekly discussions, letters to Jen and the absolute favorite hand written notes on readings :) long videos and lectures as well and podcast The final is super easy no midterms
This class is EXTREMELY heavy on workload. 5-7 assignments per week and each of them require lots of reading and long videos. Its VERY time consuming. good thing is that you learn a lot from all of the material she requires you to do, and the final is not a test. but its very draining.
This class is heavy workload so I do not recommend taking this class if you are taking other classes or if you have other things you have to do. This class will not let you rest and there are a lot of discussions, it's like every other day with quizzes as well. You will be reading two books at the same time throughout this quarter.
