little to no talking allowed during class-moves pretty fast-lots of work
Great class. She's very helpful.
wonderful class, fun and interesting if you get involved
Jennifer is one of the best teadhers tht I have ever had. I strongy reccomend her class to anyone.
great teacher and awesome class. she really makes you feel comfortable in developing your signing skills and in participating. great teaching method. tests are easy. you'll learn basic signing and have fun doing it.
This was one of the worst teachers I have had at Grossmont. She wasn't helpful, didn't review the vocab. and just expected us to know it from the little picture. Word to the wise, don't take her
very relaxed, easy going, simple tests
Great teacher! Very helpful. Fun class.
Jennifer is a great teacher! Her tests are straight forward and fairly easy, just watch the video and read the assigned Deaf person and you'll do fine. She's clear and helpful.
great teacher, cares about the students and wants you to succeed
BEST TEACHER!!!Jennifer was awesome. she helped so much and in response to another rating of course she doesn't allow you to talk it would be too easy that way.
great teacher!!! not only did i learn a lot i also had fun in the class.
This was one of the best classes I've ever taken. Jennifer made it a lot of fun and I highly recommend her!
awsome teacher. she loves the language and wants you to love it as well. If you study and pay attention in class you will pass.
The class is easy, but this lady sucks. She is mean, just plain old mean. But her class is really easy, if you can deal with a witchy prof for an easy A. take her class
i look forward to her class every week. she makes asl fun and interesting
She is such a hardd grader!Like someone would understand everything but when it comes to the test, the person rephrase the sentence that she signs a little different than what she expects.there goes half of your grade!I aced asl 120 but probably will get a C in this class.AVOID carmean if possible!
Jennifer is awesome, her class is fun and she makes it a welcoming enviornment. She is good at picking up on little things people do when they don't understand something and she does all she can til you understand what she is talking about. She is easy to talk to and it was just a VERY enjoyable class. I totally recommend her.
She is a great teacher. Her class was so fun!
A great introduction class. She prepares her students well for the next level. Her class is fun and the tests are easy. She is the department chair and is accessible. Sweet personality.
This class was very enjoyable. She is a great teacher and for one of the comments left she is obviously going to be ****y if you start talking its ASL, American Sign Language your not suppose to talk because if you do you wont learn as much. Great teacher I highly recommend her class.
Jennifer was awesome! She was very helpful and is a very sweet lady. I definately reccomend her class! I just wish she was teaching ASL III!
Shes an awesome teacher, very clear and explains everything in detail if u dont understand. I've learned a lot in both sign language 1 and 2

She favors people in the class!!! Has A type of presonality where she is really nice but tries to hard. Thinks she is funny, but isn't. Don't disagree whith her on anything.
best teacher... made it fun very clear... i wish she taught semester 3
Great teacher!
Very interesting and a great instructor
Her class was very fun! She's very sweet, and kind:-) I'd love to take her class again! Thanks Jennifer!
great teacher. very nice if you don't disrespect her or talk in class. reviews vocab each morning so if u miss a class u can catch up. a lot of fun activites to help learn. easy tests if you study signs and watch video because she uses sentences from it. Turn in all hmwk, read texts, you'll have an A in class and Tests.
Jennifer is a great teacher. This class was alot of fun. Just show up everyday and do the work. Alot of games and fun activities are used in her teaching. This class is so fun, not a typical college class with a long boring lecture. Take this class. I promise you'll love it.
Jennifer is an awesome teacher. She is very sweet and caring. Her teaching style is very clear and she makes the class fun. Memorize the signs and study for tests and you'll get an A easily. I highly recommend her.
i had Carmean for ASL 1 and she was Amazing!!! she made it not only easy but fun! im happy to say i have her agen this year. i cant wait for my class to start, 35min!!!
Jennifer is such a cool teacher. She is very helpful and she makes class fun and interesting. She is pretty strict when it comes to attendance though, but that's just because it is a visual and interactive course and you need to be there in order to really learn the material. As long as you go to class and learn the new signs, you'll do well.
This class was great and she had a good way of teaching she students sign that made everybody remember it. Grades were based on many things so if you do bad on one test or one thing it will not ruin you in the class, however attendence is a HUGE part of your grade. I would recommend taking her for sign language.
Great teacher! Very funny! You learn in many different ways. Attendance is a must! You have to have fun with it in order to learn the signs. HW is easy and the tests aren't bad. There are many factors in your grade so one screw up won't kill ya. Easy A!
Jennifer is a wonderful ASL teacher! Very funny, full of stories, and willing to work with you if you don't understand something. MUST attend class, as you learn a bunch of new signs everyday. She reviews and repeats constantly, which is great. Definitely take her, you'll learn more than you imagined and enjoy it immensely!
Mrs. Carmean is very helpful and makes SURE your signing is right! Even if you don't wish to be called on or participates, she will still pick on you to make sure you and the rest of the class are on the same page. She is very creative with her class lessons and makes the class enjoyable. She makes things fun with her creative lessons and enthus.
Prof. Carmean taught me a lot. However, I found her to be somewhat short tempered. She seemed to hold grudges too; One screw up and she's angry with you for the rest of the semester. She does have a great teaching method, and so long as you work hard you'll do well in the class. I recommend her class, but be on your best behavior!
I LOVED HER CLASS! fun games and is a great teacher! class is easy.. practice and remember the signs! DONT MISS CLASS.. you will be lost
She is a great teacher. Always has new activities to learn signs and practice them with classmates. She is a little intimidating because she strives for perfection, which she should teaching a new language. She is also a hard grader, but if you go to class, you'll learn everything you need to know.
Mrs. Carmean is a great teacher. She has a GREAT teaching style, very interactive. Attendance is a MUST! also if you are looking for a class to "hide" in, this is NOT for you! I highly reccomend her :)
Professor Carmean is AMAZING! She has a great love for the Deaf community and has a great way of teaching us about it. Little homework, Must attend class to understand signs, and she goes over tests beforehand!!!! ***Also: if you don't get something she will explain it until you do! Just know you have to be a little social in this class. TAKE IT!
Very easy to understand and very helpful. She is very funny and likes to keep a comfortable laid back classroom, besides texting and not paying attention; but what else do you expect in an ASL class? Doesn't do anything that isn't helpful, taking her again for an additional ASL 2 class next semester.
She is a great teacher and she wants you to pass. Very easy class!!! Must go to class though, you can not miss a class! She is funny and laid back! LOve her!
She is by far the best foreign language teacher I've ever had. She's fun, laid back and very easy to talk to if you don't understand something. You must attend every class or you will miss vital information and signs. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
She is the BEST! Very enjoyable class! Take this teacher, she is very helpful, funny and makes use of the entire class period.
Great prof best class I've had. Enjoyed class, learned a lot she was very clear has a good sense of humor. Recommended!!!!!
ive been in jennifers class for asl 1 and 2 she is an awesome person. loves the language made me love it. her tests were easy the workload isn't bad. no talking in class well duh is sign language ! I wish she was able to teacher 3 and 4 I'd finish it with ! honestly one of the best teachers I've had it's easy to connect with her. shes also patient !
Great teacher, she is very helpful and connects with the students well. The homework wasn't bad, and her teaching style is unique. I'm glad i took her class!
Jennifer is a very helpful teacher, and great at her job! However she doesn't accept bs.. She can tell if your not serious about the class. It's not an "easy a" there is homework every week and you must attend class or you will miss out on a ton of info! But it was very fun and shes a super helpful teacher.
Attendance is a must, her actual tests are hard. She will repeat sentences twice, but often does them slightly different both times. If you miss class, you miss alot. Fun games!!! but ehh.
Jennifer Carmean is one of my favorite teachers at Grossmont! She is very helpful in all of her ASL classes and really loves teaching. She got me very interested in Sign Language! I would highly recommend her to everybody interested in a language! <3
Pretty good professor. Helps you understand the material, even though she can have an attitude. Not extremely approachable, but you can ask her something if you absolutely need to. Fun class activities. Don't miss a class, you'll really regret it.
Jennifer is an amazing teacher. I absoutetly love her and her teaching methods. She's very approachable and nice. She will make sure you understand the material and make sure you have fun while doing so. I look forward to taking another ASL class from her very soon.
She recommended a tutor that was actually deaf...she corrected several of Jennifer's signs. I was graded down for using the correct sign language. Her presentation grading is extremely inconsistent. Someone who signs well can get the same grade as another that obviously didn't practice! I compared several people's grades.
Another semester of ASL classes with Jennifer and she hasn't let me down yet! AMAZING teacher, cannot stop singing her praises. I wished she taught ASL 3 and 4. You won't be dissapointed if you take her class. Easy to understand, and she makes ASL FUN!
I would have to say she is a difficult grader, counts attendance toward you very harshly. Her tests are somewhat had and does not sign every sign the same way! There are some sign that have to ways. She uses both. I love her class though.
Jennifer is a very organized professor with a ton of patience. Attendance does count towards your grade. Homework is checked for accuracy. She can seem a bit standoff-ish, but I can't deny that I learned a lot. At the end of the day I don't regret taking Jennifer, I wish I could take her again.
Don't miss class. Good at giving clarification at the end of the day, if you stay to ask. Classes are silent, only ASL, until the last fifteen minutes. Pretty easy if you pay attention.
Jennifer is great and I would recommend anyone interested in ASL to take her. She is very clear, she doesn't sign too quickly and she teaches us a lot about deaf culture and encourages us to be more involved! I actually look forward to going to her class!
She is great. If you're interested in American Sign Language, you should take her class!!
I could go on and on. Jennifer was SUCH A great teacher. I loved her class and her teaching style. Funny things tend to happen in that class, and it always brightened up my day. Homework is "graded" so make sure you do it to get credit, it's usually pretty easy. Just wait until you play the Elephant game. LOL
I didn't know what to expect for the course (Finger Spelling), but Jennifer made it a lot of fun. The lessons were planned and I didn't feel there was any "fluff" or worthless information. Overall I enjoyed the course and Jennifer very much! FYI: book was tough to get ahold of bc the book store didn't have enough and it's a less-common ASL book.
Jennifer is very passionate about ASL. She wants her students to succeed so that they are prepared to communicate with deaf people in their daily lives. If you miss out on a lecture then it can be difficult to catch up. The tests are in-depth and test you on almost everything you learned in that unit. Overall she is fantastic but she won't go easy.
Jennifer is an amazing teacher. Her ability to teach ASL through immersion is fun and practical for learning a new language. The Signing Naturally textbook is required WITH DISKS, otherwise you'll never be able to complete the homework. I'd advise you form a study group with the other students. Practicing with others helps AL WHOLE LOT. :)
Great teacher. Tests in the class are pretty difficult but her teaching ability is great.
She is a nice, approachable woman and great professor. The tests can be pretty hard, but she gives study guides for all the tests (and quizzes) which is nice. Homework assignments due almost every class session, but it's just simple workbook stuff. She creates a welcoming environment to learn ASL in, and the class is fun and interesting.
I really enjoyed this class. I took this class in summer school and there was definitely a lot of work. Prof. Carmean cares about the success of her students and offers great feedback. Would definitely take another/different class of hers in the future.
Professor Carmean: She's the best! Was having a really difficult time in her class and she went over and above to provide me with assistance. Really wants you to learn the material. Very supportive and caring of the students. Would definitely take another class of hers.
Carmean is amazing. She's hearing. Her lectures are all signed, and no talking from the students whatsoever. Get the book with the disks, study the assigned pages, practive vocab with disks, and GET A STUDY PARTNER STAT! (I CANNOT EMPHASIZE HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS). Her tests are signed and written parts. She signs twice, you write signedpart down.
She is a pretty great professor except for one thingshe excpects A LOT for beginning ASL students. Be prepared to work hard. The last 3 weeks of class were especially overwhelmingunit test, then a presentation, then a cumulative final, all in a row. That being said, her teaching methods keep the material engaging and if you work hard youll pass.
You will learn so much!
She is so sweet and really seems to care about her students! She is great at responding back to emails in a timely manner and is always willing to help. If you are thinking about taking ASL I highly recommend her as a teacher, assignments were very clear and the class was well structured.
Another language is already difficult, but language thats unspoken... oh boy. Jennifer made this class so much fun and extremely interesting. DONT MISS CLASS. you learn new vocabulary every class session and its so hard to play catch-up. If you ask a lot of questions, participate heavily, and take in the language you should have a good time.
I started off the semester not liking her. However, after a couple of weeks you start to realize that she is a very good ASL teacher. I always heard about the other ASL class being easier and didn't do as much work as us. However, I learned sooo much about the deaf community and culture along with ASL that I will remember for a long time.
I loved taking her class. She kept everyone engaged. It was an easy A. If you take this class you are only allowed to skip or not go twice before she drops you from the class. take notes, go to every lecture, and pay attention, you should do fine.
Professor Carmean is an entertaining teacher. She is not only open about herself but takes great interest in her students and wants each one to do well.
Amazing Americans Sign Language teacher. I took her short term course and it was quite difficult only because it was short term but it was manageable. She was very helpful in feedback. I love ASL!
She is approachable/easy to talk to. Half the class time there is no talking you can only sign. She starts out slow and speeds up as the semester goes on. For her midterm you have to sign in front of her no one else is usually in the room but for the final there there is a power point presentation and you do have to sign in front of the class.
Would highly recommend taking her class on campus instead of online, like I did. She lectures heavy. Her grading is very clear and if you ever need help with something specific, she doesn't fail to remind you that she's here for you. If you're taking it online, get ready to partner up with someone and to record yourself! She's pretty amazing.
Professor Carmean was the BEST professor in grossmont. Shes clear and straightforward. She did a lot of fun activities in class. Shes a little fast at first but you get the hang of it. Beware she picks on you and you have to sign in front of the class.
Jennifer was an amazing professor and super understanding even through the pandemic. she really worked with her students through it and still managed to teach very effectively. She will walk you through any questions you may have . super sweet lady. 100% would take again.
Professor Carmean is AMAZING! She is one of the most caring professors and best one I have ever taken a class with. She really cares about her students success. If you need help or anything she is always willing to help. Her video lectures are so helpful and amazing. You can tell she really puts a lot of work into them.
she is a great professor. She is there for you when you need help always. The only thing is she does expect a lot from you and she gives out lots of things to do during the week but still enjoyed this class and You can tell she wants her student to pass. Very nice lady.
Professor Carmen is a good professor. She makes asl fairly easy to understand and is a great class to take online. However it is not any easy A. You have lots of work to do throughout the week but you get unlimited attempts on the homework. Be prepared to put in the work. You get to go at your own pace but you can not fall behind.
You thinking of taking ASL 120, Take her! It wasn't difficult at all. If you take the half online with her, she posts all lectures and easy homework and after GoReact hw she gives you feedback. Very hands on teacher, She is very understanding. She gives you a whole week to finish any homework and quiz are the following week, easy! Would take again!
Hands down one of the best Professors I have taken. If you are thinking about taking ASL, I highly recommend Professor J. Carmean. I do have to say, she does assign quite a bit of homework through out the week but its nothing complicated. Very easy as long as you follow her instructions, watch her videos and do your homework you will pass(:
She was a sweetheart! Answered all my emails in a timely matter and gave amazing feedback. Some of my other classmates had trouble with the class because they would never ask for help, but as long as youre not shy youll be fine. Homework can be much sometimes, so be mindful of that.
I loved this class! ASL just like any language is one you need to practice to do well in but the professor Carmen made it easy to understand and gave plenty of opportunities to do well in this class. In this class participation is a big part, so I would make sure to make time to interact with other students. I would 10/10 take this class again!
I really don't think I could ask for a better teacher. I chose her for level 1 and 2, and I would choose her for every level if i could. The way she sets up her course is very clear and and helps you get through and learn the material well. Her signing is super clear and at a good speed which makes her a great person to mirror as you learn.
She was a great teacher and showed she truest cared about the class. It was a super interesting class albeit a little difficult. If you want to learn sign language I highly recommend her. I took this class as an online class but her video lectures were insanely thorough and great to use as a study tool. 10/10
Honestly, I have fallen in love with ASL and learning new words and language structures weekly. Professor Carmean has set up the class to succeed and I 100% recommend taking her class to learn this beautiful language. All members of the Dead community deserve to feel included and the more hearing people who learn ASL, the more inclusive we will be.
Professor Carmen is super nice and caring. I learned a lot and she might me my favorite professor out there !!!!
Great professor, gives clear and thorough feedback in both text and signs so you know what you did wrong and what you need to do to improve. Lectures are dense with many signs to memorize, but is given in a way that's easy to learn and copy. Work consists of 3 live meetings, a quiz after every unit, peer interactions, and short quizzes every week.
This class was very fun and interactive. She takes signed lectures very seriously and does not speak or allow students to speak, which was super helpful. At the end of the class she would take any spoken questions in case we were confused and overall it was very informative and a good intro to ASL. I'm in ASL 3 now and I'm glad to have had her!
this class was amazing. i would highly recommend this professor if you're interested in learning ASL. she teaches a wide variety of topics surrounding Deaf culture, in addition to the language. gives great feedback and really cares about your success in the class. lots of opportunities to receive a high grade in this class.
