Made the course really enjoyable. If you pay attention in lectures and participate in class the quizzes and exams will be easy for you! Seems to care about her students and was a great professor considering the fact that this course was all remote this year. This course is heavy in info but she made it easy to understand and link together
She is awesome! I 12/10 recommend taking the course with her if you're considering a prof. The course itself is content heavy, but she makes it enjoyable to come to class. She's willing to help if you have questions, and she is very enthusiastic about biology.
Professor Doering genuinely cares about how the students excel in her class. This class has a lot of material but she makes it interesting to learn since she is very enthusiastic with her teaching. Professor Doering puts in a lot of effort despite the fact we are online. In class participation is 5% of your grade, should not skip class.
Jennifer is honestly the best first-year bio prof ever. The course content is very heavy, but she makes lectures very fun as she is enthusiastic. Make sure you attend class because you get marks for participation in learning catalytics.
Prof Doering was the best professor i had this semester! she seems to genuinely care about her students and what she teaches. the course has A LOT of material to memorize but she tries to make it as entertaining as possible. class participation is 5% of your final grade (learning catalytics). Overall great prof!!
This is the best prof I've had so far! She was so nice and cheerful when presenting her lectures and happy to answer questions. Her notes are detailed + informative, however make sure to read the textbook because the quizzes and exams are from both material. She made biology fun even though this course is super content heavy. Definitely recommend!
Professor Doering is a great professor. She is personal and keeps in touch with her students. her lecture notes are very detailed and she is very passionate about what she teaches. The only thing I did not enjoy was that quizzes where not held during class time and where available during a set time on Friday evenings.
Professor Doering is a fun prof, who loves plants and pets, and is very caring. Her testable material includes textbook, lectures, and any assignments, so knowledge of the material is key. Her tests can be somewhat challenging with how questions are worded. Her time slot was only 50 minutes, so her lectures went by quick and had a lot of content.
I 100% recommend taking any course with Professor Doering! You can tell she genuinely cares about students and the lecture content. She responded to emails in a reasonable time. Prepares you more than enough for quizzes, assignments and exams. She gives you an outline of what to expect for each quiz and an idea of types of questions. She's the best
an amazing prof! super caring, very friendly, and not intimidating in the slightest. her tests are a bit difficult, but all the material is taught during lectures, so as long as you pay attention and study a bit, you're golden! honestly the best prof i've ever had
The plant-loving professor always considers the student's opinions and genuinely cares for her students' education. With the new online learning situation, she has done great in implementing the textbook material into a well-designed course that is directly based on the learning outcomes. Tests are fair and she replies reasonably fast via email.
Professor Doering is absolutely amazing! I took Biology 1030 as it is a pre-requisite to the higher-level courses I will be taking in the future and I was never a fan of general biology really. Always found it super broad. But Professor Doering has a way of lecturing that kept me super engaged and clearly cares for all of her students.
I had this professor for both BIOL 1020 and 1030, and she is amazing! Very kind, returns emails very fast, and explains the course content with passion. I definitely recommend taking this course with her!
Professor Doering is one of the most passionate and kindest profs you could ever ask for. Lecture content can be heavy with lots of text, but it prepares you for tests. She also truly cares about students and takes time to respond questions. I had her for both BIOL 1020 and BIOL 1030 and recommend if you take one with her take them both with her!
I was looking forward to taking this class with her after reading all her positive reviews, however I dont think her rating deserves to be as high as it is. Her marking for the quizzes was inconsistent and unfair. She responds to emails fast but found them to be unfriendly and passive aggressive. Not enough time given for the midterm and exam.
Jennifer Doering is amazing. She made me love science again, as I was starting to strongly hate it after I started taking university classes. Being a full-time student is hard and stressful. But Jennifer made it so calming and fun, she made homework seem like a fun little project. Take her class and you won't regret it, 10/10.
I never considered myself to be a plant person before taking a class with her! She's clearly very passionate about plants, and that spread to her students. The quizzes are very fair, including a mixture of multiple-choice, true/false, and written questions. She provides good diagrams and flowcharts to help you study, which were quite helpful.
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Dr. Doering, do it! You will not regret it. I took this class online. She wants her students to succeed and is available outside of class to meet and discuss study strategies. Her teaching style is very easy to understand, and the same for every class she teaches. Cannot say anything bad about her!
Her lectures clear up difficult concepts, very easy to access outside of class. She really cares for her students and wants everyone to do well, and is a very fair grader. Tests/midterms are fair, clearly outlined beforehand. Highly recommend.
overall amazing prof! Passionate, caring and full of life consistently through the term and difficulties that arise.
She's a good prof that cares about her students. Her quizzes, tests, and midterms are not too hard but you kind of have to pick the best answer which makes it difficult. She answers any questions and is very accessible. Content is heavy though so constantly review to be prepared for her assessments.
Prof Doering is an overall great professor! She explains difficult concepts very well and is extremely accessible outside class. She is also personable and engages with students. Highly recommend!
Ms. Doering is a great choice for BIOL1020! She is passionate about Biology and eager to help you outside of class. If she does not have an answer for you right away, she will answer it after class on UM Learn Discussion Forums. BIOL1020 is a heavy course, given that you have to understand a lot of concepts. I highly recommend her for this course!
She's super kind! She always tries her best to explain and clarify things. Also replies to emails very fast. Attendance is mandatory because there are Learning Catalytics questions in pearson during the lecture times which is 5% of your total grade. I will take her again next term for BIO1030. The best prof out of all the other bio1020 profsIthink
Professor Doering is why I began loving biology. I was always so excited for her upbeat attitude and knowledge in class. Getting to know her in student hours was the best part of my week, and I'm glad I did, as she also gives great study advice there. One of the best teachers I've ever had. Definitely take this class with her!!
TAKE HER! It is clear that she cares about her students, she has office hours and is very accessible. For each topic, she provides learning outcomes, so if you can answer those questions you're pretty much good to go for quizzes and exams. She uses discussion forums to answer questions as well. Overall, such a great prof
I took BIOL 1020 and it was a great class however, Ms. Doering tends to go really fast during her lectures and it's hard to keep up. She is really nice, but her lectures are very information heavy and she suggests reading lots of the textbook even after class.
Amazing professor, definitely take her class if you can! She is very accessible outside of class to answer any questions you have and really cares for all her students! Quizzes and exams are very fair! Lecture slides are clear and are easy to study off of.
easy course entertaining and was kind
Absolute gem and is kind towards students. Course itself is a lot of memorization and the online quizzes were not exactly easy, but also not too difficult. There are a lot of textbook readings but you can still do well without reading most of them. Jennifer is an entertaining prof and it is clear she loves what she teaches. Strongly recommend!
Jennifer is an amazing prof, she is such a kind person and is so approachable. She loves helping students and will meet outside of class if needed. She answers emails super quickly and is very organized. She keeps the lectures and tutorials interesting and fun and she explains things well. The tutorial quizzes and lecture exams are very fair.
Jennifer is an amazing prof, and I'd recommend her to any first year! I had her for 1020 and chose to take 1030 with her too. Her powerpoint slides pretty much cover everything. Between the lab, assignments, quizzes, and exams, its easy feel like you really understand the material. She has office hours 2x a week -- she really cares!
I had her for Bio1020 and I had her for Bio1030 as well! She is a really nice professor! Very approachable, sometimes funny during the lectures, really kind. You can tell that she cares about her students a lot. Her classes are pretty interesting and fun. Definitely recommend her for their first-year bio! You can still do well without a textbook!
Dr. Doering is a great prof who cares about her students. However it was her first time teaching this course and I felt like she was a bit unsure of how to present the material. This course was identical to BIOL2242 except for the random extra things that Dr. Doering would add to the lectures. I loved her for 2500 but was disappointed by this class
I've taken first year bio courses with Prof. Doering, but BIOL 2500 with her is by far my favourite! I strongly recommend this course to anyone needing to fulfil their bio credits. She delivers interesting lectures and explains the trickier concepts very well.
Awesome Prof. Lectures were clear and did a good job of explaining things. Tests were all fair. She was happy to help during office hours.
Her tutorials are a very fun time!
Very nice & cares about her students, highly recommend
Jennifer is sweet and passionate but she doesn't teach very well and puts way too many words on the slide, it is difficult to see what the big picture is. she mainly reads off her slides and doesn't understand the math in this course, if you want a better understanding she's good at explaining outside of class, just book an appointment with her
Is clear on what is testable and what is not. Course breakdown quizzes, exams, and assignments. No surprises on exams. Assessments are fair, and accessible outside of class time. She doesn't try to make your life hard at all. As long as you put in the work & actually know your stuff, you'll get the grade you want. Take w her at all costs.
Doering is an easy professor. She was much more interested in Biology 1 than Genetics but she does a fine job of teaching. Mastering assignments are an easy extra boost so do those as they come up. Just show up to class and read the textbook for what you don't understand and it's an easy course.
This professor is amazing and has deep understanding of what she is teaching.
Jennifer presents the content in a very interesting way and can crack some really funny jokes too! Half of the course is 1020's genetics portion. The tutorial quizzes and the exams were very fair and easy. Mastering genetics = free 15% and to make matters even better, she has a super easy bonus assignment for up to a 3 mark bonus on the final.
Sometimes her classes can get boring. She notes what's testable and isn't. If you reach out to her, you'll definitely get a satisfactory reply, coursework, quiz and exams not really difficult, just take note if what she says and you'll be all good.
Tests are very unfair, she gives no study resources. Lectures are easy to follow but tests are foreign compared to her lectures.
Jennifer was always enthusiastic during her lectures and there was always a good energy in her class. Although this is true Jennifer does not provide any study resources and during her lectures she will only read off the slides , so don't bother coming. Be ready to self learn 98% of the topics you go over because she does not help much at all.
I regret taking jennifer for this bio course. Her lectures are useless as she simply reads them off word by word. She provides no study resources so be prepared to stress for her exams. In comparisons to her lecture slides, the questions on the exam are foreign.
Shes very smart, almost too smart sometimes. She writes really tough midterms compared to other bio profs, but is very knowledgable. I'd recommend taking her if you're very smart and motivated.
SUCH a caring and knowledgeable prof!! Some of the recent ratings on here say she didn't provide study resources, which is NOT TRUE at all! She provided us with tons of great study resources, clear grading criteria, and lots of opportunities to ask questions. She truly cares for your success as a student, I highly recommend Jennifer!
Loved this prof! I took first year biology with her and although the course itself is material heavy, she made lectures easy to follow and listen to. She will tell you exactly what she expects you to know for quizzes and exams which is really helpful. The assignments can be time consuming but are fairly easy if you set aside the time for them.
Awesome prof. A+ is super possible with effort. Go to lectures as a few test questions are not on notes and she verbally says them. She is super nice and fair exam questions.
She has a great personality and very good slides, but pay attention at all times otherwise you will miss stuff and if bio isnt your strong suit it will hurt your grade. Make sure to go over the learning outcomes given out and study them to full understanding. DO NOT wait until the night before as there is too much information for that to be good.
Very nice and caring prof. She tries her best to make lectures fun and interesting. Shes always accessible outside of class.
Jennifer is really good. Accessible outside classes and gives good feedback on the course material
posts lectures late at night so don't take it as an early class. the final is just questions from both midterms and the iclicker. overall decent class and would recommend.
Great prof! Has lots of office hours. Midterm and exams are a lots of repeats of IClicker and quiz questions. She also provided tons of study material.
Gives you literally everything you'll need to do well in her class, from LO's to practice questions to practice midterms/finals that reflect the EXACT kind of material you'll encounter in the real things. Lectures are basically summarized textbook, but good to attend if you need help. Mastering is also helpful. And she gives extra credit! Loved her
Jennifer is an amazing and caring prof. If you attend lectures and go over your notes, you are going to do great. She offers long office hours and they are very useful. You can tell she is passionate about the material and her lectures are easy to follow along and understand. I would 100% recommend taking her class!!
i loved jennifer, she posted incredibly detailed slides - i did very well by mainly only studying those. she was clearly very passionate of the topics she taught and was engaging. overall just such a sweet prof who is very eager to help and wants her students to do well and enjoy the class
never met a more caring and dedicated prof. she is SUPER helpful and works tirelessly to set students up for success.also provides MANY study resources and tries to make her lectures engaging.she talks super fast tho(so u have to prep before hand or you'll be confused) and the midterm was lowkey hard but she's phenomenal. live laugh love jennifer
TAKE HER!!!!!
She is so nice and does everything in her power so students can do well
Really good prof
she is verrrry passionate about teaching, and about biology. she will respond to questions on the UM learn discussion forums pretty much immediately like she is on the ball. her lectures and slides are very thorough. great prof!
By far the best prof I've had at the u of m! It's obvious that she cares about her students. Jennifer gives lots of opportunities for her students to succeed, there is never anything unexpected on the quizzes or exams. I would definitely suggest this prof to anybody she's absolutely amazing:)
Amazing professor for biology. She is very passionate about her material and enjoys sharing it with her classes. Offers so many study resources to help her students succeed as well. Would highly recommend.
so kind and always willing to help! love jennifer bad
She is very caring and compassionate. She is probably the only prof I have met that is ALWAYS excited to teach. I also took biology 1 with her and she was amazing prof for that course as well.
Jennifer has amazing and detailed lectures which give you a lot of the tools for success and it is evident that she is very passionate about biology. However, her exams are often foreign to what is taught in lecture and you need to learn her question style to succeed, which can only be done after writing the first midterm. Apply, don't memorize.
Very good professor, she held lots of student hours and was accessible if you needed to ask a question. She expects more of an understanding of the material, rather than just memorisation. Attending lectures is not mandatory, but her iClicker questions are good preparation for midterms/ final
Jennifer is overall a solid prof. Take her iClickers and quizzes seriously and take note of them. They're extremely similar as to what will be on the exam. Once you learn her question style you can figure out what you need to study for. Although the issue is you really only find this out after the midterm. Study ahead! BIOL 1020 is content dense.
You could tell she is very passionate about biology, and she is very engaging. However, her exams are quite difficult. She tests on the tiniest bits of information hidden away in the slides, and lots of questions may come as a surprise. Make sure to study hard and applying the information is more useful than memorizing.
I had a wonderful time learning biology thanks to Jennifer. She is engaging, knowledgeable and provides in-depth information. Her exams are definitely challenging but as long as you read the textbook, ask questions and attend her lectures you will do well. Glad to have taken her course and would do so again.
Having a new prof this term makes me appreciate Jennifer way more. Although her lectures/exams are more detailed in comparison to other profs, she's good at explaining and provides a lot of study material to make this course an easy A. She mainly tests lecture slides, but every slide has enough material where reading the textbook isn't necessary.
Great prof. Lectures are easy to follow, midterms were easy as well. She really pushes doing the readings, but if you don't have time don't stress it. Never touched the book and did well. take her class you'll do well.
Amazing prof! Lectures are super engaging and she makes it easy to learn by relating concepts to day to day things. She uses discussion forums so you can ask her questions while you're studying which is super helpful! Her slides are super detailed so even if you miss a lecture it's not the end of the world to catch up.
Amazing person, horrible professor. Don't think should be rated as high. Lots of useless information on her slides for what the course is. Told us to study & learn certain sections then proceeded to not do anything with it on exams. the assignments don't help with practice or the exam. unnecessarily long exam, not enough time. would not recommend
Easily one of the best professors I have ever had. Made class super enjoyable and was obviously extremely passionate about the content which makes a great difference. This is the second class I have taken with her and I hope to continue to have her as a teacher in the future.
As much as she is passionate about biology, she gives BRUTAL midterms with so much material and little time. She is a good speaker but assigns far more material than other profs and is terrible at communicating. She refuses to answer questions and I felt very discouraged to speak up or ask questions. It is very difficult to contact her.
Jennifer is a very nice person, but as a professor she isn't the best. I had her for both BIOL 1020 and now BIOL 1030, and I liked her teaching far more in 1020. It feels like there's so much content with little to no guidance of how it'll be shown on assessments, so it's really difficult to know what to study and easy to study the wrong things.
Jennifer is the best! She clearly loves what she is teaching and it's infectious. I had her for both 1020 and 1030 and would recommend to take her class to anybody. Both 1020 and 1030 are fairly heavy if you're taking 5 classes, but she makes the lectures interesting and makes it clear what you will be tested on. Best prof ever!
She seem very passionate about what she is teaching but her lectures are too heavy, there is so much information to remember but not alot of time. It also doesn't help when she has learning objectives but told our class that won't help us. Then what's the point of them? I would not recommend
Such a good professor! All of her tests and assignments were VERY straightforward.
I barely understand her lectures. She always aims to finish the pdf no matter what, so her lectures are always overwhelming. Also, her tests are very heavy no matter how hard I studied!!
Jennifer is honestly an amazing person, however the slides are filled with A TON of information, super overwhelming especially for a first year. BUT… if you do happen to be confused about a topic, she is almost always accessible and she answers discussions questions quickly. Her tests are also overwhelming especially if you don't come to lectures.
Jennifer is quite a nice person, but she isn't the best prof. Her exams were quite tricky and weren't representative of what we did in class. She completely emphasizes the stuff done in labs, yet hardly had any questions on that information on the exams. If you need to take with her, really study the stupid little details!
Worst professor sorry to say this no offence to her or anyone but she is not at all helpful.she doesn't care about students. I would not recommend taking her for this course atleast
Worst prof...dont know how to make slides easy to read and she is not good at all
Her tests were really heavy and overwhelming. She doesn't explain everything in classes and we had to read it through the textbook only which was crazy!
Very nice person, Terrible prof, slides are just the textbook put in a powerpoint which she reads off. Does not explain. Would never take again.
She really knows what she's talking about, and makes the content seem interesting. I enjoyed being in her class, but I had a tough time on a couple of the tests. That was more on me not studying enough though lol
she is an amazing person however her course i found to be very overwhelming for a first year student. her lecture notes were hard to decipher unless you went to the lecture and listened to the explanation. her midterms i found to be incredibly difficult compared to what I've heard about other BIOL 1020 professors. basically, avoid in first year!
Jennifer is great, she's super interactive and friendly, always open to giving feedback or answering questions. Cares about her students and wants them to do well. Lectures are clear and easy to follow, textbook isn't technically mandatory however HEAVILY recommended. Light on assignments so focus on consistent studying. Overall all she's amazing!
Explains concepts very clearly. Slides have a little too much info on them and she made us memorize complex pathways which were barely tested if at all. If you pay attention and read the textbook, getting a good grade is more than doable.
so so sweet and it shows that she cares about the students here! her love for biology (esp plants) is also so evident and very motivating to see!
This is my third class with Jennifer! I've taken BIOL 1020, 1030, and now 2500 with her. I must say I recommend her a lot more for 1020 and 2500 than for 1030. 2500 has been good with lots of assignments. She makes it easy to understand, but her slides are jam packed with info so just be sure to read them in advance so you understand her!
Jennifer is really sweet and enthusiastic, but the amount of content in her lecture slides is so overwhelming and most of it isn't even on the exams. She tends to read off the slides during lectures but then may mention one little thing that MIGHT be on the exam so you are forced to attend. Exams are super tricky, so study HARD if you choose her.
Jennifer is a very nice person and clearly enjoys her content. But, her slides are SO full and the exams are also very hard. So if youre in this class you will be studying LOTS. But, if you have any questions she is very accessible outside of class.
One of the best first year bio profs.
Jennifer is a very good prof! She tends to read from her slides, but she also adds information verbally, so being in class is important. Her exams are difficult, but she has a bunch of study resources to guide you. (past exams, practice questions, text book). She also has good office hours and replies very quickly to emails and the discussion page.
Professor Doering is so sweet, she has a very obvious passion for biology, her students, and skunks. She is active on discussion forums to answer any possible question you may have, and her tests are two stage (you take it individually and then take it again with a group) which can help boost your grade. Non-cumulative final. Highly recommend.
This course is very lecture-heavy. One thing I appreciate about it is that Jennifer reuses many of her i-clicker questions and quizzes on the midterms.
Jennifer is a very nice person, but her lectures were quite heavy and I found that her explanations weren't super clear. I have nothing bad to say about her, but as a first year, I wish I took this course with another professor who explained topics a little bit better and simpler. I do love how she used quiz/iClicker questions on the exams though.
Jennifer is nice, she does have most of the textbook basically copy and pasted onto the slides. She adds information that tends to pop up in quizzes and, exams with lots of tricky applications and not enough time.I would recommend taking this course if you love biology but if you want to get a better grade and pass bio maybe choose a different prof.
Professor Doering goes out of her way to help students with weekly reminders, new study strategies and study sheets. It was a pleasure asking her questions, be it in person or on the disc. forum. I would heavily recommend reading the textbook: I found it a good way to see same info from a different perspective, especially if you're a visual person.
Final was a breeze
She's very quick to respond to discussion forums and gives study sheets and video links, which I found very helpful. Tests are mostly lecture-based, but lectures can be a bit fast so you WILL need to go back to fully understand. When studying, there's no point memorizing, you have to understand and apply, which her iClickers are representative of.
This prof is amazing. Genuinely cares about her students and is super reasonable if you need any help. Course is difficult but super reasonable and fair. Lectures are very interesting and you can tell she is super inspired by her work. She is also super funny and the tutorials are very helpful.
Really caring prof. Her lectures are very engaging and she is pretty accesible outside class. If you go to her office hours she would not only help you with questions you have but will also recommend study strategies.
