Jennie, has a great attitude and personality. She is a huge chem nerd, that wants chem to be fun for everyone. My experience with Jennie has only been positive. She is clear in her lectures and labs. Don't be timid about asking for help. She won't be mean!
Jennie is a blast! I took a chem class prior and understood about half the material, Jennie made it easy to understand all of it. Labs were fun and she really relates to the students. I am planning on taking chem 140 from her. I would recommend her to anyone:)
The last time I took Chemistry was in high school, and I hated it. I'm taking Chem 140 with Jennie this quarter, and I love it. She is easy to understand, and she will take the time to explain things if you need it. The class has a lot of homework, but I don't mind because I understand it.
She presents material at light speed. Her philosophy is that the student must learn on their own. She is notorious for telling students “I can’t slow the class down”. If you want a teacher she is seasoned and teaches well consider Joann Chickering (see reviews). She IS nice NOT compassionate!
Really great and totally helpful teacher. Really makes chemistry fun, which can be hard to imagine. A lot of labs which are easy points. Gives review sheets for whats on the test. Really up beat teacher who really loves what she teaching and it great at helping students understand the information!!!
Jennie's a clear communicator with a great attitude and interest in her student's achievement. She gives a LOT of handouts, but if you do them all just once you can ace the tests!
She is very nice but is not empathic. She wants you to learn the materical on your own. She doesn't alaways teach and review material before the quiz/exam. Her tests are HARD! She expects you to teach yourself. "Self discovery" is her philosophy. New to chemistry? Take another instructor!
she is nice !!!! willing to help and firendy. the test is easy but the exam is hard !!!! overall is ok i think, this class is easy !!!!
She is helpful and friendly.but excuse me, when the teacher says that she doesn't know this part of hte chem herself really good, cuz she is org chem instructor, i don't know how to respond. she wants you to learn most yourself. What is the teacher for?so mainly you need to come everything yourself.the last topic about light and energy was killing.
yes, she is very nice, but she expects you to learn most of the materials on your own, gives lots of handouts and recomm. problems, grades a little hard on exams. Overall a good teacher if you have patience and willing to do lots of work.
Jennie's awesome. She teaches very quickly. Sometimes hard to keep up with. But she is very available for her students and is always willing to re-explain things you don't understand. Intelligent, nice, and makes chemistry bearable!
Cute and helpful, very connected and together professor. I got a lot out of her class.
Jennie's the best... I took this summer quarter and she's fast but if you take notes, and ask when you have a hard time, she's more then happy to help... lots of office hours too so utilize them!
Her class is really easy, maybe one of the easiest i've had. She does like to tell you how hard the subject is though. Its kind of annoying. Every other sentence is "Chemistry is hard"....i think shes trying to scare kids out of the class which is kinda low. But, her quizes are simple as long as you study.
Doesnt teach. Thinks her students are stupid and treats them like little kids. Repeats herself during lectures and contradicts herself. Weird obsession with comparing magic and chemistry and constantly talks about how the students are in there because 'they want to see the "little kid" tricks'. Wanted to stab myself in the eye during the entire class.
Jennie is the best chem prof in the world... i had to take this class over due to the fact my last prof just didn't want to teach at a high enough level Spring quarter... she explained things so clearly I could have kissed her! THANK YOU JENNIE! She is definitely for someone wiht a science major!
She is a great Chemist, however she is kind of disorganised and tends to repeat herself.
This class is pretty easy, on her website she posts all the things we should be working on and also provides exams that were from previous quarters to help you study, so just read ur book and u should be fine!
This is the worst teacher I have ever had.Really bad at teaching steps, skips right through them.Does not allow enough time for any of the tests.Very unorganized in her teaching, jumping from one subject to another. She says she is always available for help, but how can she help out of class if she can't explain well in class.Expects too much!
She never answers your questions or if she does she just creates more and wont answer those. Hands out homework to the point of absurdity. Very fast pace class with little explanation on each subject she teaches. I was a science major until this class, not any more. Worst teacher I ever had, do NOT take any of her classes.
Great teacher, interesting to listen to, good demos, crazy experements.
she's a tough teahcer, but if you can get by her then your other classes seem like a breeze. lots of practice worksheets that work toward your own benefit. tests are pretty long and not that hard, you just have to watch for little mistakes that add up. use her office hours because she is willing to help. final was pretty tricky also fun teacher
Need 95% for an A; lab instructions are not clear; expects students to be a professional lab tech in their approach and lab manual write up. No lecture notes, inconsistent approach to lecturing as to what is expected to be learned vs. what you are tested on. Normal "A" Grade NURSING students will probably only get a "B" in this class.
I think she is a great teacher. But her lectures seem to be unclear, but her worksheets are very useful. Just do the worksheet and you will be able to do well in the quizzes. She grades quite strickly. And over all she is nice teacher but a lot of work.
Jennie is a very good professor. She deserves a better number score than I gave her. She's definitely changed my initial impression of her from the first 2 weeks. She is tough, but very helpful. She recognizes hard work. Good professor w/ tough expectations.
disorganized and hard to understand
Controlling, stubborn, overbearing, unclear, run in fear! I feel like the college stole my money. Make sure you read the textbook before the first day of class. If you don't go into this class understanding everything already, then you will become hopelessly confused quickly.
VERY TOUGH! Has high standards and lots of work put into the class, but don't feel like my grade reflects that. She's a great professor, just not for me. Her exams can be quite a nighmare, so be sure you understand the ENTIRE chapter before exam day. Quizzes aren't hard if you get the chance to look over previous lecture. Kind of disorganized.
do not take her class. I had her for 101 and 140. In 140, she just got worst. She does not like to teach, she likes it when students learn on their own. DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE!!!
This is a hard class but Jenny is a good prof who will go out of her way to give you help if you're struggling. Hint: if she suggests problems from the book, do them, even if you won't be graded on them. You will need to know it for the tests. Many students blew off homework they knew wouldn't be graded and then wondered why the tests seemed hard.
Fantastic and gregarious Professor. Although the exams may be slightly difficult, she empathizes with the student and accomodates to anyones learning abilities. There are plentiful amounts of extra credits to make up for bad exam scores. This is not a class for slackers.
Jennie's class is definately not easy. But she gives a lot of practice worksheets on her website. Do them! They are really useful. Also, she gives a lot of extra credit oppotunities. Great professor!
Jenny Mayer is my favorite chemistry teacher! At first her activities may seem stupid, but you learn so much more than in a plain boring lecture class. Plus, she holds study groups which totally gives you the upper hand!
If you do all your homework, you should have no problems. Slackers need not take this professor! I learned plenty and believe I am prepared for Chem 150.
I never did homework, and I bombed the final, I therefore received a B+; People often find her to be really difficult, but my key was just seeking to understand that content, and if I was lost I would set up some one on one time. She's a nice person, with great energy.
Jennie is so nice. SHe is really excited about Chemistry and wants her students to feel the same way. She's also very helpful and prepares you well for Chem. 150. Be prepared to work for your grade.
Class was totally useless learned nothing my time was better spent reviewing myself... Also had lots of on line requirements for a non blended class.
You can tell that she favors certain students. She tells the class that she loves to help them, but really, she only likes to help certain people. So if she likes you, you're gold. I honestly feel like she discriminated against some students and you can tell who she hates and who she likes. First time met her, thought she was nice, but not anymore.
Jennie is a cool prof. I've never taken chem before but I've learned a lot and really understand the material. If you pay attention in lecture, you won't have a problem. She does cool experiments every once in awhile. She's very nice and wants to see you succeed if you want to. She is also very helpful during office hours. I will take her again.
Really good at explaining concepts! Was dreading Chem, but she made it a lot of fun. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN! She is a harder teacher than the others but you will learn so much more and still have fun while learning! Homework wasn't terrible, either.
She is a good, patient, sometimes hyper teacher. You can tell she loves Chemistry, and does respect everyone. I guess you can tell the students she favors a little over others. Exams are a major part of the class! Her handouts help, and she always makes people do group work. Overall, I'd recommend her, she really prepares you for Chemistry 150.
I had jennie for chem 110 she was amazing it was an online class. The lectures were great and her tests fair. She was alot of fun and I really ended up enjoying the class, since I never thought I'd ever love chemistry, but I did very very well in it
Dont take her she is a nice person but has a total ego problem chooses favorites and the test are huge part of the grade. She is very smart but not a very comprehensible. She dosen't lecture just has you work in groups and if no one in group knows how to do the assignment well your completely lost then she won't help you.
Jennie is a GREAT teacher. She is willing to give up her weekends to come to school and help a study group. I think her exams are fair (not necessarily easy), but a lot of ppl in my class think they're horrible. I really like Jennie's class, she makes the concepts pretty simple to understand. But I still think the group work is really annoying....
She says she will come to campus on the weekends then never shows up. Also says you can come to her during office hours but is not there the only time you can get her is in the science lab but then she often is very broad and is not straight about answering the question. If you need a good grade in chem dont take her!
I love Jennie!! she's the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. In class we do a lot of group work. She lets you work with your classmates first and try to solve the exercises before she solves it on the board. She's a very helpful teacher. She's willing to extend her office hours and come to the campus over the weekend to help us. I recommend her.
Fun class. She made me think that she don't like me but I like her.
If you want to learn Chem then she is the teacher. Dont take her class and think your skate through. Her tests are tough!! But she's always ready to help you out. She offers enough points that make it possible to fail the test and still pass with a B. But you are going to earn it. Besides how many teachers are willing to give up weekends? She did!
Go to her after class and get help when you feel like you're falling behind because she is very helpful. Her lab experiments are a gas! If you don't do well on her tests, you can review the information with her. She'll give you extra practice to help boost your grades.
Well, she;s an okay teacher for Chem 161. I took her last quarter an i got A-. But for 162, i prefer not. She was not really explaining in the class. It's like, you HAVE TO read the book before you enter her class, or you won't understand anything. And her tests are hell. :)
Jennie is great. she allows you to work together as a group and you really learn a lot when you do that. If you want an easy A then don't take her but if you actually want to learn while having fun then yeah, I'd recommend her 100%. You really learn a lot from her. I love it!
Jenny is one my favorite instructors throughout the general chmistry series. She takes time out of her long days to study with you. She is also fun but is demanding. Not easy to get an A, but you will learn a lot. I would love to take her class again
her class is worth to take because she has lots of materials provided. I got an A in this class but i can tell it's not an easy A. I enjoyed her experiment. And her hand-made ice-cream by using liquid Nitrogen is so impressive that i would never ever forget Jennie* take her class if you love chemistry and are willing to spend time on that.
Jennie is seriously the best teacher I have had yet. Yes her tests may be a bit hard, but you have a ton of fun in her class. She does all sorts of experiments in class to help explain concepts. She gave out alot of extra credit work throughout the quarter. There's group work during class, which I like. Overall Jennie is a great teacher. Take Her!
Jennie is the most helpful person I have ever seen... She has a lot of hours for group study and she is so nice... she is just too nice... nicest teacher ever... exams are ok if you study and not too much HW, but it is worth to take a class with her and see her teaching !! she is the best!
Dedicated, engaging, passionate, challenging. Don't take Jennie if you want an easy grade. Take Jennie if you want to LEARN CHEMISTRY! If you doubt her commitment, how many instructors start at 7:30am and are around to answer questions at 8:30pm? She will challenge you to find answers on your own sometimes - science IS discovery after all!
Great Online Class & Great Prof - She is helpful, very knowledgeable, responds quickly to all inquiries & offers Weekly Group Study Sessions Online-10 Weekly Lectures-10 Discussion questions-10 Labs-10 Quizzes & a 800-1000 Word Final Project on any Chem topic of your choice -Follow the instructions & make sure to meet deadlines & you'll do fine!
Jennie is the best teacher I've ever had, bar none. She knows the material, comes to class prepared, knows how to engage students effectively, is unstoppably upbeat, and is unmatched in her dedication. Struggling students: ask her a question any time. Excelling students: ask her about things beyond what's covered in class. TAKE ORGANIC WITH JENNIE!
Took this class online. Jennie is an easy grader. Overall the work load for this class was very light with the final assignment being a 750-1000 word paper (a breeze). However, if you don't study the book well you will bomb the quizzes. I didn't do much interfacing with her so I can't comment on helpfulness, responsiveness, .etc
I hate the workbook learning format, but I still can't find anything to fault Mayer with. She is not an easy grader, but is a solid teacher and a nice person, dedicated to instruction. Start studying early, don't stop, and come prepared. If you like lecture learning she wont be easy for you at all, but you can still learn a lot in this class.
This is a really hard class, and Jennie makes it fun and engaging. She uses POGIL instead of lecture, which was a hard transition for many of us. I hated the format, but loved the class. Don't take this class looking for an easy A. Even a B isn't easy. You'll learn a lot though, and it'll be worth it if you are taking mcats, etc.
Took this class online during the summer. Big Mistake! 10 wks of material compressed into 6.5. Assignments due over the 4th of July weekend. The class and experiments were fun, but the tests were semi-hard. I think Jennie is a great teacher, but the class is way too rushed during summer quarter. Try to avoid summer qtr if at all possible.
Jenny is very well versed in the information on chemistry. Her delivery is definitely an acquired taste due to her unique lectures. I got an A in the class due to my prior knowledge of chemistry and my above par math skills. To be successful in her class pay close attention during lab.. Express will power to learn and you'll do just fine.
Took the online class in the summer and it was the best class. I hate chemistry but the teaching style Jennie used was very effective. I would highly recommend to take this class. Every week we had at home labs that were a lot of fun!
Great professor. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Good at answering questions. Would take her again.
Online. She is so swweet. Always answers emails and tries to help you. Her class in usially not too much work. Weekly labs projects at home plus weekly discussion boards. If you show effort, she will reward you, take her.
Combined class, Chem121, Bio160, and Health 250. It was 17 credits so we all spent a lot of time together. Best class ever, as it really related the three courses together. Jennie is so passionate that she can't help but get you passionate about it as well. Very good at helping outside of class, always has office hours.
Jennie is an excellent instructor. She's very helpful and does a great job of explaining the material. I highly recommend her.
Oh man she is amazing! I love her!!!! she is one of the greatest teacher. HOWEVER!!!!!! it is not so easy class. you will be busy entire quarter for the homework. but you will be ready for the higher level of chemistry classes. I recommend this class!!
This was a hybrid class so we were only there once a week. The class was heavy on homework, both online and in class but Jennie was super helpful. She even had weekly web sessions so we could go over problems and questions using chat and webcam. Would totally recommend her to anyone.
Very helpful, provided many practice questions, and step-by-step explanations for new concepts. Had a super positive attitude, and made learning chemistry fun! Was very thorough with grading, test, assignments, and expectations. She was very available to students. She did not rely completely on MasteringChem for grades and teaching.
Jennie is a great teacher! I took chemistry back in high school and Ive learned so much better with her as my teacher! Shes very helpful and if you have any questions, she answers them very well! You wont be confused at all in this class! She likes to laugh at her jokes when no one else does but that's what makes her unique!
Jennie is a great teacher. She was my favorite of the 3 teachers in the Inter class. She gives us a lot of tools to make sure we learn the material through clear lectures, useful worksheets, online videos, and practice tests. She is easy to talk to, organized, responds to emails and posts to Canvas on time. Highly recommended.
She is great at explaining chemistry concepts and will help you outside of class if you need to go over something a little bit more to understand it. Her chemistry demos in class are exciting (she blows stuff up!) and keep you interested in what you're learning. I'd definitely recommend her to anyone and would take another class from her again.
I took this class as part of INTER 110. Jenni is a great teacher, offers extra credit throughout the qtr, is always available during office hours, very responsive to emails & grades tests fairly promptly. Makes class fun, would take her as a teacher again.
she is willing to help you with any question even in lab, but her handout activities is hard to keep on track of material, and make you feel overwhelming after class. IIf you're are visual student, avoid class, especially intensive class or else better read ahead textbook. Textbook have good explanations.
Jennie is helpful and nice. It is an accelerated class so it could be overwhelming, yet it is still an enjoyable class. She gave fairly lots of extra credits in tests. I love the class and expts, it's fun. Activities handout are not the best, so read textbook ahead. I would take again if she teaches. Nice class overall, have a try!
She is very helpful, and she really cares for her students. I wish she teaches 161/162/163. I will definitely take her again!
She is always bringing up new ways to help student understand the material well. So far The organized professor. but little bit laid back on grading lab works, but orgo I with her was worth it. She wants all her student to keep up with class material, so get ready to put in equal efforts.
love this instructor, very helpful this class was online, learned a lot, I will totally recommened her to anyone taking this class.
Took Jennie for 263, during the accelerated Summer course. She was very helpful, and tests were easy. I've transferred out to a larger university, where our Ochem classes score 40% averages on midterms. She teaches well and provides far more attainable grades than you would see at an actual university. Don't complain about difficulty at BC.
Awesome teacher the whole year except for the final. Super easy grader, let's you turn in labs super late and there are a lot of extra credit opportunities. Unfortunately, she for some ready scheduled a unit quiz on the same day as the final. So for the last week of class we were learning new content instead of studying for finals. Never seen that.
Jennie was a great teacher! She was very kind and helpful, and she was very open to questions. Most of the grade comes from weekly quizzes, so be prepared for those. Jennie is usually very flexible about due dates for the online hw if you experience any problems turning it in on time and there are a lot of extra credit opportunities.
She's the best teacher ever! She even skypes with you if you have any questions. Always willing to help her students! I LOVE her! BEST TEACHER. :)
I took her accelerated OCHEM261 course over the summer and I can say without a doubt that she's the best Chem instructor at Bellevue College. This was the first time I enjoyed chemistry in my life. She's kind of a tough grader but is super caring for her students. Keep up with the lectures and do the practice worksheets and you will be good to go!
Jennie is SO sweet. She cares about her students so much and wants them to succeed... that being said, she does teach a difficult subject and has to cover a lot of material. She isn't the most amazing professor in the world, but she does teach the material and will offer help to anyone who needs it!
Online class with cooking as a basis for learning chemistry. It is the first science class I have enjoyed. The labs were at-home cooking assignments requiring scientific explanation of chemical reactions. It was really fun. The final project is actually a lot of work, but she guides you through it. A great instructor who cares about her students.
I didn't get a very good grade in the class, but that had nothing to do with the professor. Honestly with the work that I put into the class, I'm surprised I passed with the grade I got. She is really caring, and actually cares about your personal lives, and does anything possible to make sure you can pass and make it easier. Highly recommend!
Jennie is not my first choice, but she is also not bad. I did have to ask her a lot of questions and talk to her about mistakes that I found in the workbook and Canvas quizzes. Sometimes it feels like you're doing your homework twice. But it does help you memorize things better. She does care about her students though.
Jennie is very knowledgeable and understanding. Sometimes it feels like she packs too much content in one class period, but it's just because there's so much content to teach. She assigns a lot of workbook pages to help you practice skills. She's even willing to Skype outside of class to help you. 6 exams worth 75 points each, plus canvas quizzes.
She seems to be a perfect professor to me. Material and lectures were as organized as it could be. You never feel lost, everything you may need is provided. She's very kind and flexible, she herself reaches out to students and I would like to have her as my teacher in all of my classes.
great teacher would take her again anytime
I loved Jennies food chemistry class! Everything was clear and the labs were really fun, but she doesnt post all of the course modules right away (she posts them each week throughout the quarter) which made it difficult for me to manage my time around the class.
Awesome teacher! Really makes the material accessible, and is very passionate about the subject. Willing to help students in pretty much any way possible. Required some amount of participation during class, but was generally very flexible about attendance and assignment due dates. Has online videos of lectures which are super helpful!
literally the best organic chemistry teacher at BC. she gives extra credit, shes super lenient, shes extremely understanding and really cares for her students. i took the intensive course and it was extremely difficult with a lab every day as well. its not easy but she makes it doable. she has youtube videos and is willing to help anytime. TAKE HER
Holy crap Jennie is the best thing to ever happen to Ochem. The demeanor of a kindergarten teacher, and knows her stuf. Cares so much about teaching, her methods really encourage you to learn, the labs were so damn fun, and her availability and variety of teaching aids was phenomenal. Made the scariest subject ever something fun. TAKE HER FOR OCHEM
Jennie is amazing! Really knows her stuff and loves teaching. She has great lectures, clear expectations, and creates a fun learning environment. She really wants you to succeed. She even does video calls before exams to help explain things and answer last minute questions for us. Not a heavy workload, and assignments are good. Take her if you can!
Her tests aren't easy nor are they too difficult, they ask the right questions. Grading is also fair. She is very caring, always willing to listen to students. Also gives very fun ways to remember concepts, and her workbook is also helpful. Make sure to ask her for more practice problems. Very possible to get an A.
Jennie is genuinely one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is the reason I made an account on this site, just so I could sing her praises. She babies you through OChem, and I mean this in the nicest way possible. She makes the class content really enjoyable and actually fun, while also keeping it challenging and engaging. Take her class!
Jennie taught the material in a way that was super clear, she only told us what we needed to learn rather than giving a ton of background information. She assigns quite a bit of HW, but it's condensed down to what we need to know for exams/the final. She's very caring and will definitely help you if you ask. One of the best profs I've ever had!
She's really nice but makes lot of mistakes on tests which make it really hard and makes you lose points probably because she made It every day and it is a intensive course. Organized but unorganized at the same time and is a tough grader. Lots of extra credit though which brings up your grade a lot.
Jennie is amazing and nothing short of 5 stars which is why i rate her that- but intensive summer Ochem is already hard as it is and with how much work she gives it can be a fight of getting the work done over understanding material. She also realized this is how many students felt and modified it mid quarter but its still a lot. Still amazing tho
Jennie is by far the best Chemistry professor at BC! I've never had a teacher so invested in me understanding the topics at hand. She really does go above and beyond!!
I love Jennie! She's by far my favorite professor here at BC. Ochem is not an easy class but she's made it so fun for me and I look forward to attending class. Go to her office hours if you need extra help.
will hold your hand through ochem and make it a bearable experience. she bought us all froyo after class one time and i love her for that
Jennie excels at teaching O Chem, making it seem less daunting. However, the limitation of one hour for exams is a significant drawback. Given the complexity of O Chem, having only one hour is insufficient. Moreover, the knowledge that we have so little time to finish, adds significantly to the stress of an already challenging subject.
She is an exceptional educator in ochem, exemplifying care, dedication, and expertise. She goes above and beyond to ensure every student's understanding and success. With straightforward exams and ample time for completion. Through tons of practice problems and meticulous guidance, she instills a deep comprehension of the subject!! I now like ochem
Professor Jennie is amazing! She really cares about students' understanding and makes ochem engaging. Tons of support through practice problems, video lectures, and office hours. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for prepping too. Highly recommend taking this class with her!
She's my goat I took her for all 3 OChems please take her she's funny and caring and made me love Ochem
Jennie is awesome. You can tell she loves organic chemistry, and that really helps make the difficult subject more fun to learn. Her labs are straightforward if you do the protocols, and her lectures are fast-paced but interesting. There are a bunch of bonus/additional videos to watch to help as well. DO NOT SKIP LECTURES OR YOU WILL FALL BEHIND
I took the summer block, which is hell in itself. Jennie mayers made her lecture digestible and clear to understand, while also being caring and able to work with my chaos. She has online lectures you can watch to refresh yourself and a workbook for you to follow along with her in lecture.
I took Professor Mayer for CHEM261 summer of 2025 and had a pleasantly amazing experience. I entered it a little worried because the course was accelerated and so much information has to be retained in so little time but the structure Professor Mayer has made it easy to study and learn the material. It was easy to get an A if you put in the work.
I took this course a couple years ago. Just wanted to come back and glaze her cuz I love her. After transferring out of CC, I'm seeing all my friends struggle with ochem at my 4 year university and I'm just grateful I had Jennie for this. I remember she was very accessible outside of class for office hours and had amazing lectures.
