Really good class and interesting lectures. One paper, one midterm, one final. Paper is based on a pre-1770 diary - interesting if you pick the right diary. . Make sure you go to lecture and take down all the key terms (you need them for midterm/final) and you wont have to read the textbook. Pay attention and you'll get a good participation grade
She's an awesome prof. She makes sure your there, and its in your best interest to go to class, but she's pretty good at making a very boring subject very worth showing up to class for. She grades hard on the essay, but if you but in the work, you get a good grade.
Awesome professor. Make sure you go to class though. You're at school, might as well go anyway. Makes for a very interesting subject. Fair grader. Good about giving essay questions before the tests so you can prepare. Go to office hours for help.
She is interesting. i have bought all the books200$ never read them. her class is like discussions so unless u wana participate(maybe points)you dont need them. she never calls on ppl randomly so dont worry.TO GET A:JUST MEMORIZE THE VOCAB GIVEN DURING CLASS AND ESSAYS ARE EASY-USEUALLY KNOW WHATS GOING TO BE ON IT. BUT HARD ESSAY GRADER GO TO HER!
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. just take my word for it.
i never post anything on this website. however, i figured that warning people about this professor would be a good enough reason to, seeing as i would be saving a few lives. do yourself a favor and pick another professor. unbelievably hard grader to the point where it's completely arbitrary, and no chances to raise your grade.
Great professor and interesting class. Lectures are easy to follow. Hard grader, but fair. Do the readings, attend class, and see her during office hours-- you will do well.
You don't have to do any of the reading as long as you go to the lectures. She thinks she is funny and will make a lot of jokes and tell stories about herself but she is neither funny nor interesting. She's a picky grader but if you go to class you can tell what she wants you to write about. Tests are pretty easy.
This was a good class for me. Although she is a tougher grader, if you make a good effort on the paper you will get an A and if you got to every lecture and take notes you can easily manage a at least a B on both exams. You don't have to do the readings because she goes over them so don't waste your time.
She's quite funny, and she does attempt to make the lectures interesting. Attendance is mandatory (takes roll), but even though she assigns textbook reading you DON'T have to do it. Do the occasional extra reading though. Not a very difficult grader in my opinion. Tests are easy if you study a little.
She is really great. She taught me a lot about US History. She is funny and makes the lectures interesting by cracking a couple of jokes are giving an example. REALLY TOUGH GRADER THOUGH. She can be very picky but she helps you out always. She always makes more time to help you so take advantage of that. Overall a great class. Just show up and list
She is a great teacher. Very clear on what she expects from the students. Many people say she is hard, but if you COME TO CLASS and do the readings she assigns, you will be fine. She has two exams and one paper. That is it! The rest of the grade is based upon class attendance and participation with the occasional pop quiz on readings (we had one).
This woman rocks my world! So approachable, she really wants her students to do well. Alot of reading, but you dont really have to do them, they do, however, help with class discussions. Midterm, one 5-7pg research paper, and final. Exams are all IDs and an essay, not hard if you study a bit. Overall wonderful person and professor Highly recommend!
Overall a very good professor. You can slack on the textbook readings if you need the time but by all means do the other readings. It's what bumps you from a B to an A. I learned that too late in the semester.
My favorite teacher of my Freshman year at GWU. She makes such a great effort to make sure that student understand the material and the history of our country. A lot of people don't do the reading and as a result cannot fully participate during class discussions. So make sure to read! She is very helpful and approachable and over all one of the bes
SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR! This is the kind of teacher you think of when you think of a prestigious college. She makes you work for your grade, but you will ACTUALLY learn. She expects effort, but she gives lots back in knowledge and engagement. Its nice that there are still professors who care about teaching. Take if you really want to LEARN HISTORY.
SUCH A GREAT TEACHER! Hands down my favorite teacher at GW. Her lectures are interesting, she keeps a fast pace though so keep up. She's really available to help. There are two tests and a paper. Very fair grader, just do the work and you can get a good grade. Really funny, and knows her stuff. Made me consider switching my major to history
She's very straightforward, but the class isn't very interesting. It's easy to zone out. As long as you listen to the key words she writes on the board and study them in the format of the test, you'll be fine. She takes attendance.
Very nice woman. Lectures are kind of tough to sit through if you've already taken an intro History course in high school. Can be dull. Essay tests with a few key term definitions, one major essay for the semester. Just skim text book and take good notes for an A- or A. SUBMIT OPTIONAL EARLY ESSAY DRAFT, you'll probably go up a letter grade!
such a nice lady. great personality and tells jokes in class. she's funny in class to lighten up the mood because she knows her lectures are boring and everyone wants to fall asleep. her lectures are FAST so have some recording device on you if u can't write what she says really fast. overall, she wants everyone to do well and makes the class easy
On a personal level, Professor Bertolet is the funniest and most helpful professor I have had thus far at GW. If you are looking to knock out two easy intro history courses, her class is worth the trip to the Vern. Do what she says, go to class, take good notes, study, and don't bother with the readings. Go to office hours!
I took history prior to the Civil War on Foggy in a huge lecture. I decided to take Civil War to present with Prof Bertolet on the Vern. Best decision I made last semester. Wasn't too interested in the subject, but she really does her best to keep students engaged. Very intelligent, and the class is worth the ride. If you need the prereq, take it!!
No matter how hard you try to do well in her class, you don't end up with the results you want. I constantly did my homework and etc and always ended up with C's in the end. She kept saying I need to go to the writing center and I am a great writer. She grades to harshly! This is history not english class. Avoid at all costs.
This class is extremely easy and you actually learn a good amount. Study the IDs and review the notes for the test, don't bother with the textbook and you should get a grade in the A range.
She is great. Loves to interact with class and enjoys her students
Professor Bertolet is very passionate about history, however she comes across a little arrogant thinking she knows everything. Also when she grades the final paper she is rather annoying, trying to criticize my writing skills as if I have never written an essay, she's not an english teacher. Overall class isn't hard but she is irritating.
This is a great class. It's a requirement for me, but I don't mind making the trip to the Vern. The professor is helpful. Lectures are easy to understand. You will learn a lot. Take advantage of opportunities to get feedback. She will help you.
Incredible professor. She's so sweet and intelligent. I got a lot out of her class and appreciated how much she wanted to hear what the student's thought of the topics/the course in general. 2 tests and a paper.
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. Make sure to get a head start on the journal/diary project/proposal - put some thiought and effort into it and you will do fine. take advantage of office hours.
Super cool professor! The lectures are super interesting and she's funny too. Sometimes she could get a little passive aggressive but only if you were being disrespectful. Great professor
There's 1 midterm, a 3-5 pg. paper, and a final. She takes attendance and grades class participation. If you need help she is there for you, you just have to ask. Class lectures are pretty boring. If you study terms and don't slack like I did with studying it should be pretty easy to get an A or B in the class. Memorizing facts/dates is essential.
Bertolet is a nice prof, but her lectures are very long and boring if you're not particularly into history. Bring a laptop to take notes with, or your hand will be in excruciating pain by the end of each lecture from writing. The readings assigned are not essential to passing, I wouldn't bother with them honestly.
Bertolet was great; she really knows her stuff. It's a fairly easy class--just be sure to take notes study your ID's. The lectures are lengthy however, they really give you a great overview of the American History of the particular time. One Midterm and !2 Final with and 5 page paper. This class is a nice bridge from High School to college.
Bertolet is an awesome professor and always willing to help her students. Attendance is mandatory and participation is required. There is not much mandatory homework aside from the research paper. I did not attend her office hours except for the paper, but she was super helpful when I went. The class prepares you for the midterm and final.
I loved this class! There is one paper, a midterm, and a final. Prof. Bertolet is funny and always willing to help. She will read drafts of the paper before you submit it, so take advantage of that. I did and it really helped! I learned a lot in the class and it was interesting.
She is honestly one of the most approachable professors at GW. She makes the class super fun and is super clear about the grading. It was a very easy class but I felt like I learned a lot. The class was just a paper and a midterm and final. The paper was extremely easy to write and she emails back quickly with any questions. Take this class!!!!!!!!
The best! you should take her for american history! two exams and one paper. it's easy and at the same time you learn so much
Very good professor - she is very clear in advance about exactly what will be on the Midterm and Final (which are the only two assessments of the year). Lectures are solid. I'm not a history major, but I will definitely be taking another one of her history classes next semester because this one was very well-taught
Professor Bertolet is truly the best. You have one midterm, final, and paper. Go to class as she will take attendance. Meet with her if you don't understand something. She will help you out!
Im not a history person but shes awesome and I learned a lot. The grade comes from a research paper, midterm, and final. Notes and attendance is a must because thats what you need to pass the exams. I recommend signing the waiver and recording lectures because she can talk a little fast. She cares about students and is really easy talk to as well
Lectured directly from the book (sometimes word for word) with few visuals to back it up. Class was fairly dull, but the paper and exams are graded fairly and nicely. Prof is friendly with a nice dry humor, but lectures became boring after a while. Pretty easy A, but boring journey. Also don't bother with the readings - online summaries are fine.
Professor Bertolet was a nice and funny lady. Her class was not bad as well. We had 1 midterm, 1 paper and 1 non-cumulative final. Attendance was mandatory because it was essential to the final grade. The lectures got boring at times but I would still recommend this class.
Very sweet person, very approachable. Personally I found her lectures interesting and I liked how she tried to include different historical narratives into her lectures rather than just repeating everything I learned in APUSH. Graded on one paper, a midterm, and a final mostly, but attendance and a few short assignments are also part of the grade.
Professor Bertolet is smart and interesting to listen to. If you attend class there's no need to buy the textbook. Minimal work outside of class-- one short research paper which is a pretty easy A. The IDs for the midterm/final are standard but you have to be sure to know WHY the event/person matters to history. Interesting lecturer, good class.
She speaks in a very soothing tone, making it all the more easier to take notes. There's no need to buy the textbook, but you might want to get the other books. Everything is fairly simple - if you know what you're doing. Memorization is key for both the final and the midterm. Bertolet will tell you how it is, and clearly outlines her expectations.
Do not TAKE this class unless you want to listen to Wikipedia. She literally just reads from her notes. She also requires you to participate and it is not a small size class. She gives me a terrible feeling on history and the class itself is extremely boring. If you want to actually learn something about history, DO NOT take this class! Worst Prof.
Took the class as a requirement, but it was great. Made me like history! Prof was funny and always willing to help. Take advantage of chance she gives to submit a paper draft for feedback and go to office hours! You will do well! She's funny, so lectures aren't bad. Cares about students. Textbook not essential, but other books are.
Honestly not that hard for an american history class but she is very condescending and rude. She plays favroites and is very passive aggressive. Would not take again no matter how easy it is. Dont listen to reviews on here. If she doesnt like you, you wont get an A no matter what.
Great class, great prof. Midterm, final, paper, and some short assignments. Easy to do well if you attend class and take advantage of help she offers. Wasn't excited to take history, but Prof Bertolet made it interesting. I learned a lot and would take her again. Recommend.
Bertolet is a great prof. She cares about students and is always available to meet. Lectures are interesting and she's funny. Midterm, final, paper, participation. Expects students to discuss topics in class. Wants students to do well. She helped a lot with my paper.
her lecture style is the worst if you're not an auditory learner. slideshows are made up of images and titles while she literally reads off a note page for the entire class period. the content framing doesn't clearly match the textbook, so if you miss something, you miss it. she's nice but this class was much harder than it needed to be
Took this as a requirement and glad I did. One of my favorite profs of the semester. Cares about students and knows history. When we moved online during the semester, the lessons were solid and I learned a lot from them. Go to her for help if you need it. Approachable prof and gives good feedback. Paper, midterm, final, and participation.
For this class, you do most of the learning by yourself, and get together twice a week to discuss the homework. I loved the class, that was until she ruined it for me by telling me to "deal with my problems" during a time of personal crisis. Her class is mostly easy, but make sure to do well on the essays she gives you!
I took this professor this semester online due to COVID. She's a nice person and all but me and others in a class group chat have all discussed her grading. Her feedback doesn't always make sense if she gives feedback at all. Also, both people who were positively and negatively impacted agree that she shows favoritism in her grading. Have caution.
Took this class during Covid so it was remote. Lectures were organized, easy to follow, and interesting. Good detailed overview of history. Prof. B. was kind and always willing to meet when I had questions. Really liked the digital project instead of a research paper. You could pick your own topic. 100% would recommend class and prof.
Bertolet is a great person, and she listened to student feedback on how to run the class online. Make sure to participate! She will be tougher on grading if she doesn't know you as well, or doesn't see you interacting with the course material. Do the reading and all the homework she assigns, it might be a lot at times but its everything you need.
Professor Bertolet is a very sweet person and cares about how you're doing but it seems if you don't participate too much in class or if she doesn't really know you she is a really tough grader. Her lectures are interesting but she reads off of a script for the whole class. Her feedback also isn't very clear or always helpful.
This was my 2nd class with Bertolet. She's a great prof and knows her stuff. It's intro but I learned a lot. Go to class, do the assignments, and you'll do well. Meet with her if you have questions. I did and she was super helpful. Only prof I had who adapted the class for online. The digital project instead of a research paper was genius.
Professor Bertolet is a GEM!!! Her class is super easy and she always starts out by asking us our highs and lows. Class is based on a few papers, assignments here and there, and a project. Would recommend her to anyone and everyone, especially if you're looking for a good gen ed class!
Really nice professor and though the lectures can get dry she always inserts her wit into random discussions and makes the experience overall better. The class is very manageable and doesn't require extensive work outside of class. Taking another class with Professor Bertolet next semester looking forward to it.
This class is very easy based off subject but the professor is sensitive and doesn't grade you off your work but rather the opinion she has about you. If you take the course hope the TA grades the major assignments as she has a history of coming down hard on kids grade wise. Don't bother emailing her either she's quite rude and full of herself.
Kind professor and she knows her stuff. Grade based on a few essays, some small assignments, and a project. The digital project was better than a paper. Assignments were manageable. Always willing to answer my questions. Bertolet knows history is sometimes boring and she injects humor into lectures. I recommend her classes to everyone. Great class.
Took this as a gen ed class and it was great. Learned a lot more than in hs history. Workload outside of class isn't heavy. Go to her for help if you need it. Digital project instead of a research paper is genius. I'm taking Bertolet again next semester and recommend her classes, especially if you need a gen ed. She's great and very helpful.
Professor Bertolet was extremely condescending and hard to get a hold of when attempting to talk grading. I had trouble with a link to the final project and without even reaching out she automatically put in the grade as 0%. Overall extremely underwhelming as well as most of the content related to this course is high school/middle school material.
Bertolet is just okay, she's nice enough but really condescending at times. Class shouldn't have been hard but it felt like she made it difficult by not communicating enough about assignment details and grades. End of the semester she graded my first draft because she couldn't access my final- without telling me first. Screwed my grade.
Professor B has been a joy to have as an instructor and mentor! She has been open to discussion and was supportive in my exploration of history. It was never my strong suit but she made learning fun!!!
She is very straightforward and clear about what she wants, make sure to pay attention in class because she doesn't like to repeat things, and make sure to share a high low at the beginning of class!
Overall, Professor Bertolet is very good. Class can get a little boring though I enjoyed the discussions we had. She does think a little highly of herself though overall the class was good. Class was very easy as there are no exams and the projects were interesting and fairly easy.
Very tough grader and the lectures are boring (she reads off of a script). Feedback is unclear and not helpful. Would not recommend. There are better options if you are looking for a GenEd class!
Great prof and great class. Interesting lectures. Prof. B is funny and cares about students. She expects you to participate in class but provides questions in advance. There is a textbook but you can skim it. No exams, 2 essays, and a project. The project instead of a research paper is genius. It was fun and you can pick any topic. Highly recommend
If you want an easy A, take this class. If you want to take an engaging history class, this is not for you. Genuinely easier than middle school history class and I could feel my brain melting from boredom. She cares about her students but is not engaging at all, lectures straight off of a slideshow which is copied verbatim from the textbook.
Prof Bertolet is such a sweet person, she loves what she teaches, and cares so much about all of her students. That being said, this is such a boring class, you'll be fine if you paid attention in high school because this is basically just a repeat of the later part of APUSH. She grades fair and has some cool project ideas but lectrures from script
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She is a harsh grader, even if you follow the rubrics provided. She also likes to mix number and letter grades, so receiving an A on an assignment will still push your grade down to a 93, meaning receiving anything less than a 100 will damage your grade. She is also terrible at answering emails; earliest is two days.
She is the most annoying professor I had in GWU. She acts like an high school teacher. Supposed to be an easy class but she does everything she can to make it hard. Even though the subject seems interesting she makes it very boring and gets mad at people when they look bored in class. Definitely would not recommend.
Prof Bertolet is kind and her lectures are clear and organized. She cares about students and you can tell she loves history. Adds office hours around assignments and helped me with my essay and project. The project is cool and so much better than a paper. Fair grader. No exams. No books to buy. Teaches history like a story. Highly recommend.
This class is a bellow high-school level overview of the History of the United States. Focuses more on if we like presidents or not, rather than diving into important events and understanding the importance of them. Take it if you want an easy no brainer class, not if you want to learn and grow as a student.
Kind and caring professor who is passionate about history and supportive of students. Asked our highs and lows each week to get a sense of how we were doing. Course is organized and her lectures are interesting and clear. She was helpful during office hours. I liked the variety of assignments and esp the digital project. Excellent survey course.
If you don't at least pretend like your interested in class or raise your hand at least 3 times you will not receive a good grade. one of the most boring classes I've taken since high school. the content was equivalent to a 6th grade history class; yet she is the harshest grader I have had in college so far. Go to office hours or she'll wreck GPA.
Bertolet is amazing! Lectures are super clear. No exams. Digital project and 2 essays. Had to research the project but you pick the topic and it's more fun than a paper. She cares about students. Always met with me when I couldn't go to office hours. Very helpful and gave good feedback. Great class and prof- don't hesitate to take it.
I am not a history person and I loved this class. it is lecture heavy but everything from the lecture is in the readings so no worries if you miss. she is super understanding and is very connected to her students. participation matters and there are 2 essays and 1 research project which is all you are graded on basically. also taught on the vern
She is nice and starts each class talking to us and seeing how we're doing. Assignments are relatively easy, but the essays are hard and graded stricly. I am not a history person so doing work for this class was annoying and tedious, but some people liked it. Lectures were also just her speaking, so its hard to take thorough notes.
Read the rubrics. Not much work, reading very optional, essays not graded particularly harshly. Doing essays will be harder if you don't attend lecture but attendance not taken.
Professor Bertolet is by far my favorite professor at GW. If you participate in class and try to get to know her you will definitely do very well in her class, however it really bothers her when people don't participate and it will show in grading. Her passion for the subject is clear and she is a very kind and understanding teacher. All lectures.
Super nice professor and easy class. Stick to the rubric, answer the question well, and you'll get an A. Two papers, a project, and some easy online quizzes. Just participate and look engaged—she rewards those who do
Class is easy because every lecture is straight from this textbook, almost verbatim. 2 essays and a project that imo is silly (building a website that displays 5 artifacts from a specific time period). Bertolet is kind of passive aggressive. Boring class overall
Professor Bertolet is such a gem. Such a caring professor, and will always ask how students are doing. Her teaching of American History very much revolves around what presidential administrations did in each time period, which was very interesting. Could not recommend her more, wish she taught more classes!
Avoid this professor at all costs. Completely inconsistent with her grading as someone who took two courses with her. I attended every class and participated multiple times a class. Gave me a C in participation, tanked my grade from A to B. When I asked why she said when I participated it “didn't spark meaningful dialogue amongst other students”.??
Ehhh. Not a hard class but can be boring. Participation is necessary so attendance is mandatory (and the class is on the Vern). Prof sometimes refers to Native Americans as Indians and sometimes uses other questionable language, which is just weird. Can be an inconsistent grader. Overall one of the easier History classes though
Let me prepare you for this fa class. Class and content is easy. There's a couple of open note quizzes that you can take multiple times, 2 essays, and 1 project. The prof is so passive aggressive and gives such weird vibes. She grades so inconsistently and going to office hours doesn't help. If you taking for GPAC just pick another one.
Professor Bertolet is a great professor who actually makes history interesting and easy to understand. Lectures are clear and engaging. Assignments feel meaningful instead of busywork. I loved the project. She's approachable, gives helpful feedback, and really wants students to succeed. Definitely recommend, even if history isn't usually your thing
