There was a lot of reading, but it wasn't typical boring textbook reading. She's a very fair and involved teacher. She encourages discussion, but still tries to keep on track with her lectures. I not only enjoyed her class, I went out of my way to sign up for Anthro120. I'll let you all know how it goes.
Her class was easy and entertaining. She does a good job moderating the discussion boards on BlackBoard. She was pretty easy and a very nice teacher when you apply yourself. Good class and very interesting. Some of the books weren't as interesting as they should be, but it was all a good learning experience.
Awesome teacher! She was obviously very interested in what she was teaching, and that made a big difference. I agree some of the books were a little boring or hard to get into, but over all this was a great class. I would DEFINITELY recommend her.
Enthusiastic, energetic and very interested in her subject. Promotes class room discussion. Encourages outside class work (voluntary social and human services) and offers extra credit for those. Easy going, stylish and fun loving. Very helpful and great methods of teaching. Incorporates technology and old school teching methods. Very interesting!
Fantastic class.
An awesome class! I'd recommend it to everybody!
Good lecturer, extremely generous grader, and enthusiastic about her subject.
Great Teacher. Great Class. I recommend it.
This was one of the most challenging classses I've had in a long time. She pushes you to be your best. Crystal clear assignments, very passionate about subject, the SLE was a great challenge. I highly recommend her. If you really want to learn take this class! She's always available to her students, even by phone. Love you GEM!
I took it online. A lot of reading but I never actually read everything. There were required discussion board posts that were pretty easy. Not hard material to understand. There was a SLE where we had to volunteer in the Community(7 Hours min) while meeting women of different backgrounds, and write essays about it. It was cool I guess.
I'm taking her class online right now and it's actually fairly easy. The exams are kind of hard because it's based off the reading from the book, the virtual lab cd, and tutorials so STUDY! You do have to volunteer but this class is very interesting!
Assigns an extremely high amount of weekly reading but otherwise simple class.
Lots of assignments, but it is so interesting and she is a generous grader. Lots of chances for extra credit. Have to do 8 hours of volunteer work. Such an interesting class you will not be bored. Don't worry about all the assignments, she is really understanding.
Great teacher. Very understanding. Will give you lots of extra credit ops if you need it. Easy class, lots of interesting assignments
The reading was very interesting, as were the required discussion boards (online class). There were many opportunities for extra credit. I liked that there was a required service project. The main downside was that she took a long time to grade assignments.
Gem is a great teacher. She inspires free thinking. There is a lot of reading for this class, but it is worth it if you want to learn and open your mind. If the opportunity arises, I will take another class with Gem.
Gem is exceptionally clear about her expectations, and she is very involved in the class, so you'll definitely get good direction and feedback. You're expected to work hard, but the material is engaging. I really enjoyed this class, and most of my classmates said the same.
LOVE this class. I wasn't really interested in this class before enrolling but having her as a teacher helps a bunch. She is so into the subject it's hard not to get excited too, and that's why I love the class. She is very helpful and passionate. Great teacher!
Class was much more interesting than I first anticipated. I really enjoyed this course, she made it fun and if you do the reading and turn in the work you will pass this class. She is easy to look at too.
Best teacher ever
Great class, great teacher! Great Experience! Take the class!
I'm taking her bioanthro class right now and I didn't any of the reading for the test and I got an A. The same thing went for her 100 level class I took last quarter and got a 4.0 in. This teacher is hot, and very good at teaching the material. If you takes notes in class and study her review sheets carefully you will get a good grade. Good luck.
LOVE LOVE LOVE HER! She's so nice, and her online class didn't require that much work. There's a 8 hour volunteer experience, and Zoo visit, but it's really not that hard. She's super helpful and will email back in no time. Exams are a challenge if you didn't read the text. Best teacher at EdCC!
gem is great! i took her anthro 100 and anthro 215 class and got a 4.0 for both classes. she is pretty nice but dont get caught with your cell phone! the test are right out of the lecture and i got a's on all of them. just go to lecture and take notes and do the projects with some interests and you'll do great. and go to class cause she is hot
She's an excellent instructor and her class is fun. You will learn a lot from her classes. She is very easy going but does expect students to put their best foot forward.
Super cool teacher, tells you every assignment within the first week. The projects are pretty easy if you just do the assignment. Highly recommended
No textbook to save students $$, but expects students to have extensive knowledge on subject from unorganized PowerPoints & random excerpt readings on wide variety of Bioanthropology topics. Although she is a fair grader.
Gem is amazing. I took this class because I needed the lab credits. I am almost finished my AA, and will say that this is the most interesting class I have taken at school. There is a lot of reading, but you will learn so much from her if you pay attention.
gem is seriously one of the best teachers i've had at edmonds. she is super chill and her class was fun. she made learning interesting and i liked how enthusiastic she was about her subject. was boring at first but as the quarter went on, it became better. 3 projects but all combined into one. seemed hard at first but it was easy. take her class!
I was extremely interested in the subject, and received a 3.8 GPA. Having said that, I found Gem Baldwin more interested in talking with the TA's during lab extremely frustrating. Also, her refusal to require a textbook for students does not equal less work or $$, it equals more time & research on the students part to find material that needs to be learned. Less PowerPoints, more textbook Gem
I recieved 3.8 in class, thanks to me, not Gem Baldwin. Yea, she is nice and enjoys suck ups & Anthropology but thats it! She enjoys socializing and talking with the (baseball team) and TA's more than teaching.During lab it was impossible to get her help. Apparently thats the TA's role. She teaches the content but if you want more detail or explanations forget it. And no textbook! She never encouraged group discussion, but she enjoys listening to herself speak.
She is a easy grader. However, there are tons of reading. Though there are review questions before exams, but she never gives model answer.
wow. favorite teacher ever. Not sure why people are saying she wasn't helpful? Maybe they were afraid to ask? I have had help from her and she wont stop until she is sure I understand. She keeps it interesting, is fun and personable and easy to ask questions. I wish she taught more classes because I would take them all. Highly recommended. <3
I've taken two of her classes and got a 4.0 in both even though they aren't too easy it's doable. She explains things very clearly, is nice to everyone, the lectures are engaging, and the assignments and reading is enjoyable since it's so interesting. Bioanthropology labs are fun too because you get to know everyone in the class. Great teacher!!:)
Lots of reading, but it's interesting. She is passionate and engaging. As long as you do the work, you will get a 3.5+. If you give her the chance, she will teach you more than you have ever learned in a single class. I know I did. She is an amazing professor and tries very hard for all students. All in all, highly recommended. Again, she is great.
She is probably the smartest person I have ever met. Fun to listen to. Take any class by her because she has a way of making everything interesting. Great Professor. She is also extremely pretty. (:
Before taking this class I wasn't interested or passionate about anything really. Gem opened up my eyes to anthropology. She not only is a very passionate teacher, but very helpful. If you are having difficulty grab her attention and she will help you try to understand. She goes above and beyond for her students and is a wonderful teacher. My fav!!
Gem is truly a gem! She is just the most amazing passionate teacher. Class would b over and she'd say "Just one more thing...!" and keep going. Her command of the material is beyond excellent and her lectures r inspiring.Plus - Anthropology is just cool! Wish I could take the class again I had so much fun. I highly recommend this class and teacher!
Gem is AMAZING. She cares so much about her students ability to succeed and will go through many lengths to teach material. I needed to see her about something unrelated to the course, and she made time for me in the next day. LOVE HER! Interesting class.
I went to her lecture in the Black Box in Winter 2012-13. Extremely engaging.I took both of her DIVST classes as soon as they were available;I was not disappointed! They were the most engaging and thought provoking [online] classes that I have ever taken. She gave me new perspectives that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. She's fantastic.
She was an incredibly passionate teacher who was eager to answer questions and connect with students. She gave a lot of review questions for exams but if you study they're not difficult. I recommend her highly, and the course material is extremely interesting! I loved Biological Anthropology!
The class was not difficult when I studied properly (I really really really recommend doing so), and she was very interesting to listen to because of her personal interest in the topic. I love having her as a teacher, for she is very willing to help students and connect to them as people. She is super awesome, and you should take her class!
Super easy class, but I did not like the teacher. I emailed her multiple time, both through regular email and canvas messages and she never got back to me. She doesn't really communicate with the class and even now I don't really understand what bioanthropology is. Super easy class, but if you have questions don't bother asking her.
Gem's not the type of professor you'll typically expect, but in genuinely good ways. Few are more passionate about the subject matter and you'll end up with a good amount of out of class work, including a zoo trip and a bit of community service. Labs can be disorienting, but pre-lab research online is key, more so than the textbook. Likes to talk.
Gem is extremely helpful. I took her class online (which was my first time taking a class online) and she was always there to answer all my questions. I would recommend taking her class!
Gem was sweet, fair & wanted everyone to do well. There wasn't much graded homework but keep up with your reading (textbook & lab) to stay on track! I didn't think I'd do well but passed with a 4.0. My advice is to make friends with your lab partners so you have people to study with! Make sure you do prelab readings, they are usually pretty helpful
We are half way through the quarter now, and I have to say that Gem deserves all the positive feedback she gets! I am the least bit interested in science and have always struggled in Biology, however I've learned more in 5 weeks of her class than I did in all of high school biology! Gem is always willing to help and I would 100% recommend the class
Gem is such a wonderful instructor. She is so passionate about the Anthropology and the Diversity field and wants all her students to do succeed. Highly recommended. Tip: Do pre-lab readings before lab day. It will save you from being confused during lab day.
While Gem can get off topic easily, it's definitely because she's so passionate about her area of expertise. Class was engaging and labs were helpful in learning the material. Be prepared for the community service hours and trip to the zoo for a lab report. Great teacher who cares about her students and their success!
Gem is really a good teacher and she really encourage the student to know each other better. Keep in mind that there are lots of reading in this class that will be use for weekly assignments. There are no test in this class. She is there to help you and answer your question if you have some difficulties. Overall it is a good class.
She is an amazing teacher. She loves her students and always give students chances to makeup for the tests or assignments. She cares about the students a lot. I did not take any biology classes or anthropology classes before but I absolutely love her class. I would recommend her to anyone!
Gem hates reading long papers so the closest you get to an essay is a short answer Q on a test. At the time Googling the "book title, author and ch 1 outline" would find you free helpful summaries, flash cards etc. There's a lot of overlap in her lectures and all tangents circle around to what we were talking about. Also her TA's are super helpful.
If you're not a science person, take her class! Gem is so nice and was able to open my eyes and knowledge up on bioanthropology. I have no knowledge in biology or anthropology before but I was able to get a 4.0. In the lab finals, you are allowed to use cheat sheets! However, do pre-lab readings before labs so you will know what to do during labs!!
Gem is awesome! I took her a few quarters back, but she still is one of my favorites here at EdCC. She explains the subject well and I could tell how passionate she was when she taught it. Her lectures are clear and she has a great personality! Her end of the quarter project was about sustainability and volunteerism so be ready for that.
This teacher is very easy, very nice, but if you're going into the class actually expecting to learn about the material, you'll be sourly disappointed. Same goes for her Anthropology classes.
Gem is a wonderful person. She is passionate in her area of study, and she wants the students to enjoy the class. There are weekly readings that sometimes relate to class, and weekly quizzes after lab, which can be a little tricky. Her lectures are not really structured and are all over the place, but it's easy to get use to.
I can definitely say that Gem is the best teacher I've ever met in EDCC. She is funny and witty, makes all her lectures interesting with discussions. She really cares about her students and respects all opinions. She also gives extra credits and an amazing person to talk to. Just come to class and you'll pass. Take her class! you won't regret it!
This class changed the way I see the world.
I'd say she's the worst ever but she'd actually have to be there to know. I can't even be sure she was there at all. Emails never got answered and I don't think she was aware of what she was assigning half the time. It wasn't until the end of the term that she even grades anything. Too bad she's taking a job away from someone who can teach.
Gem was barely accessible during the duration of this class. She would update modules late, sometimes halfway through the week that they were due. Our final project was never posted until the day that it was due only causing major stress to everyone in the class. If you are looking for a response from her via email, good luck!
She doesn't give you any grades until after the quarter is over. So you have no idea if your working in the direction she wants. If she cant stay on top of grades she should not be allowed to give out low scoring grades.
2 weeks after the quarter and grades are still not finalized! This paper was due 2 months ago!
I've taken two of Gem's courses (both online) and both are EZPZ! She uses Roxane Gay's "Bad Feminist" which doesn't feel like textbook reading at all. She assigns weekly discussion boards which I feel can be written without reading any of the assigned readings. She does require Service Learning but that's easy as well. No exam, just a final project
I am one week until the class is actually over and have not gotten a response on ONE of our assignments and we have weekly ones. There is no way to see if she likes the ways you are answering discussions because of her lack of feedback(nonexistant). I have taken many online courses and this is by far the worst.
She hasn't updated my grades from the beginning of the quarter. The quarter has ended and I have no idea about all of my grades. Never replied to my message either.
She is the worst teacher I ever had. No help whatsoever. Do not take her class unless you want to have nothing but pain and depression. She bearly responds to emails and never grades on time leaving you helpless to wonder what grade you got. Do not take her class
Gem is my favorite instructor EVER! She's amazing, really cares about women issues and she WILL inspire you! Gem's a bit all over the place and sometimes seems to forget to respond to an email, but she does care about her students and if you don't get a response, just go talk to her in person! She really wants you to do well in her class!
She is a great teacher to have if you tend to be a lazy person like myself. there was hardly any homework assigned in this class besides the readings and small book reports (which were really easy)... in all honesty I didn't read a single book she assigned to us and I aced every single quiz. a downside to her is that she turns grades in late :/
Gem, while a wonderful person to talk to, is not very good at grading papers on time nor communicating all criteria. She claims to be of help outside class, but is terribly hard to reach. Isn't very good at checking emails, and lectures are ALL OVER THE PLACE. Passionate of her subject, just not very organized and timely.
Over halfway through the course she only graded 3 assignments, though I submitted more than 2x that many, and I got a low grade. No biggie! I messaged her (OL class) to ask her to look at other work so I could have feedback and correct. No response. Again a week later, nothing. End of qtr, grades due tomorrow and no more graded work in Canvas still
She is the perfect example of someone who is knowledgeable in her subject, yet is a bad teacher. She comes late most of the time. Is a late grader. She gets distracted in tangents during her lectures. You would do better learning on your own in a hybrid class. Also it's unfortunate that she instructs most of the ANTHRO classes.
I was really excited to take this class but unfortunately shes so unorganized and is late to class most days that this class hasnt been much help. The class barely knows when there are assignments due and she doesnt really explain assignments well. Shes such a nice person and shes so passionate about her job but its just not the best quarter.
Gem has never been to class on time, she is almost always 20+ minutes late, and on multiple occasions decided not to come without telling us. She doesn't respect our time. There's one class period left and she has only graded one assignment this quarter. I don't feel that I've learned, when she is here she does not teach the material on her slides.
Gem is a very nice woman, but extremely unorganized and has no time management skills. This entire quarter she has not been on time once, and has even missed class a few times without notice. Canvas is a mess too, with assignments being very hard to find. She says to text her so she can reply quicker, but even then it takes her hours to respond.
Perhaps by neglecting Canvas messages, arriving 20 minutes late to her lectures, or not showing up at all, Baldwin wants to prove her theory that anyone can learn Anthropology on their own.
I was so excited for this class but it turned out to be very disappointing. She was very disorganized and it was hard for the entire class to figure out what was going on. She often showed up 20+ minutes late or not at all without warning. I started making other class work a higher priority over hers because those teachers bothered to show up.
You learn a lot of information, but it was too much work And I wish it was better organized for an online course. If you do the work and get decent grade in the tests (70/100) and get 100% on all the other assignments, you will definitely pass. Just be aware of how much work this class is and the 10 hours of service learning you have to do.
The worst instructor that I have ever had! It's almost the end of the quarter, she has not graded any of the assignments yet! You want feedback on assignments? Well, you will not get any in her class. Avoid this instructor.
Gems in person classes are better than online, I think. I took a different course from her two years ago that was really interesting- one of my favorite classes, actually. This online class was ok, and she is a fair grader and a decent teacher, but it was not as good as the other class. Both classes had in-person service projects, which I enjoy.
Best class ever!!! Gem taught me to love science, thank you Gem!
Gem is truly a phenomenal instructor. I was fortunate enough to take her Bioanthropology course. Her perspective is inspirational, thought provoking, and extra ordinary. She is passionate about her work and deeply cares about the success of her students.
I took three of Gems courses: ANTH 207 (Linguistic Anthropology), ANTH 215 (Bioanthropology), and Womens Studies 200. Gem was the best professor at Edmonds College and I was sorry to hear that she is not teaching there anymore. Not only were her classes phenomenal, Gem ran the Tunnel of Intersections and The Service Learning Center. The best ever
I took two of Gems courses and worked on her Tunnel of Intersections project. I never knew it was possible for a group of 20 something college students to be so engaged and excited about school. Gem brings her subjects and her students to life- she really cares, and she makes her students care in turn. I did my best work ever in her classes.
I learned more than I thought I could learn in a college class about important, real-world issues. It was a class about real life, and we even got to work on solving the problems we learned about in a service project! Plus, I never knew I would learn Karate in a Womens Studues course! The self-defense training was my favorite!
