Jennifer is extremely helpful, willing to take as much or as little time as the class needs to truly appreciate the material. Her classes are discussion based, guiding the class along the material without constricting the students. Grading is flexible and very fair. If you are even mildly interested in talking a lit class, this is the one to take!
Jennifer Atkinson is an awesome professor. Read the books (she's pretty good about not assigning things that are boring), involving yourself in the "close readings" counts as participation and be really detailed or long winded in your journal (it isn't due till the end of the quarter!) and you'll be JUST fine.
Atkinson is a fabulous teacher. Very approachable, very helpful, very nice. She's passionate about her field, and her enthusiasm makes class enjoyable. The workload is heavy on reading/writing, but it us a literature class...I would definitely take another one of her classes.
She speaks really well, and is easy to follow in her lectures. She is also very approachable, and helpful.
Jennifer is one the best professors and teachers I've ever come across. She could make a brick interesting. She's passionate, enthusiastic, young and extremely approachable. She cares about what she's doing and how well you do. I've taken 3 of her classes and wish I could take more. Amazing professor.
Jennifer is one of the best professor ever. She knows how to teach and always try to avoid the boring lecture. She always use interesting youtube to demonstrate the knowledge. Test is kind of challenge but her class is worth to take it. Go FOR IT!!!!
She is just a fun person to learn from which really is helpful.
She is so sweet, but she be asking things and we were like what? I definitely did not like the book she assigned us -.- ! But other than that she is pretty awesome!
Extremely clear of what she wants. There are no surprises on exams. She tells you beforehand, you just may need to study and come to class to get all of your info. Grades attendance. Pop quizzes every week, maybe. Approachable. Cares about what she teaches. Not too difficult if you show up, take notes, READ, & study.
Just a great, enthusiastic and smart professor who really knows how to communicate with students. The reading is not overwhelming but you absolutely must keep up. No surprises.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this professor!!! Do yourself a favor and take her class! As long as you do the required work and show up to class you will get a high grade. She keeps the class very interesting and informative. I will definitely take another one of her classes!
I loved her. I wish all teachers could be like her. The reading was interesting, she's really smart and funny, and their tests are straight-forward. I would love to take her class again.
Very nice! I loved when she would lecture! The stuff she taught was very interesting. She is definitely my favorite so far. I felt like she got to know me well. And i thought she was funny. She is a little strict sometimes and may seem intimidating but shes very kind.
The amount of information that Jennifer throws at you is a bit overwhelming. You are expected to read so much it's ridiculous. I stopped doing the readings about 1/3 of the way in because it was impossible to keep up.
Atkinson is a great and out-going professor. I had her for the BIS 499 course, in which she was clear on grading criteria, gave helpful feedback, and just generally very friendly and helpful. I was not expecting to learn new material and such because this is a standard course meant for the IAS exhibition/graduation, but I definitely recommend her.
Professor Atkinson is a really knowledgeable, kind teacher who loves what she teaches and teaches what she loves. This class does require a couple of hours of work outside of class, but as long as you focus on what the assignment asks for and nothing else, you'll minimize the effort you put in and maximize your grade. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Atkins is a great teacher totally recommend.
Good teacher, very talkative. Just go to class, skim the readings a little bit and you'll be fine. It seems like a lot of work up front but it really isn't a huge work load. Compelling too.
Jennifer is a really knowledgeable, kind, and outgoing woman who loves what she teaches and loves her students. She encourages students to be very self-expressive and take creative risks while at the same time helping them develop an identity through their writing. She is very supportive and always inspires students to put in their best effort.
If you have the chance, please take a class with Prof. Atkinson! I took her BIS 345 Environmental Literature class and it was one of the best classes I have ever taken. She is very kind, open, and communicative, and her lectures and readings are super engaging. She honestly makes you WANT to participate and get to know her better!
Professor Atkinson really cares about students and their learning. She is very passionate about her area of study and incredibly knowledgeable. Material is interesting, lots to learn in a short time but she goes over it well in class. Reading responses are due after everything on them is discussed so take good notes if you were confused by any.
Jennifer was always super enthusiastic about lectures and made learning enjoyable. She explained concepts very clearly and was easily accessible. Gives really helpful feedback on writing. The one bad thing I can say is that she sometimes took a few days to upload recordings of lectures, but this is not a big deal if you're attending in person.
Incredibly interesting class and the professor is an amazing lecturer. Readings are very interesting. Her expectations were very clearly stated on each assignment and thus it was very straightforward. She's a quick grader and gives really detailed feedback. One of those courses that REALLY makes you think. She was very approachable and encouraging.
Dr. Jen is a sweetheart, a great lecturer, and is willing to let you work around and reformat assignments to give you the most meaningful outcomes. The readings are phenomenal. I'm so glad I took this class.
Dr. Atkinson is amazing. Truly one of the best professors in IAS and at UWB in general. Every assignment has a purpose, no busy work. Lectures with passion. Always willing to answer questions. Extremely invested in her students and their success, and easy to talk to. A lot of material but no tests or quizzes, only essays and a final group project.
I took two online classes with Atkinson and loved everything about them. She is a very good lecturer and you can tell that she is passionate about what she is doing. She gives really helpful feedback on writing assignments. Do your work and contribute and you'll be fine. She is genuinely one of the best teachers here.
Jennifer is passionate and enthusiastic about environmental studies. She's always ready to help whenever you need it. There is a lot of reading, but it's all super interesting. The papers are really fun to write as well! I would definitely recommend this class if anybody has any interest in environmental studies.
Brilliant teacher with a ton of real-world experience in environmental activism so you can tell she isn't a poser. Extremely kind and cares so much about students. It's nice that she is willing to work around and reformat assignments for you to give you the most creative and meaningful outcome. She allows you to express any opinions you have.
Jennifer is passionate about what she does, and as a result she's an amazing teacher. She is organized, really invested in your learning, and assigns some amazing readings and it's helpful that she always goes over them in class BEFORE the reading responses are due. There's lots of group work. Also, her podcast and her website are really good.
Dr. Atkinson is so nice! She cares so much and really wanted us to all pass! There's a lot of group work and a few reading responses but it's all manageable. You get docked participation points if you skip class, so attendance is important here!
Dr. Atkinson is hands down the best professor in IAS. Lectures are extremely engaging and there's never a dull moment with her, readings are fascinating and not that hard, and she's a fair enough grader if you show effort. She is also super caring about your learning and success, even outside of class, and is very approachable and easy to talk to.
Jennifer is an excellent instructor. She has an unconventional way of teaching, but she really cares. Her support throughout the quarter was unparalleled to any other professor I've had here, she gave me confidence to advocate for my learning and give myself the most creative and meaningful outcomes on assignments. Highly recommend.
She is the best teacher I've had in a long time. Great lectures, great readings, great feedback on work, and really cares about your learning. This class (environmental ethics) gave me practical ways to improve the world, my life, and the lives of others. Wonderful experience and I can't think of a classmate who DIDN'T like it.
Absolutely one of the most amazing professors at UWB. She is one of the few people who I felt has truly cared, and in her class and beyond I felt supported in what I want to pursue. Her lectures were amazing, readings were super interesting. One of the few must-takes at UWB!
Jenny is F'ing awesome. She's got a lot of energy and joy which really makes the class engaging, and cares a lot about students. I got a 3.7 and I'm happy with that because while my assignments weren't perfect they reflected real-world issues I'm passionate about and she showed me how I can still learn meaningfully without perfection as a goal.
I will definitely take her again if I can. She is sweet, kind, energetic, and understanding, all of which are great. She values your engagement with the material any way that you can and is willing to work around prompts to give you a meaningful outcome, like another review here says. Highly recommend.
Jennifer is a great teacher in that she is kind, enthusiastic, always communicates clearly and effectively, and truly cares about our learning. In all her classes (I also took 356) there is heavy emphasis on working with peers. She gives excellent feedback on writing. I got a lot out of her classes, so glad I got to work with her twice!
It's easy to do well if you attend, do the work on time, and participate. She is dedicated to honest and supportive feedback, and is a very kind person who is extremely passionate about what she does. Lots of interesting readings and creative prompts for assignments. Lots of "participation" points are based on attendance.
Jennifer is a wonderful teacher! Extremely upbeat, kind, and inspirational, and she works hard to make all students feel welcome. She opens your eyes to a lot of important issues, and her class makes you think and reflect on your own life and experiences.
Jennifer always has something to teach you and you can tell she cares about your learning. She's easy to pay attention to, very kind, doesn't pile a bunch of unnecessary BS work, and she's...pretty? Idk if I can say that. Attendance is important because of how she grades participation. Strongly recommend taking a class from her.
She was the first prof at this school to really let me speak my mind and express myself. She gives great feedback, is an amazing lecturer and great at building class community, and cares about giving students the learning experiences they want. Like the other reviews say, attendance is mandatory because of how she grades your participation.
A fantastic class. Everyone I know enjoyed it. I learned a LOT about philosophy and how it's applied to environmental issues, and feel like I'm a much better writer because of the way Atkinson taught. She cares so much about students! It felt refreshing to be in her class.
Jennifer is a really sweet and caring lady, very considerate of students and their needs. She gives REALLY good feedback and advice. The course material was daunting but she made it very accessible. She created a really friendly environment for the class. Take any class with her that you possibly can.
This was my favorite class at UWB. You do need to attend because of the participation requirement including in-class activities. Jennifer is a really nice lady and lectures with passion. Weekly activities and assignments based on the readings, with occasional film viewings, and a final with lots of freedom. Also, she brought food to class twice.
Wonderful teacher! Really blew my mind! You can't imagine that she's as good as the reviews say, until you end up taking a class with her. She has great lectures and activities, and is a kind, caring person once you get to know her. Take a class with her if you're in IAS. She can - and probably will - change the way you view environmental crises.
I can only say that other reviewers are right. Jennifer is amazing in every way. A great human being and a fantastic teacher and scholar. I've taken classes with all the other 5/5-rated IAS profs: Gardner, Dana, Krabill, Cram. I loved them all. Then I took Atkinson. My life changed. I am not kidding! She is a truly unique, exceptional professor.
Immediately caught my attention as someone who's really passionate about what she does. She did a great job generating active discussions about the readings, which were extremely interesting, and provided useful real-world examples to clarify concepts.
Jennifer is a wonderful teacher and scholar. Her willingness to be honest while still providing a comprehensive course is astonishing. Environmental Studies and Environmental Humanities are naturally depressing fields yet she finds many ways to encourage and support students to keep moving forward. I am truly happy to have been in this class.
Professor Atkinson is a kind and engaging teacher who cares about your learning. She's got some major achievements in environmental studies under her belt, and co-INVENTED the concept of "eco-anxiety." She assigns great reading material and facilitates some great discussions with her questions. Honestly life-changing.
Great source of knowledge, very well-respected in her field, and always willing to make time to discuss ideas presented in the readings and in class. Cares so much about students and their learning. There may be some heavier weeks, especially right in the middle of the quarter, but if you put an honest effort into all the work, you will get an A.
Jennifer is an amazing, caring teacher! Even in online environments, she worked hard to create a sense of community where every student felt like they had a voice. Her grading is fully based on your effort, so engage with the course materials and contribute to class. Attendance is important because of how she grades participation.
She's a really caring and considerate professor and I'd definitely recommend taking her for any class. Her lectures can drag a bit, but she always finds ways to make them interesting. She genuinely wants to see students do well and is easy to please for an A.
Took this class just for credits in my final quarter and I was stunned by how much I loved it. She gives clear and interactive lectures with lots of space for student input and discussion. Lots of readings, some of them dense, but she discusses them before the papers are due. Final project has a lot of freedom. Great class and teacher!
I've taken three classes with this professor. Kept coming back because she was AMAZING. She encourages thoughtful discussions and is very kind and easy to talk to as well. For this specific course, she allowed a lot of creative liberty on assignments/projects. As long as you show up and put a fair amount of effort in, you'll get an A.
Jennifer was very helpful and always - and I mean ALWAYS - willing to work with students. She is probably the best lecturer in IAS. She does expect a lot of engagement in-class and on Canvas, but if you keep up with the readings you'll be fine with that. Very flexible and creative assignments.
I love Prof. Atkinson! She gives you lots of freedom on assignments and gives incredibly useful feedback. She is nice, a great lecturer who encourages collaboration between students, and always assigns writing that is very interesting and fun to do. Reading material is extremely interesting, even if dull at times. Would definitely take her again!
Jennifer is awesome! Not only does she have life experience that supports what she's teaching about, but she is really flexible when events come up in your schedule and is always open to discuss assignments and give you the most meaningful outcome.
She is one of the best professors I ever had. Will go above and beyond to help you succeed in and outside of the classroom.
Jennifer is very nice and is a great teacher too. She talks really fast, because she's enthusiastic about the material. Not super hard to follow along. She assigns interesting readings and films and is just really passionate about having us learn. Writing assignments can be confusing at times, but she can answer any and all questions you may have.
Atkinson is an excellent lecturer. You can tell she is passionate about the topics that she teaches and really wants students to learn. If you're in her class, you HAVE to attend or your participation grade will drop significantly. I really enjoyed having her as a professor!
Dr. Atkinson was awesome and very kind. Gives very helpful feedback on writing. Concepts and reading material are super interesting. You will work often with classmates, but there are some great lectures too. Not an easy A but the class is straightforward enough that it's achievable. I would take her again in a heartbeat.
Among the best teachers I've ever had! Very friendly with students; interacts with them outside class too. She tries to make classes interesting by promoting student involvement and discussion. She's clear, organized and knowledgeable about her subject. Readings were amazing. You kinda have to attend because of how she grades participation.
WOW! Environmental ethics was the best class I've taken at UWB! This professor may teach a hard subject to talk about, but she just has so much enthusiasm and passion that she makes the class worth it. Not the hardest grader but there is a lot of work, so it's important to stay on top of things. Very approachable and encouraging.
AMAZING professor! She really cares about each and every one of her students. She has a big heart and a passion for education. Thank you so much for the being the best teacher EVER for BCORE Dr. Atkinson!
To put it simply: she is incredible! Not only are her lectures engaging but she is truly one the kindest, most compassionate, and understanding teachers I have had. She will make herself available to support you in any capacity both in & out of class. Easy to get an A if you attend (THIS IS IMPORTANT for your participation grade!) and do the work.
The class was pretty straightforward and enjoyable. Lots of readings but they're all interesting, and as long as you do the assignments, attend, and participate, you will pass with an A. She really cares a lot about your learning.
Jenny cares about the work she's doing and will inspire you to think critically about your daily life and its relation to the environment. I was a psychology major and found a lot of relevant information that informed my intended career. Make sure you attend: not only is participation graded but also the homework will be addressed every week.
I had quite a difficult time deciphering between assignments due to the difference between what was said on Canvas and what she told us in class, but otherwise Enviro Ethics was a great class. Very nice teacher, awesome readings and lectures, quick grading and excellent feedback, responsive to emails.
Her assignments are rather challenging but the class is still a wonderful classroom experience. She is so sweet. Go to class because it affects your participation grade (unless you have illness, etc.).
She is very sweet and cares a lot about students. Her lectures are fun and engaging. I felt educated and engaged which I can't say about all my professors. Thank you Jennifer for a good class.
Jennifer is a great teacher, but definitely caters to a certain type of student. If you don't like working with peers, don't take the readings/workload seriously, or don't attend class, her classes will be hard. Overall interesting class with a teacher who really cares about your learning.
Not the easiest class, but this teacher is ALWAYS here to support you. She's very kind and always willing to talk. Assignments can be stressful coupled with the readings, but her lectures basically give you hints. PLEASE ATTEND CLASS - she exclusively teaches in-person and does not post lectures, so it's gonna be rough if you're behind.
WOW. I am in her class this quarter and I am impressed by her dedication to changing the way we think about climate change and the related emotions. The activities and assignments are interesting and relevant. I'd say these ratings are accurate and I hope I can take her again!
I think she grades particularly hard for essays, but is a wonderful teacher nonetheless. Concepts are easy but grading and assignments could be hard at times.
Definitely one of the most caring, educated, and helpful professors in IAS. She assigns readings and then creates weekly assignments based on those readings in class, which helps with understanding them and getting to hear your classmates. Great feedback, and also great discussions in class. ATTEND because you will lose points if you don't!
I thought environmental ethics was going to be fun. It was just boring. There were 6 different books for the class that she expected you to read in a few class periods. Not a fan of her lecture style or activities. She likes students that suck up to her and/or participate a lot, and picks on students that skip class.
I was in the Climate Anxiety class last year as a major requirement. I wouldn't say Professor Atkinson was terrible, but she wasn't great either. Readings are interesting and assignments are reasonable. Activities can be a waste of class time. If you don't attend class (without a reason to not be there) she will dock your participation grade!
She is a hard grader, but I really enjoyed her class. The assignment prompts helped me produce writing I normally wouldn't have written. I loved the readings. If you don't skip class, you'll miss out on important info, especially how to do well on assignments/projects. She really cares about what she's doing and what we get out of the class.
I don't like how her class is set up. It's an elective class so it should be fun but it's filled with an insane amount of reading. The bi-weekly reading responses aren't easy to write down either because she is a tough grader on those assignments and they matter a lot. Lastly, if you miss class your grade goes down because of participation.
If you get on her good side - AKA go to class, participate, and do the work - this class is fairly easy. If you're on her bad side, she'll be harsher. I've seen both sides depending on the students. If it's in your major, take her and hope that she likes you. You'll learn important stuff even if she's demanding and kind of a windbag.
This class is interesting but Jennifer really doesn't teach it effectively. Seems charismatic/likable at first but is actually rather passive-aggressive and nagging. Talks way too much about herself in lectures. Only wants things done her way. Likes students who participate and attend. I will say, though, that the final project is fun.
She gave me a really high grade, but I always attended and participated. She seemed "fake-nice." The subject matter was interesting and I got a lot out of it, but I just never trusted her. I wouldn't take a class with her again. She just rubbed me the wrong way. RMP should bring back "skip class? you won't pass" as a tag bc it's true for her.
The class seems hard at first but Jennifer (prefers her first name) is so kind and gives lots of really helpful feedback on work. You kinda need to attend to do well, but this shouldn't be as much of a problem as it is - YOU ARE IN COLLEGE.
I took 3 classes with her and she's great. If you're the type of person who shows up to class and turns your assignments in on time, you'll get a high grade. Well organized, generous grader but never gives 100%. Expect 2 readings per week, 5 reading response papers (650 words min) per quarter, plus a final project. Always gives thoughtful feedback.
Good teacher but you seriously need to go to class. Both to get a good participation grade and understand what she's looking for in assignments. She can be intimidating at first, but is actually very friendly and approachable, and gives very thorough feedback on work. The feedback can come off as harsh but she's just telling the truth.
Jennifer seemed intimidating at first like others said and can be hard on you, but it's because she wants you to do well. It's her way of caring about you and it's a blessing to have. I'm a much better writer because of her and found her to be easy to talk to in 1:1 settings. If you go to class and try your best you will do great!
Seems like a great teacher but the material for the portfolio class in IAS was pointless. She did her best though.
Awesome class! Jennifer cares so much about students and is ready and willing to support them when anything comes up. I loved the assignments, and each week I came looking forward to class.
This class is interesting and Jennifer is a great teacher and person. She may seem tough at first but she knows the material well and wants you to get a lot out of it! Lectures and activities are fun. Go to class, or else you'll get docked participation points!
Very interesting lecture. Highly recommend taking this class.
Not just a great teacher but a genuinely open hearted person. Jennifer is *SO* in tune with students' needs and very easy to talk to. She cares about the future, and it shows in her class! An incredible class.
Jennifer is great. Very sweet and easy to talk to. Class can be demanding at times but if you ask for help she'll explain everything you need to do well on assignments. Doesn't assign that much reading which is nice. Attendance is basically required for your participation grade but she's understanding if you can't attend and gives make-up work.
She was great!! I took her and Cynthia Chang's combined bcore class fall 2024 and it was a good decision. If you're looking for a fun bcore with reasonable workload, then it's perfect :)
