New to teaching, her lectures are too fast and she knows too much to answer simple questions clearly. It's not her fault that the chem 121 text book is in a wacky order and does not progress logically, but she could do a better job of connecting the subjects. Very difficult class for those who took high school chem over a year ago.
Jennifer is an amazing professor! Her lectures are clear and easy to understand. When she suggests do problems from the textbook that means do problems from the textbook. If you can do the ones at the end of each chapter, they're very similar to the ones she uses in tests. Fair grader, go to office hours and she can help you out with any questions!
Chem 121 - Generally quite clear and emphasizes what is the important imformation, leaves plenty of time to take questions. Talks with a steady pace and projects voice well. - Look at the lectures on canvas the night before! - Extremely lenient with giving partial credit on tests - Sometimes mis speaks important facts or has typos on slides
Mrs. Griffith was an amazing instructor and I would completely recommend her to anyone wanting to take chem 121. She is very clear in her lectures and is always welcome to questions and comments. Compared to other teachers, her homework load is much smaller and her tests are much shorter, but you still learn the same amount as other classes.
Wow... where do I even begin. Dr. Griffith is incredible. Took someone who has historically barely survived sciences such as these, and made me look forward to the class. She goes above and beyond to make sure every student gets the help they need (ie has stayed past office hours to help me a several times). Best instructor by leaps and bounds!
New Teacher, her lectures are pretty simple, but she made them more difficult by often using terminology that was over our heads or making several very basic mistakes. She's willing to offer lots of help, I no problem passing, but I just found myself paying little attention to the lectures and getting help elsewhere.
I was a bit nervous about taking her class since she is quite new to teaching. However I was amazed by how well she lectures and prepares her students. She truly wants her students to succeed. Occasional extra credit on quizzestests. Read every chapter, do chapter problems, never skip class, go to office hours & you will do well. Very fair exams.
She was probably the best science professor I've had. You can tell she really cares about student comprehension. Her lectures make it easy to understand the material. She is amazing at answering questions and offering alternative explications. Her tests are not easy but if you keep up with the book problems you'll do okay.
She is very nice and likes to answer any questions students have but sometimes answers them in weird ways. If you show up, pay attention and try on all of the work then anyone can do it! She offers many ways to get help and keeps the students updated daily by writing the weekly to do on the board. Great teacher even for me who has never taken Chem
Loved her as a teacher. She had clear lectures and explained topics well. I learned a lot.
She was built by scientists to be the perfect o'chem professor. I also believe she is incapable of making a concept confusing. Great division of lecture time to practice problem time. Very fair testing and grading. Has a great classroom presence: funny, laid back while still being very professional. Has an concise answer to all of your questions.
Griffith is a fantastic professor! Her clarity is amazing and her lectures are impeccable. I tooK IB chemistry, so it was review. However if you read the text before class, you will do great and she is very well put together. She is enthusiastic and class is not dull. Her averages are in the high 70s, other 121 pro's are 60s! TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!
JEN IS GREAT. its a pretty hard class in general but she is super helpful and nice in office hours. Went in dreading O-chem but she actually made it really enjoyable.
Jen is an awesome professor. She explains the concepts really well and she teaches you techniques that can help you out on the homework problems. She is willing to help students out when they are confused. If you are going to take any chemistry course. Take it with Jen!! :)
Jen is a great professor and very knowledge in chemistry! I never was good at chemistry in high school but once I took it with her everything clicked! I did well because of the way she teaches the class! She teaches chem like your a 5 year old, there way she explains things is amazing! I recommend her if you are planning on taking 121! Solid class.
Jenn is the Mary Poppins of OCHEM! She gives incredible lectures, has accessible office hours, and wants you to succeed. She is approachable and is good at breaking down really abstract concepts! She knows her students are stressed and have other things going on too, so she keeps it real, but definitely expects you to know the material. Love her!
Jen is the best! I got a true understanding of many chemistry concepts in this class. She somehow explains at a perfect pace and knows when people don't understand. She puts things into simple terms and her tests are easy if you know your stuff and can do it quick. I didn't read the textbook much but used it for practice problems which really helps
Chem 121 is a really difficult class. Lecture, lab, and sapling online modules made for a lot of work. I felt that Jen was a good professor, but did not go in depth enough with her explanations of concepts at times. Questions on exams were harder than those in class.
She's a great professor. She has reasonable expectations, is a fair grader, and is helpful. However, her classes weight tests heavily so it's tough to get a good grade if you don't nail the tests.
Took Jen for organic chem 1 and 2, and she was excellent in both. One of the best chemistry professors at Western. Extremely fair in her grading, but don't expect an easy class. The only professor I've ever had that will have quiz grades in on the same day you took it.
Best professor I've had!! Very skilled at teaching organic to college kids. Makes it understandable and has clear expectations!
Professor that hates sapling as much as we do. Love Griffith, 10/10. Her grading is logical. Most personable professor of chemistry at wwu. take if can. Suprisingly patient when people talk during class. if you take her, shut up when she's talking.
Great professor! Really nice too. Nothing too surprising on the exams if you go to class and look at the study guides. She also holds review sessions during class time before exams.
Jen was an okay professor, she explained most concepts good, but others not so good. If you're taking this for a GUR, I recommend taking a different professor. She begins to teach Organic Chem in this class. Exams are EXTREMELY LONG for 50 minutes, if you take a lot of time during testing, beware.
Amazing professor. Chem is hard to teach and she does it very well! She is very approachable and happily answers any questions you have. Also helps that she hate sapling as much as other students. The textbook isn't necessary but is very useful for studying for her 2 midterms and one final! If you show up and ask questions you'll do fine
Jen was the absolute best. O-chem is a pretty tough topic but I took her for 351,352 and 354 and it was an absolute blast. She is super friendly and down to earth and honestly was my favorite professor at WWU. I didnt really enjoy the whole O-chem side of things that much but she made it all totally worth it
I loved Jen. This class was one of the hardest I've taken, but she is really personable and caring. The exams were very difficult, but I liked the style of them (fill in the blank, short answer, etc.). She is aware of student comprehension, and somewhat tailors material toward that. I would definitely recommend taking o'chem with Jen.
Jen was amazing. I had her for lab and the last Ochem course. She's very laid back in lab. Her lectures are easy to comprehend & her exams reflect what was taught in lecture. Format of her exams are mostly short answer and fill in the blanks. Overall, I wish I had taken her when I first started Ochem.
I have taken Griffith for all my Ochem classes. While it took a bit to warm up to her, she is extremely thorough, prepared, and hard-working. She is very helpful during and outside of class. She explains things succintly and always checks in to see if we have questions after she teaches new material.
I hated O Chem lab with all my heart. SO much work for a 3 credit class. However, Griffith made labs relaxing for the most part. Played music and didn't care if you used your phone in class. She did lectures before lab that explained what we were going to be doing for the lab that day. Beware of losing lab technique points.
Only had her for Chem 354 lecture but I'd take a class with her again.
Jen is probably one of the best professors I've had! She's very clear in her lectures and willing to answer any questions in lab. Her lab sessions are relaxed and educational, and I felt like I really learned rather than just doing what the lab manual told me to. Exams directly reflected the labs and reading. Would definitely take her again!
Griffith is an incredible prof. She is really knowledgable and makes the information extremely understandable. That being said, O Chem is HARD. You will definitely have to work to get a solid grade in this class. The grading was based off only of the lab and 5 tests.
Shes so awesome, really clear in her lectures, makes the class really easy to understand and accessible. She does lots of problems on the board so the concepts are super easy to grasp if you pay attention. Its suggested to read but honestly she presents everything in the textbook better than it could, maybe skim it ahead of time.
Jen is a great prof. That being said, Ochem is hard! However, she tries her best to make it accessible to her students, using many examples and slowing down when she sees confused faces. Her tests are difficult but fair. I would definitely take her again.
Jen is great. She is a clear lecturer, humorous, and listens to students and their concerns. After attempting to use a new version of online hw (smartworks) and hearing students' issues with it, she decided to accept hw from the book instead. Adaptable and always available to help. Keep up with the book problems and good luck with the ACS!
I wish every professor was like Jen. I've taken her for the whole ochem series. She has clear expectations and provides you with what you need to succeed. The class is NOT easy, but if you attend her lectures and write down all the examples she gives you will be a lot better off.
Jennifer is awesome! She is hilarious and cares a lot about how students are doing in the class. Lectures were interesting and very understandable. You can do really well if you put in the work with listening to lectures and reading the text. Homework was participation based in our class which helped immensely. Would definitely recommend.
Chem 352 is a very VERY tough class, in my opinion. Taking this professor is not making things any easier. Not only does she make no effort to make a hard class easier, but she will lie to her students about what she is testing on. Exams are brutal (<50% avg on one), and you never know what you'll actually be tested on. Do not recommend.
Jen is a really great professor. Her lectures make the information really obtainable, and she has a helpful, good attitude about everything. However, her exams are difficult. There are few questions so the point distribution is really high, and so while I felt like I knew o chem best this quarter, I could never get above an 86% on her exams.
Ochem is a hard class but Griffith makes it a little bit easier to understand. She answers questions very well and wants her students to succeed. Does lots of examples class and lists which problems in the textbook apply to each test.
Jennifer is an absolutely amazing professor. She puts a lot of effort into the course organization and it really shows. She genuinely makes it easier for students to succeed by having take home quizzes and offering unlimited attempts for homework problems without it affecting your grade. She is beyond kind and encouraging in her office hours. 11/10
Jen is a great teacher, shes funny kind and VERY organized which is really helpful. Her tests are a bit on the harder side, especially with the amount of information shes testing you on ( a lot of questions an hour to do them) but totally doable. Shes a great choice for Ochem.
Jen Griffith is an all around amazing professor, honesty she is the best professor I have ever had! Her lectures are great, they are clear and really help me learn. Her learning target system makes it crystal clear what we are learning and it makes it easy to find where I need to study more. She sets her students up for success.
I've had Jen for all 3 Ochem classes and she was amazing. Her class is hard but you learn so much. Shes incredibly organized, fair, and kind. If you can, i'd take her class.
I had Jen for CHEM351 and CHEM251. I think she is the only reason I passed 351. She is clear, patient, and easy to follow in her lectures. She answers questions very well and is willing to give individual help during class when everyone is working on a problem. Grades mostly come from tests but her tests are fair and easier than the homework.
Jen is an excellent professor and the way she has adapted her class to COVID-19 remote learning is the best of any professor I've had so far. She is fair, concise, and clear in her expectations. If you work a job, study groups are posted as videos, and lectures are asynchronous. She is always willing to help and respects her students as individuals
I was expecting the worst from Ochem and honestly I didn't get it. Griffith is nice and expectations are clear. Had recorded lectures and held study groups for us over Zoom. If you do the reading/lecture and optional assignments that go with, you should do fine in this class.
Jennifer is awesome! Her lectures were great. We had 4 quizzes and 2 exams. Quizzes were open note and we could work in groups and exchange answers with everyone, so those were an easy A. Exams were taken individually on Canvas and were mostly fair, with some curveballs. No required homework. Do her problem sets, ignore the problems in the book.
Jennifer is the best chem professor I have ever had. She is so approachable and very understanding. She makes lectures that are complex seem super simple! I wish every prof taught like her! Take her class if you want to not hate your life.
Organic chemistry isnt easy, but Jen makes it much more palatable. She is incredible and should be tenured, honestly. She is one of the reasons I fell in love with chemistry. She is kind, inspiring, respectable, and she is so funny. If you have the chance to take a class with her, you absolutely should. and ask for help if you need it!
Dr. Griffith is a fantastic professor. I took 351 and 352 with her, and while OChem is hard, her lectures are clear and concise and she's very helpful and fair in, and out of, class. I would highly recommend organic chemistry with her. You get out what you put in to this class- if you work all the textbook problems, an A is well within reach.
Ochem is not easy, but she made it approachable and walked us through so many problems. Do all of the practice problems and come to office hours and you'll do great with her!
Taken online during COVID. Jen was amazing. Her expectations were clear. The exams were fair, and she was really helpful during her office hours/study group time. There were 4 exams which seemed like a lot, but there was less material on each and they were non-cumulative. I wish I could have had her for all three ochem classes.
if you need to take ochem, take it with jennifer! she clearly explained all the topics and was available twice a week for an optional study group which was so helpful come exam time. there were 4 tests but all questions were pulled directly from practice problems. she made this class enjoyable because i was actually able to understand the content
She's awesome. 351 is a condensed class of the year-long elementary ochem series - she broke down the material very well. She's accessible, kind, and straightforward. She doesn't waste time so if you miss the lectures, good luck. I didn't use the textbook at all; her study set problems are exactly like the quizzes and the exams. she's a safe bet.
Jennifer was one of the best chemistry teachers I've ever had. She explains concepts and answers questions really well. For the exams you get a whole sheet of notes to use. If you get the chance to take her do it! I haven't taken any other chemistry classes from her but I'm sure she is just as good!
Jen goes out of her way to have extra study groups and practice sets of problems to make sure students understand the material. She also has amazing lectures that makes Ochem much more approachable than I had expected. Shes very knowledgeable and kind. There are 3 exams and 3 quizzes you can use a full note sheet on. Highly recommend taking Jen!
Jen was a joy to have as a professor and a very good lecturer. First instructor that made chemistry make sense to me. She ran an optional "study group" outside of class where she went over a set of problems every week which was just excellent. The optional textbook questions/problem sets were very helpful and would show up on tests and quizzes.
Jen is probably my favorite professor at Western to date. I was very nervous about Ochem but she made it my favorite class this quarter. Her lectures are chalk full of examples from the last lecture, which is really nice for helping to recall material. She is very clear with how she wants you to draw mechanisms and grades VERY fairly.
Dr. Griffith is the best ochem prof you could ever ask for. She has learning targets and is very clear in what you need to know. Her exams comes from the learning targets, so you can expect, so if you understand everything, you should do fine. She grades fairly. Your grade is solely dependent on your test grades. Her problem sets were also helpful.
Dr. Griffith is hands down the best chemistry professor I've ever taken. I took her for the OChem Lab and she made that lab so much fun and enjoyable. She was very helpful during lab time and outside of lab for any questions. She played music during lab and would interact with all the students like we're friends and not just her students.
Jennifer is hands down, just amazing. OChem is not easy but she made it so much more accessible! Her organization made expectations clear and studying was very straightforward. She cleared up lingering confusion from 351 for me. Her content connects over the whole course so you're prepping for the final from day 1. Fair exams and grading.
Dr. Griffith is awesome! This class was a lot of work, but Jen's labs were never too stressful. Just all around a vibe.
If you can get Jennifer Griffith for any Ochem class, definitely do. Chemistry has never been easier for me, and I have taken SO many chemistry classes. She explains everything so clearly that I understand almost everything the first time she said it. Lectures aren't boring and they don't drag on for what seems like hours. 10/10
It's OChem, so you have to put in some work for your grade but Griffith is by FAR the best professor I've ever had. Her teaching style never left me confused, I loved the many examples she gave us. She explains things so clearly, and if she can tell that you're putting the work into at least trying then she will definitely help you out! Recommend!!
Great professor, her final definitely felt a bit out of left field but I'd highly recommend taking her. Ochem is a difficult class but you can't go wrong with Griffith, she's super nice in office hours and she makes the 50 minute lecture go by quickly. Not too much homework, most of your grade is determined by exams. Final wasn't cumulative.
Dr. Griffith has the best teaching style I've encountered yet. Her exams are tough but great learning experiences. Lectures and pace are perfect in my experience. She's also a funny, compassionate, relatable person. She's a fast grader and can have exams back within a few days. Very respected and passionate.
Great person, not the best at teaching this class. It was her first time teaching the class so her lectures were confusing and not organized and she still graded her tests harshly. Expected you remembered everything from gen chem and then would make things overly complicated. Good person though, fun to talk to, makes a good class atmosphere.
Enrollment hopes dashed as study guides and exams didn't align, leaving students unprepared. Jennifer's fast lectures impeded note-taking. No-phone policy unevenly enforced; laptop gamers faced no consequences, fueling a sense of unfairness. Tolerance for non-academic laptop use while strictly penalizing phones created student inequality vry bad :(
My grade was entirely my own fault due to missed lectures, but she is one the most amazing teachers I have ever taken herre at western. She cares so much about everyones success and it shows!
Professor Griffith is the best professor I've had thus far. If you're like me & struggle with lecture-style learning, Griffith will be perfect for you. Very practice & comprehension focused which really helps you prepare for exams. I've yet to have a professor who explains concepts as well as Griffith. If you have the chance to take her- do it!!!
Jen was great. She made ochem manageable and all materials needed were provided. Textbook available online for $40 connected to canvas.Jen was kind and understanding.
Difficult material, but she explained it well. Extremely organized, predictable schedule and workload, available outside of class. You've got to put the time in for this class and definitely do a ton of practice problems. She allowed notes sheets for 251 exams. Would absolutely recommend!
Amazing professor, very fair and straightforward with her grading. Make sure you do the practice problems in the textbook, and buy the solutions manual. First exam is the easiest, I got an A on the first one and then failed the second exam, so don't be fooled by the difficulty. She genuinely wants students to understand and do well.
Good professor, very kind and helpful. She is good at teaching and wants the best for her students. Class is mix of lecture and participation. You have to practice to succeed.
Sort of a no nonsense person, but very clear with her expectations. Knows her stuff but seems a little harsh when you don't fully understand something from the jump. Tough grader on tests, gave us corrections for one. Takes sporadic attendance once a week so you have to attend. Smartwork HW like normal with 5 attempts without penalty.
Jen is a wonderful professor who clearly cares about her students. She is very accessible during and outside of office hours. She is a little no-nonsense in class but very kind and willing to help however possible. There are lots of in-class practice problems which is nice. Overall she is a great choice if you're nervous about chemistry classes.
What a lovely professor. She learned everyone's name, is helpful during office hours, always answers questions, and provided some extra credit opportunities. Do not be late to lab, go to every class, and do the extra problems in the textbook and you'll get an A. Her pace is great and she lets you use all notes on the exam. Study guides provided.
Jennifer is hands down the best professor I've had. She genuinely wants all of her students to succeed and does an amazing job at making a tough subject tangible. I owe so much of what I've learned and the motivation to keep going from her. If you take OChem seriously and use her advice, you can get through the series. Also go to her office hours!
One of the worst organic chemistry teachers I've had. If you are trying to learn the material do not take this professor.
Jennifer is amazing! Ochem is definately a tough class but she makes it super easy to understand. Tests are weighted pretty heavily because there is no lab section. You will have 3 tests and 3 quizzes, but she prepares you super well with lots of study material.
Between her detailed lectures and the variety of practice problems she assigns, Dr. Griffith makes 351 a breeze. Highly recommend.
Jen can be super intimidating at times but she is genuinely so nice and helpful in lab. Such a cool professor, super chill and she let us do spotify jams during lab. Definitely do the pre labs on time and make sure you come to lab on time or else she can get pretty strict. Super helpful in office hours and very approachable!
I am horrible at o chem and was frightened of this class! The course is not graded heavily by exams and she gives lots of extra credit and made it very approachable. The exams are very similar to the homework and open note. The labs were actually pretty fun and only took 1-2 hours we were done early.
