not too hard of a class... but her lectures make you want to gouge your eyes out with a rusty spoon
This is the second time I'm repeating this course (not from same prof). She's very nice, easy to understand. Test questions are based on lectures and text, so read text beforehand. Highly recommended.
She is very nice and clear with class requirements. Average in difficulty, but a very good lecturer.
The lectures are well organized and the material is interesting. She is very helpful and willing to listen to student concerns. I enjoyed her class.
Half way between hard and easy. Good class to take with one easy class and one hard class.
She is well organized and presents the material well, but sometimes things move a little slow and it's hard to sit through. Make sure you read the book for the tests! She tests on both lecture and stuff from the book.
This teacher likes what she's talking about and knows her stuff. Although she needs more practice talking to a large group of people. The class is very basic, go to lectures, read the chapters, take the test. do this, and you'll do fine.
I actually didn't like this class at all. I read both the text and attended every lecture and I still had a difficult time taking her tests. She needs practice speaking to large groups of people and also limited discussion (sometimes only one PP slide a day because of discussion).
good class, fairly easy
Dr. Devenport is super sweet...but she has trouble conveying her points accurately at times. She also has very little charisma, so this makes sitting through her lectures very boring.
Devenport is really nice, you have to love her. She does really good job at explaining the topics, and if you keep up in the reading and attend lecture you will definitely succeed. If your class gets ahead she lets you out early a lot. If you have to take this class for your psych major TAKE IT WITH HER!
Great prof! I loved listening to her lectures and she wasn't afraid to stop to answer a question. She uses powerpoint, so easy to take notes. Read, come to class, get a good grade! The tests were challenging, but good and she is easy to approach if you have a question(even during a test). Overall an enjoyable class and Teacher :)
I thought I aced some of the exams, but ended up getting C's on them to my surprise. She's a fairly good teacher but if you don't read the chapters 100% you are going to have a hard time in this class. If I were to take it again, I'd read each chapter twice and go through the study guides a lot more instead of at the last minute
How could you not love this woman? She has a good sense of humor, a kind and endearing manner, and a clear, enthusiastic way of conveying information. I would definitely take another class with Devenport.
She is nice but that doesnt mean shes a great prof. dont go to class just read book because she reiterates what the book says almost exactly. Exams are somewhat difficult; she asks some very obscure, unimportant, & detailed questions. I was interested & looking forward to taking this class too. do not take her if youre interested in soc psych!
She's a good professor. She knows what she's teaching, she's enthusiastic, and she's very nice. She keeps everything interesting for the class. However, you don't have to go to class if you read the book. And if you don't have to read the book if you go to class. She teaches straight from the book.
I didn't want to take this class originally, but it turned out being a pretty interesting class. We watched quite a few movie clips which was nice. We had pop quizes that were extra credit, which tipped my grade from an A- to an A.
I was worried about taking 301 with her and she has turned out to be my favorite professor I've had yet. She's EXTREMELY helpful and genuine during office hours. Take good notes during class because she tests off of that!
She seems like a nice person, but when she teaches she sounds very condescending. I was incredibly bored in class because she explained everything to death. Attendance is not needed. It was such an "easy" class, I did poorly because the content didn't seem exciting enough to study.
Class was easy, she really enjoyed what she was teaching and was great during office hours explaining the material. If I had to take this class over I would take it with her.
Nice professor but for some reason I didn't like her ...very fair grader.
Seems like a nice professor, but lectures off powerpoint and usually has boring lectures. Tests are very vague and obscure, which makes them difficult. She writes scenario questions, and one or more answers can be correct, but she wants you to pick the answer that "best" fits. If able, take this class with someone else.
Great teacher! Really made clear all of her expectations of you and was taught very well
Her lectures are pretty boring and closely match the book so attendance isn't completely necessary. Her test questions are vague and have multiple answers that can be right, but she wants you to choose the "best" answer, which was often unfair and more complicated that it should have been. This was an okay class, but get someone else if you can.
In my opinion, the tests were incredibly subjective and unfair. When I sought outside clarification she was very unhelpful. I found this class tremendously frustrating and would never take a class with her again. I attended every lecture and studied hard and still found her tests to be confusing and unfair. Would have had a 4.0 if not for her.
Avoid if you can. The tests dont measure what you learned, but if you remembered some interesting statistic she shared with us in class. I attended class attentively, read the sections in the book twice, took extensive notes, even went in for office hours, and still didnt get the A i deserved. its not clear what she expects. its and OK class.
Great proff! She is very interesting and I would reccomend her to anyone!
easy class if you go mostly everyday and take notes off her overheads. She puts them on the s drive but you can get better definitions and stuff if you go to class. textbook not really needed. 301 is alot of work but devenport made it manageable even pushing back due dates when needed
Interesting lectures. She seems kind of nervous about public speaking, which is oddly comforting. Sometimes she mixes up two words with each other during lecture, but if you're paying attention you'll know what's going on. Tests are the same as throughout the Psych department, no better or worse. Gave extra credit options when a test was too hard.
Boring class. Have to go to class for lectures as it will be in the tests. Class activities are useless in learning in materials and she's a picky grader on essay questions on tests.
She is a very kind person, and is obviously very passionate about what she does, which makes the class better! Social psych is also fun and easy, and she definitely contributes to that! I would recommend her in a heartbeat
She is an amazing professor! She makes everything easy to understand, and her tests reflect what is in the lectures. I respect her immensely, and I think everyone should take at least one of her classes.
Such a good class, she is an amazing prof and i would reccomend her to everyone interested in psych :)
a focus on jury selection, book is really interesting. you write a research proposal, then a 301 kind of paper on it, you do a short paper about ur experience attending a trial or something at the courthouse (on ur own time), & a 15min presentation on your research paper, easy peasy
JD is an alright professor. The lectures aren't all that clear and a TA teaches the laboratory section. The class grade is 25% research paper and 75% exams. There are two non-cumulative exams and one cumulative final. I recommend other professors for PSY 301.
This class was really hard but Prof Devenport was really cool and it turned out alright. Loved my TAs they were really helpful. Definitely confusing so feel free to email or visit her office hours, The class is really fundamental so learn the material. Wouldnt mind taking her again.
JD is an alright professor. The slides need more information. The professor has an MLS but needs to know more about what she teaches. It is suggested that you go to class. The grade is mostly exams with a few assignments. I recommend her for PSY 344.
Dr. Devenport knows her stuff. She does a great job answering student questions with plenty of examples. Be sure to go to class or you won't to very well on tests as powerpoints contain minimal information. There is also a mock jury which helps use what you learn in class. Overall I would recommend this class. Pretty straightforward.
Professor Devenport is really a great professor. She's involved, interesting, and fair. She brings a lot of passion for the subject to class.
Although she does not recommend the textbook for this class, many of her test questions come readings within the text. Thus far, her tests are the hardest test I've had with any professor, but if you take good notes, use office hours, attend study sessions, and read the text, you will get at least a B if not an A.
I wish I would have taken this class with someone else. Dr Devenport is VERY dry. Her lectures are boring and confusing. A lot of the concepts are easy to mix up which is what makes the subject difficult, and she doesn't know how to explain it so it makes better sense, basically her teaching is useless. I completely relied on my book for tests.
Great professor!!! Loved the class.
The tests Dr. Devenport gives can be really difficult to study for. The questions can be extremely random, like one statistic from many taken from the book about eye witness accuracy, or an essay question referring to an analogy made by her in class with no further indication of what the analogy was.
Tests usually have random questions that are from the book or a weird real life situation that doesn't make sense. I got a C on every single test we took and studied for the test weeks before. The tests seem confusing and try to trick you.
This class is so interesting and Devenport applies parts of her real life into the course material!
Dr. Devenport is pretty clear during her lectures in class, but very vague on her slides alone. Therefore, reading the slides alone at home online won't do any good. She also counts attendance during labs, so you can't miss it.
Dr. Devenport is very thorough in her lectures and is really funny! Her tests are not hard as long as you take notes during lecture and go through the study guide she provides. I really enjoyed the class and thought she did a great job teaching it.
Devenport was a very average professor in my opinion. Not bad, but didn't really stand out either. The slides online are very vague so definitely go to class or you won't pass. The test questions are a bit confusing but if you study you should do okay. She is pretty clear about what you need to know and offers in class extra credit activities.
Devenport was an amazing professor in my opinion! She is very thorough and easy to follow in her lectures, offers extra credit opportunities, and is super kind. Take her for psy 240!!
This is the most eye-opening class I have taken in my life. The content is extremely interesting and Dr. Devenport is truly passionate about teaching. This course has very little physical homework and light reading, which is nice. The final project is a mock Supreme Court, which was pretty fun. Volunteer to be a judge! It's less work!
I really liked Professor Devenport, she was humorous and was really helpful during office hours and answering students questions in class. Presentations/speed was good and made me really enjoy the class!
Dr. Devenport is one of my favorite professors at Western. You HAVE to attend class to get an A, and stopping by her office hours just to say hi can really put you in a good spot. She's the type of prof to notice extra effort when it comes to those final grades!
Jennifer was a great professor and made lectures very funny and gave a lot of examples to help you remember. You don't need to go to class but she explains the slides A LOT clearer in class so definitely worth going. Also offers in class extra credit before each exam for those who were there. she is very funny and extremely sweet!!
Dr. Devenport does not accept excuses. There is a research paper due at the end of the quarter worth 20% of your grade and it specificly says NO LATE PAPERS. I witnessed a student walk in 5 minutes late and she wouldn't accept the paper. She explains lecture material well if you go to class but the powerpoint slides are vague.
One of the best professors I've had in the psych department. Devenport really knows her stuff and was able to answer all questions. Her lecture slides are posted and extremely clear if you go to class. There is no participation/attendance, however she gave 3 or 4 short think pieces in class that could be used for extra credit (up to 6%). RECOMMEND.
Devenport is one of the most personable professors in the WWU psych department. If you make even the slightest effort to get to know her/run drafts by her, she will appreciate it, give clear feedback and probably give you an A. I plan on taking her seminar in the spring!
Jennifer is a great professor; shes constantly available, her lectures are interesting, and her tests are well balanced. This is a class that you have to study for, but she provides study guides and the powerpoints online (which helps a lot). This class doesnt require a book and you can get by without it just fine.
I really like the way that she explains everything in her lectures. She makes the class interesting and she is more than happy to give you extra explanation if needed. There is a lot of material to study though, and the final is cumulative, so do not wait to the last minute to review.
This was my favorite class at WWU so far and Devenport quickly became one of my favorite teachers. You can get by without reading the textbook but you'll want to make it to class as much as possible. Communicate with her and she'll help you succeed, she wants to help as long as you show the effort. Very knowledgeable and passionate.
What an awesome class! This was online so she had to make some changes to how she normally does this seminar but it worked out great. I don't normally like participating in discussions but the class was so open and interesting I couldn't help but get involved. Would definitely take it again. Devenport was always available for clarifications.
You won't regret taking Dr. Devenport's class as she is a very kind and understanding prof. However, her lecture pace is very slow (not ideal for me). Also, she keeps saying "blacks" instead of black people. Dr. Devenport if you're reading this people don't say that anymore you should probably stop
The class is pretty interesting but that might just be due to the topic. She usually goes over everyday in our class so don't schedule anything right after class is supposed to end. I don't think she really cares for her students but she is not a bad person. There was no exams for this class the textbook is not needed as long as you go to class.
Assignments consisted of weekly reflection papers, a legal brief assignment, a mock trial final project, and a 7 page analysis, which was sprung onto us a week before finals (we were all pretty unaware of having 2 finals, especially 2 papers that added up to 10 pages each). Jennifer is a sweet prof, but I had frustrations with the class.
The Prof is so sweet, I had her for online class. I cant speak on her upper levels but if you're looking for an easy social psych class this is the place to go. She recommends the textbook, but I don't know anyone who used it.
Dr. Devenport is the most inflexible professor I have ever had. She refused to let students take quizzes at different times due to family death, car accidents and more. Her quizzes are set up like a game show answer the question and you can't go back and you cant see what you got wrong unless you go to office hours. Avoid at all costs.
One of the sweetest profs I've ever had! She keeps it real with the content and is always up to explain more or again if you need it. Class attendance is necessary though, and she doesn't record her zooms. I would totally take her again, I learned a lot from her and actually enjoyed the lectures.
Dr. Devenport is a really nice person and this class was as interesting as it could be online during a pandemic. Graded mostly on one legal brief, a pair project for the mock supreme court, and a final paper. She's a sweet person and is not a harsh grader at all.
7 Quizzes are fairly easy, you only get 15 minutes. Reflection due every week (250 words min). 1 Research Experience that is either a paper or you attend psych talk or volunteer for psych research. The lectures aren't very engaging, and looking at slides is sometimes confusing. You could miss a few days and pass with an A. Nice person!
PSY 203 I took this class bc it was required for my major and heard it was boring. It's definitely lived up to that. You'll only enjoy if u want to be a researcher one day and want to learn every single step of countless different ways to conduct a study. Textbook and lectures are long and boring! She might be better in person or on a dif subject.
Dr.Devenport is a really kind and thoughtful professor. She provided us with extra credit opportunities a handful of times throughout the quarter in addition to our few homework assignments and 3 exams. The exams weren't too crazy, but some questions and concepts were confusing. My only regret is not going to her office hours more often!
Class was pretty easy if you showed up to class, the lectures were incredibly boring though. I was really interested in social psychology, but it ended up being reading off of PowerPoint slides.
Not my personal favorite. The topics she lectures on are made much more confusing with her inadequate definitions and poor examples. I took a stats class previously with Professor Batool and many of the concepts overlapped. I had to use my old notes from Batool's class rather than the notes from this class.
Posted slides are unhelpful to review, you must take really good notes to be able to review any material. Lectures were bafflingly slow.
Shes of no help, her lectures drone on, they dont make understanding any easier and her slides that she post give no information. She gives you chances for a better grade, dosent tell you, and then gives you the second grade (worse or not, I had a 100%, didnt know it was a retake assignment cause it stated no where, and she gave me an F)
The quizzes are incredibly difficult, be prepared to put in an insane amount of work to pass them. Also the pacing of the lectures isn't great. She's a very kind person, and helpful when I've gone to office hours, but overall not the best teacher. She said so herself, the class is designed so a majority of students get a C and I don't like that.
Attitude became increasingly rude throughout quarter Open note final all quarter, surprise changes it a week before finals "Courses aren't supposed to be designed where everyone can pass" Sneak disses to class about our collective learning speeds or test results during lectures I'll be avoiding her classes at ALL costs!!
Does not effectively communicate the course material. She will define the same concept in two different ways, give the same name to two different concepts, or simply give us incorrect information. She expects a level of understanding from her students that she can't provide and that in some areas she lacks herself.
Kind of mean :( kept saying things like, "I'm not sure why you guys aren't getting these topics, we've been going over them all quarter". Like maybe if all of the students are struggling its a you problem.
No respect for us and our time. She told us all year that the final exam would be open note and then switched it to closed note on the Sunday before dead week when we scored poorly on a quiz, then she gave us nothing but passive-aggressive comments afterwards. Seemed nice at the beginning of the quarter but was a different person by the end.
she decided that our final is on paper with limited notes last minute. If you miss a quiz, no retakes or extra credit is available. Quizzes have trick questions. She was very nice at the beginning of the quarter, toward the end she was insulting my class. She had trouble explaining concepts. Watch your grade, because there were grading errors.
overall a fine class, especially if you just need to knock out a 200-level psych class. quizzes were hard and were most of the grade. need to go to class if you want to understand the topics because the powerpoints alone aren't very helpful
Treatment of us changed halfway through the quarter when the entire class scored poorly on a quiz. She grew increasingly short with us and responded passive-aggressively to questions. Changed final expectations right before dead week (formerly open-note, open-book restricted to one page of notes). Her PSY240 class was great, but avoid her PSY203.
I enjoyed the lectures even though they could get boring at times, she explains the material pretty well but you must show up for class since the slides have little to no information even if they're posted on canvas. We had weekly quizzes and they were pretty difficult but everything including the final was open book/note!
Incredibly difficult. 1-2 difficult quizzes EVERY week. If you don't take attentive notes during class, you can't pass. The book is useless, so don't bother getting it. She admitted during the quarter that she makes her classes extra difficult so students get a C average and she'll get good ratings from the university. Very unprofessional.
she was very rude to the class by the end of the quarter. i had prior knowledge of the material, so it was okay, but her lectures could get very confusing. posted slides & textbook were useless. she changed the final format right before dead week, too. overall, a clear lack of respect for her students.
Interesting lectures, attendance is everything. Frequent open book/note quizzes and you must be in person. I advise hand writing notes then typing them post class. There were some organization issues, and some HWs where we had to share personal experiences (such as experience with being stereotyped) which felt inappropriate. Overall good professor.
Dr. Devenport is a great professor if you go to her office hours and make your presence known. Her lectures were a bit heavy, but overall quite interesting. She's very helpful during her office hours and is quick to respond to emails. She can be harsh to the class as a whole, but is overall a great professor.
I missed a good chunk of class due to a DEATH in the family and when I asked her for help, she told me to "drop the class" and shrugged her shoulders. She offered no help or empathy. All of the negative ratings in December 2023 are true (I was in that class). THANK GOD for the TA. I wouldn't have passed the class w/o his help. TA > Prof's teaching.
This class is no joke and to succeed you must bring your A-game every lecture. However, all of the tools to succeed are given to you and all that is asked in return is that you pay close attention in class. Prof. Devenport is ABSOLUTELY wonderful. She is probably the kindest teacher at Western. If you pay attention her lectures are fantastic.
Dr. Devenport over all was great. You MUST attend lecture and take very detailed notes (slides don't provide much information). I never read the text book, everything on the exams was in lecture. 3 CLOSED NOTE exams make up 75% of your grade, however she provided ample extra credit opportunities and great study guides. last exam gets 1 note page.
I found this class very difficult and really dislike her style of teaching/lecturing. The tests are hard and make up 75% of your grade.
I was in the Fall 2023 class. She changed the final from open to closed note AFTER the deadline for DAC accommodations, and gave me a zero on a quiz when I couldn't come in because I had Covid. Inflexible and unable to explain concepts in a different way if you're confused. Lectures put me to sleep, nothing helpful was on the slides.
I wouldn't take this class if there's another professor available. Not very consistent with her teaching (i.e., varying definitions, forgets some things, etc.). Two midterms and one "final" with a sheet of notes. A couple of homework assignments with a good amount of extra credit offered. Kind person outside of class, glad to be done though.
3 exams, maybe 3 homework assignments with unclear grading criteria. Her answer is the only answer she is looking for! There was no reason for this class to be as difficult as it was. Gave maybe 60% of herself/effort and expected 110% from us. I recommend taking a stats class before this one! I heard the other PSY203 professor is slightly better.
Jennifer Devenport has great lectures, but can be condescending when answering questions, and slides are on canvas. However, without going to lecture the slides make no sense. Grade is based on a 200 word reflection each week, 3 exams, and a cumulative final. Exams/final is in-person and closed note.
Dr. Devenport seems knowledgeable about her field of study but she doesn't do a good job of teaching the material to students. The class was averaging C's-C-'s on every exam which are in person and closed note. Exam questions were based off random things she says during class and the lecture slides are pretty unhelpful. Also can be condescending.
This class was great! Going to class and listening to lectures is very helpful for the tests and the weekly assignments are a great way to review material. Professor Devenport is very helpful with anything confusing and is very clear on definitions and real life scenarios for each topic.
Study guides were very poorly made. Class was extremely boring - she had too much time and talked way too much about single topics. Exam averages were always C level, but she claimed at the beginning of the quarter it was because nobody studied for her class. I studied and got a bad grade every time, got good grades in every other course.
takes her job very seriously, doesn't take any silly business which can be misinterpreted for being rude. lectures are straight forward if you take notes on what she says, not whats on the pwp. grade heavily influenced by exams and weekly reflections (easy points).
She's knowledgeable but the discussions and overall class lacked structure. We didn't learn any content during class, it was all in the readings (multiple articles and long chapters prior to every meeting). Not very understanding or accommodating... a bit condescending at times. Would not recommend unless you are very interested in psych and law.
Lectures can be dry, but Prof. Devenport provides helpful study guides. Exams are challenging, but the TA is a lifesaver. Attendance is a must. I found unstuck ai useful for test prep.
I highly recommend taking Psychology and the Law with Professor Devenport. The class is extremely heavy, but she does a wonderful and caring job when approaching these topics. She presents strengths and weaknesses in the legal system honestly and accurately, and used amazing group activities throughout the quarter to demonstrate these concepts.
Devenport is a very intelligent and kind teacher. She speaks quite soft so if you can't hear well, make sure to sit closer to her. She does spring a 6-page paper at the end of the quarter with no coaching on how to do that type of paper. That was frustrating. Otherwise, the content is pretty interesting. I'd give the course was a 6.5/10.
Professor Devenport is super kind and really tries her best for all her students. However, her lectures are extremely non-engaging and it can be very difficult to get the necessary information you need out of them. I think this stems from her being so soft spoken and relying on very bland slides. Overall an easy class, besides the bad lectures.
0 opportunities to raise your grade, the lectures didn't help at all for the exams. Beware of this class, you barely learn anything.
