She is a great teacher who is very animated. The class is clear in expectations but is not easy. Most of us really enjoy the class.
directions are unclear. example: she instructs you to make a spreadsheet with your data on it without specifying a format, then grades you down for incorrect format. nice to your face, evil with her red pen on your assigments.
Lots and lots of notes. Can get very boring. Hand Cramps are unavoidable.
Just a lecture class. 3 exams and thats it. Hard because you cover about 20 pages of notes on each exam.
This is, by far, the worst class i have ever taken at mott! This instructor is horrible. If at all possible, Do Not Take!
This was a cool class. Used real forensic cases to show methods and worked with lots of specimens. Gave alot of feedback on projects and ways to help me learn the material. Use the websites she gives on Blackboard to help you study!!!!
The class was interesting. Tests over bones were annoying but rather easy. Playing with the bones was awesome. The projects were fun and interesting too.
She's so cute and funny. I love her.
She's a fun and exciting teacher, I just have a hard time with the pronounciation of some of the words, makes the class interesting, would not take if I did not need it.
Unclear with definitions, unhelpful, talks to students like they are below her, class itself not too difficult; time consuming, it would be cheaper for me to read the book at home rather than pay her to not help me, unwilling to help with homework, addresses issue before actually saying what it is
She is not very clear when asking questions on homework or tests, she does not like to answer questions, She makes the class exciting, but she needs to realize that we are beginning and do not know this stuff, like she does.
This is the worst professor I have had at any college, she is not clear, will not answer a question, and is never there, so she piles work on you because she missed days. Never take her if you can help it. Always avoid her classes.
She doesn't know how to teach, I was so interested in the subject until I took her classes then I lost all interest in anthropology. I would never take her again and I wouldn't have the second time if I knew it was her that taught it. TOTALLY BAD EXPERIENCE
I really enjoyed her class. The six cultural observations I had to write were tough. But they improved my writing skills and helped give me a better understanding of the world. The exams are tough and far between, so if you take her class study your notes a couple of times a week!
She is no help at all. Very unclear with her questions and a horrible teacher. She talks down to you like you are stupid. Dont ask her questions because she will take away and dignity you might have. Have respect for yourself and dont take this class
I loved this class. I learned a lot from her about forensics. I would recommend this class to any student who wishes to take it. Be prepared though to take lots of notes-she does suppy the pages for you to do so. I look at road kill now in a different way.
I am a very good student and I struggled in her class. Her tests are so far inbetween with such a wide range of material. You need to realy stay on top of everything and don't bother asking her a question... she will just make you feel stupid!
Great! She is a bit goofy but makes class fun. Every time I asked a question or went to her office she made me feel welcome. She made the subject fun with in class games (not just listening to her lecture). Tests weren't the easiest but I did pretty good by only studying my notes.
Most fun class I've ever taken. Got to work with lots of bones and stuff. Showed really cool cases from around the state. Makes me what to become a forensic scientist. A MUST TAKE!!!!!!

She took over for a failure of a professor who managed to get himself fired halfway through the term...great lady, made class a ball. Tests were difficult, not impossible, and she posted notes for us to study with - so it wasnt as painful to take the final. Would reccomend her, not a blowoff class but definitely a fun one!
this teacher is very good but u have to stay on top of ur work and the groups projects are very fun and intresting. do take her as a forensic teacher she is very fun and makes lectures seem like funny conversations
By far the worst teacher I have ever had at Mott Community College. You will learn absoloutley nothing in that class I worked my butt off and only got a "C" and I am a Honor student. She teaches as if you're supposed to be forensic experts when obviously if we were we wouldn't be in the class.
I thought she was a very nice person and she seems to love what she does-which is always a plus in teaching! :)
This is a horrible class to take. She's the worst teacher I've ever had. Im disappointed in Mcc for letting her continue with her behavior. She treats students w/disrespect & grades 2 criticaly. Fast lectures. She needs to realize that this isnt a graduate class. Im a CJ major, I dont need to know how to spell every bone(207). DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
*WARNING* This class is extremely difficult. I would not recommend it to anyone. I am a 4.0 student and struggled throughout the entire semester. She leads you to believe that it is a forensics class, but it is really anatomy and physiology with a few forensics thrown in the mix. Tests are impossible. If you miss a class you will be lost.
Took class online...very unclear about the writting assignments. also, waay to much reading at one time to actually retain all of it for tests.
Ms. Fillion is one of the best profs at mott. you have to work to get a good grade in the class but she does not make it impossible. There is a large workload but if you keep up with assignments and attend lectures and study you will be fine. It is not a blowoff class. She expects you to work hard but in the end you learn loads.
I took the online class... and it hurt. The writing assignments are poorly described and if you do ANYTHING wrong you lose LOTS of points. She is a stickler when it comes to grading and makes you work for your keep, if you dont like to read don't take this class; I averaged 2-4 hours of reading a week in this class.
THIS IS A GREAT CLASS TAUGHT BY AN EVEN A BETTER INSTRUCTOR. You must attend class and take good notes, but she gives you reading questions to help you understand the material. I am an average student and I got an A, but when I had questions I just asked and she would help. She grades the way she should if it's wrong it's wrong. Just study!
Any negative comment is probably from someone that did not take notes, answer reading questions she gives, read the book, or study. She is a GREAT PROFESSOR and really knows her stuff and has a realy love for it. But she gives you everything you need to succeed in this class. By the way the list above should be done with all classes, right?
There was WAAAAY too much to do in the allowed time. I took the online class, and everything was unclear, and the due dates were unreasonable. The last 2 weeks of class, there was a powerpoint due, a paper, Unit 3 Exam AND the Final Exam. It seemed a littled rediculous and overwhelming on top of the 3 different books we had to read.
Forensic anthropology is not like CSI! If you know this, it will help. Most people will have to read all the material and study a lot. You are required to know all the bones of the body and the features on the bones. Not too much homework, and you know when all the quizzes are in advance, def not a slacker class though. Pay attention, take notes.
Professor Fillion is nice, but lots of notes, hard 2 concentrate on her talking while we are writing. She calls off class often then we gotta catch up. Only have 3 exams. So much to learn for 1. She treats you like a cheater/dirty person during her exams, watches you like a prison guard! Doesn't explain things. Takes 3 weeks for her to grade tests!
It was the hardest class that i took since i started college. Way to much work. You have to do unit reviews which where pointless, then on top of that you had power point and a paper they where all due back to back. You had t read at least tw to three chs a night. Very demanding class and very time consumming. IT was a fun class but alot of work.
She is teaching a 100 level class as if it was a 200 level. Expecting the class to make up study questions instead of making some sort of study guide handout.
She should be out in the field and not in the class room. She is an awful instructor and uterly unfair and unforgiving. Without those two qualities teaching in the class room should not be permitted. I wish she would leave Mott College.
Great teacher! Her lectures are interesting with very organized notes. If you're interested in this field then you should know that it isn't easy! Don't join if you want a blow off class where you can slack and get a good grade. This IS a competitive field and it's nice learning from someone who's knowledgeable and enjoys what they do.
Fun class and she does explain notes and chapters well. Just a lot of information to take in so I would only take this class if you are really interested and have time. She is funny and I think everyone really likes her personally, just a lot of work.
I love the class! She is such a great teacher, the class is just very demanding and you have to be willing to set aside hours to study. But if your interested you don't really mind it. I look forward to taking other classes with her.
Good teacher and very funny and tries to keep the class interested. It wasnt easy though. A lot of stuff to cover and very demanding. If you take one of her classes just make sure you have plenty of time to put towards studying and homework!
Unreal expectations for deadlines. Second term paper due before she even graded the first. Talks down to all students like they are stupid. Lectures go incredibly fast. Will not give you any idea on what tests will be over, all are cumulative. Her forensic anthro class is essentially an anatomy class, took a high school course with more forensics
Took online class, lots of reading, was fairly interested heading in, hate anthropology after taking class, ecstatic to have it end. Just do the work asked like a robot, and on due dates which were posted from another semester(little detail that would have helped out), can't use original thoughts in papers. Not recommended if options available.
One of my favorite teachers at Mott! Very funny and you can tell she enjoys what she does, which makes it so much easier for the class to enjoy as well. Serious and industrious students should have no problems as far as homework is concerned. I plan on taking her again!
Just lectures most of the class and the only way to do well on the quizzes or test is to copy down everything. The wording on her quizzes are confusing and there are sometimes questions that you don't even go over. Basically be prepared to read and teach yourself.
Despite her tellin you not to, you must copy her power points word for word. Read and take notes on every chapter. Her online readings are written at far above the reading level for most students at a community college. She is neither helpful nor accommodating. Her exams/quizzes were worded strangely with many grammatical errors.
Way to much to learn, not enough time. timed practical, (one min per two questions) midterm and case analysis paper all in the same week.
Loved this class! Love her teaching style. My Favorite teacher at Mott! This is not an easy class, but if you have an interest in Anthropology and show up and do you work, you should do just fine!
TypOs galore in everything she writes! She makes quite a few snide remarks, is not personable at all.She gives out way too much work in too short of a time frame. Some questions on tests were never covered in class.Only take her class if you absolutely have to!!!Lesson plans are unorganized, her online course is all over the place!!!
She is an okay teacher but she is way to obsessed over her discussion boards. Not everyone has time to get on the board every single day, multiple times a day and respond to everything she posts. Even if you respond to the 3 classmates and meet posts requirements, she will still mark you down for low DB participation.
I am now a grad student. This college class was the very first I walked into knowing I wanted to pursue a career in anthropology. That being said, the course was hard, but if you listened and took notes, it was simple enough. My class at UM-Flint in skeletal anatomy led to very little studying because of this class.
Very poor teaching skill
For an online class, she expects too much. I work full time and go to school full time and do not have time to be on Blackboard every single day. This is a class to take if you are not taking any others. You will struggle and not get much help. I would not recommend her to anyone. Very poor quality.
For an online class, simply doing what is asked is not enough. For example when she says you only need 3 posts for the online discussion, you had better do 5 if you want more than a D letter grade. Also, her grammar is atrocious for a teacher, let alone college level.
Online classes in general require more work than campus classes. This instructor requires daily participation which is ludicrous . Students are instructed to write papers at a college level but, the instructions given are so poorly typed and constructed they are hard to follow. You can seek help but, do no expect to receive useful information.
Lots of in-class projects, lots of power points., LOTS of memorization and spelling counts. Hands-on learning with real and plastic bones + a facial reconstruction. Passed with a 4.0
Very passionate about her experience and career, and spreads that excitement around the room as she explains anthropology and the cases she's worked on. Only problem I had were the very messy notes, but I just re-organized them later. Doesn't go over the skeleton in class, so you have to do that in Blackboard after class.
Unless you have a crazy desire to become an archaeologist do not take this class or this professor. Simply the best advice I can give you. Beware nothing about this class is "introductory" much closer to a high live 200 or low level 300 class.
First professor for online classes and it was horrible. She had deadlines every night and tried having her understand that it is hard meeting those deadlines with a job and she just asked her if I need help working on my management skills. Do NOT recommend her for an online class.
Expected you to read all articles and watch her online lecture as well as read two chapters from the book in one week, well less than that since you have a discussion board post due before the end of the week. Disliked the fact that i had to take a syllabus quiz and get a 90 to start my class work and see what my first assignment would be.
Great professor, truly knows her stuff. I find her teaching very interesting however the textbook is online and in hindsight is a great idea but because she is still working it out she wont post most the reading until the week you need the reading so you have readings on top of lectures on top of homeworks on top of more readings all online.
Took this class online (spring). It was a lot more work than I anticipated. Read a chapter every week, along with multiple articles (some as long as 50 pages)/videos. Also a discussion board post 3xs a week. Testing and grading is fair. If you are into Anthropology, you will enjoy the class. Lectures are done very well, she knows the subject
I genuinely enjoyed this class throughout first semester. She explained things very well so it was easy to understand. Overall just stay with your notes and youll do really good in her class!
Fillion is amazing. She's extremely knowledgeable and qualified. On top of that, she's nice and funny too. Her class was interesting, but it is HARD. It doesn't seem like it at first, but it gets there eventually. You have learn every bone in the body and more. If you're not willing to put in 10+ hrs studying a week, this is not the class for you.
I may have gotten a decent grade in the class, but I would NEVER take another class with this professor again. Tells you to do one thing, but you have to read between the lines because there are things she won't tell you. Changes your grades after they've already been submitted and will talk down to you.
Professor Fillion was great! I learned so much and loved the class. My only piece of advice is that if youre not big on reading, then this might not be the professor for you. Part of the weekly assignments includes a HEAVY amount of reading. The reading is required as the professor will pull questions from it for quizzes/discussions!
I would NEVER take a class from this professor again. She is extremely unprofessional and never grades students papers, causing panic for the students. She expects things to be done a certain way, yet doesn't explain how she wants it done and just expects you to read her mind and know it. She didn't even start grading papers until about 6 weeks in.
In my opinion, I would not recommend taking any classes from this professor. The professor did not grade assignments until many weeks have gone by which will cause confusion on how you are doing in the class. Very difficult to understand the grading requirements and poor grammar from the professor.
I personally would never take another one of this professors classes again. She didn't start grading until after midterms and even then we didn't receive much feedback. She wasn't clear on everything she wanted from her assignments. When asked for help on specific papers she was super vague. Prepare for long readings that cannot be skimmed over.
Honestly, I really expected to vibe with this lady. She seemed really cool at first, until her true personality started to show. Make sure you are screen recording every single thing you do in this class to have proof you did it and turned it in. Despite what canvas tells you for submission, she will claim she never got it.
RUN NOW! Worst professor I have ever had the pleasure of spending two weeks of class with. Jennifer completely wasted by time by being being an argumentative witch the entire class. Don't worry about what her syllabus says, she will do whatever tf she wants, then mark you down for following her exact instructions. I'm making a formal complaint.
Assigns WAY to much in terms of reading and assignments. assigns on average about 80 pages of articles to read along with 2-3 thirty minutes lecture videos on top of the 4-5 assignments you have to work on. She will mark you down 10 points on your quiz if you don't take notes that meet her standards. Was told copying definitions is plagiarism.
I suggest that Pref. Fillion retire. She claims to have 20+ years of teaching and she is clearly burnt out. This reflects in her insufferable attitude, lazy teaching methods, and bogus grading. I strongly suggest you find another professor immediately.
I took this class since I thought it was interesting. I wish I hadn't... It is not a hard class content-wise, but there is SO MUCH WORK. I only took 3 classes this semester and still I struggled to finish my work. I spent most of my time on this class. She rarely grades. This creates a problem, especially on projects that build on your assignments.
Class time is spent in groups, actual lectures are on Zoom. Tons of reading. She grades your notes and questions on the quizzes aren't in the readings. Assignments are frustrating, you get almost no useful feedback, and they don't get graded for weeks. Rambles instead of actually answering questions. At least she provides the readings for free.
This "teacher" wants an all-or-nothing approach if sick. I was rather ill for a large portion of her class. (I showed a doctors note.) As a result I was only able to do some work. Apparently, I should have not done anything (in any class, not just this one) if I wanted an exemption. I found the class interesting, but she was far too strict.
This subject is fascinating, but the class was hindered by the teacher's methods.
Syllabus rules were rather arbitrary. Some interesting subject matter. She seems friendly in her lecture videos. I don't recommend.
You don't know where you stand in her class, there's no way to know how to improve because she does not grade her assignments. Class ended on June 30th she started grading last week of class , today is July 3rd. Still some assignments not graded. Materials she provides and quizzes are different. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER AT ALL.
She WILL leave your assignments ungraded for many weeks while lecturing you about time management. Often unavailable, not very responsive to email. WAY too much reading/work for a 3 credit, 200 level CC class. Some work must be done IRL, including interviewing strangers. Unclear grading criteria. Nitpicky at times. Still got an A but, SO much work.
TONS of work outside of class, surprise work in upcoming weeks modules for previous weeks. Cancels class a lot. Doesn't lecture at all, expects you to know everything. Wants you to take over 20 pages of handwritten notes every week on top of various assignments given each week.
She was awful towards me and accused me of plagiarism, when asked about how I plagiarized she danced around the question and couldn't give me a response. I put so much time and effort into my Crime Scene Reconstruction project and she failed me. I do not recommend her as a professor at all.
Going into this class I thought it would be fun and easy but I was mistaken. She made this class more difficult than what it needs to be. You're not allowed to use notes on any test, during your test-your screen is recorded and yourself is. I would recommend taking with a different professor
