Her and her TA basically speak together thoughout class. It's not hard to understand them just the topic, and only if you didn't read. Do not take this course with this professor if you do not intend to put some actual effort and know what your reading.
i absolutely loved her as a teacher. she really cares about the students. sometimes she is unclear but dont be afraid to ask her to explain. she encourages the students to visit her during office hours if there are any questions. i learned alot from the c
She's extremely intelligent, but you have to take awesoem notes to do well on tests. MIssing class will hurt you. She moves quickly, but she's always willing to help you in anyway she can, even if it's just slowing down.
She is a very educated lady. She goes a little fast but does not hesitate to slow down if needed. Tests are kinda confusing especially final but if you dont miss class and do a little research outside class on theories you will do just fine, and dont be afraid to ask questions.
Jenny is AWESOME. She truly cares about all of her students and she will go out of her way to make sure you understand the material. I took deviance because it was open, but went out of my way to add her to my following semester's schedule because I love her so much. She's so smart!!!
My experience with DR. Friedman was not as positive as others. I found her to be difficult to follow (scatterbrained!). Her tests were difficult but manageable. The material itself is not as challenging as trying to understand her!
she is all over the place with her political banter. we had to watch michael moore movies.
Be ready to do a lot of reading. She is willing to help students outside of class
She state we will have a lot of discussions, she stands in front of the class and rambles on and on, so we barely get to discuss anything. She is very vague about what she wants us to right in our papers and journals but grades us on what she expects, which she does not tell us until after the fact.
I took it during the summer last year and I found that her teaching style is unusual in that she has difficulty in making sense out of her discussions. She is quite scatterbrained as the others have mentioned, and she doesn't explain very well. Do not take her class if you expect an easy "A"...
great class. took it during the summer. Fast and wasy if you attend all classes and do the reading
She is a major scatterbrain and she is VERY opinionated. She hasn't got a clue what she is talking about. She turned sociology into a political class, and we watch a lot of Michael Moore films. Her PhD means absolutely NOTHING. She can't teach.
this lady is so dysfunctional and is a complete scatterbrain. she doesn't know what she's talking about. plus she's a major female dog.
This lady is so full of herself and needs to get off her high horse. She is so opinionated and her exams are hard. Her lectures are irrelevant and are a waste of time. Nothing can save you. The class average is a 75. Only take her if you love torture.
The class average was a 75. That should say something about her. Only take this class if you like being punished cause she will torture you with her BORING lectures and annoying voice. She tries to create this "learning" environment, but she's highly opinionated and only cares about HER own beliefs.
WORST TEACHER AT USF
She's a great professor, very very intelligent. I love her opinions. I think her class is easy, just make sure you read the books.
She is great...she is slightly hard to follow but she is super smart. I got like a 98 in Drugs and I'm taking Devaince right now. Read, read, read...and go to class. She will help you if you approach her!
She's the MOST HORRIBLE teacher anyone can ask for. She's highly opinionated and wants you to think the way she thinks. She's an **** to me.
She is a nice teacher but she grades her tests very hard. She also does not give out notes you must come to class everyday and you have to read three books for the class. Your grade is based on three tests and nothing else so unless your good at tests dont take the class.
I thought she was a great teacher! Just be able to think critically about issues and be able to argue your point and back it up in essays. I'm taking her again next semester
I took her for Latina Lives & hated it, I thought i was going to learn abt Latin women & their lives & culture, all i learned was abt her crackhead friend Lilly whose she's writing a book abt.
"What the heck is this woman rambling about?" That pretty much sums up what I was repeating in my head over and over. She seriously lacks critical thinking skills. A biased left wing-nut. Opinionated to the point of being delusional. Tests all essay. 5 books to read. Exam study sheets are ridiculous & confusing. Sounds great, don't it?
I think she was a great professor. You just have to read and basically be willing to work hard and learn a lot. She basically just wants to see that you are thinking and can defend your own opinions. If you are able to do that and don't mind actually usig ur noggins in college you will love this class!!!
Awful. Close-minded. Intolerant of diverging views. This woman has convinced herself that she is correct, and no other opinions deserve attention. She would be unemployed if this job was not available to her. Effecively, a bumb with a state-sponsored job. She is so confused that she gives liberals a bad name.
Drugs and society.... the class is pretty hard to understand. She's unclear about how exactly she's going to test you and you definitely need to read all the books and readings. If you go to class and answer the test questions based on her opinions you'll do okay. She just wants to open your mind to a new perspective, basically so go along with it!
She was an awesome teacher, although she was a little scatterbrained, but easy enough to follow. I took her during the summer so the tests weren't to hard. As long as you study you'll do just fine. I would take her class again.
I signed up for this class with tons of interest on the subject and after taking it I have almost none. The class was very boring and even though I would study what she told us I would still sc**** by with a C on a test. Terrible teacher, do not recommend. Frankly I don't know how she has this job.
This lady is a mess. She literally goes off topic about 2000 times in a class period. Lectures have nothing to do with the test but if you pay close attention you will get an idea of what she wants you to say on the test based onher own opinions.
If you would rather write and express yourself on a test rather than fill in 75 bubbles, you will like this class. She was very helpful and available, willing to meet you outside of class if you needed help. She was a bit scattered, but if you listen to her lectures, you will do well on the test. I enjoyed her class, I got a B.
her purpose in teaching is not to teach you the subject, it is just to convert you to her political views. WARNING: she hates capitalism, corporations, money, successful people, men (shes married ironically), and anyone who disagrees with her. The tests are a little inconsistant with the class. if you dont attend you can still pass
No, definitely not hot. But she's a super smart lady. Her class was hard. I'm an A student and I got a B in this class. She's not the most clear lecturer. She puts 100% into the class because she's passionate about it, but I think she may be a little TOO smart. Very helpful outside of class. The reading is extremely boring, but you must read.
She is extremely intelligent, and offers help to all her students. You have to attend class to hear lectures and an occasional video, and read read read. The class is not an easy A, so only take it if you are interested in it. I got an A, but I had to really work for it.
Jenny always offeres students help and encourages them to express their thoughts. Tests are some what hard but if you do the readings, attend class and do the study guides you are guarnteed an A...I strongly encourage you to do the study guide. She is a very intelligent woman but at time the class can be extremely boring, sorry Jenny!
I love Jenny she is the best professor. She is a great person. She is loving and caring towards her students. She is also very passionate about what she does.
"Well, the base is good, but the house is upside-down." Jenny takes concepts that have academic weight, but she manipulates it into something that has no business in a classroom. If you have to add a disclaimer (or cite the Internet) to every point you make, you aren't teaching me. Read the books, mimic her POV on the essay, and you should pass.
Great professor! If your the type of student who doesn?t like to read or come to class I wouldn?t suggest taking this course. She can get off topic but as long as you ask questions &bring her back its all good. The material is easy to understand & she offers a new perspective on how we have been taught.Great course with an open discussion format!
If you don't agree with her point of views, you won't pass the test. Simple as that
Sooo boring! nice lady but learned nothing, she just loves to talk!
Amazing Professor! If you like the standard lecture notes with slides this class isn?t for you. I recommend this course to anyone interested in working with individuals dependent on illicit substance.Jenny offers a completely different framework than psych majors are taught.I feel my perspective has come full circle on multiple issues.
Very fair and open to opinions other than what is taught.
Jenny is a great professor because she really cares about the topics and really wants the class to be involved in the learning process. I disagree with comments that if you don't agree with her views you will fail, if you can back up your views then you can believe anything you want. I'm glad I decided to try the class despite some of these reviews
JENNY IS MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR IN THE WORLD! I love her, her class is extremely interesting & you learn a LOT. Don't skip class, read, & pay attention. She's really helpful outside of class too. She's passionate & keeps you interested. Tests aren't bad, especially if you're a good writer. Took her for 2 classes and LOVED them both (2 A-pluses!)
I took this class for summer A and she was a hot mess..she isnt very clue on material that would be given on the test and very unclear on the chapter notes and doesnt give a good study guide, she email-ed a list of definitions(which were useless)...can't teach worth crap...JUST AVOID THIS WOMAN
Jenny is a great professor. She is very passionate about the material and will give you every opportunity to do well. You need to read the books but they are all pretty easy reads. Attend class and read and you'll do well. Took her for Drugs and Deviance.
Jenny is crazy. Her handwriting is terrible and that is how she gives notes. I cannot read what she has written most of the time. I was interested in this topic before I took her class. I didn't really learn much except that she is very pro-drug and anti-war on drugs.
Definitely the WORST teacher I have ever had in college. She doesn't have a good teaching style, she just drones on for 50 minutes about nothing. I would not recommend her at all. Drugs and Society sounded like an extremely interesting class, but it was the worst I have ever taken. Her tests are impossible and you are expected to read way too much.
I thought this class would be easy but it's not..the multiple choice exam is horrible...you really don't know what she is asking..book materials is required..she is a nice lady, if you need help she is willingly to help you out :) if she sees u participating in class that's a plus!
*Sigh*...This was a terrible experience. Jenny is not a good professor. She's a nice person but a really bad teacher. Her thoughts are muddled and she opens her mouth and just lets them flow the entire class. She repeats the same point 100 times. It is BRUTAL. Her study guides are useless and include the grammar "How come...?" a lot. Avoid her.
Nice lady and very passionate about what she does. 6 short assignments and 3 exams. Go to class and do the readings, simple as that. It's not rocket science. Oh and be prepared to hear "as a sociologist.." A LOT.
While her handwriting isnt the best, she is a very good teacher. Tests are multiple choice + essay. Prepare to watch a lot of videos! Books that we had to read were interesting too. I enjoy Jenny's class!
This class was ridiculously easy. Attendance isn't really mandatory, since you can kind of tell her opinion on a matter from one day of class and then pander to that on the test and essays. I got an A and went about six times.
deviance - take this class! take this professor! 3 multi exams. 3 projects, write a paper? sure! make a poster? sure! whatever you want to do as long as you show you understand. open discussions. student lead conversations. talk about current events. watch the news/ read the paper. books are fantastic reads. tenured professor that gives 100%.
Horrible teacher! she isnt clear on anything she wants. She does not teach, didnt learn anything really. she repeats herself a million times and goes to the same websites every class. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND NOT TAKE THIS WOMAN!
Drugs & Society: Handwriting is awful! The class is pretty easy and not much work involved. 3 exams & 6 two-point assignments. She has interesting stories to tell and doesn't force her opinions on you. She's really nice and I really enjoyed her as a professor and recommend this course!
VERY easy class. No brainer. All you need is common sense to pull off a good grade in this class. She repeats what she says every class so it does get boring. Very hard to read her hand writing but easy notes. Just answer essay questions with the word society and you will do well.
Dr. Friedman is compassionate about her field and very easy and pleasant to comuunicate with. Class was a little challengin for me, but I think this says more about my learning styles than her teaching methods. Pretty good teacher.
Awesome class! Jenny is a wonderful teacher who is passionate about what she teaches. Here handwriting is pretty terrible but her lectures are easy enough to follow. Have to read the texts but they are all really interesting. Jenny is willing to help any student if they don't understand.
Great prof, took her for Drugs and Society. Read the assigned books, watch the documentaries associated with each test, do your assignments and research portfolios and you'll definitely get an A or at least a B. She's very helpful and wants everyone to do well in her class, additionally she wants everyone to have fun while learning!
Great Professor!!! She is a very compassionate and caring professor. She wants her students to do well. Do all the assignments and attend class. If I had to take over again I would do all assignments and ask more questions.
The professor encourages you to participate in class and voice your opinion. The problem is that if she doesn't agree with your opinions, she will discredit and argue with you and then she doesn't like you for the rest of the semester. Her tests are harder than they should be. She expects you to think like a sociologists while taking the test.
I don't understand why she doesn't have better reviews. Dr. Friedman is clear about what is expected for the class. The tests are easy if you go to class and hear her perspectives. There were only 3 exams, 2 easy projects, and 5 short assignments. Every once in a while, she even shows clips from Saturday Night Live and Key and Peele.
She is bad writing notes. She'll say half of the information and write the other half down so you're notes wouldn't really be complete. She also has bad hand writing so it's hard to read her notes. She is very sweet and very lenient but as a professor I don't think she's really fit for it. Her tests are hard if you don't know what you're doing.
She was nice. If you need help she's there for you. The class was pretty simple. Make sure to go to class a lot of the questions on the test are from the lectures and interactive class activities.
I do believe she is a good professor, however I barley passed this class because her notes and lectures are very ambiguous. I passed because I just studied the book more than her notes, but some of her notes, mainly references to videos and group assignments will be on the test. She is a tough grader too, and she doesn't explain things very well.
I was excited to take this class but she ruined it. First off her hand writing is terrible so you can't read anything she writes, especially feedback on assignments. Her lectures area all over the place, and she's never specific about what will be on tests. There are a few short assignments, 2 portfolios and 3 tests.
Just know her opinion is the only right one in her mind.
Dr. Friedman gives you the grade you earn. If she likes you she'll also go out of her way to help you especially if you show her you care. Her tests are easy if you go to class and most of her tests are on lecture or vocab from the textbook. I didn't even read the textbook I just studied the vocab at the end of each chapter.
Dr. Friedman is honestly one of the best, most caring professors I have ever had. Yes, she has her opinions, but this is a class where she is supposed to try to mold your thinking into the way a sociologist would think. She cares so much about the well-being of her students and goes out of her way to help. Her work is easy and well-graded.
Amazing! Love to have her again!
Dr. Friedman really cares about teaching sociology effectively; she is very passionate and does her best to get the classed engaged-- even a 9:30am class. The best way to study for tests is to review the notes taken in class, as most of the test questions depend on simply attending. She is willing to help absolutely anyone at any time. Very caring.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. She is so unclear about how she wants journals and projects to be. Half the class doesn't even show up. She just rambles the entire time. Elite Deviance should be an extremely interesting class and she just made it a drag. I somehow ended up with a C in a class that we didn't even have a test or quiz in.
I have mixed feelings bout Dr. Friedman. She's a brilliant researcher and knows her what she's talking about, but this class was just terrible. It was half the material being boring and half having a terrible class. I dont feel like I got the most out of this course
Research Methods. She doesn't really come to class with a plan but more just wants you to ask questions about the assignments that are due every couple weeks. This leads to her generally rambling to herself at the front of the class and getting frustrated because nobody knows what they need to do. I will say she is helpful in office hours
Horrible class and professor. Ended my semester with this class being my only B. The teacher is very confusing and all over the place with her lectures. The assignments are hard to understand. She is really smart and knows what she is talking about, but doesn't do a good at all teaching it. do NOT take her.
Dr. Friedman is an amazing professor. As long as you show up to class and put in the effort you will do great. She is very forgiving as well. She gives many opportunities to redo work, because she wants you to learn!
Professor Friedman is great. She is extremely knowlageable in her field, which I really like. You will leave wanting to be a better person.
So knowledgeable and intelligent. A definite must take class!
AMAZING. SO SMART.
Do not skip class. Lectures matter. She does lecture notes in class help you remember what was said. She is the sweetest little lady.
I really loved her class. She is so knowlageable with what she talks about. If you are ever confused you should definitely visit her during her office hours. She is such a sweet and helpful woman.
She does great lecture notes on what she talks about to ensure you do not forget the material. Very smart and kind.
Loved her. So sweet. A great choice.
She is very willing to help. After class or during her office hours she will explain everything to you. If you try she will make sure you pass.
She really wants you to learn the material. She will give you multiple opportunities on an assignment if you are struggling. As long as you come to class and put in the effort, she will be helpful.
The biggest drawback: NO use of rubrics. It is SO hard to construct papers without knowing how you are graded or what the professor is expecting. Be prepared to ask so many questions. She'll spend more time providing confusing examples than just telling you what she wants.
I have taken this professor for 3 courses and she is a great professor. She is a kind and passionate person. She is understanding but communication is key. Building a great professor and student relationship is easy with Professor Friedman.
She was. Great teacher. Those who dont listen, skip class, or arent willing to ask questions will not like it. She is so sweet.
Her lectures can be kind of boring but she's a really good professor and her assignments are really easy. Also, she's very lenient and accepts late assignments. Tests are all multiple choice and the questions are based on the notes she posts on canvas. This class is an easy A
Love her. she's the nicest professor. Class wasn't hard. Attendance isn't mandatory, but definitely show up as things talked about in class usually appear on exam. Take notes, and you will pass. There is little homework/actual assignments, so do the portfolios and well on the exams, and you will definitely pass.
Such a sweet lady. She really cares about the content and her students. Lets you redo assignments if you reach out with enough time before the end of the semester.
Such a sweet lady. She lets you redo assignments if you ask with enough time before the end of the semester.
I love Dr. Friedman!! If you need to be told exactly what to do and don't like to attend class you won't like this course. There aren't rubrics, but its research methods. There shouldn't be, there is no right answer! She lets you you redo assignments, just ask after she posts grades. Just pay attention and ask questions. You'll do well if you try!
It's obvious that Professor Friedman's goal is for every student to understand the material. As long as you make an effort, you can change your grade on an assignment by responding to her feedback and redoing it. She challenges you to apply your knowledge to a variety of social science research scenarios. I found myself overly anxious.
Very frustrating course. She gives vague instructions for assignments/discussions and then she is very critical of your work and isn't clear about what she wants you to change. Even though she leaves feedback it's often not very useful and you have to reach out to her for clarification. My near perfect GPA is gonna tank this semester. Lame.
difficult to communicate with. expects you to be able to meet on Microsoft teams if you want to talk. unclear grading criteria. very harsh grader but no rubrics?. very difficult to know what this professor wants. definitely do not recommend. not very accommodating.
If you did the reading I recommend skipping the lecture, she posts her notes anyway. She also clearly doesn't look into the sources she uses if she agrees with them. I counted at least 3 times she restated lies in class because she either didn't read the source she's citing or it was just plain wrong.
This is a terrible Teach to have she made a research class so boring she grades hard and only gives you a little bit of points for the the work you have to do. Feedback is unhelpful and i will simple never take a class with her being the teacher she made me hate school and want to drop out
Honestly, its not worth going to her class. Most of her classes are lecture heavy with no clear point as she sometimes rambles about things that don't really have a connection to the lecture. She posts her notes to the exams but you'll still need the textbook for her portfolio assignments. She gives real help other than restating the same stuff.
Fairly straightforward class if you learn through the textbook. Her lectures are a bit drawn out and dull. She only gives you one or two assignments a week though and they're relatively simple. Great teacher but needs more depth and life to her powerpoints. Would take her course online if I could.
Fairly easy class. She does posts the notes from the lectures on canvas. As long as you do the assignments and study the notes for the exam you will pass this class easily. She is also very understanding and willing to work with you as long as you communicate with her. The only way you would not pass this class is lack of effort and communication.
Inscrutable with assignment expectations. Assignments often ask you to generate your own questions and observations, but you will be graded harshly by her subjective interpretation of what "correct" questions should look like. Instructor's feedback isn't constructive, instead insisting that you are "confused" about the material.
Easily the worst professor I have ever had in my life. She grades based on her opinion and drops your grade when she disagrees with what you write, even if it's the course material. She cannot be reached outside class and only communicates via Canvas, which is ridiculously unprofessional. I recommend not taking courses offered by this professor.
Professor Friedman is inconsistent with grading as well as feedback. I provided extra detail in order to make my project more understandable for the audience, but was met with criticism for the specificity. Then, when I made my projects' contextual information more general, she also criticized me. Her lack of consistency was so frustrating
She took points off of my assignment and told me that I was incorrect regarding a fact that I used in one of my assignments. I wasn't. My fact was regarding something that she lacked experience in. I don't know how else to explain that just because a student knows something that you don't, it doesn't mean that it's wrong or made up. 🥴
Professor Friedman's SYG2000 class is fairly straightforward. Her lectures can be a bit dry, but the coursework is manageable. Utilizing the textbook, class notes, and tools like unstuck study for exam prep can help you succeed. Overall, a solid course option.
She is not too cool with flexibility so be prepared, strict grader and the projects count for a large portion of your grade. She does seem to be a kind and patient woman apart from that.
So close minded, and that's not a great trait. She only wants your open ended answers to be her perspective with VERY little guidance and if it's not, it's considered wrong. She goes back and forth with you on comments section so the assignment is almost never 'done' and it's like whatever you say is never enough.
I managed to get a good grade in this class because she lets you improve your work, but I have never been more mentally exhausted after a semester. I was constantly confused and questioning my intelligence based on her feedback. You can get a good grade, but if you want to actually learn and not be stressed 24/7 you need to take another professor.
