Jen has a great personality and excellent teaching methods. She's young enough where you can joke with her, but smart enough to garner the respect of most of the class. She's vivacious, bright and deeply cares about her student's progress.
She has a great personality, and cool stories which make anatomy labs more fun. Her quizzes were fair, and she was always helpful. Ask her about naked bums in the desert!
A great teacher. Knows how to keep students attention and definately knows her stuff. I wish she could have taught more without being held back. She made class fun to go to and topics easier to learn. She cares about her students and seems like an amazing person. good luck to you jen!
Very organize professor, enthusiasm in the class, explain materials throughly and put effort into her teaching. Has her own skeleton outlines which her exams are based on. Just study from her outlines and do her study guides, there is no way not to get an A. She also holds study session and adds more office hours, all the help one can get.
Dr. Utz is a fabulous professor. She is very interested in her students' success in her classes. The material she teaches in lecture comes straight out of the book. Tests were fairly easy if you put in the time to study and see her during office hours for help.
Jen is extremely helpful and very clear on what you need to know for lab. Her questions can be tricky sometimes, but she is always there to help and give further explanation during lab.
AMAZING. Detailed, insightful, helpful, patient, funny, makes her class interesting, and her tests are 100% fair. Grades quickly. Gives lots of study tips. Actually answers questions helpfully! Posts reviews and practice questions that are VERY helpful. Take the time to study and you'll do great!
THE BEST COLLEGE PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. Not even one of those teachers who are just cool because they are super chill and easy to pass the class, but an actual, genuinely great teacher who even if I were failing I would never be able to blame her as a teacher. THAT is how good she is. She is what this world needs to educate human beings.
Her exams are straightforward and she uses powerpoints, but doesn't read straight off it. She actually explains and connects concepts to help you better understand the material. Overall, I find her a very good professor. Not hard, but reasonable. I would definitely recommend her and I wish she were teaching BIOL 224!
This teacher is CRAZYYYY!!!!!! she is not helpful at all..I emailed her asked her for help and she responded with a smart ass remark and sent me the rules and regulations also.....She tricks you on her 10 min 10 question quiz. When you take a test she gives you a seat assignement and then you have to sign the test that you wont cheat! DONT TAKE HER
Dr. Utz is hard and challenging but straight forward. All of her questions on the exams come straight from her powerpoints. She has blueprits and study guides for each chapter that are very helpful. Good teacher overall!
Dr. Utz was the most straightforward professor I've ever had. She provides excellent outlines each lecture really well, so it was easy to follow along. The textbook was really helpful since she taught straight from the book. There is a lot of material to keep up with, but she is very clear on what she expects you to learn.
She is really straight forward and teaches straight from the book. Any questions you have she will help explain until you get it. I suggest studying and actually going over the material outside of class too, but what she talks/teaches is on the test.
She's pretty straight forward. Reads right off her powerpoints but also adds a bit more detail. Sometimes her powerpoints get extremely long but its important material. Pretty strict when it comes to tests/quizzes. Makes assigned seats and you need to show your ID when turning in tests. 10min quizzes for 10questions :( No extra credit.
This class is difficult if you do not study. As everyone else says she is straight forward and bases her powerpoints off of the textbook and they correlate with the lab. No extra credit but if you do well on the exam, that grade replaces a bad grade of an previous lecture exams.
This class is difficult with TONS of information. However, Dr. Utz is very helpful and knowledgeable when you need it. STUDY HARD and when you're tired and think you've studied enough YOU HAVE NOT. Read/study the powerpoints. There are exam blueprints to help you succeed, and will even use the final exam score in place of another exam if needed.
Wish she could have given us her powerpoint notes.
Ms Utz basically takes pictures from the book, talks about really fast, and moves on. She never answered any questions in class when students had them. For a gen-bio course, she goes very in depth in certain subject near the end of the year. It's easy to get a B or C.A better option than other professors, but still not a great one IMO.
Professor Utz for 223 was pretty easy for me, she is really organized and if you read the book, like you're supposed to, she pretty much goes along with it, paragraph by paragraph. I studied a lot and recieved A's on her tests, which were straight forward. If you're looking to pass, take her, read the book, and do your own notes alongside hers.
Really great professor! She goes very fast but she's thorough and emphasizes important parts. Go to class, take your own notes, do well on the online quizzes and you'll do well in lecture! Her tests aren't that hard but the lab is what kills you. REALLY HARD. Start studying early for the lab quizzes and practicals! It will tank your grade otherwise
She speaks extremely fast sometimes, hr ests are fair.
Gets so enthusiastic she forgets her students are undergrads! Too much detail and specifics!! She's SO NICE (very helpful during office hours) but her tests take too much unnecessary study time. Not enough time on weekly quizzes. Doesn't answer questions in class. Speaks fast. If you take her, do so with other easy classes and time on your hands.
Dr. Utz is amazing! You will have to work hard, take notes, study, and read the book, but you will learn so much! I had her for 189 & 223 and got A's in both. If you work hard and take her class seriously, you will get a fair grade. She's not only a great professor, she's also a great and very understanding person. :)
Her tests are difficult because they're very technical. She helps you as much as possible though. Lectures are her talking the entire time - she does not take questions during class so office hours always have a line by her door. Try to take her 196 with easier class, but I hear she's better for anatomy.
Dr. Utz is a great biology teacher. Her approach is straightforward and concise so you know what to expect. She tries to give you as many tools as possible to succeed and her tests are fair coming directly for the book. Time management between lecture and lab is what kills.
Great for general biology and anatomy, but find a different professor for any microbio because she is WAY too technical on it! She gets enthusiastic and lectures in too much detail. Tests are very technical (you'll fail if you don't study!), doesn't answer questions in class. Helpful if you go to office hours. Can be funny. Textbook recommended!!
Professor Utz is amazing! She's very nice and helpful. Biol 223 is not hard as long as you attend class, go through the powerpoint and read the book on section you don't understand, and go to her office hours. Show dedication! Professor Utz will do her best to help you in passing the class. She gives out blueprint for her exams too!!!
I love that Dr. Utz would give blueprints to all the exams, she really wants her students to succeed! I really enjoyed her as my professor and cannot wait to take BIOL 224 with her again! There's one online quiz each week. DO THEM!! This class was a challenge however if you put tons of dedication and study a lot you will do fine!
She's very helpful. Class helps a lot, but what helped me a lot was reading the book over and over again. the tests are extremely detailed so know your details. Do the chapter quizes, some online quizes have the same exact questions.
Dr. Utz is a great professor. She makes it fairly easy for students to succeed but you have to put the work into it. She provides you will all the necessary tools to do great such as study guides, exam blueprints, and best of all her time! I did everything she told me to and I got an A. 223 is extremely time consuming, but not super hard.
Dr. Utz is very helpful. She posts up some study tools to help you succeed in her class. It's a lot of hard work and you have got to dedicate a few hours each day to study the material in order to pass. Memorizing will get you no where. Most of her tests consists of "Which of the following are INCORRECT" type of questions. Great class, though!
During the summer course, lab quizzes are the bulk of studying. I scored well on exams cramming the day before and morning of, and the final was a joke. Mastering A&P and the powerpoints are crucial; feel free to ignore the book. Reading is not necessary. The teacher is wonderful, helpful, and wants you to succeed if you put the time in.
Bio 223 murdered me. Utz made this class bearable. She's very nice but is extremely knowledgeable. Take her if you have to take anatomy because the other teachers are awful.
She's a strong independent white woman who don't need no tan.
Dr. Utz is a great professor. She actually knows her science, and isn't just reading off her slides like most Bio professors at UNLV. She's extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and truly cares about students succeeding. If you study, go to class, and complete the Mastering A and P you should be able to get an easy A. Take her, she's awesome :)
Dr. Utz is the best professor I have had yet. She is clear in lecture and provides you with the tools to succeed. I found myself impressed with her ability to answer questions without consulting the text. Study the power points and understand the concepts while striving to maintain very high lab scores and you will do well.
Taking her now. She is probably the best professor I have had in my 3 years in college. Extremely knowledgeable, actually wants the students to suceed, and is willing to help out. She's very strict, but her expectations are clear so it's not so bad. Hard and intimidating class, but if you have to take it, absolutely take her.
Dr. Utz's class is wonderful. Her lectures are usually just what is covered in her power points, so don't stress if you miss class. However, she'll always explain things very simply. So if you are struggling with something go to lecture and its sure to be cleared up. Also, she has chapter reviews for every test! Take her class, definitely!
This class can be passed with an A by reading the material in advance, attending the lecture and studying the website. All of the material is straight forward, Dr. Utz does not even mention something if it is not important. I wish there were more professors like her. Study for the tests using the text and you will succeed.
Best Bio teacher ive had. Class is hard but she makes it easy to understand and gives you every opportunity to succeed.
Seriously the best professor ive ever. She explains everything clearly and if you can go to her office hours to get further help. She puts power points up, chapter reviews and shows how many qurstions from each chapter will be on the tests! I would highly reccommend taking her class !
Great professor for a tough introduction to Biology. She sets you up for success in her class and expects you to do the work. She also sets you up for succeeding Biology classes (223 & 224). Attendance isn't mandatory but you should attend in order to do well. I gave birth in the middle of the semester and then had a newborn and still got a B!
I had Dr. Utz for Bio 223 and 224. To be honest, I miss her teaching my Bio classes! These classes in general are difficult but she's extremely clear in her lectures. She's very helpful! Her tests are purely comprehensive so you actually have to UNDERSTAND the concepts. I know, shocking right? you earn your grade in her class! TAKE HER!
great class
The best!
Dr. Utz is an excellent instructor. She has knowledge and expertise that reach far beyond what we have starting this class but she is able to convey the most complex concepts in easy to understand terms. She fully equips you for her tests, but lecture and personal study are vital to success. Study the text and the tests will be a breeze.
Horrible class. Her voice is soo annoying, you end up falling asleep 30 minutes into the class. Lord, it was awful. Read the book and you don't really need to go to class.
I would not recommend Utz. Her lecture is extremely boring no matter how interested in Biology you are. It takes some serious effort to stay awake. As a teacher I think she is mediocre. She just reads from slides. Her tests are terrible. She makes her questions very tricky and almost seems she sets you up to fail. Do not take her class.
Utz is a wonderful professor who makes outlines prior to lecture that follows along exactly with the lec/book. She also makes ch reviews for every chapter. Biology is hard, but she makes the class as understandable as possible & it's gunna take A LOT of studying to succeed. Go to see her in the Learning Center if you need help, she's super nice.
I really loved how she would do outlines that came in handy when reading the book and during lectures. I went to every lecture and read most of the chapters and ended up with an A. I spent like 6 hours a week studying for this class. She wants everyone to succeed.
Go to class. I recorded my lectures because she talks a little fast and always finishes everything that needs to be covered for each exam. Notecards are very helpful, and reviewing each chapter twice before the exam is necessary. There are no trick questions and the tests are extremely fair!
Dr. Utz was the very prof. who taught me how to study and I'm beyond thankful for that. I never attended lec because she spoke too fast but her exams were so detailed and comprehension based that I learned how to modify my study habits. If you ask her questions she clarifies them very well. Don't be afraid to take her :) i got an A in both 223/224.
Dr. Utz seems a bit out of touch with the students, reads off slides, ignores raised hands. She also addresses the class like an annoyed parent teaching their kid a lesson. Her tests questions are tricky, more detailed than what she lectures. I was very unhappy with her teaching. I did very well in the class.
Extremely intense over summer! Lecture everyday and lab three times a week. You have to study every day! Read and reread the slides and use the book to clarify and review processes (e.g. blood pathway). Dr. Utz speaks super fast and crams a lot of info in her lectures. I found the online modules for Mastering A & P helpful & DO CHAPTER REVIEWS!
Dr. Utz is very disconnected with the students. It's as if her goal is to get through her slides as fast as possible. There is basically no student/teacher interaction, and no passion shown for the material. Her tests are ridiculous even when you put in the study time.
Utz knows what she is talking about but she doesn't care if you know what she is talking about. She provided study tips but it was way after I knew I was going to fail her class. I studied three weeks for her tests and still wasn't able to pass her tests. She has tricky questions on her exam and she never reviews for the test.
Utz is a great teacher. She uses numerous amount of examples during her lecture. She shows how to study for her exams and how to apply her material in class into real life situations. Best teacher I had so far.
She talks fast, and because her goal is to finish the powerpoints she doesn't stop to make sure we understand. Her tests are tricky. She gets moody and treats us like children if someone rude is talking or when people don't come to class.
All she does is read the power point, going to her lectures were useless/pointless. She doesn't TEACH anything she just reads. She lacks interest in her students. Her study guides don't help point you in a direction to focus on. And the exams were as if she pulled questions from a hat.
Utz provides MANY resources, she wants her students to learn and succeed. Her tests are very fair. I read the textbook then reviewed with her slides. I barely went to class. I feel bad for her that she has to lecture to 200+ students at once (that were usually rude and loud). She's very organized and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
The content for this class is overall tough. For a student seeing this information for the first time around, it was a lot to grasp. The lectures are much more helpful for the student who has read the chapter before attending. There's an abundance of resources for this course but understanding and explaining the information will get you farthest.
This semester she decided to add short answers to her exams. For the record, the length of these answers were NOWHERE near short and most of us fell short on time. Her exams are tricky, but as long as you read over the lecture notes the exams weren't so bad. She does not curve or drop an exam, so study hard.
Dr. Utz was a great biology professor! She was very clear and definitely cared about her students. She took up every minute of class times; no early outs. Textbooks are not required (I didn't even touch mine). Grading was extremely fair. She tends to talk fast so bring a laptop or record the lecture!
Please stop saying Utz is a bad teacher, she is the best biology teacher out there. I had her last semester for 189, and I have a different professor for 223 and I go to her 223 lectures instead because she explains so much and helps make sure you understand it. yeah she talks fast but only because she has so much info to share! amazing professor!!
Took her for 189 and liked her. Big mistake taking her for A&P. TAKE THIS CLASS AT CSN! The short answers are ridiculous; there is not enough time for the exam. Random pop quizzes (even on material she hasn't covered)- you can't even calculate your grade because she will pick random quizzes to contribute toward the final grade. Ridiculous.
+1 on Utz not being a bad professor. She is VERY helpful if you go to her office hours and explains the material well. Really nice and very knowledgeable person!Of course there's a lot of information to learn, but c'mon, just like she mentioned in class, "You have to do very well in the class before you can even start working in a medical setting."
Bio 196 was difficult, but Utz made it a lot easier to get through. She provided lecture notes to fill in the blanks while she talks, offers you different resources, and her exam outlines were super specific. Her exams were tricky, but she provided so many resources to pass. The only flaws I can point out is that she tends to talk fast.
When it comes to teaching, she is the best one that the Bio deparment can offer (I have taken almost all upper division Bio classes). The course was very organized and there was nothing that I can complain about her teaching. The best part is that a blueprint for every exam is given so you will never be left clueless on what you will be tested for
Avoid like the plague! That is if you want to pass. Her "short answer" consists of three long essay questions. She does not even allow you to see your exam, not even in office hours, how do you learn that way? Take this class anywhere else or you will be retaking! This is just the tip of the iceberg. Too much to write, and I'm an A student.
I appreciate her philosophy about keeping a high standard in the AP courses to produce competent future medical field professionals (which most of the people taking the course are.) If you want to get an A in the class, attend all lectures and read the book until you understand everything you're reading.
She is very clear on what you need to learn to do well on the exams, explains things until you fully understand them,& holds review sessions the day before the exams. She works so hard for the students to do well but you need to do your part in order to get a good grade! Short answer questions are time-consuming but not hard.I only have good words!
This class is overall pretty difficult, especially the lab, but Jenifer makes it at least somewhat understandable and will not make the tests too difficult. As long as you don't blow off the class you should get a passing grade. Either go to lecture or be prepared to read your textbook, I went to lecture and barely needed my textbook.
It helps if you have taken an Anatomy and Physiology course prior to this one. Utz is a very straight forward and does a thorough job of explaining the lecture material. Be prepared to learn information and be tested shortly after. This course is used off of grades from lecture quizzes, exams, lab quizzes, and lab practicals.
It's a tough class but if you put in the effort and show up daily you won't have a problem. The lab is 10X harder than the actual lecture. Pop quizzes after every chapter!! She does attendance quizzes which are worth a lot if a lot of people don't show up that day. She's passionate and very thorough. If you like anatomy you'll like the class.
Almost everything on the tests are from her powerpoints and lab. She has chapter review worksheets that are really helpful for quizzing yourself on the concepts. She gives out attendance quizzes when very few people show up. Don't like that she talks so fast sometimes, but she does repeat important info in different ways.
REALLY HARD
She's awesome and very knowledgeable! A&P is a really hard class (like any other bio class) but she makes it clear and bearable. I love A&P and took it in hs but it's still a lot of info to grasp. Labs are harder and take a lot of memorizing whereas you have to know how things work for the exams. Review her study guides & chapters for exams!!!
She is a pretty good professor. Her tests are challenging, but everything is covered in class. If you put your mind to it this class can be really easy. Also Take her in class quizzes seriously
I've taken Prof. Utz for 189 and 223 and she definitely wants her students to understand the material and not just pass for the grade. It's a lot of work, but you can pass. I recommend studying from the notes and do not even bother with the textbook.
I really liked the way she teaches and how she explains things to make them relevant in the real world. She is passionate about Biology and cares about the success of her students. Her study guides and exam outlines are EXTREMELY helpful and she always uses every last minute of the course effectively. Get ready for attendance quizzes, always go.
This class way okay, I just don't like anatomy.
She truly wants her students to succeed. She provides an abundance of materials to help prepare you for the exams. Lecture notes, study guides, and the textbook are very reflective of the material on her exams. Trust me, she could make this class so much worse if she wanted to. Don't miss class! I would definitely take this teacher again!
BEST Biology prof (esp. for 223224) at UNLV. She has best style of teaching- she's fast and detailed but straight-forward. She makes you REALLY have to study. A&P is a hard subject and you HAVE to read textbooklook over notes 247 but her exams are very fair. She never used trick questions. If you understand and not just memorize, you will pass!!
Her lectures are SOO jam packed with information and it was rough for me to absorb it all. Her tests are the hardest I have taken. Taken her twice and did awful both times and never had a problem with other teachers!
Great prof. She's direct but kind. Pop quizzes are on lect PPs & random attendance. Her lectures take the full class period but they're worth it. I suggest e-text & Mastering A&P. She gives you as many resources as possible to help you succeed. The mandatory lab is the hardest thing about this class.
Dr. Utz instructed my BIOL 223 lecture during my undergraduate career and she was on my committee for my Master's thesis. She is, by far, the most helpful, intelligent, and nicest biology professor I have had during my six years of higher education. She expects a lot from each student, but if you're here to learn, you will appreciate Dr. Utz.
tough class, too fast paced. makes you learn two body systems within three weeks and on top of that you would be needing to study for lab too. I suggest reading ahead.
GREAT TEACHER!! She takes the time and effort to present the information in as many ways as possible with lecture pp, online resources videos, she also offers office hours if you need help, love the fact that during test she tells you Im not here to trick you the answer is straight forward if you studied the material, the best at UNLV.
Utz is one of the nicest teachers Ive had. But you have to work hard for this class (especially for the lab). The lab quizzes are easy but the two practicals can get you if you dont study. I HIGHLY suggest you print your notes, she talks really fast. GO TO CLASS, attendance and quiz grade are no joke. Don't study last minute, constantly study.
PROFESSOR UTZ IS ONE OF THE SWEETEST LADIES YOU WILL EVER MEET, SHE KNOWS HER STUFF, BUT SHE DOES TALK FAST. THE CLASS IS DIFFICULT. SIT IN THE FRONT ROW, TAKE NOTES, READ BOOK, AND STUDY CONSTANTLY. 3 TEST AND FINAL, VERY IN DEPTH. ATTENDANCE AND CHPT QUIZZES. LAB PRACTICALS ARE TOUGH. YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR THIS CLASS. I TRIED MY BEST AND GOT A C
Dr. Utz is very helpful and is always there for her students. If you ever have any questions about any thing go see her early on in the semester. The class itself is a very rigorous course, however, she provides numerous resources for her students to success.
Prof. Utz cares about her students and is respected by her students. I had a hard time starting off the semester because of hardships however, I ended the semester strong and ended up with an A-. Don't lose hope, go to her for questions and advice before it's too late! Take notes, don't slack in lab, exams are straight from PP read them at least.
Dr. Utz is one of the best professors for biology. She has clear grading criteria, and gives you everything you need to know for her exams. They're all in the powerpoints and lectures, so I highly suggest going to class. Lab quizzes are a little tricky but okay. Overall great professor.
Dr. Utz is the most organized biology prof. I've ever had! I highly recommend her for 223224. Her lectures and exams are very straight forward. I find her analogies very useful which helps me remember specific concepts for the exams. There is no extra credit or a curve, so you have to be consistent and study the material everyday! Go to Class!
I personally think she talks too much. Listening to her can feel like a drag and she will continue to lecture until the very last second. Otherwise, the class isn't too difficult if you read the text. The exams are straightforward and easy.
This class is not hard! It's just A LOT of information you are required to know, which is time consuming. You'll really need to set aside time everyday to constantly review the material. Dr. Utz keeps the info very straight forward and goes over difficult material multiple times, but she is fast paced. She really tries her best to help you do well!
she is the best.
Utz is really passionate about the topic. She tells you exactly what she wants for the test by providing a blue print of how many questions from each chapter will be on the test and she tells you the essays in advance. Its just one of those classes that your grade is based on how much effort you put in. You HAVE to study.
Great help when you ask, was willing to meet me more than half way. Make sure to attend class with print outs of the slides, goes very quickly. Do homework. Do it. Utz knows her stuff, but she also will lock you out once her class starts. So be on time.
Utz is the best BIOL professor I have ever had. Her class is pretty easy, just make sure you do well in Lab. She offers extra credit and explains everything really well. She gets annoyed when people leave after quizzes, so just stay for the whole class. While the text isn't required, I would recommend it for studying purposes. Read, it helps.
Read the book before going to class, it will really help you understand the material. Be sure to use all the online tools for Mastering A & P. Use her self-assessment quizzes, be on time, take notes along with her powerpoints and STUDY. You get what you put into the class. If you need help go see her and do well in lab. No Homework other than study
Utz is amazing!! she is hands down the best A & P Professor at UNLV. she makes you work for your grade but she outlines exactly what you need to know. Make sure you come to class with a spongy brain and study the power points. Lab is way more difficult then lecture. She is so caring and helpful and really does want everyone to be successful .
The material is difficult but she does try her best to help students understand by providing many resources such as practice quizzes, worksheet study guides, and extra credit. It is clear she wants her students to pass. Also, her analogies are relevant! Just pay attention in class and STUDY and you will be fine.
Overall, she's an amazing professor. Understands the material inside and out, but lectures in a way where students can keep up at a reasonable pace. Probably one of the best biology teachers out there. Honestly there for her students and truly want all her students to succeed.
Professor Utz takes her job seriously. She is always there to offer a helping hand and ensures that you are aware of all the resources you have for the course. Definitely go to lecture and take notes. Study your notes, do the homework, and study the textbook too! It is a tough class, but it is doable.
You get what you put into this class. Utz is a great professor and an A is achievable. Lecture is pretty straight forward but lab is HARD (but not in possible. Refer to my first sentence). Take Utz and study hard and you won't fail.
Utz is very passionate professor. Her powerpoints have everything you need to know, so you don't really need to buy the textbook. She can get a tad boring, but she is always letting the class know that she can explain concepts further in office hours. There's iclicker quizzes after each chapter + random attendance ones. Overall, she's good!
Very unclear. Lectures are long and boring, would not recommend to anyone. Do not waste your money on this course. When going to her office hours for help, she will generally give you studying tips instead of helping you with the lecture content. :( My best was not enough.
She takes pleasure on making the class more difficult than it already is. She takes pride on her tough tests. Try to take other professor.
Ok in all honesty yes you get what you put into this class BUT IT IS NO JOKE. I personally did not know what to study for more, her exams or lab because they are both time consuming. Hated this class. She's super boring. Hardest exam is exam 3 so good luck on that. She doesn't drop an exam grade either so... that's a bummer cause most professors do
You have to put in a lot of work every day. There are 3 exams, 1 final that is comprehensive. This is the most challenging class I have taken so far, but if you review the material every day you will do fine.
I love Dr. Utz. Of course this is a tough class, and it's tough for a reason but she makes it so much simpler to understand. She genuinely wants everyone to do well and if you put the effort in, she will meet you halfway to help you reach your goal. She is so passionate about what she teaches and who she's teaching to. I'm going to miss her.
Utz is a great teacher, usually better than the alternative. Attendance is highly recommended for the lecture and the quizzes (also attendance quizzes). The tests are not a walk in the park, so study early and not the night before. She's passionate about A&P and explains the power points well. She's always willing to explain and is very helpful.
The best description of her tests are biology oriented SAT/ACT tests. Her short answers are brutal, requiring you to know every single minute detail. The majority of her multiple choice questions are in the format of "which of these is INCORRECT" with the correct answer being very difficult to find. Would not recommend unless you're a masochist.
She is the best A&P professor (I had her for 223 as well). However, I do not understand why we have TWO finals now... One is the typical 100-question final for 224, and another 100-question standardized Cumulative A&P (223+224) final on the same week. This is a torture... Studying for this class disturbs my body's homeostasis...
I'm an A student & I still thought this class was the hardest one so far. A&P is DEFINITELY a hard concept to learn. There's no professor that you could take to give you an easy A. You just have to study. She gives quizzes every few chapters approximately 10, attendance quizzes so don't miss out, 3 exams, & 1 final. My advice is to study, HARD.
I feel like if you actually enjoy learning about the human body and you study literally everyday then you will do just fine in this class. But whether you enjoy it or not, you MUST study all the time to do well. Like the syllabus says, the material is straightforward, it's just its presented quickly and you can't fall behind.
Lecture is easy to study for. I urge you to use all of the resources Utz provides because they are EXTREMELY helpful. Use everything on webcampus if you really wanna do well. Read the book for extra clarification. Utz provides everything you need to do well in A&P. Lab is what's more challenging if you have bad memorization skills.
Attendance is taken w/ iClicker randomly & when people leave after the quizzes so show up & stay the entire time! Utz provides blueprints for all exams. They tell you how many questions from each section of a chapter will be on the exam. She is one of the most organized professors at UNLV & it definitely helps.
The one thing to be the most appreciated about Utz is her organization. This is the first tike I've had a Professor to literally tell you exactly where each and every question on the test is. Everything that you need is there. Mastering A&P saves grades. Do the STEM and do well on the quizzes in lecture and lab it'll help. STUDY HARD. Good luck!
She takes pleasure by giving hard exams and making students feel dumb. Save your money and time. She does not want students to succeed. She is one of those nerdy teachers who think that they know everything and expect the students to know everything too. I am a hardworking student and I never thought I would be writing this. DO NOT TAKE HER AT ALL
She did very well when it came to explaining topics but reading the textbook is a must. The lab for this course was much harder than the class itself. Would have her as an instructor again!
Honestly, this is the worst professor I have ever had. She does not try to understand her students when they go to her for help. If you are not doing well, she will only give you studying tips, not clarification on the lecture information. Be prepared to go to tutoring or teach yourself. Lab professor was excellent, lecture (Utz) not so much.
Her lectures are amazing and her exams are tough. If you think you can take 4 classes or and work full time along with this class think again Only 51 perce students got As and Bs the rest did not and I am among them. Labs are hard and her final exam average was a 71 out of 100. I will not take her again ever. This is the first time I have to repeat
I feel like the people that weren't successful in biol 223 probly didn't try as hard as they could & instead are blaming it on Utz's teaching strategies. I got high A's on all exams, quizzes & in lab, & a 98/100 on the final. This class was my life, I studied everyday & I used all the resources Utz provided. YOU get what you put into this course.
You will not do well in this course if you don't constantly study. If you think you're just gonna get by in this course, think again. The material is not challenging, it's the rate at which you have to learn it & the amt. of learning you have to do that is challenging. Anyone that is serious about their success in A&P will make it out w/ an A.
She is very clear lectures and really sets you up for success, but you have to put in the hours to study for this class. There is a lot of memorization (223) and more concepts to understand. It is not impossible to do well, especially if you enjoy and are serious about the material. She takes pride in her students and in what she does. Great prof!
Dr. Utz is an amazing person and professor. Her class is very difficult and the lab is even more difficult. It will require lots of work to get the grade you want. She gives extra credit opportunities as well as random attendance quizzes
This class is what you put into it. There are frequent chapter iclicker quizzes and random attendance quizzes. Exams are doable. I would not suggest studying last minute. However, you can still finish with a decent grade if you do so. She maps out every exam for you, including the sections that will be covered in the free response section of exams.
The class isn't difficult if you put the time in. Cut off for an A- is 88.5 so you do get a curve. Book is NOT necessary, her exams are straight from the PPT slides If you get anything less then a B then clearly you aren't studying. Utz is extremely boring, dry, she just sucks. If she didn't have iClicker quizzes no one would show up!!!
Dr. Utz is a really great professor because she is organized and goes really in depth in her lectures. Her lectures take up all the class time and the quizzes are whats covered in the slides. You need to really try in this class because it is very likely to get an A if you put in the effort of studying.
Get ready to teach yourself & put in hours of work a day in order to succeed. Students aren't allowed to view their mistakes on the exams and lab quizzes, which makes it even more difficult. Half of the class were retaking this course. Avoid taking her class or a&p at UNLV in general. IT'S DESIGNED FOR THE SCHOOL TO BENEFIT, NOT THE STUDENTS!!!!
Highly recommend! Yes, it was very difficult class as to be expected but Utz is extremely organized & provides so many resources. Take her practice quizzes online, they really help. She even tells you what short answer topics are on exams. She is very passionate about what she does & I'm so glad I'm taking her for 224. You get out what you put in.
Put in so much work for the class and did not get a good grade. You have dedicate all of your time to this class. Utz forgets that you have other classes and responsibilities. Lectures were so boring and no one payed attention. Take someone else for this class. All of your grades are assesments. She doesnt drop your lowest exam. SHE IS HORRIBLE
boring lecture and she just reads off the slides. you have to teach yourself everything
Overall, I don't think this class was difficult at all ! You get what you deserved. I think lectures were okay, but it was not boring like how others commented in previous posts. I like how Dr. Utz would map out everything that would be tested on exams. If you have taken other science professors, you would know how awesome Dr. Utz is !
If you're not willing to devote a few months of your entire life to this class, then don't even think about taking her. I tried so hard and I still didn't get an A! Smh
She takes pride in making the class a tough one. If you have a full time job, I'd consider trying to go to school part time if you can't cut your hours. She's not the easiest prof to get ahold of, and despite what she says, she does write tricky test questions. You've really got to master all the material to get a good grade.
Professor Utz is friendly, lectures are enjoyable, and clearly is passionate about Biology. However the lectures are the "easy" version of the actual material. Reading and studying and crucial if you want pass. She's a good teacher overall but I wouldn't recommend taking more than one other class with Bio 223/224 since they are A LOT of work!!
Utzs is really caring and compassionate and loves the subject. However, she takes the fact that we are going to be future health care professionals seriously(as she should!!!). Class is designed to make u really learn the material forwards and backwards. Struggling? go to her office hours. She will help, but you have to put forth the effort.
I loved that Utz was very structured, organized, and straightforward. I have B in the class right now and it is because I did not study as hard as I should have the first two tests; and they were really good tests, that I know I could have got an A on :( . Be ready to study hard and the class won't be as difficult. Also, quiz after every chapter!
She knows what she is talking about, she answers questions in office hours, and there is a plethora of resources on web campus. Just print out slides, read the book for hard concepts, and do practice questions. Overall a really great professor, I'm not be taking her for 224 because her class is from 4:00-5:15, otherwise I would.
Her voice is monotone & fast. Never paid attention in class. But you still have to come to class for quizzes & random attendance. If you take really good notes from your textbook, read her powerpoints she posts online, look up Youtube videos, and study a lot, you will get an A like I have. Lab is a NIGHTMARE though. There are 4 exams & xtra credit.
Dr. Utz has an excellent grasp of the course material and presents it ALL in well planned powerpoints. Quizzes almost every week and pop attendance quizzes are a little annoying and ZERO tolerance for distractions in class. Only real complaint is that it takes FOREVER to get exam grades back, but she has several classes of 170 students each.
lecture is extremely boring! I learned nothing from lecture, because her voice is so monotoned. She forces you to stay by doing quizzes and random attendance quizzes. Easy exams if you just read the book and study the slides. Lab is time consuming so be ready to memorize.
The only good thing about Dr. Utz is that she is organized but overall lectures are dry, exams are hard, and chances of getting an A are possible but very slim. This is the class that completely broke me. Would not take again!
Utz is amazing. How much work you put into this class is what will be reflected in your grade (go figure). I was surprised to see many negative comments. I have never received less than an A on any of her tests or quizzes. Yes, I studied hard. This is a weed out class to separate those who are serious about learning and those who are not.
Dr. Utz, is a solid prof. Quizzes are given for corresponding chapters almost every week. All tests encompass your grade. This class is difficult, so hours of studying everyday is needed. The work you put into this class will reflect your grade. Random attendance quizzes are given.
If you can not devote 15+ hours per week studying the material, don't take the class. The lectures are dry and attendance is mandatory. Her study guides only provide sections (she will only cut 5 or 6 slides out of about 210 slides per exam) and you have no idea what you miss on the exams. There is no guidance provided for this course. AVOID HER.
Biology can be hard, if you're not willing to put the work in. Your grade will reflect the time that you put in to the class. Mastery of the material is required for an A. Some test questions are tricky; the majority are not. If you don't study every day, for a small amount of time--it will separate you from being a serious student.
Utz was organized & well educated on A&P. Quizzes after every chapter. Groups the chapters together well for each test. (1-5 / 6 - 9 / 10 - 12 / 13 - 17). She really makes you work for the grade you want. Study hard. There are no pity points given. Extra credit (10pts) given from STEM research project by Graduate student. PPts are good enough.
There are almost no assignments or homework, so spend all your energy studying for the exams. Utz is really organized and will give you a general guideline of what to expect, but there might be some "surprises", so make sure you truly understand the material. Her lectures can honestly be boring and you might have to re-teach yourself. Go to class!
Hardest class I've taken. 224's much heavier in phys, but Dr. Utz does a good job at explaining the concepts. Her tests are very hard, but she's fair (didn't give an exam immediately after break, etc.). She's extremely knowledgeable, but very rigid on grades, I missed an "A" by .5%, and there's absolutely no rounding. I'd still take her again.
Dr. Utz, she took me on a journey one that I will never forget. The class seemed hard and unforgiving and took a lot to pull through. Although, Dr. Utz did a wonderful job using an iron fist but also showing compassion and empathy. She will give you punch after punch but after your down, she will be the first one there with an outstretched hand.
She lectures the entire class period but its very well organized. The tests are very detailed so make sure to memorize EVERYTHING from lecture. Total of 3 exams and a cumulative final; she replaces the lowest exam with the final exam score if it benefits your grade. Test consist of half multiple choice, half fill in the blank, and 1 short response.
Utz thinks she knows it all. Spoon feeds you information. Has some sort of superiority complex. Her test questions are mostly negatively worded questions, and tricks you She does not give back tests for you to look at. Even if you go to office hours, she only shows you related topics that you missed. Some answers might be wrong even if marked right
Dr Utz is one of the best professors I've had at UNLV. Her exams are usually application questions she will not ask something word for word from the book. she gives quizzes after every chapter as well as attendance quizzes. Do NOT pack up before the class time ends! She will use EVERY min and will call you out for packing up before she is done
Definitely one of the best professors I've had. She's thorough and her exams are exactly what she teaches in class. Show up and put hard work in, and you can get an A no problem.
Dr. Utz is amazing! I took her for 223 & 224 and I would definitely recommend her! The class is not easy by any means but if you use her knowledge, put in the time, and work for your grade, it's do able. Make sure to go to class! She does iclicker quizzes for each chapter that can help your grade a lot & use her knowledge outside of class!
I really hated her. She was possibly the worst professor I've had.
Really good professor however you need to put in the work outside of class. Lots of studying on your part to be prepared for the tests and quizzes at the end of each chapter in class. Lectures can get overwhelming because she goes into A LOT of detail however they are interesting.
Heavy lectures w/ a wide concept base. Her time management skill were subpar. Her class is hard but not impossible, DOES require effort. Studying the night before WONT cut it. Don't get behind & actively study. Download quizlet and actively question yourself. Exams are hard but fair - you don't "need" the book but it helps. Exams are on pwrslides.
dude her lectures are SO BORING! she goes through the material so fast you might as well study on your own. but you have to be in class for the attendance quizzes and chapter quiz after every lecture. If you are having trouble with studying by yourself don't take the class make sure you can get all the help you can. not an easy class at all.
I do not understand why she makes her exams so difficult if there are other professors teaching this course with much easier exams. You need to study hard for the exams and be extra careful because she throws in extremely tricky questions. Do great in lab to support your grade. If you can take someone else, please do for your own sake.
Tests are really hard but not impossible. If you UNDERSTAND the material then you UNDERSTAND it there's no other way to put it. Use her as a resource: Go to office hours to ask question and get help. Test yourself on the material (mastering A&P, chapter quizzes on webcampus). In summary, work hard good grade or play around and be mediocre fail.
Utz is a great professor. She truly cares about each student and will explain things over and over again to hint that it'll be on the test. Lab is extremely tough and fast paced so make sure you study the heck out of the lab manual. Practical exams are very general. Focus on power point and record lectures. Reading the book won't do you any good!
Received an A in 223 and 224 with Dr. Utz. She is straight forward and doesn't trick you. Her exams and quizzes are entirely based on her powerpoint slides. Use her practice quizzes and study guides as needed to help highlight the important concepts she wants you to know. If you want an A, you need to invest your time and commit to it.
Utz is an amazing professor, if you do your part. You have to pay attention- this is not an easy subject. Utz's lectures are clear and detailed and break down complex concepts into small steps. She gives you SO many review materials before exams, and her exam questions are straightforward and directly from lecture. Im taking her next semester.
Really wasn't a fan in the beginning because her lectures are tough and very often too fast. You will NOT be able to get any questions answered during the lecture either. By the end of the course I had a lot more respect for Utz because she's so straightforward and she blueprints her exams. She's not trying to trick you but the material is tough
Would not recommend!! This class pushes you beyond expectation. Boring is an understatement. She goes crazy if you leave class without notice and goes on a tantrum for several minutes before continuing class.
Dr. Utz is a very good professor. She explains everything well and is very nice. She gives a blueprint for all her tests ex: 2 questions from chapter 3.2. The course is VERY HARD, but Dr. Utz explains the subject well and the quizzes are easy if you study for them. I struggled in the course and studied A LOT. Don't cram for tests and do well in lab
Dr. Utz received two teaching awards and she honestly deserved them. She teaches well and is passionate of the subject material. She gives hints for tests and quizzes, so pay attention! She cares and wants all of her students to do well. Bio is not easy, but she tries to help!
If you've taken biol197 you'll be fine. This is still a hard course though, and all the tests are based off the info in her powerpoints. For the in-class quizzes, I would just read the chapter reviews from the textbook.
A professor who is passionate about the human body and wants her students to take that knowledge with them in their future endeavors. However, the information that you are given, use it and apply it your life. She likes to ask many practical and application questions on her exams. If you can explain to yourself the concepts, you will do good.
Dr. Utz is an amazing professor. Those who are saying she is awful did not take the time to learn the material. A&P is a difficult class and a hard subject to grasp but Dr. Utz is so passionate and wants her students to do well. Expect to dedicate your life to studying for this class because that's what it takes to do well.
There's a reason they're changing up the whole program - it's her class and the standards expected. Her exams to lecture material is vastly different and the exams are extremely hard. The class average for exams was under 70%. Not acceptable esp considering a majority of us need 80%< to be accepted into our medical programs. So done with her.
Utz is a very respect and awesome professor in the biology department at UNLV. I loved her lectures even though they were very long and tedious. Hard class, but as long as you put in the time to study daily you should pass this class. I recommend having a study group and attending lectures.
Listen to her lectures and you will be fine. Don't go to class and you will find out that toward the end of the semester it will come back to bite you. Go to office hours. She really cares about your future and if you learn. She has a lab and is really respected! Amazing teacher!
She provides many resources for students to study the information. It's obvious that she's passionate about what she teaches, which is always nice, but she talks a bit too fast. I recommend getting a voice recorder. You have to study to pass the tests because they were very detailed. Would take again.
She goes from 0-100 real quick. Her first 2 exams were easy and straight forward. The 3rd was full of tricky. She spent 3weeks on 6chapters and skipped a lot including spending 20mins on immunology then making it a considerable part of the exam. She seems to care more about her stats then actually teaching. And she is super fake nice.
Utz is one of the best biology professors I have come across. She cares about her students and explains the material really well. Her tests go right along with what she lectures and she gives great study guides. She does lecture pretty quick to cover all the material but as long as you bring a voice recorder you'll be good.
Dr. Utz is alright... There are three exams and then a cumulative final covering chapters 1-20. She basically just reads off of the powerpoint during her lectures... For each chapter, there is either one or two reading assignments online and these assignments take FOREVER! There is also a quiz for each chapter. The busy work is so annoying..!
Dr. Utz is literally the worst professor I have ever taken throughout my three years at UNLV. I would never take her again, and I definitely do not recommend lots of unnecessary online work, incoherent lecturing style, and inconsistent exam questions. I'm projected to make an A- only because of other professors and Khan academy. 10/10 do not take.
If you're a busy bio major like most of us, you will hate the online busy work she makes mandatory every week. Going to lecture is boring because she just reads off the slides. But if you don't go, she might take random attendance because low attendance makes her mad. Don't recommend this class. Take Neiswenter for 348 instead.
Utz is a solid choice for Biol 196. She pulls exam questions straight from her lectures and her exams are straight forward. She does not try to trick you. You have to study a lot to do well, but that's standard for any bio class. She is very kind and helpful during office hours as well.
I took this class Fall 2018. Dr. Utz is such a kind and caring professor and Im really glad she was my first biology professor. She doesnt use trick questions on her exams. Procrastinated studying over the weekend will probably get you a B on the exam. She gives really good feedback when you go into her office hours.
Dr. Utz is a very knowledgable person, however her teaching skills needs improvement. Lectures are very boring and explains that no one can understand it. Show up every class because you never know when she's going to have an in-class assignment. Exams are difficult, class had 72% average and claims that percentage is considered "good". What a joke
Dr. Utz is probably the best choice to take for Biol 196. She's a great lecturer and tries to use real world examples when explaining more difficult concepts. The pre and post class assignments were a bit tedious, but weren't that bad. I mainly studied her powerpoint slides, and looked in the textbook for more info on the more difficult topics
She does not teach! She reads off of her slides verbatim. Don't get me wrong she knows her stuff but she is NOT a good teacher of the subject. All she does is word vomits in class. It's an extremely detailed class. She gives you a lot of material to work with, there is a lot of HW and requires you to know minor details. Will not take her again!
She's knowledgeable but all she does is read off her slides. She doesn't try to explain concepts in a way that her students will understand. Her tests require a lot of studying & she blames you for not trying hard enough when the class average is below 70% . If you want to do well, either set aside 90% of your time to her class or don't take her.
Cons: The material is not elaborated on to make it understandable. Requires MUCH of your time- bad if you have a job. Exams questions are worded very oddly, difficult to figure out what answer best fits- you would do better on an essay exam. Pro: Towards the end, she assigns many in-class projects- good for boosting your grade (just a little).
The material isnt too challenging but its ALOT of information to study. The prof simply reads off the powerpoints. Shes pretty passive aggressive too and easily gets upset at the class and trys to set up in class assignments to lower peoples grades. Class requires way more time than it should. If youre a busy PreMed youre in for a rough time
Dr Utz actually explains the slides she uses, unlike other professor. There are in class assignments every lecture, so you have to go to class. She always encourages us to email her if we have questions and go to office hours if we need extra help. She also gives back your exam scantron and posts the the exam questions on Canvas.
took her for both bio196&197. 3-4 assignments every week that take between 30-60 min each. if you take the time to complete them all, it's a big grade boost. neglect them and your grade will tank even if you ace the exams. even as the course went online for COVID-19, she did not ease up on the assignments. tldr; you're gonna have to work for the A
Her class is straight forward. She takes A LOT of initiatives to get you to succeed, so there is zero excuses to fail with her. Exams are hard, but if you study a lot and supplement the content, you will do fine. Online quiz after every chapter and 4 exams. Don't wait last minute to study, especially her CUMULATIVE 20 chapter FINAL.
The tests are worth a ridiculous percentage of your overall grade. The exams full of trick questions and unclear. There are pre class and post class assignments that take 1-2hrs each, but are worth almost nothing. Plus you need to study minimum 2 chapters a week. She also takes it personal if 1 out of 200 students leaves early.
I had Dr. Utz for her first semester ever teaching BIOL197. I'd highly recommend her, she clearly understands 197 is a hard class and extremely content-heavy so she tries her hardest to make material digestible for students. Provides exam content breakdowns and accessible outside of class. Class is difficult but very manageable if you study well :)
Utz is a nice professor, but her teaching style doesn't seem to help me understand any concepts. For a class that is so in depth I expected to get more from the teacher and actually learn. There was no way to know what you needed to study for the exam so basically study every little detail.
Utz is a very kind and caring professor. She tries her best to make biology understandable through examples and activities. She pays attention to the overall performance of the class and finds ways that could improve our grade. When I took her, there were some opportunities for extra points through small assignments.
Dosnt explain concepts in way u'll understand. Dosnt give back ur exams. No old exams either. Someone said- out of touch w/ students, reads off slides, ignores Q's. Address students like an annoyed parent. Exam Q's are tricky, more detailed than her lectures. No creativity, more robot than human. I was also VERY unhappy with her teaching methods!
A lot of people bash on Utz for things that actually have to do with the DEPARTMENT. Utz has to teach from the slides and time is limited. At the end of the day you need to study pretty hard(regardless of the prof). Nobody likes it and nobody wants to be responsible for their own bad grades. It is possible to get a good grade, but its not easy.
I think Dr. Utz puts a lot of work into her slides and lectures. She has a grade school teacher vibe, and I feel like she talks down to the class a bit. I never see her make a personal connection to students, and her exam blue-print isnt helpful for studying since it just lists the entire courses information. She IS very knowledgeable though.
I am writing purely based on Dr. Utzs transition to online, which has been abysmal. She treats the entire class like children, and I feel like Im spending more time jumping through her hoops to ensure we arent cheating than actually learning Biology. Ive had her before and liked her, but she hasnt been compassionate at all in these times.
The lectures are power-point heavy with emphasis on term you need to memorize for exams. It is a lecture heavy course but manageable. The professor does care for the success of the students.
Dr. Utz is very passionate about what she teaches, and she definitely knows her stuff. I have taken both 196 and 197 (now 190 and 191) with her. This class is not easy. There will be times where it is going really fast. She asks a lot of questions that really make you think. Her exams can be very tricky. Solid choice. Difficult subject.
The grading scale is 75% test and 25% homework. The homework assignments take up atleast 4 hours of your time each week and have little point value behind it. Extremely unfair professor that won't curve, considering the other section's professors added points onto the final. You really have to work to pass this class.
She was horrible. She made life so much more complicated when classes when remote in the middle of the semester. She gave us a hard time because connect wouldnt work for one of the assignments, pictures wouldnt load on the exam, etc. In class assignments can also bring your grade down a lot if you miss class. Horrible.
Dr Utz is very knowledgeable, however she does NOT know how to teach. Simply reads off of lectures and doesnt try to help explain detailed concepts that will show up on the test. Pre and post lecture homework take a minimum of 1 hour each so be prepared to make this class your only focus. Test averages always low and she will blame it on you.
Like many of the reviews below: Dr. Utz is very knowledgeable about bio, however, she does NOT know how to teach. I'm a junior at UNLV and she's literally the worse professor I've ever taken. Save yourself now.
She just reads off her powerpoint slides which makes her lectures useless. The powerpoints have everything you need to know for the exam. It's also really weird how we have to do a pre-lecture assignment before reading the book and the powerpoint. I don't like this class and it seems that remote learning gives professors and excuse to work less.
She is a robot and just reads off slides. Doesn't care about her students, only spewing info. She claims to have teaching background, but treats students like children (bad pedagogy). Boring lectures and won't stop to answer any questions, yet she stops and has the class "work together" on the simplest questions from the slides 10 seconds ago.
Professor Utz is the worst professor I have ever had. She doesn't teach. She just reads the power points, which I am perfectly capable of doing, as if we already know what that information means. Not a single example, not a single explanation. Just me trying teaching myself an entire course. She doesn't care about her students learning material.
I was so excited to take this class in the beginning. I had a dream to become a physician. Well if you too want your dreams killed, take Dr. Utz. She will make you want to change your major. Pop-up assignments, pointless assignments that take upwards of 4 hours each. No study guides for exams. Cried every night. Learned nothing. Pointless lectures
This classs contents demands that you have far more free time than you should reasonably be able to allot as a full-time student. It isnt that the content itself is difficult to digest, but rather, the format of the online environment leads me to feel like I'm playing a terrible game made by EA and forced to make in-game purchase to go on.
She's not a good teacher. Especially with it being online. She doesn't reply to emails until a week or so later. ( Since we are online you'd think teachers would try to be available to help you) but she doesn't make an effort to do so. She piles a lot of work on you (If we were to be in person I doubt we would get through half of this material).
I would not recommend taking this class. All lectures are recordings of Professor Utz just reading off of a powerpoint rather than giving us information relevant for the test. There was also a lot of unnecessary work that didn't really help me at all.
Dr. Utz is nice and she obviously cares about her students. She gives good lectures. This class is just challenging. HW doesnt really correlate to exams, which is challenging and frustrating.
I think she is a solid professor choice for the pandemic as she does not give a lot of work and she understands situations. She also gives extra credit. She might not be lenient on the tests but the tests are easy enough to the point that there's no way you won't get above a C if you study
Bad grades don't mean bad professors. Utz is a solid prof. STUDY AND YOU WILL PASS. Don't know why she gets bad reviews. Assignments are easy and boost your grade. She offers extra credit and even points to exams. Start studying instead of blaming your professors for your poor grades.
This class honestly wasn't that bad. The exam questions usually test your understanding of general terms and concepts rather than specific knowledge. If you study off of her PowerPoint and have a general understanding of each chapter you should pass the class. Do all of the pre and post lecture assignments and reviewing with others is a lot easier!
Dr. Utz was a fine professor. Her exams were really easy if you studied the material of course. I wouldn't say she's the most understanding, but the actual material wasn't bad at all. Her lectures were great and clarified anything I may have been confused about while reading the book. Make sure to turn in assignments on time because she is strict.
Although a lot of people did not like Dr. Utz, I didn't mind her. Be aware of strict deadlines, though. If you don't like it when professors read off the slides, I don't recommend her. One tip to this class is applying information outside of class, it actually does help!
This was my first science class in college and it was very easy. Utz does not bother you at all (I didnt talk to her once.) Watch the lecture vids and take notes. The tests are based on her powerpoint slides and lecture videos. I didnt touch the textbook and the lowest test score I got was a 94 (on the final exam). Work and youll get an easy A.
The only good thing about Utz is that she offers extra credit. The lectures she posts are all extremely long and hard to understand. There were so many chapters to go through in such little time before an exam, considering I have other classes to focus on as well. There are no study guides offered. This class was hard, would not take her again.
The class itself is hard but Dr. Utz definitely did not help at all. Dr. Utz knows her stuff but was not good at teaching. If you want to pass, heavily study the learning outcomes and khan academy. Your grade depends on 3 exams and a final. Theres tedious assignment that does more harm than good. Only managed to pass thanks to Khan Academy.
This is my 2nd time having Dr. Utz and I think she's amazing. She really isn't a difficult professor. Her class is straightforward, at least for online learning it was. I watched the lectures, did the pre and post-lec assignments, made my study guide from the lectures, did the recharge assignments online and have gotten an A in every exam.
The first few weeks were rough because I wasn't prepared for the amount of time this class required. There are a lot of assignments that took forever at first. But as the semester went on and I got used to the assignments they got easier and the class wasn't so tough. There are a ton of assignments. Just do ALL of the work and you'll be fine.
BIO190 is a time consuming class and Dr Utz is pretty uninspiring. However, it is 100% do-able to get an A. What I did: take organized notes with Powerpoint slides and supplement with the textbook (the slides sometimes miss important details). To study, use learning objectives and textbook practice questions. The class gets easier as you go.
Utz is an ok professor. I managed to get an A by teaching myself and spending 30+ hours a week. Study by using the review questions on the book! She was not a huge help and her review sessions never helped. Shes also pretty rude. I sent her a request for a letter of rec because I spent SO many hours on this class and she didnt care to reply
Dr. Utz didn't really do much teaching it was more the student teaching themselves, she never really responds to any emails either, if you like and are good at biology it's pretty easy to get an A.
Dr. Utz is amazing. Yes you have to put work into this class, but if you actually attend lectures you will see that she explains everything in simple terms. She isn't trying to trick you and her exams are straight forward. Pay attention to study guides/practice questions. Use PPT's to study. You will pass.
This class is honestly very difficult. A lot of information to know and remember for exams. This class is very exam heavy and covers a few chapters per exam. She also gives out almost every class in-class assignments which are worth some points. YOU HAVE TO SHOW UP TO CLASS TO PASS! YOU HAVE TO STUDY! This class honestly killed me and my GPA.
Dr. Utz is a great pick among the other BIOL190 professors. She's truly passionate about teaching and students excelling in biology; however, that does not reflect in the exam averages (high D to low Cs). If you're going to take this class, be willing to put in the time and study weeks ahead of the exam date.
Dr. Utz was an AMAZING professor! Yes, the class is hard and yes, this class will have to make you WORK for it but her lectures were always informative and helped me a lot. Use Anki for flash cards and get the image occlusion enhanced if you are a visual learner and you will be set. Also do the practice quizzes. Overall solid class and solid prof!
If learning by reading the textbook is not your thing don't take Utz. All she does during lectures is read through the PowerPoint slides provided in the modules which are mostly definitions. Your grade is heavily based on the exams and she doesn't even let you see what questions you got wrong after and tells you to just read over the chapter again.
This is a class you have to take lots of time into studying on your own. The tests make up most of your grade and their much more conceptual than what she explains through her powerpoint lectures. Utz was difficult to reach outside of class and tends to avoid helping students explain what they did wrong on the exams which she doesn't let them see
This is probably the worst professor Ive ever had. Lacks empathy for her students, gives out various in class assignments, and is not understanding if you have some sort of emergency and cannot attend class. So much homework that takes forever, exams have nothing to do with study material. Worst lecturer ever, only reads off the power points. 0/10
The class was very lecture-based but she is great at explaining concepts further than the slides and relating ideas to each other. If you enjoy lecture-based teaching then Utz is a great option. Review sheets for exams were very helpful and she provides a lot of extra resources for tougher concepts.
OMG! Do not take Dr. Utz, she is by far the worst professor I've ever had. 75% of your grade is based on 3 exams and a final. The pre/post assignments take forever to complete. Her exams have nothing to do with the class material. 76% of the class was falling and she blamed it on the students. study from the slides and the textbook. Don't take her.
I took human physiology with Dr. Utz during the spring 2022 semester. It was the first time this class was offered in awhile. There was a lot of busy work, we had to do pre and post class assignments every week similar to the ones in Bio 190. The exams were kind of tricky, some things on the test were in the textbook but weren't mentioned in class
I took Dr. Utz for both 190 and 191. She is my favorite professor. Dr. Utz is very transparent about what you need to do to succeed in the class. Her exams are also the most fair exams I have seen. There are no trick questions, and studying the important concepts and lecture slides will allow you to receive a high grade.
Human Physiology was an awesome course that expanded on what I'd learned from the combined course the Bio dept used to teach. Dr. Utz really put a lot of effort into making sure we knew the, "how and why" behind organ system function, and the disease essay gave me a new found interest in pathophysiology. It's a hard course, but definitely worth it!
Utz is an avg professor. She speed runs through her lectures, which are already extremely information heavy. She also insists on an absorbent amount of study time as if Bio is the only class for most of her students. Most of my learning was from assigned pre-lecture reading assignments, although they become exhausting due to frequent due dates.
She just reads off powerpoints quickly. Material seems easy but then you look at the test and it's horrible. Don't really recommend, just know this class is anything BUT an easy A. She tells you to have a general understanding of the concepts but in reality you have to know all the details in and out. Good luck with this class is all I have to say.
Horrible professor! I advise to not take her but if you HAVE to then beware of the vast amount of reading material and exams that have nothing to do with the lectures! I studied for 40+ hours a week and still wouldn't pass the exams or get the grade I would have wanted. The only good thing about this class is that she gives extra credit.
Paying attention in lecture is so hard and it's very boring. Her teaching style is just going over slides with some questions in between. Honestly, your best bet is reading the textbook and going to tutoring because she isn't much help, at least to me she wasn't. Also, she scolds the class often for being "too loud" and for not paying attention.
Professor Utz is extremely smart and really cares for her students. She will go out of her way to help if you request it. The class is difficult because of the material, especially for non-bio majors like me who don't have any real interest in the topic, but the grading criteria is clear and she provides helpful blueprints for the exams beforehand.
There is a pre-lecture and a post-lecture assignment. The actual lecture is just based on the PowerPoint given in canvas. It was boring lecture but when I did pay attention and participate I do think her explanations were clear and understandable.
Dr. Utz clearly cares about her students and how well they do in her class. You will have to do a fair amount of time by yourself studying outside of her class if you want to do good. Extra credit will help you in the end if you are just on the cusp of a grade. I only had one issue with her, she doesn't allow you to see your past exams or homework.
There's a vast amount of material (which isn't her fault), so be prepared to spend time learning & reviewing the lecture concepts. Exams are passable if you know the "big picture" but often will go into more specific applications. I personally didn't enjoy her as in my experience, she's extremely irritable. Overall just rude & not personable.
Dr. Utz is an energetic teacher. Before every class, it is expected that you have done an assignment that teaches you the material before the lecture. Lecture is supposed to serve as a supplement to the book. If you want to do well, read every word of the textbook. Tests are less specific than the material in the book.
I think that Utz is an outstanding professor, and that she really is passionate with her field of study. I made the mistake of dipping from her lectures halfway through the semester, it's the best part of class and there's a lot of lecture participation points. Her exams are worth a lot (saved me lol), so get prepared to do a lot of reading. GL!
This was honestly the hardest class I've ever taken. Dr. Utz is a good professor, but I have never worked so hard for a class in my life. I am usually a straight A student, but I had to fight hard to keep my grade at a B. The homework assignments are very time consuming and this class requires a LOT of studying. The exams were very hard for me.
Not a great professor, but not the worst. She cares about learning and provides an ample amount of resources, but the lectures were pretty pointless. Her lectures include her reading off the PowerPoint and either speeding or going extremely slow over sections. Her tone is a bit condescending too at times. Read. The. Book.
Professor Utz gave so many resources to help pass this class. Though lectures were a bit boring mostly reading off of slides. Not wise to skip lectures though as there are plenty of in class assignments given. Her class is relatively easy if you put in the effort outside of lecture to learn material.
She is passionate about her field and sharing knowledge. Her lectures are mostly reading off the slides,as well as the occasional assignment. There are pre and postlecture assignments, then exams. The best way to prepare is to read each chapter from the textbook before class. It is time consuming, but works. She is the best option for this class.
Dr. Utz is probably the best bio professor you can get for your first few biology courses. I definitely recommend taking her classes because she doesn't just read off of the slides during the lecture. Honestly, if you just pay attention during your lecture and read the textbook like ACTUALLY read it, you'll get a good grade on your tests.
Professor Utz has a great way of speaking, and helping you understand the content. Love the structure of her classes, and you can do well if you put in the effort. This course is a lot of memorization.
Dr. Utz was very informative in organismal biology and seemed to be passionate about what she is teaching. The course is formatted similar to BIOL 190, the tests arent too bad, they generally come straight from the slides, but some questions require you to build off of that information.
Dr. Utz is by far the best professor I've ever had and I can't wait until I'm ready to take her again. Her exams go over everything on the slides basically, so know the slides well. I always read chapter before lecture and lecture reinforced those ideas amazingly well. I took her for 190 as well and got over a 97% in both classes.
LECTURES ARE VERY INFORMATION-DENSE, SHE GOES OVER VERY FAST & TRIES TO CRAM IF TIME IS RUNNING OUT, EXPECTS YOU TO SPEND HOURS STUDYING DESPITE HAVING OTHER CLASSES. though she is very passionate about biology, she expects you to be just as passionate about it as her. She is very nice she just expects way too much, class average on exams was a D.
She's the best professor I've had. I took her for 190 & 191 and I just signed up for her anatomy class. She provides EVERYTHING for you to actually learn. The pre- and post- assignments were annoying but if you skip those, you won't do well and it will seem like too much. Bio courses in general are hard but she makes it so much easier to learn.
Dr. Utz is a really hard professor. She crams a lot of homework and assignments back to back and expects you to fully understand the concept. There are pre and post lectures that are tedious and will fail if you dont do them. You have to study for hours and understand the concepts. The exams are also 50/50 on how hard it is. Would not take again.
The Class is hard, but Dr. Utz is the reason why I love Biology. She is very passionate and can explain things very well. You do have to spend a lot of time outside of class studying, but that is expected for a biology class. Great professor all around.
This class has to be one of the WORST classes I have taken so far. The only good thing about this class is how knowledgeable Dr. Utz is about the course material. Other than that, Dr. Utz's lectures are EXTREMELY dense and she will ALWAYS go fast. She will use every single minute to finish the lecture. You will need a lot of time to study.
Exams are strongly based on lectures and class participation assignments. I took this class three times before passing and by far Dr. Utz is the best biology teacher at UNLV. There is a lot of material so time management is important, but Dr. Utz is always available to help and reminds you of the dense course load too.
There are 3 exams and 1 final exam. Exam 1, 2 was easy with 20 hours of studying. Study by doing the questions in the textbook, and read the slides. Also go to SI. There is homework very week you should do it. There is also 12 points worth of extra credit, do that. Lectures sucked try to sleep through them, go to office hours those are great.
Utz is a good professor. Assignments include pre-lecture, post-lecture, and in-class assignments. There are 3 exams + cumulative final. Utz provides many study and extra-credit opportunities. If you follow her study suggestions and stay on top of the content, you are sure to get an A or B. The exams are mostly straightforward. Lectures are ok.
Dr. Utz is an amazing and caring professor! Her class consists of pre/post-lecture assignments, in-class group assignments, and 3 unit test as well as the cumulative final. Be prepared to spend a lot of time studying, while the material is not too difficult it's just a lot to remember. Just spend enough time studying and A should be easy to get! :)
Overall really good, the tests were very difficult though.
Dr. Utz will prepare you for college level higher science subjects. She doesn't just teach you how to study for Bio190 and 191, but helps you to be a better student for the harder science courses to come. You won't truly appreciate her until you hit those 300 and 400 level courses. She genuinely cares, is accessible, and super nice.
Exams contain tons of information, but almost every question is found on the lecture slides. Learn how to connect information and create tons of summary sheets for each chapter and it's doable. She's also a cool teacher, but the material was pretty boring at times. Also, she randomly gives out Attendance assignments so be there.
Dr. Utz is an engaging professor who makes the class material manageable. Attend lectures, study the slides, and use resources like unstuckstudy ai - it'll pay off on the challenging exams.
One good thing is Dr. Utz really wants you to learn. She's very smart. She cares about her students. I still have nightmares I didnt study enough for her exams ten years later.
I attend lectures mainly due to her random in class assignments, but otherwise pretty straightforward. she reads off her slides which are posted on canvas. there are pre and post lectures for every chapter. the pre lectures are time consuming but the post lectures are relatively easy. exams aren't horrible as long as you study.
Professor is fast pace and doesn't actually care about any of her students learning the material. Makes study guides that don't properly prepare students for success. Textbook narcissist, no clue how she has been teaching this long at UNLV. Setting up students for suicide instead of success.
She's not accommodating to helping her students in need.
She's sweet personality-wise (I kinda felt bad failing her class), but the class is a hard class. Exams are tricky as well; like, you can study & still fail. She just reads off the slides that are posted on Canvas, & sometimes she talks fast when she gets upset at the class. She will not round, btw (I ended up with a C-; you need a C to pass)
Although I passed, I feel as though I taught myself, emphasis on myself, everything. She really is just there to read slides at a frustratingly fast pace and hand out assignments every now and then. Her personality is good and she seems nice; however, she has gotten upset at our lecture a couple of times and can be a bit passive aggressive.
Extremely fast paced and basically had to teach myself everything. Seemed to me that she cared more about being on schedule than her students actually understanding the material. Just reads off slides. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities which are important to take advantage of. Attendance isnt mandatory but she gives in class assignments
I had Dr. Utz for BIO 190 and I thought the class wasn't too bad. She assigns pre and post lectures assignments which can be time consuming. For exams I would study the slides over the textbook in McGraw Hill. She has random in-class assignments so going to class is recommended. Overall she is a good professor who is very knowledgable about bio.
Barely failed this course. She frequently mentions that she has been teaching this class for over a decade, but her teaching style assumes students share the same mastery which is not realistic.. If you don't immediately understand material, it feels like there is impatience & no support.Overall tone comes across as she's too in love with herself.
Very sweet and enthusiastic professor. She drops the lowest of each assignment and offers extra credit too. I recommend taking notes in advance since lectures can get pretty heavy and helps you stay on track. She offers a clear blueprint of what to expect on exams and offers practice materials to prepare best for the exam too which is very useful.
I really loved the way she taught the material and found it easy to comprehend/digest. This is a class you want to show up to every day and be prepared to take notes and to study by using active recall and the outline provided which shows where all the questions on the exam will come from. Reading the textbook before class also helps with retention
