I have never come across as bad of a teacher as Dr.B. Her test questions are insanely vague and she ask for the most specific answers. In this class, you have to teacher yourself since her lectures aren't very good.
I love Dr. B!! She was extremely helpful during office hours and so friendly; we could talk about things ranging from glycolysis to her passion for running. Dr. B offered extremely insightful lectures about challenging topics and provided the exact information that was on the test. If I could, I would take this course again!
I spent most of my time studying her notes and not so much from the book (didn't even open it once) because 90% of her exams included specific topics mentioned during lecture. Dr. B is definitely a great teacher that prepares you for the UC life; this class is nothing short of easy and requires a lot of outside studying (at least 2.5 hrs/day).
As a visual learner, I benefited immensely from her detailed notes/ drawings during lecture and her powerpoints. Her class is difficult not because of the teaching style, but because of the nature of the curriculum... If you aren't willing to study long hours, you won't succeed in the class. I went to office hours every week and studied every day.
Absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. Extremely condescending and unapproachable. Her lectures were unorganized and her exams were very specific (all short answer). Picky when grading everything (including discussion questions). Will find any reason to take away points. Stay away from her class if possible.
She is definitely a hard grader and expects you to know everything. Her lectures are not the best. They're very disorganized and heavy. Expect to spend a lot of time studying the notes on your own. She expects very specific answers for very vague questions in her exams. She's also a very hard grader.
Definitely a grade you have to work for, but Dr B prepares you in every way she can. Anyone complaining about her is really just complaining about putting in the effort. The nature and content of this class simply requires more time and studying than others, and her assignments are only meant to help prepare you and learn the material better.
Par for the course here. Great woman, good teacher, meh class. Will have her again soon and look forward to it.
Dr. Betancourt is certainly a tough teacher, and this is partly due to the nature of the material. Its tough, and not everyone will be able to handle it. She is quite clear in her expectations, and so long as you put in the effort, she will notice and treat you accordingly. She can come across as cold and distant, but she is quite professional.
As a student who put in the effort, the class is not impossible. Your grades are entirely related to the effort put in. Many including my lab partners disliked her, and honestly, its because none of them truly put in the work. She can tell when you are slacking off. She seems unapproachable, but she is understanding in person. Put in effort, pass
Dr.B is not a great lecturer. She constantly messes up what she writes on the board, then tests us on that same material she mixed up on. She writes her own exams and makes the exams too long to finish in the amount of time available. She doesnt like to answer any question you give her, even to confirm. Doesnt help at all. Plain Rude mostly Avoid
Dr. B is knowledgeable and her lectures do prepare you for the long exams. However, the worst thing about her as a professor is her rudeness. She seems like she hates answering questions during lecture or lab, and she gets very mad easily when things dont go her way, such as when students mess up or not know something. Very unprofessional.
Dr. B. is the best lecturer at SBCC. She is so clear in her expectations for her students, and her exams are not surprising if you listen in lecture and DQ. She is so kind and accommodating to students needs. One of the best professors Ive ever had by far. After her class, i literally felt prepared for the MCAT.
I had a 4.0 until this class and I worked hard. Exams are all free response and too long for an 80 minute class. Too many assignments due at the same time. Tons of partner work and I told her multiple times I was stuck doing the entire projects, but she wouldnt help. Asks for detailed answers and then deducted points for being too detailed.
DR. B is literally AMAZING!!! She has truly changed my life. Hands down the best lecturer that I have ever had. She is so thorough and makes sure that you really understand the material, not just surface level, but as a real scientist should. Cell is a tough class, but you get out what you put in! Hands down amazing professor!! In awe of her!!!
The worst professor I have ever had at CC. While the lecture material is not that hard to understand and is actually pretty interesting, the lab plus the amount of work that is required is insane to keep up with, especially with other classes and a job to worry about. Very condescending an unsympathetic towards her students as well.
This class has to be one of the hardest things that I have ever done, but I promise you that there is an end. And if you work hard you are going to love the student that you have become. This class will make you the strongest you have ever been if work hard, ask for help when you need it, and believe in yourself. Hands down my favorite professor.
Dr. B is a great teacher. She is incredibly informed, organized, and intelligent. My two wishes for this class would be less busy work and for it to be easier to approach Dr. B with questions. I felt marginalized when I tried to talk to her and it stopped me from asking for help when I needed it. The tutors are also a great resource.
This class is way more difficult than it needs to be, and it's entirely arbitrary. I learned twice as much on Khan Academy in half the time, with none of her bs assignments. The only thing keeping molecular biology from being one of the most rewarding and exciting courses, is the professor. At least give students someone else to choose, CC.
Dr. B was a difficult professor, and she certainly challenges her students. I had her in the Spring of 2019 before I transferred to Davis. Taking upper division Biochem is a breeze because of her. She challenges you now, but believe me, it prepares you well for the MCAT and upper division Chem/Bio. It was difficult to appreciate her then, but I do
Im gonna be straight up. These good reviews about Dr. B are probably Dr. B writing reviews about herself or having her tutors/wannabe tutors write them. This class is dangerous for those who struggle with maintaining their mental health. Please be safe. Read her UCSC reviews for an honest look at what youre up against.
Dr.B and her class will cost you your mental and physical health. the okay/good reviews are def written by her or her wannabe tutors as someone else said, forsure! She complicates everything and is very stingy with points. Loves making you feel dumb, try going to her discussions/lab meetings. Too many assignments, no time to study. group works
Dr. B is very condescending to students who don't know as much material as she does. You really don't have time for anything else if you're trying to pass. She expects specific answers on her exams that are filled with vague questions. Take it with someone else if you can. No doubt, the hardest class to take online.
Never felt so down before until this class. Impossible to pass this class having to work and having other classes. I wish Dr. B is more realistic & accommodating to students needs.4000+ words lit review + another 17+ pages of proposal and 2 presentations will be due(all team work which take forever)then final exam right after. No time to breathe
I recommend skipping this class. Participation required and you wont have a chance to say nothing before youre cut off. Tests are just to stress you wont have time to finish or chance think about question to answer. Class requires a lot of points to pass and lab and lecture points are separate. shell take off atleast 1/2 point even if not wrong
Dr. Bs class is so discouraging. Theres extraneous amount of research and written assignments required in nearby due dates. Her tests are passable if you can recite her lectures in 80 minutes, all free response vague questions. She does not car about her students, and is proud to say that some may have been trying to pass her class for 3rd time.
Dr.B is the worst professor. Simply wants students to fail. She's unkind, unprofessional, un-understanding, and is extremely biased in her class. Unfair loads of work for a passing grade. Exams aren't for purpose of assessing learning, no time to finish or think about questions, time is extremely limited. Lectures go 20+ mins overtime. Unclear.
Simply the worst professor at SBCC. So many research assignments that are impossible to keep up. Dr. B is plainly rude and gets mad at students if they don't know the material. It's unfortunate how she's the only professor that teaches cell. Exams are too long for the time that is given. Her lectures are unorganized and go over 20+ min.
This was the worst class I've ever taken in my academic career, and it made me change majors. The positive reviews must be from wannabe tutors or from Dr. B herself because they are delusional. She was incredibly negative, discouraging, and condescending while expecting an unreasonable level of perfection on an unmanageable courseload. Very rude.
Dr. B is super RUDE and DEGRADES students. Her lectures go way over time and class is overcrowded w unclear instructions from previous yrs. Dr.B's class is unfair on so many levels to so many students in various ways. sbcc should do better and find someone worthy and capable of teaching this class successfully and fairly. Dr. B is the worst ever
Dr.B simply wants you to fail &uses excuse that nature of material is difficult . Her lectures are from Khan Academy with added confusion from her. she goes over class time by over 20 mins, very repetitive, confusing, all over the place. Her exams are passable if this is the only class you take and you have time to memorize 1hr 40+mins x8 lectures.
Dr.B is rude, narcissistic, unclear in expectations and instructions. Only grades lab work and has her tutors grading exams using a vague key, points are taken off left and right instead of getting a chance for partial points cuz the test is all free-response. Tests are all vague, won't know what exactly she's asking for or how much is ok to write.
Created an account just to warn future students to NOT take her or take this class alone and pray to pass. Tests averages are F/D. Worst professor ever. Dr. B bluntly talks down to students and makes them feel dumb. The amount of work needed is overwhelming especially with the type of tests she writes being all free response. miss something & 0/10
Dr. B is the worst professor ever! Her exams are all tricky, vague, questions. If you write F instead of false she marks 0. Her motto is dont ask me about it I wont answer. Shes literally the worst. Her lectures are VERY CONDENSED always a lot overtime. Exams arent to test what youve learned but to fail you, no time to answer even if you study
Dr. B sets unrealistic expectations for students during a limited amount of time and expects unreasonable level of perfection for the unimaginable load of assignments. Those who passed are students taking her class alone. Students taking this class with only one other class are drastically struggling, its not fair at all. Very condensed
This class is absurd. I was on a total of 14 credit hours this semester and working part time, and it almost broke me. I've never seen so many capable students so discouraged. I'll give her this, she's tenacious, but she's a horrible professor. The worst part is, there's no substitute; she's got a monopoly on the class. CC, y'all gotta do better.
To future students: STAY AWAY! Dr. B is very condensing to the point where you will always be behind and never caught up shes the worst professor ever. Nothing is ever good enough for her she was always so discouraging and negative. A half time job with this class was a struggle and Im not sure if Ill pass. This class will cost you your health.
Holds students to a standard she doesn't even come close to herself.
This class is passable if you have immense free time to teach yourself the material after lects. I do not recommend working while taking this class or taking other classes. Lects were mostly verbatim. DQs were stressful and she spent most of the time interrupting students. Lab reports were expected to be perfect though not enough time was given.
The most impatient professor I've ever had. Wouldn't give students chances before she cuts them off. Expects a high level of perfection while throwing extensive amount of assignments. It felt like I'm at a grad school rather than a CC. This class would've been more enjoyable if she doesn't make students feel dumb. Unprofessional and unsupportive.
You will regret it when you take her. She expects students to have absolutely no life and no responsibilities other than her class. Her tests were unforgiving at best. final was more of 4hour exam only gave us 3hours. all midterms averaged failing grades. never worked so hard for a class to be on the edge.
She makes you resent the class because of her, instead of appreciating the class because of the material
This class was overwhelming and way more complicated than it needs to be. Dr. B was very condensing. Sadly all students were discouraged and overwhelmed. Dr. B always went 20+ mins overtime in her lectures. The material was very fun and interesting but class was overly condensed with lengthy assignments.
Dr. B's class is difficult, but you truly walk away with a deep understanding of MCB! Start studying for the exams DAYS before you take them, as they are very lecture heavy. Also make sure you review everything mentioned in lecture because she will sometimes have questions about things that were barely talked about. Very knowledgeable prof!
STAY AWAY! do take this class elsewhere with a real professor many other colleges offer it online. Dr. B is terribly the worst professor ever. sbcc does need to find a replacement that is worthy and capable of teaching
Dr. B is helpful in establishing good study skills for UC level, but she makes cell biology much harder than it needs to be. Her lectures can be confusing and class settings are intimidating for questions. She's organized about grading, but seeks very specific answers on exams. Study hard and go to all tutor sessions!
This class was tough. The reviews on here are real. If you must work or take more than 10units I would advise you to take this class elsewhere but check with UC/CSUs you want to transfer to before. Great great lectures but heavy heavy workload and exams are all free response & vague. You must be very firm with your studying in this class to pass.
I found it hard to fit in meals, sleep, and time for myself while taking her class. She was incredibly negative, rude to students who lacked confidence in their responses, and expected perfection in every assignment. Expect for there to be something due each day. She does not lighten the work load during exam weeks.
Dr. B is not helpful in establishing study skill for a UC but shes helpful in making you change majors and dislike anything that has to do with biology after taking her class. She cant abide by the standards she set for students.
This class will have the worst impact on your GPA and mental health. Not worth it to stick through a class with a professor that does not care about you or your success. Dr. B thinks everyone is living the same lives and she has no mercy. i.e. u complete a 17pg group lab report and doesnt get submitted by the min of due time 0 and so forth.
I had this class in Spring 2020 and it was terrible. After transitioning to online learning due to covid, Dr. B made the class much more complicated than it should be. It took a huge toll on my mental health that I had to drop this class abruptly. No time to breathe in between assignments and group projects. Lots of points are required to pass.
Out of the three bio classes at cc, this one takes the cake of being the hardest. Dr B deems herself as a professional yet she degrades students who are struggling and throws shades at them in front of the entire class. If you want to work with a professor that cares about your success, do not take this course. There are better professors out there
The biggest regret of my life is taking this class and not listening to students on here. Currently stuck. It is impossible to find motivation with Dr.B and the class is not doable when having other classes and working, legit no time to eat always badly stressed.
The most emotionally exhausting thing I've ever done. Cried every week in this class from stress. Maybe she can teach, doesn't mean she should.
Every assignment/exam is overwhelming and tedious. Simply existing on the same planet as Dr. B feels like a chore.
Giving a warning to future students: if you're thinking about cheating your way through this class, think again. Every assignment that is turned in gets submitted to turnitin and Dr B uses proctorio for exams. So many group projects that are not given enough time and are expected to be perfect. I never thought I'd work hard just to fail.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. After doing some research, her class actually goes into more detail than the MCAT. Have a job? You probably won't pass. Family obligations? Not passing. God forbid other classes?? Not a chance. Do yourself a favor and take this class anywhere else, you mental health and GPA will thank you.
Please take this course literally anywhere else. You wont have time to sleep properly, eat at decent times, and no time to decompress. The volume of simultaneous work between papers, labs, and exams is brutal. Expect her lectures to go significantly over time. If you have family issues, do not take this course. Save your GPA.
DR. B is the worst professor ever, super rude and not understanding. This class is much worst than the MCAT or a UC system she's supposedly preparing us for because it's not the material that's the issue but the professor and her negative and poor effect on the students and class in general. She needs to get out of her bubble and listen to students
Skip this teacher and take this class anywhere elsewhere. Your gpa, mental health, and future self will thank u. You dont need to go through all she puts you through to learn the material shes teaching, you can literally learn it on your own without even paying for the class through khan academy so take it elsewhere with a real professor.
Until cc finds a professor who's worthy of teaching cell, avoid this class at all cost. I've cried at least 4x a week from stress and anxiety. Dr B doesn't seem to care that she's throwing excessive amount of work that needs to be done. On top of it all, her narcissistic attitude lowers students self esteem and she gets frustrated very easily.
This class is a burden. not due to the material but rather due to the professor and the abundant amount of work required in a short proximity along with exams. Very discouraging and not understanding if anything that isnt even your fault occurs. Lots of studying required and lots of assignments that are graded microscopically at the same time.
I can't emphasize how many headaches I've had from being in this class. After reading Dr B's negative reviews here and from ucsc, I wasn't surprised. Lectures are mostly taken verbatim from khan academy. You have to study super hard for exams since it's all free response. Expect something that is due every week, especially in lab.
Came here just to say that basically all her students, besides a couple maybe, past and current have the same exact negative comments on this class. It's disturbing yet relieving to know that I'm not the only one going through this now.
This course was so stressful that I'm taking a gap year. My mental and physical health have plummeted. The amount of work given by Dr. B is unnecessary and impossible unless you study 24/7. I was really excited for this class, but the stress and her inability to understand that students have lives outside of school ruined it for me.
Honestly, Jennifer doesnt deserve the title of Dr. If youre someone thats proud to tell your students that youve failed many students and its their third time taking your class, you dont deserve to be called Dr. or Professor. I hope SBCC doesnt offer her a full-time job as a professor, otherwise... youre all screwed out of luck.
This class is insane!!!l long lectures, too many long homework assignments (most of which group projects where only one/couple people do all the work), the exams are based on memorizing 12hrs+ of lectures and typing all that info in a 3hour exam. Dr. Bs class led to so many promising students to lose transfer opportunities and fall behind.
We are supposed to be challenged as STEM students, but not put down and made to feel like we aren't capable of being in STEM. This is what Dr. B does, she makes you feel incapable. I have never seen so many students work so hard to barely get a C. Take this class elsewhere if you want to save your mental health.
Just because a professor has a PhD, doesn't always mean they're good. Dr. B's class is not worth having meltdowns for and she has high expectations for her students to study at least 12+ hours a day. If you failed at least one of the exams, you're pretty much screwed. Do yourself a favor and take this class somewhere else with an actual professor.
As someone who earned an A, Im here to tell you that while its not easy, its very much doable if are willing to truly dedicate yourself to this course. Dr. b will toughen you up and make you a better student and scientist, but you have to want that for yourself too. Strongly recommend not working/taking a heavy course load if at all possible
Dr B is a great person and inspiring prof, but this class is hard. The material isn't hard to learn, you just have to be specific and labs require LOTS of writing. DQ's, lecture obj, PAL sessions are great. She does go over time in lecture but takes time to explain hard concepts well. If you're worried, visit her in office hours first week to talk
Not only I noticed that many students have failed dr B's class, she practically failed herself as a professor. Dr B doesn't care about student needs even if it's an online class during a pandemic. If you're not as passionate about cell as Dr B, she will disown you. SBCC really needs to do better and hire someone else who is competent to teach.
Dr. B really cares about her students and she is very knowledgeable. If you put in the effort, she will notice and treat you accordingly. I learned so much and really feel prepared for the UC. Start the assignments early, do the DQs, and go to the PAL sessions. This class is a lot of work, so time management is key here. My favorite class so far.
This by far the hardest class I have ever taken. If you can take this class at another institution do so without hesitation. The guidelines are clear, the grading is harsh. The amount of information you are required to memorize is astronomical. Keep your sanity, dignity and major by avoiding this class.
Visibly irritated and aggressive. Enjoys belittling students for no reason. Harsh grading. Tests poorly worded and formatted. Little to no positive feedback or room for error. Astronomical amount of papers, assignments, presentations, and exams in short time frames. Goes overtime in lecture every week and still manages to be behind. Barely passed.
Dr.B couldn't care less about her students. She's literally the worst professor ever and will drive you to the point where it feels like everything is collapsing over your head and there's no point in trying anymore. she expects you to not do anything but study/complete hw for her class only. she would rather see students broken down than adjust
Don't even bother just take this class elsewhere, anywhere, unless you're dsps with extra time on exams and special accommodations maybe you may have a chance. SBCC should really find a professor who's worthy and capable of structuring, organizing, and teaching a cell bio class. Dr. B is not a good professor all around, she's selfish and uncaring.
This was the hardest college course I've taken including at UC and community college campuses. She really will prepare you for further studies in bio, the MCAT, and beyond. Pay attention, do the work, follow her guidelines, get to know her in office hours, and you will do fine. She is an amazing and caring professor.
Dr. B is the worst professor ever. She is not qualified to deal with students let alone teach them. Dr. B is very selfish and does not care about students well being or success, she just cares to prove that her class is the hardest at sbcc because she believes thats something to be proud of. Material is not hard but Dr. B does make it difficult.
This class is heavy on the mind and heart. Expect to just be discouraged, disappointed, and disrespected. Dr. B is too much over the board with her unprofessionalism. No matter how much you try, work hard, or complete youll end up close to failing. If you have other classes this class is basically impossible unless she adjusts it
This class is designed to fail and discourage you! Do not take this class with Dr. B. Take it elsewhere at any other cc or UC where youll be learning from a real professional.
I know that the pandemic has affected alot teachers caplebilitys on teaching there classes virtually for better or worse. Before taking the class I was aware that Dr.B is not a good teacher. Dr.B has gone from bad to worse. This class is so unbelievably hard that it's almost impossible to pass. Dr.B is not worthy to be teaching that class.
I attended Berkely, and graduated at the top of my class. I am a tenacious student. I work hard for top grades and generally have great respect for my professors. Dr. B however is in a league of her own. Although,I earned an A in her Bio 103 class, I was despondent throughout most of the semester. This was the worst academic experience I have had.
Absolutely loved the content but I did not enjoy the class formatting or professionalism of Dr. B. She is very emotional reactive and does not create an uplifting environment for students to learn. Her lab requires a lot of group projects which can be difficult when some lab mates don't participate well. Expect an immense amount of work to pass.
Do NOT take this class if you have trouble with stress management. With all the papers, assignments, homework, and hours of classes you will barely have time to study for her tests (or any other classes) while having a life of your own. She absolutely sets up her students for failure at almost every corner. I have NEVER been so defeated.
Dr B. is a horrible professor who unfortunately takes very interesting material, and makes it impossible to appreciate. The course is doable, but requires an obscene amount of work for an undergrad class. In order to really have a chance of getting an A in the course, you need to make sure it is your only course being taken.
Do not take this class if you have ANY other responsibilities like a job or other classes. This class will literally suck the life out of you and take up 200% of your time. If you are willing to make your whole life revolve around this class for a few months, then Dr B. is a great teacher, but just do yourself a favor and take it at a different cc
This class is just not it! You can learn the amazing information from Khan academy with no stress. Save your health and money and do not take this class with her its not worth all she puts you through.
It's sad that Dr b became a bad teacher over the years from teaching at UC Santa Cruz to sbcc. It's not surprising she would get more bad reviews down the line after her semester ends. Who knows how the future will be with her teaching there. As far as I can see it doesn't look good since she's a reason why so many bios students don't transfer.
I would say this is by far the hardest and most time consuming class I've ever taken. While Dr. B is like no other, she really does set you up for succeeding... but ONLY if you have the time to do so. I quit my job for this class and it paid off but at the price of a few months with no life outside of it. I learned more than I could imagine though.
Dr. B is simply not a good professor unless youre looking for a selfish ego centered professor that constantly degrades you through any task you complete and any opportunity provided. She has absolutely no mercy (or professionalism/competence) in-terms of how she treats her students and how she chooses to teach the class.
Took her class in Spring 2020 and still consider this course to be the toughest I've ever had in my academic career. It was unnecessarily difficult for a lower division class. Even after transferring, I have yet to have one as difficult as this. While I get that she was trying to prepare us for UC courses, it definitely didn't need to be this harsh
Took her class online Im at a UC now and I have not had a single class thats half as rigorous or demanding as this one. Dont be intimidated or discouraged, this class or her rules are not realistic like AT ALLL.
This class is really difficult, but not impossible to pass, it will take most of your time and requires great time management to finish assignments and have time to study. You have to work with other students in lab, so make sure you can work with others. Dr. B can seem condescending, but she really wants students to find the answer themselves.
This class is not worth it to drop ur gpa for. Take it elsewhere with a fair amount of work and dedication. She cant abide by her own standards.
None of my professors were as harsh as Dr B. after transferring. Dr B only cares to prove that her class is the hardest and won't make it any easier to those that are struggling with their mental health. The negative reviews are extremely true and it is shocking/disappointing to see how she is qualified to be a professor.
Dr. B is very stingy with points. This class is the toughest class I have taken and the commitment expectations are impossible. Neither the grading nor deadlines are fair or well planned. This is not a UC system preparation class, its more of a graduate school type of class.
This class prepared me exceptionally well for 4 of the courses I have taken at UCSD, where I have received the highest score in 3 of my midterms. Its a tough class; make sure you have good time management. But if you put in the effort you will do great. Plus, the material is really interesting. Everyone hating here was being lazy at CC, TBH
Is her class hard? Yes. Is there a lot of work? Yes! But...did I learn a lot? YES!! Take it from me--I transferred into a biology major at UC Berkeley. I can say with 100% certainty that her class TOTALLY prepared me for this! Even more, Dr. B is a wonderful, personable and passionate human! Excellent teacher, excellent course.
I came into this class scared about the reviews, but came out having learned so much, and being so grateful for having met Dr. B! Not going to lie, it is a hard class, with lots of work, and you have to be willing to put in the work. You will learn more than in any other class, and dive deep into a class that will prepare you for upper-division!
Bio103 is definitely a very tough class and Dr.B is a pretty tough teacher, but this class has truly prepared me so much and taught me how to study and manage my time! And Dr.B’s lectures are soo good! Like watching a play! I would attend lecture and ask lots of questions! Also office hours!!
I feel an abundance amount of regret for not listening to the reviews. Life happens sometimes but in this class NOTHING can happen or be happening in your life and you just gotta be doing homework and studying 24/7 to only get an average grade that will drop your gpa. So not worth it.
This class is unnecessarily condensed, has discussion AND lab meetings besides lecture. The exams are basically you having to memorize all lecture material and rewrite them. Points are taken off right and left on exams and reports. If something is not stated as precisely as she would then it’s automatically wrong!
I was able to implement a few things that allowed me to excel in this class: 1) Set up a class chat (Discord, GroupMe, Slack); 2) Watch Khan Academy videos for extra help; 3) Review online flashcards (Quizlet, Anki) frequently; 4) Advocate for yourself by going to Dr. B when you have time; 5) Print out/Download the ppt pdfs to annotate during class
Honestly I was intimidated by the mixed reviews prior to taking this course. However, they couldn’t have been farther from the truth. Dr. B is extremely straightforward in re to her expectations and sets us up for success with useful power points, notes, and has several office hours. I would definitely not cram the night before the exams, though
Be prepared to do some outside studying for this class. That means being patient with yourself and putting in effort to watch videos online for clarification, as well as reviewing concepts at least a week before the exam. I also reviewed with a small group and we did better than average on exams. Struggling was a common thread but we did it!
im not the one to make reviews but i wanted to write one for my fav teacher. she inspired me to challenge myself and apply to reach schools. she also helped me a lot with questions i had about external research opportunities. if you take the time to know her outside of class, she’s so friendly and passionate about running and her doggos
TBH i am not the smartest but i work hard AF. when i put my mind to something, i make it a goal of mind to meet it and then some! i wanted to get all As for my last semester and i did it!!! it was rough (two jobs and full class load) but you have to COMMIT. PERIOD. i reached out to friends for help all the time they were sick of me lol
BIO 103 with Dr. B is tough but doable. The class is rigorous; you have to time-manage well and think about what other courses you take with it. If you put in time, effort, and are consistent with attendance to lecture AND utilize pal sessions, you will be fine. Dr. B is the homie and relates to students! Go to office hours and let her help you out
This class was the reason I decided to switch my major from Biology to MCDB (Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology) when applying to UCLA. I fell in love with cell biology and would definitely take this class again.
in comparison to BIO100, BIO101, and BIO102, this class def has a steep learning curve. however, it is not impossible. as a pre-med student, i try to push myself out of my comfort zone and challenge myself every day. i dedicated at least 1 hour every day to study the powerpoints and my class notes. i didnt open the book once
since i was taking 5 classes, i wasn't able to study as much for this class as i wanted to. MAKE SURE TO STUDY AT LEAST 4DAYS BEFORE THE TEST. i made the mistake of studying only the weekend prior to the test and it was horrible. other than that, professor B's grading rubric/expectations are fair and she explains concepts okay (had to use youtube)
Cell bio is not an easy subject to learn but dr B tries her best to teach us during the pandemic. I like how she uses analogies to make a difficult things more relatable to us. She gives us ppts and lecture notes. The tests are fair given that she doesn't throw in curveball questions. The concepts she spends the most on will be on the tests
I went to office hours with a lot of concerns before the tests. I have the worst anxiety and she was able to lift a huge burden of anxiety from my shoulders. i was able to do average in her class but she is very considerate of my situation and i am grateful for that. i made sure to utilize her office hours as much as possible to address my Qs
Since when do students choose not to portray a correct image of a class or a professor? This class is obv unfair for students. This isn’t a pre med class and not all students are studying to become doctors. That’s like saying all political science courses should be pre law preparing for LSAT. Just absurd!
Gonna start this off by saying I'm now in my first year of med school. Dr. B was one of the best professors I've had by far. She makes important info clear through lecture obj. and her tests are fair. Go to class, study regularly, and you'll be fine. You can't treat this like BIOL101 or 102, the material is denser and you'll need it later on in uni
I’m currently a student at ucsb studying Biology. I look back and thank this class for teaching me the basics. It made the transition to upper divs easier compared to my other ucsb transfer friends who came from different schools
I'm in PA school now and it was because of this class that I discovered I have it in me to meet my goals. Despite having 1 full time job and 4 other classes, I truly struggled most of the time with my work-school-life balance. The grading is timely, feedback is constructive, and exams were justifiable. The work load is a lot tho
Professor Betancourt is a good lecturer. She does her best to do a mixture of chalk drawings/notes with powerpoints. She makes herself accessible outside of class via email and office hours.
Dr.B is one of the realist teachers I have ever had. She doesn’t baby you like most of the professors do at sbcc, but expects the best of you because she truly believes you can do it. I think a lot of student complain about her/the class because every single teacher they have ever had babies them, but her lectures are so clear and OH help so much
Dr. B gets a bad rap bc many students don't put in the effort to get the grade they want or aren't cut out for higher-level bio courses. Her class is hard but she is more than fair and willing to help! She cares about her students and prepared me for a microbiology degree at a 4 year. Study, ask questions, go to office hours, and get to know her!!
Dr B is considerate, caring, and courteous. How could you not like her as a teacher? I was scared about the reviews but they couldn't be farther from the truth (most people who wrote them either hated the class or loved it--there is no in between). There is no other class that I loved more.
Seriously…compared to the UCs this class is even better than most of my classes. Writing this as a student at UC Davis, I wish I didn’t take this class and the other bio classes for granted. It’s so jam packed with important information that will follow you for LIFE: central dogma, transcription, translation, and glycolysis.
Love this class
Is there a lot of work? Yes, but fortunately BIO 101 and BIO 102 prepared me for the study life. I studied 2 hours for every 1 hour of lecture outside of class and it was enough for me. I did my best and that’s all that matters :)
Is there a lot of work? Yes, but unfortunately BIO 103 didn't prepared me. I studied 2 hours for every 1 hour of lecture outside of class and it was wasn't enough for me. I tried my best and you can still fail. :-(
I can say hands down the best teacher from SBCC. Jennifer should have the honor of the greatest teacher to ever teach this class. This is by far my favorite class that I ever took in my life. I have an A in her class. This class truly prepares students to the next level. However there's one problem. She's not the best teacher around.
You rock Dr B! Thanks for being you
A challenging but amazing professor! She truly cares and wants her students to excel. One of the best professors I’ve ever had.
Love this class. It’s not my favorite subject. Can’t wait to learn more about this field when I transfer next fall at UC Davis.
Definitely took a lot of notes in this class and looked over them at the end of every week to help improve my grades in this course. It was challenging but i’m always down for a challenge
Quite literally the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. Her grading requirements are BEYOND anything realistic, and I'm writing this a year out from taking this course at a UC school and can wholeheartedly say no professor I've had since transferring had the nerve to be as intense as she was. Save yourself the tears and RUN.
Inspiring and respectable in a lot of ways but extremely demanding! She is kind and fun as a person but not as an instructor. She knows that her students invest 25-35hr a week on her class but won't change that. Tried to push me to work hard but pushed me over the edge instead. Gave me Stockholm syndrome bc. she's admirable but crushed me mentally.
Dr. B really cares about here students success and it shows when you take the time to meet with her in office hours. lectures tell you everything that you need to know for the exam, so if you study the lecture notes you will get a high grade. Labs are nice, very focused and have clear expectations. Definitely work hard, it WILL pay off.
The workload is simply unnecessary. Save your time.
I'm at a UC now, in the bio field, and I have not had a single professor who's expectations is even half of hers. This class is insanely insane! Take this class elsewhere, even if you're a pre-med student, because it's too condensed and demanding, with a very high chance of hurting your gpa, and you can learn all the information from khan academy.
Good teacher, but understand that she expects your full commitment to this class and its heavy workload. Don't fall behind, and always communicate with your teammates early. Study lecture material before class, and then take her spoken words as notes. Do DQs as early as possible. Use khan academy. This will prepare you for upper-div classes.
Easily the toughest class that I have ever taken. The papers and projects are worth quite a bit and the homework was not always the clearest. But, I genuinely feel like I learned so much in this class and I value the feedback she gave on my scientific writing. You need to be prepared for a lot of work but it is not impossible! You got this!
Dr. B is actually a nice person and super invested in Cell and Mol Bio and you can tell by how she teaches. She gives lots of resources, but the class is insane. There is way more work than there needs to be in the lab, and it can mentally drain you. None the less super interesting class, and I enjoyed myself. Also, don't worry, she mellows out ;)
Dr. B knows the material--she has a PhD + is teaching VERY intro cell&molec + it's a 5 unit class. If you're serious about MD, PA, grad research, etc, this is good practice for putting in work and seeing your results. TOUGH class but HW is essentially free points + most answers are in lecture. Key is to not be easily intimidated + go to OH's
After transfering to UCLA and being here for 2 year now, now almost having my bachelor's in biochemistry. I realized that Dr.B class has potenial to be good, but is hard for all the wrong reason. And it still the hardest class I have taken because of the strict guideline for everything less from grammar to format.Take this class at another school.
It's been a year since I have taken Dr. B's class, I've transferred, and am now assisting in biochem research. I have to say that she is preparing you so well for transfer. As much as her class is challenging, I have to say that I would be so lost if it wasn't for her. Her labs and lectures will come in handy if you want to do Bio/Biochem.
As someone who transferred and is now a Biology MS student, this is still the toughest class I've ever taken in college. Looking back now, this insane difficulty was pointless! Only reason you'd "need" this class is if you don't plan on taking upper-divs after you transfer, through which you'd be taught the same material by better profs anyways...
This course is designed to be challenging for a reason, but simply just put in the effort. Dr. B is tough but just because she doesn't spoon feed points that does not make her a bad person. I had the best time in her class, her labs are fun and she's just amazing. she's not a stone cold robot and do not be intimidated by the other reviews.
Dr B has a very rigorous course but as long as you put effort into it, you can absolutely pass. She seems intimidating at first but she is human and truly does want all her students to do their best. Her labs are the BEST.
The class is hard, you need to treat it like a job. I averaged over 95% on all four exams and got 100% on the homework and still got an A- because my choice in lab partners was terrible. Don't make the same mistake.
The grading is intense and focuses more on endurance than on promoting curiosity and independent thinking. But remember, if you're aiming for a career in science, don't be discouraged by this. Your grades here won't determine your success in academia or beyond.
Very intense class. If you plan on taking this class DONT take any other 5 unit courses it with because chances are you will fail both classes since this class gives a huge sum of work.
She clearly still writes the good reviews on here, how sad. It's been years since I last had her, and I look back, seeing many students having a problem with her STILL! I'm not surprised. Please do yourself a favor, and find another prof at another city college if needed. She will not believe in you! Trust me, she told me she didn't believe in me
This was no doubt the most unnecessarily difficult course I have ever taken, but this is good in the sense that every course after this is rather easy. Nonetheless, Dr. B is particularly pedantic and didactic; not appropriate for a lower division biology course. If you lack discipline, this course will get you it quickly.
Coming here from the future to let ya'll know to NOT give up on Bio! UCs are so much easier with 1/12th of the work/studying needed with professors who care very much about you and your success. They also do grade curves! Even as a research assistant, they won't let you do what she makes you do in lab work. Take this on its own or elsewhere.
Avoid Dr. B; this professor is unrealistic. The lecture content, though challenging, is manageable. However, the absurd workload makes the class excessively difficult. Many students struggle to barely pass despite putting extreme effort on it. This class does break people mentally, do not take it with other 5.0 credit class , your gpa will suffer
This class is difficult but definitely worth doing. It one of the few classes where I have felt like I am really learning stuff that I will use in my career. Yes, it is one of the more challenging classes for a bio major but if you apply yourself you can be successful in this course. I am proud of what accomplished and would take it again!
Class would be amazing if the labs were different. You do have to learn to work in teams if you want a career in stem, but at this stage in education there is too much variation in work ethic and ability. It hurts good students the most. Lecture wise it feels like an easier upper div class at a UC. I enjoy lecture and discussion actually.
Dr. B is disciplined. She made me learn stuff good. I like the labs, but I don't like my labmates. She does a great job.
This class is difficult but definitely not worth doing. It one of the few classes where I have felt like I am not really learning stuff. Yes, it is one of the more challenging classes for a bio majors. I am disgusted of the professor and would never take it again!
Jennifer is undisciplined. She made us learn hard stuff. I dislike the labs & I think she does a BAD job.
I thought this class would be worse than it is. Well, it is. This class has a lot of unnecessary work & material. This class is an ABSOLUTE JOKE. Working with incompetent students in labs who don't cooperate in 5 lab assignments. If this is harder than upper division then I'm out. My advice take a different cell bio at another college.
Really unfortunate that this is the only Cell Bio class available at SBCC. Dr. B is a horrible professor. Having to drop this class messed up my chances of getting into my dream school and not because of the lecture content- it was her ridiculous amount of assignments due every week that's NOT possible if a student is taking other classes.
I used to procrastinate, turn in hw late + failed 1 yr over COVID, so if I have over a 100% while taking 31 units, so can you. This class has LOTS of hw, but its completely doable (esp if u pick lab partners that contribute. do NOT make my mistake. writing reports urself is NOT fun), + xtra credit is built in. Put in effort, she will notice that.
Dr. B expects a lot from her students, but the course is not impossible: easier with good lab mates; definitely easier if you're invested in the material. Easily the most fascinating laboratory I have ever participated in. Def felt like I was on a treadmill. My POV: should have spent more time studying for exams than doing DQ's.
This class has LOTS of ridiculous hw, but its impossible (esp if u pick the wrong lab partners that doesn't contribute. Do NOT take this class. Jennifer is not a fun techer to take. Put in effort to take another cell bio class.
This is the hardest bio class and all the students rightfully complain about Jennifer's incompetence. Either she doesn't care or hates her job. If you cant handle the loaded unrealistic work then take another smarter proof than her. Dr. B is discouragement, nonrational, and uncaring. I would have taken the class with any other professor.
Jennifer expects less from her students, but the course is impossible: harder in lab; definitely harder with the material. Easily the most boring laboratory I have ever participated in. Def felt like I was watching paint dry. My POV: should have spent finding a real prof than wasting time on this torture class.
This class could be extremely interesting but the combination of a huge ego, stubborness and unrealistic expectations from the instructor transform this in a tramautic experience for many .Dr.B is extremely knowledgeable in the field , but she's completely out of touch with the reality of her course and how it impacting students.
It is really sad to see how someone as Dr.B can have so much knowledge but also being completely disconnected with the vast majority of the students in her course. It really seems that she's completely oblivious of how she acts & interacts with other students (rude and intimidating) while also setting standards that are out of reality.
I've scored a 100% on the MCAT bio/biochem practice sections every freaking time. If you're pre-med I HIGHLY recommend you spend double-time on this class. Pretend its MCAT prep, that's how much these concepts will stick with you, and how often these concepts will show up. After taking this class, answering those questions will feel instinctual.
I've scored an F on my MCAT. If you're pre-med I HIGHLY DONT recommend you spending any time on this class. Jennifer will not prep you for any kind of MCAT or anything. After taking this class you'll realize how bad Jennifer is as a teacher & a person at self. If you want an adequate cell bio teacher take another college.
One of the hardest yet most rewarding classes ever. She gives you everything you need to succeed, you just need to be detailed in your work & following instx. You don't need to read the txtbook, but if you want to succeed GO TO CLASS! & participate, I swear it will help you. & go to office hours- she loves to see students putting in the effort.
One of the most unsatisfying classes you'll ever take. She doesn't give you everything to know to succeed, you just need to find another cell bio teacher. Textbooks are useless but the sad part about this class is even participating in not enough to pass. Don't bother going to here office cause she HATES seeing students with her CHILD BEHAVIOR.
This class is no walk in the park, but with the right study tools like unstuck AI, it's manageable. The labs can be tedious, but the professor makes an effort to engage students. Worth taking if you're interested in the material, but be prepared to put in the work.
Choose lab group wisely!! If you don't you may end up doing all the work yourself (happened to me). There is a lot of discussion presenting, so make sure you're comfortable being grilled on the spot. The tests are very similar to practice tests tutors send out. Focus on memorizing!
I have never taken a class, anywhere that has such an insanely high work load. She thinks it's reasonable for you to drop your other classes just to focus on hers. Had I not dropped her class I wouldn't have gotten into UCSB. I took molecular/cell bio there after transfer and it was much easier. This class is absolutely insane. AVOID at all costs.
Dr. B is everything a professor should be—profoundly knowledgeable and inspiring. Yes, the class is challenging and time-consuming but incredibly rewarding. She teaches exactly what she wants to see on exams and in my opinion, makes success attainable. If you're passionate about biology and willing to work, she'll deepen your love for the field.
Dr. B is everything a professor should not be-profoundly childish & uninspiring. Yes, the class is challenging but not in a fair way She doesn't teaches exactly what she wants to see on exams and in my opinion, makes success unattainable. If you're passionate about biology and willing to work, DO NOT TAKE HERE.
Dr. B prepared me for upper division and then some. Her class was moderately difficult but endlessly enriching. Her lectures are perfectly organized, and they're what my current university professors should be striving for. I've learned far more from this class than anything from university so far. I'm very thankful to have had Dr. B as a professor
Dr. B is the most organized and inspiring professor I've had. She clearly lays out what expected as well as offers you plenty of time to clarify. Her assignments seems long but they truly deepen your understanding for the subject(interest if you have any). Class never felt like a tense or toxic environment. Dr. B made me better at studying
I respect Dr. B and I learned a lot but this class was the hardest class I have ever taken. The only way to pass is to get a good lab group where everyone wants an A, turn in EVERY assignment (there's a LOT) do your note card early, and never skip tutoring, lecture or lab. This class alone should be worth 10 credits. Take it by itself if you can.
A petition called for her removal in spring ‘20 (pre-tenure) yet, she is still here. The BioDep Chair/Dean should be held accountable for years of inaction. It has been too many years w/o repercussions. Check her UCSC reviews, NO character dev since then. A disgrace that an overwhelming amount of students experiences were not taken into account.
Dr. B doesn't just fail to inspire; she actively drains the passion that quality profs cultivate. If another prof taught this course, I believe I'd have loved lec+lab. The workload is brutal if this were your only class; with a full load you'll drown. Many capable people fought to maintain their grade only to barely scrape by, if pass at all. RUN
Interacting with this woman was like dealing with a bipolar parent. You never knew which “Dr. B” you were going to get. Condescending, constantly overstimulated, smiley to some but instantly rude and an obvious disdain/ lack of patience for others. I cannot believe this type of behavior is permitted in 2025.
I have never worked so hard in a class and it feel so thankless. The lecture and lab should be two different components since you need to pass them individually. Prepare for it like a 10 unit class imo. Also I got a 79.96% (796.5 points) -800 is a B… It's the first C on my college transcript in the last 5 years. It hurt. GL!
Most I've ever had to work in a class. DO NOT recommend taking with other STEM classes. Toughest prof you'll meet but is inspiring and prepares you for ANY future classes. The class itself added to my love for bio, but I didn't get to enjoy any of it bc of her. Almost impossible A, easy to pass if you just do the work. I love and hate her so much.
Has had many neg. reviews deleted from the past few months-image>nontoxic learning environment. No exag. that 9/10 students hated her, those who don't have Stockholm syndrome. Faux “warm" act flips to BPD style rage. Exams riddled w trick Qs designed to confuse rather than assess true understanding, excessive busywork made it hard for wrong reasons
I got an A in this class, but not because I “became a better scientist” or whatever she claims the goal is. It's mostly just copying dense material onto notecards and hoping the formatting doesn't annoy her. You can skip all lectures and still do fine if you figure out her very specific grading quirks. It's mindless busy work rather than learning.
"Exams riddled w trick Qs designed to confuse rather than assess true understanding, excessive busywork made it hard for wrong reasons." Totally agree—aren't we all here to learn, or some of us are meant t be filtered out by not having ability to tolerate a power abuser? People work in cell bio later will think this is a joke.
Tragic she is the only teacher for part three of a three part biology series. I already finished calculus and chemistry with As and Bs and even got accepted at uc as a biology major, but her class was so bad I changed my major and now have another year at cc before I can transfer. Subject should have been good, but she was impossible to please.
The professor is extremely strict with rules, sometimes in ways that feel discouraging. More understanding and flexibility would help create a better learning environment. The little moments do matter.
Should be 8 credits. One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. She expects a lot out of her students and gets unnecessarily angry when we can't keep up. She is "trying something new" this year, where the students teach themselves instead of her teaching us. Why am I paying hundreds of dollars for a course where I teach myself the material?
Never missed a single lecture. Attended almost every tutoring session. If you don't go to tutoring, you will fail. I love her lectures, but she is an incredibly tough grader and can be snappy/unprofessional to students. She was never rude to me, but seeing how she interacted with other students made me feel sick. When she isn't evil, she is great.
DONT TAKE WITH OCHEM! Harder than Ochem, takes over your life if you want to do well. Consider that when you make your schedule. Only option at CC (unless you take it at Ventura) so get ready to grind. I wish I hadn't gone in expecting Dr B would be awful, it just stressed me out more. Shes a great lecturer but has a short fuse sometimes
should've been 2 separate classes. final grade is based off points you get in lecture and in lab. overall i had a C. but i was 2 POINTS OFF FROM THE LECTURE PASSING GRADE SO I GET AN F. this is gonna tank my GPA. she will not round up. hardest class i've ever taken. also group projects are very hard to work in, LOTSS OF ARGUMENTS…
dr b liked having off topic convos w students to come off as nice and friendly, but in class and during discussions, she is not afraid to grill you on if ur wrong. she embarrasses people in front of the whole class. once told me to use my brain and i will never forget that. it mentally effects so many students. she needs to do better.
Great lectures brings bio to life, req TIME and effort. Communicates DISRESPECTFULLY w/ her students in class- unprofessional. Doesnt facilitate an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. Show up prepared to lab. You can do it.
I went into this class prepared to ignore everything I had heard about her, but the negative reviews are all true. Here are some words of advice: Don't let her get to you. It's her not you. A good lab group matters. DO NOT take with OCHEM if you can avoid it. It will be hard, but if you keep your head down and do your work you will survive.
