Gives a lot of notes, interesting material, but boring presentation of material

Pretty boring... 50 minutes seems like forever. Hard tests. Straight up material

The best teacher I've had here! Very interesting!
This teacher is great...as long as you're a woman. Strong Feminist and Liberal.
easy class take notes she is hot
Vary good teacher. The best I've had at this university so far.

Great Teacher. Very fun and interesting. Class was a breeze. You do have to go to all classes b/c she sometimes suprises you with quizes. Test aren't easy but they are easier than most. I would definatly recommend her.
Excellent teacher, maybe the best.
Definitely need to take her.. you have to read and go to class but not a hard class... a lot of common sense stuff.... she is hot too
Intresting class. good teacher. funny at times and had a good guest speaker
Cool teacher. She's pretty enthusiastic regarding the topics and such. Just make sure to go to class, take notes, and study hard for the tests.
Awesome teacher! SHE'S HOT!
Awesome teacher. She makes you want to listen. Read the book. I wish she could teach all my classes becuase she cares and wants you to learn
Wonderful teacher! U must go to class but no sweat..class is fun and interesting. She is a great teacher...highly recommended!!!!

Nice woman, straightforward class.
Great lecturer! Funny and interesting! Class was never boring.
Very funny and knows her stuff!
gives out alot of notes, so you better go to class. also, alot of pop quizzes too. overall, she is very informative. however, her tests bothered me some because sometimes she asks random stuff out of the book. besides this, shes good!
She is a great teacher but gives out a lot of notes. You must go to class and study the notes and read the book. Not the easiest class but you learn a lot and with effort can make an A
This class .. you have to read a lot!! I learned a lot from this class, but way too much reading for a intro class. Easy A
Great teacher! Very clear and set expectations, she is helpful and really tries to help you understand. I would recommend her to anyone in the CJ dept. She wants you to learn and cares about teaching all while making class interesting.
This prof. made boring class seem fun. I worked hard, but learned a lot. Lots of work, but if you read textbook (not that great) and go to class, you can earn a A or B.
EXTREMELY helpful. She always replies to emails quickly, and can meet with you whenever. Class is still hard. She only gives recommendations to those who make an A in her class, and an A is quite rare. Go to class, go to lab! Two papers, one that takes the first half of the semester. I think I'll make a high B. She's funny too! I liked her class.
Basically the class is hard but she is helpful. You will write 2 tough papers and have in class quizzes. Must attend class and lab everyday. Alot of notes and yes, it gets very boring after a while.
such a wonderful professor, wish she was teaching more CJ classes.
I have had this professor for Race, Gender and Justice and Criminal Theory. She expects a lot out of her students. She is very helpful and she will definitely work with you. Great instruction methods. You have to work your butt off in these classes. Read the book and the handouts given!! Attendance is mandatory!!
She's hard, no doubt. But she'll help you whenever possible. She really cares about her students. If you need an easy research methods class, go with Prof Blevins. If you actually want to learn a great deal, take Hartman. Her office is always open and she'll always make time to speak with you. She replies to emails like lightning. Great professor!!
intense
great prof; hard, but cares whether you learn material or not. would def. take another class by her. keeps students entertained.
I took a Criminology class with her at Northeastern University. She is an amazing person and professor.
Learned lots, like her teaching style. Challenging tests. Didn't like presentation requirement, but glad I took the class. I have recommended to friends to take her Gender class.
Really not that great of a teacher, she probably knows her stuff but because she never shows up to class it doesnt really help. She has other teachers do the lectures and will have two tests in three weeks with only 1 lecture inbetween. A little rediculous and retarded but its alright. Nothing to jump outta your seat about
Dr. Hartman is a wonderful prof. I would rate her as the best I've had (nice, smart)... and I'm a Senior. Learned a lot, wish I could take more CJ classes with her, but I'm graduating.
Dr. Hartman really enjoys teaching. She is very fair. Her class is pretty easy if you come to class.
Dr. Harman is a wonderful professor and very professional in her approach. I am taking research methods right now and although a boring topic, she makes the class really interesting. She is also extremely helpful and helps out her students all the time. Very funny and unorthodox professor too, likes to play music to begin class.
For an intro level course, she is too challenging. I am striving for a C. I got an A in a senior thesis and i found this professor more difficult. I do not recommend her.
Overall, a very good teacher. Her first test is easy, but the next tests are challenging. She has a policy that if you think her test questions lacked clarity you can find proof to take it out of the test after getting test results. She is very helpful and funny, and her guests help solidify material. You will do well if you study.
Overall she is a good professor but her methods of teaching could use work. I have taken numberous classes with her. Dont take her class if you are not going to do the work.
Great teacher, means business. Not like most CJ teachers, no easy "A" just for showing up. Enjoys when students learn the material. Don't take her class if your'e a slacker.
YOU WILL WORK HARD TO EARN A GOOD GRADE(A OR B)! HONESTLY YOU WILL WORK HARD TO GET A C. If you want an easy A DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!I can assure you that she is a good professor and you will leave her class knowing how to apply what you learned outside the classroom. As for attendance you dont have to attend class but you would be foolish not to.
GREAT Professor! Very Helpful & Clear about class material. Expects you to do you work, if you don't you'll definitely fail the course. I Love taking her classes. Every CJUS major should take at least one of her classes before leaving UNCC. :)
Learned a lot, 1 of a few college classes I can say will influence how I think in the future.
Dr. Hartman is an excellent professor who genuinely cares about the success and well-being of her students. She's not great about communication as far as returning emails and making expectations clear, but otherwise is one of the best faculty members in the CJUS department!
Dr. Hartman is the most fair professor I've ever had. I learned a lot from her, and enjoyed the class overall. This is NOT a blow off class. I am going to get an A but it took a lot of work. All of my study guides I made for exams were over 10 pages. The information is not difficult but there is so much of it. Thankfully tests aren't cumulative.
Dr. Hartman is one of the best professors at UNCC when it comes to experience. She knows A LOT about what she teaches and UNCC in general. Attendance was NOT mandatory, but she has "unannounced writing assignments" that will make or break your grade if you miss them. If you study the material and read the assigned readings you will do fine.
Dr. Hartman is an awesome professor. She encourages discussion and gets the class to think about tough issues. Her class will leave you more open-minded and socially conscious.
Had Dr Hartman for gender, race and justice (oral comm. req) Class was challenging. She is incredibly intelligent and gets you to open your mind and view things in an entirely new perspective. Class was 3 5 min presentations on attending public events about gender/race. Midterm/final were each half MC, half essay. Outstanding professor, hard class.
Great professor. She brings in great speakers. There's really never a dull class session. Her power points are great but you MUST read the books as well.
Hartman has an attitude that makes students not respect her. She also goes on rants instead of teaching the test material. I'm not a resentful student because I'm doing well in the course thanks to myself but I regret having her as a professor. Definitely wouldn't recommend.
Good prof, not an easy A, so slackers stay away. Very helpful in class but also helpful about things not related to class. Would totally recommend her for another class and would tell people to go see her during offie hours. Am not a major and probably won't be but she left me with things to think about.
SHE IS AWESOME! The text assigned was a lot, but it was really interesting and so was she! She doesn't give extra credit, but she helps out on test a lot. She is so flexible with office hours and she will literally look over your notes to be sure you have everything you need for the test. Extremely helpful, but you will need to do some reading!
Jen Hartman is a good professor, but her class is no easy A. Take detailed notes on her lectures and do the assigned readings. Her class consists of 4 tests and 4 writing assignments. Tests are based off her lectures and the textbook. Writing assignments are given randomly and in class, so if you skip a lot you will most likely miss them.
Takes attendance EVERYDAY! Gives good lectures! 3 test, 4 writing assignments, and attendance is your grade. Must read books for class. Overall, I learned a lot from her and she inspired me through every lecture. Always makes class enjoyable. Tough class but well worth your time!
Enjoyed the class
Just do your reading and pay attention in class.
Great professor! She teaches from a power point which intertwines with the textbook. There are pop quizzes so attend class. I studied the vocabulary and the summaries at the end of each chapter and I passed the class with an A. This class can be easily passed if you put for the effort.
After reading the reviews before I took the class I was a little skeptical, but I absolutely loved it. Dr. Hartman is an amazing professor and I plan on taking her again in future classes. She is strict, but definitely worth taking her class.
read the book. read the power point. you will be fine. she is a great instructor.
It's a big class which sux but I came to class because of her lectures. Learned a lot, this class made me want to be a CJ major. Tests are long but if you stay on top of notes you will be fine.
I thought Professor Hartman was cool. I had her online intro to CJ class during the summer. There wasn't many assignments, maybe 4 plus 3 tests. The tests covered a lot of material but the class was really easy. I'm guessing since it was condensed into 5 weeks. Just read a lot. In all I liked her as a professor as she was pretty chill.
Hartman was good, wouldn't call her chill. Learned a lot but hate online classes.
Our grades were always incorrect and caused a lot of confusion. Writing Assignments are difficult because her TAs grades them, and they have different grading scales, so you could get a grade that you dont deserve. I would avoid taking her online class and take it in person with someone different.
I took this class as an elective. Professor Hartman is very unclear about when quizzes and tests are due. She will say something starts on one date at a specific time when in fact it closes at that time. More than half of my online class has missed tests and quizzes. Also, quiz questions are wrong and she constantly has to go back and change them.
I took her class online. This was absolutely the most unorganized course I have ever taken. The dates on the syllabus are the dates the test is due not taken. More than half the class missed the exams/quiz's because the syllabus isn't clear. I do not recommend this class to anyone.
She is a nice lady, but her management of an online course is awful. Miscommunications about test and quiz dates. No make-ups were allowed on anything for any reason. TA's grade things, so there is unequal distribution of grades. Quizzes have the incorrect correct answers. Poorly designed for an online class. Do not take it for an elective.
This is an internship class, 1 project that is based on data collected from your internship. Not hard at all.
I took this class as a non-business elective. Loved the material and the book made it easy to learn. MC quizzes and exams, a few DB posts here and there. She knows what she's talking about and doesn't try to make it any more difficult than it needs to be.
took foundations as an online class. not a major (still not sure if i will be), so didn't know a lot of stuff. lots of material. liked the online structure for the most part. hartman is always available and very helpful which made the class good for me.
Class was a lot, like enormous (4 books) of reading. But it was still a grate class. I honestly believe of all college classes this one will be the one to stay with me the most. Learned about racism, sexism, lots of great discussion. Prof Hartman was open to discussing difficult subjects.
Took her for Learning Community for Criminal Justice. Super helpful and made my experience here a lot better. Super relatable and helpful.
Your grades are from tests, quizzes, and short essays. The essays are simple and she isn't a harsh grader. You need to read the textbook and review slides to do well on tests/quizzes. She drops your lowest essay and quiz grade. She has difficult staying on topic in lecture but is very interesting you will have to spend time outside of class.
Took Hartman for Intro to CJ class. Not bad but a lot of work. Learned stuff but also made us do notecards. Was willing to do extra study sessions and kahoot bc class asked.
Dr. Hartman is personable and a great leader. She definitely wants to see her students succeed beyond graduation.
Had prof Hartman for internship. Class is not required, for the most part you go to your internship placement and then once every few weeks you meet in class to see how it's going. Project at the end was based on stuff I did in my placement. Really cool, hands on class.
Dr. Hartman knows her material but the structure of the course is in complete disarray. only two exams with so much information crammed into each, she doesnt stay on top of grading assignments so you will more than likely have to email her regarding your grades. The TAs are very helpful and probably the reason why I passed the class.
2 exams (respondus w/ webcam), 2 presentations, 5 writing assignments. Most disorganized & chaotic class I've ever had. Prof & TA's never on the same page. required to read 3 books, weekly articles, videos/documentaries, doesn't share presentation. Anything discussed or given is free game for exams. specific questions on exams. just avoid her
I took this class over the summer so it was asynchronous; however, we only had 12 assignments and they all weighed heavily on your grade. The tests and quizzes required lockdown+webcam and you weren't allowed to use notes. Normally this would be fine, but we would have to memorize 150+ powerpoints slides and at least 100 pages of the textbook.
Very very hard to get a good grade. You have to study so so much and test/quiz questions are very very specific details (66% of grade) does not allow you to see what questions you got wrong Unless you set up a call and go over them with her. Expects you to show up to her extra hours to get better info on things. Difficult to communicate with.
Took her Intro class during a summer session. Not best decision for me because so much things to remember. Prof was helpful i liked she hosted office hours so i could ask questions, i didn't go to all office hours. Not a easy class but will learn something which is why we are in school.
Intro in online class during summer 2 session. Didn't know any of the material but like cop shows so thought it could be a cool class. I wish class had more time to talk about indivdual case studies. Still considering my options to be a major or not. Dr Hartman rasied my interest in the subject.
I took her as an online elective. Hartman was one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Shes unorganized, reads directly off her slides and doesnt explain clearly in her lectures. She gives tons of work to memorize in little time, her TA was more helpful than she was. Please avoid this lady at all cost. Very very very tough grader! Do not take
Hartman uses lockdown browser on tests and we have to memorize a chapter that is 60 power-points long and read the whole chapter in the book. Will have you do a 360 check before you take the test and invade your privacy just so she can be satisfied that youre not cheating. If youre so worried about someone cheating then why is your class online
Worst prof I have ever had. She took a 1100 class and made it more difficult than any upper level class I have taken. How? She gives quizzes on entire chapters that are 50+ pages with 50+ PP slides. She then picks a handful of random, niche quiz questions that make no sense. Same thing goes for the exams. Don't take her unless you like frustration
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR! So extra for no reason. Makes a 1100 level class more like a graduate level class. So rude too. Lockdown browser and SO MUCH reading.
Professor Hartman really made me work for my C-. I really studied for the tests and I do not believe I ever made higher than a C, if I was lucky. A lot of work for an elective course. I will give credit where it's due though, she is a nice professor and will work with you as long as you are making an effort in her course.
don't take this class as an easy A. lots more to topic than tv shows but i did learn a fair amount. she is always willing to help, but you can't be a slcacker.
Didn't imagine an intro class to be so much reading. I am glad this is my major. Prof did tell us there would be reading. Not a huge fan of online class, she did an ok job keeping me entertained. She surely takes her job serious and is willing to assist.
internship will be the only class i look back on my college as being helpful. Prof Hartman helped me get placement and i think i will get a full time job out of the placement. she worked hard for me, i really can't say enough good things.
Hartman helped me find a internship that will eventually get me a job in law enforcement. I can' t thank her she work so hard for me. Every criminal justice student should tkae this class.
Took online course over summer, it was great. Book not used at all. She makes lecture videos watch them at double the speedd. If youre interested in the CJ system you wll be good. Videos are on interesting subjects. Shes helpful if you need her.
She cares about students and makes effort to engage with them. IMO gives a lot of busy work and there were a lot of material for the exams. Not a bad professor or class overall, Hartman makes taped lecture interesting and interactive. If you're there to learn and pay attention, you will be fine and will learn.
Does not let you see what questions you got wrong on the quizzes or exams and gives no study guide so you are basically screwed. The questions she asks are very specific but not important enough for you to remember sometimes. It felt like she did it on purpose. Do not take in summer!
I'll start this review by telling you not to take this professor over the summer. She's a very tough grader and will knock off points for small mistakes. Tests are worth the most points and she does nothing to help you prepare. I took this class as an elective and I recommend anyone else in my position to look somewhere else.
Dr. H is one of the best professors I've had at uncc. Recorded lectures are engaging & not boring like others. She is willing to help, cares about her students. You can tell she is very passionate about her work. Take her, you will not regret it but don't think it will be like TV shows. I am definitely going to take her again, i learned alot.
My favorite prof at uncc. She knows her stuff & checks in to makes sure that the class is getting the material. The tests make up a large portion of your grade, but also have written assignments and quizzes in case tests aren't your thing. It was in summer so things went fast but not that fast if you did your work you can stay on top of things.
Prof Hartman is very engaging and knowledgeable on the information in the Foundations course. Great class tho grade is based on the 4 tests/quizzes, so you need to keep up with the work. I met with Prof Hartman via zoom a couple of times. She was super helpful in the class, and with career paths in CJS too. I will take another class from her.
without a doubt THE best prof at charlotte. the gender, race& justice class was so eye opening. the other people in the class were also amazing. The prof created a class for all to ask questions. I can't tell you how much this class has really impacted how I think about the world now. there are a lot of books, but they were all pretty solid reads.
Prof Hartmanis engaging and knowledgeable on the topic, Gender, Race & Justie. Great teacher, class should be required for all CJ majors. All of the books where pretty amazing. Best part was being encouraged to ask questions about race, gender issues that I would never bring up in another class. Class changed by mind on a lot of things. Take it!
Took as summer class because I need class for my major. Don't like onine classes, but she made it ok. I guess. Prob would have given more stars if we were in person. Online did let me keep my job, so I did like this option. A few tests, but you drop worse one. Some writings but have had worse graders. I do like she gives written feedback.
Accessible outside of class and has been supportive
Its lots of material to cover. Online so recorded lectures and lots of powerpoints. Four exams, lots of quizzes and writing stuff. Grading was fine. Best part is prof hartman made herself available to answer questions. Not an easy grade but i did learn some stuff.
It took a bit for me to engage with Professor Hartman, but once I did I like her style. She is a good teacher who is VERY passionate about equal justice for all, especially marginalized communities. Goes over American histroy of how we got to today in the US. Also learned about masculinity and patriarchy. Online course w lots of content but was ok.
Prof Hartman is engaging and knowledgeable. While the class has a lot of work, she provides helpful feedback. I found Unstuck AI and the free textbook to be great study aids alongside the lectures. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
I'm sure Hartman is great, but she should NOT be holding online classes. All semester, it seemed she had no idea how to operate Canvas without constant typos, miscommunications, and unclear instructions. It is VERY reading-heavy, and there are several written assignments; I've been told she doesn't require this of in-person sections, though
The best professor in the CJUS Major. Incredibly helpful to all students. Class was organizes really easy to understand but still was challenging. I liked I could discuss things in more depth than other classes. I can recommend to go to the lectures there is participation grade and make note cards for exams. You will learn life long stuff.
