Dr Garner is brilliant but unforgiving. Too many external requirements for a 4 unit class. No study guide. Won't help u w HW b4 due. If holiday is day b4 exam, u won't get a review. If book isn't in =too bad. Not easy subj -it's Micro not SOC. But ext reqs to be active on VoiceThread & Peerwise r too much. Book, lect & ext reqs r free game 4 tests.
Micro is hard enough as it is. A teacher should be helpful which she is NOT you are expected to know the entire book she doesnt go off of her lecture notes. she is mean! probably gonna write to the dean about how garner needs a serious attitude adjustment and new teaching style, otherwise she needs to go back where she came from go take micro @ mp!
Cal Grad applying to accelerated BSN program. Only take DrG if you have no other classes & hate urself. Not ready 4 primetime as lab prof.Sits back, gives NO guidance & lets section flounder then gets mad when we bust time. True about her UNREAL HW reqs 4 lecture. Avoid at all costs-20% of my class switched to other profs. I should have joined them.
This professor is not a good teacher. This class is a twice a week MANDATORY lecture and lab, but the lectures are a waste of time, and the lab is all a BUNCH of busy work that only counts for a small portion of your grade. LOTS of online hw. Three separate online accounts are required and the book. Basically you teach yourself and do alot of hw.
Instructor was not helpful, there are no extra credit opportunities. She gives out study guides to "help" you get ready for the exams but they are useless. Too much online homework, expects a lot from students. I would recommend future micro students to take this class at a different campus.
Not a good professor. Gives too much online assignments that aren't really useful to this course. Makes you rewrite the lab manual onto your notebook which is a waste of money. Exams are confusing, study guides aren't helpful. Makes the subject not interesting due to her teaching methods. Harsh grader, I wouldn't recommend taking this professor.
You teach yourself but you still have to go to class to discuss, there are about 2 ch a week and you have to determine what is important. Lots of online work. Study guides are useless and only has 35 mult choice Qs per unit, 2 unknown 10pt essay Qs and a take home Q, tests every 3 weeks. The lab manual takes up time that could be spent studying.
You earn what you work for. Exams are take home exams that really make you understand the hows and whys organism function the way they do. If you have a question in any part of the material you can email her she responds faster than my friends usually do. Professor Garner really knows the material she is covering. The material is hard itself
You should ONLY take this 1 class if you want to do well. Yes, it is a lot of work but it's Microbiology. I only took 2 classes this time & I wish I had only focused on this class. Quizzes and tests are online & fair but difficult none the less. Typically I am an A student & right now I have a B. Be prepared to WORK-fair though.
I took this class last semester and again this semester. I defiantly recommend this class the layout of the class has improved to help students learn. Chapter tests and unit tests are all online, yes it is a challenging class and a lot of work but if you are expecting nursing to be easy you have to rethink your schooling choices!
She has improved a lot. I am in her class this semester and feel it is easier than physiology-definitely take her. She has a great teaching method and you really learn a lot!
Dr. Garner is very organized and offers quite a bit in the way of study guides and other resources to complete assignments and pass exams. She has high expectations of her students. She is not going to hold her student's hands, but if you need help, she is always available. I highly recommend her if you are willing to commit the time and effort.
Dr. Garner is an excellent instructor. I had an honest fear of microbiology and have really come to like the content and retained most of the information. This is all due to the teaching style Dr. Garner uses. This course is tough, however, all information for lecture and lab is laid out for you via D2L, and allows you to be prepared prior to class
Dr. Garner is a really good teacher. The comments from previous students had me a little worried but she was a great teacher. She's very passionate about the subject and makes it very interesting. I think her way of issuing tests was the most efficient than anything else.
very tough! you must attend class and you must put in the time and effort. very time consuming so be organized. very kind and helpful instructor. high expectations.
Her communication through D2L about course material is excellent & ahead of time. Homework is easy, relevant to class information & very helpful to pass tests. For every classchapter she prepares & gives set of notes with most importan info + she offers workshops prior to every test to review the content of it; therefore, there is no way to fail
Enthusiastic, Fun, and so difficult. Her test are only easy is you really study. Overall, I loved her. She made my 8am class bearable and I dig her notes. Just expect an expensive textbook and lots of trick questions on tests.
Class is a TON of work but it is microbiology. It is a hard subject but definitely do-able if you have the time to put into it. Tests are short answer, diagram, and flow-chart making so you REALLY need to know the material to do well. D2L is used heavily but the online resources are good. She is willing to help if you are willing to ask.
Dr. Garner is a very good teacher that will make your experience memorable. She is in no way easy, but she is very fair. She will work with you and help you in any way, but it's all up to you. I work a full time job and I have a family which makes it difficult and tough. I only passed because she is a remarkable and self sacrificing teacher.
Very knowledgeable. ApproachableAccessible. Helpful. Kind. EnthusiasticPassionate. Participation matters. Tests focus on concepts & application of material covered, but know proper terms. Tests: short answer with DiagramsTablesComparison Charts. Utilize text, study guide, lec. notes & PPT slides. Lab takes good time management and prep work.
Professor Garner's class was one of my most dreaded this last semester. She was filled with such enthusiasm and her genuine desire for you to learn and understand the fun world of Microbiology. Her grading can be tough you do need to study and go to class but I did get caught up in wanting to know and understand more of this subject.
This professor is unrealistic for this type of class. Goes into great detail on things that do not matter. Give a very basic overview and expects details on a blank test. Tough grader with too much work for the semester! You've been warned! Prepare to have no life and she will answer your question with a question.
15 chapter quizes, huge unknown report, 5 case studies, 5 Unit exams which are NOT multiple choice. Two chapters a week with minimal detail. This class is a beast. If you want to take on a massive challenge then take this class but prepare for the worst!
This class is absolute garbage. 95% of the people taking this class are going into nursing and yet she teaches the class as if everyone is going to be a biotech major. Taking this class with her will never prepare you for nursing and her grading and overall attitude sucks. She expects you to know every detail about unnecessary things.
Tough class..... Nuff said....
this class was the hardest class I've ever taken in my life! this teacher is absolutely ridiculous with her tests. she expects way too much from her students & I would not recommend her to anyone. the exams are all critical thinking questions that are ridiclouuuuuus! & lab exams are memorization way toooo much work required for this class!
Dont drop the class just because you feel scared! Come talk to her and she will show you the way to pass the class. She gives extra credits to push up your grade. Her lectures and assignments were good for nursing, they all involve in medical field. Her tests are challenging but you dont need to be exact, she grades you on your understanding.
Great teacher who truly cares for her students and knows what she is talking about! She relates a lot of the material to stories that help you obtain information. Just show up, take good notes and pay attention. I got a C because I slakced towards the end but I def could've gotten an A if I just studied for ALL exams.
Jennifer Garner is one of the best professors at Ventura College. I took her for microbiology, it is a very challenging class but she makes it fun and interesting. The tests are challenging but study and you WILL be fine. She tests you on what you know. Also, be sure to take notes! Study the lecture notes, and read the textbook! Great class!
If you're going into the medical field this professor will definitely prepare you.
Absolutely recommend her. She gives you everything you need to succeed in her class and does a great job connecting it to nursing via case studies. I really enjoyed her class. Go to lecture! Practically everything you need for every exam is straight forward from her lecture and her awesome video lectures also help a lot!
LECTURE HEAVY TOUGH GRADER This class is a complete waste of time. The majority of students will be going into nursing and yet she teaches the class as if everyone is going to be a micro biologist. Taking this class with her will never prepare you for nursing and her grading and attitude sucks. She expects you to comprehend irrelevant nonsense!
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever taken!!!! Her tests are super hard! !! They are all about drawing concept maps and explaining the how and not the what. She makes you write a lab procedures before you get to class. Awful at explaining stuff. Talks down to you. Is completely rude! take another teacher if you want to have a good life!
The course is very lecture heavy and you have to read! She does mini quizzes online for every chapter and the answers are not always covered in lecture. She challenges you to think critically and answer the "how?" The unit tests are all written, no multiple choice. Show up to lecture and be ready to pay attention. A very difficult class.
This professor is AMAZING, and the only reason you wouldn't do well in her class, is because you don't put in the time. Her lectures are awesome, and she has no problem explaining if you don't understand. Attending class is a MUST. I wish there were more teachers out there like her.
You have to make sure to read. She requires a lot of thinking. Tests are open questions not multiple choice. Requires online feedback of topics she posts. Labs are time sensitive so make sure to prepare ahead of time and know what you are doing. You have an unknown organism report. Get to work and ask help if you need it. Lecture doesn't cover all.
Microbiology with Garner is not hard at all, but you do have to put in work! Her tests are fill in the blank, drawing pictures, scenarios, PICTURES... you actually have to know the subject to pass her tests. I failed 3 exams, but I still passed the class with a B!!! She offers a lot of extra credit... to pass just watch her lecture videos!!!
Professor Garner is passionate about science and teaching. She is tough but she is always available to help or answer any questions. Watch her lecture videos on Canvas, read the chapters, pay attention in class and prepare in advance. Doing well in this class is completely up to you! She gives you many opportunities to receive extra credit, too!
Micro is difficult and everyone knows that. So do your self a favor and take Dr. Garner! Her exams are short answer, diagrams and concept maps. Sounds scary at first, but guess what, you actually learn your material and remember it!! She wants her students to learn the subject. Watch her videos on canvas, they help a lot and do her objectives.
At first, I was intimidated by the free response test however they allow you to demonstrate your knowledge & understanding of the topics. She provides you with all the tools needed to succeed & understand microbiology. Shes available during office hours & offers other resources for extra help (e.g. tutorial videos). Im so glad I took her class!
I was fearful that Micro was going to be an extremely tough class, but it became my strongest science class, due to Dr. Garner's teaching style. If you truly invest in her way of learning, an A is very attainable. You have to invest time and energy, but she will always be open with her very reasonable expectations. Honestly, a wonderful professor!
Save yourself the trouble, and just take someone else. She's just awful and rude and her teaching style sucks. Her tests are NOT multiple choice, but drawing diagram. I ended up taking the class at Moorpark college. It sucks shes the only one who teaches Micro in the day for VC, they should hire another professor. I hated every second of her class.
I emailed her a lot of times to figure out that I didn't understand, what she did were sending youtube URL or saying read a book again. What's worse, she just skipped my questions. I'm still waiting for her answer. Her way to grading is so unclear. Oh, she help students depending on who they are. If she doesn't like you, then no help from her.
If you don't open ur mind to her style of teaching this class will be extremely difficult but if you put in the work from DAY ONE it will be an easy A There are lecture videos online, reading guides to follow the book, and her tests are not multiple choice. You have to draw concept maps connecting the 2-3 chapters which helps full grasp the ideas
This teacher is so caught up in trying to teach in a "different" way, a lot of Microbiology is lost. She wasted much class time showing videos of her opinionated way of teaching/learning, and it was not helpful. But the worst part about her and this class, was that she was incredibly condescending when you asked her question, specifically in lab.
Best teacher ever. She designed the course very effectively!!! Watch her videos and take good notes and draw everything from her videos. Read the text. Her videos help by answering ch. exams so take good notes! Don't depend on anyone. She easy! Very easy tracer and a good person. I learned so much from her and she so inspirational!
Very unique class/professor. I struggled a bit but still managed to get an A. Definitely study a lot, she does a great job of providing the means to do so, I wish I took better advantage of that. She's very enthusiastic (which helped make the morning a little more bearable), eccentric, surprisingly religious (lol) but still very open-minded & kind.
In order for her to like you, you need to show you understand or know the material. There were days she was nice and other times she had her moods where it was scary to even ask her a question. Her class was super difficult. To be honest I did not learn a thing.
She gets frustrated easily and becomes condescending. She is very strict and will yell at you for not following directions (she has too many directions). Her exams are hard and some questions can be convoluted, AND don't even try negotiating for points even if you are right, only 10 points extra credit. I regret taking her, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE, RUN.
This class is suited for those who want to go into biology or micro. If you want to do good, you better have taken ochem and cell bio and have good microscopy skills. If you just want to get into a medical program like nursing or whatever, save yourself the trouble and take this class at oxnard or somewhere else. And Its true that she is rude.
She is very passionate about the subject which is cool. Also very knowledgeable so you can trust what she's teaching. Has a unique teaching style and is actually a really great teacher. Her class is definitely challenging, but I would 110% recommend taking it in the summer time - from what I've heard, it is infinitely easier!
Professor Garner is super smart. She is passionate about Micro and wants you to learn the big idea! Garner's lab, however, in my opinion, had overly stringent grading criteria. The lab practical exams are worth too many points and are extremely nerve inducing. Make sure you know how to use your microscope. WATCH HER VIDEOS AND DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.
If you're planning on going into a health-related field, this is the class for you. This is a very tough class, but it prepares you well for what you'll experience in grad school. Her exams are challenging, but they're only worth about 30% of your grade and there are tons of easy ways to boost your grade. Put in the effort, and you'll succeed.
Positives- lectures are interesting, and lab assignments are fun. Negatives- no "real" extra credit, can be condescending, whistles extremely loud in lab if you do something wrong, exams are hard, and she gives unclear directions for first lab exam. I would not recommend this teacher if you have anxiety!
She takes off 7 points during lab exams if you don't use the microscope correctly and 5 points if you leave oil on the microscope or slides. She micromanages, meaning she walks around like she is a Sargent during lab exams and lab in general too. She has mood swings, happy one day, rude the other. Take the new evening prof, her name starts with Y.
This is the last science course for my major and I was expecting it to be hard, but Garner makes the class easy. Don't get me wrong the class itself is a bit difficult, but she provides chapter videos to help you understand the ch and she also provides tutorial lab videos. Her class is taught using real world situations with case studies.
THE MOST CARING PROFESSOR. You'll learn in this class! It is all about group activity and in class discussion. This isn't your typical class because she brings in real life situations which is great because this is one of last science I need to enter my nursing program. She has PROFESSIONAL tutorial videos for lecture & lab! So HELPFUL!
This class has lots of chapter quizzes and tests to work for your grade. By using all the resources she provides it shouldnt be hard to pass the class. Watch the tutorial videos and take lots of notes. THEY HELP. Create informative notes, collaborate, and prepare for exams and chapter quizzes. Stay on top of the work and earn every point you can.
Professor Garner is an awesome instructor. General Microbiology is a challenging course simply due to the subject matter, but she designs the course to make comprehension and success as obtainable as possible. Just like any upper division science course, you must study and do the work. I thoroughly enjoyed her class.
She was VERY strict but very knowledgeable and nice. She did group quizzes which really helped understand the material and I'm not the one to like interacting with others but it was enjoyable. Not too much homework at all just the right amount to learn your stuff. I loved how well structured her class was!
Please remember that this is an upper level science class and your ticket into many competitive programs; this is NOT an easy class but, that has nothing to do with Dr Garner! She is more than fair and you will get out the effort you put in. She truly cares about her students. You MUST read the book and show up to lecture.
Microbiology is a hard class. Even though it is online it makes it harder because its self taught. You basically have to read the book and she has recorded lectures but they don't really go into detail. Labs are even harder at home. Exams are study cases and apply in real life type of scenarios. Every point counts! so study and don't procrastinate.
SO MANY ASSIGNMENTS. This class is very time consuming especially with how many assignments she gives. It can easily get very overwhelming but an A is definitely feasible. She's very friendly and approachable. She frequently has office hours for questions. She knows her way around zoom. There are recorded lectures. No proctorio. Some extra credit.
This was my only option I had no choice than to take professor Garner. I think her class is very difficult also her grading isn't the best. She goes by points which makes it confusing, don't go by the percentage! She only gives you 30 minutes for 20 question test! its micro so obviously the questions are hard and complex.
She makes her test questions unnecessarily long and puts a very short time limit on it as well. She claims that this is because the questions on the teas are this length but that's simply not true. The teas science questions are short and straightforward which makes this practice very unnecessary.
This class is tough, but you just have to put the work in and you'll be fine. Getting an A isn't that hard, just make sure to submit ALL assignments before the due date. She gives out extra credit for taking notes on the book and the practice chapter quizzes are SUPER helpful. Zoom was optional and posted lecture videos tells you what to focus on.
The subject is tough but this prof makes it even harder. We spent each day wasting time going over rules instead of actually talking about the important stuff. The exams have nothing to do with what she talks about and the previous reviews are not reliable. If I could I would take this subject with someone else.
This class is a mess. The Professor cares too much about our personal study methods. She should not be guilt tripping her students to do notes her way. On zoom she acts like she is teaching a 3rd grade class.. we are grown adults treat us like one. Maybe she should add that to her class civility rules. Dont take her unless you want to be degraded
This is the most unorganized class I have ever ever taken. The most intrusive person I have ever came across. The labs are self taught and the majority aren't even updated so it makes it a puzzle for you to figure out on your own. She acts like she cares but if she did she wouldn't waste so much time with her q&a sessions and talking about nonsense
Do not take this professor. She is so nice when the class starts, is very helpful, and caring, but one week later she won't help a fly. Her zoom meetings are BEYOND POINTLESS! You learn how to take Cornell notes and how to be nice to others for 3 hours. I feel like I am in Elementary school all over again, except she doesn't give out gold stars!
This class is the WORST. I am currently in the summer session. The zooms are q&a sessions yet the professor doesnt answer any relevant questions. All she talks about are her principals of civility. She treats us like children. VC needs a new Microbiology teacher.
She gave me the hardest time and I wasn't getting much help . For labs , she throws it at you and expect everything to come out perfect , and doesn't want any error no matter what . She doesn't reply to your emails and once she does , she sends a long message that doesn't relate to your question . So don't bother emailing her about anything .
Was literally in this class for a day before dropping it. Please take Microbiology with any other professor INSTEAD OF HER! The amount of work she gives is ridiculous and so is her expectation for students to be present on Zoom. The funny thing is her live lectures are anything but helpful and necessary. I feel bad for anyone in this classs.
Professor Gardner replies to your email fast. Her lectures are long but very interesting. A lot of reading and homework, but she grades fairly. I took her for the summer; we had two exams, four discussion boards with replies, and four quizzes per week, and I got a B+. As long as you do your homework, you will passshe cares about her students.
Hardest class Ive took so far. SMH
I took microbiology over the summer and it was not easy. . The things we learn in this class are detrimental to our success in medical fields and I feel more prepared. She is very clear in grading and offers extra credit so that helps a lot. It is easy to get an A as long as you read the material, follow her chapter outlines, and watch the lectures
Easy A
I took her in fall 2019 before covid. The class is easy but her attitude makes this class difficult. Just understand and memorize her videos, both for lec and lab and you should be good, book not really needed. I must say, she put in a lot of effort to structure her class, I just wished her personality was better.
Was a little skeptical about taking this class with all the bad reviews, but ended up taking 6 week summer class. Take her! Its doable. Sometimes she does talk a lot and has many group discussions in her Zoom meetings. Just have to make sure you do your assignments and you should be good. No proctored tests.
terrible professor! Please don't take any class with her.
As a professors she is great and kind, but the class is difficult. For tests, you only get 45 minutes for free response questions. Its a very time consuming class, but if you put in the work you can easily pass it. She provides a lot of help if you are struggling and will help you reach your goals. Shes amazing, just be prepared to work!
She would probably be great for in-person and is really nice and accessible, but this wasn't a concise online class. Synchronous lectures are 1hr15 twice/week and not related to exams. Mostly do group work in break out rooms that is for 1 pt extra credit. There are so many long pre-recorded lectures and they didn't prepare me for the exam Q's.
It was the exams for me. Straight A's til this frustrating class. Focused on trying to navigate through random learning websites during zoom. Said "focus on the science" yet teaching it was not a priority. Encourages using the tutor over teaching. Lectures are uninspiring and forgettable. And her exam grading/expectations are RIDICULOUS! SoDrained.
This class is SO much work. Get ready to spend AT LEAST 10+ hours per week on this class. The material is not that difficult to understand and the tests are very straight forward. However, having a different lab every single week gets to be way too much with all of the lecture. But, an A is very doable if you stay on top of the assignments.
For a micro class, this was extremely doable and straightforward. Watch the lecture videos and print your notes. The test consist of two questions and you must explain each answer including the wrong ones. Stay on top of the work because there are assignments every week but they are not hard. She's extremely nice and doesnt grade hard. Love jen.
I took her online summer 6week it wasnt hard you just have to stay on top of assignments. Unit exams every week and labs. Mandatory zoom. Drops lowest exam grade. Extra credit. Exams are your own knowledge. Answers emails very quickly. Purchase a lab kit which is around $300 has everything u need and the college lets you borrow a microscope
Positive things is she cares about the subject, students, respond to emails, and is a fair grader. This class is a TON of work. I wouldn't recommend taking any other class unless you're a full time student with no job or family.Once a unit ends something else immediately opens up. None of it is very hard it just very time consuming if you want an A
Professor Garner is an amazing professor that cares about the subject. HOWEVER, the class is a lot of work if you want to get an A you really need to be on top of things. I would not recommend taking this class with other heavy classes. If it helps I work full time and have kids too so you can totally do. YOU CANNOT PROCRASTINATE
This professor will not answer your questions with a direct answer, any answer you do give are wrong, she loves to hear herself repeat the same information. Lectures are 45 min videos of herself talking with one question at the end. 24 students to start 13 by the end. She request the students to teach not herself. Her mean grades are about 3.5/10.
This class is a ridiculous amount of work. Much more work than an in person class would be so you might as well take that. Synchronous mandatory zooms are a waste of time, you don't go over any material. Assigns up to 13 30-45 minute video lectures with quizzes per week. Labs are fun, but the class itself is info overload in the worst way possible.
Grading isn't consistent if you follow the rule brick she will find a way to take points off. If you don't agree with your grade she will argue with you in your assignment comments. She sends private messages between 8pm and 11pm including weekends. Very vague in answering questions and zoom had nothing to do with the course.
Assignments come w pages of unnecessary instructions. I took information directly from the textbook (in my own words of course) and she told me I was wrong. Insane amount of weekly lectures that are 20-45 min in length. Total abuse of the flexibility provided via online classes. Zooms are dumb- basically mandatory office hours bc she doesnt lecture
Professor Garner is an absolute gem! The work is heavy but manageable. This class is unlike any other and will definitely have you thinking critically. The first module will be different, considering she has a different way of conducting her class. Professor Garner is genuinely a great professor and is very understanding. Take her class if you can!
She is very knowledgable, but makes you feel dumb when you ask something. I learned so much academically, but she assigns 5+ 45min+ videos a week to watch, chapter readings, plus lab every week. She lectures for an hour before we start lab. I felt super anxious before going to class bc I felt dumb asking stuff, I did speak to the board due this.
This class is a lot of work, with mandatory Zoom lectures and frequent video assignments. But the professor is caring and responsive - Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep. Overall, it's challenging but manageable if you stay on top of things.
