Dr. Gates-Foster is a great professor and is very clear about her expectations! I personally liked her a lot, but if you are not interested in the subject matter, you may want to reconsider.
Gates-Foster is the most intimidating professor you will ever meet. Only take her class if you are willing to work your ass off for a decent grade and like to read. This lady means business and will not take any BS
JGF is one of the most engaging, funny, and effective lecturers I've had at UNC. However, her tests are unreasonably difficult and require and immense amount of studying to even get a B. If you love archaeology and want to take a great course and learn a lot, I highly recommend her. If you want even a respectable GPA, STEER CLEAR.
If you love anything to do with ancient Rome, this will be a very cool class for you. However, going to class is absolutely essential to doing well; and the tests are hard--though they are fair. I highly suggest this class/teacher if you are a classics or archaeology major/minor, if you love ancient Rome, and are willing to work hard.
Jen is an amazing professor and gives amazing lectures. She always gives very clear criteria for assignments though her attendance policy is very strict (only one excused absence). That being said she's incredibly passionate about the course material and really wants all of her students to succeed, but she does make you work for it.
Although I am sure Professor GF is a respected and great researcher, she is not a great teacher. Although she is knowledgeable, there is WAY too much info covered in the class. She's extremely strict (no computers, no phones, sign in everyday) and expects you to memorize so much info as well as digest it. One of my hardest classes
Excellent professor, but you need to like history, classics, and archaeology.
She expects you to remember the name, date, location, and multiple historical and artistic significances for each artifact. each test has at least 100 possible artifacts, and she only asks you about 10 to 15 obscure artifacts on the test. No easy way to study except memorize lecture notes, assuming you've transcribed her lecture points verbatim.
I loved Gates-Foster with my whole heart. I took this as a required class for my major, and I learned so much from this class. You have to go to class because attendance is required, but the exams and papers are very straight forward.
Gates-Foster is super knowledgeable about this material and can answer almost any question and her office hours are really helpful. Her exams are definitely not easy and require advanced studying, but if you put the time in, you'll see the benefits. Gates-Foster is a great lecturer and although attendance is mandatory, lectures are interesting!
She is my favorite professor of freshman year! She is very generous in terms of grading. Very interesting lecture!
Oof, you're in for a ride. Professor Gates-Foster's class is not impossible, but you'll have to work. If you're looking for an easy A, this ain't it. She's a great lecturer and is profoundly knowledgeable about her subject, but she can be intimidating. The reading test/quizzes are hard, even after reading everything, because of the depth of info.
Professor Gates-Foster is intimidating, yet amazing. Her lectures never bore you and she is always happy to answer your questions. Just don't sleep or text in her class or she will call you out in front of the whole class. This class isn't an easy A, but if you show up to lecture and read, you will pass. She will do everything to help you.
Interesting lectures though there's a lot of reading and info to take in. If you're willing to do the reading and enjoy the subject, history, the major etc. you'll probably be fine. It would also help to have good visual memory, as tests focus largely on recalling objects for analysis and/or comparison.
Dr. Gates-Foster is an amazing lecturer. She's very knowledgeable about the topic and makes it so that if you have no background on Roman history or architecture, you still understand the material. This class was a lot of reading though, and the tests are short answer format with an essay. Definitely have to study a lot, but very interesting.
Professor Gates-Foster is amazing! She is super knowledgeable about the topics and has archaeological experience (sometimes even showed her own pictures). You have only one 4 pg double-spaced paper which she gives you plenty of time to write. There's reading quizzes but other than that you don't have to read at all to do well, just take good notes!
She is an amazing lecturer. Her lectures are fluid and makes the topic interesting. That said, she also makes the class difficult. For exams, she is very nit-picky and requires a lot of dates and images to be memorized. This class was harder than my chem 102 and neuro 175 class. This isn't an easy gen ed. She's a tough grader. Lots of memorizing.
Gates-Foster is ridiculously intelligent and has an immense amount of arch. experience in Egypt. There isnt anyone better to teach this class. However, it is NOT easy. It requires a lot of memorization of visual things so if you are not a visual learner this isnt for you. I studied 20 hrs for each midterm and 50 hrs for the final for barely an A
Professor Gates-Foster is genuinely passionate about archaeology. The lectures are the most meaningful when you read and think critically about assignments. Her grading is tough, but she clearly outlines her expectations and is willing to meet with you if you need help. She is a great professor who has her students' best interests at hand.
JGF is a great professor who creates engaging discussions out of semi-interesting topics. I didn't realize the work I needed to put in at the beginning, but its very rewarding to engage in class and actually learn. She grades papers very hard but will always help clarify any topics needed. enjoyed going to class everyday and highly recommend her
JGF is an amazing professor--but be warned her classes are hard (I have taken 2). The exams are tough and there is no way to avoid studying for them. She manages to make interesting lectures on topics that may be less than engaging, and she cares about how her students do. Be warned though, she still makes her students work for their grade.
No need to do the daily readings if you listen in class. Lectures are a slideshow of a ton of images while shes talking about them. You should write down everything she says bc for the test, youll have to know any image shes shown and regiurgutate all the highlights. It is TOUGH but doable if youre good at memorization. Very knowledgeable prof
Prof. Gates-Foster is incredible! A gifted lecturer who knows how to make the material accessible to non-majors. The class was super interesting and she even brought pictures from her own archaeological digs!
Classes are difficult, and many including me find her intimidating. The tests especially are hard. At least for this class, you had to memorize tons of sites, artifacts, and information. I learned a lot, though, so I guess it works. I'm usually a straight-A student, and I got a B+.
Prof. Gates-Foster is extremely knowledgable and her lectures are both informative & interesting. Yes, her classes do require a lot of memorization to pass exams, but she is not a hard grader. If you are interested in the course material, I would definitely take her class.
The Tests and Quizzes are unreasonably detailed and she offers little guidance before you sit down to take them.
Took this class to satisfy gen ed credits since it looked interesting. Basically the most memorizing you could possibly imagine. Take only if you enjoy studying for unrealistic amounts of time or have a photographic memory.
I took this class as an elective and regret it every day. She assigns 30+ pages of textbook reading before each class that you have to do because there are 7 unannounced pop quizzes on the readings throughout the semester. Quizzes are only 5 questions so u miss one and get an 80. This class is an elective it should not be this work-heavy.
I took this as a gen ed because I thought it would be interesting. Sure, the topic is cool but not so much when you've got 25+ page readings and pop quizzes. Lecture slides are just a series of photos and you are responsible for memorizing everything Dr. Gates-Foster says to regurgitate on the tests.
Gates-Foster is a great lecturer, organized, and clear in her instructions. She conveys the information in interesting ways, and her experience as an archaeologist makes the lectures very personal (she speaks from experience, not just head knowledge). The class requires lots of memorization, but I could not imagine taking it with anyone else.
Do NOT take this class for a gen ed. Too much work for nothing.
Prof. Gates-Foster's lectures were incredibly engaging and always left me wanting to hear more. Both she and the TAs were very accessible and helpful. A lot of scattered pop quizzes, but if you do the reading, it is alright. Definitely a LOT of memorization, like specific locations, styles, etc., so if that isn't your cup of tea, I might avoid.
Professor Gates-Foster is an incredibly knowledgable and interesting person, and her lectures were super engaging. But, the class came with a lot of memorizing and reading. If you are interested in Egypt and archeology, definitely take it, it's a great detailed overview, but it does require a good amount of studying.
This course was interesting, however, the information presented was in excess. She provided almost no guidance in terms of properly studying for exams and assignments despite the exams containing a multitude of memorization. DO NOT take this course for a GEN-ED or minor, it is reading heavy (40 pages) and you must study too extensively to pass.
Professor Foster is a really nice individual and easy to reach out to, but taking this class is easily the biggest mistake I've made at UNC. Yes, the Gen Ed credits look appealing, but studying for hours on end in order to get by isn't the best feeling I've experienced. Find a different class to fill gen-ed credits PLEASE.
This class was a intro gen-ed but super difficult and covered so much material to be tested on so little of it. I don't recommend this class unless you are very interested in the material.
Tests were worth 60% of your overall grade and the final was worth an additional 25% of the grade. Homework was only worth 15% of the overall grade and there was only 4-5 assignments all semester so the only way to pass the class is to do good on the test which is almost impossible given the amount of material is covered. I hated this class.
Professor Foster makes lectures interesting to listen to, BUT this class is hard if you are taking it for a gen-ed credit. You are graded by two midterms, a few reading quizzes, and a final. Tests require hours of studying for because the info is very detailed and requires memorization. Overall, learned a lot but definitely not worth the stress.
Took this class as a gen ed credit (keep in mind I'm an art history minor and have been interested in ancient egypt since childhood) and it was easily more work than every other class combined. Although she worked with us this year due to the events at the beginning of the year, this class is way too difficult to be worth taking. stay away
Simply do not take this class for Gen Ed. Requires hours of meticulous studying. Pop quizzes worth 25% of the grade, so you have to do constant readings. Only what she lectures on is on the test, so can't miss any lectures, PowerPoints are unhelpful. Easily more work than any other class I've taken at UNC. She tests on details rather than concepts.
Dr. Gates-Foster is extremely knowledgeable about the subject and very responsive. Most students should probably avoid taking this class simply to fulfill GenEds. Take it if you are actually interested in Egypt architecture and mythology. Otherwise, you will be unhappy by the amount of reading and study required to succeed in the course.
Don't (DO NOT) take this class if you are just trying to fill a gen ed. It was an excessively insane amount of material that is way too much to memorize. The class would've been more interesting if it wasn't so incredibly detailed. I cannot stress it enough that taking this class was one of my biggest mistakes ever.
Tests are based on memorization of details (of which there were many, and little of which were actually written on slides so you have to take really careful notes). The material is interesting, but it is far more work than it's worth if you aren't genuinely into ancient Egypt.
You MUST attend lectures and pay attention during class to succeed. She is very passionate about Egypt and it is clear in her lectures as they were always interesting. The class was not easy but not impossible, it takes a lot of time but in the end, I would take this class again!
She was a really thorough professor but her lecture slides were often somewhat vague and you really have to note every little thing she says about specific artifacts and sites. The class was very interesting having known nothing about ancient Egypt. I now know more than I wanted to. I had to make a 117pg doc of every artifact and note to study!
I really enjoyed this class and professor, but it takes a lot of work/studying to do well. Do not take this class if you're only interested in the GenEds or you have a heavy load! Tests are based on her lectures (don't miss them!) and there are pop quizzes on the readings.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She is nice but her lectures are so so so boring and her slides are not helpful at all. You basically have to memorize everything she says in class in order to do well on the tests. There is so much reading for no reason. Every question on the tests were just tiny detais she discussed for 10 seconds.
She is a very nice lady but the tests, which make up most of the grade, are so so difficult. slides have no information and even with going to every lecture and taking good notes, i still felt as though there is way too much material covered and the tests are extremely specific. Not consistent with 100 level courses and not worth for the gened.
She's a great professor and I loved the class, but be warned, this will not be an easy gen-ed. I took this class for my major and found it very helpful, so I was annoyed how much people who were taking it for a gen-ed complained; the tests are hard and that's most of your grade but if you show up and study, you'll get an A.
I really liked the subject matter and found it interesting. However, this class requires a lot of reading and a lot of your grade is made up of hard midterms. You will have to study a ton for them. Professor Gates Foster is extremely knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. Attendance is optional, but you will not pass if you don't go.
test content is lecture and overall information heavy, but the lectures she gives covers content well and aren't super dry. start studying earlier than the week of the exam and use the textbook for supplemental reading to get an A
I really enjoyed this class and her lectures. This class is definitely not an easy A. There was a lot of material we needed to know for each exam, and the final is really lengthy and covers a lot of content.
For being a 100 level course there is a lot of material you need to memorize. Lectures are long and packed with a lot information you're expected to memorize. In my opinion this should not have been a 100 level course.
She's a really nice professor, but the class is very difficult. The class is basically graded by three exams: two midterms and a final. For each exam, you are expected to memorize so many details about the material. The study guides I made were about 20 pages per exam, and I struggled to memorize everything. Not worth the Gen-Ed.
Dr. Gates is very passionate about what she teaches and you can tell she is good at what she does. Her lectures are amazing, but the thing to know is that her exams contains a lot of material. You have to memorize a lot of information(bout 10 google doc pages very exam). With that being said she is a lenient grader and does care about our wellbeing
This was one of the most interesting courses I have taken at UNC so far. I can see how the amount of content and the difficulty of the tests (blue book, memorization) would be off-putting to someone taking the class for a gen ed, but I really enjoyed this course. Dr. Gates expects a lot out of students, but is reasonable, knowledgeable, and caring
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A GE! While the lecture material may be interesting, the tests make this class very hard to do well in. 100% memorization to the smallest detail mentioned in class. A general understanding of the material is not good enough to do well. Iit will be impossible to do well without attending class. DONT TAKE IT
Prof. Gates-Foster is very no nonsense but she cares about all of her students and outlines her grading criteria very clearly. All you need to do is attend lecture and take good notes, study guides are also helpful. She cracked a few jokes that I thought were quite funny, and as a teacher its very clear she wants you to succeed.
Not worth the gen-ed!!!! This class was so hard for no reason. TONS of things covered in every lecture and she wants you to memorize all of it for the tests. Which is all written response. Have to memorize pictures too. Not worth the work. Hated the material, overall she is a nice person teaching a bad class. Avoid this class if possible!!!!!!
She cares about every little detail and there are so many readings that make no sense and tests that are graded on the smallest details. Would not recommend this course (borders and boundaries). Honestly take any other IDST triple I course for gen eds.
Worst class to take for a Gen Ed. For a 100 level class she treats it like we are in grad school or something. Many quizzes and test are crazy hard. She expects you to know every little detail about every picture, architecture, or statue. WOULD NOT TAKE unless you want a challenge.
DO NOT TAKE BORDERS AND BOUNDARIES. Save yourself time and energy, this gen ed is not worth it. Extremely boring and time-consuming for no reason. Professor Gates-Foster has no respect or empathy for her students and expects freshmen to treat this gen ed as if its their entire career. A LOT of reading (50-100 pages) and nit-picky quizzes 2x a week.
While a great professor, I would not recommend taking this triple-i. She often assigns long, complicated, and tangentially related readings that do not seem on the same level as the course, and while very organized and clear, her material is very boring and specific (especially for a gen ed).
This is one of the worst gen eds you can take. If Borders and Boundaries please do not take the class. The class is lecture heavy and involves a quiz due before every class. Also, the professors half the time repeat material from previously lectures that is identical to previous lectures.
If you have to take a Triple-I, DO NOT DO BORDERS AND BOUNDARIES!! Not even if you like history or the Middle East, do not take it. While Gates isn't a bad lecturer, she can be quite condescending. There is a quiz before every class and you are expected to read long passages before them. AVOID THIS CLASS.
This class sucked but Professor Foster was probably the best lecturer of the three. Her portion of the content was also interesting. She probably assigned the most reading and had some fairly specific questions about them on midterms and reading quizzes. I would recommend a different Triple-I but this wasn't the worst experience
People are def exaggerating how bad she is and how bad b&b is. there was definitely a lot of reading, but if u used command f to search the pdf for quizzes it was fine. she was the most engaging lecturer of the three and I liked her topic. exam wasn't too bad, but definitely specific. 100% need to put forth a good amount of effort
Out of all three professors in this course, Jennifer was the most accessible and interesting. She was responsive to her email and willing to help out when there was an issue.
Gates-Foster was knowledgeable about her field but could come off as arrogant/disrespectful. IDST-190 was painful. Up to 60-page readings and 5-question 10-minute quizzes before every class, & the midterm was awful. Assuming they even keep Triple-Is around after this semester, do yourself a favor by trusting these reviews, and don't take this one.
Professor Gates-Foster was the epitome of a "college professor" (from what I would expect), she was very professional in the way she presented herself but could come across as too stern. There was also an outlandish amount of reading (especially for a triple-I course) often 50+ pages in one night. Good professor, but difficult and not for everyone.
hated this class with a passion, she was my least favorite teacher, had the most vague concepts to remember, however she is an amazing lecturer, called out someone for sleeping in a 300+ person class, and called people out for coming in late
Most people are greatly exaggerating the difficulty of this class. There are a lot of readings, but the grading is comically generous. Gates-Foster is a good lecturer and generally choose interesting things to talk about. I think she would be a lot better in a different. Personally, I would give her like a 3.5/5.
Jennifer gave a ton of readings (200 pages in with 1-day b/w classes) and came up with the most confusing test questions possible. She was really hostile toward students' questions, and her lectures were clearly repetitive. I would not like to take another class with Jennifer, and if I had known this, I wouldn't have stayed in B&B.
Do not take IDST 190. She assigned a ton of reading in short time periods and the tests were extremely difficult. If you skip class, you won't pass, she made attendance difficult even if you were present in class.
Excessive reading! The reading quizzes she assigned were unnecessarily difficult and a lot of her content was not required to know for the exam nor was it connected to the themes of the class. I had trouble staying awake during class and being motivated to read 80 or some pages each night, in addition to assigned papers and study guides.
Jen is very knowledgeable about the subject matter, but I often found her inaccessible. Her lectures are packed with information, but lack the inspiration and narrative to engage my thinking. I also found her a bit intimidating as a first year, but don't worry--she's just a serious person. Lots of assigned readings, and expect pop quizzes on them.
I adore Gates-Foster! She is certainly a no-nonsense professor but she is very clear about her expectations. Readings and attendance aren't mandatory per se but the test content is straight out of her lectures. She answers questions with both clarity and incite. I definitely recommend this class and this professor!
If you're interested in Classics/Archeology, Professor Gates-Foster is absolutely the first professor I would recommend: she's very knowledgeable and an incredible lecturer. If you're looking for an easy gen-ed and nothing else, I would recommend you look elsewhere. Attendance wasn't taken, but test material is taken from lectures, not readings.
I will take any class that Professor Gates-Foster offers. She is an amazing lecturer and willing to answer any questions. A majority of your grade is comprised of the three exams - you have to study but they're not impossible. Attendance is not technically mandatory but you will not pass the class if you don't go to class.
Dr. Gates-Foster is one of the best professors I've taken a class with so far at UNC! Her lectures are excelllent, and super fascinatingl; this is a great class to learn about Ancient Egypt in-depth, but may not be a good choice for anyone looking for an easy gen ed credit. You HAVE to go to her lectures; otherwise, you definitely won't do well.
If you are taking this for a gen ed, don't. She is a great professor but unless you have a background in this content it is extremely difficult and the format of exams make it very challenging to do well. I am typically an A student and this class killed me even to get a C+. Very lecture heavy and tests weigh a lot.
Professor Gates-Foster in Borders and Boundaries was an interesting lecturer, but the class overall was poor. The constant shifting in topics was confusing, and TAs determine your entire grade. The professors were unprepared for such a large class. I would not recommend this class.
Fine as a lecturer but very condescending and rude to students. Will ask students questions and then belittle them for answering, even if they answer correctly. Often walks around the lecture hall to hawk students when she isn't lecturing. Generally seen as a pretty mean and disrespectful professor. However, she is knowledgable in her field.
Very organized and efficient compared to other triple-I instructors. Clearly very knowledgeable, slightly sassy, and expects a lot from you on a topic most students were not interested in unfortunately
Lengthy readings every night, but in all honestly they're not necessary to do well on exams. Didn't read any and did very well on the exam. Her lectures cover all the material you need to know, and everything on the exam is laid out very clearly and explicitly. She's understanding and lays out expectations well. Would highly recommend!
Prof. Foster was an amazing lecturer. The exam was difficult with no study guide and just a "read the slides" for advice, but overall it wasn't too hard. I wasn't too interested in the material, but Prof. Foster lectured in a way that didn't make it boring. There are readings every class, but reading them isn't necessary
not very approachable & passive aggressive. assigns lots of super long readings but you don't need them for the tests, just review the lecture stuff
Professor Gates-Foster cares a lot about her area of study. Her lectures were very entertaining even if you did not care too much about archaeology. She assigns a lot of readings but as long as you review what is on the slides and take notes during her lectures you should be okay. Would definitely take another class with her again.
I had her for B&B and out the three teachers, she was the best lecturer. However, her exam was the hardest. To do well in the class, you must attend lectures so you can get credit for the in class assignments and study for the exams - that's it. Study guides are helpful but TA's and teachers will not help you with your grade or even respond.
Borders & Boundaries is not that bad. The readings can be long, but there's not a ton of work and it's really not difficult. Jen was definitely my favorite of the three lecturers, although she also assigned the most reading. I actually really enjoyed her lectures. Archaeology wasn't something I expected to enjoy, but she made it interesting.
The test is completely based on slideshows AND information discussed in class. She is a good lecturer but not great outside of being your teacher. Information on the tests is pretty straight forward if you came to class and did the readings. Read the text for examples you can use on the test, not for understanding.
in my opinion, her lectures are the most interesting and easy to follow. The test is almost entirely based on lectures and ppt even though readings are assigned for every lecture.
worst IDST123 prof by far. She cares way too much about making her subject of interest seem like the most challenging/important subject in the class. She talks down to students and seems to think she is generally better than everyone else in the room.
Controlled, calm and engaging lectures are brilliant. Dr. Gates-Foster does an excellent job at making this material accessible to people outside the department, but there is a lot of reading involved so it's not easy. Tests are 95% from the lectures and she does not post notes, so you have to attend and pay attention. Easily one of my top 3 profs
Professor Gates-Foster is a passionate lecturer, though can come across as distant at times. The class is manageable with a focus on lecture slides and attendance. unstuckstudy proved helpful for preparing for exams.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Tests on the smallest details said in class even though she claims otherwise. Crap ton of reading. 2 exams and the first one is 15% even though historically students don't do well on it and she's aware of that. Weekly quizzes and weekly attendance. Barely lenient. Not your easy gen ed please skip out and save yourself
Dr. Gates-Foster is clearly very knowledgeable about Roman history and archaeology, and she seemed very nice. However, I found the lectures to be repetitive and somewhat monotonous. Grading was fair, and was half determined by her and half by a TA. Turn in the work and read at least some of the required readings and you'll be fine.
Could probably lecture about paint drying and make it at least somewhat interesting, she grades fairly although the TA might not be as fair (50% chance the TA grades your stuff I believe), and hope you get lucky with your group members for the project worth 20% of your grade.
class structure wasn't my favorite but project based which was nice. weekly check ins were often confusing and drew questions from more abstract concepts. simple enough but easy to fall out of A territory if you're looking for an easy gen ed.
